Competition Overview Rapid prototyping plays an increasing role in every discipline of design. Jewelry designers now use computer-aided modeling and 3D printing technology to produce unique geometry for designs that were previously impossible to create. It is revolutionizing the industry; taking an age old craft and bringing it into the 21st century. This is technology-driven fashion! Help us highlight 3D printing as a new approach for designing visually stimulating statement pieces. Show the world your design by creating wearable art that is equal parts technology and fashion. We’re looking for the best uses of 3D printing for jewelry design — not another string of pearls. Enter your design online. Finalists will be 3D printed and featured in a 4-city, nationally-traveling fashion show, where the 3 winning entries will be announced and highlighted. Rapid Jewelry: Design Competition
Design & Judging Criteria Entries will be reviewed by our Jury on the following criteria:
• Uniqueness of design • Wearability • Fashion innovation • Visual presence • Use of CAD & 3D printing capabilities
Prizes All entries will be featured in an online gallery on designmuseumportland. org/rapidjewelry, and renderings will be shown in our nationally-traveling Rapid Jewelry events and exhibitions. Finalists will be selected by the jury to be 3D printed by Solidscape and other partners — they’ll be featured in our nationally-traveling Rapid Jewelry fashion show, exhibition, and pop-up retail experience in 4 cities: Boston, MA; Portland, OR; San Francisco, CA; and Chicago, IL. In retail finalists will receive royalties on pieces sold. The number of finalists will be determined by the jury based on the overall number and quality of entries submitted. Finalists will receive premium visibility online. 3 winning entries will be chosen by the jury to receive cash prizes: 1st prize, $2,000; 2nd prize, $1000; 3rd prize, $500. These 3 winning designs will be highlighted throughout the nationally-traveling program. Note: prizes are subject to change and winners are solely liable for the payment of all taxes, duties and other similar measures if imposed on the reward pursuant to the legislation of the country of his/her residence, domicile, citizenship, workplace, or any other criterion of similar nature. Eligibility Rapid Jewelry is open to everyone except employees, board members, and interns of Design Museum Portland and their immediate family members. Immediate family members and employees of our Partners, Sponsors, and Jury are also ineligible. Individuals and teams are encouraged to submit design entries. In the case of a winning team, members agree to share the prizes. By entering, each participant warrants that their submission is their original work and does not infringe on any intellectual property rights, trademarks, or copyrights of any other person or organization. Intellectual Property Intellectual and creative property remains with the individual designer or is shared by the design team for each entry. Jury-selected entries grant Design Museum Foundation (our parent organization) a commercial, 1-year exclusive, non-transferable, and non-sub-licensable license for Design Museum Foundation to produce and sell the design in our retail stores and online — designers will receive a fair-market royalty on each sale. All entrants grant Design Museum Foundation a non-commercial, non-exclusive, non-transferable, and non-sub-licensable license of the design for educational, public awareness, and promotional purposes. Submission Guidelines & Process Step 1: Register for the competition Registration fees: • $15 for students • $25 for members of Design Museum Portland & SNAG • $40 for non-members After completing the registration form, within 1 business day, you will receive your registration number, link to entry form, and invitation to a Dropbox folder where you will submit you files, along with a 30-day trial version of Keyshot 5, which we recommend using to create photo-realistic renderings for your entry.
Step 2: Design your piece Designs are not constrained to any particular type of jewelry piece or gender. In the entry form you will describe your piece and how it is worn. Your design must be created in CAD and 3D printable — no need to produce an actual piece for submission — although we do encourage you to prototype! We have three options for printing jury-selected designs: white resin, black resin, or cast & polished sterling silver. You must choose your finish when you submit your entry form — if you choose cast & polished sterling silver, your design must be cast-able. Note: we recommend saving your sketches, mock-ups, and prototypes — these could be included in the Rapid Jewelry exhibition should your entry be chosen by the jury.
Step 3: Create your submission files You must upload a neutral file format — .STEP or .IGS — of your design to your Dropbox folder. You must also create 3-10 renderings of your design to submit along with your 3D CAD file. Your renderings should show the piece from multiple angles and if possible show the piece on the human form. Renderings should each be saved as .JPG sized 1920 x 1080 pixels, 72dpi. We recommend using Keyshot 5 to create these photo-realistic images. All files should be named with your registration number, i.e. 123456.igs, 123456_1.jpg, 123456_2.jpg.
Step 4: Prepare your entry form, files, and submit All entry files must be saved into your Dropbox folder before your submit your entry form. To submit, compete the entry form with your contact information, registration number, and entry description. Then you’re done! Note: you must have a separate registration number for each design you wish to submit.

Terms & Conditions These Terms and Conditions are agreed between Design Museum Foundation (“Organizer”) and the jewelry designer (“Designer”), an Individual taking part in the Rapid Jewelry Design Competition by uploading a unique jewelry design (“Jewelry”). Organizer and Designer mutually agree to the terms and conditions of this License Agreement. Organizer wishes to obtain limited rights to use Designer’s Jewelry for the purposes indicated below. Designer is willing to permit that use subject to the following terms and conditions. 1. Definitions 1.1 “Licensed Material” means the unique Jewelry design uploaded to the Rapid Jewelry online competition website. 1.2 “Licensed Use” means Jewelry will be used within and to promote a traveling exhibition of 3D printed jewelry which will educate the public on design and 3D printing 2. Grant of Rights 2.1 Designer grants Organizer a 1-year exclusive, non-transferrable and non-sub-licensable license right to use the Licensed Material, solely for the Licensed Use, and subject to all restrictions specified in this Agreement. 2.2 The rights granted to Organizer by Designer and obtained by Organizer as a result of or in connection with this Agreement are limited use license rights only, and nothing in this Agreement assigns any or all of Designer’s ownership rights in the Licensed Material. 3. Use of the Licensed Material 3.1 The rights granted under this Agreement are limited to the Licensed Use. Organizer represents that any actual or ultimate product incorporating the Licensed Material will be a faithful rendition of use. 3.2 Organizer may crop Licensed Material, provided that the editorial integrity of the Licensed Material is not compromised, but may not, under any circumstances, alter, change, or tamper with Licensed Material without Designers express written permission. 3.3 Designer’s trademarks, logos, and service marks, are and will remain the sole property of Designer. Nothing in this Agreement confers upon Organizer any right of ownership in Designer’s trademarks, logos, or service marks. 3.4 In partial consideration for the license conveyed hereby, Organizer agrees not to, directly or indirectly, challenge, contest, impair, or invalidate Designer’s rights in Designer’s Jewelry as it relates to the Licensed Use. 3.5 Organizer agrees to include a credit line adjacent to the Licensed Material. 3.6 Organizer must immediately notify Designer if it becomes aware or suspects that any third party that has gained access to the Licensed Material through Organizer or is wrongfully using the Licensed Material, in whole or in part, or is violating any of Designer’s intellectual property rights. 4. Prohibited Uses 4.1 Organizer may not at any time: 4.1.1 Use any colorable imitation of any Licensed Material, or any variant form of any Licensed Material not specifically approved; 4.1.2 Incorporate Licensed Material into a logo, trademark, or service mark; 4.1.3 Make Licensed Material available in any medium in a manner intended to allow or invite persons to extract or alter Licensed Material; 4.1.4 Take any action that would bring Licensed Material into public disrepute including use of Licensed Material for any defamatory, or otherwise unlawful use, whether directly or in context or juxtaposition with specific subject matter; or 4.1.5 Make any claim or indication that Designer endorses Organizer’s products or services or portray itself as an agent, servant, or employee of Designer. 5. Transfer of License and Licensed Material 5.1 Designer will provide Jewelry to Organizer free of charge, to support the Organizer’ educational and public awareness mission and to offer for sale exclusively for 1-year in Organizer’s on-site and online retail channels , granting the rights to use the Licensed Material under this Agreement. 5.2 Designer will receive 50% of the net income from each sale, distributed by Organizer quarterly. 6. Disclaimers, Limitation of Liability, and Indemnification 6.1 Designer represents that it, according to its information and belief, has all necessary rights and authority to enter into and perform this Agreement. Except as to Designer’s own copyrights or trademarks, Designer has not obtained any permissions, licenses, or releases for the use of any names, likenesses, trademarks, service marks, logos, or works of authorship depicted in the Licensed Material and Organizer is solely responsible for

determining what other, if any, permissions, licenses, or releases are necessary for the Licensed Use. 6.2 Designer makes no other representations or warranties, express or implied, as to the Licensed Material, including, without limitation, any implied warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. Designer will not be liable for any punitive, special, indirect, consequential, or incidental damages, or any other damages, costs, or losses arising out of this Agreement, even if Designer has been advised of the possibility of such damages, costs, or losses. 6.3 Organizer must defend, indemnify, and hold Designer harmless from all damages, liabilities, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys’ fees) arising out of or as a result of claims by third parties relating to: 6.3.1 Organizer’s use of any Licensed Material outside the scope of this Agreement; 6.3.2 Any other actual or alleged breach by Organizer of this Agreement; or 6.3.3 Organizer’s failure to obtain any required permission, license, or release. 7. Term and Termination 7.1 The term of this Agreement is 1 year from the date of selected designs announcement, unless terminated earlier under this Article 7. 7.2 This Agreement and all rights granted under this Agreement will automatically terminate without notice from Designer if Organizer: 7.2.1 Breaches any term of this Agreement and fails to remedy the breach within 30 days of receiving written notice of the breach from Designer; 7.2.2 Attempts to assign, sublicense, transfer, or otherwise convey rights under this Agreement, without first obtaining Designer’s written consent, any of the rights granted to Organizer under this Agreement; 7.2.3 Uses the Licensed Material in a manner in violation of, or otherwise inconsistent with, the restrictions imposed by or in connection with Article 3 of this Agreement; or 7.2.4 Uses the Licensed Material in a manner not expressly permitted by this Agreement. 7.3 All rights granted by this Agreement, including, without limitation, Organizer’s right to use the Licensed Material, will expire upon termination of this Agreement, and upon termination Organizer must immediately cease and desist from all use of the Licensed Material. 8. General Provisions 8.1 Relationship of the Parties. Nothing contained in the Agreement shall be construed as creating any agency, partnership, or other form of joint enterprise between the Parties. The relationship between the Parties shall at all times be that of independent contractors. Neither Party shall have authority to contract for or bind the other in any manner whatsoever. The Agreement confers no rights upon either Party except those expressly granted herein. 8.2 Notices. Notices or other communications required by this Agreement will be sufficiently made or given if emailed or mailed to the address stated below, or to the last address specified in writing by the intended recipient. 8.2.1 If to Designer: email address on record at Organizer 8.2.2 If to Organizer: Design Museum Foundation, PO Box 990938 Boston, MA 02199 or info@designmuseumfoundation.org 8.3 Assignment. This Agreement, with the rights and privileges it creates, is assignable only with the written consent of both Parties. 8.4 Governing Law. The Agreement shall be construed in accordance with, and all disputes hereunder, shall be governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. 8.5 Headings. Headings are solely for convenience of reference and are not part of, and may not be used to construe, this Agreement. 8.6 Severability. If any provision of this Agreement is invalid, illegal, or unenforceable, the validity, legality and enforceability of the remaining provisions will not in any way be affected or impaired. A waiver of any breach of this Agreement does not waive any other breach of the same or other provision of this Agreement. A waiver is not effective unless made in writing. 8.7 Entire Agreement. This Agreement contains the entire understanding of the Parties as to the Licensed Material, and supersedes all other written and oral agreements between the Parties as to the Licensed Material. This Agreement may be modified only by a written amendment signed by the Parties. Agreed to and Accepted by uploading Jewelry and taking part in the competition. 8.8 Void where prohibited.
