GOOD MORNING ELLICOTTVILLE ... Every now and then the sunrise in Ellicottville is more than worth waking up early to see. On such days, it is more than acceptable to spend a few minutes with your eyes glued to the skyline while you take in the incredible colors.
The tendency to help others runs deep to the core of Holiday Valley’s persona. Constantly hosting events, HV rarely makes it about itself and all about the organization in need. This year, two events stick out - one is in its inaugural season, the other a well-known tradition. Both will raise money for children and adults with disabilities. Making a Home ... In the Snow: Nike Snowboard Boots are Gaining Notoriety
Chances are, if you’re visiting Ellicottville, NY during the winter months, you’re here to ride or ski our two great resorts. Subsequently, it’s safe to say you’re also spending some time shopping our ski/snowboard outfitters in the village, looking for the best in hardgoods and softgoods. This month, SNOWED-IN is dropping by The Boardroom to look at one of the top boot lines on the market, produced by none other than Nike. Yes, Nike makes some really great footwear - for basketball, tennis, running stuff ... fortunately due to this, it translates to some pretty incredible snowboard boots as well ... page 17

This month’s artist spotlight focuses on a young woman from Cattaraugus, NY, who after completing a major in art and a minor in sculpture at Daemen College, returned to her hometown knowing that she wanted to pursue her artistic endeavors, but wasn’t exactly sure what direction that path would lead her down. Today, she is carving out a new niche in the local art scene. Meet Sarah Walker ... page 13

By Pat Morgan It won’t be long before all eyes are glued to televisions around the world as the 2014 Winter Olympics (officially the XXII Olympic Winter Games for those savvy in Roman numerals … or the 22nd Winter Olympics), are scheduled to take place from Feb. 6-23, 2014 in Sochi, Russia. The Olympics need no further explanation - some of the most exciting sports, coupled with the best athletes, make for some of the most memorable sporting accomplishments in history. In total, 98 events in 15 winter sport disciplines will be held, challenging both your sleep cycle (as many events held live will be at awkward time differences) and your DVR storage limit. Sochi, along with neighboring resort town Krasnaya Polyana, was selected as the host city in July 2007, during the 119th IOC Session held in Guatemala City. The Sochi Olympics will be the first Olympics in the Russian Federation since the breakup of the USSR, which hosted the 1980 Winter Olympics and played host to one of the most historic American triumphs, “The Miracle on Ice.” One of the exciting things about Ellicottville, is just how far its reach extends. It’s never a surprise to come across someone who knows the “Legend of EVL” in a resort town you’re visiting, or to see the iconic alpine-oval “EVL” sticker emblazoned on bumpers and Thule boxes throughout the country. But, the one cool thing about Ellicottville, is just how much Olympic connection our HoliMont and Holiday Valley Resort communities have. We begin with Alex Wilson, who netted over 55 career World Cup starts, and finally earned himself a spot for the ’98 Nagano Olympics. As a matter of fact, if you ever wind up in the Yodeler Lodge at Holiday Valley, you can find a bib of Alex’s, which he donated to the resort following his 10th place finish in those Olympic Games. Without a doubt though, the “bell of the ball” so to speak for local Olympiad culture would be none other than Jillian Vogtli, who began her career at just 10-years-old on the slopes of Holiday Valley. She earned her spot on the U.S. Olympic Team in 1996 after some impressive Nor-Am finishes, and began her World Cup career in 1997. Vogtli went on to compete in the Salt Lake City ’02, and Turin (Italy) ’06 games (finishing 18th & 11th respectfully in moguls) and also boasts two U.S. National Champion crowns. Speaking of local décor, you can see an ode to Jillian inside The Ellicottville Depot, which proudly displays one of her bibs, as well as some action photos. Although not necessarily tied to Ellicottville, the Western New York region also has produced some other high caliber Olympians, including AJ Kitt (Swain) a downhill ski racer, Alex Wilson (Buffalo Ski Club) an aerialist, and Patrick Kane of Stanley Cup & Olympic Silver Medal fame. We caught up with some Ellicottville locals (as well as one northern “local”) to put our finger on the pulse of what the Olympics mean to them as well … Spencer Timkey on behalf of The Boardroom Snowboard Shop: “… awesome that slopestyle was added; a discipline of the snowboarding (and skiing) that showcases more all-around talent, than just halfpipe. We’re also excited about the American team … it’s STACKED! Our GNU (a snowboard brand carried at the shop) girl Jamie Anderson is going for slopestyle gold, and looks to be a favorite. We’re also obviously going to be keeping an eye on U.S. hockey, hoping Ryan Miller starts in goal - he’s itching for that gold medal! Should be a great tournament all around, with NHL powerhouses like Alex Ovechkin who has been a freak this year and you know he’s fired up to play in Mother Russia!” Antwan Clayton, honorary EVL local, snowboard pioneer at Holiday Valley: “Let’s get one thing clear: I LOVE THE WINTER OLYMPICS! Living in the self-proclaimed “Centre (ed: remember he’s Canadian!) of the Hockey Universe,” of course I’m excited to watch Team Canada defend the gold medal. I think the men’s downhill skiing events are the rock-star events of the games for sure. I’d watch it over snowboarding any day!” Dash Hegeman, Marketing Director, HoliMont Ski Resort: “Well, from a snowsports industry perspective, the Winter Olympics are always great in terms of exposure to skiing and snowboarding. A year ago you weren’t seeing a high profile skier like Ted Ligety promote Vicks NyQuil on TV, and now you are. The Olympics expose casual viewers to the sports that we here in Ellicottville hold so near and dear to us. By doing so, hopefully it helps to create new, passionate skiers and snowboarders. From a personal perspective, I love seeing the competition. It doesn’t matter if it’s in alpine racing, the biathlon, or a new event like slopestyle snowboarding; watching athletes who have trained their entire lives for this one opportunity to represent their country is an incredible experience. I’m sure we are going to see some amazing performances!” Regardless of your interest in athletics, these 2014 Sochi Olympics will have something for everyone. For this writer, I look forward to the integration of slopestyle into the games, as well as the undoubted FIS judging debate that will follow what was once a fairly non-standardized event. I’ll also be eager to watch former freestyle snowboard and freeski champions who have transitioned into boardercross/skiercross roles. In some of the more traditional Olympic sports, of course I’ll be chanting “U-S-A” and hoping to rid ourselves of the golden goal taunts from our friendly neighbors to the north, as well as taking in some of the more intense events like Super G, Moguls, Aerials, along with Bobsled, Luge and Skeleton. With that said, make sure you tune in and more importantly, I encourage you to get out and watch the games socially within the Village of Ellicottville. You just may encounter some former athletes, Olympic hopefuls, or great conversation about the most captivating sporting event on Earth.

TRADITION x FUN x SUPPORT The tendency to help others runs deep to the core of Holiday Valley Resort’s persona. Constantly hosting events, Holiday Valley rarely makes it about itself and all about the organization that needs help. This year, two events stick out - one is in its inaugural season, the other a well-known tradition - but both will raise money to help others. I highly encourage you to come out and support Aspire WNY’s “Ski the Valley” event and the always-anticipated Penguin Paddle!

ASPIRE: SKI THE VALLEY
PENGUIN PADDLE
For every one bad thing you hear about in the news, there are always 10 good things to counteract it … you just need to look a little deeper. Aspire of WNY, an organization dedicated to helping those with developmental disabilities, is one of the latter and cordially invites you to its inaugural “Ski the Valley” event at Holiday Valley on Sunday, Feb. 9. Its history dates to the 1940s, when the Moss family began crusading for better treatment of those who had cerebral palsy. Over the years, the organization has evolved into an all-encompassing beacon of hope for individuals diagnosed with intellectual disability, epilepsy, brain injury and other neurological diseases.
If you’ve been around Holiday Valley, then you know about the Penguin Paddle. If you haven’t been around Holiday Valley, then you need to know about the Penguin Paddle! An unlikely occurrence over 25 years ago has turned into one of the best known and sought-out events at Holiday Valley. A group of friends from Cleveland, Ohio cooked out at Yodeler Lodge (back then known as The Middle Chalet … where has the time gone?) and proceeded to race down the lower part of Yodeler in garbage bags. The Penguin Paddle was born.
Although not the first of its kind, this year will mark the first that an Aspire event will take place at Holiday Valley. In previous years, Kissing Bridge played host, but Megan Babarid, the special events coordinator for Aspire, said that change is always good.
It turned into something more than a fun afternoon activity between friends, so in 1988, they decided to turn it into something tangible. The group approached the Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program, and the partnership was born.
“Kissing Bridge was an awesome host,” she said. “But we wanted to switch it up. When we approached Holiday Valley about the possibility of an event, they loved the idea and became instantly accommodating.”
“It started by the participants asking for change in coffee cans,” said Mary Ellen Racich, who heads up the Lounsbury Adaptive Program. “It has turned into our largest fundraiser. It’s so neat to see people of all ages come out and have a fun time while supporting a good cause.”
The primary reason for the switch was the noteworthy presence of the Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program - one of Holiday Valley’s shining traits - and its wheelchair accessibility.
The adaptive ski program helps those with disabilities either return to the sport they love or start skiing/snowboarding. It’s one of the best facets of Holiday Valley.
“This is the first year that the individuals we serve will be able to ski with us,” Babirad said. “One of the more appealing factors of Holiday Valley is how awesome the adaptive ski program is. It definitely was one of the biggest factors in our decision to move the event.”
“There’s a food tent - lunch has always been and will always remain $5,” Racich said. “Also, there’s a silent auction and a raffle which both offer excellent prizes, such as a season pass to Holiday Valley, a $500 travel voucher and a pair of skis.”
Open to the public, “Ski the Valley” will be one of the top feel-good events of the year. Holiday Valley’s Youth Marketing Specialist, Pat Morgan, said events like these help the positivity levels. “A lot of times, we worry about trivial things,” he said. “We love hosting events like this because it just projects a good vibe around the entire resort. When you see the smiles of individuals and volunteers alike, you know you’re doing a good job.”
Typically, the event draws around 400 participants. If the weather cooperates, many more tend to show up. Even if you don’t want to race down the lower half of Yodeler in a garbage bag, you can still come out and support the movement.
There are three options to choose from: the Lift Ticket Option ($60 for a lift ticket, $70 for a ticket/rental), the Tubing Option (all-day tubing pass for $35) or the Meal-Only Option ($25). All of the options include a meal. If you go with the Lift Ticket Option, there’s an option for a free lesson. If you’re interested in participating, head to www.AspireWNY.org. Want to make a weekend out of it? Mention Aspire WNY when you call the Inn at Holiday Valley or the Tamarack Club (must book for both Friday and Saturday nights) and receive a discount. For more information, you can call Aspire at 716-505-5514 or Holiday Valley at 716-699-2345.
It costs just $1 to participate in the Penguin Paddle races, and while helmets are required, it’s fun for kids and adults alike. The money that’s raised goes towards purchasing equipment, volunteer training, a Veteran’s Day program and scholarship fund for disabled individuals in local counties. “The Paddle would not be successful if it wasn’t for Holiday Valley, the community, businesses that donate, the Lounsbury volunteers and the original group that started the whole thing,” Racich said. “With over 50 volunteers, we teach over 250 lessons per season. The Paddle allows us to do that!” GET READY TO SLIDE ON SATURDAY, FEB. 22. FOR MORE INFORMATION, CALL HOLIDAY VALLEY AT 716-699-2345.

Telestock 2014
Feb. 28th ... a day of peace, love and telemark skiing By Spencer Timkey
Our local ski and snowboard population is becoming more adept at mastering alternative disciplines, one of such being telemark skiing. There are well-known pockets of telemark skiers in the US, and The City Garage has turned itself into the go-to spot in the area for those who wish to learn/progress on the free heel. Over 10 years ago, the boys at The Garage - knowing that there was no outlet for telemark rental stuff - decided to host an event that would allow people to get out on telemark skis. In essence, a ski demo. “We wanted to get it directly on-hill,” said Trey Clauss, who manages The Garage. “It’s just like a typical ski demo. It’s a part of skiing that we thought wasn’t getting enough attention, so we wanted to get people out on it.” This year’s Telestock is set for Friday, Feb. 28 at Holiday Valley Resort. With Scarpa boots and K2 skis tuned up and ready to go, Telestock is the perfect way to try something you haven’t yet.
photos / TooTallTom
“We used to do it at the bottom of Mardi Gras, but now it’s at the Yodeler Lodge under the Champagne warming hut,” Clauss said. “Too-Tall Tom is our resident grillmaster, and we feature local sausage right from Dom’s Butcher Block. Holiday Valley also offers discounted lift tickets for those participating. Everything else is free. It’s an awesome day.” If you’ve never tried telemark skiing before, this is the perfect time for you to start. Although there is no formal instruction, a couple of volunteers will be floating around to assist and give you pointers. “It’s always a good turnout,” Clauss said. “We’ve had it in the rain, snow and sun. Regardless of what the weather is like, people still come out and have a good time. We want to help the growth of tele-skiing, and this is one way that we’re doing our part to help that.”
For more information on this year’s Telestock event, head in and talk to the boys at The City Garage, 5 Monroe Street in Ellicottville, or give them a shout at 716-699-2054.

By Megan Sorokes Boarding for Breast Cancer - B4BC - now in its sixth year at Holiday Valley, is a nationwide initiative that brings skiers and snowboarders to the slopes to raise awareness of breast cancer and funds for breast cancer research. This year’s B4BC will take place on Saturday, Feb. 15. Samantha Timkey, co-organizer of the Ellicottville-based event, said the entire day is “exciting, from set-up to breakdown” and “has enough momentum to really have an impact.” “It’s really cool to be part of something so big,” Timkey said. “Breast cancer is something that everyone has either dealt with or knows someone who is dealing with it, so there is never a lack of participation for this event.” For Pat Morgan, Holiday Valley’s Youth Marketing Director and Terrain Park Manager, B4BC “brings a sense of community” to the area where “you can actually see the impact of the funds being put to use rather than being a drop in the bucket.” “The outreach is important,” Morgan said. “It’s educating young and old, men and women on the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, and of course, the local donation [to Camp Good Days] is paramount. It’s extremely rewarding to be able to give back locally.” Timkey agreed, noting, “Many of the funds raised go to Camp Good Days, and seeing the reaction of the staff and participants will bring tears to your eyes. They are so appreciative of what we’re doing, and it just makes you want to work harder and raise more money the following year.” While the main focus of Camp Good Days is to provide a better quality of life for children with cancer, it may surprise some to know the organization now has a women’s oncology program, which started in 1990. Lisa Booz, the camp’s Regional Director for Western New York said funds raised at B4BC benefit that program. “We started the women’s oncology program in the early 1990s,” Booz said, noting the oncology program mirrors the children’s program, but has an adult focus. “The funds that are donated to us through B4BC mean a lot to us because we’re looked at as primarily helping children, and it’s so nice to have such a well known and well respected event raise funds and awareness for our women’s oncology program. We don’t receive any government funding - it’s all individuals and corporations. Each year, we have approximately 1,500 participants in our program. At a cost of $1,000 a person a year, it’s a lot of money each year. B4BC is something that helps, and we are honored to be a part of this successful event.” Timkey and Morgan both work closely with countless departments, managers and volunteers to make the event a success, but there are always challenges. “Truthfully, you can’t put a number on it,” Timkey said. “There are so many participants, volunteers, and spectators that travel near and far for this event - not to mention all the people that make it happen, including
those who volunteer services and the generous donations of local businesses.” Morgan added, “There are a lot of details and moving parts to manage. We have a solid core of people invested in this event, which makes it fairly easy, but there are always surprises.” Timkey agreed, noting it’s difficult to plan new, unique events each year, but that “we have a pretty good blueprint down for how the day needs to go to make it as efficient as possible with the resources we have available.” While the “footprint” of the event changes from year to year, Morgan said the key features and highlights of B4BC include women-specific learn-to-ride clinics, freeride and terrain park events, and a tribute ride. “The tribute ride is a group ride down Mardi Gras,” Morgan explained. “Participants ring a bell they purchase here celebrating the cause, a survivor, or someone they have lost along the way.” After a day on the slopes, participants of B4BC are invited to enjoy a reception, which includes a silent auction. “The event includes something for everyone, be it through raffles or on-hill events,” Morgan said. “There is an excitement generated during this event unlike any other. All ages and backgrounds come from near and far. It’s great to be a part of this event on whichever level you choose.” Timkey and Booz agreed, noting how impressive it is to see everyone work together. “It just creates a sense of goodwill and community among the entire spectrum,” Timkey said. “Together we can make a difference, and it’s great that so many people come out every year to support the event.” Booz added, “I look forward to the camaraderie present. I know not everyone knows everyone else present, but all the participants seem to be working as a team to raise money and awareness for breast cancer. People seem to get into this event, and it is really low key and fun.” Timkey also emphasized the importance of Holiday Valley’s role in the event by saying, “Everyone at Holiday Valley stops at nothing to make sure B4BC is a success. The resort is so accommodating, and we are fortunate to live in an area that benefits so heavily from their generosity.” She also noted the increased presence of the east coast region with B4BC. “I’m not sure how much focus they gave us (the East Coast) before we came along, but we are definitely on their radar now,” she said. “There are talks of outreach programs more regionally located to benefit our area, and there is more of a national spotlight on our event, which is great for everyone involved.” Morgan said, “There’s a great deal of pride involved in B4BC when all is said and done. I’m most impressed by the generosity and ‘magic’ of the Ellicottville community and enjoy the ‘we did it’ feel to the event.” Anyone interested in participating in this year’s B4BC can register the day of or in advance at www.holidayvalley.com. For more information, contact Holiday Valley at 716-699-2345.

Kids Escpaing Drugs SkiScape was a huge success, Members Day saw a nice mix of HoliMont Members come together and dine over a huge potluck lunch, the annual HoliMont Cocktail Party drew a great mix of HoliMont Members and guests, weekday groups have been experiencing the midweek excitement of HoliMont, lots of great music has been played at numerous apres ski parties, and we closed out the month with the always popular, ever growing Contractors Ski Day on January 31, where contracting businesses from all over brought their employees to HoliMont for a day of fun and networking on (and off) the slopes.
FOXWOOD WARMING HUT
The new warming hut (dubbed Foxwood) has been a tremendous hit this season. HoliMont Member Christopher Cove provided us with this artistic shot of the structure.
SKISCAPE
On Sunday, January 5, the Kids Escaping Drugs organization came down to HoliMont to host the 16th Annual SkiScape event. Every year just following the New Year, Kids Escaping Drugs partners up with HoliMont in order to raise funds for the development of its facilities and the continuation of its programs in Western New York.

IN THE PARK
The parks at HoliMont are fun for all ages and ability levels. With our great selection of elements and jumps, you will be sure to find something to help you progress your park abilities. Helmets are required in all HoliMont Terrain Parks.
SNOWSPORTS
It is safe to say that everyone who skis or snowboards has a desire to improve their abilities. That’s where the HoliMont Snowsports School comes into play. This skilled team of snowsports enthusiasts help coach everyone from complete beginners to seasoned skiers (both alpine and tele) and snowboarders. Take a lesson today and improve your skills out on the slopes.
SNOWMAKING
Making snow is such an important part of the east coast ski industry, and HoliMont is very proud of its snowmaking capabilities. Near the end of January, Ellicottville received a nice stretch of cold weather, which allowed us to do some very effective snowmaking. In fact, we should now be finished with snowmaking for the season.
SCENIC MOMENTS
Sometimes some of the most picturesque moments at HoliMont happen during non-operating hours. Obviously the fun happens when the slopes are open but every now and then some amazing sights materialize when we are closed.
For over 50 years, families and snowsports enthusiasts from miles around have converged on HoliMont, North America’s largest private ski area devoted to family skiing adventures. Generations of members have been drawn in by the amazing skiing, only to fall in love with the warm, community atmosphere that makes HoliMont the kind of place you never want to leave. During the week, HoliMont is happy to welcome the public and groups. Our eight lifts service over 50 slopes and trails. Head to www.holimont.com.

Annual SKI DAY FOR UNITED WAY Set for March 6 @ HoliMont
By Megan Sorokes Ever wonder how skiing and snowboarding support the needs of the community? For the United Way of Cattaraugus County, every skier and snowboarder counts at the organization’s annual Ski Day for United Way, held each March at HoliMont Ski Area in Ellicottville, NY. This year’s event is slated for Thursday, March 6. “This event is one of HoliMont’s ongoing efforts to help support the local community, while allowing participants to enjoy a fun day on the slopes,” said Dash Hegeman, Marketing Director for HoliMont Ski Area. “HoliMont was founded on the idea of family unity, and we take pride in being able to help the surrounding community.” Gail Vida Smith, Administration and Finance Manager for the United Way of Cattaraugus County, said the event, which is organized and managed by United Way staff and volunteers, is a great way to support the agencies that receive donor dollars from the organization, which serves to support community programs. “This fundraiser, now in its 7th year, is open to the public, ski clubs, companies and students,” she said, noting that previous board members initiated the event, which brings in participants from Pennsylvania, Ohio, Connecticut, Maine and Canada. Ski Day for United Way began at the initiative of several former board members, including Lettie Chilson, an avid skier, who met with Candace Plants, Executive Director at United Way of Cattaraugus County, Inc., and staff at HoliMont in 2007. “In 2007, the United Way of Cattaraugus County was looking for ways to engage the community throughout the county throughout the year,” Chilson said. “Olean had, for years, been the foci of events and annual fall campaign efforts … an Ellicottville-based event seemed like a natural fit to our objective. This event was one of several actions initiated in our effort to bring the United Way message to other areas of the county.” She went on to explain that the event provides multiple benefits to the area. “It is our only winter event and highlights the year ‘round opportunities we have to help our community. It not only raises needed funds but provides participants an opportunity to spend a fun day interacting with our volunteer board members and members of supported agencies that attend.”

The entry fee for Ski Day for United Way is $60, which includes an all-day lift pass donated by HoliMont, a long-sleeve event T-shirt, continental breakfast, gourmet lunch by Dina’s Restaurant, after-ski snacks, and entry into the Poker Run. Smith explained the run, sponsored by CUTCO, is a ski activity that provides skiers with a playing card at the end of select runs at HoliMont. “Each time a skier comes down the hill between 1pm and 3pm, a volunteer gives the skier a playing card. The skier presenting the best natural poker hand wins a full set of CUTCO chef knives,” she said, noting that over 150 participants competed in the Poker Run last year. “The entire event is a complete hoot! This is a great way to have fun, meet new friends, network, get a bit of exercise, and support the wonderful agencies receiving donor dollars from the United Way.” With all proceeds from Ski Day for United Way benefitting the organization and its area programs, it’s critical for the community to participate. “The United Way of Cattaraugus County supports agencies that touch each and every one of us sometime in our lives,” Chilson said. “This is an excellent opportunity for local organizations and businesses to highlight their support. Smith added, “It’s a great deal and many Ski Clubs join us for the day. “With HoliMont donating the ski passes, we put together a great and affordable package to raise funds for our area programs. It’s a great value and tons of fun!” For more information about Ski Day for United Way, or United Way of Cattaraugus County, visit www.uwcattco.org or call 716-372-3620.

SNOWED-IN ~ FEBRUARY 2014 ... Page 13
A closer look with:
Sarah Walker COMMISSIONED ARTWORK AT: HOLIMONT SKI AREA Head to the Foxwood Warming Hut
Art is a pretty subjective topic. It’s incredibly difficult to define and even harder to produce at a substantial level. Art can be a painting, a drawing, a poem, a sculpture; the possibilities are really endless. Art can even be a large slab of wood. At least, it can be if you put it in the right hands.
By Dash Hegeman
Carving Out a New Niche in the Local Art Scene Meet Sarah Walker, a young woman from Cattaraugus, NY, who after completing a major in art and a minor in sculpture at Daemen College, returned to her hometown knowing that she wanted to pursue her artistic endeavors, but wasn’t exactly sure what direction that path would lead her down. Last April, Sarah decided to try her hand at something completely new to her. Chainsaw carving. Her inspiration was a chainsaw artist whom she spoke with at a festival who encouraged her to give it a try. “I have always been fascinated by chainsaw carvers and the talent they possess,” said Walker. “I used to only enjoy drawing and painting, so I wanted to challenge myself with something different.” Some of the challenges went beyond what she ever anticipated. “Being left handed was a huge obstacle; they don’t make them (chainsaws) left handed, so all of my carvings are done right handed. Holding a normal chainsaw “backwards” for a left-handed person is out of the question and dangerous.” To put that in context, tonight when you go and brush your teeth, try doing it with the opposite hand and see how it feels. Then picture trying to make very precise cuts with a 13 lb. Echo CS-600p with 20” bar while controlling it with your weak hand. For the finer cuts, Sarah uses a Stihl MS 170 with a 10” specialty dime bar. Ironically, the lack of being able to use her dominant hand isn’t even the biggest dilemma in Sarah’s mind. “The hardest part is finding the right log for each carving,” she said. “I always pick what carving I am going to do before I find the log. And I try to visualize the carving within the log while it’s still in the woods. It makes actually carving it so much easier.” Walker’s portfolio is growing quickly. Already, she has over a dozen pieces to her name. She has even been commissioned by HoliMont Ski Area (where she works part-time in the main office throughout the ski season) to do two pieces for HoliMont’s new Foxwood warming hut at the top of Cascade and Greer. One piece was a sign that says “Foxwood,” which has been completed and the other will be of a fox, which she is working on now. Walker says that her favorite piece that she has done so far was of a raccoon holding a welcome sign and that, thus far, the most difficult piece was her first piece - a bald eagle. That said, the bald eagle must have intrigued her because she has another one in the works that she has scheduled for this coming spring. “I plan to do a large bald eagle landing to grab prey,” stated Walker. “The log is about 1,000 lbs. so it will be my biggest project yet.” Walker has plans to eventually open a store in her new barn where people can come and see (and purchase) her works. If you are interested in contacting her about having a piece made, you can email Sarah directly at swalker016@gmail.com.

NIKE SNOWBOARD BOOTS GAINING NOTORIETY. FIND THEM AT THE BOARDROOM SNOWBOARD SHOP.
PRODUCT
WELCOME TO THE ATLANTIC CITY BUYING SHOW
By Spencer Timkey
By Pat Morgan Chances are, if you’re visiting Ellicottville, NY during the winter months, you’re here to ride or ski our two great ski resorts - HoliMont and Holiday Valley. Subsequently, it’s safe to say you’re also spending some time shopping in some of the great ski/snowboard specialty shops in the village, looking for the best of the best in hardgoods and softgoods. This month in SNOWED-IN, we’re dropping by The Boardroom to look at one of the best boot lines on the market, produced by none other than Nike. You may be scratching your head, thinking, “Nike? I thought they made basketball, tennis, running stuff?!” Well, you’re right - they do, and as you probably know, it’s some pretty great footwear. Fortunately due to this, it translates to some pretty incredible snowboard boots as well. We caught up with Spencer Timkey, part of the family owned and operated core of The Boardroom Snowboard Shop to go over the line. The Boardroom has carried Nike Snowboarding products for the previous four seasons, with each season continuing to outdo the previous line offerings. It’s no secret Nike had a less-than-successful entry into snowboard over ten years ago, with industry purists scoffing at a mainstream brand attempting to enter into a sacred sport. However, after a brief hiatus, Nike roared back stronger than ever. Because of this, Timkey says Nike has become their anchor boot brand. Timkey went on to reveal how the brand has built an incredible professional team of riders, who double not only as the featured faces of the brand, but as the ultimate research and development “scientists.” Whether it’s former Olympic and X-Games halfpipe champion Louie Vito, video and big mountain athletes Haldor Helgasson and Nicolas Muller, or television persona and former X-Games star Danny Kass, Nike has all the bases covered, in terms of the types of riders they all are. At the end of the day, having top-name riders behind your brand is great and all, but it boils down to the product line. The Timkey clan pride themselves with selecting the best of the expansive Nike product line to showcase on their shelves. Part of the process includes heading to regional trade shows and demos, to get a hands-on feel for how the product performs. Owner Mike Timkey even had the incredible opportunity last summer to attend Nike’s home base and development facility in Beaverton, Oregon as a guest of Nike, to get a first-person feel for product development with a trip to Mt. Hood to demo some prototype designs. This dedication to providing the best product for their customers is evident, upon glancing at the selection adorning the walls in their shop. Not only do the walls pop with color and other pleasing aesthetics unique to Nike, there’s technology proprietary to Nike, like using Flywire and Lunarlon, made famous in their running shoes. Spencer was gracious enough to go over the product line, highlighting some of the 11 models carried by The Boardroom, including the Air Kaiju (this writer’s boot of choice), Lunar Endor, Vapen Boa, and the all-new Lunar QS featuring a dazzling illuminated “swoosh” symbol. If it sounds like we’re speaking in foreign tongues, this is all the more reason you need to pop into the shop to see which boot is the one for you. The product, bootfitting, and customer service will leave you knowing you made the right choice with Nike boots, and local shopping. THE BOARDROOM SNOWBOARD SHOP of ELLICOTTVILLE 6113 Route 219, phone 716-699-5620 • click over to www.boardsandpowder.com
As a shop employee, I can tell you just how messed up the ski and snowboard industry buying cycle is. We’re barely through this winter, and we’re already putting orders together for next season. It’s stressful. It’s chaotic. But … it’s awesome. Every year, SIA (SnowSports Industries America) holds a buying show in Atlantic City, which means local buyers get to make the 7-hour trek to Las Vegas’ less-cool younger brother. However, it’s the best opportunity to see next year’s lines in the fullest and to get an idea of which direction you want to go. Most companies are represented, and the convention center is a bustle of activity for the better part of four days. Appointments last anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours, depending on the variety of the line and/or how big the company is. Since the show is only a couple of days, buyers need to see as much product as they can. Kelsey Koebel, who’s worked at the Mountain Shop at Holiday Valley for a couple of years now, went to the AC show for the first time. The experience, she said, was absolutely awesome. “Overall, it was very cool. Seeing how the different companies play at each others’ successes and strengths - that was super interesting. Talk about a whirlwind! It seemed like we got there, I blinked and then we were on our way home.” Every year, companies will drop something cool. This year, Burton Snowboards developed a jacket that can be turned into a backpack. It is innovation like this that keeps the industry moving and progressing - all the while maintaining that level of functionality. “The reps are all so nice,” Koebel said. “Creating those relationships means a lot for a first-time buyer, because they made the experience way easier. They’re not just passing goods off - they actually care about what they’re showing and want you to understand where they’re coming from.” Samantha Timkey, the softgoods buyer at The Boardroom Snowboard Shop (also my sister) is an AC show veteran. The process gets easier over the years, she said. “The drive down is always kind of a hassle, but once you get there it’s just nonstop,” she said. “You’re trying to fit as many appointments in as you can - which is fine, because you want to get a good idea of what you’re buying so you can get home and get orders written.” Samantha saw something very cool dated for release next year, courtesy of GNU Snowboards. It’s called Smart Pickle, and it’s pretty neat. Typically, snowboards are built symmetrically meaning the sidecut is the same on the toe/heel side of the deck. However, it’s easier to get more into your toe turn (because you can put the entire weight of your body over the turn) instead of your heel. So GNU built a board with an asymmetric heel side edge (the sidecut is deeper on the heel, meaning you can get more out of your heel side turn). To continue on that, GNU’s patented MagneTraction technology is less aggressive on the heel side - because you’re making up for it with the deeper sidecut. Get it? The Atlantic City Trade Show is not all fun and games (but it is a lot of fun and games.) The buyers/ reps both bust their humps to get work done, and it’s a process to get orders written and submitted. Buying the right amount of gear - not to mention pinpointing which colors and styles will be hottest over 8 months from now - can be a strenuous process, but it’s one that every local shop buyer lives up to.

LOCAL
BARTENDERS ellicottville
Melissa
Brightman
Ellicottville as you know has a variety of bars and restaurants, but if you’re looking for a cozy, quiet atmosphere to enjoy a dinner that rests on the finer side, The Silver Fox Steakhouse is the spot for you. SNOWED-IN stopped by to check in for this month’s Bartender Spotlight. Here we met Melissa Brightman, a young 23-year-old who hails from Central New Jersey, who’s new to the EVL scene.
Interview By Pat Morgan P. MORGAN: Jersey?! How did you wind up here in Ellicottville of all places? MELISSA: Yes, Central New Jersey (and yes, it’s about 10 minutes from the Jersey Shore haha!) Well some time ago, my best friend moved so I came up to visit here. Just like that, I instantly fell in love with this place, and decided to move here. I’ve been here since June … it’s amazing here! P. MORGAN: So what is it about Ellicottville you like so much? MELISSA: Well where I’m from, summer is the primary season - or industry if you will - so being outdoorsy and all made it easy. I love being outside! I’ve got a dog, so going on hikes, camping, canoeing, kayaking, I love it all! I even like rock climbing - when it’s warmer of course! (laughs). One of my other favorite things has been working here at The Silver Fox and meeting all the new people that visit here. Technically, the locals here are all new people to me as well … I enjoy meeting them all!
P. MORGAN: Ok, but most of us around here are winter people. Do you ski or snowboard? MELISSA: Oh for sure! Skiing is actually my favorite thing about Ellicottville! I ski quite a bit. Mostly at Holiday Valley (my favorite run is Punch Bowl!) and sometimes HoliMont too. P. MORGAN: What’s something wild that’s happened to you since you’ve been here? MELISSA: (laughs) … Oh I’ve got one! So, the second time I was up here visiting, everyone found out I was from New Jersey, and they made everyone at the bar at the time stop what they were doing and do a Jersey Turnpike shot (look it up - it’s great!), which wound up being around 20 people! It was quite the scene! P. MORGAN: Last but not least, it’s time for shout outs. Who’s on your mind? MELISSA: Well of course my boyfriend Dillon, Stephanie Bohn, and I have to mention my amazing boss Mike Nicholson and all the cool coworkers here. It’s been an awesome start to my Ellicottville tenure!
The Silver Fox Steakhouse exists for the single purpose of pleasing its guests. Owner Michael Nickolson has carried on his family tradition to make sure everything is to each visitor’s liking. The next time you’re in town, stop into their location and give a friendly hello to the new girl in town. The Fox can be found tucked away at 23 Hughey Alley. Call in your dining reservation at 716-699-4672.

Kick Off 2014 with Six Thrilling Cleansing Programs From lemon in water every morning to dietary and By Dr. Kristina Barlow, N.D., C.S.T lifestyle changes to major fasts to specific herbal and nutritive detoxification programs … every person I know has enjoyed the benefits of cleansing our tissues from multiple sources of daily toxicity. Contaminated Air, Water and Food. All Processed Food (not really foods). Overeating. Cigarette smoke. Alcohol. Drugs. Medications. Bisphenols from Plastics. GMOs. Occupational or Environmental Toxins. Pollution. You know, just about everything! But, we can only control what is in front of us: water, food, indoor air quality, dealing with addictions and cleansing all year round. Cleansing the body has become a necessity today, and the long-term benefits far outweigh the short-term aggravations. Many dietary changes or cleansing programs cause a shift in the body called a Healing Crisis. This is a good shift and usually only lasts from one to six days. The body is eliminating stored toxins, creating various symptoms such as loose stools, headaches, general malaise, achiness, fatigue, irritability and skin eruptions. It’s a smaller scale detoxification course when compared to quitting alcohol, drugs or tobacco, yet a process that water, whole foods, sleep, exercise, sun, fresh air and time will heal. Although the detoxification foods, products and procedures are endless, I am giving you six herbal and nutritive cleanses to start with … cleanses that have been effective with many clients for healing, overall health and weight loss. With all these cleanses, make sure you are eating whole foods, eliminating processed foods, moving your bowels, getting proper rest, drinking adequate water and maintaining a positive outlook on life. And juice or blend lots of green vegetables!
DR. KRISTINA’S TOP CLEANSE PICKS FOR 2014
SLUGGISH? ... GET MOVING!
Bowel movement rule of thumb: one “smooth” and easy bowel movement for every meal eaten! So, if you eat three meals per day and have one bowel movement per day, then you are constipated. If you strain, then you are constipated. If your stools are dry or come out in balls versus long, narrow pieces, then you are constipated. Constipation causes mental, emotional and physical discomfort and it can be healed with elimination of toxic foods, herbal detoxification programs and increasing the intake of water and fiber. To move the bowels, use the following five products two to three times per day: Magnesium Complex (Mg malate and citrate moves bowels, relaxes muscles, calms nerves and helps sleep), LBS II (Lower Bowel Stimulant cleanses and tones the colon), Liquid Chlorophyll (concentrated green pigment from Alfalfa cleanses all tissues and the blood, alkalizes the body, nourishes the cells), Chlorophyll capsules (cleanses the liver and the intestines) and Nature’s Three Fiber (Apple, Oat and Psyllium fiber powder combined with water bulks and softens the stools).
1ST CLEANSE? START WITH THE BASICS
CleanStart is a simple and gentle beginning detox to cleanse the colon, liver and cells. Especially great for those with food or respiratory allergies and constipation. For 14 days add a cleanse packet (psyllium, bentonite, aloe vera) to water and take four capsules (LBS II and Enviro-Detox) twice per day. For weight loss replace two meals with two shakes per day. Love and Peas (Pea Protein with whole foods and vanilla flavor). Liquid Chlorophyll and Probiotic 11.
BALANCING YOUR YIN & YANG … TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE Tiao He approaches liver, colon and tissue cleansing with Traditional Chinese Medicine herbs. It is great for weight loss, digestion and immunity. It contains Liver Balance TCM, All Cell Detox, LBS II, Psyllium Hulls, Burdock and Black Walnut ATC. Mineral Chi Tonic is a powerful combination of herbs that stimulates metabolism, builds “fire” in the body, stimulates the immune system, provides trace minerals and supports the glandular system. When you come to the store you can take our 10-minute Traditional Chinese Medicine questionnaire, which will reveal a few remedies that will support this cleanse. For example, Nervous Fatigue Formula, Spleen Activator or Breath EZ.
MUFFIN TOP OR DOUGHY? KILL THE YEAST BEAST
This is my favorite cleanse! VERY effective yet intense. Candida albicans resides normally in the body but grows rapidly with the destruction of beneficial bacteria due to antibiotics, stress, processed foods and other medications. Overgrowth of Candida (Candidiasis) eventually causes systemic problems such as weight gain in the middle of the body, bloating, gas, belching, constipation or diarrhea, dry skin, yeast infections, jock itch, fungal nails, athlete’s foot, mood swings, poor sleep and brain fog. Dietary changes: elimination of sugar, all grains, dairy, starchy vegetables, most fruits and alcohol for 14 days. Candida Clear contains enzymes that destroy the yeast’s cell wall with Pau d’arco, Caprylic Acid Combination and Yeast and Fungal Detox, which are direct killers of Candida albicans. Add to this cleanse Liquid Chlorophyll, Probiotic 11, Small Intestine Detox and Bowel Detox.
TRYING TO LOSE WEIGHT? JUMP START THE PROCESS Dieter’s Cleanse is great for cleansing the liver and colon. It works well for constipation and those wanting to nourish the glandular system in order to stimulate metabolism processes. This cleanse contains Bowel Detox, Master Gland Formula (balancing to the hypothalamus), Enviro-Detox, Liver Cleanse Formula, LBS II (Lowe Bowel Stimulant), Chromium GTF (balancing to blood sugar levels) and SF (stimulates metabolism). Add to this cleanse Fat Grabbers (guar gum, psyllium, chickweed and lecithin combination for high LDLs and fat cravings) or Carbo Grabbers (White Kidney Bean and Chromium combination for high blood sugar levels and high triglycerides) or Sweet Fx (Chromium, l-arabinose, l-theanine and cinnamon bark combination for sugar cravings - blocks the absorption of sugar). Also add Liquid Chlorophyll and Probiotic 11.
GOT BUGS? DE-WORM YOURSELF
Many people don’t want to know or deal with the fact that 90% of our population has parasites at least once in their life. Parasites will cause chronic digestive problems, bowel problems, pain, inflammation, appetite changes, anal itching, skin disorders, brain fog, mood changes and much more. Para Cleanse is taken twice per day for 10 days and contains Herbal Pumpkin, Black Walnut ATC, Artemisia Combination and Paw Paw Cell-Reg. The bowels HAVE to be moving very well every day while on this cleanse! Add Ionic Minerals (trace minerals often deficient with parasite infestations). After 10 days, break for 5 days, then repeat this cycle three times, necessary to destroy the eggs of the parasites. During the 5 days break, add Bentonite Clay and Artemisia Combination.

Gary Allan: ‘Set You Free’ Country Singer/Songwriter Coming to SENECA ALLEGANY CASINO
A Conversation with Gary Allan HULICK: A lot of great things happened for you in 2013. You sold out 2 shows at the Ryman Auditorium, your album “Set You Free” was named the #1 album by multiple publications and named in the Top 10 albums of 2013 by Entertainment Weekly and USA Today, as well as debuting at #1 on the Billboard Country Albums Chart. This album has truly been a healing process for you and has led you to “self acceptance.” Would you go as far as saying this piece of work saved your life? ALLAN: There were a lot of changes happening at my label while I was making “Set You Free,” and it gave me more time to write and work on it at my own pace. It was literally like being set free creatively and I think that is apparent in the album. I am proud of the album and everything that it has accomplished.
.............................. Saturday, Mar. 29 @ 7pm | Seneca Allegany Casino By Melanie Hulick Country singer-songwriter, Gary Allan, will be making a stop at the Seneca Allegany Casino Events Center in Salamanca, NY on March 29 with a sense of complete renewal. For Allan, the past 17 years of his career has led him to what he feels is his most personal and evolved work yet with his latest album titled, “Set You Free.” “This album has allowed me to progress lyrically through all I’ve been through personally and physically,” said Allan when I caught up with him recently. “This is the first album I’ve done since I had a polyp removed from my vocal cords that had been causing me problems with my voice and my stamina. After it was removed, I felt like I was 18 again!” Allan was born and raised in Southern California, where he played clubs during his high school years. After graduation the singer started gaining a following, which included two opposite groups of people - western boot wearing rednecks and the spiked hair, piercing laden neo-Goths. If you can’t quite picture that in your head, let me clear it up for you. Allan’s inspiration in music came from the Highwaymen … Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson. The perfect blend of good old boys living the dangerous life. Allan describes how he felt when he went to one of their concerts as being like punk rock to him. “It was so hardcore and I really, really wanted to be a part of that lifestyle.” Seventeen years later, the singer went about recording his most recent album differently by bringing in new female songwriters which he has never done before, and took on the responsibility and challenge of producing his own tracks as well as playing his own lead guitar, which he says gave him a new sense of freedom that he never felt on any of his earlier works. Having released 9 previous albums with seven going Gold, Allan proclaims that “Set You Free” has given him his current sense of renewal. “It’s all about healing … it’s all about the evolution of getting better. I seem to gravitate musically toward wherever I’m at in my life at that time … and I’m in a real good place.”
HULICK: In this world of technology, the new “norm” seems to be overnight sensations without paying their dues, so to speak. Do you feel like the lifetime type of careers have gone by the way side and careers by the moment have become the “norm”? ALLAN: I was brought up playing in bars and clubs and cutting my teeth on traditional country music. That is the stuff my Dad was playing at home every night and it is what I knew by heart. I started playing in a band with my Dad and my brother when I was just a kid. That is the only way I knew how to make it and I wouldn’t trade those experiences. Those things made me the artist I am today and I am proud of that. HULICK: What is the best advice someone gave you along the way that you took? ALLAN: My Dad told me to learn to play for the people who love you, the people who hate you and the people who care less, and then you will find your own voice and develop your own style. HULICK: Have you ever played this area before? ALLAN: We played in Salamanca the week after Hurricane Sandy hit. It was actually the same venue we are playing this time around. HULICK: Seneca Allegany Casino is very close to the beautiful ski village Ellicottville. Do you ski? ALLAN: It’s been a long time since I’ve skied and I don’t think we’ll have time on this trip. I did have knee surgery back in the summer, so I’m sure my doctor is glad I won’t have time to hit the slopes anytime soon. HULICK: What is your favorite song to do live, either from your newest album or any of your other works? ALLAN: It changes quite often, but right now I really like “Bones.” It has some really rocking guitar licks and it is a great song to play live. HULICK: Well we are very excited you are heading this way in March. This will be my first time seeing your show. What can I expect? ALLAN: I make music to play it live, so you can expect to come and have a great time. It will be a fun night for sure.
