By Pat Morgan Good news everyone - it’s finally THAT time of year again ... one of the most exciting seasons here in Ellicottville, NY. The chill is back in the air, the leaves have created their annual colorful hillside inferno, and people are popping in to their favorite specialty shops to pick up the latest and greatest in winter gear and accessories. We’d be remiss if we didn’t also mention some of the more popular festivals in the area, including EVL’s Fall Festival, and the ever popular Holiday Valley Beer & Wine Festival, happening Nov. 7-8 this year. If you’ve never attended or heard of this incredible event, allow us to ‘pour on’ the details ... Part one of the weekend consists of the annual ‘Brew Master’s Dinner’ taking place Friday, Nov. 7 at 6pm inside the Holiday Valley (Main) Lodge. This event has gained significant popularity over the years, with intricate menu items and unique beer presentations that are certain to impress even the most savvy sipper. Centerplate at Holiday Valley General Manager Franco Brady revealed a bit of what is to come with this year’s dinner, including unbelievable flavor combinations of nationally recognized craft beer with carefully selected, seasonal, locally sourced food items. The most important part: all of these unique cuisine items will include one common ingredient - beer! Adding to the entertainment of the evening will be a rather ‘unusual’ master of ceremonies, with the evening bearing a striking resemblance to the wildly popular carnival theme some of you may have experienced at this year’s Summer Festival of the Arts. Of course, the event will also serve as an informal and intimate Brew Master meet & greet, where you’re encouraged to discuss the craft & pairing decisions with the brew masters themselves. Hors d’oeuvres will begin at 6pm along with a tapping of the kolsch, with dinner service to begin at 7pm. Tickets for this intimate event come in at $65 and can be purchased online at holidayvalley.com, in person at Holiday Valley or at the Ellicottville Brewing Company. If you’re more interested in the liquid portion of the weekend, the following day (Saturday, Nov. 8) is definitely the ‘can’t miss’ portion of the weekend. Sponsored by Holiday Valley, Ellicottville Brewing Company, and Southern Tier Brewing Company, what once was a relatively quaint event has now grown into one of the hottest tickets in town, with 2100 attendees and approximately 30 craft brewers and vintners from all over the country. To rattle off some of the incredible breweries attending this season: Sierra Nevada, Magic Hat, Great Lakes, Erie Brewing, Saranac, Southern Tier, Ellicottville Brewing, John Harvard’s, Ithaca, Rohrbach, Woodchuck, CB Craft Brewers, Butternuts, Original Sin Cider, Harpoon, Voodoo, Smutty Nose, Long Trail, Hebrew and Otter Creek. With a list as dynamic as this, one is certain to find something new to tantalize their tastebuds. If you prefer grapes over barley, don’t fret - there are also several of the finest wineries in New York State attending as well. Local favorites Winery of EVL, Merritt Estate Winery, Niagara Winery, Willow Creek Winery, Glenora Wine Cellars, Vendiff Vineyard, Victoriaberg Vineyard, Casa Larga Vineyards, Montezuma Winery and Heron Hill Winery will all have some of their finest pours on-hand, perfect to assist you in your next pairing. As if all of these great selections weren’t enough, the ever popular ‘Big Leg Emma’ will once again help keep the crowd on their feet. It all kicks off at 3:30pm, with the event wrapping up at 7:30pm. There is complimentary shuttle service throughout Holiday Valley’s lodging properties, as well as into the village, so don’t even THINK of trying to drive after a few Pantius Droppus’! Now here’s the important part - this event WILL (I repeat WILL) sell out, so do NOT delay getting your tickets. You don’t want to be the guy scrambling the week of, do you? Tickets are currently available at holidayvalley.com, Consumer’s Beverage, Wegman’s, and of course at Ellicotville Brewing Company and Holiday Valley Resort. Tickets for the Beer and Wine Festival are $50 until Nov. 1, at which point they will rise to $60, if there are even any left. Don’t forget, you can also make a weekend out of it by inquiring about some of the great lodging packages available at Holiday Valley, 716-699-2345.

ON-HILL EXCITEMENT
Before we get started, let’s take this opportunity to congratulate HV on its 2014-’15 SKI Magazine resort ranking - 5th in the East. Fifth! Sitting only behind Mont Tremblant, Smuggler’s Notch, Stowe and Killington, the overall experience is what prompted readers to award The Valley it’s back-to-back Top-5 ranking.
In an effort to bring in fresh faces to the resort, HV has lowered the cost of its learn-to-ski/ snowboard packages. Not many people understand why skiing/riding is so big - why would you want to be outside in the cold for hours on end? - until you start doing it, only then does it click.
“It’s amazing. We’re the only resort under 1000’ in the Top-10, ever,” said Jane Eshbaugh, Holiday Valley’s Director of Marketing. “It shows that people are looking for the whole experience. Really good skiing, facilities, fun people, and the village ... it really is the whole package.”
“If you stay at The Inn midweek this year, you’ll get a free learn-to-ski/snowboard package,” Eshbaugh said. “If you stay for multiple nights, you’ll get a couple. We’re trying to get the word out to the people that ski that we want them to bring people that don’t ski. If we do it one at a time, we’ll have more skiers and snowboarders before we know it.”
To be in the company of these resorts - which are prestigious and well-respected - is a testament to everything that Holiday Valley does right.
Speaking of getting more people to the resort, last year HV brought in Burton’s Riglet Park, a place for youngsters to learn park without beating themselves up too badly. And of course to compliment the Burton Riglet Park, Holiday Valley brought in Burton-specific rental gear (giving park users legitimate decks to learn on, which is totally awesome).
“We’re fortunate to have such a great population base,” Eshbaugh said. “We’ve got places like Buffalo, Toronto, Rochester, Cleveland, Columbus ... the list goes on and on. And every year, these people make the trek to come stay with us.” One of the biggest improvements made over the summer is the return of the iconic Clocktower. A place for people to meet, hang out and wait for friends or simply check the time, the public reaction to the original Clocktower’s disappearance caused a minor uproar amongst the resort’s guests. “When we built this lodge (the new Main), it changed the elevations out front,” Eshbaugh said. If we had left the old Clocktower, it would have looked tiny. We wanted to wait and see how circulation worked before we put a new one in.” Coming down the stairs (by the Customer Service building) guests will be greeted by the new and improved Clocktower. Contractor Dana John and his crew did an excellent job. If you’re a regular at Holiday Valley, you’ll know that on busy weekends certain trails tend to get a bit … congested. Management and the Mountain Crew realized this, which is why they’ve cut a couple of new trails. “We’ve got 58 trails that we ‘count’,” Eshbaugh said. “In reality, there are way more. Connections, ways to get around, etc. The one that goes from Sunrise to Bear Cub is a shortcut. When you’re going towards Tannenbaum from the top of Morning Star, most guests would go down Candy Cane and across. If you’re a beginner, we want to give you tons of space - so there’s another trail cut almost parallel to Candy Cane.” A new ‘trail’ Eshbaugh wanted to highlight was the one that gives guests an easy way to get from the top of Sunrise to School Haus. If you’re staying at The Inn and you’re a beginner, sometimes it gets a bit tricky getting to School Haus. This should alleviate that. Sometimes, improvements aren’t necessarily visual. A couple of years ago, Holiday Valley started to bring in HDK automated snowmaking guns, which use on-hill weather centers so the snow being made can be tweaked for humidity and temperature. This year, the resort added 54 new automated guns.
“For the people that experienced it, it was great,” Eshbaugh said. “It allowed us to get kids started snowboarding a lot younger because of the reel,” (which is attached to the front of the board so parents/instructors can pull the youngsters on their boards). “They make terrain-based learning for adults as well, and the resort will be moving in that direction rather soon.” New Terrain Park Coordinator Mike Nenno - a longtime HV employee - and his crew have already started getting the parks in order. The parks this year will be built and geared more towards the people that are riding them. Foxfire will maintain its role as main park, while the jumps won’t be as big and the terrain will flow better. Moonshadow will stay home to the boardercross course, which is a perennial favorite for skiers and snowboarders alike. Quick notes: HV’s Mountain Coaster will be open Thursdays-Sundays (and holidays), while the annual Demo Day is scheduled for Dec. 20 - the Saturday before Christmas. (Not familiar with the Mountain Coaster? Google it. It’s fun. It’s fast. And yes, it operates in the winter!)
HOLIDAY VALLEY’S “OTHER” HILL Approximately 3 miles from the resort lies the Tubing Park, which is a really neat way to spend some time together when you’re not on the hill, but you want to be “on the hill”. “Last year, we created a new groomer that allowed us to make narrower lanes,” Eshbaugh said. “Now, there are 22 lanes instead of 12. We also brought in a cannon gun for the park, which makes snowmaking much easier for the crew there.” The Tubing Park hosts a skating rink, a junior hill, fire pits and tons of other really cool stuff for you and the family (or friends!) to do. More info can be found at holidayvalley.com/tubing. Holiday Valley has come a long way since its inception in 1958. The people are what make HV what it is - not just the visitors, but the liftees, the people making your food, making your snow. Ranking 5th is a testament to everyone involved in what makes the resort what it is. We’re very lucky to have Holiday Valley. And remember, every day, we are #OneDayCloser.

The 2014-’15 Season is Quickly Approaching PREPARE TO ADD SOME HOLIMONT TO YOUR LIFE HoliMont’s Weekday Experience Pass offers 10 non-transferrable lift tickets and 5 snowsports clinics for as little as $215. Since the weekday traffic is considerably less than the weekend traffic, at times it is almost as if you have the slopes to yourself.
By Dash Hegeman The leaves on the trees surrounding Ellicottville are quickly morphing into a bright orange hue, which can mean only one thing: the winter season will be here before you know it. Are you already picking out what new gear you want to purchase for the season? Did you know the answer to that question months ago? If so, then you must be ready for another fine season on the slopes. And what better place to break in your new gear than at HoliMont? If you’re not a Member at HoliMont, it is an experience that can be tough to put into words because it really is just that - a fantastic winter experience. Picture setting your skis on edge and engaging your finely tuned, high performance skis or snowboard into pristinely groomed corduroy and ripping down one of HoliMont’s 52 slopes. Picturing it really doesn’t do it justice though. Until you can actually feel that crisp Western New York winter air on your face as you cruise down a slope, all you can really do is imagine what spending your winters at this family-friendly ski club is all about. Just outside the quaint village of Ellicottville, NY, HoliMont Ski Area has a slightly different mantra than many ski areas you might be familiar with. HoliMont, you see, is a private ski club with a membership base that is very passionate about their little slice of skiing bliss. Rest assured, this is not your grandfather’s country club. People choose to become members at HoliMont due to its family-friendly atmosphere just as much as they do for its pristinely groomed terrain and snowmaking abilities. With a strong emphasis on children-focused ski school and racing programs that teach young members proper skiing/ snowboarding techniques, and most importantly - lots of fun, the HoliMont experience is one that can be enjoyed by all age groups. Experience HoliMont is more than just a marketing tagline. Think of it as a lifestyle suggestion or a word to the wise, if you will. Check out www.holimont.com and follow the club on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, where you will find a continuous stream of content and action packed photos. But the social media experience won’t give you anywhere close to the true feeling of being at the club on a Saturday morning in February after Ellicottville has just gotten pounded with glorious lake effect snow and the HoliMont Mountain Crew has been hard at work all night long, grooming the slopes to their
maximum excitement capabilities. On those days you will find out exactly what the edges on your skis are made for or how floating through the glades on a snowboard is as thrilling as any feature in the terrain park. It’s the little intricacies that truly make HoliMont a special place. This club was founded on family values, hard work and a deep-rooted love of skiing. So while the club has definitely evolved over the years, the one thing that has never changed is that it offers a one-of-a-kind family atmosphere. HoliMont still has original members (the club was founded in 1962) who are still active in the club. Those people can tell you stories about hiking the hills in the off-season in order to remove any large rocks that could possibly cause damage to skis. Or they can spin tales about how the main chalet once doubled as a garage for the first snow groomer purchased by the club. Perhaps you’ll hear about how the chairlifts used to have numbers (i.e. One, Two, Three) for names instead of being called Exhibition Express or Greer. After all the stories are said and done, what you will really find out is that becoming a member at HoliMont is about more than involvement in a club; it basically becomes a home away from home and a vacation that you can enjoy all winter long.
OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
Membership not for you? Not to worry because HoliMont still has something for you! Years ago the HoliMont membership decided to open HoliMont to the general public every Monday through Friday (except for the week between Christmas and New Year’s). This change allowed any snowsports enthusiast to experience this special private ski club during its off-peak times. It’s not uncommon for people to use their vacation days (or sick days if you feel that “cold” coming on the morning after a powder dump) to take advantage of HoliMont’s Weekday Experience Pass (10 non-transferrable lift tickets and 5 snowsports clinics for as little as $215). Since the weekday traffic is considerably less than the weekend traffic, at times it is almost as if you have the slopes to yourself. If you’ve been to HoliMont, then you probably have an idea of what the HoliMont experience is all about because it really is something that you have to take in first-hand. If that’s the case, then HoliMont looks forward to seeing you back this season. But if you have yet to give this quaint ski area a try, put it on your “to do” list. More likely than not, you’ll be glad you did.
Find HoliMont online at www.holimont.com • Search HoliMont on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
Page A-10 ... SNOWED-IN ~ 2014-’15 SKI SHOW EDITION
If you’re reading this, then it must mean that winter is right around the corner. And at HoliMont we couldn’t be happier about that. We’ve spent the entire off-season diligently working to do our part in making the 2014-’15 ski season one that you will never forget. Between the work being done over at WestMont Ridge (where we now have roads) to updating snowmaking air and water lines, to completely remodeling four bathrooms in the main chalet, to adding a deck on to the warming hut at the top of Cascade and Greer, this has been an off-season filled with a tremendous amount of work. Our hope is that all of that hard work will help you have a fantastic season out on the slopes.
WESTMONT ROADWAYS
One huge accomplishment this past summer was the installation of the access road that will serve people who purchase lots or condos at WestMont Ridge. Despite multiple flash-floods over the summer, the roads were installed and now provide a great perspective on the overall layout of the WestMont project.
WESTMONT RIDGE
If you’ve been following the progress, you know that when it is all said and done, we will be adding a new slope on the far west side of HoliMont, which will serve as the new terrain park. Over the course of the summer, the new slope was cut so that natural gas lines could be installed.

Standing atop the newly cut slope at WestMont Ridge provides a spectacular view. The new slope won’t be ready for action this coming season unfortunately, so for now, check out the view and dream of all the future terrain park thrills that will be had!
The Mountain Crew and the Buildings & Grounds Crew had a busy summer out on the slopes. The Pump House near Plum Creek got a significant upgrade (pictured at left), as did some of the snowmaking air and water lines (pictured below), all of which should make for even better snowmaking for the new season.

THE NEW DECK
The added space at Foxwood will no doubt allow for some really fun times on those bluebird days that we all love so much. Picture yourself spending the morning lapping Greer, your legs are in need of a little rest, and right there in front of you is this amazing deck where you can put your feet up and hopefully take in a little sun!
FOXWOOD
The Buildings & Grounds Crew started off the summer with a goal of adding a deck to the Foxwood warming hut and before we knew it, they had accomplished that goal and were on to the next project.
BATHROOM REMODELING
Last season, the main men’s and women’s bathrooms went through a very nice upgrade, and over the course of this summer, the four smaller bathrooms went through a similar remodel. This photo was taken midway through the project. They are now all completed and look excellent.
CASCADE
Every off-season a lift at HoliMont gets selected for a facelift. Eventually, all lifts will have a similar look as Exhibition Express has. This past summer it was Cascade that was chosen for the upgrade, which means that now the Exhibition Express, Cascade, and Meadow lift houses all reflect one another. For over 50 years, families and snowsports enthusiasts from miles around have converged on HoliMont, North America’s largest private ski area devoted to family skiing adventures. Generations of members have been drawn in by the amazing skiing, only to fall in love with the warm, community atmosphere that makes HoliMont the kind of place you never want to leave. During the week, HoliMont is happy to welcome the public and groups. Our eight lifts service over 50 slopes and trails. Head to www.holimont.com.

What’s cool in the shop this season? (besides the crew) The City Garage is turning 15! Each fall festival marks another year, and this year is a big one. Over the spring/summer we freshened up the inside of the shop - fully refinished hardwood floors and fresh paint. We’ve also added a few new apparel brands for the winter, Trew Gear and Saga. Trew features clean lines and super tech fabrics to work with the elements we have in WNY and beyond. The Saga brand offers a younger/edgier look with bold colors and brighter color swatches and patterns. You definitely won’t blend in with the crowd with Saga.
Your specialties ... GO. This is our 30th year in business - we’ve come a long way since Barnyard Ski Rental in ’84 (interviewee’s note: I had not been born yet). Iron Mike and Jodie (my mom and dad) have constantly innovated the store to keep up with the ever-evolving snowboard/ snowsports market. There’s a full-service shop in the back (tune-ups, quick fixes, etc.), a huge rental fleet (including high-performance ski and snowboard options), tons of parking and the only off-site location to buy Holiday Valley lift tickets. This season I’ve developed a digital catalogue for our website and expanded our social media into Snapchat. The digital catalogue has one purpose - if you’re living in Ontario or Michigan or Pennsylvania, etc. and can’t get to us, I want to be able to give you that in-store experience via FaceTime, Skype or a phone call.
Your boot fitter has quite the reputation. How good is he, really? Tim “The Boot Man” Cummisky has been in the game for quite some time. He has built up the CG boot/boot fitting business so much we had to build him his own boot fitting room! From stance alignment, custom footbeds, down to a simple stretch of a sixth toe, Tim can do it all. His experience of knowing how to translate a customer’s boot discomfort to a, usually simple, solution makes for a quick turn-around back out to the snow. Other services you offer … We are a full service ski shop, offering sales, demos, and service. We have a fully stocked state-of-the-art service shop equipped with Wintersteiger ski tuning machines. We also offer cross country, snowshoe, and telemark ski/boot rentals. We have a well stocked alpine ski demo quiver as well. What accessory do you carry that you would recommend every skier add to their gear bag? How about starting with a new gear bag!? Transpack, the leader in the ski/boot travel bags, has added an all-new heated gear bag ($189.99). There’s nothing better that pulling your ski boots out of a 120* degree boot bag! It can be plugged in at home or in the car. It’s a great way to dry out soggy gloves, socks, and even keep your chili warm! Any details yet on a pre-season movie premier event? Once again, The City Garage will be bringing the winter stoke to Ellicottville! Saturday, Nov. 22, 2014 at The Ellicottville Depot. This year will feature Matchstick Productions “Days of Our Youth,” a ski film dedicated to the spirit of being a kid again. Check our FB page for details on time, sponsors and prizes! What other events are the crew looking forward to participating in this year? The two annual events are the Moonlight Snowshoe Tour at Griffis Sculpture Park, and Telestock, “A day of love, peace, and telemark skiing” at Holiday Valley’s Yodeler Lodge - both are in February. On the flip-side, the C.G. offers one of the coolest, most unique palettes of retail from a ski shop during the off-season. Can you enlighten us on some of your summer lines? We have been open every summer since day one. And through the years have tried a lot of different genres of summer themed activities. We try to carry over the unique clothing and equipment that are featured in the winter season to the summer. Stylish clothing from many popular brands that have a bit of technical merit. Functional footwear for the hiker, trail runner, and even the beer drinker! Stand Up Paddleboarding has also been making a big splash on the waters of WNY. We carry BIC Sport paddleboards with a few of their most popular models for the beginner, families, and seasoned enthusiast. The newest category this past summer was fun camping supplies. Anywhere from cast iron grilling to super lightweight/packable cook sets. We also featured GSI Outdoors and Rome Industries, something for everyone having fun outdoors!
You’ve got a couple brands being added to the shop’s line-up this season, including Burton and Arbor Snowboards. Indulge … After a brief hiatus, we are SO excited to have Burton Snowboards back in the shop. They put a ton of time, effort and money into perpetually being the industry’s leader in hardgoods, softgoods and brand recognition. Arbor is a newcomer for us. Our rep, Timmy McKenzie, is one of the raddest dudes alive. Arbor Snowboards ride well and are very aesthetically appealing. It adds an entirely new dynamic to our snowboard selection. Can you name of a few of the existing brands you carry, and more specifically a couple products by those brands that you’re super stoked about? Lib Tech, Gnu and Roxy (Mervin Manufacturing) are our flagship snowboard brands, and for good reason. They are hand-built in the USA, have the world’s best snowboarder on their team (Travis Rice) and changed the snowboard industry forever with their patented Banana and Magne Traction technology. More specifically, this year they introduced the Travis Rice Goldmember, which is built with Firepower technology (it weighs about 5 lbs.). Nike and Salomon continue to bring the heat with the bestfitting boots in the industry, many built with Boa Technology. Samantha (my sis, and our softgoods buyer) is really excited about all of the clothing we’ve brought in, including Dry.Q Elite from Mountain Hardwear - super innovative insulation and waterproofing. An ample Gore-Tex selection (across all brands) between jackets, pants and gloves will keep you dry in any condition. And we’re amped on our ladies snowboard selection. Jamie Anderson won gold in Sochi on the Gnu Ladies’ Choice (we’ve got it) and boots from Salomon and Nike couple fashion with function. What’s exciting and new with the Oakley Goggle Bar? The Goggle Bar is firing on all cylinders for the season. We’ve really expanded our goggle selection - Oakley, Smith, Giro, Salomon and Anon - bringing you unparalleled vision on the hill. First, from Oakley, the PRIZM lens. It takes vision to an entirely new level (I used them last year at the on-snow demo at Stratton, and it’s the best lens I’ve ever looked through.) They’ve got a new goggle coming out called the Flight Deck (frameless). We’re focusing on quick-change lens tech, and we’ve got the industry’s very best (Oakley, Smith and Anon). We’ll also be getting AirWaves and Recons (the Oakley/Smith goggles with Recon Head’s Up Display) which, this year, lets you link your GoPro Camera (also available at The Boardroom) to the HUD in the goggle. Yeah. It’s pretty awesome. You’re also introducing seasonal snowboard rentals for kids this year. Props for embracing the young ones. Can you give us some details? (set-ups, sizes) Bringing in Burton (whose junior program is awesome) has allowed us to revisit our seasonal snowboard rental program. We’ve got really limited supplies, so if you want to get your young shredder on some stuff, we recommend getting in here! It’s all brand-new gear, and we’re running stuff for both little dudes and girls.

Rossignol, Dynastar, Head, Nordica, Blizzard, Volkl, Elan, Fischer, Burton, DC, Ride, K2, Rossignol … that’s just the beginning. Come into the store and see!
How long has Dekdebruns been in business? Where did it all start? My grandfather, Al Dekdebrun, was a professional quarterback during the 1940s. After he finished playing, he and my grandmother, Corky, opened their first Al Dekdebrun Sporting Goods store in Buffalo in 1946. They opened their first shop in Ellicottville at Holiday Valley in 1961. The expansion to Ellicottville was a way for my grandmother to focus on her love of skiing. In 1962, the store moved into town in the basement of the Ellicottville Inn. Since then, we have always had a presence on Washington Street. My father, Greg, loves to tell the story that when he was young, his mother would put him on the bus from Buffalo to Ellicottville where he would work in the shop Friday night. The manager would then lock him in the store, where he would sleep on the boot bench so that he could ski in the morning at Holiday Valley. He would return to work that night and repeat the process until his mother would come down on Sunday to ski with him and take him back to Buffalo for school the next week. These early experiences led to his interest in the family business. In 1986, he and my mother, Patti, purchased the ski shop from my grandparents and have been running it since.
MSG offers a diverse line of hardgoods for both skiers and snowboarders. Can you get us caught up with some of the top picks for this season? We have a lot of good stuff this year. Lucky for us, twelve skis that we currently have in stock were named in SKI Magazine as this year’s “Top Buys” ... with prices that won’t make you gag! And five of the ladies skis we carry were also recognized. Our picks would be the Rossignol Experience 88, which was our best selling ski last season. The addition of basalt to stiffen the ski and the patented air tip to lighten the ski will prove to be another homerun for Rossignol. The Blizzard Black Pearl, with a lightweight core and sturdy sidewalls, is a hands-down winner for women. In snowboards, Ride has a new board shape called the “Helix” which uses an asymmetrical design. The heel side edge has a shorter turning radius than the toe side, giving you the most out of your turns. We’re focusing on the junior market as well, calling out the pint size Burton “After School Special” with pre-mounted bindings. Just plug your kid in and go with a setup that’s easier than a tricycle with training wheels!
Your location on Ellicottville’s main drag boasts three floors of merchandise. What do you fill it all with? LOTS! We’ve finished the final stages of our store redesign that we began last year. Now we are able to offer a full service, custom fitting hard goods suite on our top floor. We have a new boot fitting bench to ensure that our ski and snowboard boots are the best fitting boots that you have ever had. We have all of our ski and snowboard equipment located on the top floor so that families can all shop together and take advantage of our knowledgeable staff, all in one place! Our basement offers the best service for all of our seasonal lease, daily rental and tuning needs for our families. Our service suite is able to restore your equipment back to its original glory with our state-of-the-art Wintersteiger array of tuning machines operated by factory trained technicians. On our main floor, we have all of our clothing and accessories. We have even more room now on our main floor because of the recent changes to the hardgoods areas. Come check out our expanded offerings of clothing brands and accessories! Can you give us your top product picks for this season? We are all excited for Atomic! They have introduced a new line of outerwear featured exclusively at Dekdebruns. Atomic has combined bold European colors with the lightest technical fabrics, creating a look that is entirely unique. They also introduced Memory Fit in the new Hawx 2.0 series in ski boots for the ultimate in fit and comfort. Tell us about your TekScan machine and the custom footbeds you offer … We developed a custom boot fitting system that involves a whole body approach. The first step begins with our Footbalance Custom Insoles; this computerized system analyzes foot shape and movement. It guides us in building the perfect custom insole for skiing/riding. We also stock insoles for other sports, such as running and walking, or just your everyday casual shoe. The second step involves one of our “boot doctors” assisting a customer in picking out the best boot for their needs based on many factors, including foot shape, ability, budget, etc. After a boot is picked out and heat molded, we use our TekScan machine to create the proper body alignment with the boot and the ski. Our machine can guide us with a visual weight distribution picture. We can then make adjustments to the boot to ensure that the ski is properly weighted when the customer is in their boots. Everyone is welcome to stop in for a demo - we have even added two big screen TVs for easier viewing of our boot fitting technologies.
Same question, soft goods … We like to think of the outerwear selection at Mud as being thorough, functional and diverse as it needs to appeal to the most discerning customer. For men, we offer everything from technical, waterproof shell pieces to insulated pieces that are purpose built for typical resort use. For women, looking sleek and polished go hand-in-hand. We offer flattering, tailored, yet technical designs with bold tones and attention-getting prints. Who doesn’t love a puffy coat? Whether you wear it as an insulating layer to a football game or when walking the dog, our selection of puffys will keep you warm. You’re more than just a ski/snowboard shop. What other goodies do you carry? We carry a fun and trendy selection of lifestyle wear. Sweaters, wraps, casual jackets, shirts and tops, dresses, skirts, tights, hats, scarves, handmade purses and sporty bags, etc. - perfect après wear. New this year: we’re excited about our selection of tall leather boots, casual footwear and cozy slippers (mandatory for cold winter mornings!). You’ll also find things like portable speakers and headphones, hydration packs, logo wear and Ellicottville branded t-shirts, hoodies, hats and water bottles. Let’s talk about the Speed Factory. Word has it MSG just unleashed a new tool in the back shop that brings the art of hot wax to a whole new level. The MSG “Speed Factory” is home to the most innovative tuning machinery from Montana of Switzerland. In order to compliment the existing machinery, we added a new tool called the “Wax Future”. This machine uses an infrared heat source to heat the base of the ski. This provides better and deeper wax penetration into the base of the ski, for longer and better gliding on the snow. If you find yourself frustrated by catching edges, have no bite on hard snow, see damage on your base or you neglected your equipment over the summer, it’s time for a proper tune-up at the Speed Factory. Your fleet of ski/board rentals is extraordinary, giving customers the opportunity to “try before they buy.” Can you give us a glimpse into the selection available? Do you offer seasonal equipment leasing? It can be challenging to choose the right equipment that suits your level and style preference. We demo almost all of the high-end skis on our wall and usually in more than one size. With a greater variety to choose from, the better the chance our customers will find the proper ski. Our seasonal leasing program is very popular. It’s an affordable way to outfit kids who are new to skiing and snowboarding and for kids who are growing like weeds. We offer both new and used ski and snowboard equipment.

Since coming onto the scene just a few years ago, Homewood has continued to gain momentum in the snowboard manufacturing world. Can you give us a quick recap of the company? At the beginning of 2011, we purchased a bunch of old and rusty equipment from another snowboard manufacturer out of Vermont. We brought it all to Bradford, PA and spent the first year refurbishing the machines and learning the art of crafting boards. It was shaky at first, but over the next couple of years we worked out all of the kinks and really nailed down the board building process.
What’s hot this season at Phatman? Our good wood awarded selection of snowboards, award winning Capita’s camber line-up, Thirty-Two Boots, Jones “Aviator.”
What’s new with the deck builds this season? We did a few new things for this season. We have a new twin, blunt tip, positive camber (Nuggets), a twin, blunt tip, flat camber with basalt fiber (3 Chord), a new directional speedster (Foundation) and a twin, blended camber, blunt tip women’s board (Holley). Another new thing that we’re doing this season is offering custom decks. You have the opportunity to choose the shape, size, camber, flex, fiber and carbon. Then you can either design your own artwork or work together with a Homewood artist to create a one-of-a-kind deck. Can you give us a visual of the graphics being applied to this year’s lineup? Who are the artists? You can check out the new models on the website and also get some more info on their specs and such. We worked with a couple different artists for the 20142015 line. Drew Thorla designed the 3 Chord, Foundation, and Holley. He’s also done various models in the past such as the Shining Cat, Sundays Best, Extra Chi’s, Randy, etc. Dean Liebau and Clint Kline did the SOS. Dean also does the art for the JSP decks that we press. And I did the Nuggets by simply ripping off the Misfits. I hope Danzig never sees this deck. Nuggets has become quite the icon within your brand. What makes this furry feline so special? Man, I don’t even know where to start. Chicken Nuggets is a strange ranger. You could definitely say he’s special. He was living under the factory (in his lair) a couple years ago so we brought him in. He’s the only cat that I know who speaks English, falls off the desk 3 times a day and never once lands on his feet, is a vegetarian but also a pretty good hunter, only drinks rusty water from the press, and has his own pro model. Shout-out to your team riders ... The current roster for this season is Trevor Eichelberger, Bryden Bowley, Austin Schied, Hayley Paronish, Jack Cornell, Elin Tortorice, Adam Stromwall, Leon Townsend, Madison Goodman, and Dale Mortensen. You can check out the “Crew” page on our site to watch videos, read their bios, etc. Good dudes and dudettes. Any big travel plans for this season for the company? You’re asking about the future? Uhh...umm... I don’t get it. What keeps you busy during the off-season? Bikes, kayaks, skateboards, tacos, rock n roll, camping, hiking, pizza, swimming, headaches, cheap booze, road trips, and so on.
You’re a snow/skate shop ... can you give us a quick rundown of the skate brands you carry? We carry a wide variety of skateboard brands including Baker, Welcome, Zoo York, Sk8Mafia, Girl, Chocolate, Krooked, DeathWish, Flip, Creature, AntiHero, SantaCruz and so many more niche brands! We carry a wide selection of Independent Trucks as well as Thunder, Krux, Royal, Venture, Ace and wheels including Spitfire, Ricta, OJ’s, Bones and more! So much skate product filtering through our shop and only the best! Other “must-mention” items in-store ... Ninja Suits, Nike SB, VANS, JSLV(JusLiv), Sunset Wheels, Oh yeah I need to mention our new in store 10’ x 20’ Mini Ramp! Phatman has been a strong backer of the Alix Rice Peace Park Foundation. For our readers who aren’t familiar, can you explain the foundation and the motivation behind it? The foundation is dedicated to creating a memorial concrete skatepark at the Northtown Recreation Center in Amherst NY in honor of Alix Rice, a young longboarder who was struck and killed by a drunk driver. Are there any Alix Rice fundraisers coming up? ARPF is offering a pair of pre-season Buffalo Sabres tickets and an Alix Rice t-shirt for a $20 donation. If you’re interested in making a donation call our shop or go to AlixRicePeacepark.com. Any other cool events in the works for this season that we should keep our eyes and ears open for? We just held a Capita “Stay Bad Ass” movie premier at the shop with some skating on our indoor mini. Nov. 8 we will be holding our Annual Mucho Jib Jam at Kissing Bridge. Jan. 16 is our old school style, Late Night Great Night bus trip adventure. It all starts with food and video party at the shop followed by bus excursion and riding till 1am. We also have some event ideas to be held at HV. Where’s Frank? Frank held down the shop this summer and just recently headed back to CA. Frank lives in Mammoth Lakes pursuing a career in snowboarding. He travels with the Volcom and Jones Snowboard Team. Check out Jeremy Jones’ new movie “Higher!”. FAST FIVE: 1) music station of choice at the shop ... Rock N’ Roll 2) how often do you guys get down to Ellicottville to shred? ... As much as possible and always on POW days. 3) favorite run at HV … Too hard to choose. I always make my way to all the lifts and trails following the sun’s path. 4) favorite place to grab lunch ... John Harvard’s at HV 5) favorite EVL watering hole ... EBC

SILVER FOX STEAKHOUSE 23 Hughey Alley • 716.699.4672
ELLICOTTVILLE BREWING COMPANY 28A Monroe Street • 716.699.2537
Dubbed Ellicottville’s original steakhouse, the Silver Fox has held a long-standing reputation as one of the most comfortable and elegant restaurants in the village. Nightly chef specials, some of the finer cuts of meat around, paired with an extensive wine list make this a top choice for those in search of a finer dining experience. The Fox is also known for its famous Martini Club, held every Friday from 5-7pm ... talented bar staff whip up traditional and signature martinis, while the chefs crank out complimentary appetizers. SNOWED-IN Menu Picks: Obviously, we recommend sampling one of their Martinis (if you’re of age of course). Another unique option is their ever-popular “Date Night for 2” menu - full details at www.thesilverfoxrestaurant.com.
The recently expanded Ellicottville Brewing Company has became a tourist attraction of its own, with people traveling from near and far to sample their craft beers or tour the brewing process. With newly created private rooms, EBC can also cater any type and size event with their delicious menu complimenting over a dozen hand crafted beer varieties. In the summertime, the beer garden is often bustling with activity, so pull up a stool and check out why this restaurant receives accolades from all who visit. SNOWED-IN Menu Picks: Spicy African Peanut soup, a creamy chicken soup with peanut roux and a slightly spicy finish. Or sink your teeth into a Kobe Truffle Burger, bursting with flavor. The secret: California white truffle tremor cheese, and of course, black truffle oil.

It’s a great opportunity to leave the hustle and bustle of the downtown area and escape to the peace and quiet, accompanied by good conversation. The diner serves up some of the best breakfast around – omelets, pancakes, stuffed French toast, old-fashioned hash, sausage gravy, and our SNOWED-IN Menu Pick: Eggs Benedict. Once you’ve had your filling of good eats, meander through two floors of retail - everything from antiques to soaps, candles, toys, fudge, jam, local maple syrup and honey, tea and more! It’s a lot to take in, which means you’ll need to make regular trips back to garner complete satisfaction.
A “can’t miss” bar in Ellicottville, Madigan’s has long been a staple as one of the most popular hot spots in the village. Whether it’s late night drinks and dancing, or a mid-afternoon mixed drink break on their impressive new back patio, this bar can’t be beat. Charismatic bartenders and an impressive lunch and dinner menu await your next visit. SNOWED-IN Menu Picks: It wouldn’t be right to visit Ellicottville without a helping of Madigan’s famous wings smothered in Grace’s even more famous house sauce. Looking for something more filling? Check out the Shepherd’s Mac & Cheese, an amazing combo of their own Guinness infused macaroni and cheese and the classic shepherd’s pie.

Ellicottville, New York has long been known for its social atmosphere laden with bars, and restaurants … where those traveling from near and far can imbibe in a beverage (or three) in a lively setting unlike any other. One of these fine establishments has taken things a step further by quietly becoming a self-sufficient powerhouse in managing the output of their core product - craft beer. By now I’m sure you realize I’m referring to none other than the Ellicottville Brewing Company, a staple in the village since its humble beginnings in 1995, when owners/founders Walter and Allen Yahn and Peter Kreinheder were inspired by a ski trip to Vail, to create their own family-run brand. EBC is now on the verge of its 20th year of operation on Monroe Street (right in the heart of the village) and has experienced a great deal of success along the way. For example, within its first two years of operation, the brand had earned the Buffalo Peoples Choice Award twice, and since then, the accolades have been pouring in, pint after pint. Success continued, and in 2005, EBC opened a second location in Fredonia, NY, dubbed ‘EBC West’, which only further expanded their reach. In 2012, EBC underwent yet another metamorphosis, more than doubling their seating capacity - both indoor and outdoor - as well as their brewing output, with many more holding tanks and automated manufacturing processes added for efficiency. And that is where our story takes a turn; it’s pretty impressive to learn about just how much more is really happening at the end of Monroe Street. With this expansion also came the addition of a bottling line in the brewing hall at EBC. For the past nine months, the brewery crew have been using a machine dubbed the ‘GAI 3000’, with the number 3,000 referring to the number of bottles that the machine can package in an hour. With this increased output, EBC has been proud to add 50+ jobs right here in Ellicottville, ensuring the production rate stays high and consistent. Recently, EBC brought in some brewery consultants to test their PPB (parts per billion for all you non-beer aficionados out there) and came away with some remarkable results for a production line of their size. This increased production has also led to the brewery needing to source cold storage, shipping and receiving, leading them to take over the old Salamanca Beverage Company warehouse space in Little Valley, NY to further help with distribution. While their reach is growing annually, the primary footprint of EBC still falls in Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo, and Erie, PA. We would be remiss if we didn’t tell you about all the great varieties being packaged and shipped in-house. Among them, the ever popular Blueberry Wheat, Two Brothers Pale Ale, Stainless Steel Obsession (Indian Pale Ale), Mow Master (Ultra Pale Ale), and a new variety launching Nov. 1: Ski Bum, EBC’s Winter Ale. For any of you that have ever fancied yourself as a ski bum, this packaging will blow you away, drawing inspiration from lift tickets collected around the country, both young and old. You’ll definitely want to pick up a six-pack during your next visit to EBC. In January, EBC will launch additional new packaging, which will consist of four-packs of some of their popular winter-themed varieties, including the Chocolate Cherry Stout, Cuvee (a belgian blonde ale aged in oak barrels), Eagle Trail IPA, and of course the heavy hitting Pantius Droppus, which will feature a ‘back to college’ theme to its packaging (no pun intended, we swear …). With all the excitement and change happening at the Ellicottville Brewing Company, we absolutely recommend you get in there and take a tour of their impressive facility with your friends and family. All tour group members come away with a souvenir pint glass, as well as a better understand of the craft beer industry, which is alive and well and right in our own backyard. Whether it’s a midweek anniversary party, ‘why not’ party, or simply a group of business travelers looking for local food and entertainment, this is the perfect accoutrement to your visit. Give them a shout at 716-699-2537 to reserve, ask questions, or to place your orders ahead of your visit. You can also find them at www.ellicottvillebrewing.com.
