1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS 1.1 Point/Line/Plane

1.2 Mass

1.3 Frame & Infill

1.1 POINT / LINE / PLANE TRANSFORMATION GROWTH MOVEMENT SPIRAL LIGHT & SHADOW

PRECEDENT

Barcelona Pavillion by Mies Van der Rohe

PRECEDENT STUDY When I was looking at Barcelona Pavillion, I was inspired by the amazing composition of pure line and plane element. In Mies' work, point line and plane have the simplyfied form and own their logical order. Lghts from points on the wall are just like columns. At this moment, point line and plane are a perfect whole.

POINT / LINE / PLANE MODEL

The concept of the model is the order and transformation. The composition of point line and plane follow the the order of spiral, which express a sense of grow and movement. From different views, point grows, forming line. Line extends, forming plane. And the light and shadow of spiral columns can have movements depends on the location of the sun, which make the space meaningful and add its complexity.

1.2 MASS CONTRAST SOLID & VOLUME DARKNESS & LIGHT UNKOWN & HOPE WARM & COLD

PRECEDENT

Light & Shadow by Barozzi Veiga

PRECEDENT STUDY Through the lonely darkness, we can see hopeful light. Through the huge volume, we can feel strong solid. The concept mass is the contrastS of volume and mass, light and darkness, unkown and hope, warm and cold. All of these elements express a sense of mass.

MASS - CONTRAST SOLID & VOLUME

I was inspired by the precedent, using huge volume underground to express the massive solid. DARKNESS & LIGHT

The space undergroud get light from aboveground through the waterfall. Water contains light, and when it falls, it is just like shining columns, which brings light to the deeper dark space. UNKOWN & HOPE

waterfall has several satges, and no one knows where these shining columns will go. The deeper, the the darker. However, when water in the glass pool aboveground waves, the light through the glass bottom would be shining. And green trees could grow in the underground space because of light and water. It gives me a sense of hope. WARM & COLD

To some extent, mass can be seen as earth. Earth is warm, because earth bring lifes. So in my opinion, mass underground might be a bit warmer than aboveground. I drew a tree but the leaves of the tree has gone, althrough there is sun aboveground. In contrast, trees underground are still green. This kind of contrast lets me feel mass is wonderful.

1.3 Frame & Infill REPETITION & UNIT TRANSPARENCY TEMPORARY & PERMANENT ANTI-GRAVITY

PRECEDENT

House NA by Fujimoto

PRECEDENT STUDY This precedent is from Japanese architect Fujimoto. In his design, the frame is light and pure. The transparency of the structure makes this architecture seems anti-gravity. Natural light is fully used in the house, which is just could be seen as infill.

FRAME & INFILL

In this model, I used suspension structure to express the sense of anti-gravity. And before I made it, I tried several forms of frames using cube element. For the infill, I tested three kinds of materials, which are transparent, translucent and opaque. For the transparent material, I put it on the totally suspension part. So this part seems like there is only frame. For the translucent material, I put it on the partly suspension strucuture as the infill. As for the opaque material, it is mainly used at the part which is connected to the groud. So the sense of antigravity grows logically.

2.0 HERRING ISLAND. A PLACE FOR KEEPING SECRET 2.1 Site analysis 2.2 Conceptacle and Sketch design 2.3 Design development 2.4 Final design Model 2.5 Final design drawings

2.1 Site analysis

ART SCULPTURE & PATHWAY SCALE 1:2000

Heering island is a geographically enclosed island with natural environment. In this project, I choose d t h e valley area of herring island to express the theme “secret”, because secret should not be obvious or in the path circle. The location of “secret” must need people to explore.

2.2 Conceptacle and Sketch design

For secret, we know something, but we don't know all the thing. TRANSLUCENT

TRANSLUCENT & FIGURE

AMBIGUOUS VAGUE ATTRACTIVE LIGHT ILLUSION

ICEBERG & UNKOWN

2.3 Design development

From this transparent cube, I find glass is the best material. So I can adopt translucent glass to express the sense of secret.

New York City 5th Avenue Apple Store

These white lines on this architecture are attractive. And these lines not only reshaped the form of architecture, but also can be seen as frame.

Melbourne Theatre

2.4 Final design Mode

A PLACE FOR KEEPING SECRET In my opinion, I think secret is ambigous and illusional. You can know something of it, but you don't know all the thing. Sometimes you find the clue is right, but sometimes the way is wrong. It needs to be explored by yourself. So as a result, I choosed translucent glass to cut people's sight line, which means whatever you are inside or outside, you can just see figures. If you want to know more, you must come closer. And as people moves, figures will have movement, light and shadow could obtain movement. And to strengthen the empression of illustion and make this architecture more attractive, I used this kind of white guide line which was inspired by the precedent. These guide lines make cubes as a whole and point the way to walk for people. However, only some guide lines are right way. When people arrive the end point guided by white lines, they may find there is no way to go. So this kind of sense is just like the secret. You need to explore the correct direction. At night, because of long tube in white lines, this architecture would be shining and attract people to come. Due to the location is in a valley, when you see this architecture from far away, you can only find the part above the landline, which is just like an iceberg. Only you come and explore, you can find the truth of the illusional secret.

3.0 REFLECTION The three exercise before the project are very helpful to generate ideas of the final design. They aids me to break down the complex design in to easier parts to think about the concepts which may be used in the final design. After these exercise, I get a better understanding of architecture design and design logic. At first I don't know how to express my opinion and how to develop my concept, however, now I think I get some useful thing with the help of tutor. Another important thing I have learned is precedent study. It is inspiring and imperative at the beginning of each exercise. Precedent study is not about borrowing or copying other's ideas, but the understanding of the concept and emotion behind architecture. In the final design project, I have observed many amazing concepts. And I start to try to find my own style to achieve my ideas. In architecture design, although the architecture form is not very complex, it contains many concepts in it. Every point line and plane should have its own meaning, not just for like.
