By Pat Morgan Great news everyone - it’s finally THAT time of year again. The autumn chill is back in the air, the leaves have created their annual colorful hillside inferno, and people are popping in to their favorite specialty shops to pick up the latest and greatest in winter gear and accessories. One of the more popular festivals in the Western New York area not to be missed: the Holiday Valley Beer & Wine Festival, happening Nov. 6-7. If you’ve never attended or heard of this incredible event, allow us to ‘pour on’ the details so you know what’s ‘on tap’… This year’s event will again run as a two-part affair, proudly presented by the Ellicottville Brewing Company, Southern Tier Brewing Company, and of course the host venue Holiday Valley Resort. Now in it’s 12th year of existence, the event has evolved from a rather quaint affair at the original Clubhouse Chalet, to one of the hottest tickets in town, due in part to the recent resurgence and popularity of the craft brewing industry throughout the region. On Saturday, Nov. 7 at 3:30pm, this event will continue its evolution, now utilizing the entire Holiday Valley Lodge, with all three floors having their own unique musical sounds and vibe. The ground floor will consist of a newly created ‘wine cellar’, featuring some of the finest vintners in the region, including the Winery of Ellicottville, Heron Hill Winery, Black Willow Winery, Merritt Estate, and more. If wine isn’t your go-to, not to worry, the main level and upper level of the chalet are also playing host to a bouquet of regional and national brewers, as well as live bands throughout the day. Among the brewers who were in attendance last year (take a deep breath): Big Ditch, Southern Tier, Ellicottville Brewing, John Harvard’s, Brooklyn Brewery, Voodoo Brewery, Victory Brewing, North American Breweries, Boston Beer Co., Hamburg Brewing Co., Empire Brewing Company, Shock Top/Goose Island, Three Heads Brewing, Sly Fox, Great Lakes Brewing, North Country Brewing, DG Yuengling, Son Brewery, Ithaca, Rohrbachs Brewing, Ommegang, Saranac Brewery, Consumers Beverage featuring Flying Monkey’s Smashbomb Atomic IPA and craft brews from Sanzo, as well as a variety of season ciders from Vermont Hard Cider, DeMunck’s Hard Cider, Original Sin, McKenzie & Black Bird … it’s safe to say there will truly be something for every pallet found at this festival! If you cannot make it to the primary event Saturday, fret not spirit enthusiasts: the Brewmaster’s Dinner returns Friday evening, and it promises to be bigger and better than ever! Dubbed the ‘Golden Age of Hollywood Dinner’, guests are encouraged to don their finest suits, gowns and jewels, to embody the spirit of the Hollywood 40’s & 50’s. This dinner is now in its 10th year of production, and has featured such themes as farm-to-table, as well as course selections where the primary ingredient was none other than beer. Hors d’oeuvres get under way at 6pm, with the tapping of the traditional kolsch taking place at 7pm. From there, guests can mill about the various food stations, sampling beer paired with various food items. Most importantly, you’ll have the opportunity to pick the brains of the countless brewers on-hand, who are eager to speak of their craft with all who stop by. Now here’s the important part - this event WILL (I repeat WILL) sell out, so do NOT delay getting your tickets. You don’t want to be the guy scrambling the week of, do you? Tickets are currently available at www.holidayvalley.com, Consumer’s Beverage, Wegman’s, and of course at Ellicotville Brewing Company and Holiday Valley Resort. Tickets for the Beer & Wine Festival are $52.50 until Nov. 1, at which point they will rise to $60 (if there are even any left). The Brew Master Dinner tickets are available for $65. Make a weekend out of it and inquire about some of the great lodging packages available at Holiday Valley, phone 716-699-2345.

As many of you already know, Ellicottville is home to some of the most entertaining festivals and events in Western NY. From the multiple fetes produced by the local Chamber of Commerce, to the countless gatherings afforded by HoliMont and Holiday Valley, there are no shortage of reasons to visit our village. One of these reasons is coming up quite soon: the 2nd Annual EVL Half Marathon & 5k, hitting the streets of the area on Saturday, Oct. 24. This Halloween costume themed race is truly fun for all levels of participants, whether you’re an avid marathoner or casual jogger. Costumes are encouraged, but certainly not mandatory, making this an enjoyable spectator event for those lining the start / finish area in downtown Ellicottville.

Admittedly, visual art has always seemed to go over my head, especially contemporary art pieces. It was only a few years back that I came to the conclusion that there was nothing more to get. My frustration with art originated from a situation more or less like this: “This painting makes me feel kind of sad.” “Why?” “I don’t know … it just does.” As someone who has always prided himself on his ability to communicate well, the ineffability of art seemed to be a real blow to my ego.

The event is the brainchild of Ellicottville locals and event directors Doug and Gwen Bush, who were inspired by several regional events, as well as the Centurion Cycling event - the large cycling series that visited EVL a few summers ago. Doug, being a 10-year veteran participant of the Ironman Triathlons in Canada and Hawaii, an exercise and physiology training professional, and Gwen with her extensive background in the entertainment industry, saw opportunity to create something unique to the area that embodied the spirit and excitement typically associated with Ellicottville. The goal was simple: create a total experience event that even the most seasoned, serious participant could enjoy, alongside those who may only partake in one event per year. It’s safe to say with nearly 1,000 runners the first year, their vision was ultimately successful. With year one in the books, the Bushes have already made several improvements for this year’s race, including bringing in ‘Score This!!!’ timing, which is used by the biggest marathon events in the world, including the Buffalo, NYC, Chicago, and Boston Marathons, as well as the ‘Turkey Trot’, one of the biggest running events in the country. With any event such as this, there are a variety of details to go over to ensure you get the most out of participating. The EVL Half Marathon & 5k has now grown to what could be a two-day event. One of the proud partners in the event, the Ellicottville Brewing Company, will kick everything off Friday evening, Oct. 23, as they will be hosting a race packet pick-up in their beer garden from 4-7pm for those wishing to avoid the hustle of a raceday morning. On top of that, they are also offering a delicious, carb-filled pasta dinner for $19.99, for those looking to stock up on race fuel. The following morning, things kick off again at EBC from 7-10:30am for the next round of race packet pick-up. The EVL Half will get underway at 11am in front of The City Garage on Monroe Street. For those looking for a lighter Saturday, the 5k hits the streets at 11:15am. By 12:30pm, awards will be underway for the 5k portion of the event back at EBC, following the Watson’s Chocolates-sponsored costume contest (remember: encouraged, but not mandatory). Athletes will be treated to generous portions of recovery fluids and foods, as well as a fixed price menu to top off their tanks. At 2:30pm, the EVL half marathoners will have finished, and the last of the impressive EVL Half Marathon medals will be awarded. As with any Ellicottville event, this is certainly a cause for a party, and so it will feature DJ John Nelson providing entertainment in the beer garden throughout the afternoon. Additionally, EBC will be hosting their own version of ‘brewery games’ on Monroe Street, which will include a keg toss and various other entertaining feats of wonder. For more information on this year’s EVL Half Marathon & 5k, go to www.evlhalf.com or follow it on Facebook for frequent updates and training insight. Doug and Gwen wish to thank the local community of Ellicottville who made year one so successful, including but not limited to: participants, local businesses, law enforcement, the Nazareth Food Pantry, Ellicottville Sports Boosters, Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce, Springville Track Club, Wingate Hotel, and of course the Village Board. These events aren’t possible without the support of many, and truly thrive in small, character filled towns such as Ellicottville!

My first year off at college, however, I had an art major friend of mine sum it up for me rather nicely. She claimed the goal of art isn’t to trigger a logical response, but rather an affective one. It’s like music. No one expects you to be able to explain why a certain song makes you feel a certain way. That’s the real talent of an artist - to be able to create universal feeling from nothing more than colors or clay or carvings or photographs. I made my peace with art; you could say I’ve even developed a great appreciation for it. Lucky for all art enthusiasts, the Winter Arts Festival is just around the corner. The Winter Arts Festival is a phenomenal opportunity for the community to visit with local fine artists and artisans, and maybe even squeeze in some holiday shopping. The event is being hosted at Holiday Valley Lodge (a gorgeous enough location to rival the beautiful art that promises to be within) over two days, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 21-22. Local artists plying their craft this year include: Mikel Wintermantel, Barbara Fox, Tom Martin, Elliott Hutten, Darlene Allen, Lisa Yohon, Jennifer Acklin, Lindsey Ahrens, John Balacki, Judson Brown, Charlotte Cappellino, Lisa Conklin, Al Dornisch, Dewey Fladd, Theresa Heinz, Keith McKale, Deborah Moyer, Ellen Paquette, Carolyn Raine, Eileen Weishan, Michael Weishan, and Robin Zefers Clark, just to name a few. With such a wide spread of artists, you can bet that nearly all of the major disciplines will be represented. This year’s festival expects to showcase paintings, pottery, photographs, textiles, jewelry, and much more. Both days will have live musical performances to augment the atmosphere of the gathering. There will even be activities for children; perhaps you can start them on the creative path of inspiration and culture. This event is put on by the Cattaraugus County Arts Council (CCAC), an organization dedicated to the promotion of local art and artists. The Winter Arts Festival has come to replace the Routes to Art Holiday Sale as the Arts Council’s major event of the year. The participants this year may not necessarily fit that old “starving artist” stereotype, but nonetheless, your participation in this festival ensures that these fine people get to continue doing what they love. Are you an artist yourself? Now is the time to showcase your talent! The Winter Arts Festival is open to any artist or artisan in the Western New York and Southern Tier areas. At this time, the Arts Council is still accepting new vendors, so anyone interested should visit their website at www.myartscouncil.net to see guidelines and registration information. The more, the merrier! This gathering really is a great way to help support our local artists. These people produce works that help define our community and our regional identity. Everyone is encouraged to attend this festival to appreciate the labors of their love. Besides, there are very few Christmas gifts that say “refinement” and “good taste” like a piece of local art does. I implore you to go to this year’s Winter Arts Festival and remind you that real art appreciation means never having to answer the question, “Why?”

RANKED #3 IN THE EAST

By Spencer Timkey Progression. Innovation. Development. Since Holiday Valley’s genesis, these are the nouns we use to describe the resort. Every off-season, it’s all hands on deck - from management, to Mountain Operations, to Food & Beverage - to make a concentrated effort to make an already stellar product even better. When you speak in terms of national recognition, resorts like Snowbird, Mammoth Mountain and Okemo are names you hear often. But you’d be shocked at how many people across the North American continent know, and love, Holiday Valley. Appealing to skiers and riders of all ages and ability levels, Holiday Valley’s geographic location draws visitors from metro areas like Buffalo, Toronto, Cleveland and Pittsburgh. If you’re on the western edge of Ohio, you can drive 20 hours to Colorado ... or 5 to Ellicottville. If you’re in metro Toronto, you can jet down the QEW and be here in less than 3 hours. From snowmaking, to lodging, to customer service, to apres, Holiday Valley and Ellicottville provide it all.

RESORT RANKINGS It is these reasons why SKI Magazine, in its perennial resort rankings, gave Holiday Valley the 3rd Overall ranking for the East Coast. It is the 3rd year in a row that HV has placed in the Top-5. Refusing stagnancy, leadership at the resort - under tenured President Dennis Eshbaugh - constantly pushes itself to give visitors the best experience possible.

Bob Armour, a ski resort veteran, will take the reins. “Bob has extensive knowledge in ski school programs, as he worked at Peek n’Peak for over 30 years,” Eshbaugh said. “He’s been a supervisor here for the past two seasons, so he’s already acclimated to the vibe of the resort. We’re excited to have him on-board as the new director.” In an effort to continue the mission of environmental consciousness, there are multiple runs where the lights will be replaced with high efficiency LEDs. If they work well, you might just see the resort replace all of the lights. “LEDs are very efficient in terms of energy usage, and we want to reduce our carbon footprint as much as possible,” Eshbaugh said. “Think of this year as a trial run. If the runs with the LEDs work well and ski well (in terms of lighting) then we’ll talk about continuing the process of replacing the entire resort with them.” The advent of smartphones has made companies quickly learn that a highly interactive, mobilefriendly website is the key to staying relevant. Burlington, Vermont-based web design firm Propellor has been contracted by the resort to build an entirely new website - from scratch.

While some changes are quite noticeable (like the new Holiday Valley Road, more on that later) it is the subtle nuances that provide subconscious, positive effects. For instance, installation of automated HKD Snowmaking guns allow the resort’s snowmakers to make the best snow where and when it’s needed. Of the various rankings, here’s how HV stacked against the competition: Lifts, Lodging, Dining, Kid Friendly, On Mountain Food (#2); Apres, Off-Hill Activities (#3); Service (#6); Terrain Parks (#7); Overall Satisfaction (#8); Value (#9); Character (#10). Since 1994, the resort has reinvested over $118 million in itself.

“The website is something we’ve been looking at for a couple of seasons, and we’ll be going live with it very soon,” Eshbaugh said. “It’s a radically different look - lots of video integration, easier navigation and much more ‘wide open.’ We know how important social media is, so there’s going to be a section on the homepage with a revolving Instagram feed both from our current account (@holidayvalley) and those of our visitors who upload.” And the trail map is also getting a facelift, with an interactive version available on the new site. Many of you know and love the webcams - constantly checking what’s happening - so there will be live feeds on the new site as well.

NEW FOR THIS SEASON

JOHN HARVARD’S BREW HOUSE

If you’ve been to Holiday Valley, you’re aware of the road that takes you up the hill, past the Main, to Yodeler and beyond. A drastic change at the resort for the upcoming season is the renovation and rerouting of the current road. Crews from J.D. Northrup Construction have been diligently working all summer to prepare the road for the upcoming winter, and completion date is scheduled for mid-October. “The new road is the big one for this season,” Holiday Valley Director of Marketing Jane Eshbaugh said, referencing the $4 million in overall capital improvement funds. “It’s a multiyear project that will improve access to the resort, parking, traffic and pedestrian safety. Now, the main parking area will be where the current road sits, and the road will take you up and around and exit by the Valley Village condos.” The addition of more HKD Automated Snowmaking guns is also in progress. Already in place around a large portion of the resort, count Tannenbaum and Fiddler’s Elbow as the newest recipients. The guns, which use on-hill weather centers to calculate temperature and humidity levels, allow snowmaking crews to flip a gun on or off - with the simple tap on the iPhone. “We now have 237 automated HKD guns, and those additions are why we rank so high in SKI Mag’s snowmaking category,” Eshbaugh said. “In total, the resort has over 611 snowmaking guns. It makes it far easier to give our visitors an awesome product if Mother Nature decides not to cooperate.”

PARKS, SKI SCHOOL AND MOVES The relocation of one of the terrain parks to Fiddler’s Elbow last season was a huge hit. Although the snow (either natural or man-made) was always top-notch, park lovers will be happy to hear that automated snowmaking guns are being placed strategically down the run. This way, there will always be the best possible snow being made at the right times.

Half the fun of hitting a ski resort is the apres! After a strong day on the slopes, a cold beverage is the perfect way to end it. John Harvard’s Brew House, home to over 20 beers on tap, has views of the slopes and a (very cool) concrete bar. Bartenders will ask you how your day on the slopes went, all the while keeping you satisfied with drinks and food. “The food and drinks are excellent, but nothing makes a good apres experience like an awesome bartender,” said Franco Brady, Holiday Valley’s director of food & beverage (of CenterPlate). “The brick oven (for pizzas) is always hot, and the views of the slopes - especially when they’re lit up at night - complements the experience so well.” John Harvard’s square-shaped bar allows you to communicate with other visitors and swap stories. Or, if you’ve got the family, there’s tons of additional seating. Your favorite beers are all on tap, including seasonals from Ellicottville Brewing Company and Southern Tier Brewing. The Cabana Bar, a favorite of visitors in the summertime, got a makeover and now boasts a hard-top roof (compared to the tent-style it was before). Cabana will be open for special events and parties throughout the winter, so if you’re interested in hosting one, make sure to call the food & beverage department.

MOUNTAIN COASTER / TUBING PARK Two very underrated activities at the resort are the Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster and the Tubing Park. The coaster, located at Tannenbaum, takes you up the hill in a two-person sled and then loops and twirls back down through the trees. Bonus? You control the speed with hand brakes. “The coaster is a huge hit,” Eshbaugh said. “Parents can ride with their kids (as long as the combined weight is under the limit) and it’s a great time, especially at night. If you’ve done the coaster and want to experience some more high-speed thrills, the Tubing Park is for you.”

NASTAR, the racing course open to the public, used to reside on Cindy’s. This season, however, it’s being bumped one run over to Foxfire. New construction began on the starting gate in midSeptember, so it’ll be ready to rock by the time the snow flies.

The Tubing Park, located just a short drive down Route 242 east of the village, has 22 lanes with quality snowmaking to match. When it’s super cold, put those goggles on - because you’re going to go fast, Ricky Bobby.

Longtime ski school director Ron Kubicki is retiring this year, capping an absolutely stellar tenure in which the various programs grew and developed into what they are now.

There’s a special vibe around Holiday Valley and Ellicottville that’s validated by SKI Magazine’s Resort Rankings. If you haven’t experienced it for yourself, we highly encourage you visit!

#WinterIsComing THE 2015-16 SEASON IS QUICKLY APPROACHING ... ARE YOU READY? HoliMont’s Weekday Experience Pass offers 10 non-transferable lift tickets and 5 group clinics for as little as $240. Since the weekday traffic is considerably less than the weekend traffic, at times it is almost as if you have the slopes to yourself.

Already picking out what fresh new gear you want to purchase for the season? Perhaps you knew the answer to that question months ago. If so, then you also know that the leaves on the trees of Ellicottville are changing color, which means that it’s almost time for another fantastic season out on the slopes. And rest assured, HoliMont is looking forward to helping you enjoy every single snow-filled moment this winter. If you’re a Member at HoliMont, North America’s largest private ski club, you know that it is an experience that can be tough to put into words because it really is just that – an incredible winter experience. Any time throughout the season you can hit the slopes and set your skis on edge to engage your finely tuned, high performance skis or snowboard on pristinely groomed corduroy and carve down one of HoliMont’s 52 slopes. But as with most things in life, picturing it doesn’t do it justice. Until you can actually feel that crisp Western New York winter air on your face as you cruise down a slope, all you can really do is imagine what spending your winters at this family-friendly ski club is all about. Located just outside the village of Ellicottville, NY, HoliMont Ski Area has a slightly different mantra than many ski areas you are familiar with. HoliMont, you see, is a private ski club with a membership base that is very passionate about their little slice of winter ecstasy. Think this is like your grandfather’s country club? Think again. People choose to become members at HoliMont due to its family-friendly atmosphere just as much as they do for its pristinely groomed terrain and snowmaking abilities. With a strong emphasis on a children-focused ski school and racing programs that teach young members proper skiing/snowboarding techniques - and most importantly, lots of fun - the HoliMont experience is one that can be enjoyed by the entire family. Experience HoliMont. Think of that phrase as a lifestyle suggestion or a word to the wise, if you will. Check out www.holimont.com and follow the club on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, where you will find a continuous stream of content and action-packed photos. But social media isn’t going to give you anywhere close to the true feeling of being at the club on a Saturday morning in January after Ellicottville has just gotten pounded with glorious lake effect snow and the HoliMont Mountain Crew has been working throughout the night to get the slopes in optimal condition. Those are the days you will find out exactly what the edges on your skis are made for or how floating through the glades on a snowboard is as thrilling as any feature in the terrain park. It’s the little particulars that truly make

HoliMont a special place. This club was founded on family values, hard work and a deeprooted love of skiing. And while the club has definitely grown up over the years, the one thing that has never changed is that it offers a one-of-a-kind family atmosphere. HoliMont still has original members (the club was founded in 1962) who are active in the club. Those people can tell you stories about hiking the hills in the off-season in order to remove any large rocks that could possibly cause damage to skis. Or they can convey tales about how the main chalet once doubled as a garage for the first snow groomer purchased by the club. Perhaps you’ll hear about how the chairlifts used to have numbers (i.e. One, Two, Three) for names instead of being called Exhibition Express, Cascade, or Greer. After all the stories are said and done, what you will really find out is that becoming a member at HoliMont is about more than involvement in a club; it basically becomes a home away from home and a vacation that you can enjoy all winter long.

OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

If membership isn’t for you, you need not worry. HoliMont still has plenty for you! Years ago the HoliMont membership decided to open HoliMont to the general public every Monday through Friday (except for the week between Christmas and New Year’s). This change allowed any snowsports enthusiast to experience this special private ski club during its off-peak times. It’s not uncommon for people to use their vacation days (or sick days if you feel that “cold” coming on the morning after a powder dump) to take advantage of HoliMont’s Weekday Experience Pass (10 non-transferable lift tickets and 5 snowsports clinics for as little as $240). Since the weekday traffic is considerably less than the weekend traffic, at times it is almost as if you have the slopes to yourself. Whether you’re a HoliMont Member or not, everyone can look forward to some new additions to the Club this year. Perhaps the most important upgrade to the ski season will be the addition of nine new snow gun tower locations on Exhibition Express. The reason for this addition is to make it possible to get the main area of HoliMont open early on in the season. And for you terrain park enthusiasts, the Park Crew is planning on having a couple new items in the park that should leave you pretty stoked. For now, that’s everything we’ve got. See you on the slopes soon!

OPENING THIS SEASON

Stop by the Slopeside shop or the Gear Up Mountain Shop at some point this season and you’ll undoubtedly come across HoliMont’s newest full-time employee. After over a decade of running Sliders Snowboard Shop in Colden, NY, Greg Culver will be bringing his knowledge and love of the ski industry to HoliMont. As HoliMont’s new shop manager, Culver will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of on-site retail, rental equipment, and gear tuning. Perhaps more importantly, he will be tasked with bringing a fresh perspective to the two shops and maximizing the potential that they have to benefit HoliMont members and guests. Culver comes to HoliMont with an extensive and diverse history in the ski industry. After growing up skiing and then later snowboarding on the slopes of Kissing Bridge, he started working as a nighttime lift attendant during the 1992 ski season. After two seasons of swinging chairs, he transitioned over to the KB snowsports school in order to get out on snow more and share his love of being on snow with others. In 1999 Culver attended an American Association of Snowboard Instructors’ (AASI) certification clinic at HoliMont where he attained his Level I certification, and from that point on he knew that the ski industry was where he wanted to be. “I had a great job and had worked my way up the corporate ladder a bit and was living quite comfortably,” Culver stated. “But I always felt like I wanted to do something else and the appeal of combining a business with my passion seemed like an exciting opportunity.” That mindset eventually led Culver to open Sliders Snowboard Shop in Colden, NY, where he spread the good gospel of the snowboarding lifestyle to every patron who walked through his doors. Sadly, after many years of good times in the shop and on the slopes (why own a snowboard shop if you don’t make some time to test the product?), Culver was forced to close up shop at Sliders before the start of last season. And just like that, his future in the ski industry was up in the air. Culver took his newfound open schedule as an opportunity to catch up on lost time out on the slopes of Holiday Valley where he spent last season working full-time in the snowsports school. “Getting on snow full-time last year was great,” said Culver. “My body was pretty battered by the end of the season but it was good fun. I really enjoyed the customer service and interaction aspect. I love winter and the cold temps. Granted, we had some pretty nasty cold days, but with the right gear and a few more warm-up breaks, you could find some great sliding conditions.”

VACATION

sales&rentals

Alas, when the snow melted off the slopes, Culver went back to the drawing board to evaluate his future and whether or not snow sports was going to be a part of it. Given the fact that he was pretty set on continuing to live in the Western New York area, he realized that his options were somewhat limited. That is, until he saw the shop manager opening at HoliMont. “After trying to find my spot in the WNY snow biz for a while,” Culver said, “I thought HoliMont could be an opportunity to find a new home, not just a job.” As soon as he secured the job, Culver, who prides himself on his attention to detail and structure, immediately got to work revamping both shops and familiarizing himself with the inventory. “My goal with Slopeside is to offer cool products at reasonable prices and keep the ‘got to have’ items stocked,” Culver said. He went on to state that “this year will give me a chance to get a finger on the pulse of the HoliMont customer. I want to find out what they need and want. “ For those already familiar with the shop, Culver said that moving forward he would like to bring in a few new softgood brands to replace some of the less popular sellers. He’s looking to bring more Burton apparel in and is currently looking at least one new ski line. Additionally, he envisions a cool selection of HoliMont branded items. On the rental and tuning side of things, Culver has similar plans. He stated, “Gear-Up’s focus will be on fast and efficient customer service. I’d like to continue to work with local shops and offer demos of the latest and greatest gear. In the Tune-Up shop I would like to improve turnaround time and efficiency. I’m kind of a neat freak so everything is getting reorganized and cleaned.” He finished by saying that he would also be looking to eventually update some of the equipment in the shop and ideally will be offing more ski race products and accessories. Given that the 2015-16 ski season is right around the corner, Culver has definitely had to hit the ground running in order to acclimate himself to his new path in life. But since it’s a trail that he has more or less walked alongside for years now, there is little doubt that he has the aptitude to do the job well. So make sure you stop by both Slopeside and Gear Up this season to check out the changes. You might just find some unique items that you didn’t even know you needed.

7 Ways to Optimize Your SKIING Experience By Kristina Barlow, N.D.

HEAT UP YOUR INTERNAL FIRE

Both Farmer’s Almanacs are predicting an even colder ski season than the past two winters here in WNY! So … in addition to buying warmer ski gear, turn up the heat in your internal furnace with Botanical Medicine. Herbs, categorized according to their medicinal properties, can have warming effects on the body. Chinese Mineral Chi Tonic is a liquid combination of Chinese herbs offering 70 trace minerals in a colloidal form. It was designed to balance blood, chi and all five of the Chinese elements. It helps the adrenal glands to function optimally and is great for fatigue, chronic illnesses and autoimmune disorders. Take one ounce 1-2 times/day. This tonic is EXCELLENT for increasing energy and warming the body. Stop into Nature’s Remedy and Buy a Shot for $1.50. Capsicum AKA chili peppers, green peppers, red peppers, bell peppers or paprika is native to the Americas. Capsicum increases circulation to every area of the body that it contacts both internally and externally. It also strengthens the heartbeat, helps digestion and improves overall health. Capsicum is considered a “cure-all” herb and is GREAT for the winter months by warming the body, preventing infections and increasing the body’s vital force. Take 2 capsules with food as needed. One capsule can also be opened and emptied into the mouth every hour. Add one capsule to water for a gargle-and-swallow solution used for sore throats. Capsicum can also be sprinkled onto cuts and wounds to stop bleeding or added to gloves and socks for the prevention of frostbite (in small amounts). Sold in capsule and bulk forms. Ginger is great for stimulation of digestive enzymes, nausea, vomiting, flu, colds and chills. In herbal combinations, Ginger helps to transport other ingredients to the abdominal and pelvic areas. Take two capsules as needed to keep the body warmed up while also preventing winter colds and flu infections. Ginger is also great as a tea.

PAIN, INFLAMMATION AND BRUISING

CranioSacral Therapy has its roots in osteopathic medicine since the early 1900’s. The craniosacral rhythm, or the Breath of Life, can be sensed through this light touch therapy. As the energy from the practitioner’s hands interacts with the energy in the body, connective tissue is relaxed allowing energy to flow freely and releasing restrictions to the body’s extraordinary healing powers. Excellent for spinal cord injuries, car accidents, injuries, anxiety, stress and many more diseases. This therapy is combined with Authentic Touch (Essential Oils applied to the spine and brain stem) and takes one hour. Mention this article and receive $25 OFF! Arnica 200C is a homeopathic remedy for pain, inflammation and bruising. Upon initial injury, take one dose every 15 minutes. Then take only as needed. Personally, my greatest results with this remedy were seen when I sprained my ankle last year. I took one dose every 15 minutes for one day followed by one dose every hour for another day and experienced 90% decrease in pain, inflammation and bruising. Arnica is effective and safe to take for any age and with other pain medications. Curcumin BP is a formula that combines the extract of curcumin (a pigment from the Indian spice, turmeric) with black pepper that aids the effectiveness of curcumin. Each capsule contains 550mg of turmeric extract that is 95% curcuminoids. This is an excellent anti-inflammatory for injuries and arthritis as well as a support for liver detoxification and digestive disorders (including heartburn, gastritis, dyspepsia, ulcers and gallstones). It is also a powerful antioxidant and has a positive action on the brain and nervous system. For pain and inflammation, take 2 capsules as needed. It is better absorbed when taken with omega 3 essential fatty acids.

Kristina C. Barlow, N.D., is a naturopathic doctor and craniosacral therapist practicing in WNY and Connecticut, specializing in mental and emotional health, neurological challenges, musculoskeletal dysfunctions and detoxification. For more information or to make an appointment for a consultation, contact Kristina directly at 716-353-0786, email her at drbarlow@naturopathicpartners.com or stop into Nature’s Remedy, located at 26 Monroe Street, Ellicottville, NY phone 716-699-4372. You can find Nature’s Remedy on the web at natures-remedy.net.

THE HANGOVER CURE

Liquid Chlorophyll is derived from alfalfa and flavored with natural spearmint. One ounce added to water daily will increase energy, prevent and treat hangovers, improve oxygen uptake in the blood, build and cleanse the blood, and reduce body odors.

NEED MORE ENERGY?

Solstic Energy + Solstic Cardio are powders that are added to water for alternative and healthy energy drinks. Solstic Energy contains B vitamins, guarana (a natural source of caffeine), green tea and ginseng. Solstic Cardio is a combination of D3 and amino acids, especially l-arginine, for increased blood vessel dilation. This allows blood to flow more freely to the muscles for improved athletic performance and to the heart for improved cardiovascular function. Add ½ packet of Solstic Cardio and one packet of Solstic Energy to 20 ounces of water one hour before athletic activity.

Naturopathic doctors are not PCPs, so always consult with your doctor for your health care needs. HANGRY? SHAKE IT UP!

Love and Peas or Nature’s Harvest are both vegan, organic and non-GMO pea protein powders including gluten-free grains, beans, vegetables and fruit. The original Love and Peas contains fructose (from fruit) but our NEW Love and Peas is sweetened with Stevia and Monk Fruit resulting in zero grams of sugar while maintaining the same great taste. Add 2 scoops of any protein to water for a quick grab and go “meal”. Or add 2 scoops to almond, coconut, flax or hemp milk and frozen mangoes or berries and blend!

AVOID DEHYDRATION

Solstic Revive is another powder to be added to water as a “Gatorade-type” replacement. It helps to replenish electrolytes after exercise - calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium. Drink before, during and after physical activity. Solstic Revive is great for energy, stress, dehydration and malnutrition due to vomiting or diarrhea. The added glucosamine will help bones and joints to be more resilient to stress.

SINUS AND LUNG SUPPORT

Tei fu Oil can be used in a diffuser, under the nose, on the tongue, throat or chest for a sinus and lung “opener”, allowing the sinuses to drain and the lungs to breathe freely. Vitamin D3 as an oil emulsion can be taken daily to improve low D3 levels, to improve the immune system and prevent infections, especially when brought on by cold weather. Probiotic 11 is a combination of 11 strains of good bacteria to build the body’s microbiome for prevention of colds and flu. Take before bed and with breakfast for best effects. Elderberry D3fense is a combination of D3, elderberry fruit, echinacea, willow bark, royal jelly and olive leaf extract. Offered in capsule and soft chew forms, this product has proven to be effective for both adults and children.

Ellicottville, NY is known for its picturesque wintertime fun. Each year the charming downtown streets improve to include more and more unique shops and restaurants for buying gifts, sampling tasty foods, and taking home the perfect souvenir. Snowed-In has tracked down the best-of-the-best to offer you a guided tour of what to seek and where. We’ve also included a few must-visit shops located outside of Ellicottville that you’ll definitely want to visit during your next shopping adventure. A TOUCH OF ELLICOTTVILLE

AMERI-CAN

Your one-stop-shop for Ellicottville-themed merchandise and other unique gifts - be it sweatshirts, stickers, belt buckles, ski and snowboard photo frames, handcrafted pottery, or two of its best-selling items: personalized vintage wooden signs that you can customize for your ski chalet walls, and animal-faced t-shirts featuring fun-loving creatures such as rasta lion, gorilla, puppy, eagle, cow and one of winter’s favorites, “Powder Pig” - available in kid and adult sizes.

New on the scene, this truly unique shop captures a delightful mix of functional, fun clothing and accessories “Proudly” made in the U.S.A. or Canada! Browse an eclectic collection of works from local artists - oil paintings, Giclee and watercolor prints, photography, pottery and whimsical “Critters,” stone sculptures and many creative décor ideas, as well as antiques and repurposed/recycled items! Things will always be changing to keep your curiosity peaked!

ANEW BEGINNING MASSAGE & SPA

AVA GRACE FASHIONS

After hitting the slopes, make time to melt. Come in this fall for their Spiced Cider Facial Special (featuring a beautiful medley of fall scents). Apple enzymes have great anti-oxidants and anti-aging properties as the mask soothes inflammation and reveals healthy, nourished skin.

A familiar face on the Ellicottville fashion scene, Jessica Maynard-Gilbert recently launched this online store which primarily sells women’s wear – dresses, tops, leggings, lingerie, jewelry, bags and shoes, but it also offers basic men essentials. With a passion towards all things ‘green’ and the commitment of offering comfortable, durable and sustainable clothing made in the U.S.A., Jessica strives to find brands that combine both. Owner Laura Solly travels regularly to New Mexico and the likes to seek out the best of the best in clothing, footwear and accessories for women, men and children. From cowboy hats and boots to Pendleton wool blankets, to belts, bags, jewelry and houseware with southwestern flair, you’ll be hard-pressed to walk out of the store empty-handed.

It was owner Shannon Carscallen’s vision (back in 2003 when she opened this store) to offer unique and enjoyable wines at all price points. Each wine here is tested and approved before it gets stocked on the shelves, so you know it’s good! The store specializes in carrying California, Italian and French selections. Snag a few bottles to take back to your condo or hotel room ... or call in with your order – they deliver inside the village of Ellicottville.

ELLICOTTVILLE GIFT CARD

ELLICOTTVILLE OASIS SPA

Here’s a great option to give as a gift for any occasion – be it birthday, holiday, or a “thank goodness ski season is almost here!” celebration! This “any day” gift is redeemable at nearly 50 local businesses and gives the recipient the flexibility to use it for lodging, dining out, retail purchases or even ski lift tickets. This charming historical home in the heart of the village has been transformed into an “Oasis” of tranquility, relaxation and wellness. Massage Therapy is offered for both individuals and couples, along with mani’s, pedi’s, facials, body wraps and waxing. Ask about their Girlfriends “BFF” package! The spa also features the coveted “Osmosis Pur Skincare” line and the very popular “Farmhouse Fresh” product line to protect your skin from winter’s frigid temps.

ELLICOTTVILLE SALT CAVE

GADO GADO

Revitalize your body and your well-being! Salt caves are built from pink Himalayan salt imported from Europe, which are said to provide certain properties that aid in relief from respiratory ailments (asthma, allergies), skin problems (acne, dry skin), and other common conditions. This alternative, holistic approach lasts 45 minutes, and clients are fully dressed during their session. Other available services include halotherapy, sauna, massage and reiki.

A trip to Gado Gado will fill your closet (and your living space) with flair and an eclectic sense of style. You could spend an entire afternoon picking out and trying on all the worldly and stylish clothing here. Browse through their selection of plush scarves, fashionable belts and other attractive accessories to accent any outfit. The store also carries a great selection of unique home décor items – from comfy throw pillows to exotic wall hangings, ornate candles and more!

HAMPSHIRE MILLS

HV MOUNTAIN SHOPS

Suit up for winter’s grip with Columbia Sportswear, Killtec jackets, long underwear, hats, gloves, cozy Acorn slippers, Smartwool and Wigwam socks, and footwear from Merrell, Eastland, and Minnetonka. Gifts for all ages! – Melissa & Doug toys, jams and jellies, essential oils, incense and sage, home decor and hundreds of cookie cutters! Also, Native American pottery, jewelry and locally-made dream catchers. Clip out the ad on page A-22 for 20% off one item.

If there’s anything you forgot to pack for your Ellicottville ski trip, the Holiday Valley Mountain Shops have you covered. They offer a great selection of outerwear, apre ski wear, hats, helmets, goggles and more - for moms, dads and kids. With two locations (next to the main Lodge and inside Yodeler Lodge), you can bet both shops will be chock full of ski and snowboard goodies (including Holiday Valley logo items) once the season rolls around.

MAGER MOUNTAIN ALPACAS

NATURE’S REMEDY

One of the area’s best kept secrets for fashionable, functional fur. The farm’s So Soft Gift Shop boasts the softness of alpaca in all forms – sweaters, ponchos, capes, scarves, hats, headbands and more. You’ll love the plush feeling of an alpaca rug under your toes … speaking of toes, one of their biggest sellers – socks! Alpaca socks are made of alpaca/merino wool and are favored by skiers and snowboarders for keeping their feet warm and dry.

A natural health and organic foods market, Nature’s Remedy is an independent distributor of Nature’s Sunshine products. From herbs and vitamins to detox and cleansing to weight loss, bath and body, aromatherapy, organic and gluten free foods and produce, teas and more, this store will educate you on the prevention of illness and sustained wellness through a holistic approach. Stop in and ask about the line of essential oils they carry and all the benefits that come with it!

OLDE SCHOOLHOUSE VILLAGE SHOPPES

SIMPLY NATURAL ALPACAS

Enjoy a truly a unique shopping experience in an 8,000 sq. ft. refurbished schoolhouse with over 100 local artisans creating something for every décor - Shabby Chic, Country Primitive, Western, Northwest Cabin, and Farmhouse Kitchen. You’ll find reclaimed and reproduction furniture, antiques, lighting florals, rugs, wall art, tableware, linens, candles, jewelry, toys and more. Mark your calendar for their Christmas Open House, Saturday, Nov. 21.

Alpaca is softer, stronger and more durable than wool, is hypoallergenic and anti-microbial! Because of its hollow fiber, alpaca draws moisture away from your body, keeping you comfortable and dry. The gift shop carries a large selection of products to cover you from head to toe. Visit the new crias (babies) and see how the fiber is processed in their fleece room. They even have alpacas for sale if you’re interested in starting up your own alpaca farm.

Interview with: TREY CLAUSS Store Manager Interview with: KIMBERLY READING Owner

Let’s get right to the good stuff. What are some of the latest and greatest hardgoods that MSG is excited about bringing in this season? The Nordica Enforcer is back! This is one of the greatest all-mountain skis ever built. The new Nordica Enforcer sports a new 100mm waist for versatility, a full wood core sandwiched between two sheets of metal for power and stability at speed, and a blunt nosed tip to blast through the powder and crud. Head has a great new line of skis called the Monster Series. These skis feature Graphene Sandwich Cap Construction. (FYI: Graphene is the thinnest and lightest element ever discovered by mankind. It is also the strongest material on the planet, stronger than diamond and 300 times stronger than steel, all in the thickness of one atom.) You can find the Head Monster 88 on our skis wall … a tough, agile and versatile on-piste ski that rides like a wide race ski. In the snowboard world we are happy to be carrying the K2 Cool Bean. The Cool Bean represents a shift in volume and a shift in mindset. Its width translates to unlimited laydown room when carving groomers and surfy float and glide in the powder. We are pumped to add Union Bindings and Thirty Two Boots to our line-up this season. Union Bindings feature a lifetime warranty on the baseplates and heelcups, and are made with DuPont plastics. With a wide variety of colors and models there is something for everyone from your basic rider to your high-end expert. Thirty Two boots feature heat moldable liners made with Intuition Ultralon foam. Guaranteed to make them fit great right out of the box. And your softgoods ... This year we expanded our collection of outerwear and accessories for kids. We couldn’t help ourselves ... there was just too much good stuff to choose from. Jackets, pants, insulators, hoodies, base layers, helmets, goggles, gloves and packs. What stands out? Fun pops of color and patterning, impactful prints and color blocks and full range of kid friendly features like dependable waterproofing, breathability and rugged fabrics. You’ve been bringing in a fresh variety of lifestyle wear and Ellicottville branded apparel. What’s new and exciting on the racks and in the bins this fall / winter? We carry a fun and trendy selection of lifestyle wear ... more this season than ever before! Lots of sweaters, cashmere wraps, casual jackets, shirts and tops, dresses, skirts, tights, hats, scarves, and sporty bags, etc. - perfect après ski and resort wear. We’ve been focusing on brands making philanthropic efforts and giving back to a variety of charitable alliances. Alp n’ Rock shirts are designed with an edgy, chic après ski aesthetic and are simply irresistible. Alp-n-Rock donates up to 10% of profits to “Room to Read” - an organization that finances education for girls in developing countries, providing the lifelong gift of an education. The Home T - as seen on ABC’s Shark Tank, helps you show off your home state pride, stylishly. What makes the Home T special is that the company donates 10% of their profits to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, specifically research. Merchandise that matters! And not to leave out the techie … can you hit on some of your top tech products? The GoPro HERO4 Session packs the power of GoPro into its smallest, lightest, most convenient camera yet, featuring a rugged and waterproof design, easy one-button control, 1080p60 video and 8MP photos. It is 50% smaller and 40% lighter than the previous GoPRo Hero4! The Chips from Outdoor Technology are also new to the store this year. Chips are Bluetooth wireless audio drop-ins for helmets that are simple to use, connect easily to any Bluetooth enabled device and are compatible with any helmet with an audio enabled liner. Demos, seasonal equipment leasing … It can be challenging to choose the right equipment that suits your level and style preference. We demo almost all of the high-end skis on our wall and usually in more than one size. With a greater variety to choose from, the better the chance our customers will find the proper ski. We also offer daily ski and snowboard rentals. This year we have added the “performance rental” to our fleet which gives customers the opportunity to upgrade to an all mountain ski designed for hardpack, groomers and bumps. Our leasing program is very popular. It’s an affordable way to outfit kids who are new to skiing and snowboarding and for kids who are growing like weeds. We offer both new and used ski and snowboard equipment starting at $99.

What’s cool in the shop this season? (besides the crew) We are entering our 16th year this season, and we couldn’t be more excited for what winter has to offer! Being open year round has its benefits, but the biggest joy we get is switching from summer to winter. Getting out all the new product is like Christmas! What’s cool? We carry ‘Ski The East’ branded clothing and fun accessories. Based solely on the east coast, “Born from Ice” is one of their many catch phrases that they use on a variety of tees, long sleeves, and hoodies. They’ve expanded their line this year and so we have expanded our selection. We sold every last bit last season, so be sure to get in here early! We also bought these really funny one-piece suits from England called Willyfinder … look out for Wild Willy! Check ‘em out at www.willyfinder.com. Word has it your boot fitter has seen a lot of feet … Our boot fitter Tim Cummiskey has the knack for fitting a good ski boot; he’s been doing it for 30 years! He has what we call the “boot room” upstairs, kinda like the Dr.’s office. There, he’ll put you in the “big chair” and figure out why your feet hurt. Anywhere from custom footbeds, stance alignment, stretching, and anything else you can do to a ski boot, he’s your guy! Care to indulge in some of the other fine services you offer? The City Garage is a full service ski shop, much like the ode we made to our namesake that was a GMC dealership. The shop area in the back of the store is fully equipped with Wintersteiger ski tuning equipment. We can sharpen, wax, stone grind, and fill up your tires too! We also offer a full line of “high performance” demo skis, a try before you buy kinda deal. Not a skier? Get out and enjoy Ellicottville on a pair of our Atlas snowshoe rentals. What are a few accessories you carry that you would recommend every skier add to their gear bag? The must-have accessory for the gear bag is the bag itself! Transpack has brought out the best heated boot bag money can buy. For all the times you’ve left your boots in the car overnight, this will be the end all. You can also keep your chili warm for lunch! Any details yet on a pre-season movie premier event? Of course we’ve gotta bring the stoke once again this year! We’ve partnered up with MSP films on their global tour of “Fade to Winter”, to be showcased at The Ellicottville Depot on Saturday Nov. 21, 2015. Stay tuned in on FB for more details. What other events is the C.G. team looking forward to hosting / participating in this year? Throughout the season we try to get out of the shop and connect with our customers (and hopefully get some new ones!) Holiday Valley will host the annual Consumer Demo Day, Dec. 19. The CG crew will be on-hand guiding skiers to our company reps. In the spring of ‘16 we put on our annual Telestock at HV. Always the last Friday in February (26th) at the Champagne Sundeck. Free telemark rentals and a load of good times! Once again, stay tuned in on FB and Instagram for more events as they pop up! On the flip side, The City Garage offers one of the coolest, most unique palettes of retail from a ski shop during the off-season. Can you enlighten us on some of your summer lines? We have been open year round since day one. Putting a specific vibe on Ellicottville in the summer has been an ongoing affair. We’ve tried mostly everything, so far it seems like the theme of “summer fun” sticks the best. Anywhere from camping / glamping supplies, pie irons, hammocks, stand up paddle boards, footwear, and clothing. Trying to connect with the majority of people is our #1! One last comment to our readers ... Have a great winter and we’ll see ya in the lift line!

Interview with: BOB KNAB Rider, Owner, Operator

Interview with: JAY MOWREY Manager

What’s hot this season at Phatman? Farmer’s Almanac is predicting another wicked cold winter, so I’m going to say our selection of Burton, ThirtyTwo and Volcom outerwear is going to be hot! Our bangin’ boards of this season will be the Burton Process Centerfold line-up. These boards are surely to make ‘em drool with the latest in pinup-worthy freestyle performance. Twin shape, camber profile and some sensual top graphics make for one of the most enjoyable rides of the season. Other “must-mention” items in-store ... (accessories, other cool product, etc.) The new line of Celtek gloves, facemasks and accessories are sure to impress this year. Their classic ‘Bitten By A Mitten’ mitten is offering graphics inspired by Pink Floyd, Santa Cruz skateboards and artist Don Pendleton. Additionally, CAPiTA came together with Peter Line for a one-of-a-kind board inspired by his upcoming documentary from Mack Dawg being released this fall. The Peter Line Rainbow 153 snowboard will be available in limited quantities at the shop, so get one before they’re gone! We are also proud to offer an excellent selection of Vans Snowboard boots this year. We have the tried and trusted Hi-Standard, the classic V-66 for all-purpose riding, and hybrid laced Implant. We’re really stoked on all of our products we’re carrying but these are just some of the ones that we are especially excited for. Phatman caters to every rider and what his or her needs and wants are, so our selection of boards, boots, bindings, outerwear and accessories is pretty deep. Last but not least, we are carrying NOW bindings for the first time. These skateboard inspired bindings are built with Skate-Tech technology, which means they are constructed almost like a skateboard truck - kingpin, hanger and bushing included. It takes the energy from your foot and transfers it easily to the edges of your board, making for easier turns, a comfier ride, and less pressure on your feet. These bindings are gamechangers and we’re really thrilled to have them in the shop this year. Not only do you embrace winter, your summer product is pretty stellar too ... can you give us a quick rundown of the skate brands and other summertime must-have items? Yeah, obviously with being such a big store and having a lot of space, we carry a ton of skateboard products. We carry both big and small companies but a few notable deck brands that we are proud to have are Anti-Hero, Creature, Politic, Krooked, Welcome, DGK, Surprise, and Toy Machine. As for our shoe wall, we offer an extensive selection of Vans, Emerica, Lakai, Nike SB, Adidas and Huf, which we will be getting in soon. Our shoe wall has over 100 styles to choose from, so there’s something for everyone. Other brands we carry include Independent, Thunder, Venture, Spitfire, OJ Wheels, Bones, Ricta, Fourstar, Altamont, Volcom and a ton more. I also wanted to mention our new in-store Disc Golf section, properly named Phatman Disc Supply. We started carrying Disc Golf equipment last year and have since become one of the largest Disc Golf Pro Shops in the area. It’s pretty incredible how popular the sport has become in the past few years, so we took notice and began selling Disc Golf discs, bags and accessories. It’s a really fun way to get outdoors, enjoy a few cold ones, and relax. It’s also free and not nearly as frustrating as regular golf. Phatman has been a strong backer of the Alix Rice Peacepark Foundation since day one. For our readers who aren’t familiar, can you explain what it is? The Foundation was created to raise funds and construct a memorial concrete skate park in remembrance of Alix Rice, a skater who was struck and killed in a hit-and-run by a drunk driver. The Foundation is finalizing the park plans and construction at The Northtown Center is planned for Spring 2016. We’re counting down the days until it’s completed. Any cool events in the works for this fall / winter season that Phatman will be hosting that we should keep our eyes and ears open for? Definitely, on Friday, Oct. 16, we will be hosting a movie premiere and party for ThirtyTwo’s “2032” film. We will be grilling up food, having a game of SKATE in the parking lot and doing some giveaways too. On Nov. 14, join us at Kissing Bridge for our annual Phatman Mucho Jib Jam (check out “Mucho Jib Jam” on YouTube to see what it’s all about). On Jan. 16, hop on our Shred Bus to Kissing Bridge for the Late Night Great Night session where you can ride until 1am. Stay tuned for more events … we’re always thinking of new ideas.

On our main floor, we have all of our clothing and accessories to keep each member of the family warm, comfortable, and safe while out on the hill. We stock lots of attractive après clothing and footwear options as well as a full offering of Ellicottville t-shirts, sweatshirts and drinkware. Come check out our expanded offerings of clothing brands and accessories! We recently completed a redesign of our basement to offer the best service for all of our seasonal lease, daily rental and tuning needs for our families. Our service suite is able to restore your equipment back to its original glory with our state-of-the-art Wintersteiger array of tuning machines operated by factory trained technicians. Let us in on your top product picks for this season … We are very excited for Icelantic’s brand new ski for this year – the Pioneer! This is Icelantic’s true all-mountain ski: it is lightweight with camber underfoot and a tapered early rise tip and tail. The Pioneer will easily perform in all conditions, so it will easily become your #1 go-to ski. Back again this year is Rome SDS and we could not be more stoked. We love Rome’s progressive thinking and designs because they are the results of direct feedback from riders. This means designed for riders by riders! For example, come try on a pair of Rome Libertine boots and experience their renowned F.I.T. (Foot Impression Technology) – it’s a custom fit out of the box for your feet! How about casual wear ... what’s your favorite piece hitting the rack this fall? We all love our Laundromat sweater! They are prefect for fall – woolen products designed in Canada and hand knitted in Nepal. They are a proud member of the Fair Trade Federation, which ensures all parties are paid fair wages and artisans are allowed to maintain their cultural integrity and traditional lifestyle. Along with snow sports equipment and clothing, you also carry an array of EVLbranded merchandise. Can you give us a glimpse of some of these items you’ve got stocked on shelves? We offer lots of fun things to decorate chalets with or to grab as gifts … we have clothing: t-shirts, sweatshirts, fleeces and jackets; glasswear: shot glasses, wine glasses, flasks and koozies; and the ever popular EVL stickers and magnets. Tell us about your TekScan machine and the custom footbeds you offer … We developed a tandem custom boot fitting system that involves a whole body approach. The first step begins with our Footbalance Custom Insoles; this computerized system analyzes foot shapes and movement. It guides us in building the perfect custom insole for skiing/snowboarding. We also stock insoles for other sports, such as running and walking, or just your everyday casual shoe. The second step involves one of our professionally trained “boot doctors” assisting a customer in picking out the best boot for their needs based on many factors, including their foot shape, ability, budget, etc. After the perfect boot is picked and heat molded, we use our TekScan machine to create the proper body alignment with the boot and the ski. Our machine can guide us with a visual weight distribution picture. We can then make adjustments to the boot to ensure that the ski is properly weighted when the customer is in their boots. Everyone is welcome to stop in for a demo - we have even added two big screen TVs for easier viewing of our boot fitting technologies.

Interview with: JOHN ROUNDS Owner Interview with: SPENCE TIMKEY Director of Marketing & High 5’s

John, welcome back to Ellicottville! What were some of the reasons you decided to come back and reopen Adventure Bound? It’s good to be back! Reopening Adventure Bound as Adventure Bound onthefly was a combination of several factors. The first, was that the space is one of the nicest retail locations available in the Village. You walk around and you see Dina’s, Dekdebruns, Earth Arts, etc. - these are decade type scenarios. So we knew that if we wanted to open, it would be now or never. Secondly, the way Ellicottville has developed into a true four-seasons destination. There’s that really authentic downtown experience, and we’re surrounded by huge metro areas like Toronto, Cleveland, Buffalo and Pittsburgh. There was a certain … desire to keep the family legacy alive as well. What I’ve found over the last couple of months is how profound an impact my family’s store had on so many people. Whether it was them getting their start in the winter or outdoor sports business, going on the Adventure Bound camps or having their boots fit by Chris Rounds, it’s been overwhelming to see. (Some quick background: John’s parents, Chris and Heidi Rounds, owned and operated Adventure Bound through the 1970s and 80s — a full-service ski and outdoors shop.) People really underestimate how much there is to explore in the area. How important is it to be able to give someone that true, outdoor-specific retail experience? What’s great about the shop is that we’re going to appeal to such a broad range of people. There’s that aspirational, outdoor/lifestyle theme that people look for and a lot of people resonate with. When a family comes in, we want to be able to offer something for everyone. You don’t have to be the sky-diving, white-water rafting outdoors person to find something - you can be a very casual outdoors person and find something great. For instance, you don’t have to spend 5 days at Everest to find uses for a Swiss Army knife. You don’t have to be going on a 3-day excursion to drink water from a Klean Kanteen - maybe you’re conscious of your carbon footprint and want to reduce plastic water bottle usage. If your idea of being outdoors is hiking up the hills at Holiday Valley or HoliMont, that’s awesome. So we want to be able to offer those types of people proper footwear, layering, things that will be applicable for everyday use. What’s cool will be that the parent’s eyes will light up when they see the assortment of jackets, SUPs, Osprey brand bags … but then they’ll see what we’ve got for the kids. We’re going to have Klutz, which makes activity-based, hands-on toys. Columbia outerwear and Chaco footwear. It’s going to be an all-encompassing family experience. It sounds like you’re going to have a heavy emphasis on SUPs, including inflatables ... We are. I know that Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) isn’t huge around here as of right now, but it’s one of the fastest growing sports in the country. So we’re going to offer introductions to the sport, including demos and group outings. We’re going to have a room dedicated to SUPs. The industry has evolved and progressed so much over the past couple of seasons, and the inflatable boards are really cool because you don’t need a roof rack, truck or trailer (although we will have Yakima racks!) You can throw it in your sedan, drive to the spot you want to paddle at and inflate it on the spot. And there are so many great places to paddleboard around here! What’s unique about Ellicottville that you haven’t seen elsewhere? What a special place this is. Whether you’re on a river, lake, snowshoes, snowboard, etc., you can experience four truly different seasons here. But unlike other places, Ellicottville backs it up with great lodging, dining and the vibe. Most individuals or families that vacation are looking for that diversity, which Ellicottville offers. Dad can go golf, mom can go shopping, the kids can go to HV’s Adventure Park then all reconvene for a nice dinner. And you’re partnering with The Boardroom … Mike Timkey (of The Boardroom) worked for my parents at the original Adventure Bound. The retail space is so big, I knew I couldn’t fill it with just my stuff. So I approached Mike to see if he’d be interested in opening a downtown location. It’s going to make for a really cool dynamic. When people are walking by the windows, and they see MSR, or Osprey, or Oakley, or GoPro, they’re going to come in and see two completely different shops - but two that have the same attitude towards customer service and providing that great experience.

What’s new this year at The Boardoom? Oh man, where to start! So many awesome things going down this year. The one we’re most excited about is the opening of a 2nd storefront location called The Boardroom on Main, right in the heart of the Village of Ellicottville. We partnered with John Rounds (who opened Adventure Bound onthefly) and took the downstairs of the old Kazoo II building. It’s an incredible space, and we’re so excited to have a presence in town. To assist us with our new endeavor, we’ve expanded our Boardroom family. Local kids Tyler Burns and Kelsey Koebel will be helping us at the new store, while Bobby ‘The Wind’ Sawicki is an absolute hurricane of positive vibes and hustle in the rental room. We did away with the PowderRoom and dedicated that room to helmets, goggles and accessories. You won’t find a better selection in WNY. If you’ve ever come to us for daily ski or snowboard rentals, you know how rocking our rental room gets. (My personal favorite is when little kids go nuts when the beagles come in). So the rental room got a facelift (new floor, fresh paint, etc.) and we’ve almost completely replaced our entire rental fleet with brand-new Salomon gear. Never Summer took over production for Sims Snowboards, so we’re bringing those in. Oh, and how could we forgot? Samantha (my sister) and her fiancee just got a beagle puppy named Douglas, and he’ll be at The Boardroom often. THREE BEAGLES. It’s going to be hilarious. We know you put a heavy emphasis on junior gear, including seasonal snowboard rentals. Indulge. In the past couple of seasons, snowboarding as a whole has kind of declined in participation. If we can get kids stoked on snowboarding early on, then we’ve got them hooked for life. Our seasonal snowboard rental program is out of this world - it’s all brand-new (or close to) gear from Burton, Salomon, Lib Tech and Roxy. We’ve got boots with Boa Technology from all brands, so mom and dad aren’t occupied with tying the little ones’ boots. Not to mention, Burton did collaborations with Marvel Comics and Frozen, and we’ve got the full complement of boards, jackets, gloves and backpacks. You said you’re the go-to spot for helmets and goggles. What can people expect when they come in? For starters, it’s all about the fit. A helmet won’t do much good if it doesn’t fit properly! And we know that the ‘fire’ lens from Oakley is super cool looking, but if you’re primarily riding at night, then you’ll be wasting your money. So it’s knowing the product, knowing our environment / customer and giving you the best bang for your buck. We’ve got something for everyone - fit, color, style, etc. If you’re dropping $200+ on a pair of quick-change lens goggles, we’re going to make sure you know exactly how to change that lens quickly and properly. Correct us if we’re wrong, but this is The Boardroom’s 32nd year in business. What are the things you’ve done to stay successful? It’s super cliche to say this, but it starts with leadership. My parents are here almost every day, and that ensures that the ship is being run the way they want it to be run. It comes down to the experience our customers have when they come in. Whether it’s having a beagle climb into your lap or getting educated on snowboards, the entire experience - top to bottom should be fun. Snowboarding and snowsports are about having the best time of your life. So that’s the attitude we bring to the shop - let’s have some fun with it. How about some brands you’ve got coming in that you’re super stoked on? We brought Burton back in last year, which is very rad, because they’re constantly pushing the envelope of product innovation. We’ve got the full complement of bindings, including the Genesis, Malavita, Cartel and Lexa (and many more.) Salomon continues to amaze us with how good their boots fit year-in and year-out. Lib Tech, as always, brings us some of the best (and hand-built in the USA!) snowboards in the industry. GoPro just came out with a new, ultra-small camera called the Session - so we’ll have that, and everything you need to buy it and use it right away at the hill.

Charismatic bartenders, a pool table on both levels, and daily specials from the kitchen await your visit. Serving lunch Tuesday-Saturday; dinner Friday and Saturday. MYERS STEAKHOUSE & INN

SILVER FOX STEAKHOUSE

Bring your tastebuds to the party with Myers’ fabulous steaks, fresh seafood, comfort food choices and fresh salads. Myers is a truly unique and historical location just minutes south of Ellicottville. The current owners are only the 4th to carry the tradition of good food in a cozy lodge atmosphere that has been a part of the Salamanca area for 120+ years. SNOWED-IN Menu Picks: Their steaks are coated with the chef’s signature rub and fire-grilled to order … would you believe us if we told you that no steak sauce is required? It’s true! And if you’re trying to take the healthy route, there’s never been a better excuse to “have your steak (I mean salad) and eat it too” … Myers Famous Steakhouse Salad plates fresh romance and iceberg with tomatoes, cucumbers and onion, then topped with a 6 oz. steak, shredded Parmesan and homemade buttermilk onion rings … heaven!

Dubbed Ellicottville’s original steakhouse, the Silver Fox has held a long-standing reputation as one of the most comfortable and elegant restaurants in the village. Nightly chef specials, some of the best cuts of meat around, paired with an extensive wine list make this a top choice for those in search of a finer dining experience. The Silver Fox is also known for its famous Martini Club, which takes place every Friday evening at 5pm - traditional and signature martinis paired with complimentary appetizers for the bar crowd to enjoy. SNOWED-IN Menu Picks: We’d be kidding ourselves if we left off sampling one of their martinis (if you’re of age of course), which are the perfect night-cap to a day on the slopes. We’re also big fans of their steak specials, as well as the wasabi tuna - pan seared encrusted with wasabi, black and white sesame seeds and enhanced with spicy sesame sauce ... mmmm!

VILLAGGIO

WHOLESOME HIDEAWAY

For those who haven’t made the trip back to Ellicottville since the last snowfall, boy are you in for a treat during your next visit! Changes have been occurring throughout the downtown business district – one that we’re sure you (and your tastebuds) will be pleased with. Ellicottville has shown a great, warm embrace for the Pitillo family, who have been hard at work the past couple of months preparing for their newest endeavor, Villaggio, housed in the building formerly occupied by The Barn Restaurant. Owner Nick Pitillo and crew are bringing the family’s strong Italian roots to the table, as Villaggio will offer relaxed Italian dining using recipes that have been handed down from Pitillo’s own mom and pop. Set to open this fall, you can bet Villaggio will be a hot spot come ski season, as Nick is working towards that perfect apres atmosphere - open dining, bars on both floors, ski movies cycling through on the big screens, and more than enough food and drink to keep the vibe alive.

A new addition to the culinary landscape, this carryout cafe offers the community a healthy platform for fresh, local and organic on-the-go options. It is the mission of owner, Brittany Lowry, to encourage and educate others when it comes to a clean alternative way of eating. The menu, which changes monthly, consists of all organic, gluten-free, non-dairy ingredients. SNOWED-IN Menu Picks: Grab a Breakfast Bowl on your way to the slopes - steel cut oats with fresh and local fruit, walnuts, raisins and unsweetened coconut. For lunch, the Garden Bowl dishes out quinoa, sweet potato, herb roasted tomato and bell peppers with a side of guacamole. The Mason Jar Salads are a popular grab-and-go option too ... “get your green on!” And wait til you try the Turtle Brownies! View each week’s menu by following Wholesome Hideaway on Facebook.

WILDWOOD GRILL

WINERY OF ELLICOTTVILLE

This historic home, formerly the Elks lodge, has been beautifully restored and is only a 10-minute drive from Holiday Valley. With enough space for a private party plus dining areas and bars on three floors, the Wildwood Grill is the place to be if you’re looking for a delicious meal and some good company. SNOWED-IN Menu Picks: Thursday night’s 55-cent wing night is the most popular special that Wildwood offers. With thirteen different flavors of wings, it’s no wonder locals and visitors flock to the Wildwood when their chicken wing cravings strike. We’re also keen on their Friday night fish fry, available for just $9.95. And don’t forget Happy Hour: $2 draft beers and $2.50 well drinks Tuesday/Wednesday from 4-7pm and Thursday from 4-9pm. Find the full menu on the Wildwood Grill’s website … daily specials, tons of apps to choose from, soups, salads, flavorful burgers, pizza and more!

Details. The smallest details are often the ones that separate the exceptional from the ordinary. Owner Dominic Spicola’s father, Francesco, taught him that making excellent wine requires great care and attention. Making the right adjustments at the right time are crucial to achieving optimal quality. Dominic and his son-in-law, Sam Sheehy, have honed their skills for years, and couldn’t be prouder of the lineup of premium quality wines that the Winery of Ellicottville is offering today. Never mind the pile of medals that their wines have won in competition. Let your tastebuds be the judge. Wine tastings available daily. SNOWED-IN Menu Picks: Traminette: a semi-dry white wine with distinct lime and citrus flavors. Pairs well with spicy foods and Asian cuisine. More of a red wine drinker? Try the Cabernet Franc: look for hints of delicate cherry beneath the lean oak and spicy flavors, and enjoy the smooth finish. Dishes spiced with rosemary, tarragon or sage, such as stews and roasts, pair deliciously!

The “Other” Season

EVL IN GREEN By Pat Morgan

It’s safe to say if you’re reading this publication, you’re well aware of the ski resort prowess Holiday Valley and HoliMont bring to the table. Both are pioneers in their respective categories (public/private resorts), who continue to re-invest in their properties and the community of Ellicottville annually. But, should you find yourself visiting town in the “off-season,” you don’t need to worry about finding something to do. The summer months are very much an “onseason” here in the village and surrounding areas, and here’s proof … One of the most popular attractions bringing people to town these days is Sky High Adventure Park at Holiday Valley, now in its fifth season of operation. Speaking from experience, this park is AWESOME. Priced at just $49, your ticket nets access to 13 different courses that will challenge you both mentally and physically. Not to worry however - the adventure park is well staffed with plenty of enthusiastic attendants who can talk you through any tricky situation, or if you get in a real jam, even assist you back to the ground. Of the 13 courses, you’ll find a well-balanced array of ability levels, similar to your favorite ski resort. From the novice lower level courses to the intimidating sounding “Commando” course, there is truly something for everyone. One of the newer parts of the park, the 3-D Climbing Forest, adds even more aerial activity for the climbing enthusiast. The climbing forest consists of bouldering holds affixed to trees up to 60’ in height and varying difficulty, which can provide a challenge to even the most skilled climber. Rates start at just $17 for this part of the park. Unwind a bit after you tackle the courses with a ride down the fun-for-all-ages mountain coaster, and you’ve covered all your bases. I can guarantee you will leave Sky High exhausted and smiling. Given the popularity of the park, it is highly suggested you call them at 716-699444 to make a reservation. Sticking with the Holiday Valley theme for a moment, the Double Black Diamond golf course can be found at the main base area of Holiday Valley Resort. This par 70, approximately 6,000yard course will challenge even the most polished handicapper. With spectacular views from many of the tee boxes, even if you’re having a heck of a time hitting that little white ball straight (guilty) you will still enjoy yourself. The resort offers packages if you’re looking to stay overnight, and a tee time is always recommended – just call 716-699-2345 or stop into the generously stocked Holiday Valley Golf Shop, where you certainly will be able to make yourself look like a pro, even if your swing isn’t up to “par.” One of the other great secrets of the region is the incredible mountain biking trail system found between Holiday Valley, HoliMont, and the surrounding hilly, forested terrain. Challenging single track mixed with a variety of other terrain are just one of the reasons the IMBA has gone as far as to label the trails in the area “EPIC.” With over 35 miles of trails locally, you’re sure to find something that is up your alley, and you will certainly see why people come from far, far away to hit the trails here. If you’re looking for more info on the trail system, some gear for your ride, or some delicious grub to refuel after your ride, make sure you pop into Bike & Bean in downtown EVL for all the goods. You can also give them a shout at 716-699-2453.

MOUNTAIN BIKING MECCA

Redefining FRESH ...

It’s very rare that something isn’t going on during each of your Ellicottville visits. Along with the notorious array of evolving shops, bars and restaurants, Ellicottville plays host to a slew of festivals and celebrations throughout the “winter waiting period.” Among the largest is the Summer Music Festival, which brings in major recording artists to entertain the masses on a slopeside amphitheater at Holiday Valley. Another personal favorite of mine is the annual Taste of Ellicottville, which gives local restaurants the chance to show off samplings of their staple entrees, or venture into uncharted territory with some new, off-the-wall creation. There is also the Jazz & Blues Festival, Rock n’ Roll Weekend which features killer tunes and an impressive village-wide car show, and of course everyone’s favorite event, Fall Festival, which literally completely transforms Ellicottville into a mass celebration of the approaching winter season. Beer tents, vendors, music, and of course the brilliant fall foliage we look forward to annually can be expected, so put on those party pants and stamp it on your calendar, or click on over to www.ellicottvilleny.com for a complete schedule of the year’s events.
