THE MOST AFFORDABLE STAY IN ELLICOTTVILLE Just minutes from Holiday Valley Walk to downtown
Atlas Snowshoes available at The City Garage, downtown Ellicottville
By Spencer Timkey If you think of Ellicottville activities through the prism of power rankings, the top spot is an easy choice. Holiday Valley and HoliMont remain the tractor beams for bringing in visitors, both repeat and new. You might argue that No. 2 would be a toss-up between dining/nightlife and shopping - each one complements the other well. After that, however, it’s a complete dogfight for activity spots. Underrated and oft-overlooked, snowshoeing is a hidden gem around our area. Advancements in tech and more accessible terrain have made this activity you hated in high school gym class a whole lot better. Ellicottville’s own The City Garage and Adventure Bound onthefly carry brands like Atlas and MSR, which are constantly pushing the envelope on innovation. Imagine this: sliding your foot on a pair of Atlas Stratus snowshoes then locking them down with a twist-to-tighten Boa Wheel (The City Garage, $249.99) and heading out first thing in the morning, when there’s still a couple stars visible. It’s cold out and the snow is deep, so you won’t want to forget to wear your Crocodile Gaiters from Outdoor Research (Adventure Bound, $78.99). When the terrain starts to get tricky, you’ll need some collapsable poles from Atlas (CG, $39.99) but it will all be worth it watching that gorgeous WaY sunrise sipping on your still-hot morning coffee, courtesy of a Wide Vacuum thermos from Kleen Kanteen (AB, $28.99). You can imagine that scenario, or you could go out at night pretending to evade White Walkers (Game of Thrones is the best show on TV. This is not debatable.) Regardless of the company you keep or how wild your imagination runs, the benefits of snowshoeing (fresh air, exercise) should be enough reason to get out and get after it. C
M
The foothills we call home make accessibility incredibly easy, all the while giving you a pretty diverse range of terrain. If you’ve ever hiked in the summertime, you know how beautiful it is. Holiday Valley’s cross-country ski trails are open to snowshoers (but they ask that you please remain to the side, to not disrupt the tracks). Buy a two-ride ticket and take Mardi Gras or Tannenbaum lifts to the top to access the ridge at the top of the hill. A personal favorite of mine is to start at Tannenbaum, head over to Spruce Lake, backtrack and follow the trail all the way to the top of Cindy’s. Exercise! Y

Access unbelievable spots at Allegany State Park by hitting The Bear Paw Snowshoe Trail, which runs 2.3 miles around the Summit Area and Stone Tower. Another local favorite is the Pfeiffer Nature Center (in Portville, NY). K
And on Saturday, Feb. 4, Adventure Bound invites you to join them at Groove Fitness for a snowshoe tour around the pond (on Route 219), into the woods, and back behind Groove for hot chocolate, a fire and good times. They’re taking sign-ups now, so swing into 16 Washington and get yourself on that list! The City Garage, Adventure Bound onthefly, Holiday Valley and the Pfeiffer Nature Center all rent snowshoes if you’re in need but are not looking to purchase anything. Rates and hours can be found on respective websites/social media channels - but the official SNOWED-IN recommendation is that you go to these places in-person and check them out. February and March look to be all-time in terms of snowfall, so get yourself out there and try something new! For more information on snowshoe retail or rental, head into The City Garage or Adventure Bound onthefly.

ON SNOW: FOR A GOOD CAUSE PENGUIN PADDLE AT HOLIDAY VALLEY
Ask anyone who frequents Holiday Valley, and they’ll tell you the Penguin Paddle is an annual favorite event. And how could it not be? I don’t care how old you are - putting a plastic bag over your body and sliding down the ski slope headfirst like a penguin is awesome. But what’s more awesome is what the Penguin Paddle benefits. The Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program, founded in 1982, draws on volunteers to assist those of disability with the joy of skiing. You’ve probably seen them on the hill, smiles plastered on their faces. Taking place this year on Saturday, February 25, the Penguin Paddle is open to the public and encourages all ages to take part in the fun. Registration begins at 8:30am at Creekside Lodge and at 9am at the base of Yodeler; the $1 registration fee covers your race entry and black garbage bag. The action goes down at 1:30pm on Yodeler. (Not the whole run, that’d be crazy!) There are 7 age groups plus a ‘Mixed Double’ where you can grab a friend and race with them. (Helmets required.) And then there’s the auction. Raffle tickets will be on sale all day at Yodeler, where you’ll find a myriad of great prizes you can win - including a season’s pass to Holiday Valley! Past prizes have included plane tickets, and plenty of great gift baskets and local gift certificates, so the Penguin Paddle isn’t an event you’ll want to miss. For more information on the Penguin Paddle, head to www.holidayvalley.com or call 716-699-2345.
SKI DAY FOR UNITED WAY AT HOLIMONT
Now in its 9th year, United Way’s Ski Day at HoliMont couples great skiing with a great cause. United Way of Cattaraugus County helps to fund organizations like the YMCA, Red Cross, the Special Olympics and many more - so support is always needed. And what better way to do it than with a ski day? This year’s event is scheduled for Thursday, March 2. For $60, you’ll enjoy a continental breakfast, an all-day lift ticket, lunch from Dina’s (at the Mont), a long-sleeve event t-shirt and entry into the poker run. At the end of specific runs, a volunteer will be waiting for you to pick a card out of a deck. They’ll mark it on your lift ticket, and the person who has the best natural poker hand will win a box knife set from CUTCO. If you don’t want to take advantage of Dina’s lunch or the free t-shirt, you can buy an event ticket for $40 (but Dina’s food is really tasty, so you should probably just get a ticket for $60). United Way was quick to mention how greatly they appreciate the donations and help that all sponsors provide - between HoliMont hosting, CUTCO for the knives, Dina’s for the delicious food, and all of the volunteers involved. They’re still looking for another sponsor, so if you’re a business owner that would like to get involved, contact Gail Smith at the United Way of Cattaraugus County at 716-372-3620.

had a set goal of making it to any level - I just wanted to spend as much time doing the sport I love. It was the most fun I had in a month ever … just being there was an accomplishment. It is a one-of-a-kind experience that very few ever get, knowing you’re in the club is an honor. The Olympic Village was surreal, your competitors and other athletes out walking around, shopping and dining … words cannot explain it.

Bringing us to the present, DePeters is now a coach at Holiday Valley. I had the opportunity to catch up with him and talk about his amazing journey … “I don’t remember learning to ski … just always knew how,” he tells me. “My father taught me to ski when I was 1-½ years old.”
into a training pool. It was a great way to learn how far I could push my limits without needing to land perfectly. I would train at the Olympic Training Facility in Lake Placid, New York. The summer before the games, I was jumping double sessions all summer and hiked over 187,000 steps; I do not miss those stairs anymore!

Years ago, two kids who shared a love of everything Winter made a childhood bet. On the T-Bar at Buffalo Ski Club in Colden, NY a frustrated alpine racer took a break from training to go see her friend’s freestyle practice. This racer happened to be me, and one of my favorite things was to watch the aerial team practice as I was enamored with their grace and control in the air. Catching the T-Bar with my friend Matthew DePeters, on the ride up I told him that I would make the Olympics before him. He looked me in the eye and said, “No, I will make it first.” Little did I know, he was right. In 2010 Matt received the opportunity to try out for the 2010 United States Aerial Freestyle Team, and qualified. I still remember the MySpace message and subsequent phone call, as I had not heard from Matt in years. “Ha! I did it! I made the Olympics before you!”
CROFT: Tell me about the training that you were required to perform certain tricks. DePETERS: In Freestyle Aerials, you must log x-amount of jumps in the summertime

CROFT: What is the #1 thing you took away from your time competing? DePETERS: I have friends all over the world. It is an extraordinary camaraderie that is
formed; your competitors become your family. The moments at the top of the hill stick out the most, laughing and cracking jokes with the other athletes. If I wanted to go back to Europe I could call any number of people to go see because of the lifetime bond we created. CROFT: Why do you coach now? DePETERS: I want to pass on my love and knowledge of the sport. The joy on an ath-
lete’s face when they land a trick they have been working on does not have a price tag - that feeling is worth everything. I have had the opportunity now to coach from the U.S. Ski Team Level to Grassroots programs and you learn something new every day from the athletes. You get to continue to grow as they do. CROFT: What gear are you rocking this season? DePETERS: Lange Surefoot Custom Boot, Salomon Bindings, and Everyday Rocky Moun-
tain Underground Skis. When I competed, I was in a Full Tilt Boot and used Moment Skis.
CROFT: Any last thoughts? DePETERS: I want to give a huge shout-out to my family for supporting me through this
lifelong adventure and being there through the ups, downs and injuries. I could not have done this without them. Also, my friends along the way … you all know who you are. DePeters to this day exudes poise and grace in the air and this same feeling is put into his coaching. There is no athlete left behind. No matter if you are just starting out or are the best in the country, he gives each athlete 110%. There is a common theme I am finding with advanced winter programs: camaraderie. It is ever present and instills a great sense of loyalty for all that participate. You are changed in ways for the better that will translate into all aspects of your life. Read the full interview with DePeters, including fun facts like what tops his playlist, his favorite color, and more at www.ellicottvillesnow.com.

Winter is in full swing here in Ellicottville!
If you have yet to make the trek to HoliMont, plan a day (or two) during the week to come out and enjoy prime skiing surfaces, no lift lines, and comfy lounge areas inside and outside the main chalet. HoliMont is open to the public Monday through Friday; no reservation or membership required! Pack a lunch or purchase from the cafeteria, which offers delicious food options by Dina’s at The Mont. When those ski legs get a little tired, kick back around the outside fire pit.
CONGRATS! HOLIMONT SNOWBOARDERS IN STEAMBOAT
HoliMont snowboarders Megan Farrell (1st), Kaylie Buck (3rd), and Jen Hawkrigg (4th) completed a near sweep of the podium at the latest NorAm held in Steamboat Springs, Colorado in January. The three riders have been ripping it up on the NorAm circuit with Farrell winning the last four races, Buck with 3 bronze and Hawkrigg coming on strong with a silver and a 4th place at Steamboat. Farrell is off to world cups in Slovenia, Bulgaria and Korea. The next NorAm is right next door at Holiday Valley on Feb 9/10.
SLOPESIDE MOUNTAIN SHOP
The retail shop at HoliMont is downsizing inventory and has all outerwear marked down 25% or more. The shop is going through some restructuring and we are trimming down the product lines. This means great deals on all the gear you need, want or forgot. There are smoking deals on outerwear from Burton, HH and more. Check us out on social media and keep an eye out for random flash sales that offer freebies and discounts if you act now.
HOLIMONT SLOPE REPORT
HoliMont has a new and improved slope report feature on their website. The Slope Report is posted everyday before the lifts turn. Visit our site and bookmark the link for fast access to current conditions, trail openings and closings as well as firsthand comments on what to expect on the slopes every day.
WIN A PAIR OF VICE BINDINGS
HoliMont will host a Free Heel Fling on March 3rd. This is an informal get-together for skiers interested in Telemark skiing. Free coaching will be available for those looking to brush up their skills or first-timers looking to learn something new. Event lift tickets are $49 and can be purchased the day of or in advance from the HoliMont website. Every registered skier has a chance to win a pair of 2016-17 Vice Bindings from 22 Designs and Slopeside Snowsports at HoliMont!

LASTING MEMORIES
There is still time to take advantage of the best deal on membership ever. Ask your favorite HoliMont member about how you can save on a family, single or junior membership today. HoliMont is the largest private ski club in North America and has been creating lifelong memories and friendships since 1962. For more information call the main office at 716-699-2320.
THE KEY TO SUCCESS
There is no question that you have to have a quality product even if Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate. HoliMont has been making loads of quality snow for years. In fact, some of the crew at HoliMont were responsible for the initial design of the Pole Cat snow gun that you see widely used in most ski areas. Over the years HoliMont has invested in snowmaking. We can make snow on 100% of our slopes and have the ability to pile it up during short windows of optimal temps and conditions. All this means that while it may be green in your backyard, ours is blanketed in snow.
SAFETY FIRST AT HOLIMONT
We don’t ever hope to have to evacuate a chairlift, but being prepared is the key to success. HoliMont prides itself on safety and recently staged a lift evacuation practice with ski patrol and HoliMont area control. The drill is made as real as possible with radio alerts, guest communication and real lift evacuations using volunteers and employees. Rest assured that if you ever had to, the staff at the ‘Mont can get you down quickly and safely. For over 50 years, families and snowsports enthusiasts from miles around have converged on HoliMont, North America’s largest private ski area devoted to family skiing adventures. Generations of members have been drawn in by the amazing skiing, only to fall in love with the warm community atmosphere that makes HoliMont the kind of place you never want to leave. During the week, HoliMont is happy to welcome the public and groups. Our eight lifts service over 50 slopes and trails. Head to www.holimont.com.

FRE E Y OUR HE E L , FR E E Y O U R M IN D WIT H T H E CITY G A R A G E By Pat Morgan photos/Jaimie Woodarek
February is here in Ellicottville, and what a wild winter we’ve had thus far. From dumps of powder, to ‘spring like conditions’, Mother Nature certainly continues to be her chemically imbalanced self in the Western New York region. Despite these inconsistencies, the village continues to entertain crowds of enthusiastic visitors, packing our restaurants, ski slopes and retailers. This month, we turn our focus to one of the most unique shops in town, The City Garage (located at 5 Monroe Street), to find out what’s new and intriguing in the world of specialty retail. It’s no secret to those who know, that The City Garage has one of the most diverse product selections in town. Sure - they’ve got the basics in accessories and ski equipment you would expect in a ski shop, but they’ve also got a variety of items some would deem ‘off piste’ so to speak, which have been carefully selected by their credible, passionate staff. Over the last decade, the avid skiers who staff the shop have grown quite fond of telemark skiing, which has now become a focal point of the shop. So much so, they’ve gone as far as to deem February the ‘Unofficially Official Telemark Month’, which culminates with their 15th Annual Telestock event on Friday, February 24 from 9:00 - 3:00pm at Holiday Valley Resort. If you’ve never been to a Telestock in the past, this event should without question make your ‘to-do’ list. The crew from The City Garage sets up shop on the Champagne sundeck (adjacent to Yodeler Lodge), putting out their impressive telemark ski fleet with gear from 22 designs, Scarpa, Free Heel Life, and FlyLow. Holiday Valley generously offers up discounted lift tickets for those participating in these free clinics and demos, and Dom’s Butcher Block will make sure those in attendance are well fed with the finest selection of meats around. For more information, you can give the shop a call at 716-699-2054 or visit holidayvalley.com. Not quite ready for Telestock, or unsure if telemark skiing is for you? The City Garage has you covered, being the only shop in the village to offer telemark rentals. For $50, the shop will outfit you with everything you need to free your heel and free your mind. Recently, the shop has heavily invested in some of the best equipment on the market, including Scarpa boots, 22 designs bindings, and a variety of different skis. The great thing about telemark skiing: the bindings can be mounted to any type of ski, ensuring you can put your own personalized touch on the setup. One of their preferred lines at the shop is the Pinnacle Series, by the pride of the pacific northwest, K2 skis. The Pinnacle series is comprised of three models, ranging in widths from an every day 95mm, to a powder specific 118mm. With some new core technology, the Pinnacle offers a light touch attack to it, which equates to an enjoyable, fun, forgiving and easygoing ski that is still surprisingly stable. After all, skiing is supposed to be FUN, remember? Speaking of fun, no trip to The City Garage would be complete without browsing their vast selection of interesting accessories, and things you didn’t know you needed before visiting. Need a flask and shot glass set, thermos, or lunchbox? They’ve got just about any shape or size of stainless steel containers from Stanley. Worried your drinks won’t stay cold (or hot)? There’s an impressive display of coolers, coozies, chests, and cooler bags from Yeti, manufacturer of the highest quality coolers in the industry. Last but not least, you of course need to browse the racks of apparel and outerwear from Flylow, or outfit yourself with a hat, t-shirt, or sweatshirt proudly emblazoned with that iconic City Garage logo. Needless to say, it’s rare you leave the shop without a bag of goods you’d be hard pressed to find anywhere else!
THE CITY GARAGE | 5 MONROE STREET | 716-699-2054
THE STORY OF FLYLOW (from flylowgear.com): Flylow got its start when co-founders Greg Steen and Dan Abrams, both Colorado natives and friends since college, couldn’t find a pair of ski pants that could hold up to the kind of skiing they were doing. They were exploring the backcountry, tackling big-mountain terrain, and spending long days in variable weather. The gear they were using was either mountaineering apparel, which was built for light and fast travel but often didn’t fit right and lacked style, or resort-oriented ski apparel, which looked good but couldn’t handle the rigors of demanding terrain or the temperature control you needed when climbing and skiing peaks. Although the two friends had no real background in clothing design, they were skiers with creative minds, so they figured: Why not try to build better ski clothes? A French girl on the mountain observed them skiing and said, “You don’t ski fast—you fly low.” And the Flylow brand was officially born. Their first products, which debuted in 2005, were the super-tough Cactus Pant and the aptly named Black Coat (which, yes, came in just one color). It was a trialand-error process, but soon, they started fine-tuning the gear and developing a small following of core skiers. In the years since, they’ve built a collection of men’s and women’s outerwear that suits the needs of modern skiers. Still independently owned and operated by Greg and Dan, Flylow is now one of the most trusted, reliable brands in outdoor apparel. Through hard work and perseverance, Greg and Dan were able to build a grassroots company from the ground up, and rarely miss a powder day along the way. They’ve continued to live life on their own terms - traveling the mountains in search of deep snow, all the while designing gear on skin tracks and chairlifts. Now that you’ve got the scoop, there’s just one thing left to do - stop into The City Garage (open daily) where you’ll find a crew of like-minded individuals looking to get you dialed in. Whether it’s bootfitting, a tune-up, or just to find out where the pow stashes are, they’re there to foster the stoke of the industry and point you in the right direction. Want to keep in touch socially? You can ‘like’ their page on Facebook, or follow them on Instagram @thecitygarage. Until next time, see you in the lift line!

COMBING BEACHES FOR ART INSPIRED BY NATURE AND A CHILDHOOD SPENT ON LAKE ERIE, ARTIST GREGG VANHORN TRANSFORMS WEATHERED ROCK AND DRIFTWOOD INTO UNIQUE HOME DECOR By Dash Hegeman
Drift Rock Bay by Gregg VanHorn specializes in weathered rock and driftwood creations. Rock lamps, rock vases, and balancing rock wine bottle holders are some of the unique items he creates. Find VanHorn’s works at Ameri-Can, downtown Ellicottville, NY.
A childhood spent on the beaches of Lake Erie had a long-lasting - albeit unexpected - impact on Gregg VanHorn. Swimming during the day, summer sunsets and beach campfires created memories that would resonate with VanHorn for years to come. He developed an appreciation, not just for the lake, but for everything that it had to offer. Little did he know that the lake, and everything that it had to offer, would eventually become both a source of passion and a career. While working on a job site in the midst of his engineering career, VanHorn was fascinated by the contractors he saw drilling holes in concrete using an array of special tools. That sight made him wonder if he would be able to do the same thing with any sort of stone. The stones he had in mind were the ones that he grew up collecting on the shores of Lake Erie. “I started researching what I would need,” stated VanHorn, “and soon after I drilled my first couple of stones and made a few lamps, which I gave to family and friends. It was just a hobby for a few years, until my wife and friends convinced me it was time to take the next step. It was then that I opened an online shop and started selling rock creations on the side while I worked as an engineer.” Using a lot of trial and error, VanHorn experimented with making lamps, vases, and wine bottle holders out of rocks he would find on the shore of the lake for a number of years until his wife had the misfortune of being involved in a life-changing accident that left her with a lot of rehab time and need for physical care. It was at that point where VanHorn decided to forgo his engineering career in order to take care of his wife while she rehabbed and to focus on his growing artistic endeavors. “The fun part is combing the beach for rocks and driftwood, although I’ve become very picky about the rocks I use,” VanHorn responded when asked about his creative process. “I usually pick up a stone and give it a perfunctory inspection, for size, color, usability, and ‘drillability’. I often have an idea about what the rock might become, be it a vase, lamp, wine holder, or candle. I let the rocks speak to me. Sometimes it’s obvious, other
times they surprise me. And not all the rocks I bring home make the final cut. Next comes the time consuming step: the drilling. I use diamond bits, but it still takes 10-15 minutes per rock. After washing and sealing the rocks, it’s time to start assembling.” Using nature not only as a source of inspiration but also as the main component for his art has changed the way that VanHorn views the great outdoors. “I can’t be out in nature now without searching for the perfect rock or an interesting piece of wood,” he stated. “Anytime I’m outside, I’m inspired by nature’s beauty.” It was that very inspiration that most likely influenced VanHorn to start creating his artwork in the first place. “I love being able to bring nature indoors, using it in a beautiful and functional way,” said VanHorn. “I’ve collect rocks, sea shells, and beach glass since I was a child, so this was a natural extension of my interest in these naturally weathered ‘gifts from the sea’.” VanHorn’s artwork can be found at www.driftrockbay.com. He also tries to attend as many big art/craft shows in the area as he can. The next three on his agenda are: • Plantasia at the Hamburg Fairgrounds March 23-26 • Springtime in the Country at the Hamburg Fairgrounds March 31-Apr 2 • Knox Farm Mansion Spring Art Show in East Aurora May 13-14 “I have many rock creations in Ameri-Can in Ellicottville,” stated VanHorn. “I also do a lot of custom work for people that have specific ideas in mind.” For those in the Ellicottville area, be sure to stop in at Amer-Can to view first-hand the beautiful works by VanHorn. You may find yourself falling in love with and taking one home to call your own. Just like any creative mind, VanHorn professes to having too many ideas and not nearly enough time to see them all to fruition. He is currently working on a rock floor lamp and an indoor tabletop rock fountain. He is also nearly finished with a rock desk lamp that forms an arc. And when those are done, “I have a whole notebook of sketches and ideas I’d like to try in the future,” VanHorn concluded.

The body may need a colon cleanse if it experiences abdominal pain, excessive gas, bloating, bad breath, less than one bowel movement per day, difficult and painful bowel movements, skin rashes, acne, joint pain, insomnia, headaches, fatigue (especially in the afternoons), allergies, respiratory, bladder or vaginal infections, history of smoking and drinking alcohol, inactivity, feeling stuck in life, chronic stress and a diet full of processed foods, wheat, sugar, excessive animal protein and few fruits and vegetables. You may need a small intestine cleanse if you experience bloating or pain in the abdomen around the umbilicus, decreased nutrient absorption, mucus in the stool, overproduction of mucus in the body, belching, fatigue and yeast overgrowth. Symptoms of the liver needing to be cleansed are weight loss resistance, fatigue, skin sensitivity and disorders, discomfort under the right ribs, sensitivity to chemicals and tobacco, anger/irritability, high cholesterol, blood clotting disorders, fluid retention in the abdomen, lack of appetite and pain between the shoulder blades. Transit Time Test: Eat beets or canned corn and observe how many hours it takes to see the beets or corn in the stool. A normal transit time is 23-25 hours. If the food is seen after 25 hours then the transit time is slow, indicative of the body needing a digestive cleanse. 8-WEEK DIGESTIVE CLEANSE Weeks 1-4 (28 Days) • A detoxifying fiber to cleanse the colon. • Herbs for cleansing the colon and eliminating pesticides/fertilizers from the body. • Liquid chlorophyll to cleanse, nourish and alkalize the body. • Probiotics to replenish the colon’s microbiome. • Smoothies with an organic, vegan pea protein. • Paleo Lifestyle Replacement Plan. Weeks 5-6 (14 Days) • Marshmallow (herb) and Pepsin (enzyme) to detox the small intestine - this powerful combination clears the small intestine and other parts of the body of copious mucus production. Weeks 7-8 (14 Days) • Chinese herbal combinations to cleanse, protect and build the liver. • Liquid chlorophyll to cleanse, nourish and alkalize the body. • Probiotics to replenish the colon’s microbiome. • Smoothies with an organic, vegan pea protein. • Paleo Lifestyle Replacement Plan. A large percentage of people who cleanse have reported improvements in mood, energy levels, sleep, digestive and eliminative functions, skin health, blood analyses, overall pain and inflammation, libido, fertility, weight loss, brain function, immune system, decreased need for excessive medications, increased desire for movement and more happiness. To get started on your cleansing journey, contact me at 716-353-0786 or drkristina@kcbnd.net, or stop in and see me at Nature’s Remedy, downtown Ellicottville. Consultations for the Cleanse are FREE!
“Fit is not a destination. It’s a way of life.”
We have all seen that quote before. And, if you are in any fitness industry you better believe it. As a trainer, my job is to keep up with the ever-evolving fitness trends and tricks. And since I have been a part of this industry since 1983 (yikes!), I have seen many trends come and go. One thing that has stayed consistent however, is weight training. You don’t have to be a bodybuilder or professional athlete to reap the benefits of weight training. When done correctly, weight training can help you lose fat, increase your strength and muscle tone, and improve bone density. If done incorrectly, however, weight training won’t give you these benefits - and may even lead to injury. You may already know the dos and don’ts for weight training, but I’d be negligent as a trainer if I did not give them to you before encouraging you to weight train. So here goes: When you’re weight training, do: • Lift an appropriate amount of weight. Start with a weight you can lift comfortably 12 to 15 times. For most people, a single set of 12 repetitions with the proper weight can build strength just as efficiently as can three sets of the same exercise. As you get stronger, gradually increase the amount of weight. • Use proper form. Learn to do each exercise correctly. The better your form, the better your results - and the less likely you are to hurt yourself. If you’re unable to maintain good form, decrease the weight or the number of repetitions. Remember that proper form matters even when you pick up and replace your weights on the weight racks. If you’re not sure whether you’re doing a particular exercise correctly, ask a personal trainer or other fitness specialist for help. • Breathe. You might be tempted to hold your breath while you’re lifting weights. Don’t. Holding your breath can lead to dangerous increases in blood pressure. Instead, breathe out as you lift the weight and breathe in as you lower the weight. • Seek balance. Work all of your major muscles - abdominals, legs, chest, back, shoulders and arms. Strengthen the opposing muscles in a balanced way, such as the front of the shoulder and the back of the shoulder. • Rest. Avoid exercising the same muscles two days in a row. You might work all of your major muscle groups at a single session two or three times a week, or plan daily sessions for specific muscle groups. For example, on Monday work your arms and shoulders, on Tuesday work your legs, and so on. Follow these tips to avoid common mistakes when you’re weight training: • Don’t skip the warm-up. Cold muscles are more prone to injury than are warm muscles. Before you lift weights, warm up with five to 10 minutes of brisk walking or other aerobic activity. • Don’t rush. Move the weight in an unhurried, controlled fashion. Taking it slow helps you isolate the muscles you want to work and keeps you from relying on momentum to lift the weight. • Don’t overdo. For most people, completing one set of exercises to the point of fatigue is typically enough. Additional sets may only eat up your time and contribute to overload injury. • Don’t ignore pain. If an exercise causes pain, stop. Try it again in a few days or try it with less weight. • Don’t forget your shoes. Shoes with good traction can keep you from slipping while you’re lifting weights. Remember, the more you concentrate on proper weight training technique, the more you’ll get from your weight training program. FRIENDLY COMPETITION AND LEISURELY STROLLS It’s in Abundance in the Enchanted Mountains of Cattaraugus County By Mary Heyl Federal Duck Stamp artist Jennifer Miller
Sunset Treks at Allegany State Park
Curling Tournament at Good Times of Olean
Art Roscoe Loppet Cross-Country Ski Race
If cabin fever is setting in and you’re looking to discover something new, then explore all there is to do in Cattaraugus County during the month of February! Every weekend, there’s an exciting event taking place that you won’t want to miss, so get your calendar ready and fuel up your vehicle - from Portville to Salamanca, there’s lots in store for you and your family.
STAMP ART CONTEST WINNER SPEAKS
Just a few miles south of Olean, the historic village of Portville will be hosting the Pfeiffer Nature Center’s upcoming program, “Art and Conservation” at the Portville Free Library on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 10:30am. Federal Duck Stamp artist Jennifer Miller will be sharing her experiences with the national contest and the relationship between her artistic talents and passion for the natural world. Each year, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service holds the Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp Art Contest; at least five different species of waterfowl are selected each year and one of these is required to be the dominant feature of the entry. In 2014, Miller, an Olean native, won first place with her acrylic painting of a pair of ruddy ducks, which became the Duck Stamp for 2015. Each year, the Federal Duck Stamp sells for $15 and raises about $25 million annually to support conservation efforts in the wetland habitats in the National Wildlife Refuge System. Miller is looking forward to sharing her artistic experience and how one’s passion can have a meaningful impact on the environment. This event is free for Pfeiffer Nature Center members, $5 for non-members, and free for children 13 and under (all minors must be accompanied by an adult). Pre-registration is required: visit www.pfeiffernaturecenter.org or call the office at 716-933-0187 by 4pm on Thursday, Feb. 2.
CURLING TOURNAMENT
On Saturday, Feb. 11, Good Times of Olean is the place to be for anyone looking to enjoy one of Canada’s most beloved winter sports: curling! The 5th Annual Southern Tier Curling Tournament kicks off at 9am outside on the sand volleyball courts that have been converted into ice rinks for the big day. The annual tournament is the creation of tournament directors and cousins Corey Miller and Andy Studley, whose curiosity about the sport grew into one of the biggest curling events in the state. “Basically, it started as a conversation among friends - we all talked about how great it would be to try curling and to start a competition in the area,” Corey Miller explained.
top three teams, and other prizes have been donated for past winners including concert tickets, golf outings and more. There is also a cash prize awarded for the team with the best costumes! Although most team members are from the Olean area, Miller explained that there are some Olean natives who now live in Colorado and the Carolinas who return every year for the tournament, which is open to players ages 21 and older. Spectators are welcome and encouraged to attend this fun, free event, which will have live music throughout the day, raffles and food stations, plus outdoor firepits to keep warm. In addition to being a fun winter competition, this tournament is a fundraiser for local organizations including the Portville Alumni Football Association. Miller and Studley are excited to see the tournament grow each year, and are even considering expanding the tournament into a weekend-long event so that more teams can participate. For more information, contact Miller (716-904-0750, corey_miller@yahoo.com) or Studley (716378-9293, studleyaj@gmail.com).
CROSS-COUNTRY SKI RACE
Looking to explore twenty miles of the best cross-country ski trails in the Northeast? Look no further - the Annual Art Roscoe Loppet Cross-Country Ski Race is taking place on Sunday, Feb. 12 at the Allegany State Park Summit Ski Area in the Red House area of the park. Skiers of all skill levels are invited to participate in an invigorating day on the Art Roscoe Trail System, where they can choose the distance that best suits their fitness and interest: the 22K race at 9:30am, the 13K race at 9:45am or the 6K race at 10am. Registration begins on-site at 8am, although participants are encouraged to pre-register online at heartrateup.com. Awards will be given to the top 5 male and female skiers in each division, plus overall winners. New for 2017: all finishers will receive a finisher’s token. Participants have a chance to win an impressive range of prizes including skis, GPS watches, poles from Infinity and gear from Alpina Sports and The City Garage. The race concludes with a fun post-race party at the Summit warming hut, complete with toasty beverages, snacks, and door prizes. For more information, contact event promoter Mark Lawrence at 716-574-0888.
WINTER SUNSET TREKS
Even though Miller, Studley, and their friends had no experience curling, they quickly learned the sport and shared their interest with others. Five years ago, the group hosted the first tournament in Miller’s parents’ backyard on their pond; seventeen teams of four players each competed. The following year, there was so much interest in the event that a larger location was needed, and Miller reached out to Good Times as the perfect venue, where the tournament has taken place every year since.
Those wanting to enjoy the beauty of Allegany State Park at a more leisurely pace can take part in the park’s Winter Sunset Treks which take place every Monday evening at 4:30pm through February. Each week, a park naturalist will lead snowshoe treks (weather permitting) or hikes along the summit ridgeline on Bear Paw Trail. Guests are in for a treat, as few sights are as beautiful as the Stone Tower at sunset. The trail, which is 2.3 miles long, is fairly easy to manage with only slight changes in elevation and ends in a post-trek social at the Summit Warming Hut. Guests are encouraged to dress warm and bring a flashlight and a snack for the journey. To learn more, contact the park’s Environmental Education/Recreation Department at 716-354-9101 ext. 236.
This year, the 64-team tournament filled up in an hour, and there are now 43 teams on the waiting list! According to Studley, gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded to the

SHOP. PLAY. DINE. STAY ... SNOCROSS IN SALAMANCA
FEB. 3-4
By Pat Morgan As one may notice, the majority of focal points in this publication tend to revolve around the ski and snowboard culture, that is so passionately supported by Ellicottville and its surrounding communities. We’d be remiss however, not to spotlight some of the other exciting happenings occurring just outside the village, which draw visitors into our communities from near and far. One of said activities, is the 2016/17 U.S. Air Force Snocross National, which roars onto the property of the Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino in Salamanca, NY, February 3-4. For years, crowds have been treated to the sights, sounds and smells (race fuel!) of this exciting event, so let’s fill you in on the back story. First things first, it’s important to shed some light on what snocross is all about. Of course, we all know a thing or two about snowmobiles, having seen them on the trails or fields of our region, and at the resorts we frequent. Now, imagine adding a generous amount of horsepower (like, hang on for dear life amount), mix it with the competitive, head-to-head racing of motocross, and voila! You have yourself the AMSOIL Championship Snocross Series, which first caught the attention of viewers nationwide during the 1998 X-Games, as a never-before-seen exhibition event to many. Born in the Midwest, snocross was known for the iconic (and cold!) tracks in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Not to the surprise of anyone who has attended previous Salamanca races, our local event is now spoken of throughout the industry as a favorite stop on the 8-stop tour, by both fans and competitors alike! Now that you have the back story, we thought it would be a good idea for you readers to have just a little more information on what to watch for at the upcoming event. You’ll want to of course know, that these days start early, as there are a number of amateur divisions which compete prior to the big dogs, spanning men’s and women’s riders from 8 years old and up. These race days are long, so if you’d like to catch all the action, you’d best be trackside bright and early! Speaking of the big dogs, there are two divisions - the Pro Lite Division (smaller, more nimble machines) and the Pro Open Division (power, power, power). In the Pro Lites, you’ll want to keep an eye on Aki Pihlaja, Nickolas Lorenz, and Kevin Wallenstein, currently leading in the point standings. On the Pro Open side of the pits, Tim Tremblay, Kody Kamm, and repeated X-Games gold medalist Tucker Hibbert will have all eyes glued to their sleds. If you can’t make it during the day on Friday and Saturday, not to worry, the opening ceremonies and finals for all divisions start at 6pm each evening, wrapping up by 10pm, making this a family-friendly event. So there you have it - you’re now officially outfitted with everything you need to know to attend the upcoming U.S. Air Force Snocross National. There’s just one thing left to do - purchase your tickets TODAY! You can do so through snocross.com, or through senecaalleganycasino.com as well, where you can also book some great stay & play packages to take full advantage of your visit. Don’t forget, in addition to their massive gaming facility and mouth watering restaurants, they’ll also have a vendor village relating to the event this year, which now features an all new Native American Craft Vendor section - complete details online, or call 1-877-8-SENECA for more info.

“TURN ME LOOSE” Take a trip down memory lane with three of the most popular teen idols of the late ‘50s and ‘60s. The Golden Boys are coming to Seneca Allegany Resort and Casino
A Conversation with Fabian HULICK: It’s good to talk to you. I’ve interviewed both Frankie and Bobby
in the past couple years, so I am very glad I now get to talk with you and finish up having interviewed the trio. FABIAN: I’m sorry you had those experiences.
HULICK: (laughs) Now is that the same thing they would have said if I told
them I had interviewed you? FABIAN: Absolutely! (laughs)
HULICK: The three of you joined together to create “The Golden Boys”. Who came up with the
name? And how long have you been touring together? FABIAN: That was music producer Dick Fox. He put us together and came up with name. We’ve been touring for over 30 years now. HULICK: It has to be a lot of fun… those decades, the 50’s & 60’s, seemed like a good time. FABIAN: Oh yeah… for us it was. You are probably too young to have been a part of that.
...................... SATURDAY | MARCH 4 @ 7pm By Melanie Hulick Alright Baby Boomers … Seneca Allegany Casino will have your show of all shows when the 50’s & 60’s come alive on Saturday, March 4 at 7pm. That’s when “The Golden Boys” will make a stop in Salamanca and take you back to a time that was simpler and all kinds of fun. Singers Fabian, Frankie Avalon and Bobby Rydell have been taking their fans from over five decades ago, as well as generations of new fans, on a musical journey from the good old days. The trio, known as The Golden Boys, came together over 30 years ago when music producer Dick Fox had a vision of putting together three of the biggest teen idols at the time and sending them out on the road to showcase each member’s biggest hits, as well as paying tribute to other music legends, in a show with some of the most memorable songs of all time. Fast forward 30+ years and they are still filling concert venues all over the country with audiences wanting to hear songs like “Turn Me Loose”, “Tiger”, “Venus”, “De De Dinah”, “Volare” and “Wild One”.
HULICK: Yes, I was, but I know all of you guys’ music and who you are. You’ve done over 30
films, as well as many, many television appearance in different shows over the years. Do you have any upcoming appearances in film or television? FABIAN: I don’t think any idiot’s going to hire us now. (laughs) HULICK: Now wait a minute… I don’t know about that. I think you would do well in some guest
spots on television with all the choices with HBO, Netflix, etc. FABIAN: Well maybe. I’ve moved away from California. I bought some farm land in western Pennsylvania, so I’m kind of isolated here and I never get into Los Angeles. Also I never push to do those kinds of things anymore. Maybe I should, but… my only regret is that I would have loved to do a sitcom. I just love to laugh. HULICK: I can see that you’d be good at that from just talking to you these past few minutes.
(laughs) You’ve also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2002 and Philadelphia honored you on their Walk of Fame… FABIAN: They had no choice… I lived there. (laughs) HULICK: (laughs) Being that Frankie and Bobby are both from Philadelphia as well, did they
each get a star too? FABIAN: Yes they did.
HULICK: Of all the songs you’ve recorded, which one is your favorite? FABIAN: Oh, wow… I guess “Turn Me Loose”. HULICK: That’s a great one. What would you say is your favorite Frankie Avalon song? FABIAN: I don’t like anything he does. HULICK: (laughs) Oh my gosh. FABIAN: (laughs) I’d have to say “Venus”.
“The three of us have a great time on stage,” said Fabian when we talked by phone recently. “We absolutely bring back those eras through videos and song.”
HULICK: What is your favorite Bobby Rydell song? FABIAN: That would be “Wildwood Days”.
While each artist reminisces about their own career, they also combine their talents to bring the hits of some of the other biggest artists of that time alive … artists like Elvis Presley, Rick Nelson and Bobby Darin.
Was music something you were always interested in when you were discovered at age 14? FABIAN: No. I wasn’t interested in it at all. I would sing along with the radio like everyone else, but the only reason I got in the music business is because my father became very ill and he couldn’t work any longer, and I was the eldest of three sons. This record company guy had a good friend that lived next door to us and as they were taking my dad out in an ambulance he came over to me. There were guys of a certain look making it in those days and I guess I had that look. He came up to me and asked if I would like to get involved in the music business and I told him to go to hell because I was worried about my dad. Then he kept bugging the guy next door about me and when I found out my dad couldn’t go back to work I told him I would try it and that’s how I got started. I am the original “fish out of water”.
Talking with Fabian was a blast. He is very charming and very funny, which you will find out as you read the following interview. We talked about how he got his start in the music business, even when he had no desire to be a part of that scene. You’ll find out what his biggest regret was, which I think he should pursue and make happen, as well as his favorite song of each of his co-stars of The Golden Boys … and read the special message he has for our readers. If you want to take a trip down memory lane, visit www.senecacasinos.com and get your ticket now before they are all gone … this is your chance to let the good times roll.

HULICK: By the age of 18 you already had recorded eight albums and had two gold records.
HULICK: When you are not traveling and performing what would we find you doing? FABIAN: My perfect day would be fishing in my pond or being on my tractor or ATV… and taking
my wife out… or in. (laughs)
HULICK: (laughs) Do you have a message for our readers? FABIAN: The main thing I would like to say is… now this is not to sound corny, but we appreci-
ate that after all these years… we really do appreciate seeing them at our shows. It’s like a big reunion out there. We all go back a long time with our fans and they are incredible people. HULICK: Before we hang up I want to wish you a Happy Birthday February 6th. FABIAN: Well thank you very much! I’ll be 74… but I feel 75. HULICK: (laughs) You really ought to look into doing that sitcom. FABIAN: (laughs) You’re right!
