By Caitlin Croft If you ask anyone who has ever lived in or visited Ellicottville, it is without a doubt one of the most aesthetically pleasing areas in all of Western New York. And because of this, many professional, amateur and hobby photographers are drawn to our bustling little town to capture its essence - whether it be the countryside landscapes, the historical downtown architecture, the unique storefronts, or the vibrant personalities found within.

DiStefano now balances his innkeeper responsibilities with his growing love for the lens. Although a self-taught photographer, he sure had the best of influences. His uncle works in photojournalism and does freelance work; his brother owns Focus Photo based in Lancaster, PA, which provides a range of services from portraits to landscapes and everything in between. DiStefano’s passion leans more heavily in abstract, but he dabbles in portraits, landscapes and macro as well. (Macro photography is the art of taking close-up pictures that reveal details which can’t be seen with the naked eye. It requires the use of a “microscope-esque” lens to magnify the tiniest of objects, such as an insect or flower petal.) When the idea of creating a photographers guild first crossed DiStefano’s mind, his immediate reaction was to reach out to John Thomas of Lightsong Photography. Thomas responded with an enthusiasm for the idea and has assisted DiStefano every step of the way in planning the group. And just last month - February 2017 - the first meeting of the Ellicottville Photographers Guild was held inside The EVL Lodge. With seven interested individuals in attendance, DiStefano opened the meeting introducing himself, the Guild, and its mission. “I want people to have fun in an informal atmosphere where each member can grow their skills as a photographer,” he said. His vision for the Guild is to build a solid group that will meet once a month; each month focusing on a different aspect of photography (such as lighting) and/or hosting a guest speaker who can provide insight and help educate members on specific topics of interest. The Guild’s first meeting was comprised of a range of talent - from professional to amateur. A handful of attendees shared a selection of their works, which concluded with the group’s first assignment: bring 3 photos to be critiqued at the next meeting. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and as one of the individuals in attendance at the Guild’s “exploratory” meeting, I can attest to that proverb. Some of the shots showcased at the meeting were worth even more. DiStefano, originally from Leeper, PA, relocated to Virginia at the age of 19. Fast-forward to April of 2014, when DiStefano’s father gave him the opportunity to move to Great Valley, NY and manage a total of four rental units for him. This is where his Ellicottville story begins. He tended bar at Ellicottville Brewing Company on the side, which gave him the opportunity to meet locals and tourists alike. One year later, Tony was presented with yet another opportunity, which would expand his love of management. The EVL Lodge (former Kelly House) was in need of a manager. DiStefano jumped right in. “I love being an innkeeper. You get an opportunity to establish a relationship with the clients, many of whom have turned into friends.”

MARDI GRAS | WINTER CARNIVAL A weekend unlike any all year! Mardi Gras / Winter Carnival in Ellicottville takes the fun of spring skiing and couples it with engaging activities - on and off the slopes. Mark the weekend of March 10-12 on your calendar, and get yourself to Ellicottville to participate! The fun starts Friday evening with the 2nd annual Junior Bacchus Ball, a lively party produced by our local Chamber of Commerce that crowns the King and Queen of Mardi Gras, chosen by crowd applause. This year’s Bacchus Ball will be held upstairs at Madigan’s, which will be transformed into a legitimate Fat Tuesday celebration. Staff will dish up New Orleans style food, music and a costume contest to boot! Tickets are available at the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce office or online at www.ellicottvilleny.com. Head to Holiday Valley Saturday morning to kick off all the on-snow entertainment! Take the kids to get their faces painted at Customer Service before making your way to the Safety Patrol Cookout at the base of Yodeler. We know you’ll want to #thankasnowmaker, and you can do that at Yodeler’s Snowbar! The crew will start to pile up snow and shape it at the beginning of the month, and our beloved snowmakers will be ready and waiting to serve you a fresh cold one … nothing beats a Snowbar beer. Mo Porter performs live music at Yodeler from 4-8pm. The 25th Annual Mardi Gras Parade marches down Ellicottville’s main drag at 6:30pm Saturday, with costumes, floats and plenty of festive flair. It’s going to be tough to beat some of the floats from last year, so get your creative juices flowing and start building - applications are available on the Chamber’s website, www.ellicottvilleny.com. Waking up early Sunday morning will yield benefits, as you can fill up on a Holiday Valley pancake breakfast at the top of Champagne (courtesy again of the Ski Patrol). At 11:45am, you’re invited to line up for the Costume Parade at the top of Edelweiss. The parade will traverse its way down Mardi Gras slope, and this year HV is upping the ante on best costume - the winner will get a free Seasons Classic pass for next season! Head back over to Yodeler Sunday afternoon, because you’re not going to want to miss potentially the funniest event at HV all year - the Dummy Downhill. It’s simple: build a dummy, put it on skis, take it up Yodeler a bit, point it downhill and watch it fly. Registration for the Dummy Downhill is $5; find the sign-up sheet, as well as a complete schedule of the weekend’s events, at www.holidayvalley.com.

HOLIDAY VALLEY POND SKIMMING You’ve seen crashes, costumes and characters. Pond Skimming at Holiday Valley is a must-do at least once in your life! Lower Yodeler sets the stage on Saturday, March 18 … start a little bit up Yodeler slope and get your speed - you’ll need it - before keeping those #tipsup and ripping across an icy patch of water. Pond Skimming side effects may include, but are not limited to: side pain (from laughing); regular pain (from hitting the water); mood swings (watching the success and failure) and trouble hearing (from the crowd). Registration starts at 11am, and both skiers and snowboarders are welcome to participate. Minimum age is 8, but anyone under 18 will need a parent signature. All sign-ups will receive a free HV pool pass! Last year, we saw gorillas, bananas, 70s disco stars, and lots of high 5’s. There were even a couple presidential candidates. COMPETITIVE SPIRIT Inspired by a Love for Her Country and for High Speed Turns, Kaylie Buck Races Towards Her Future

DASH: I’m assuming Chris Naugle coached you at HoliMont, correct? What was the one biggest thing that he helped you to realize about your riding and how to improve it? KAYLIE: Chris Naugle was my coach at HoliMont for the past three seasons. To me, one of the most important things he taught me was about how to believe in myself and to always remember why we snowboard. He helped me develop a confidence for training and for racing that I have carried through with me. Naugle always reminds us about our passion for the sport and always helped us find time for fun, even while maintaining focus. DASH: So is it safe to say that HoliMont has been one of the pillars of your foundation in snowboarding success? KAYLIE: HoliMont has helped me progress as a racer and as a person, by providing an atmosphere where I can learn and have fun at the same time. This has helped to maintain both my passion and interest for this amazing sport. I have also made lifelong friendships through the club and would consider HoliMont a second home. By Dash Hegeman Like many teenagers, Kaylie Buck’s life is a complex juggling act of commitments to keep and schedules to adhere by. Dig deeper though and you’ll soon find that unlike most teenagers, the sixteen-year-old Kaylie has national pride and Olympic aspirations on her mind every morning when she wakes up; so it goes without saying that Ms. Buck doesn’t exactly live the average teenage life. Kaylie races for Team Canada on the NorAm Circuit but grew up on the slopes of HoliMont, where her parents had her on skis when she was only two-years-old. A love for winter was almost instantly instilled in Kaylie, and as her parents soon found out, a love of going fast followed suit. At the age of eight, with her snowboarding father as inspiration, Kaylie decided that she wanted to trade in her skis for a snowboard. “I immediately fell in love with the sport and I still wanted the feelings of going fast like I had when I was ski racing,” Buck stated. “So, less than a year after learning how to snowboard, I decided to join the HoliMont Snowboard Race Team.”

One-on-One with Kaylie DASH: What do you love the most about snowboarding? KAYLIE: After giving it a try, I was hooked. The things I love most about it are the feelings you get when you are flying through a course and the friendly, yet competitive environment around racing. DASH: What inspired you to dedicate such a large portion of your life to this type of competition? KAYLIE: I think I was inspired to dedicate myself to such high level of competition after watching older athletes have success in the sport. Now some fellow competitors on the NorAm circuit, Megan Farrell and Darren Gardner, came out of the HoliMont program as well and have showed me what it takes to make it to the next level in the sport. DASH: Speaking of inspiration, it must take a lot of internal inspiration to maintain your school schedule, have a social life, and race on the NorAm Circuit. KAYLIE: It is indeed difficult to maintain athletic, academic and social success, but because of my passion for the sport I have always found the discipline to balance my school work and training. Sometimes that could mean homework on the plane, reading in the car, and working online, but if I want to be traveling and competing, I know that I must continue my school work. My school has been very accommodating in helping me find alternative learning methods for continued success. As far as my social life goes, I have made many lifelong friendships in this sport, so maintaining those relationships is not hard as we are traveling and competing together. My friends at home have always been so supportive and encouraging towards me and I can always count on them to be cheering me on from home. DASH: Do you have any siblings? If so, do they race? KAYLIE: I have an older brother named Cole (18) , who was a ski racer until age 14 when he decided to become a volunteer coach to help teach the younger ski racers about the sport.

DASH: What is your favorite HoliMont memory? Your favorite run there? KAYLIE: I don’t think I can choose just one favorite memory, but one that stands out would be my first race ever. I remember down the big start gate for the first time on my snowboard, Bruce Gardner giving the start cadence and going down the course. When I got to the bottom all the parents, friends and older riders were there to cheer me on and it was so much fun. After that, one of my favorite runs at HoliMont has always been Fall Line (the race slope). I also always love to cruise down Sunset. DASH: The next time you’re in Ellicottville, where are you going to eat? KAYLIE: If I could pick anywhere to eat in Ellicottville, I would choose to go to Dina’s for dinner for some spaghetti and meatballs, and Watson’s Chocolates for dessert. DASH: And if you’re in the mood for a little retail therapy in town ... KAYLIE: It depends on what it is I am shopping for, but I would say I do visit Mud, Sweat n’ Gears quite often when I’m in town. DASH: Spoken like a true race enthusiast. That has to be music to Miguel’s ears. Speaking of music, what’s the Top 5 on your playlist right now? KAYLIE: 5 songs I love are: Don’t Stop Believing by Journey, Roar by Katy Perry, Hall of Fame by The Script, I’ll Show You by Justin Bieber, and Believe by Mumford & Sons. DASH: Any sponsors you want to give a shoutout to? What gear (board, boots, bindings) are you rocking right now? KAYLIE: I do not have any sponsors yet but I am currently riding SG boards, on a VIST plate with F2 bindings. I ride in UPZ boots and I can always trust POC helmets to protect my head. DASH: Who’s your snowboarding hero? Why? KAYLIE: I don’t know if I really have a hero, but I would definitely say that my biggest mentor is Rich Evanoff. He has been my coach for the past season and really showed me the ropes of the sport. He has so much passion for snowboarding and he loves everything about it. En route to the World Cup, he had a shoulder injury that held him back. During his road to recovery he came to Ellicottville to coach and is now making a comeback on the NorAm tour. It is so inspiring to see my coach becoming my teammate and fellow competitor and I am so proud to have had him as a mentor. DASH: You’ll be heading to the Czech Republic soon for the Jr. Worlds. Is this the first time you’ve been a part of that competition? What are you most looking forward to doing on this trip (besides winning)? KAYLIE: This will be the first time I have competed in this type of competition. I am excited to see the difference in the level of competition on an international scale. I am looking forward to competing amongst the best junior snowboarders from around the world as well as getting to represent my country.

Editor’s Note: After this interview was conducted, Kaylie’s father, Steven Buck, reported that Kaylie rode in the World Jr Champs in Czech on February 20th, and placed 6th. This was the best result by a female North American rider in the last 10 years! Kaylie was also the youngest rider in the top 10. Congratulations Kaylie! And best wishes moving forward with your racing career.

Megan Farrell and Darren Gardner have both qualified to compete at the World Championships. The race is being held in Sierra Nevada, Spain near the city of Granada. It is the highest level competition and only held every 2 years for qualifying athletes. Megan and Darren have been competing on the World Cup circuit this season. They are just returning from a pre-Olympic event in Korea. They are heading for a World Cup in Turkey in early March before heading to Spain and then Germany for the final World Cup races of the season. Go Megan and Darren!

Congratulations to Patricia Mangan (HoliMont) who has been selected to participate in the World Junior Championships in Are, Sweden, March 8-14. Patricia will be part of a team of 15 athletes from the USA who will be headed to Norway and then Sweden to compete in this year’s events.

By Pat Morgan Forget about the roller coaster weather we experienced throughout February … Winter is still very much alive and well here in Western New York, which is evident by the enthusiastic crowds gracing the slopes of Holiday Valley, HoliMont, and the downtown village streets. Several iconic specialty retailers are happy to call Ellicottville home, including Dekdebruns Snow Sports, which has been a staple of the main drag since opening its doors in the basement of the Ellicottville Inn in 1961. We recently caught up with the father/daughter team of Greg and Kylie Dekdebrun (pictured at left), fresh off of a successful Presidents Week of retail, to pick their brains on the latest and greatest in product, and to ask about the rumors of Greg’s retirement … One of the goals for every specialty retailer, is to of course cultivate and care for their loyal customer base, but to also hand pick proprietary brands and products that set them apart from the rest. Dekdebruns is certainly no different, which is why they’re proud to be a day one dealer for APEX Boots. Perhaps no one is looking more forward to the end of the winter season here in Ellicottville than Greg Dekdebrun himself, who has announced he’ll be retiring from the shop, which has been his second home since its opening in 1961 by his father, Al. From 1986 forward, Greg and his wife Patti have owned and operated the shop, but after a lifetime of specialty retail, Greg thinks it’s time to kick his feet up (a little bit, anyhow). When asked what he planned to do with all his impending free time, he replied, “When the snow comes again, I’m going to do that thing called skiing.” CY

Ah yes. Anyone in the ski retail industry knows … finding time to get on the hill is very few and far between. Greg, you’ve definitely earned it! One message Greg wanted to convey to his customers, is that Dekdebruns Snow Sports isn’t closing its doors. It will continue to remain a staple in the business district of Ellicottville. CANALE DESIGNS: YOUR LOCAL WOODWORKER Matt Canale Thrives on Building Relationships ... and Rustic Furniture

EVL ENTERTAINMENT: REINVENTING THE LOCAL BEAT DJ Tyler Swift and DJ Obi One Two Join Forces

Matt Canale has worked with wood for as long as he can remember. Like with most kids at a young age, he found joy in the simplest of things - swinging a hammer and pounding nails into a board. But while most adolescents leave that passion at a hammer and nail, Canale’s passion for woodworking grew. Graduating from his grandfather’s basement to helping his handyman father around their house, he ultimately found a career path in it.

When they’re good, they’re really good. But when they’re bad, they are cringingly bad. DJing is a profession that requires more than just the ability to plug an auxiliary cord from a laptop to a speaker and press play. You’ve got to toe the line between infectious enthusiasm and borderline creepiness while taking (ignoring) a slew of requests. Some nights, the crowd is great - vibing to the beats you’ve mixed together - and others, you’re asked to play Buckcherry 12 times. But the good DJ takes it all in stride and mixes on.

Throughout high school, Canale dove deeper into carpentry and remodeling. While studying Liberal Arts at Monroe Community College in Rochester, carpentry helped him get through. And one day, a revelation. “The more I worked with wood when I was at school, the more I realized that this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life,” Canale told me. “It got me through school. When I picked up my first job in woodworking - a cabinet maker whom specialized in fine finishing - that’s when I knew I really wanted to get into it.” Almost a decade ago, Canale moved to Ellicottville to work with a furniture designer. He traded time between that and working for a family member’s carpentry and remodeling company, learning and evolving his skill set along the way. Now, custom furniture building (Canale Designs on Facebook) is his bread and butter. “For the most part, a customer will give me an idea and I’ll take it from there,” he said when asked how he designs his pieces. “The rustic side of furniture is so cool - taking a massive slab of wood and furnishing a dining room table or countertop. I took my 15-year background in cabinet building and held onto it … that’s what I apply to my work.” Working with rustic furniture requires viewing through a different lens. Putting a square edge on something and saying “it looks fine” is easy; using the wood at your disposal to create the perfect match is not. When it comes to Canale’s creative process, he lets the wood do the work. “You’ve got to let the slab of wood lead,” he said. “The features, the curves … they tell you what it will be good for. When I go into a house and ask what the customer wants, I start to visualize what would blend in best with its surroundings. I let the wood tell me what it wants to do.” If you ask Canale about a favorite piece he’s ever done, forget it. As is the case with most creatives, there is no favorite - each piece, which you’ve put heart and soul and sweat into, finds a spot in your heart. “Everything I’ve ever done is custom,” he said. “That’s the beauty of the process. Each one you work with grows on you, and you almost hate to see them go (laughs). But you never know what’s next in line. Things as small as a rustic floor lamp, which I made out of Iron Wood. The first one I did, I didn’t want to sell it! But since then, I’ve made about a dozen, each one different than the last. Those small pieces catch a person’s eye … and that’s where the business grows.” Harnessing the prowess he’s accumulated through the years, Canale built a 9-foot vanity out of walnut and cherry. The weeks of finish and the hours of creative process yielded a gorgeous finished product. And like with most pieces he’s done, he fell in love with it ... “Things like that (the vanity) lead to more work,” he said. “Once I did an entire kitchen. Another, a customer wanted two dozen (!) pieces for their chalet. But at the end of the day, you build that relationship - and that’s what is most important to me.” Canale’s wife, a schoolteacher, sets up a farm stand in the summer by their house in East Otto. While talking to him about this, I got the vibe that Canale and his family are the personification of the American Dream. Taking a skill set, fine-tuning it and capitalizing. And while the bottom line is paramount (in what business is it not?), you can tell that this grounded woodworker cares more about the relationship and finished product than he does about the money. “I like to keep my work local,” he said. “Even if I expanded into other states or even nationwide, I’m not sure I would want to. A major part of why I do this is to build that repertoire with my customer so I can provide the perfect piece. It all starts there.” And if Canale isn’t in his wood shop, chances are you’ll find him fishing for steelhead in the local creeks, or skiing the slopes of Holiday Valley with his daughter. Tyler Burns (DJ Tyler Swift) and John Nelson (DJ Obi One Two) started spinning tracks a few years ago, and their relationship - and skill set - has transformed into a powerhouse one-two (get it?) punch. Refusing to limit themselves to late night bar sets, Burns and Nelson created EVL Entertainment. They’re aiming to become the premier DJ name for weddings, parties, bars and events. We sat down with Burns and Nelson to give us the inside track (I am full of terrible puns) on the DJ lifestyle and the newly formed EVL Entertainment ... SPENCE: How’d you get your start? TYLER: Originally, I just started messing around at home with some basic DJ equipment. I met John randomly one night when I was filling in playing tunes at our local watering hole (Madigan’s.) After that, we hit it off and John has, in a way, become a mentor to me. He’s helped me a lot in how much knowledge I’ve gained. SPENCE: Primarily, where are you DJing currently? JOHN: Right now, we DJ every Friday and Saturday night at Madigan’s. But we’ve done events from weddings to dances and really everything in between. The goal is to become the leading DJ group for any event in the surrounding area. SPENCE: Tell me about EVL Entertainment. JOHN: EVL Entertainment is the name of our DJ group. Event DJs haven’t changed much in years - it always seems to be that iPod shuffle mentality, that 80s radio host vibe. We want to change the way people think about their entertainment. Things like personality, premium lighting/sound, and a fresh vibe are all a part of the package we offer. SPENCE: What kind of equipment do you use? TYLER: Like with anything, you’ve got to have the latest and greatest in software and hardware. It makes the experience for the clientele that much better, so we’re always bringing in new equipment to enhance the experience. SPENCE: Where’s the best place you’ve ever DJ’d? TYLER: For myself, it honestly is probably Madigan’s on Mardi Gras Weekend or Fall Festival Weekend. We pack the place full and just have a good time … those are the times we bring our A-Game, put together some awesome dance tracks and let it rip. SPENCE: What’s your DJ personality? Are you low-key and let the music talk, or do you try and hype the crowd up? TYLER: I’d say between John and myself we have a pretty great balance. We always try to let the music do the talking, because nobody wants to hear you blab on for hours. But John is a great hype man, and always strives to get the crowd motivated. SPENCE: Speaking of music, where do you get your inspiration from? JOHN: We spend a lot of time sifting through music to find the best combinations. We love listening to other Dj sets, whether they’re live or prerecorded. SPENCE: Who’s your favorite DJ and why? TYLER: My all-time favorite DJ is GirlTalk. He takes all sorts of music and mashes it into one song, a kind of music that can please everyone .. it’s super impressive what he can do. Going from 90s hip-hop to 2000s alternative and back in under a minute is so cool. SPENCE: Anything else you’d like to add? JOHN: EVL Entertainment is now booking for 2017. The parietal cells of the stomach produce hydrochloric acid (HCl) and intrinsic factor (IF). HCl is needed to properly break down proteins and minerals into free amino acids and n it! ionic minerals, respectively. The pH of the stomach should be around 5.0, quite acidic to accommodate this function. The problem with most people is NOT high HCl, but actually, low HCl. Low HCl causes malabsorption of minerals (especially iron, copper, calcium and zinc) and proteins. When proteins are not broken down into free amino acids, this leads to elevated cortisol followed by adrenal fatigue. Low HCl also prevents the valve from closing between the large and small intestines, allowing bacteria to migrate into the small intestine and causing Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). Low HCl with low IF causes malabsorption of vitamins B12 and folate. If most people actually have too little HCl in the stomach (especially those over the age of 50) then antacids and acid blocker medications only worsen digestive problems (as many people often report), including poor digestion of proteins and minerals with an increase in H. pylori bacterial overgrowth in the upper stomach. If you have low HCl you will experience food sitting heavy in the stomach; acid indigestion in the stomach one hour after eating; gas, bloating and belching after eating; SIBO and yeast overgrowth. Low HCl will then trigger a negative feedback system to cause the parietal cells to produce more HCl. GERD occurs when acid from the stomach flows upward into the lower part of the esophagus due to a hiatal hernia. This is extremely common. A sliding hiatal hernia occurs when the stomach slides through the diaphragm (made for the esophagus) and causes the entrance into the esophagus to remain open. Symptoms of GERD include heartburn, difficulty breathing, belching, bloating, poor appetite, cravings for sugar, constipation or diarrhea, IBS and inflammatory bowel disease. Having GERD can also contribute to irritability, depression, brain fog, ADHD, inflammation, headaches, allergies, asthma, skin issues, chronic sinusitis, weight loss resistance and recurrent infections. One half of people’s health concerns in the U.S. can be improved by healing the gastrointestinal system, both digestion and elimination. Almost all chronic and degenerative illnesses have a direct link to the gastrointestinal tract. Optimum digestion in the stomach, as well as the pancreas and gallbladder, will bring better health to the small and large intestines. Poor digestion leads to increased toxicity in the intestines from bacterial overgrowth and undigested proteins. Let’s look at how to improve the function of the stomach in order to eliminate GERD and improve the health of the body’s eliminative functions and organs - the small and large intestines ... Do this for 4-6 weeks for the best results. Suspect a hiatal hernia when someone experiences chronic GERD, is tall and skinny or has asthma, COPD, cancer, heart problems, bone and joint issues and autoimmune conditions. It is difficult to take a deep breath if a hiatal hernia is present. Drink half of your body weight IN ounces of water/day. Drink 16 ounces of water 2030 minutes before each meal for best digestion. Dehydration can lead to poor protein digestion, gastritis and a hiatal hernia.

STEELHEAD SCHOOL KICKS OFF TROUT SEASON

Trout season opens on Saturday, April 1, and Cattaraugus County has a wealth of prime fishing spots that are sure to keep you busy this spring. Cattaraugus Creek is known for having the best steelhead trout fishing opportunities in New York State, and you can make the most of it with Adventure Bound onthefly in Ellicottville. Salamanca at Seneca Allegany Casino for your show there. ORLANDO: Thank you sweetheart. I am looking forward to it too! I like that venue … I have played there before and I have also played at Seneca Niagara Casino, which you know. HULICK: You have had a Buffalo connection that started over 55 years ago. ORLANDO: My first trip to Buffalo was on Allegany Airlines from La Guardia. It was 1961

and the disc jockey at the time on WKBW was Danny Nevereth. I was promoting my first record, “Half Way to Paradise” which Danny played here. HULICK: 2016 was very good to you as far as honors and awards. ORLANDO: It was one heck of a year. One of the special ones was receiving the Casino

Entertainer of the Year by all the casinos in the country.

HULICK: That’s terrific Tony! That must make you feel good. ORLANDO: Yes, the reason this one was a nice one for me was because I got my first

Entertainer of the Year Award in Las Vegas in 1977, and received it in 1982, 2002, 2008 and then last year. If you look at that spread of years between them it is incredible … even I took a step back and thought this has been a pretty consistent career. (laughs) HULICK: I know you, and you don’t do what you do for the awards, but nevertheless I

Orlando has been doing this for 56 years! He’s done it all - recording, touring, had his own variety television show, “Tony Orlando & Dawn”, starred in two Tony award winning Broadway shows, “Barnum” and “Smokey Joe’s Café,” and even appeared in multiple motion pictures. The awards have been many, including five number-one singles, 50 million singles sold, 3 platinum albums, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The singer also received the first and second People’s Choice awards in his category as well as the first American Music award and the next three with Tony Orlando & Dawn, and he has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame … whew! I first interviewed Orlando in December of 2004. I had the pleasure of meeting him over coffee in January 2005, and we became instant friends. He took me under his wing and was instrumental in helping me achieve my dream of interviewing entertainers with his support and advice. We spoke by phone about him returning to Seneca Allegany and we talked about 2016 and all the accolades that were given to him, which he deserves more than anyone I know … and I told him how proud I was about one of his first appearances of 2017, which you will read about in the following conversation. Orlando, as an entertainer, is the hardest working person I have ever seen … and Orlando as a person is the kindest, most generous man you will ever know. I always tell him that “he makes my heart smile” … and he truly does. “I hope I’ve been a good person through these 50 plus years,” Orlando said. “I’ve tried to be. I hope the audiences know I care about them and every single time I face them it is an important moment to me … not just a show. Those moments to me are for them.”

would like the readers to know how amazing your career has been. You received one of the highest honors last year … the Congressional Medal of Honor - the Bob Hope Award. ORLANDO: Yes, that was an amazing one. HULICK: One of the highlights of the past year that I was excited for you was playing at

the Armed Forces Ball for the inauguration. ORLANDO: That was something. I was working for not only the official inauguration, which was my third, but to be able to be the only celebrity performer invited to play for our armed forces and first responders - firefighters, police - all in one night was incredible! I was so honored to be asked and so honored to do it. Looking out and seeing five Chiefs of Staffs, Lieutenants and Generals knowing you were there to provide them entertainment was really something, and to be able to give thanks for what all of these wonderful people do for all of us was a very humbling experience for me. They put their lives on the line for us. HULICK: You have not only contributed so much to the entertainment world, your work on

behalf of veterans is a big part of who you are. ORLANDO: To me, if you don’t take this blessing and make it work for people who are in need or are less fortunate, just do something that helps human beings, then this blessing should not have been given to you. My whole passion for veterans is post war experience. I feel for that guy or girl who served their country and comes home and doesn’t get their due. I would like to see a day in this country where a soldier can take their family anywhere - amusement parks, restaurants, movie theaters and go into that establishment for free. I’m not talking Veterans Day. I mean a separate day for us to say thank you and let them enjoy a day with their families. I’d like to get that done - a Veterans Appreciation Day. HULICK: You have done so much through these 50 plus years, not just making records

and touring. One of my favorite parts of your career was your variety television show, “Tony Orlando & Dawn.” You had some incredible guests on that show. I would like to throw a name out and you tell me the first thing that comes to your mind. Jackie Gleason. ORLANDO: He was the scariest person I ever worked with because it was the first biggerthan-life star. There was a tough side to him, but he ended up being a very good friend in the end. He used to call me every week in my dressing room and give me a critique of what I did wrong last week. Silly things like, “make sure your tuxedo lapels are not rolled, but flat, you look thinner.” Another one was, “don’t wear silver zippers, they shine on camera.” (laughs) HULICK: (laughs) He was looking pretty close! ORLANDO: (laughs) Yes, pretty close! Frank Sinatra used to tell me things like that too.

He told me to wear a red hanky in my tuxedo pocket - it means you’re in the club. If you noticed, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. always wore a red hanky. HULICK: Do you still do that? ORLANDO: When I wear my tux I do. In fact, I still have the one Frank gave me and I

wear it when I’m on television or award shows.

HULICK: Does it seem like 50 plus years and did you see yourself doing all that you have

done?

ORLANDO: It’s gone by so fast. I saw myself on Broadway, I saw myself making records

and touring and being on television. I had all those dreams come true, every one of them. I worked hard for it, yes, but I have no complaints. So here it is 50 some years later and I’m happier than I’ve ever been. I’m going to be 73 years old, which is still two years younger than Paul McCartney (laughs), and I still love to work on the road, to perform. And as long as people want to come and see me, I’m going to be there.

The green of spring is different in the forest - light and fresh with a touch of sunshine on the leaves. Wildflowers add to the color; the songbirds return to fill the air with music. Experience this season of rebirth and renewal in the beautiful Allegheny National Forest of northwestern Pennsylvania by planning just the trip your heart and soul desires. TAKE A HIKE! One of the best ways to experience the rebirth and renewal of the Forest is along a woodland trail. For casual hikers, first-time birders, and families with young children, Timberdoodle Flats Interpretive Trail offers two loops totaling 1.5 miles. This interpretive birding trail is named for the timberdoodle, the nickname of the American woodcock. The timberdoodle is just one of the many birds you might get a glimpse of along the trail. The Woodcock Loop is marked with a yellow woodcock insignia and features 12 interpretive stops. The shorter Bluebird Trail is suitable for wheelchairs or walking assistance equipment. This trail features six interpretive stops. Both trails are a great way to get outside to enjoy the beauty of spring. Trailhead parking is located along PA Rt. 59. Travel PA Rt. 219 south, turn west onto Rt. 770, the road will merge with Rt. 59, continue west, watch for the large trailhead sign on the left. Parking is at the trailhead. Crook Farm Trail is a 3-mile loop along the banks of Tunungwant Creek - commonly referred to by the locals as “the Tuna.” One might spy the occasional American Bald Eagle soaring overhead. The trail, with a crushed stone surface, circles the east and west banks of the creek and is rated easy. In the springtime wildflowers will emerge adding sweeps of color along the trail. This is a favorite trail for families with dogs, so please be respectful to other hikers and keep your dog on a leash.

Crook Farm Trail is as easy 3-mile loop along the banks of the Tunungwant Creek in Bradford, PA.

Trailhead parking is easy to find. Travel Rt. 219 south, take the Foster Brook exit, turn left off of the exit, the trailhead parking will be on the left. The Kinzua Valley Trail is a 7-mile linear trail for hiking and biking and is for those seeking a more challenging hike. Located along the banks of the scenic Kinzua Creek, the surface is crushed limestone. This hike will take you deep into the forest. Kinzua Creek is a favorite with the locals for fishing. Trailheads are located at the village of Westline, with the trail connecting to Red Bridge Campground, another favorite fishing spot in the Allegheny National Forest. A trail map is available at kinzuavalleytrail.org. Both cabins and campsites are available for rent at Red Bridge Campground. This campground also offers boating and fishing access to the shoreline of the Allegheny Reservoir. Reservations can be made online at recreation.gov. Red Bridge Campground

Hector Run Waterfall

To reach the trailhead for the Kinzua Valley Trail, travel PA Rt. 219 south to the intersection with Westline Road. Make a right-hand turn onto Westline Road, travel to the Westline Inn where you will find the trailhead. It is approximately 18 miles south of Bradford, PA. Westline Inn is a wonderful restaurant which also has overnight accommodations available. Learn more at westineinn.com.

HECTOR RUN WATERFALL During the spring rains and the melting of the winter snow, Hector Run Waterfall will have water plummeting off of two different faces. A strange geologic formation surrounds this waterfall, with a height of approximately 22 feet; the waterfall is set amidst a collection of large boulders. This waterfall flows over a rectangular shaped rock face. When you hike in to view the falls you will experience a “lost world” type of feeling. When water levels are low the flow goes down to just a trickle. Parking for the falls is located about two miles down a dirt road, which starts in the town of Ludlow along PA Rt. 6 in McKean County, Pennsylvania. This is a challenging hike for experienced hikers. The best way to find the falls is by using the GPS coordinates: 41.6853-78.975067.
