snowTRENDS: SKI LIKE A ROCKSTAR this Spring with TOP LINES available at MSG
We’ve seen it all these past few months - from the mixed bag of “yuck” falling from the sky to our blessed lake effect storms that leave us tempted to call in with a case of the powder flu. This season has been everything the “experts” called for and then some. However, winter isn’t making its departure yet, and it is certainly far from over at Mud Sweat n’ Gears. Owners/operators Kim Reading and Miguel Azcarate are not only retailers by heart and trade; they’re also well traveled and experienced skiers who bring a wealth of knowledge and insight into the products select to take seed within their shop. With that said, they’ve got a few ideas for some products to help you re-define (or simply prolong) your season, be it here on the east coast, or wherever your spring snow travels take you ... page 12

Art is a beacon of light, and it is the vision of The Art Center and School of Bradford to create art and foster art appreciation within the region. The newly opened center is located at 54 Boylston Street, Bradford, Pennsylvania. Adriana Hernandez and Samila Sosic - both professional Master of Fine Arts (MFA) artists who opened the school, will offer classes in drawing, figure & portrait, acrylic and oil painting. Trained in both traditional and contemporary techniques, the instructors will customize classes for ages 6 to adult. Offering fine art classes and workshops, their vision with the school is to provide a positive, structured learning environment and to build a thriving art community where all types of artists can make connections and build friendships. “Our goal is to reach out to the very talented people of the region to provide a format where both the person who wants to learn how to draw and paint and the experienced artist seeking a refresher course can learn new techniques and display their artwork,” explained Sosic. Hernandez is an experienced portrait artist with a BA in education and a Master of Fine Arts from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, CA. Sosic received her BS degree in Architecture from the University of Sarajevo in 1991, Bosnia and Herzegovina; in 2011 she received her BA in Interdisciplinary Arts from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, and most recently her Master of Fine Arts from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

Intrigued by the reflection of light on the structures of rural farms, Sosic is drawn to paint Pennsylvania landscapes and farmlands. Her series of paintings, “Rural Beauty,” captures the diversity of farmlands and architectural structures enhanced by the weather, special light conditions and seasonal changes. Both instructors are experienced in teaching a variety of techniques and working with different age groups. All supplies are included in the price of the classes, and new classes start every two weeks. Private lessons are also available. The artists are also available to teach art classes off-site for groups, for example: golfers or Red Hat Ladies looking for a fun group activity. A customized painting or drawing class can be designed to be taught at your location. Cork & Canvas classes have been popular for adults. Beginners drawing classes in pencil or charcoal, or basics in acrylic painting are good choices for middle-aged school groups. View the artwork of both artists locally at the Ellicottville, NY Memorial Library, located at 6499 Maples Road. A series of portrait paintings by Hernandez is currently on display until March. Immediately following this display, a series of rural landscape paintings by Sosic will be showcased. The hours of the library are Monday 10am-5pm, Tuesday and Wednesday 10am-8pm, and Thursday-Saturday 10am-5pm. Future plans for the school include hosting art exhibits, social events, and renting out art studio space to local artists. In addition, both artists are available to do commission work. For additional information on the school and upcoming classes, please call 814-558-5051 or e-mail samila.and.adriana@gmail.com.

ON DECK AT HOLIDAY VALLEY . . .
LET’S GET ZANY WITH THESE
MARCH TRADITIONS
Mardi Gras Parade Pond Skimming
Winter Carnival at Holiday Valley
By Spencer Timkey There’s no doubt that winter in Ellicottville is always an unbelievably good time. By the time March comes around, however, many of us are ready for some consistent Vitamin D and warmer temperatures. Finish the year strong with these annual outdoor events hosted by Holiday Valley: Winter Carnival (March 14-15) and Pond Skimming (March 22). So many activities! Winter Carnival and Mardi Gras are fan favorite events, with Ellicottville and Holiday Valley teaming up to provide one of the most fun and iconic weekends of the season. Saturday at HV is vintage ski suit day (which, for some people, is every day) as well as the Mountain Crew’s Snobar - a perennial attraction that brings people in from all over. In keeping with tradition, every year each lift crew gets a pile of snow and transforms their mound into fun and unique sculptures; over the seasons we’ve seen dragons, trains, mini villages and tons of other creatively thought-up masterpieces. Safety Patrol will have a cookout at the base of Yodeler the entire weekend, while on Sunday, they’ll do a pancake breakfast at the Warming Hut on Champagne. Then there’s the Mardi Gras parade on Washington Street downtown in the village, held Saturday evening. Last year the participants went above and beyond with their costumes - it is always a sight to see! Better yet, join in the fun and march too! Everyone is invited to take part, and it’s FREE! (For a parade application, go to www.ellicottvilleny.com or contact the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce at 716-699-5046.) Cleveland native Zack Smith comes to Ellicottville with friends for one weekend every year, and it’s Winter Carnival. “The Snobar is an absolute riot. We participate in a couple of the events, but the last
Pancake Breakfast
few years have been sunny days so we’re content with just sitting around on the deck at Yodeler, having a couple brews and hanging out.” An added bonus, he noted, was how awesome the skiing has been to complement all of the activities going on. “Holiday Valley never ceases to amaze me,” he said. “The quality of the snow is unmatched, which is why we come here. There’s tons of stuff to do that weekend, and when we feel like skiing, we’re never disappointed.” Two Winter Carnival events stand out in particular: the GS Beer/Rootbeer race on Yodeler and the Dummy Downhill. The Dummy Downhill has gone on for some time, and the creativity people show in building their ‘dummys’ is outstanding. The dummys take flight, and the crashes are spectacular. Entry forms for the Dummy Downhill are available at www.holidayvalley.com. Fast-forward two weekends later, and Holiday Valley gives us the ever-popular Pond Skimming at Yodeler. On Saturday, March 28, participants will hike up the lower part of Yodeler slope to get a head start, then jet down and skim across a man-made trench of water. Not everyone makes it across, but everyone’s attempts are hilarious - especially those who dress up for it. The beauty of these two weekends is that they are very family friendly. A note to parents: don’t let the label “Mardi Gras” scare you … both Holiday Valley Resort and the Village of Ellicottville have made this universally known celebration into a family zone, so don’t hesitate to bring your little ones along for the ride. For more information on these and other March events at Holiday Valley, head to www. holidayvalley.com and www.ellicottvilleny.com.

NOBODY KNOWS ELLICOTTVILLE LIKE WE DO!
Page 06 ... SNOWED-IN ~ MARCH 2015
Ah, ski season ... it seems like we wait an eternity for it to start and then when it finally does ... just like that ... it’s the beginning of March and we only have a little over a month left to make turns, hit the terrain park, attend apres ski parties, take chairlift selfies, or do whatever it is that you love the most out on the slopes. Shakespeare famously wrote that we should “Beware the Ides of March” but we say ... embrace March! What you should beware of is allowing March to pass you by too quickly and not taking full advantage of the fun experiences that await you out on the slopes. It’s like ski movie pioneer Warren Miller always says, “If you don’t do it this year, you’ll be one year older when you do.”
VALENTINE’S DAY SNOWSTORM You never know what to expect with Western New York weather, especially when it comes to snowstorms, and this past Valentine’s Day was definitely no exception. After receiving consistent snow all morning long, early on in the afternoon the sky opened up and the snow really started to fall. At one point the snowstorm was so intense that you could barely see the chair in front of you on the ride up the chairlift to the top of the hill. The brunt of the snowstorm was fairly short-lived, however it lasted long enough to give the hills of Ellicottville noticeable snow accumulation for the day. It’s safe to say that we’re now in the heart of the winter snowsports season here at HoliMont and we are enjoying every minute of it. All summer long we daydream of making turns down Greer, teaching beginner skiers and snowboarders about the sport we love, making park laps, cruising through the glades, and so much more. That time is here and believe us … it is not to be missed!
LOOKING BACK AT THE HOLIMONT SNOWSPORTS PHOENIX ADAPTIVE RACE The HoliMont Snowsports Phoenix Adaptive Race is an event that everyone at HoliMont looks forward to year after year, and February 7, 2015 was no different. The Phoenix athletes are the definition of snowsports enthusiasts. Their determination to be out on the slopes supersedes any physical or mental limitation they have, which is a testament to their competitive nature. It is that competitive attitude that fuels the HoliMont Snowsports Phoenix Adaptive Program and allows it to grow and provide a rich environment for those with special needs. Since its inception, the race has tripled in size, and there are plans in the works to help the event continue to grow in the future. Aside from the athletes, one of the most impressive aspects of the Phoenix Adaptive Program is its ability to attract volunteers to assist the HoliMont instructors in working with the program participants. The program brings in volunteers from all walks of life who share one thing in common: the desire to help spread their love of snowsports to people who might otherwise not have the opportunity to feel the rush of setting an edge in the snow and carving across a hill. The HoliMont Snowsports Phoenix Program focuses on addressing a wide range of special needs, which include both cognitive and physical issues. We invite all members and guests of HoliMont to visit the Snowsports School and watch the Phoenix Adaptive Program’s fine athletes on the hills.
SNOWED-IN ~ MARCH 2015 ... Page 07
SNOW SCULPTURES Leading up to the President’s Day Weekend, the HoliMont Lift Department showcased its snow shaping creative skills and constructed some very impressive (and colorful) snow sculptures. The sculptures were a huge hit with HoliMont Members and guests alike over the course of the weekend, and thanks to the cold temps we’ve received, they might be around for awhile.
TELEFEST Free your mind and free your heel at HoliMont’s annual Telefest celebration on Friday, March 6. If you have yet to check out the art form that is telemark skiing, this is an excellent opportunity to get out on the slopes with people who are passionate about the sport and more than willing to share their knowledge. Call 716-699-8159 for more information.
SKI DAY FOR UNITED WAY Make plans now to hit the slopes at HoliMont on Thursday, March 5 to benefit a worthy organization! The United Way of Cattaraugus County is coming back to HoliMont for another day of fun out on the snow. A special price of $60 gets you a lift ticket, event t-shirt, breakfast and lunch, and the knowledge that you’re helping to support a worthwhile cause. Register by going to www.uwcattco.org or calling 716-372-3620. We hope to see you here!
ACROBAG The Acrobag Tour is returning to HoliMont March 25-29 for another session of big air, spins, thrills, and maybe a few spills (into the cushy landing of the Acrobag of course). Once again the Acrobag crew will be setting up 2 bags; one for skiers and snowboarders and one for tubing, which was a HoliMont fan favorite last season. Stay tuned to www.holimont.com for more details on times and cost.
For over 50 years, families and snowsports enthusiasts from miles around have converged on HoliMont, North America’s largest private ski area devoted to family skiing adventures. Generations of members have been drawn in by the amazing skiing, only to fall in love with the warm, community atmosphere that makes HoliMont the kind of place you never want to leave. During the week, HoliMont is happy to welcome the public and groups. Our eight lifts service over 50 slopes and trails. Head to www.holimont.com or call 716-699-2320

MEET YOUR RACING DIRECTOR One-on-One with Travis NICOLE: How long have you been a part of HoliMont? TRAVIS: This is my fourth season as Racing Director. I grew up in Ellicottville
and ski raced for HoliMont as a Junior. In 2007 I coached the JI/JII Program which is currently the U18 Program at HoliMont. After a four-year stint at Smugglers Notch Ski Club running their Racing Programs, I returned home to Ellicottville to take my current position.
NICOLE: I noticed that HoliMont has several racing programs. How involved
do you get in each of the disciplines? TRAVIS: I oversee all programs, and I work on-snow coaching athletes in all of the skiing programs. My snowboarding skills are still a bit infantile, but I do work to organize and set up all the snowboard events and training venues.
NICOLE: You are certainly one busy guy! Could you tell me something about
the racing program that most people do not know? TRAVIS: HoliMont Racing began in 1967 as a low key family based organization and has maintained these roots while placing athletes on the Canadian and U.S. National Teams, NCAA Division 1 College Programs, and becoming one of the premier ski and snowboard programs in New York State.
d
orl
NICOLE: Are there any events within the racing program that the general
uor Travis Widger (right) with grandpa Pete and wife Laura.
public can take part in? TRAVIS: The general public can participate in many of our races as long as they are members of the United States Ski Racing Association (USSA), New York State Ski Racing Association (NYSSRA), and United States of America Snowboard and Free ski Association (USASA).
NICOLE: What do you absolutely love about snow sports and what do you
love about your job? TRAVIS: I love that snow sports are always changing, whether it is the weather, terrain, snow conditions, or course. I love being outside and helping to give back to a program and culture that gave so much to me while sharing that lifelong love for winter sports, which I cherish with today’s youth.
NICOLE: Did you ever think you would be in the position you are in now as
.................................. Travis Widger Fourth Generation Ellicottvillian By Nicole M. Nyznyk If you are not already familiar with HoliMont’s diverse Racing Program (or should I say programs), let me enlighten you. HoliMont has several racing disciplines - from Intraclub Racing which introduces young skiers to the excitement of ski racing, to Adult Racing that is designed to challenge and improve on one’s skiing ability, to competitive programs such as HoliMont’s Junior Alpine Travel Team and Junior Snowboard Team. Whether you are new to racing or an advanced skier, HoliMont’s Racing Program has something for everybody! With that said, coordinating all of these comprehensive programs is no easy feat. It takes a very organized and dynamic person to keep it all under control. This month, SNOWED-IN took some time to sit down with the brains and skis behind this phenomenal Racing Program. Meet HoliMont’s Racing Director, Travis Widger, aka “Widg”. If you’re a local, you might know this fourth generation Elliicottvillian. And if you are a part of the Racing Program at HoliMont, you certainly are familiar with him! Travis and his wife, Laura recently had their first child, Jack Peter Widger, fifth generation, who they hope to have on skis near the end of next season!
.................................. For more information about HoliMont’s Racing Programs, click over to www.holimont.com
the Racing Director at HoliMont? TRAVIS: It never occurred to me that I would choose a career in snow sports, however skiing and ski racing is more genetic than tradition in my family. My dad Mike Widger, and his dad (my grandpa) Pete Widger have been involved in snow sports in Ellicottville their whole lives as former racers, instructors, coaches, and managers. Grandpa Pete helped run and work at the School at Holiday Valley in the 1960’s, Managed HoliMont for nearly 20 years, and currently does the daily slope reports at Holiday Valley. My dad ran the Racing Programs and coached at Holiday Valley in the 1980’s and is currently coaching with me at HoliMont. I guess winter sports are in my blood!
NICOLE: I guess if it’s in your blood, you have no choice but to roll (or ski)
with it! How do you motivate yourself and your team, and what makes your coaching staff awesome? TRAVIS: We motivate ourselves and team by getting out there to ski and ride with our athletes. We focus strongly on the basic fundamentals of skiing and riding with a goal of creating a platform from which all athletes can learn, grow, and succeed through directed freesking on all aspects of the mountain, while reaching for personal goals in snow sports competition, and instilling a lifelong love for winter sports in all. We strive to create great skiers and riders first who will then become awesome competitors. Our coaching staff is so great because they are talented skiers and riders with big hearts and a huge love for winter sports.
NICOLE: What do you look forward to in the racing programs in the near future?
TRAVIS: We are looking forward to our upcoming championship season
where we will have athletes competing across the State, East, Provinces, and Country in events such as State Championships for many age groups in ski racing, snowboarding Provincial Championships and USASA National Championships, Eastern Championships and Kandahar Festivals hosted at HoliMont Feb. 28-March 1.
NICOLE: Last question … what’s your favorite run at HoliMont? TRAVIS: Wild Turkey.

SKI LIKE A ROCKSTAR (and feel like one too!)
WITH THESE TOP LINES AVAILABLE AT MUD SWEAT N’ GEARS By Pat Morgan What a winter it has been here in Ellicottville, NY. We’ve seen it all these past few months - from the mixed bag of “yuck” falling from the sky, to our blessed lake effect storms that leave us tempted to call in with a case of the powder flu. This season has been everything the “experts” called for and then some. However, winter isn’t making its departure yet, and it is certainly far from over at one of the fine specialty shops in the village, Mud Sweat n’ Gears, who have spent the last few weeks already worrying about what to fill their store with for NEXT season. Owners/operators Kim Reading and Miguel Azcarate are not only retailers by heart and trade; they’re also well traveled and experienced skiers who bring a wealth of knowledge and insight into the products they meticulously hand select to take seed within their shop. With that said, they’ve got a few ideas for some products to help you re-define (or simply prolong) your season, be it here on the east coast, or wherever your spring snow travels take you. It goes without saying, MSG hangs their hat on not only their service of the local ski industry, but the selection they afford them, which leads them to proudly suggest one of the premier skis on the market today, the Rossignol Soul 7. This impressive looking ski is part of Rossi’s successful 7 series, complimented by the Super & Smash 7 models as well. At first glance, one can’t help but notice the tips and tails of these skis. Initially some perceived the look to be gimmicky, until testers were seduced by the forgiveness and quick pivoting offered by this model. You see, those bright tips and tails aren’t just aesthetic - they’re performance driven, with a honeycomb construction offering a reduced swing weight that eliminates that annoying tip-flap many of you experience here on east coast hard pack when using a rocketed ski. If you’re looking to feel like a rockstar with a nimble ski that allows you to push your boundaries, this ski is for you, and the crew at MSG would be glad to get you out on a pair of demos or fit you with your own in-store. Equally important to skiing like a rockstar is LOOKING and FEELING like a rockstar, which is again one of the in-house specialties at MSG. While they offer a wide variety of outerwear brands, the champion of champions in their stable is the line Arc’teryx, a premier company in its respective category. The name Arc’teryx itself speaks volumes to the company’s roots, with its name being an ode to one freeing themselves from the constraints of a horizontal world. Attention grabbing, no? One of the many things MSG takes pride in is being able to apply their vast travel and ski experiences to their selection of outerwear lines, Kim explains. “One of the key ingredients to extending your ski season is making sure you’re properly outfitted,” she reveals, speaking to the range of temperatures we can expect to experience heading into the spring season.
MSG ski tech Cody Anderson is outfitted in the Beta AR jacket by Arc’teryx, “Ellicottville” branded beanie, with Rossignol Soul 7 ski.
Often times you’ll start with frigid morning temps, and end the day wishing you had nothing more than a t-shirt on (don’t be that guy though). Arc’teryx has these range of temps in mind in the product line, starting with the Atom LT Jacket Versatile combination for layering on cold, wet days or as an outer layer in cold dry conditions. This warm midlayer features composite materials that provide balanced warmth and breathability that offers a supple hand, yet high end layering performance. The icing on the cake would be pairing this piece with one of Arc’teryx’s many technical high performance shells, like the Beta AR, Stingray and Modon jackets. Each of these jackets feature N80p-X GORETEX 3L fabric, which in everyday speak translates to bomb-proof/tougher than you. With waterproofing and breathability in mind, these coats offer fits that accommodate pieces like the aforementioned layers beneath, while maintaining streamlined function and highend performance. Of course, we’d be remiss if we didn’t also mention these pieces come in a variety of timeless colors and patterns that will leave you looking great on the streets and on the slopes for years to come.
Give the team at MSG a shout today to learn more or to schedule an appointment. MUD SWEAT N’ GEARS: 18 Monroe Street, Ellicottville, NY 716-699-8300 • www.mudsweatgears.com
Now that you’re armed with the knowledge, there’s only one step left: get on down to Mud Sweat n’ Gears on the corner of Washington and Monroe Streets. On top of these great brands, they also offer top-of-the-line “back shop” service (sharpen, wax, etc.), rentals, accessories like GoPro’s, goggles, helmets and more. You can also make an appointment with one of their renowned boot fitters, which could be one of the most important aspects of your trip to the mountain.

Apres Cuisine
with Chef Rory Mosher of John Harvard’s Brew House
In honor of Ellicottville’s Mardi Gras celebration, we’re bringing a taste of New Orleans to the table. Here at John Harvard’s, nothing says Mardi Gras more than a piping hot bowl of jambalaya. Originating in southern Louisiana in the late 1800’s, jambalaya is said to be a compound word of Jambon (from the French meaning ham) and Aya (the African word for rice), as there were many slaves in the south at that time. Common belief, however, is that it originated from the Spanish Paella, which is better known in the U.S. as Spanish rice. Jambalaya typically incorporates seafood, ham, link sausage rounds and chicken, although it doesn’t have to have all those ingredients.
S ’ N I D E W O N S f EVL o k c i P Menu Month the
JOHN HARVARD’S SIGNATURE JAMBALAYA : SERVES 4 - 6 INGREDIENTS: 3 lbs. chicken breast (diced into cubes) 1 lb. Andouille sausage (circle slices) 1 lb. shrimp (remove tails) 3 lbs. cooked white rice 2 cloves garlic (finely chopped) 1 cup white wine 1 bunch fresh parsley (finely chopped) 3 cups chicken stock JAMBALAYA SAUCE: 2 white onions 3 green peppers 3 red peppers 1 stalk celery 1 cup white wine 46 ounces V8 tomato juice 53 ounces tomato puree ¼ cup vegetable oil 3 Tbsp Cajun seasoning (all vegetables finely chopped)

FOR THE SAUCE: On low heat, cook vegetables in oil for 3-5 minutes. Turn up to medium heat, add Cajun seasoning and stir. Keep at heat for 3 minutes. Add white wine, V8 juice and tomato puree. Simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Set aside. Cook the rice. FOR THE DISH: Season the meats with Cajun seasoning. Cook in a large pot at medium heat until golden brown. Add garlic, cook for 2-3 minutes. Add white wine, chicken stock and jambalaya sauce, and let cook for 5 minutes. Add rice, stir and let the sauce cook for 2-3 minutes. Finish with parsley and serve LET’S PAIR IT: Jambalaya is a great dish to help take the chill out of a cold winter afternoon. As we approach springtime, many of you may be wondering when this arctic blast will give way to warm, sunny days. So to pair this dish, we reached for a pint of Southern Tier Brewery’s “Where The Helles Summer?” Interesting name, yes? Where The Helles Summer is a light classic German style lager. “Helles” is German for “bright” which in the brewing world translates to light in color and light in alcohol. It is a clean and bready (beer drinker’s beer) balanced with austere noble hop varieties. Now go forth, cook your festive dish, enjoy your refreshing brew, and you will be one happy human! Cheers to warmer temps which undoubtedly lie ahead.
ABOUT THE CHEF: Rory Mosher offers 11 years of experience in the food and beverage industry. Born and raised in Little Valley, NY, Rory has followed in his parents’ footsteps with an extensive culinary background. Rory assisted in opening John Harvard’s Brew House in 2009 and is currently holding the position as Chef of John Harvard’s.

IT’S TIME TO CLEANSE
Our bodies are innately equipped with many detoxification systems designed By Dr. Kristina Barlow precisely to keep the body working optimally. Our immune system helps to control the biochemical processes found in the liver, kidneys, lungs (and sinuses), skin (sweat glands and oil ducts), lymphatics and intestines. One hundred years ago the combination of whole foods, pure water, physical labor, sun, clean air and simple living provided the body with most of what it needed to eliminate its normal toxic load. Modern society has thousands of chemicals overwhelming our water, air, soil, homes, workplaces and foods - chemicals which have either not been tested at all or have only been tested one at a time. Our bodies can handle small amounts of toxins, microbial overgrowths and debris from normal metabolism, but problems will occur when chronic chemical toxic overload and “superbug” infections combined with nutritional deficiencies overwhelm the system. Our bodies will respond at the tipping point with inflammation, pain, weight gain, tumors/ cysts, fatigue, mood and behavior changes, sleep disturbances and defense mechanisms - vomiting, diarrhea, sneezing, coughing and rashes. The illnesses resulting from toxic overload can be reversed as we remove the trash, give the body what it needs and stimulate the vital force.
TESTIMONIES Here are a few examples of people who have experienced positive results from Activating the body’s energy, Building the nutritional content and Cleansing the organs of toxins. ABCs! “These past 5 years I’ve suffered with severe depression caused by PCOS, Hashimoto’s disease and life issues. I had serious issues with adrenal fatigue and from there it was a downward spiral until I felt like I was in a black hole and absolutely hopeless. Doctors could not figure out the serious issues I had with allergies and hives every day. I was constantly on Benadryl and other allergy medicines. I opted to simply take pills from the drugstore. However, I noticed they were affecting my brain function and energy. I also had asthma and had to take my rescue inhaler everyday. I had inflammation and pain all over my body especially in my ankles. I went to see a specialist and they suggested surgery. Lastly, I cannot forget my severe stomach problems due to the horrible foods I ate, which inflamed my IBS every day. I started a detox program this past January and on day 3 I noticed the fog of depression had lifted. I was happy to experience energy and my family said to me that my face was changing. I now am able to think clearly, I have NO MORE hives, I haven’t used my Albuterol inhaler, I have NO stomach pains with the IBS, I am able to sleep without any problems, my feet do not hurt anymore and the inflammation has gone away. I feel like a new person and I’ve lost a good amount of weight in one month.” E-Rochester “My goals in my first InForm class were to lose weight, get relief from hot flashes, improve my energy, gain self-confidence and be able to sleep better at night. We started with the essential meal plan, looked at the cause and effect of our present day habits and learned about detoxification. The class called “Lose Weight by Losing Toxicity” had a profound impact on my life as a hairdresser. I can’t get over how great I feel since I got rid of the toxins and started eating ‘clean’. I lost 15 pounds because of this lifestyle and I feel amazing with improvement in all of my goals! I have positive energy - mentally, physically and emotionally. Healthy eating has led me to a new body and a new mind and I look forward to the future.” JB-Little Valley
INTERNAL CLEANSING 101: THE ABC’s (ONE MONTH)
A
Active the Body’s Energy
EXERCISE: Moving the body creates the conditions for the body to naturally breathe, stretch, circulate and sweat. Exercise will help the toxic organs to function properly by improving blood flow and removal of cellular debris for better function of the liver, lymphatics, digestion, elimination, lungs, muscles, brain and skin. Increased heart rate, respiratory rate and water intake will help the organs to flush the blood of toxins, fat and debris. Reduction of fatty tissue from aerobic exercise releases toxins so often stored in the fat. Walking, running, biking, hiking, rebounding, yoga, pilates and qi gong. SUPERFOODS: These are vibrant, nutritionally dense foods that have recently become widely available and are powerful sources of clean protein, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, antioxidants, essential fatty acids and amino acids. Regular consumption of these foods will increase the body’s vital force. Goji Berries, Cacao, Maca, Bee Products, Spirulina, Blue-Green Algae, Marine Phytoplankton, Aloe Vera, Hempseeds, Coconuts, Acai, Camu Camu Berry, Chlorella, Incan Berries, Kelp, Noni and Yacon.

DEEP BREATHING of Jin Shin Jyutsu: force the exhale and receive the inhale, 36 times, going deeper each time.
B
Build the Nutritional Content
PROTEIN: 30 grams of protein three to four times per day. A healthy way to achieve this first thing in the morning is through an organic vegan protein powder (Love and Peas). SIX NUTRIENTS: These core nutrients will ensure the body is getting what it needs to assist with the detox processes - Vitamins, Minerals, Enzymes, Probiotics, Antioxidants and Essential Fatty Acids. JUICING: Juicing or blending green vegetables provides a quick and easy way to digest a high amount of raw green vegetables, which are nutritive, healing and alkaline.
C
Cleanse the Organs of Toxins
HERBAL CLEANSES: CleanStart is a simple and gentle detox to cleanse the colon, liver and cells. This is especially great for those with food or respiratory allergies and constipation. For 14 days add a cleanse packet (psyllium, bentonite, aloe vera) to water and take three capsules (LBS II and Enviro-Detox) twice per day. Add Liquid Chlorophyll and Probiotic 11. Tiao He approaches liver, colon and tissue cleansing with Traditional Chinese Medicine herbs. It is great for weight loss, digestion and immunity. Add Mineral Chi Tonic to build “fire” in the body, stimulate the immune system, provide trace minerals and support the glandular system. Dieter’s Cleanse is great for cleansing the liver and the colon. It works well for constipation and those wanting to nourish the glandular system in order to stimulate metabolism processes. FOOD ELIMINATIONS: For one month eliminate sugar, wheat and processed foods. LIFESTYLE CHANGES: Remove chemicals from the home and the workplace. Toxic laundry detergents, bleach, cleaning products, perfumes, colognes and air fresheners. Replace with clean products. See EWG.org for approval of “clean” products. *Assess your progress by observing your overall health, energy, sleep, mood, behavior, libido and mental functions.

EDDIE MONEY
The Money Man Promises a Rockin’ Good Time at Seneca Allegany Casino
A Conversation with Eddie HULICK: It’s great to see you are heading this way for a show at Seneca Allegany Casino in March. MONEY: Yeah! We have a lot of fans and friends in that area … that should be a fantastic show I’m telling you right now! My phone’s been ringing off the hook about that show.
HULICK: One of the things I wanted to talk to you about is your play, “Two
Tickets To Paradise - The Musical”. That intrigues me when an artist writes a play based on their life story built around the soundtrack of their career. You also have seven new Broadway songs that were written specifically for this show. MONEY: Well the play was very well received and I got some pretty good reviews when we performed it at a college in Baltimore. We have a great cast and great dancers and terrific kids that play my sisters and the young Eddie Money. We shot a video of it and now we’ll just have to wait and see where it goes. It’s a lot like Jersey Boys.
.............................. FRIDAY | MARCH 6, 2015 By Melanie Hulick The Brooklyn born singer known as “The Money Man” is thrilled to be coming to Seneca Allegany Casino in Salamanca for one show only on March 6 at 7pm. “I have a lot of friends and a lot of great fans in the Allegany region,” said Money when I caught up with him recently. Money has been well known in the business since his debut album in 1977 with the huge hits “Baby Hold On To Me” and “Two Tickets To Paradise”. The album went double platinum and the rest, as they say, is history. There is no denying that Eddie Money sound … soulful and beat driven. His performing style remains at the top even after over 30 years in the business. Money has had 12 songs in the Top 100 Billboard charts and has recently added play writer to his resume with “Two Tickets To Paradise - The Musical”. The story is based on the singer’s life and he is hoping to get it to Broadway someday. Before deciding that music was his calling, he tried following in his dad’s footsteps and trained at the police academy and became a NYC Police Officer for two years. Not able to deny the music he loved so much, he left the force and headed to Berkley, California and started performing at local clubs until he signed a recording contract with Columbia Records in 1977. Today, Money still performs all around the world and still carries a passion for music that has kept him at the top of the list of great performers. It shows not only at his concerts, but through his words and personality, which I found out during our conversation. I thoroughly enjoyed talking with the singer and listening to his strong New York accent, and I loved the excitement in his voice as we talked about his play, how he views his life and what to expect from his show. We shared a few laughs - he has quite the sense of humor, which you will see when he talks about his show and his perfect day. One thing is for sure … Money has your “Two Tickets To Paradise” … even if it lasts only a couple hours inside the Events Center at Seneca Allegany Casino.
HULICK: Was it your idea to put this together? MONEY: I’d seen Jersey Boys and the Four Seasons reminded me of
the camaraderie I had with my original band from Long Island called “The Grapes of Wrath” and when we went off to California together. So I couldn’t help thinking that this reminds me of my own career, and of course I grew up with the Four Seasons and their songs - “Sherry Baby”, “Big Boys Don’t Cry” and “Walk Like A Man”. I mean, those songs were my childhood, you know?
HULICK: Is life good for Eddie Money? MONEY: Oh, yeah! I thank God everyday and I appreciate all the success I’ve had. My voice still sounds pretty good, I quit smoking cigarettes, I haven’t drank in five years … everybody’s happy but me! (laughs)
HULICK: (laughs) So you’re walking the line everyone wants you to walk? MONEY: Well, I mean I have kids now and I don’t want them thinking their
father was a drug addict or an alcoholic, you know? But yes, life is very good for me … I got a beautiful wife and the kids are doing good … I really can’t complain.
HULICK: What can we expect from your show? MONEY: When you go to an Eddie Money show you know you’re going to have a good time, number one … number two, my voice still sounds good … number three, I still got all my hair, which is nice (laughs).
HULICK: So you wouldn’t change anything about your life? MONEY: Yes I would … I would have paid my back taxes. HULICK: (laughs) Tell me what your perfect day would be? MONEY: Getting up and having fresh squeezed orange juice and an
omelet I didn’t burn. Go on a bike ride with my wife down to the beach, come back around 1pm and sit down and write some songs and do my piano exercises, which is very important … then about 3:30pm I’d jump on the treadmill for 40 minutes, which I don’t like … then I would probably go to the driving range and hit some golf balls. Then finally I would come home, and since my wife doesn’t want me to cook steak in the house, I would cook a big steak … in the house with some potatoes and have rice pudding for dessert … then watch Sports Center and go to bed.
.............................. Tickets to Eddie Money’s performance at Seneca Allegany Casino in Salamanca start at $25 and can be purchased through www.senecacasinos.com (click on Seneca Allegany). For more information on his newest album, visit www.eddiemoney.com.

Maple Weekend: A SWEET EVENT

State-wide Celebration Commemorates Production and Flavor Right in Our Backyard

By Erik Schmitz Maple Syrup is a rich and healthful treat that we are fortunate to have right in our own backyards. Celebrate its harvest and production March 21-22 and 28-29 during the New York State Maple Producers Association’s 20th annual Maple Weekends!
FLAVOR AND HEALTH BENEFITS New York makes some of the finest maple syrup in the country. Pure maple syrup boasts polyphenols and more than 54 antioxidants to quell inflammation - a contributing factor to such diseases as arthritis, cancer, and diabetes. Its high levels of zinc and manganese help with heart and immune health as well. Because maple syrup reflects soil quality, the rich calcium deposits throughout the state infuse its already nutrient-rich profile with additional health benefits, along with a gentler finish. Like beer, the darker the syrup, the more antioxidants it contains.
A LITTLE HISTORY Twenty years ago, Attica-based maple producer Greg Zimpfer co-founded Maple Weekend. He wanted to show how maple syrup is made amongst the NY family of producers. “If you’ve ever had a question about how pure maple syrup is made,” he commented, “you’ll get answers on maple weekend.” Zimpfer still chairs the event to this day. “It is a great day in the country for the entire family,” he said. New York is the second largest maple producing state in the country. Last year, 2.2 million taps produced 546,000 gallons of syrup, which accounted for 17% of the 2014 U.S. supply. Production was down slightly from 2013 due to freezes and snowstorms lasting through March. Total production from New York in 2013 totaled $26.025 million. Figures for 2014 will be released in June. Production of one gallon of maple syrup requires 40 to 45 gallons of maple sap. Sap officially becomes syrup when its sugar concentration reaches higher than 67%. Furthermore, New York State’s standards for grade have changed this year. Previously, coloring indicated grade. Of the four options - golden color with a delicate taste, amber color with a rich taste, dark with a robust taste, and very dark with a strong taste - the lightest three were categorized Grade A, while the darkest was categorized Grade B. As of this year, all four are categorized Grade A.
COUNTY-WIDE EVENTS LIST A variety of events will take place throughout Cattaraugus County to acquaint you with NY Maple Producers Association members. From Farmersville to Delevan, Hinsdale to Franklinville, several participants will show you everything you’ve ever wanted to know and then some - from how to make taffy, to old and new ways of crafting the sweet reward. Start your Maple Weekend adventure off with an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast featuring New York’s finest maple syrups. Find the closest farm or pancake breakfast site to you ... go to www.mapleweekend.com. Visit one or visit them all! After all, you do have four days. Events run from 10am-4pm each day.
Here are a few of our top picks: Moore’s Maple Shack Pancake House has served maple syrup since 1967. They are located at 10437 Galen Hill Road, Freedom, NY 14065. Barbara’s Maple Haven serves pancakes as well. This spot is located at 103 N Main Street, Franklinville, NY 14737. Brigg’s Hill Maple Farm is a classic stop located at 4420 Briggs Road, Little Valley, NY 14755. Boburg’s Maple is known for its maple cream and is located at 2298 Edmunds Road, Delevan, NY 14042. Wright Farms is celebrating its 125th year making syrup! They are located at 9053 Laidlaw Road, Franklinville, NY 14737. Maple Ridge Bison Ranch will not be participating in this year’s event; however, as a local producer of bison with minimal-human interaction and a back-to-basics, regenerative approach, owner and operator Jeff Goodyear also deserves your support. This season his efforts have been elsewhere on the farm. “I’ll fire up the wood burning arch next year,” says Goodyear, “so that people can try some buffalo sausage links with their pancakes and syrup.” Maple Ridge is located at 4789 Gile Hollow Road, Hinsdale, NY 14743. In addition to the delectable syrup itself, each location will provide maple offerings running the gamut from cream, sugar (including molded), coffee, tea, jelly, butters, suckers, cotton candy, snow, breads, fudges, nuts, and mousse. Some chefs incorporate maple syrup into savory dishes as well. One such place is perhaps the most well known of all Cattaraugus County maple-producers. Sprague Farm has been called “New York’s Maple Wonderland” and features a restaurant, gift shop, nearly 30,000 taps, and both traditional and modern syrup processing techniques. Their events this year will include taffy demonstrations, wagon rides to a 5,000 tap sugar bush stand near a traditional sugar shack, as well as a show of the farm’s current processing technique (which involves reverse-osmosis and a fancy evaporator). Make sure to try their renowned free-range turkey dinner. Adults may sample the in-house made maple chardonnay as well. Sprague’s is located at 1048 Route 305, Portville, NY 14770.
MAPLE IN APRIL: FRANKLINVILLE FESTIVAL
Franklinville will host its annual Maple Festival on the last weekend of April. Festivities begin Thursday in the high school auditorium with the crowning of the Maple King and Queen. Both Saturday and Sunday all-you-can-eat pancake and sausage breakfasts will be served from 7:30am-2pm at the elementary school. Saturday will also feature a 10K race and a 2-mile walk, as well as a parade with floats, music, and horses down Main Street. On Sunday, a car show will take place from 9am-4pm. Additional events include square dancing, chainsaw demonstrations, and a craft show. To become involved or for additional information, check out www.franklinvilleny.org. Not only is maple syrup a tasty treat, it is also a driving force of New York’s agricultural economy. Being available down the street or a few towns away, it is the quintessence of the “shop local” approach and philosophy. Whether you see a sign for maple syrup and stop by to help out a fellow New York farmer or patronize the modern and traditional facilities of Sprague’s Farms, you will be doing both yourself and your community a service. Enjoy!

More Experts, More Vendors, and a Few New Attractions ... It’s All Under One Roof for One Weekend Only
Friday Night Wine Walk, Handyman/woman contest on Saturday, and every 30-minute raffles on Sunday add to the excitement of this April event.
By Mary Heyl If this winter’s freezing temperatures have kept you a prisoner in your own home, then chances are, you’ve had ample time to observe the areas you’d like to upgrade once spring arrives. Fortunately, the Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting the perfect event to help homeowners and potential homeowners begin the process of remodeling, repairing, and decorating their dwelling … welcome to the Greater Olean Home Show. This three-day event is taking place at the William O. Smith Recreation Center located at 551 East State Street in Olean, NY April 17-19. Now in its 44th year, the Greater Olean Home Show is offering many different kinds of vendors who have exhibited their goods and services for several years, as well as some newcomers to the show. Attendees can look forward to a variety of area business that specialize in home upgrades including bathroom remodeling, contracting services, garage doors and openers, home décor, water treatment, window installation, and more. Dr. Green Lawn/Custom Turf of Salamanca, NY will be returning to the show again to offer visitors their services in weed control, lawn sodding, and lawn renovation. Another area favorite, Cutco Ka-Bar of Olean will present a selection of their famous household cutlery, which complements every kitchen. Culligan Water of Bradford, PA will return to the home show to offer attendees options in water treatment systems, including water softeners and water filtration systems. Nancy Morgan, GOACC Membership Coordinator, encourages attendees to visit the new vendors for 2015, which include home-based businesses that many female attendees are likely to enjoy. For example, Thirty-One Gifts will show attendees just how easy and attractive home-organization can be through their line of decorative totes, bins, bags, and purses. The skincare company Rodan & Fields will exhibit their sun protection products and skincare products for acne-prone and sensitive skin. Mobu Herbals of Olean will also be present with their wide selection of herbal remedies for everything from back pain to weight loss. According to Meme Yanetsko, Chief Operating Officer of GOACC, the home show committee has added themes to the event so visitors have something different to look forward to each day. On Friday, the home show committee has planned a Friday Night Wine Walk, where six vendors will host a winery/craft beer business that will serve their beverages to participants of the walk as they peruse the different booths. Still a work in progress, Saturday’s theme is the Handyman Contest Day, where local handymen and women will put their skills to the test through a variety of household repair challenges, vying for the title of best handyman/ woman as well as a cash prize! Sunday’s theme is the Every 30 Minutes: Raffles Day, when gift certificates donated by the show’s vendors will be given away to home show attendees. No matter how simple or grand your plans for home renovation are, the Greater Olean Home Show is an excellent starting point. According to Yanetsko, “The Home Show is a unique marketplace to shop, compare and save on a total selection of home-related products and services for building, remodeling, gardening and decorating. The show gives you more experts, vendors, and companies in one place at one time than any other opportunity in our area.” Indeed, even those planning to purchase a new home will be pleased to find lots of information and expert advice from ERA Team VP Real Estate, and those interested in building can take advantage of the services provided by Owl Homes Group of Allegany. From contracting services to decorative candles, the Greater Olean Home Show is a great opportunity to research various home improvement projects and shop for services all under one roof. Admission to the show is $3 for adults and $2 for students and seniors. For more information about the Greater Olean Home Show, call the Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce at 716-372-4433 or email member@oleanny.com.

Repurposed furniture and one-of-a-kind items are also available. Their hours are Monday-Friday 7am-5pm and Saturday-Sunday 8am-2pm.
The new Art Center and School on 54 Boylston Street in Bradford is now open and offering private and group fine art classes and workshops. Meet the instructors: Samila Sosic, an Adjunct Professor at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford who specializes in rural landscapes. Adriana Hernandez is an experienced portrait artist. Both instructors are professional Master of Fine Arts (MFA) artists trained in traditional and contemporary techniques. They both believe everyone has creative potential and they are ready to help you reach your artistic goals. As Samila Sosic explains, “our vision is to create a space to strengthen the social awareness of the visual arts, teaching students from age 6 to adults. I love Pennsylvania’s landscape. Wherever I look, I see countless shades of green. This land is a lifetime supply of inspiration for any artist who enjoys this subject.” As a portrait artist, Adriana Hernandez strives to create a painting that meets the aesthetic and compositional needs of the work. “I also seek a realistic and honest representation of my subject which captures and reinforces the personality of the client,” she explains. “The outcome is a painting that I feel proud of, and most important, a portrait that my client will cherish for a lifetime. Portrait commissions are all unique - the size, background detail, and the amount of additional content are all factors taken into consideration in the quotation of a commission work.“ Painting and drawing classes offered will be customized to the age and interest of the participants. Classes will range from a refresher course in the basics to classes designed to help a newcomer who has never picked up a pencil before to try drawing. Past classes have included: basic drawing, introduction to painting, head drawing which covered the basics of drawing a human face, to student painting which helps students develop a more personal approach to drawing and painting styles. A previous art class student, Diane Null, describes their style: “Samila is very much a hands-on instructor and enjoys sharing her enthusiasm and passion for art with her students. At Pitt-Bradford, she is very approachable and offers each student individual attention in helping them explore their creativity. In private art classes, Adriana and Samila present challenging opportunities to draw and paint set-ups by demonstrating how to break down the process. Both women are extremely talented, friendly, and more than willing to share their craft with students.” Students can enjoy classes in drawing, figure & portrait, acrylic and oil painting. Classes are designed for all age groups and levels. New classes start every two weeks. The Arts Center and School, located within the Bradford National Historic District, has convenient parking and is available to host private events and art parties, as well as different media workshops. In the future gallery exhibitions will be showcased and other local artisans will be able to rent studio space. Not sure where to begin? Red Bull All Snow Makes Its Way to Holiday Valley
No boxes. No rails. Just all natural snow features. That’s what snowboarders and freeskiers came out to play on in a jam format event held Feb. 21st. Congrats to everyone who competed, and props to the Holiday Valley Park Crew for an amazing build. Results at www.ellicottvillesnow.com. All Snow will continue its tour up the East coast, traveling to Mt. Snow in March and Loon Mountain in April.
