Extraordinary Playscapes Imagination Needs Places to Thrive Enjoy Extraordinary Playscapes, a free exhibition showcasing the art, history, science, and importance of play, featuring design stories behind over 40 international playgrounds, interactive experiences, and playable installations. From towering treetop playgrounds to hand-knit crochet installations, visitors will discover how designers translate play objectives into state-of-the-art and meaningful outdoor environments. Take the full tour with this Playground Passport. We’re highlighting local play spaces and creating some new ones as well! Our kiosks at playgrounds around town tell the story behind these amazing outdoor playscapes.

5:00pm • Exhibition Opening Reception Be the first to see Extraordinary Playscapes! Celebrate the opening night, meet designers behind some amazing playgrounds in the show, and most importantly, play!
6:30pm • FILM SCREENING • The Land: Adventure Playground Learn about The Land, a creative adventure playground in Wales, and discuss adventure play in Portland with Will Hathaway, founder of Multnomah Arts Center.
1:00pm • KIDS WORKSHOP • Pop-Up Adventure Play Join this child-driven community event where kids can build their own creative playscapes using materials such as tape, cardboard, tools, fabric, and more!
6:30pm • UNITE • How Portland Does Play A panel discussion on play in Portland, featuring: Michael Laris, Playworld; Cody Goldberg, Harper’s Playground; Katie Shook, MUDLAND; and Christina Frank, MIG.

Discover PlayForm 7 — an exciting new “play sculpture” that merges play and public art. It’s designed to be played on and provides different experiences than a traditional playground. Playworld’s newly designed piece blends play forms with an array of architectural styles that inspire imaginative play experiences. Climb, slide, hop, sit, socialize and play your way through this new installation at the North Park Blocks! PlayForm 7 is open for play through January 7th, and will be installed permanently at Ventura Park in the summer of 2017. Design Museum Portland

Harper’s Playground is a universally accessible playground dedicated to promoting community, inclusion, and play. With accessible pathways and equipment, a sand pit with pumpable water and sensory play elements, mini-rock climbing walls, and various rope climbing features, its design allows for people of all ages and abilities to play together.

Visit The Fields Park for a variety of urban play and active experiences! Featuring a large open yard, children’s playground, dog park, and gardens, the space offers recreational and play activities for all ages. Explore Khunamokwst Park, the first developed park in the Cully neighborhood and first Portland Parks & Recreation park to enjoy a name indigenous to the land it sits on. Khunamokwst — a Chinook wawa name meaning “together” — features an innovative nature play area with boulders for climbing, hills for sliding, and an interactive water play area. The park is also home to walking and jogging paths and a small skate park.
