Chill Out on the Trails of the Enchanted Mountains of Western New York
Where Do You Want To Play?
Late fall into early winter can evoke more terror than a skeleton on Halloween to some, but don’t stress ... come chill out in Cattaraugus County! The “in between” season still offers much to do here with celebrations of Halloween, holiday shopping (it’s time to start thinking Christmas!), and plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors, regardless of the weather. SNOWMOBILE TRAILS
PUMPKINVILLE
ALLEGANY STATE PARK
FINAL FALL ADVENTURES Kick off your fall adventure at Pumpkinville. Open every day until Halloween, families make their way to Great Valley, NY each year for the hayrides, corn cannon shoot, Storyland, cow train, goat mountain and 6-acre corn field maze. Purchase a variety of fresh picked apples or visit the Pick-Your-Own-Pumpkin Patch. Watch the Pumpkinville team press fresh apple cider, then head over to the on-site bakery, Di’s Pies and Bake Shoppe. Purchase your share of pumpkin bread, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin muffins and pumpkin and apple pies as they come right out of the oven. The kids will keep warm while jumping on the Pumpkin Jumpin’ Pillows and they will undoubtedly feel the thrill of racing on the brand new Farm Featured Pedal Karts. The Enchanted Mountains offers many Fall Foliage Destinations. It just makes sense that an area surrounded by hills and valleys of trees, that also embraces the outdoors, would have some of the best places to go during the autumn Season. Rock City Park and Griffis Sculpture Park remain open until the end of October. Have a fall ball walking through the leaves while you gaze up at gigantic rocks or climb larger-than-life steel sculptures.
ALLEGANY STATE PARK Allegany State Park will have you seeing double vision as you view the trees and then their reflections off of Quaker Lake, Red House Lake, and Science Lake. The park is open year ‘round and has plenty of activities for visitors to enjoy. Yes Allegany State Park is gorgeous in autumn, but don’t forget to come back and visit its beauty in the winter. It is the largest in New York State that also boasts the largest trail system for cross country skiing in Western New York, which is considered one of the finest double-track systems in the Northeastern U.S.! Never tried XC skiing or snowshoeing? Make a stop at the Warming Hut to pick up rental equipment, get valuable tips and information, then head out to the trails (no charge for trails without renting). Even if you can’t master the sport, you will be able to view some of the prettiest landscapes and snow covered treescapes in the county! Once you get the hang of it (or if you are already an expert), try the trails on the two properties of Pfeiffer Nature Center in Portville, NY.
A DIFFERENT KIND OF TRAIL To capture awesome sights of the agricultural side of the Enchanted Mountains and start your Christmas shopping with some unique, handmade gifts, plan a trip along New York’s Amish Trail. Experience a heritage and culture unlike none other on this trail of a different kind. Marvel at a lifestyle that works hard without the use of modern conveniences. Many Amish residences house retail shops selling anything from fresh homemade jams and jellies, to colorful handcrafted rugs and quilts, woven baskets, handmade furniture, fun wooden toys and yummy goats milk fudge. Stop along the “English” members of the Amish Trail for dining, more
shopping and lodging. The friendly owners welcome your visit and can share more information about the local Amish. To learn more, including information on guided tours, local businesses along the trail and area accommodations, call 1-800-331-0543 or visit WNYAmishTrail.com.
“MADE IN CATTARAUGUS COUNTY” The holiday season seems to come quicker each year, and no one wants to wait until the snow flies to get started on preparing for it. Many annual festivals offer great early shopping opportunities. Find that unique, made-in-Cattaraugus-County gift at the W.I.L.M.A. event at the Little Valley Fairgrounds. Held in the last part of October, visitors can expect to find only people who create, manufacture, or craft specialty items in the county. Discover why not only is the Enchanted Mountains region beautiful, but home to creative folks as well. Another great event to hit up: the Portville Art and Antique Show: art items, craft items and antiques all under one convenient roof Nov. 8-9, held in the Portville High School. Free parking, free shuttle service from parking lots, a concession stand, gift basket raffles, and over 80 vendors for great variety. Nearly 2,000 people return to the area to annual this festival, and you can appreciate the low admission price of just $3! The Routes to Art Sale at Holiday Valley, Nov. 16, offers one-stop shopping as well. Each year participating artists gather together to make your holiday shopping easier by selling their wares inside Holiday Valley’s main lodge. A wide assortment of items will include cards, books, prints, jewelry, pottery, ornaments, and more!
OVER 400 MILES OF SNOWMOBILING We may have what some people might call harsh winters, but we sure know how to enjoy them! Feel the crisp excitement of winter while dashing through the snow on your snowmobile on over 400 miles of trails throughout the county. Downloadable trail maps are available at www.enchantedmountains.com or get the print version by calling 1-800-331-0543. Allegany State Park is also known for its snowmobiling, offering 90+ miles of trails. It is considered one of the most well-groomed areas to snowmobile and offers plenty of room for the whole gang to stay at Group Camp 5. The newest destination for wintry recess, this camp on the Quaker side of Allegany includes 18 insulated cabins, a huge mess hall with tables, chairs, refrigerator, upright freezer, and individual showers. Call 800-456-2267 to reserve your stay.

It’s safe to say if you’re reading this publication, you’re well aware of the ski resort prowess Holiday Valley and HoliMont bring to the table. Both are pioneers in their respective categories (public/private resorts), which continue to re-invest in their properties and the community of Ellicottville annually. But, should you find yourself visiting town in the “offseason,” you don’t need to worry about finding something to do. The summer months are very much an “on-season” here in the village and surrounding areas, and here’s proof …
photo/@dash_913
TAKE TO THE TREES OF SKY HIGH One of the most popular attractions bringing people to town these days is Sky High Adventure Park at Holiday Valley, now in its fourth season of operation. Speaking from experience, this park is AWESOME. Priced at just $48, your ticket nets access to 13 different courses that will challenge you both mentally and physically. Not to worry however - the adventure park is well staffed with plenty of enthusiastic attendants who can talk you through any tricky situation, or if you get in a real jam, even assist you back to the ground. Of the 13 courses, you’ll find a well balanced array of ability levels, similar to your favorite ski resort. From the novice lower level courses to the intimidating sounding “Commando” course, there is truly something for everyone. Back to “Commando”: this course is no joke, and is a true feeling of accomplishment (if you can complete it). Last summer, Holiday Valley dropped an addition into the park, which they dubbed the “3-D Climbing Forest,” which adds even more aerial activity for the climbing enthusiast. The climbing forest consists of bouldering holds affixed to trees up to 60’ in height and varying difficulty, which can provide a challenge to even the most skilled climber. Rates start at just $15 for this part of the park. Unwind a bit after you tackle the courses with a ride down the fun-for-all-ages mountain coaster, and you’ve covered all your bases. I can guarantee you will leave Sky High exhausted and smiling. Given the popularity of the park, it is highly suggested you call them at 716-699-4444 to make a reservation.
DOUBLE BLACK DIAMOND GOLF COURSE Sticking with the Holiday Valley theme for a moment, the Double Black Diamond golf course can be found at the main base area of Holiday Valley Resort. This par 70, approximately 6,000-yard course will challenge even the most polished handicapper. With spectacular views from many of the tee boxes, even if you’re having a heck of a time hitting that little white ball straight (guilty) you will still enjoy yourself. The resort offers packages if you’re looking to stay overnight, and a tee time is always recommended. You can make a tee time by calling 716-699-2345 or by stopping into the generously stocked Holiday Valley Golf Shop, where you certainly will be able to make yourself look like a pro, even if your swing isn’t up to “par.”
JOIN EVL’S GROWING MOUNTAIN BIKE COMMUNITY One of the other great secrets of the region is the incredible mountain biking trail system found between Holiday Valley and HoliMont, as well as the surrounding hilly, forested terrain. Challenging single track mixed with a variety of other terrain are just one of the reasons the IMBA has went as far as to label the trails in the area “EPIC.” With over 35 miles of trails locally, you’re sure to find something that is up your alley, and you will certainly see why people come from far, far away to hit the trails here. If you’re looking for more info on the trail system, some gear for your ride, or some delicious grub to refuel after your ride, make sure you pop into Bike & Bean in downtown EVL for all the goods. You can also give them a shout at 716-699-2453.
AN OFF-SEASON FULL OF FESTIVALS
FIND A FULL YEAR OF FESTIVALS AT WWW.ELLICOTTVILLENY.COM
It’s safe to say there will be something going on during each of your Ellicottville visits. Along with the notorious array of shops, bars and restaurants, Ellicottville plays host to a slew of festivals and celebrations throughout the “winter waiting period.” Among the largest is the Summer Music Festival, which brings in major recording artists to entertain the masses on a slopeside amphitheater at Holiday Valley. Another personal favorite of mine is the annual Taste of Ellicottville, which gives local restaurants the chance to show off samplings of their staple entrees, or venture into uncharted territory with some off-the-wall creation. (A must-attend event in my book.) There is also the Jazz Festival, Rock n’ Roll Weekend which features killer tunes and an impressive village-wide car show, and of course everyone’s favorite event, Fall Festival, which literally completely transforms Ellicottville into a mass celebration of the approaching winter season. Beer tents, vendors, music, and of course the brilliant fall foliage we look forward to annually can be expected, so put on those party pants and stamp it on your calendar, or click on over to www.ellicottvilleny.com for a complete schedule of the year’s events. With so much to do, what are you waiting for? Get down to Ellicottville and take advantage of all the things we have to offer, no matter what the season is. After all, no one likes seasonal friends when there are four seasons of fun to be had … right here in this wonderful village!

Whether you’re visiting Ellicottville, traveling through Cattaraugus County on the Amish Trail, or simply looking for an enjoyable place to spend one of the last few weekends of autumn, consider the city of Salamanca your destination. Located just ten minutes south of Ellicottville, Salamanca is the intersection of history, Native American culture, breathtaking geography, and fun for visitors of all ages! From Ellicottville, visitors can take Route 219 down to Salamanca while enjoying scenic views of the mountains, as Allegany State Park looms just beyond the city limits. Although a city like Salamanca and the Allegheny Mountains may seem like unlikely, even contrary neighbors, just the opposite is true. Indeed, there is a harmonious and historical bond between the landscape and Salamanca’s original inhabitants, as Salamanca is located on the reservation of the Seneca Nation of Indians, the largest tribe of the Iroquois Confederacy of Nations. Uniquely, Salamanca is the only city in the United States to lie almost entirely on a Native American Reservation. Those interested in the culture and history of the Seneca Nation will appreciate a visit to the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum located on Broad Street. This museum not only illuminates the history of the Seneca in Cattaraugus County, but also the Iroquois Nation, which consists of five other tribes across New York State. Train enthusiasts and history lovers alike will enjoy the Salamanca Rail Museum on Main Street, which is a fully restored passenger depot built in 1912. Once the hub of the hardwood industry, Salamanca was very much a railroad town in the early 20th century, a past that is beautifully portrayed in this museum, which is free to the public.

ENGELBERT HUMPERDINCK Legendary Singer a.k.a. “King of Romance” to Perform at Salamanca Venue
A Conversation with Elgelbert HULICK: It’s great to hear you are coming back to the area. ENGELBERT: Yes! I’ve been in that area many times. That is such a beautiful part of the country and I’m looking forward to playing the casino. HULICK: I can’t imagine how many shows you’ve done and the traveling. ENGELBERT: (laughs) … Tell me!! 47 years of traveling around the world … it’s got to be stretching somewhere in the region of millions of miles. HULICK: You have been a very busy man since we last spoke in 2009. ENGELBERT: I try to keep myself busy. It’s a way of life for me; it’s not like a job I have to do, and I enjoy what I do. It’s a very creative business and I’m always embellishing on my show … always improving it and trying to give my audience a piece of difference when I come to their town. HULICK: Let’s talk about your new album, Engelbert Calling. ENGELBERT: I’m SO excited about it! It’s an album of duets with some of the biggest and most loved artists in the music business. Artists like Elton John, Johnny Mathis, Wynonna Judd, Gene Simmons … just to name a few. I have so much more material to share with my fans and it’s bouncing up the charts already. It was number one before it was even released. Isn’t that something? HULICK: Yes, it’s terrific! ENGELBERT: You know no matter how many records you’ve sold in your life, every time you have a chart entry it’s like winning the lottery.
.............................. FRIDAY | NOVEMBER 7, 2014 By Melanie Hulick Engelbert Humperdinck has been sharing his amazing voice with the world for 47 years and will make an appearance at Seneca Allegany Casino in Salamanca on Friday, Nov. 7. Born Arnold George Dorsey, the singer started out singing and doing impersonations of Jerry Lewis in a pub in Leicester, England under the name Gerry Dorsey. He continued with music on the UK circuit until he contracted tuberculosis that kept him down and out of the public eye for six months. Regaining his health and still with his love of music, Humberdinck started over with his new name and the hunger to become one of the most sought after voices in the industry. Reaching that plateau and more, he has sold millions of albums, with 63 reaching gold status and 24 reaching platinum status. His name is synonymous with romance and timeless ballads that have kept him in the forefront of Adult Contemporary music for over 40 years. I had the chance to talk with the music legend for a third time recently, and he still has that unending passion and excitement for music that has taken him around the world more times than he can count. With a new album just released titled “Engelbert Calling,” which has him singing duets with artists such as Johnny Mathis, Sir Elton John, Smokey Robinson, Dionne Warwick, Neil Sedaka, Willie Nelson and an artist Humperdinck described to me as a rock God (who you will read about in the following conversation), the singer is loving life both professionally and personally. With nine grandchildren, he and his beautiful wife Patricia just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, to which he commented to me, “It’s been a wonderful journey with us and I hope it never ends.” Known as the King of Romance in the music industry, you could say he wears the title very well in his personal life also.
..............................
Tickets to Engelbert Humperdinck’s performance at Seneca Allegany Casino in Salamanca start at $35 and can be purchased through www.senecacasinos.com (click on Seneca Allegany). For more information on his newest album, visit www.engelbert.com
HULICK: With the new album, did you have the opportunity to record in studio with most of the artists you collaborated with? ENGELBERT: A few of the artists and I were able to pull our schedules together and record in the studio together. Working with Sir Elton John and Gene Simmons from KISS in the studio was an amazing time in my life. You know, not only is Gene Simmons a rock God, but in the studio he brought so much excitement and ease. He said let’s have fun and make it a party! He has such a wonderful personality. When the single comes out, you’re going to hear it has so much fun on it. HULICK: Were you and Johnny Mathis able to record together? ENGELBERT: No, because Johnny was busy at the time and I was busy at the times he was available. But, what a joy … I mean this is a guy who is like Nat King Cole - so recognizable and so wonderful and his method of singing is so unique. I’ve loved Johnny Mathis all my life as a singer. He’s sold millions and millions of albums and to have him on my album is such a joy. HULICK: He is such a gentle man. I’ve interviewed him many times and we’ve maintained this sort of friendship over the past almost ten years where after his show I go back stage to say hello and he always gives me a hug and we talk a bit about what we’ve been up to. ENGELBERT: How wonderful. I’ve met him several times and he’s just a truly wonderful guy. HULICK: Tell me about the name of the album. ENGELBERT: I was listening to a live album of Elton John and he was telling the audience, “This is a song I wrote many years ago when I was a struggling artist living in a flat in London with my partner Bernie Taupin. I had written the song and I’d be waiting for Engelbert Humperdinck to call.” HULICK: Oh my gosh! ENGELBERT: Yes! He went on to say he wanted me to make it a hit or take it off his hands. So I finally called and that’s how this new album came about with the title, “Engelbert Calling”. I called all the artists that are on this particular body of work and they all responded in a very, very positive way and it was just wonderful to know that people of that caliber can say thank you, I’d love to do it. HULICK: It’s funny Engelbert … you are telling me what legends Johnny Mathis and Elton John are, but I’m sure they are thinking the same thing about you. You are in a class all by yourself as far as a legend goes. ENGELBERT: Oh, thank you very much Melanie. HULICK: What would you like your legacy to be? ENGELBERT: Well my legacy is definitely in the vein of music, because to leave a melodic tone behind when all is gone is something that will keep going forever and ever. Even today the legends of the past like Bing Crosby are still being played on the radio long after their passing. It’s just an amazing thing what music does to a person’s life. It just keeps that longevity in the minds of the people.

The Allegheny National Forest is known as the land of many uses. It is also a land that can be seen from many vantage points whether it’s by air, land or water. Located 30 miles south of Ellicottville, the Forest sits just across the NY/PA state line.
CAPTURE A BIRD’S EYE VIEW
One of the many exciting adventures visitors can enjoy is a ride in a vintage biplane soaring over the hills of the forest and Kinzua Bridge State Park. Experienced pilot Bruce Klein offers rides in his beautifully restored 1943 Boeing Stearman, which features an open cockpit. This biplane is a safe and enjoyable – as well as memorable – experience. Take advantage of this bird’s eye view to see the scenic beauty of the Alleghenies and the amazing structure within the Kinzua Gorge - the Kinzua Sky Walk. Vintage Biplane Rides, which take off from the Bradford Regional Airport on Route 59 outside of Bradford, are offered all year round. Individual rates, group rates and gift certificates are available. Book your flight by calling Bruce at 814-6429486 or 814-558-5376. There’s also an opportunity to see the region as you float down to earth after parachuting from an airplane. Freefall Oz Skydiving Center is for first time jumpers, students, spectators and experienced skydivers. First time jumpers will do a tandem jump accompanied by Ashley Easdon-Smith, a member of the United States Parachute Association. Located in northeastern McKean County, Pa., Oz Homestay is a fly-in B&B that hosts skydiving on-site. Call 814-6977218 or click over to www.freefallozskydiving.com for more information.
WALK THE TRACKS ACROSS THE SKY No reservations are needed to step foot on the Kinzua Sky Walk, part of the Kinzua Bridge State Park in Mount Jewett, PA. The Sky Walk is built on a historic masterpiece, the Kinzua Viaduct, which was once the highest and longest railroad viaduct in the world. Constructed in 1882 and used for commerce and tourist excursions, the viaduct was partially destroyed by a tornado in 2003. In the Fall of 2011, the viaduct was reinvented as the Kinzua Sky Walk which allows visitors to once again “Walk the Tracks Across the Sky.” Take a stroll out 600 feet on the Sky Walk into the vast Kinzua Gorge where you can see the beautiful, rolling landscape for miles. Once you reach the end of the Sky Walk, you will be treated with another view while peering down through the partial glass platform to the valley floor hundreds of feet below.
HIT THE TRAILS You can also enjoy the Kinzua Bridge State Park from yet another vantage point - by land. The General Thomas Kane Trail is a one-mile-loop hiking trail in the state park. Expect to see a diverse sampling of tree species, including the American Chestnut, along with the opportunity to catch a glimpse of a wide variety of bird species. Picnic tables located throughout the park are shaded by a tree canopy with some offering views of the Sky Walk. The Kinzua Bridge Scenic Byway is a designated shared use hike/bike corridor that connects scenic Pennsylvania Route 6 to the state park, so be sure to bring your bike. While in the area, take a walk on the Marilla Trail System. A local favorite is the Marilla Bridges Trail, which loops around the Marilla Reservoir. This one-mile-loop offers forest and water vistas. Highlights include the Erik Benjamin Covered Bridge, three rustic wooden trestle bridges, and a delightful gazebo located at the southwestern corner of the trail. The trailhead is located along Route 346, five miles west of the City of Bradford; fishing is allowed.
DIP INTO THE WATERS For those who love the water, the Allegheny Reservoir is ripe with opportunity to see the Forest from yet another location – a boat, kayak or canoe. Canoes and kayaks are available for rent at Willow Bay Recreational Area in the Allegheny National Forest. For pricing contact Allegheny Site Management at 814-368-4158. Water lovers can also check with B’s Canoeing Guide Service for availability of their guided canoe trips on the Tunungwant, or as the locals call it, the “Tuna.” Your canoe trip will travel a seven-mile scenic water trail that is always smooth and floatable. There’s no need to walk this trail. Call Brian Pfister at 814-598-7348 or e-mail bscanoeingguide@yahoo.com. For more on the Allegheny National Forest Region or to order a FREE Travel Guide & Map, contact the ANF Visitors Bureau at 800-473-9370 or email info@visitANF.com.
