DESIGN

FOR GOOD SPARK JOY

Art and design often carry an air of complexity that reflect not just a creator’s personal history, but the styles of the day and even the state of technology that plays an ever more intricate place in our lives. What’s often forgotten is meaning and context, and how good design can benefit the body and soul – even if it’s just a small desktop accessory – by bringing to your day something irreplaceably thoughtful, transformative and perhaps even transcendent. The leading works in this year’s DesignInspire 2020 take creativity back to basics by exploring how design in our city can inspire, improve, and ultimately spark more joy in our lives. We’ve meticulously created pieces that celebrate design, break boundaries and challenge trends in ways that bring a smile to our faces, and hopefully to yours too.

Keikko Lee and Rosetta Lau: Hu Keikko Lee與Rosetta Lau:喵

One of the things most enjoyed during days of lockdown and home offices are perhaps the time with our pets. No longer do they need to wait patiently for us to return from the office, when “the office” is right where they take their afternoon naps. While pet owners, too, appreciate their company, our furry friends’ bugging faces and adorable attempts to fight for our attention may be counterproductive to our jobs and sometimes even unsolicited during video-conference meetings and phone calls. Keikko Lee and Rosetta Lau’s Furry Friend Coworkers is a wooden desk that keeps our pets entertained and our stationary organised. A pen tray and magazine racks are complemented with play areas and scratching poles for cats, making coexistence between the hardworking human and the adoring pets a much easier feat at home.

Vincent Woo: Rainbow in the Ocean Vincent Woo:Rainbow in the Ocean

Illustrating his love for concrete’s natural greys and beiges, Vincent Woo’s Rainbow in the Ocean highlights the beauty of this mundane architectural material, and its versatility. The showcasing installation consists of one hundred cubes made of resin and concrete, where each base features a unique landscape. Each individual cube symbolizes life itself – sometimes full of challenges, sometimes relaxing or dull. Through using this everyday material as a medium for his artwork, he invites people to ponder their lifestyle, the world they’re living in and their surroundings. Rainbow in the

Lisa J. Lai and Joel Wong: Balanco Lisa J. Lai與Joel Wong:衡思坐想

Lisa J. Lai and Joel Wong’s Strike a Balance offers a sense of normality and equilibrium in this pandemic-induced new normal. Inspired by pebble towers – symbols of immense patience and calmness – their art work is a number of wooden, irregularly shaped storage boxes that double as stools and could be assembled in a myriad ways depending on user preference, the contents of the each storage box and the location in which they will be placed – exemplary of a fine balance between art and practicality.

Eldage: Art of the Ordinary

Minutiae of everyday life brims with art that’s been handed down through generations. It can be seen in our cultural relics, such as galvanized stencil, seal carving, handcrafted stamping or a rambunctious lions head. There’s a romance and joy in knowing that art infuses every part of our daily lives, waiting for our discovery. Though machines, robots and technology are replacing manual labour to match our demanding, rapid lifestyles, some artisans in our city remain dedicated to honing their crafts in meticulous detail to pass on their heritage and legacy to future generations. As time passes, these artists have become rare; here we showcase exquisite workmanship by three distinguished craftsmen.

Giraffe Leung’s The Leaves that Stay; the City that Fades is a series of artworks that reconstruct Hong Kong’s recognisable landmarks including The Big Buddha, Former Kowloon-Canton Railway Clock Tower, Aqua Luna junk boat, Kowloon City and the tram in leaves of varying colour and transparency. They remind us of the sacrifices in nature to make way for human needs.

REIMAGINE, REPURPOSE, REDESIGN FOR GOOD

HIR Studio: Sha Tin Bench HIR

Embracing the ethos of “from Sha Tin, for Sha Tin” and to encourage proper waste disposal and management among the community, the Sha Tin Bench was inspired by the charismatic Shing Mun River. Not only is it a symbol of community and is the source of the plastics used in design, but its blue and orange colours are also shared by the Sha Tin Town Hall.

The Hong Kong Trade Development Council has partnered with The Hong Kong Institute of Architect to recruit creative inventions themed around “Reimagine, Repurpose, Redesign for Good” so to enhance the relationship among oneself, the community and the world. Submissions could cover a range of categories such as indoor and outdoor spaces design, sustainable architecture, furniture and art instillations, designed with recycled or reused materials.

30 | HONG KONG CREATIVE FORCE

HIR Studio partnered with community waste collection organisations to gather 500kg of HDE (Type 2 plastic) plastic bottles in two months during weekend collection events. What became were trapezoidal moulds, which are rotated in a chain to form fluid, curvilinear long benches that echo the beauty of the Shing Mun River.

School Redesign of Positive Well-being 校園新面貌

The trio of primary school repurposing projects promotes positive learning and student wellbeing by tailoring the space to their distinctive place-making needs. For Po Leung Kuk CASTAR Primary School, a standard computer lab was transformed into a multifunctional STEM room that allows for flexible configurations. The outdoors were realised as another “teacher” with a “Treehouse” of steps, platforms and curving vertical enclosures at Pat Heung Central Primary School’s open lawn. This multi-purpose space acts as a performance stage and playground. Meanwhile, the corridor and activity room were opened up to facilitate interactive pedagogy and a sense of belonging in Fung Kai Liu Yun Sum Primary School.

Catenary Timber Structure

An oft-overlooked architectural material is timber, a carbon negative, low-density and long-lasting material whose force acting on the structure is proportion to the weight of the structure itself. A selfsustaining model is the parabola-like catenary. As a pure tension system that supports its own weight, it promises extensive mass reduction without compromising structural stability. A bridge and Visitor and Education Centre are built in Malaysia to demonstrate its feasibility.
