photo/EVLRocks.com If you don’t get your fill of beer and wine at Ellicottville’s Fall Festival (Oct. 11-12), another annual tradition here in good ‘ol E’ville is the ever popular Beer & Wine Festival at Holiday Valley Resort. This event has gained major popularity since its inception ten years ago. Holiday Valley, Ellicottville Brewing Company and Southern Tier Brewery will once again host the event at The Lodge (formerly the Clubhouse Chalet / Main Lodge) on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013 from 3:30-7:30pm with live music by Big Leg Emma.
By Pat Morgan Do you like beer? I know I do, which makes this event a perfect fit, as you’ll be able to get down on over 30 of the best New York State and American craft breweries and wines from New York, Southern Ontario and Ellicottville vintners. The festival is broken into two parts: the first being Friday’s Beer & Food Pairing Dinner, now in its 6th year. This event has a rather unique spin this year, with Chef Dave Seitz and staff taking on the challenge of creating a local focus with the presentation. The event will focus on unbelievable flavor combinations of nationally recognized craft beers, while adding classic seasonally focused LOCAL cuisine. With its intimate vibe, those in attendance will be able to interact with brewmasters on-hand, eager to tell the story of why each pairing is the perfect compliment. The challenge Seitz has taken on is to stay within a 60-mile radius of sourcing these items, focusing on all the incredible resources we have locally. Amish Valley View cheeses, Amish breads, Wendell’s poultry, grapes from Silver Creek, and Watson’s Chocolates are just some of the unique, hand-picked items that will greet attendees. Unlike the Beer & Wine Festival, the Brewer Meet & Greet will be held up at the Tannenbaum Lodge, beginning at 6pm with light hors d’oeuvres; the food & pairing stations will open at 7pm. This is a ticketed event, coming in at $65 - well worth the investment in a culinary evening you won’t soon forget! Branching out a bit from the local offering, brewers come from far and wide, with representatives from Sierra Nevada, Magic Hat, Great Lakes, Erie Brewing, Saranac, Southern Tier, John Harvard’s, Ithaca, Roerhbac, Woodchuck, Custom Beer Crafters, Butter Nutts, Original Sin Cider, Harpoon, Voodoo, Smutty Nose, Long Trail, Hebrew and Otter Creek. If after sampling all of those offerings you still didn’t find something that pleased your palate (fat chance), there are also multiple vintners on-hand to pour you that perfect glass of vino to compliment your next meal or conversation. Adding to the local flair will be the Winery of Ellicottville where I recently popped by and found the gang busily getting ready for the fall season. Dom and Sam were proud to say that they would of course be participating in the Beer & Wine Festival again this year, featuring their wellrounded selection, including “EVL White” (which last year won Double Gold at the Indy International Wine Competition.) Additionally, they went on to explain that they would also be pouring “EVL Red” and “EVL Blue” (America!) which is actually a blueberry wine … something different indeed! Alongside the Winery of Ellicottville, you’ll also be able to check out offerings from several of New York’s award winners like Miles and Fulkerson, plus Heron Hill, Fox Run, and Merrit.

One thing I hope is that if you’re attending the event, you get to and from it safely. Local law enforcement agencies won’t hesitate to give you what you deserve if you get caught driving a little pickled. So, with that said, take advantage of the complimentary shuttle service from the Inn at Holiday Valley, Tamarack, SnowPine, Wildflower, or Alpine Meadows Condo complexes to the event. After the event, there will be shuttles returning guests to their Holiday Valley accommodations as well as into the village of Ellicottville running until 2:30am, with pick-up and drop-off in the village in front of Balloons Restaurant & Night Club. With all this information, now the only thing left to do is get out that card and purchase your ticket today. Pre-sale tickets are available for the 10th Annual Beer & Wine Festival for $50. Don’t wait - this event will sell out, so with no chance of extra tickets being released for it, buy now! Every Year There’s Something New!
With Added Snowmaking and the Latest Technology, Holiday Valley Can Throw Out Some Serious Ground Cover QUICK STAT: In ideal conditions, Holiday Valley can make enough snow to cover an entire football field in snow 2.8-feet high . . . IN ONE HOUR.
The majority of people that visit Holiday Valley experience first-hand how awesome it is. But until you look closely, only then does one start to notice the improvements made on an annual basis. Sometimes the changes are subtle (snowmaking guns) and sometimes they’re not (the Main Lodge). One thing is for certain, though - there is purpose behind each decision made, regardless of the gravity it holds to a visitor’s overall resort experience.
By Spencer Timkey
Holiday Valley’s propensity to improve and reinvest in itself is nothing new. Lately, the monetary focus has revolved around enhancing the resort’s snowmaking capabilities. Before, it was impressive. Now, it is remarkable; an exceptional facet of the resort’s tenacity. Over the past 44 years, Holiday Valley has spent a whopping $10 million on snowmaking alone. Snow Economics, Inc., the Massachusetts-based company that produces the HDK Klik snowmaking guns, can boast that its products are at over 400 resorts around the world. Holiday Valley is one of such. Now with a grand total of 430 tower guns and 50 ground guns, the automated system can be turned on or off with the simple tap of a finger on an iPhone. The resort added 146 towers this year, on runs such as Sunrise, Candy Cane, Cindy’s, Foxfire and more. Here’s a stat that will make your jaw drop: in ideal conditions, the guns can make enough snow to cover an entire football field in snow 2.8-feet high IN ONE HOUR. “These guns really add a new dynamic,” said Pat Morgan, Director of Youth Marketing and Terrain Park Manager. “We can now cover 95% of the resort with snowmaking, which is astounding as it is awesome. Being automated, we can turn them on if we get a solid window of weather and not have to worry about them being on all night.” On the topic of snowmaking and grooming, Holiday Valley also added a new grooming Cat. The PistenBully 600, which boasts a new dynamic assist boon mechanism (fancy words for a winch), offers the crew an entirely new way to groom steep terrain. “The winch goes sideways across a head wall, which allows for an unprecedented grooming technique,” Morgan said. “Typically, groomers will slide down the head wall. But with the new winch system, there can be an even, smooth groom all the way across.” Improved snowmaking and grooming make for a better day on the hill, which in turn makes for a better experience overall, and that (and this may be most important) makes for a stoked family that’s bound to return. There is a purpose to everything. “The mountain crew also spent a lot of time this summer clearing out the glades,” Morgan said. “That offers more skiable terrain to our visitors while adding some diversity to the type of terrain that’s here.” Jane Eshbaugh, Holiday Valley’s director of marketing, described the process that goes into the capital improvement planning. “We recently met with the Jack Johnson Company of Park City,” she said. “We’ve worked with them for over 25 years. They do a conceptual long-range plan, and sometimes we’ll do the stuff and sometime we won’t. But we take those ideas and couple them with ideas and suggestions we get from our employees and create a hybrid plan that benefits everyone. We want to always be able to enhance the experience for our visitors.” While the Cabana Bar - which was slated for a makeover this fall - will wait until spring, there are key things Holiday Valley did this summer to ensure it stays in the top 5 on the East Coast. “Obviously, we can’t do everything,” Eshbaugh said. “With any other business, we’ve got to prioritize and make sure that what we’re doing will benefit the resort long-term. Sometimes the decisions are easy, sometimes they’re not. The bottom line is the season before. If we had a good year and we can make a sound investment, we’re going to.” Besides all of the things written above, Holiday Valley also has added a skating rink at the
Tubing Park, remodeled the rooms at the Inn, and the Main Lodge had its finishing touches put on. All in all, $3.1 million. Pretty darn impressive. But wait, there’s more! You didn’t think we’d forget about the terrain parks, did you?
INSIDE THE PARKS
When the new HDK guns were brought in for this year, it was decided that Foxfire should have its fair share. “The crew (terrain park crew) is so stoked to have some automated guns on Foxfire,” Morgan said. “These guns will allow us to create a better product on the hill. Instead of having to wait a couple of weeks into the season to get the park open, we can fire the guns up and possibly have it up and running by opening day. Which would be just so awesome.” The snow from the HDK guns is superior to many other brands of snowmakers. When you add better quality snow to an area that can now attain better coverage - and factor how quickly you can get these things done - it equates to a much better park. “When the crew has the snow to work with, they can focus on the betterment of the jumps, rails, etc. - which creates a better experience for our skiers and riders.” In the snowsports industry, progression is critical. We’ve got to get our young guns on skis and snowboards and make sure that they have a killer time - or else, they’re not going to come back. How are we going to find the next Travis Rice if a kid quits after two times on the hill or mountain? In addition to that, learning the terrain park craft can be an unbelievably frustrating endeavor. One bad fall is all it takes to totally eliminate any notion of continuation. Holiday Valley knows this. Holiday Valley adapted. Enter the Burton Riglet Park. Installed next to the Outpost on School Haus (by Creekside), the Riglet Park will expose skiers and riders of all ages to a beginner-level introduction to terrain park riding. With about a dozen features, it will allow kids (and adults too!) to learn without completely paralyzing them with fear. “There’s no doubt that we need to continue to elevate the prominence of the terrain parks,” Morgan said. “This is a really cool facet of our sport - think of the Olympics and X-Games. Without giving kids that first step, we can’t expect them to progress to superstar levels. The Riglet Park will give the young guns a chance to start small and then go huge.” Amongst the other parks, over 20 versatile features will be added including multiple setup options and a Red Bull signature feature. “We’re working on a couple of events now, including a banked-slalom with Phatman (@PhatmanShops) and our annual pre-season rail jam,” Morgan said. “We’re working on something now with The Boardroom (@BoardroomEville) for February, and the end of the season will see the return of our Air and Style Quarterpipe event.” “All in all, we’re really stoked on the improvements we made this year,” Morgan concluded. “It’s going to be really cool to see how the kids progress in the Riglet Park. Again, it goes back to that progression of the sport. We’ve got to do our part to make sure kids stay stoked.”

Holiday Valley is no longer a mere ski resort - it’s a destination. Whether you’re with your kiddies or your wedding party, there’s something to be said for the place seemingly in the middle of nowhere. But as it continues to improve itself year-in and year-out, Holiday Valley has stayed true to the virtue it was founded on - customer service. And for that, it was recognized. Congratulations, HV!

SKI Magazine’s annual resort guide (Oct. 2013 issue) bestowed the honor after polling close to 40,000 readers during the 2012-‘13 season. The mag asks participants what they look for in a ski resort and what matters most to the experience they have, then lists resorts and has the readers rank them. In the past ten years, Holiday Valley has ranked in the top10 a whopping eight times. Continually reinvesting in itself, Holiday Valley stays at the top of the game by excelling in customer service, lodging, on- and off-hill amenities, exceptional snowmaking and most importantly - its employees. The strength of a chain is determined by its individual links. When you break down the chain - management, food service, the mountain crew, etc. - you’ll see how strong each link is at Holiday Valley. The 5th overall ranking is so impressive because of one fact: the elevation is under 1,000 feet. Holiday Valley goes toe-to-toe with the East Coast’s big dogs - Killington, Jay Peak and Mt. Tremblant - by making itself better in ways that it can. There’s no way to add elevation to the resort. But what it can do is build beautiful lodges, improve its snowmaking and continue to add amenities for families coming to visit. “It really boils down to the staff,” said Holiday Valley’s Director of Marketing, Jane Eshbaugh. “That’s a big pull for people. It’s pretty exceptional because one person could be having a terrible day and speak about it - which can make or break someone’s perception of us - so it speaks volumes on how excellent of a job our employees do each and every day.” When breaking down the rankings, you start to see why Holiday Valley was ranked 5th overall. Lifts came in at #1, Customer Service and On-Mountain Food both pulled in at #2, Dining and Apres #3, Lodging at #4, while Off-hill activities and Access were in the #5 spot. Weather (which is tough to control) hit #6, and Family Programs came in at #7. All in all, an impressive outing for the premiere ski resort. “We’re always making sure we’re improving,” Eshbaugh said. “The management team makes the decisions, but we listen to our employees for fresh ideas.” With 13 lifts (three of them high-speed quads) and close to 60 trails (many of which are lit for night skiing), it’s no surprise Holiday Valley ranked 1st in that category. And with the beautiful Tamarack Club, the Inn and dozens of condos, ranking 4th in the Lodging category is no surprise either. “One of the most critical aspects of this ranking is our new Main Lodge,” Eshbaugh said, referencing the $10-million, 60,000 square-foot lodge at the resort’s epicenter. “That’s why our on-hill food ranking jumped to 2nd. The presentation, amount of space and number of new food options all added to it. The new lodge features what’s called the Mountainside Grille, a marketplace style eatery with stone hearth pizza oven, carving station and homemade soups and chili. Plus we have John Harvard’s Brew House, located right at the resort inside the Tamarack Club.” It’s obvious that Holiday Valley and the town of Ellicottville feed off of each other; without one, the other wouldn’t be as successful. It’s a testament to local business owners for keeping pace with Holiday Valley’s monstrous growth and providing visitors with a bevy of food, drink and shopping options.

At John Harvard’s, located inside the Tamarack Club at Holiday Valley, you’ll find a lively restaurant and bar serving a wide range of award-winning comfort foods and craft brews. From classic entrees like old-fashioned chicken pot pie, to a twist on traditional favorites including lobster mac & cheese, to their extensive menu of flatbread pizzas, Harvard’s offers a variety of tastes to satisfy ever member of your family or group.
By Megan E. Sorokes If you’re looking for a family-friendly restaurant with a touch of Cheers where “everybody knows your name,” look no further than John Harvard’s Brewery and Ale House, located inside the Tamarack Club at Holiday Valley Resort. “It’s a restaurant that promotes a healthy, happy lifestyle in its food, service and beer,” said Franco Brady, general manager of Holiday Valley’s Food and Beverage Department, which includes John Harvard’s. Just step inside Harvard’s, and you’ll find some of the best comfort food for chilly Western New York nights - not to mention dozens of microbrews and specialty beers on tap. Jane Eshbaugh, Marketing Director of Holiday Valley exclaimed, “They have a fantastic selection of microbrews and specialty brews. It’s a great place to eat, have a beer, and there’s always a good vibe.”
OPEN DAILY FOR LUNCH, DINNER & PRIVATE EVENTS
This year, John Harvard’s will be adding more craft beers from local sources, and also plans to incorporate fresh local ingredients into the menu. A few of their more popular dishes are the lobster mac n’ cheese, fresh - never frozen - burgers, brick oven pizza, and Martini salmon, the #1 choice for Eshbaugh. “The salmon is grilled perfectly,” described Eshbaugh, “… moist and tasty - and it has a martini sauce, complete with olives, served over saffron rice with asparagus on the side. It is delicious and healthy too.” With a full menu of enticing entrees and a panoramic view of the ski slopes (and golf course in the summertime), it’s no wonder that John Harvard’s is a prime location for special events. “We have a private dining room that seats approximately 30-35 people, and we offer Holiday Valley’s catering menu or limited items from John Harvard’s menu,” Brady said, noting that the best way to book an event is to call Holiday Valley’s catering department at 716-699-2010.
HIT THE SLOPES, GRAB A BITE & A BREW
With snowstorms soon to arrive, an influx of winter sports enthusiasts are sure to develop an appetite after a long day on the slopes, and you can bet the staff at Harvard’s will be ready and waiting. “I like to see a full dining room, so our challenge is always keeping it full with fun, excitement and great food and service,” said Brady. “The biggest reward is seeing people leave happy, and making new friends every day. We teach our staff to treat every guest as though he or she is family. We are part of a great community and it is natural for us to want each guest to have an exceptional experience at John Harvards.”
LOCATION! LOCATION!
The Tamarack Club (which houses not only John Harvard’s, but also a full day spa, heated indoor-outdoor pool, outdoor hot tubs, a fitness center, and plenty of lodging - both vacation rentals and fractional ownership with underground and valet parking), is now in its fifth season. “The location of the Tamarack Club is so important,” Eshbaugh said. “Nestled right at the base of the resort, you have direct access to Mardi Gras, Creekside and Cindy’s chairlifts, and so many other attractions right outside your door. The amenities are very convenient. The Tamarack Club has added to our summertime visitors, too, because it’s in the RCI network, an international exchange program for condos. People come to the club that have never been to the area before and discover that they really enjoy it here.” For additional information on the Tamarack Club, or to make reservations, call 800-323-0020 or 716-699-2345, or visit www.holidayvalley.com. Ready. Set ... Point. Shoot. Post.
By Pat Morgan
One of the often-forgotten gems of the area is the Holiday Valley Tubing Company. It doesn’t get much easier than this - rally the troops and head east on Route 242 approximately four miles from the village, and you’ll see the Tubing Company on your right just past The Birdwalk Restaurant. Tubing really is fun for all ages! Here’s where it gets even easier: all you have to do once you arrive, is sit down, hang on and experience the good old fun that is tubing! With 12 lanes and two handle tows, you don’t have to wait long to get back up the hill for run after run. Speaking from experience, you go fast, and you’d be hard pressed to suppress a smile on your face. New this season, Holiday Valley will be adding an ice-skating surface at the Tubing Company (the only one in the local area!) The plan as of now is to have a good sized skating surface for you and your family to enjoy, and Holiday Valley is currently looking to find rental skates as well. Don’t forget the perfect complement to any ice skating action is a cup of hot cocoa outside the adjacent fire pit! No car? Or simply not looking to drive anywhere? Holiday Valley offers a complimentary shuttle service to and from the resort, available on the hour per request during operating hours. Pickup is at the Resort Services Center turn-around or the Inn at Holiday Valley. Generally, the Tubing Company is open through mid-March, so there is no excuse to miss out this season. Rates for the Tubing Company start at just $17, making this attraction affordable family fun. The Tubing Company also runs a special called “Tube for $10,” which runs on Thursdays throughout the season. Unlimited tubing for just $10 … can’t beat that! The park is open Thursdays and Fridays from 4-9pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from noon-9pm. Additional hours are available President’s week and March Break, weather permitting. Still have questions? Give them a shout at 716-699-8823. Not quite sold on tubing? We’ve got a homerun for you then, in the Sky High Mountain Coaster at Holiday Valley. The coaster is located adjacent to the Tannenbaum Lodge right at Holiday Valley, and is quickly becoming one of the favorite activities for all ages while visiting. Need a visual? Imagine a one or two-person rollercoaster car, which weaves its way through the woods of the Tannenbaum area. What makes it exciting is how seemingly low to the ground and close to the trees you are, as you whip along the track. If you’re not necessarily a speed freak, you can control your speed with levers located on the sides of the car. No matter how fast you’re going, each “run” takes approximately six minutes, and it’s safe to say one run wont be enough for you. There are a couple of fine print items when checking out the Mountain Coaster: children must be at least 3 years old and 36 inches tall to ride with an adult, or 8 years and 42 inches tall to ride alone. Riders must be able to perform certain physical tasks to participate. Rates start at just $8 and tickets can be purchased at any ticket window or lodging property at Holiday Valley. You can also save a few bucks by purchasing your coaster ticket at the time you buy your lift ticket. The coaster operates from 2-8pm on Thursdays and Fridays, and 1-8pm Saturday and Sunday, plus holidays. Groups of 15 or more who are not purchasing lift tickets may ride the coaster for $7 each. (Advance reservations required.) So what are you waiting for? Give Holiday Valley a call today at 716-699-2345, or better yet, just come on down, where plenty of fun awaits you and your family!

A Genuine Winter Experience; A Lifestyle for Many Never Been? There’s No Better Time to Discover HoliMont’s True Character ... You’ll Be Glad You Did!
For 50 years, families and snowsports enthusiasts from miles around have converged on HoliMont - North America’s largest private ski area devoted to family skiing adventures. Generations of members have been drawn in by the amazing skiing, only to fall in love with the warm, community atmosphere that makes HoliMont the kind of place you never want to leave. During the week, HoliMont is happy to welcome non-members and groups. Eight lifts service over 50 slopes and trails.
By Brenda Perks Is winter a season you actually look forward to rather than dread? Does the prospect of putting snow tires on your vehicle put a big grin on your face? Is a new set of skis or a snowboard deck your idea of the perfect holiday gift? Do you daydream about the perfect powder day with no lift lines and no crowds? If so, then HoliMont Ski Area might just be the place for you. Membership at HoliMont is an experience that is difficult to put into words because it really is just that - a genuine winter experience. Sure, you can envision tipping your skis on edge and engaging your freshly tuned Rossignol Pursuit 18 Ti’s into pristinely groomed corduroy and ripping down a black diamond slope, but until you actually put yourself in a position where you can feel the bite of the Western New York winter air against your face as you cruise down a slope, your vision of what this experience is like pales in comparison to the real thing. Located just outside of the quaint village of Ellicottville, NY, HoliMont Ski Area is unique in relationship to many of its ski resort brethren. The reason for this is that HoliMont is actually a private club. It has a membership base that, for an assortment of reasons, is very passionate about the club. But this isn’t your father’s country club. People become members at HoliMont because of its family-friendly atmosphere just as much as they do because of the area’s pristinely groomed slopes and snowmaking abilities. With an emphasis on children-focused ski school programs that teach young members proper skiing/snowboarding mechanics, safety, and most importantly - fun, the HoliMont experience is one that is enjoyed by all age groups. Experience HoliMont. It’s more than just a marketing slogan. It’s more like a lifestyle suggestion, a “word to the wise,” if you will. You can check out www.holimont.com or follow the club on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, where you will find plenty of great content and some action packed photos ... but it still won’t give you the true feeling of what it is like to be at the club on a Saturday morning in January after Ellicottville has been blanketed with seven inches of fresh snow and the HoliMont Mountain Crew has been hard at work creating corduroy-covered slopes all night long. On those days you will find out exactly what the edges on your skis are made for or how floating through the glades on a snowboard is as thrilling as any feature in the terrain park. It’s the little intricacies that truly make HoliMont a special place. This club was founded on family
values, hard work and a deep-rooted love of skiing. So while the club has definitely evolved over the years, the one thing that has never changed is that it offers a one-of-akind family atmosphere. There are HoliMont Members who have been involved with the club since its inception (the club celebrated its 50th anniversary last season). They will tell you stories of hiking the hills in the off-season in order to remove any large rocks that might protrude through the snow and damage skis once winter arrived. Or about how the Main Chalet also once doubled as the garage for the first snow groomer purchased by the club. Or maybe you’ll hear about how the chairlifts used to have numbers (i.e. One, Two, Three) for names instead of being called Meadow or Cascade. Through it all though, what you will find is that becoming a Member at HoliMont is about more than involvement in a club; it essentially becomes a home away from home … a vacation you can enjoy every weekend throughout the winter.
OPEN TO NON-MEMBERS
Perhaps membership just isn’t for you though. Not to worry. HoliMont still has you covered. Many years ago the HoliMont Board of Directors made the decision to open HoliMont to non-members on weekdays (the week between Christmas and New Year’s is the only time this is not applicable). This change made it possible for any winter enthusiast to experience a private ski club during off-peak times. It’s not uncommon for people to use vacation days in order to take advantage of HoliMont’s Weekday Experience Pass (10 non-transferrable lift tickets and 5 ski school clinics for rates as low as $210). And since the weekday traffic is considerably less than weekend traffic, it really is as if you have a private ski area all to yourself at times. This is an especially nice feeling when you are at the top of a black diamond run and you look down only to see that there is no one below you. You have the entire slope to yourself to enjoy as you test the true capabilities of your skis. If you have been to HoliMont, then you probably have an idea of what the HoliMont experience is all about because it really is something that you have to take in first-hand. If that’s the case, then HoliMont looks forward to seeing you back this season. But if you have yet to give this quaint ski area a try, put it on your “to do” list. More likely than not, you’ll be glad you did.

Group Skiing is Worth a Vacation Day ... Or Two
Take an Opportunity This Season to Unwind: Plan Your Company Gathering, Ski Club Trip or Family Get-together
The sun is still shining brightly and the days are still (relatively) warm, but before we know it there will be snow falling from the sky. No one knows this better than the people involved in the ski industry. Here at HoliMont, we are gearing up for another exciting season. Even though the snow isn’t here yet, there is no better time than right now to organize your group outing to HoliMont. Group leaders are already lining up to reserve space on the HoliMont chalet calendar for the approaching season. And in case you are still under the impression that HoliMont is just a private ski club where the general public is not allowed to ski; that is not the case. HoliMont is open to non-members every Monday through Friday (excluding Christmas Week Dec. 25-31). Did you ever find out about a secret that you actually wanted to keep? Well that is basically what weekday skiing and snowboarding at HoliMont is like. Imagine carving down corduroy so well groomed that you can actually feel the difference in performance of the equipment under your feet. You paid good money for your gear so you skiing might as well ride in a way that was intended. That is what you’ll get at HoliMont … an experience unlike any other. HoliMont prides itself on the quality and maintenance e kind of its snow and every season those in the know reap the rewards of our commitment to snow. Whether you are organizing a ski day for your company’s team building experience, a ski club, or a large family outing, HoliMont’s group skiing has serious advantages. You can take the opportunity to unwind while continuing to be productive, reconnect with friends and family, or just have a good time cruising the slopes. Group skiing is a rewarding experience filled with ample opportunities to create long-lasting memories. For more information on bringing a group to HoliMont, head over to www.holimont. com or email groupsales@holimont.com. Hoping to see you at HoliMont this season!
WestMont Ridge: A New Era at HoliMont is Underway
$3 Million Infrastructure Project Breaks Ground: Snag Your Future Ski In/Ski Out Real Estate Before it’s Too Late
As HoliMont Ski Area prepares to enter its 51st season on the slopes, there has been no shortage of off-season activity around North America’s largest private ski area. Every off-season there is a series of standard projects (repairing and replacing in-ground snowmaking water and airlines, upgrading chairlift features, etc.) that take place as well as some projects that go above and beyond the normal day-to-day operations.
The largest project on the books during the summer of 2013 is the $3 million infrastructure undertaking at the WestMont Ridge expansion project. This phase of the job calls for the creation of roadways, electric lines, sewer, etc., and is the initial component of what will eventually be an estimated $22 million project. For those of you not familiar with the WestMont Ridge project, on February 23, 2013, HoliMont hosted a very successful auction where it sold 17 of the 31 single family residential lots. Since that time, four more lots have sold, which means only ten lots remain. To purchase a remaining lot, contact HoliMont Realty at 716-699-2826. Lots range in size from .39 to .59 acres. Proposed WestMont Ridge Amenities: • Ski-in/ski-out residential homes and condos with breathtaking mountain views • Park & Pipe terrain with lighted, nighttime hours and challenges for all levels • Expertly groomed slopes with convenient access from all properties • Spacious day lodge with upscale member dining areas and easy access to all facilities and services • “Learn to Ski” area featuring expanded, beginner-friendly terrain and slopes, two magic carpets, and a warm-up room in Day Lodge • High-speed detachable lift at Sunset for easier load/unload and fast access more than 52 slopes and trails • Nordic Center to promote cross-country skiing and snowshoeing • Parking area to accommodate all members and guests The Buildings and Grounds Crew has had a busy summer as they have not only dismantled and revamped both of the main men’s and women’s bathrooms in the main chalet, but are also currently working on building a rustic warming hut on top of the mountain where skiers will be able to stop in to warm themselves by the fire. In terms of lift maintenance, the Lift Crew has been diligently rebuilding and repainting the Meadow chairlift. The structure of the lift remains the same, however, the lift will have an updated look; one that compliments the Exhibition Express high speed detachable quad that was installed last summer. On the hill, the Mountain Crew has been testing, repairing and replacing in-ground water and airlines that make up the lifeblood of the snowmaking system. HoliMont’s diesel generator has also been revamped and converted over so that it can run primarily on gas. There has also been an upgrade to the ignition systems on the two gas generators in HoliMont’s power plant.

Winter 2013: No Hibernating Permitted
Get Off the Couch! Both Ellicottville Ski Resorts Offer Snowsports Opportunities for All Ages and Abilities
Snowfall is inevitable … instead of hibernating through the chilly winter months, step out and learn to enjoy the snow. All it takes is a little time, effort, and of course, adventurous spirit. In our corner of Western New York, it’s the perfect opportunity to bundle up, grab your gear and hit the slopes at Holiday Valley and HoliMont. Both resorts offer top-notch skiing and snowboarding instruction through their respective ski schools. Everyone - young, old, beginner, expert - is encouraged to get out on the hill, especially during the month of January, which is nationally recognized as “Learn-a-Snowsport” month.
By Megan E. Sorokes “Skiing and snowboarding take a particular level of skill and technique,” said Ron Kubicki, Director of Holiday Valley’s Snowsports School. “We strive to give all of our guests a safe and enjoyable adventure on our mountain.” Wendy Frank, Snowsports Director at HoliMont added, “Our goal is to demonstrate to our members and guests that we are here to meet their needs in all areas of professional snowsports instruction, and that it is through their patronage that our snowsports school exists.” With HoliMont being a private club, guests can enjoy smaller group classes over the course of 8-10 weeks. The resort also offers private lessons ranging from one hour to full-day training. “We have an amazing trainee program for teens, which produces great instructors,” Frank said, noting that HoliMont’s staff is comprised of instructors from a variety of professional organizations including Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA), American Association of Snowboard Instructors (AASI), and Canadian Ski Instructors Association (CSIA). “We have professional examiners and trainers who train our instructors each weekend before lessons go out,” she noted. “Our mission is to be the best ski and snowboard school in the eastern United States and Canada, recognized for consistently meeting and exceeding our members’ and guests’ expectations.” Likewise, Holiday Valley hosts a multi-disciplinary school certified by Professional Snowsports Instructors of America and offers high-end coaching in all the competitive aspects of its sports. “Our teachers are exciting and dedicated professionals who excel at people skills,” Kubicki said, noting the school is comprised of about 150 ski instructors, 40 snowboard instructors, approximately 50 race coaches and about 50 adaptive teachers.
ADAPTIVE PROGRAMS ADD EDGE AND OPPORTUNITY The adaptive programs of Holiday Valley and HoliMont are unique to both resorts, providing an opportunity for adults and youth with special needs to learn to ski or snowboard. “Our Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program (LASP) offers lessons to virtually all disabilities - both physical and cognitive,” said Mary Ellen Racich, Director of Holiday Valley’s LASP. The program, which began in 1988, honors Bill Lounsbury, a patrolman and friend who lost a leg to cancer and taught himself to ski on one leg. “He was an inspiration to many,” Racich said. “When Bill lost his battle to cancer, monetary donations came to the Ski Patrol at Holiday Valley as memorials. That money was used to buy special equipment and start an adaptive ski program.” Since its inception, the not-for-profit organization’s program has grown from four instructors and 14 students to 50 volunteer instructors who teach approximately 225 lessons a season. “All instructors are specially trained in adaptive ski teaching techniques,” Racich noted. “Over 50 percent of our instructors are at least level one certified by the PSIA.” The adaptive ski program at Holiday Valley is funded by private donations, service organizations, grants and its annual fundraiser, the Penguin Paddle. A fun-loving event that’s held at Holiday Valley each February, the Paddle boasts a cookout, raffle, auction and of course, races down Yodeler slope - belly first. “People of all ages split into groups and slide down Yodeler in garbage bags they purchase,” Racich said of the Penguin Paddle. “It’s fun and entertaining.” HoliMont’s Phoenix Adaptive Program, which was started in 1996 by ski instructor Chuck Richardson, also continues to grow and impact the lives of those with disabilities, and is anchored by dedicated instructors, volunteers and parents. “The program offers anyone with special needs the opportunity to learn to ski and ride within a family environment,” Frank said. “We provide much positive encouragement, and it’s truly
rewarding to see our students achieve success.” Each year, the Phoenix Adaptive Program hosts a “Rise to the Challenge” Race and Awareness Day in which participants are able to show off what they’ve learned throughout the year. Constance Searby, who’s son Wil, participates in the program said, “It’s a great way for the Phoenix kids to get out and show the club what their instructors and volunteers have taught them. I also think it raises awareness and integrates the program into the mainstream of the club. Personally, I appreciate people seeing people with disabilities in a different light. Looking at what they can do instead of what they cannot.” Both the LASP and Phoenix Adaptive Program focus on individual instruction and emphasize strengths and abilities rather than disabilities. Searby said she is amazed at the progress Wil makes each year he attends. “His legs are stronger, his balance and core strength are improved, and he can ski,” she said, noting that the brilliance of the Phoenix Program rests in its stability and simplicity. “The consistency is one of Phoenix’s best attributes. Chuck and the staff have done an incredible job of keeping the program nimble, and it’s amazing that they invest the time they do into helping our kids. They make such a difference in all our lives, and we appreciate Chuck and his gang more than anything.” The adaptive programs at HoliMont and Holiday Valley continue to grow and change. The two resorts, along with Buffalo Ski Club, share ideas and training with each other, all in the name of helping to make dreams a reality. “We strive to advance our certifications with a goal to provide total family skiing,” said Frank, “and for our families who have members with special needs, the adaptive program makes this happen.” For more information about the Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program, visit skilasp.wix.com/ lounsburyadaptive or email laspski@hotmail.com. Details about the Phoenix Adaptive Program can be found at www.holimont.com/adaptive.
JANUARY IS NATIONAL “LEARN-A-SNOWSPORT” MONTH Just remember, when that snow starts to fall, HoliMont and Holiday Valley encourage everyone - young, old, beginner and expert - to hit the slopes, especially in January, which is dedicated as National Learn-a-Snowsport Month. “This is a nationwide initiative and supported by all aspects of our industry,” noted Kubicki. During the month, HoliMont offers a free lesson for guests who bring a friend to the resort. At Holiday Valley, visitors are offered a 20 percent discount on learner packages, which includes lift, lesson and rentals. “It’s not expensive,” Kubicki said, noting the cost for a Learn-to-Ski package in January will be less than $58. He added that the staff is ready to assist each guest with gearing up for the experience. “Our staff helps ‘first-timers’ with every aspect - from signing up to going through rentals and getting out on the snow. We will spend however long it takes to give our guests a successful first time experience.” Both Kubicki and Frank agree that skiing and snowboarding remain very popular sports as far as numbers are concerned. They encourage everyone to step out onto the snow, try something new and enjoy the winter months. “Learning a new snowsport is challenging, exhilarating and exciting,” Frank said. “It gets us outdoors during the long winter months, and makes the winters fly by.” Kubicki added, “It’s not hard to dress for the cold, and winters are a guarantee in Western New York. Why not look forward to it?” Details about HoliMont’s programs and ski schools can be found at www.holimont.com. For more about Holiday Valley’s ski school and programs, visit www.holidayvalley.com.

Shopping and Dining in Abundance
Ellicottville’s Downtown Boasts a Business District Full of Unique Stores and Tasty Restaurants By Pat Morgan
Ok, so you’ve made the trek here from all parts near and far - the GTA, Buffalo area, Ohio and Pennsylvania. So now that you’ve settled in one of our many hotels, condos or bed & breakfasts, one question remains: what the heck are we going to do now?! Rest assured, there is something for everyone in this awesome little village, so let’s dip our toes in the water and find you a ‘to-do list’ during your stay. First thing’s first … we need to cover the basics. Ellicottville is small enough to tackle the entire deal on foot, so once you get that vehicle parked, it’s time to do some shopping. It goes without saying Ellicottville is a ski community, so naturally there are multiple ski and snowboard specialty shops ready to outfit you with the latest and greatest. However, there are many other very unique offerings here that will absolutely catch your eye.
SHOPPING, SHOPPING, SHOPPING!
A Touch of Ellicottville: Everything “Ellicottville” you could want
Bike & Bean: “Clean Fuel + Exercise = Happy People”
Feel good, look good: Nature’s Remedy and neighboring shop, Gado Gado
Need one of those “EVL” stickers you’ve seen everywhere? Take a stop into A Touch of Ellicottville - they’ve got everything Ellicottville you could want - from those aforementioned decals, to apparel and wall hangings. The charm of the town comes to life in this store, so why not bring a piece of it back with you? Right next door on Washington (Main) Street, you’ll find the newly re-named Bike & Bean (formerly Ellicottville Bike Shop), where you’re likely to see Dennis inside tuning up mountain bikes and road cycles, brought to them because they’re the best of the best. Hungry while you’re waiting on that tune-up? Let Rachel treat those taste buds with one of their delicious, organic burritos, complete with all the fixings. With a great array of components, clothing, bikes, as well as knowledge of the local trails and roadways, and now one of the best taste treats in town, this truly is one stop shopping at its finest. Not your cup of tea yet? Don’t worry, there’s more … Looking for something you didn’t even know you were looking for? Ellicottville is perfect for this. Stores like The Holiday Shoppe, Tangled Twigs, Earth Arts, Kazoo II and Alexandra all have helped me come up with the ‘forgotten anniversary/birthday’ problem many of us young (and old) males experience frequently. Cards, candles, frames, crafts, fixtures, books and art are just some of the things you’ll be able to browse through to find something that is just right for the occasion. Although on paper you may be thinking you can get this stuff anywhere, the fact of the matter is the items in these stores are carefully selected to be rich in character, feel and originality which you won’t find in just any old “this & that” store. A quick skip across the street will showcase even more of the retailers who make up the melting pot of Ellicottville. A step into Daff Dry Goods will take you into a different feel altogether, presenting you with what I would call “cowgirl/cowboy chic,” with clothing, footwear and jewelry all with that southwestern outdoors feel. If this isn’t the look you’re going for, Red Door and Après are just a few doors down, with ski (and après ski) fashions for young and old alike. Had enough of clothing? We haven’t even scratched the surface yet. Many who visit town marvel at some of the unique home décor notorious for our area, like the antler chandeliers or reclaimed barnboard furniture. Lucky for you, the search for “where the heck did they get that?” is over. Pop your head into Aardvark and check out their offerings, and chat with their team who has searched far and wide to put these great pieces together. After your arms are tired from carrying all of those boxes, bags and decorative pieces you’ve gathered on your journey, it’s time to focus on you and your wellness. A hidden gem here in Ellicottville is Nature’s Remedy, which provides natural and organic supplements, whole foods, as well as teas, oils, eco-friendly cleaning products, and books to educate yourself on putting it all into motion. A quick walk through the adjoining hallway, and you’ll quickly find yourself in Gado Gado, immersed in some of the most unique clothing and accessories one can find here in Ellicottville. One could say the selection is “worldly,” to put it simply. Finally, what better mid-day treat than a quick (or long) massage or body treatment from the crew over at Ellicottville Oasis. This popular (and extremely relaxing) spa has the ability to ease your mind and that aching neck and back.
STOMACH GROWLING?
Just when you thought you didn’t have enough tough decisions to make on what to buy, now comes the tough part about where to eat in Ellicottville. There is no shortage of choices here in the village, so pull up a chair (or a stool if you’re on that liquid diet) and let’s figure out what’s next … During that quick jaunt around town, you undoubtedly saw the sights and perhaps experienced the smells of our bar and restaurant community. The challenge is picking exactly what it is you’re looking for, so why be choosy … check them all out. Many people who come to Ellicottville make it a mandatory line item to visit EBC (Ellicottville Brewing Company) for that perfect pint. With approximately a dozen craft brewed beers on tap, there’s certainly something you’ll enjoy, or to wash down one of their enormous burgers with. You may have noticed something looks a little different about EBC since your last visit, and that’s because there is A LOT different about their new facility. Increased seating capacity, incredible finishing touches and details greet those who enter, with an all-new menu and brewing facility for you to feast your eyes on during your visit. Book a guided tour of their new and improved facility by logging onto www.ellicottvillebrewing.com.

Downtown Ellicottville is a destination in itself. Park the car and put on those walking shoes ... there’s plenty of door-to-door shopping opportunities in such a variety of categories. You’re guaranteed to find something to your liking. Clockwise from top left: 1) Undoubtedly the most extreme change to Ellicottville’s downtown business district is the expansion of the Ellicottville Brewing Company on Monroe Street. 2) One of the local favorites in town, Katy’s Cafe defines “lunch specials” with delicious homemade soups and sandwiches, along with a full menu of specialty coffee drinks and desserts. 3) If you’re looking to indulge a bit more, head to The Silver Fox Steakhouse for an unforgettable martini ... we recommend dining there as well, for the Fox spotlights quality cuts of meat from another local hit, Dom’s Butcher Block. 4) Located directly in front of The Fox, Dom’s offers meats, fish, breads, and a full line of D’Avolio oils. 5) The newest shop in town, EVL Cheese Company, opened its doors at the end of Sept. and is already a big hit with both locals and visitors. 6) Head next door to EVL Ink Tattoo & Apparel to meet owner Vinny Bielli and his talented crew of tattoo artists. Not only do they lay down some sweet ink, they also sell their own branded apparel, as well as the Sullen line and many accessories - stop in and browse! 7) And for all you ladies out there (and animal lovers too!), Nouriche brings eco-friendly fashion to the forefront with their careful selections of casual wear, sleepwear, candles, jewelry and more.
Looking for something a little more “grab and go” or a bit on the lighter side? Hoagies is just up the street, and as Ellicottville’s #1 pizzeria, what would your stop be without scoring a slice or a sandwich. Another “can’t miss” stop in Ellicottville is local favorite, Katy’s Café, which serves up one of the best breakfast burritos in town, and some of the best daily lunch specials as well. Their homemade soups and chili are now available by the quart, making it convenient for those looking to enjoy some downtime with good flavor back at their condo or hotel. There are also countless places in Ellicottville to pull up a stool and watch the game (GO BILLS!) while enjoying a little something to eat. The Barn, Balloons, Gin Mill, and John Harvard’s Brew House all have a variety of man-cave certified televisions and the appropriate satellite packages to make sure you don’t miss your team’s game. All feature a variety of good old fashioned American food, so you won’t have to worry about starving should that game go into overtime. Looking for something a bit more refined? May I strongly suggest The Silver Fox Steakhouse or Dina’s - both feature menu items that touch on a more worldly feel, and some extensive wine lists for that perfect pairing. The Silver Fox spotlights cuts of meat from another one of the best kept secrets in town, Dom’s Butcher Block, located in the Washington Square complex. Speaking of Dom’s, they have an all-new smoker in-house now, thus ensuring that “they only smoke the best” … meats, that is. Whether you’re looking for the freshest cuts of meat, oils, cheeses, fish or bread, Dom’s has your entire meal covered!
ELLICOTTVILLE’S NIGHTLIFE
Often called the drinking town with a skiing problem, Ellicottville is also notorious for its nightlife, actually earning recognition in several ski and snowboard magazines as one of the top ten towns of its kind in North America, rivaling towns like Whistler and Breckenridge. From patio parties at Madigan’s, to the dance floor mayhem of Balloons, or the acoustic rock ‘n roll at the Gin Mill, there is ALWAYS something going on. If you’re looking to call it an early night and take the party back to your chalet or hotel room, head to the Village Wine Rack, now located adjacent to Kwik Fill (across from Tops) for a bottle of vino and all the other liquid salvation needs you may be experiencing. If you’re on foot in the immediate village area, may we also suggest stopping in to E-Ville Spirits on Monroe Street, or consider popping next door and find out what’s new and exciting at the Winery of Ellicottville, who have quickly built a great reputation amongst regional vintners in the region!
WHAT’S NEW?
Just as the seasons change here in Ellicottville, so does the retail and restaurant landscape. If you haven’t visited since last fall, we’ve seen a couple of shops change locations, a few businesses expand upward and outward, and an entirely new plaza spring up where there was previously nothing. Let’s see what you’ve missed: Speaking of that new plaza … here is where we find two of the newest businesses in Ellicottville, the first of which is the all new EVL Cheese Company, which conveniently is just a couple doors down from the Village Wine Rack (brilliant!) With its origins dating back to the 1800’s, the root of this newcomer is the Cuba Cheese Shoppe, which has built quite a reputation for some of the highest quality cheeses around. With distribution of their 300+ products now finding shelf space in 140 storefronts around the region, it was only a matter of time before Ellicottville became a final destination for the brand. EVL Cheese Company just recently opened its doors (at the end of Sept.), so be sure to stop in and welcome them to the neighborhood. If you haven’t already exhausted your shopping urge, we need to also mention one of the newest boutiques in town, Nouriche, located just a few doors down from the Gin Mill. Just when you think there couldn’t possibly be a new angle of clothing and offerings here in the village, newcomers Jessica and Rachel will wow you with their carefully selected array of mostly women’s attire, accessories, toys, small home furnishings, and other unique items. Even if you’re simply “kicking the tires” browsing what they have, one can easily appreciate the finishing touches that decorate the interior of this storefront. Last but not least, is perhaps the newest and most surprising addition to the Ellicottville area - the all new EVL Ink Tattoo & Apparel tattoo studio, owned and operated by Vinny Bielli. Located in the same plaza as the Village Wine Rack and EVL Cheese Company, the amount of traffic in and out of Bielli’s studio has been beyond impressive. Perhaps it’s the allure of the clothing and accessories he has for sale, or perhaps it’s the fact that he is an incredibly talented tattoo artist … one thing is for certain, it’s worth popping by to check out, introduce yourself, or better yet: schedule an appointment! So there you have it folks … way too many places to go and things to do, in not nearly enough time. I guess that means you’ll just have to come back again, won’t you? Find plenty of literature and a friendly staff to answer any questions you may have about Ellicottville, by visiting the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce office, 9 W. Washington (next to the gazebo). You can also click over to their site at www.ellicottvilleny.com. Thanks for reading, and happy exploring!

Your specialties ... ready, set, go: We’re masters of setting you up with the gear that’s perfect for you. Snowboarding isn’t life or death! Let’s have some fun with it. We want you to come in, hang with our two beagles, crack some jokes and just get stoked on the experience. That’s what we’re trying to sell - the experience. We’re also a full-service shop, so get your stuff tuned up before the season! Don’t miss out on our Oakley Goggle Bar. We’re also the only off-hill location that sells Holiday Valley lift tickets, and we’ve got a full lineup of high-performance ski and snowboard rentals.
Homewood is one of the newer manufacturing brands in the snowboard industry ... tell us a little bit about the company. Homewood is a grassroots, DIY, American-made brand with a solid foundation in manufacturing, based in a skilled-labor community of NW PA. Unlike most snowboard industry competitors, we own our factory, employ hard-working snowboarders who care deeply about the product, sleep at the shop, and we have a pretty rad cat.
Interview with: Samantha Timkey VP of high 5’s
A lot of people will be excited to hear that you’re now carrying Volcom in the store. Can you give us a glimpse into your Volcom selection? We are so stoked on bringing Volcom back into our store. It’s such a killer company with tons of brand power, and the line this year is very good. The quality of the product is unparalleled. The style spans the spectrum from edgy to conservative - it covers our entire customer base. What hardgood products are you super stoked on selling this season? We’ve really narrowed our brands down to the point where anything you buy is going to get you stoked on the hill. Obviously, Nike is just crushing the game right now. They’ve added Boa technology to a couple of their boots. Union Bindings recently brought Travis Rice onto its team, so he’s got a signature binding called The Factory. It’s sick. Lib and GNU continue to elevate their games, and we’ve brought in new models such as the Impossible, Hot Knife, Box Scratcher and Rider’s Choice for guys and the T-Bird and Ladies’ Choice for our ladies. Same question, softgoods. We all know how good of a product Under Armour makes, and it’s no different for its outerwear, which we brought in new for this season. In addition to having competitively priced 3-in-1’s, its new technology Infrared (a pattern on the interior shows where the pant/jacket retains your body’s heat) is utilized on every piece. Salomon helmets and goggles offer tons of good tech, from the lenses with Carl Zeiss tech to helmets with their unique air bladder micro-fit system (WE GONNA PUMP YOU UP!) Also, GoPro Cameras are at the top of the game right now. We’ve got cameras, SD cards and all the accessories. Tell us about The PowderRoom. The PowderRoom is designed for our female winter sport enthusiasts who want to look really, really ridiculously good while killing it on-hill. It’s not for getting made up - it’s for making sure you’ve got your gear dialed in so you can give the boys a run for their money. For those that aren’t familiar, give us a quick low-down on your Oakley Goggle Bar. The Goggle Bar! It’s so cool. You can come in and build your own unique Oakley goggle - we’ve got all models, from the AirBrake to the Splice. Pick out a lens, outriggers, strap and frame and sit back as we put it together. The AirBrake allows you to switch lenses ridiculously easily (seriously - you can do it on the chairlift) and you can get colorful with the options. We’ve seen red, white and blue (Go Bills/America), black and yellow (for our Pennsylvania family) and total randoms. It’s awesome. Music station(s) of choice during business hours? Mainly, we’re down with Johnny Cash Pandora. Who doesn’t love the man in black? What’s the one big on-hill event you’re looking forward to this season? Well, we’re trying to figure some stuff out and we don’t want to give it away ... that being said, if it works out, that will be the event we’re looking forward to. (Stay tuned!)
Interview with: Ryan Williamson Co-owner
What changes are being made with this year’s line? We have 3 new models that feature basalt in place of fiberglass: The Shining Cat, Fudd Pucker, and Extra Chi’s. These boards are lighter, stronger, and more flexible than a typical snowboard with fiberglass. Depending on the model, they’re loaded up with carbon fiber in certain sweet spots to provide the extra pop for ollying while staying soft in the middle for bigger presses and a more playful feel. Basalt is also much greener than fiberglass ... man. You have some really cool artwork covering your boards this season ... who are the artists? We worked with three artists for this year’s line. All buddies of ours. Drew Thorla from Pittsburgh did The Shining Cat, Sunday’s Best, Foundation, Extra Chi’s, and Hidden Valley. Brian Gonnella from Pittsburgh did the S.O.S. and Scapegoat. Tom Young from New Zealand did the Fudd Pucker. We’re pretty pumped on how all of the boards look this year. Do you guys get to shred often? Or are you usually stuck slaving away in the factory? You know, everywhere I go I always hear the same thing from people. “Ah man, you make snowboards? That must be so cool. You just get to ride all the time and get paid for it.” The reality is we spend most of our time sweating out our hangovers in the factory and scraping together our money to buy a Hot-n-Ready. I can’t complain though. It’s good times working with your friends and we do make sure to take days off to ride as much as we can. How much traveling does the Homewood Team do in the winter to promote its brand? Any interesting stories to share? This is usually the fun part that gets us out of the factory and on the road. We’ve done demo tours the last couple years. We’ll grab some of our riders, bring a bunch of demo boards and a tent, pack into a van and head out to different resorts. We’ll also do different trade shows and events that are going on. My mom will most likely be reading this so I probably shouldn’t tell many stories of our adventures ... Music station(s) of choice in the factory? We try to mix it up a bunch so things don’t get stale around here. Everything from punk rock to bluegrass to hip hop to talk radio. And still never enough Garth. The staff’s favorite place to grab lunch when in Ellicottville? EBC is always a nice treat for ourselves. And Dina’s if Anne is working, of course. I know that there are a lot more out there that we haven’t been to though. Favorite EVL watering hole? Parking lots and chairlifts. That dude behind the bar at Madigan’s was super nice to us. And Balloons. I’m pretty sure we’ve had some good times there as well. So what do you guys do in the off-season when the snow melts? Skateboard, play music, ride bikes, kayak, hike, build fires, wakeboard, climb rocks, mow the grass, camp out, wear cut off shirts, get sun burnt, smell more like Texas Hot sauce than usual, and build boards for the upcoming season.

Clothing: Mountain Hard Wear, The North Face, Armada, Salomon, Fly Low, Isis. Lifestyle: Kühl, Icebreaker. Accessories: Smith, Giro, Hestra gloves, Darn Tough socks
What’s hot this season at The Red Door? Everything! The Red Door has long been the largest distributer of The North Face in the E’ville area and this year is no exception. Starting with our ladies “Breast Cancer Awearness” collection, featuring everything from Apex Bionic jackets, down vests and “Osito” jackets. This is such a great program because we purchase these items and The North Face then issues $5.00 from each item to various breast cancer research organizations to help further the fight against this disease that knows no boundries. Our Men’s, Ladies and Kids collection of Triclimate systems all come with the zip-in fleece, Osito or quilted jackets that make it easy to adjust to all types of weather changes. For winter hiking or snowshoeing, we have a selection of “softy” softshells with “Osito” linings for the gals and the Krestwood pullovers and Momentum zip liners for the guys. Also, lots of “Half Dome” hoodies for everyone! We are not forgetting all the “little ones” that also get out there and play during the winter with the Snuggley Bunny bunting, jacket and bib sets from Columbia, the cool bright colors from Spyder and funky prints from Obermeyer that feature the valuable “Grow Cuff” because it seems that the kids get bigger every year!
Let’s get right down to it. Hardgood products you’re carrying this year? I would have to say the best brand this year is going to be Salomon, hands down. They have figured out how to make a fully heat moldable ski boot. We simply select which boot will fit the customer the best and begin the molding process by putting just the shell of the boot in a specifically designed oven to heat the actual plastic. After about 12-15 minutes, we take the shell out of the oven and place the liner back inside and have the customer put the boot back on their feet. While the boot is cooling, the customer’s feet will make all the adjustments that are needed. This feature will be most popular with people that have problematic width issues. Salomon also has a very strong ski and binding line-up as well this year, offering skis for the ex-racer guy/gal all the way up to the powder seeker! The only way to bring this whole marriage together is with a Salomon binding. Choosing from their exclusive WTR (walk to ride) series will be the way to go when mounting up a pair of wider all mountain to powder skis. It offers the skier the choice of wearing a conventional soled ski boot or having the option to have a BC (back country) soled boot. Salomon also has the rights to their new Guardian AT (alpine touring) binding - geared for the adventurous skier. The Guardian enables a skier to unlock the heel piece of the binding to travel uphill with the help of a set of skins. Once you’ve reached you ascent, take off the skins and click the heel back into “ski” mode to rip down the run. How about Softgoods? We are always striving to seek out the leaders in the ski/outdoor apparel world, so its always exciting to get people stoked on the new colors and fabrics each year. The one brand we’ve been selling since almost day one isn’t even a ski brand! Kühl clothing out of Salt Lake City has a very unique take on their 4-season lifestyle brand. They’ve come up with a very unique look to the sales floor for people who want fashion and functionality. Whether you’re hiking through the mountains or cruising into the local bistro, Kühl has something to offer. They have a full summer line as well, so we carry it all year round. (In the summertime we also have a solid line-up of functional footwear and clothing, and we carry BIC Stand Up Paddle Boards too!) Some of your other “must-mention” items in-store: We’ve always had the knack to stumble upon very different items. This past winter while Sean and I were attending our awards party for Skiing Business, we met a young fella named Alex, co-owner of a new electronics company called Jammypack. What is a Jammypack you ask? Well, if you’ve ever been caught wearing a fanny pack and have been made fun of, this is your chance to get back at those nay says with a hopped-up version of the classic fanny pack. The jammypack has two built-in speakers with a plug-in battery pack. Simply strap the pack around your waist, plug in your phone or iPod and blast off! ... music streaming loudly! We’ve also picked up a little bit more of a technical electrical line, Outdoor Technology. OT has one simple plan: get rid of wires! They offer a full line of wireless/bluetooth headphones and outdoor speakers. The most popular thus far has been their portable outdoor/weatherproof speaker called the Turtle Shell. It has a very unique “turtle shell” style, comes in a bunch of different colors, and can even be mounted to your bike with the “turtle claw” bike mount! And of course the one item that people are always intrigued by is the Gibbon slackline. If you haven’t seen or tried slacklining, you’re missing out! Are you planning any special events for this season? We have our annual Matchstick Productions movie premiere at the Ellicottville Depot each fall. This year MSP will be honoring one of the best and influential skiers of all time, Shane McKonkey. Shane passed away two years ago in a tragic skiing accident. Saturday, Nov. 23 at 8pm. This is a free show and no doubt will be a heck of a time! We’ve got a lot of ideas brewing, so be sure to check out our FB page for more info as the date gets closer!
Interview with: Liz Boberg Manager
What influences you when choosing the shop’s inventory? Everything! TV, magazines, buying shows, people, etc. We have expanded our purchasing of Columbia Sportswear because of its rise in technology and affordability. During the summer we talked about Omni Wick, Shade and Freeze, and now we are excited about Omni Heat, Omni Shield and Omni Tech! Look for names like Whirly Bird, Vertical Convert and Veloca Point for ladies. The guys will go for the Back To Hells Mountain systems jacket with outershell Omni Tech, waterproof and breathable, flap protection pockets and waterproof zips . The zip-in is a cool (but warm) flannel plaid shirt with the Omni Heat lining … very nice! Some of your other “must-mention” items in-store: The “must see” is our boot collection by Sorel. Tall, sleek and suede, the ladies’ Wicked Workboot, along with the Conquest Carly with its leather straps and buckles will turn a few heads. The infamous Joan of Arctic in Black, Shale, and Tobacco will complete any winter outing. And of course the Cate the Great in a cool twill grey will keep you very toasty. New in the line is our Tivoli - a shorter, sassy, nylon upper in Nautical Blue and Irridescent Pink. Also the Winter Fancy leather upper with leather straps and buckles. It Looks Great! For the guys, the powerfull Glacier boot will withstand freezing temps for long periods (hey, snowmakers, come and see these!), along with the Caribou and the 1964 Pack, which all have that signature Sorel footbed for complete protection! We also stock lots of fun street wear faux furs from Montanaco, great “Happy Hour Duds” and lots of accessories, hats, scarves, velvet gloves, earmuffs, shawls, ponchos and vests. Not only do you offer great outerwear and casual wear for the entire family, but there’s also a bit of local art available for sale as well. Want to give a shout out? We have, for many years, carried “ Giclee” prints by John Mets, who captures the beautiful look of our Ellicottville area. We also feature handcrafted jewerly by Nancy Guercio, Sylvia Cestnic and Christina Whitman. The Red Door has another location ... are the two stores similar? Differences? Located on Transit Road in Williamsville, NY, at the Transit Town Plaza, The Red Door Ski and Board Shop not only carries all the same clothing lines but also a vast supply of top-of-the-line ski and board equipment. They also offer the ultimate in service and upkeep for your equipment plus seasonal rentals for those growing members of the family!

Interview with: Kim Reading Owner
What are some of the hardgood products you’re excited about this year? It’s hard to go wrong with either the Rossignol Experience 88 or the Blizzard Bonafide, which took top honors again this year for their versatility in all snow conditions. The Head Rev 85 Pro is a new addition to our wall and is noted for their “hard-snow integrity,” making it an ideal East Coast ski. Kastle skis have also been added to our inventory to keep things fresh and interesting. We can’t overlook the women’s specific category. Three skis worth mentioning are the Blizzard Black Pearl, the Rossignol Temptation 88 (my personal favorite) and the Nordica Hells Bells. In snowboards, Burton has added “the chanel with EST” throughout their whole line. EST functions by removing material under the foot to drastically reduce weight of the binding and increase flex under the foot. They have also adapted their reflex technology to be used in all of their bindings. Reflex allows the EST concept to be used with other brands. We are also psyched about K2’s boots with their external conda lacing system. With Harshmellow built into their products to reduce vibration and create a smoother ride, the K2 products look great this year. And with the addition of Ride Snowboards’ Anthem boot - the second most sold boot in the industry - our snowboard department is sure to have something you need. Same question, softgoods. Our junior business is growing every year, and this year is no exception! We shifted the store layout this season to specifically accommodate our junior offering. We have the biggest selection ever of outerwear, mid layers, first layers, hoodies, beanies, belts, socks, and backpacks from Spyder, Burton, Rossignol, DC, Marmot and Obermeyer. The colors, patterns, and detailed style are on trend and packed with the same amount of style, features and tech as mom and dad’s set. As a mom, I know the importance of keeping the little ones warm and dry in every condition … and I feel like we have all the bases covered! Some of your other “must-mention” items in-store: We love all the high character accessories that go along with skiing and snowboarding … the sparkle and shine of the sport. Gloves with touchscreen capable fingers, flashy goggles with interchangeable lenses, lightweight, low profile helmets, hand knit beanies, techy backpacks … it’s all so enticing. We’re big fans of “mid layers” … a versatile layer that fits under a jacket on colder days but stands alone on warmers days. A must mention mid layer is the Marmot Variant Jacket which employs a flattering cut, the right amount of insulation throughout the body and power stretch panels to keep you venting comfortably. Do you offer rentals? We sure do! We rent skis and snowboards by the day or multiple days for adults and juniors. Since buying skis is a big investment, we have a fleet of demo skis so you can “try before you buy.” If you love the ski you demo, we apply the demo fee to the purchase price of the ski. If you want to change things up, you’re welcome to try different skis that same day to find the right ski to suit your needs. In additional to daily rentals and demos, we offer a seasonal lease program for junior skiers. Whether your kids are just starting to ski or board or you don’t want to invest in new gear because they are growing like weeds, our lease program helps you get ski or snowboard gear at affordable prices and we offer both new and pre-owned options. Tell us about the Speed Factory. The Speed Factory is our state-of-the-art tuning and rental center. Last season we invested in the most innovative ski tuning equipment on the market by Montana of Switzerland. These machines do everything from a basic sharpen and wax to high end performance race tuning. The Speed Factory also hosts its own entrance off the side of our building (on Washington Street) for late night pick-up and drop-off of equipment and rentals.

We carry our own branded (JSP) clothing, skateboards and snowboards, Volcom, Capita, Arbor, Union, Coal, Spacecraft, Dragon, Sector Nine, Landyachts, Dakine, Vans, Lakai, Circa, Supra and much more!
What’s hot this season at Phatman? The Capita Thunderstick paired up with a pair of special edition Union Thunderstick bindings are on fire, and package price is easy on the wallet. We’re also pumped on the limited edition ThirtyTwo Lashed Crab Grab collaboration boots as well as the newly popular Nike boots, which have hit runways in the fanciest of cities.
For those not familiar with the name, can you give us a little background? We are a skateboard company based in Jamestown, NY. We all live to skate and snowboard. We try to source as many of our own products to sell. Promoting our brand by selling exactly what we feel is best for our region just makes the most sense to us. Customers seem to really enjoy knowing that their skateboards and other items are made locally. Anything with our logo has been requested most often, so we figured focusing firstly on our brand is the most important.
Interview with: Bob Knab Owner
What are some of the hardgood products that you’re super stoked on carrying this year? Our associates and team riders rode and cherry picked the season’s best products for the first timers to the seasoned vets … we’re looking out for everybody year after year. With the loss of Forum, we have built up our line of Capita snowboards and Union Bindings. After riding out in Oregon at the research and development “ThirtyTwo Boot Camp,” I am a firm believer of the comfort and dependability of the ThirtyTwo boot line we chose. Same question, softgoods. This season’s rad line-up of ThirtyTwo, Volcom and Burton technical outerwear worn by pros like Scott Stevens, JP Walker and our very own Frank Knab. We have pumped up our selection of Volcom in support of my son, Frank, who is currently on the Volcom snowboard team and lives and rides out west at Mammoth Mt. CA. Some of your other “must-mention” items in-store: We separate ourselves from mall shops; we carry core brands that support the raddest skate and snow teams on the planet. We’re stoked on Jus Liv (JSLV) an upcoming lifestyle collective brand, supporting the skate, snow and graffiti culture along with our tried and true apparel brands like LRG, Emerica and Altimont Vans and Volcom. Our pro skate shoe selection is the largest in WNY with timeless brands like Vans, Emerica, Lakai, and Nike SB. Not only do you operate your shop, but you’re also a photographer and you shoot many events at Holiday Valley (which we print regularly in this publication) ... It’s very cool to have my photos published in the paper and used in promotional materials throughout Holiday Valley. I’ve been skateboarding and snowboarding since I was a teenager and have always enjoyed photography and graphic design. Finding a niche in the community, I enjoy capturing and freezing the action and expressions of skiers and snowboarders at Holliday Valley and other Ellicottville events. Check out my photography at rkgraphics.smugmug.com.
Interview with: Pete Scheira Owner
What are some of the hardgood products that you’re super stoked on carrying this year? I’m really excited about our new JSP snowboards. We have two different models this season, one with hybrid camber and the other with traditional camber. Homewood Snowboards is manufacturing the boards for us; they’re located in Bradford, PA which is only about 30 minutes away from us. Some of your other “must-mention” items in-store: Our JSP shop decks are the best selling item in the store. We have a few different shapes and designs. We also have longboards which have been a great seller for awhile now. Music station(s) of choice during business hours: Right now we are rocking the new Black Sabbath. It’s been 35 years since Ozzy, Tommy, and Geezer have recorded together. I would say this new album, Black Sabbath 13, is right on par with the older stuff. You’re probably one of the few - if not the only shop - in Western New York that also houses an indoor skate park, aka The Jungle. Is it open to the public during the winter months? Do you offer memberships? Yes, there aren’t too many of us (shop & park combo) around these days, and yes, it is open during the winter. Winter months are the busiest for the park since Jamestown gets so much snow. We have a decent monthly membership, and our out-of-town traffic is consistent and very beneficial. Our rates are really low, so it is pretty much affordable for anyone to come here.
Are there any unique events or activities Phatman plans to host or take part in this season that the public should keep their ears open for? We are hosting our first annual ”Crazy Eight Classic” at Kissing Bridge on March 1, 2014 - an unforgettable event with banks and berms mixed with speed, airs, gaps, gates ... all proceeds will go to the “Alix Rice Peacepark Foundation” to build a skatepark in Alix’s memory. We’re hoping to host a similar event at Holiday Valley … we’ll get back to you about that one.
Are there any unique events or activities you plan to host or take part in this season that local skiers/riders should keep their ears open for? Of course! We throw wicked contests and parties in the park. Our next comp, King Of The Ramp, is slated for Oct. 19, 2013. King is probably our most prestigious event of the year. We get a ton of out-of-towners and locals all battling for the crown and the cash. Another one to look out for is the Chili Bowl Bash, which will be held Dec. 28, 2013. We have a skate comp, and a chili cook-off. I would say the Chili Bowl is the most fun out of all the events, for me at least.
The staff’s favorite place to grab lunch when in Ellicottville? Hoagies!
The staff’s favorite place to grab lunch when in Ellicottville: The Depot for sure!
Favorite EVL watering hole? Madigan’s or EBC
Favorite EVL watering hole: The Depot!
What’s the flip side to Phatman (in summertime)? Heelflips and shove its haha! Skateboarding, some sunshine and a few cold ones after work. Our shop is Buffalo’s biggest skate shop; we carry the largest selection of skateboards, longboards, hardgoods, shoes and apparel.
What’s the flip side to JSP (in summertime)? Full time skateboarding! Jamestown has a great skate scene. Really awesome street, there’s an outdoor park, and pretty crazy hill bombing. The city has really embraced skateboarding since the old days, so everyone is pretty supportive of what we are doing down here.

By Kristina C. Barlow, N.D., C.S.T. Nature’s Remedy, Ellicottville According to Gretchen Mendell of Nature’s Remedy in Ellicottville, “Last year was the worst cold and flu season that I have experienced in my store over the past 18 years. Lower respiratory or lung infections, secondary to upper respiratory infections, seemed to be a combination of viruses and strong, resistant bacteria working together to create hard hitting, long lasting and often recurring sinus and lung infections, with the latter being the worst.” I can attest to this statement as I’ve worked at Nature’s Remedy since October of 2012, and witnessed my clients’ frustrations with intense respiratory symptoms, antibiotics commonly not working, concomitant infections (especially yeast infections) from misuse and overuse of antibiotics, OTC meds not helping, and confusion about how
to “work” themselves and their loved ones through the journey of microbial invasion. This article responds to that need. Once the body’s microbial protective barriers (skin, mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, mouth and throat, good bacteria of the eyes, nose, mouth, throat and ears, and the body’s overall immune system functioning and energy levels) have been compromised, then pathogenic bacteria or viruses can invade the body. The resultant symptoms are red flags that our bodies raise to signal that a serious problem has occurred. Too often our “modern day” tactics aim only at suppressing those symptoms … this is not good! Many people stay sick too long because they suppress the symptoms and do not deal with the underlying infection. Our job is to directly attack the pathogenic microbes, increase all the body’s system functions and open the pathways of detoxification in order to clear out the debris. How? … Read on!
THE COMMON COLD: SYMPTOMS AND THEIR CORRESPONDING TREATMENTS The common cold is contracted 1 billion times per year in the U.S. and is the most commonly occurring illness in the world! There are over 200 viruses that cause the common cold with the rhinoviruses being the most common. Since the common cold is caused by viruses (primary invaders) then antibiotics will only help with secondary bacterial infections, as they target only bacteria. The only true way to know if a respiratory infection is bacterial or viral is to culture the mucus, phlegm or sputum. This is often time consuming and costly. Instead, too often, scripts are given for antibiotics without the knowledge of the infection being bacterial or viral. Or, if it is a bacterial infection, identifying the bacteria will assure the proper antibiotic prescription. Many decades of antibiotic misuse and overuse have created antibiotic resistance and therefore, stronger bugs. Some healthy people can fight off infections with minimal interventions. Others approach the fall and winter with an unhealthy, unbalanced stance allowing the body to be infected and reinfected. The common cold can develop into croup (most common in children), acute bronchitis, asthma and pneumonia. This was seen over and over again in the 2012-2013. Catarrh is an inflammation of mucus membranes in the respiratory tract/nasal passages, sinuses, throat, trachea and lungs. The inflammation occurs as a response to an invasion of microbes, and increases mucus and white blood cell production in an effort to kill and remove the microbes. Inflammation with increased mucus and white blood cell production will lead to coryza (congestion) or rhinorrhea (runny nose). • Directly kill the microbes (see box at right). • Decrease inflammation and therefore excess mucus production. ALJ is one of the best formulas for almost every type of respiratory problem, especially sinus and lung problems. It combines well with Garlic, Echinacea and Immune Stimulator. Sinus Support is an alternative to OTC antihistamines. It dries up excessive sinus drainage while working to improve digestion, expels excess phlegm and detoxifies the body. Fenugreek & Thyme act
as a decongestant and expectorant (effective for sinus headaches). • Support the immune system to prevent the spread of infection. Immune Stimulator does just that by boosting white blood cell count, enhancing antibody activity and helps the body to destroy microbes. It is made of beta glucans and various mushrooms. Trigger Immune (TCM) is great when the body is run down and weak. Astragalus and ginseng are its primary herbs, giving the body energy and improved immune function. • Promote the elimination of mucus and debris. The Nasal Irrigator is a large syringe with a rubber bulb on the end, similar but more effective than the Neti-pot. The use of salt and water or probiotics and water flush the nasal passages and the sinuses to promote expelling mucus and debris, free breathing and elimination of the infection. Coryza (congestion of the nasal passages due to the above-mentioned inflammation) can lead to head pain, fatigue, difficulty working/sleeping and sinus infections. • Use Decongestants (avoid post-nasal drip). Kali bichromium is a homeopathic remedy for thick mucus, Natrum muriaticum for post nasal drip. Four is a blend of herbs used mainly as a decongestant by thinning the mucus. It also relieves coughing by relaxing the lungs. Steam inhalation with Rosemary and Thyme essential oils. • Support the sinuses. Make sure the bowels are moving 3 times/day. Fiber, Magnesium Complex and Bowel Detox, Tei fu oil, Silver Shield in a nasal aspirator. Bayberry dispels mucus, clears sinuses and supports the immune system. Seasonal Defense helps decongest the sinuses, reduces inflammation and fights respiratory infections. Vitamin C is excellent for colds. Rhinorrhea is a runny nose. Rhinorrhea and sneezing are good symptoms for removing the mucus and debris from the upper respiratory tract. Preventing post-nasal drip is key here so that the infection does not spread to the throat. • Assist the body in clearing the sinuses and nasal passages. Nasal Irrigator, blowing the
nose often - use Aloe Vera Gel, Herbal Skin Treatment to heal skin around nose and lips. Sinusitis is inflammation of the sinuses due to infection. The concern is a severe or impacted infection. Apply hot compresses to the maxilla (cheek) and frontal (forehead) sinuses. Steam inhalations with Rosemary, Thyme and Tei fu oil. Also, CranioSacral Therapy, Antimicrobials (see box at right). Pharyngitis (or sore throat): Undiluted Liquid Chlorophyll, Celtic Sea Salt and water … gargle, Slippery Elm, Licorice, Aloe Vera and Marshmallow Teas, Tei fu oil on the back of the tongue, Sore Throat and Cough Syrup: in a glass jar fill 3 layers of chopped onions, raw honey, fresh lemon juice and Tei fu oil. Let sit at least 2 hours and swallow. Dry Cough with Burning, Painful, Lungs. • Lung Support TCM - a Chinese herbal combination acting as a tonic to moisten and nourish the lungs. • Tei fu oil in a humidifier and Tei fu oil or lotion on the chest! A good old natural essential oil version of Vicks Vapor Rub. • Demulcent herbs - soothing to the mucus membranes. Aloe Vera Juice, Marshmallow, Licorice Root and Slippery Elm. • Breathe Activator - a Chinese herbal combination providing nutritional support for the lungs and helps increase the flow of mucus to remove toxins. Fever is a good symptom to have as an increased body temperature helps to destroy microbes. Of course it doesn’t feel great to have a temp, but it was created for a purpose. Watch for a high temp; proper medical care should be taken as a temps climb to 103°. • Garlic Enemas will bring down a temp while cleansing the lower bowel. • Drink teas: Yarrow OR Peppermint and Chamomile combined to bring down the fever by promoting perspiration. • High Potency Garlic (or raw garlic on toast) • Essential oils (Bergamot, Chamomile, Jasmine, Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint) in cool water … use a washcloth to the forehead.

PREVENTION OF THE COMMON COLD & FLU
Hand washing and Use of Silver Shield Gel or Wipes • Boomerang Purifier to purify the air around you with Silver Shield Technology • Cover your mouth always when coughing or sneezing! A cough or sneeze sends thousands of respiratory droplets into the air at a speed of 47mph! • Tei fu essential oil: 10 drops in a small spray bottle with water. Constantly spray your area (especially when traveling) to prevent germs from spreading to you • Keep the back of your neck, or your “wind gate,” covered in the Fall.
ANTIMICROBIALS
• Silver Shield Liquid and Gel is a patented Aqua-Sol technology approved as non-toxic by the FDA and very effective for all microbes • VS-C (TCM) is a concentrated Chinese herbal combination used especially for viruses and when the energy is low, immune system is weak and the body is hot • Lauricidin is a highly absorbable, pure sn-1 monolaurin derived from coconut oil. This product is safe for the whole family and effective at promoting a strong immune defense while maintaining a healthy balance of good bacteria a nd yeast in the digestive tract. Good for all microbes • Echinacea purpurea (the ROOT!) enhances the immune system, promotes the production of antibodies, strengthens and clears lymph nodes, inhibits enzymes that promote the spread of infection, fights viral and bacterial infections and purifies the blood • High Potency Garlic is likened to nature’s penicillin and acts as a powerful decongestant and expectorant • Olive Leaf inhibits the growth of viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites by interfering with their reproduction and is very effective at reducing fevers • Elderberry D3fense is especially great for viruses and it boosts the immune system, improves lymphatic drainage and prevents the spread of infection • Yarrow is an excellent antiviral in addition to lowering fevers.

The downtown business district will be festively decorated in traditional 19th century style, and the lighting of the 3-story village Christmas tree is a sight to behold. You can count on groups of carolers singing Christmas songs, and a live reindeer parked at the Town Square. Horse and wagon rides will bring you back to the good old days, and plenty of activities will keep the kids entertained, including the ever-popular breakfast with Santa (a kid favorite!) This weekend is sure to jumpstart your Christmas spirit! Return to Ellicottville the following weekend for Ellicottville’s Christmas Stroll. Saturday, Dec. 7 will offer a special, old-fashioned Christmas celebration with events throughout the day, including a stop from Santa, a live camel sauntering around downtown, and the always-entertaining “reindog” parade. (Dress your pup up and join in!) The festivities end with a real live nativity at the Village Gazebo.

The Jefferson Inn offers convenient and thoughtful amenities for your stay. Located just behind the historic Town Hall, it is just a proverbial hop, skip, and jump away from Ellicottville’s array of business and entertainment. The converted 1800’s Victorian home has both B&B options (four rooms and a luxury suite are all named after former owners), as well as two efficiency suites, both with separate entrances. The efficiency suites are perfect for guests preferring additional privacy or who have children under twelve and/ or pets. All guests have year-round access to the hot tub and expansive sitting porches. Each room and suite comes with a private bath, bathrobes, hairdryers, central a/c and heat, an alarm clock that also serves as a CD player as well as a radio, outgoing phone lines, and, of course, ever present wireless internet for business and leisure travelers alike.
In its 8th year of business, Ellicottville’s Wingate By Wyndham Hotel continues to provide visitors with charm and class. Located conveniently in downtown Ellicottville, the hotel is within walking distance of village shops, restaurants and nightlife, and is equidistant from both ski resorts. Since its opening, the Wingate continues to invest in its goal of providing the most cozy and inviting atmosphere. Just last season, the hotel purchased new leather lobby furniture, a flatscreen TV, and expanded its breakfast nook to offer additional deluxe, gourmet, vegan, and kid-friendly options.
The Ilex Inn Bed & Breakfast is located far enough away from the hustle and bustle of the downtown business district to provide shelter from the noise, but close enough to enjoy a walk into town. It offers seven luxury guest rooms named after former Presidents of the United States, each with its own fireplace, private bath, unique décor, and of course cable television for those who choose not to fully depart with modernity during their Ellicottville getaway. From Washington to Kennedy, the rooms are sure to please. The private Kennedy Cottage behind the Ilex Inn’s main quarters offers a mini-kitchen and comes stocked with appropriate beverages. It features a private seating area as well. Choose the Madison for its floral awe, the Jefferson for its stately charm, or the Adams for simple chic. The adaptable Monroe offers a king-sized bed which can be separated into two twins - it is surely a favorite for travelers who do not wish to sleep in the same bed. The Washington is opulent and grandiose in style, also offering a king-sized bed. Finally, the Van Buren, which has been affectionately dubbed the “golfroom” due to the prevalence of golf-themed decorations, boasts a private entrance from the front porch. Each room also has plush terrycloth robes for after bathing or use of the Inn’s hot tub, located outside under shelter, so guests who use the Jacuzzi are shielded from the elements. Guests also have access to two private sitting rooms with fireplaces, formal dining and television. Couches and chairs offer comfort while sipping complimentary coffee or tea. The Ilex Inn boasts a collection of good reads, including antique issues of Life Magazine. Guests will see an array of covers framed on display in the upstairs sitting room. Summertime guests can enjoy a heated inground swimming pool and cozy outdoor furnishings ... you’ll find the perfect outdoor spot to relax on their country porch.
ACCOMMODATIONS
Each morning in the main house, owner Jean Kirsch prepares a gourmet, multi-course breakfast for her guests, beginning with homemade pastries and beverage of choice. Rooming options include the Elizabeth Hickey, which comes splashed with subtle yet vibrant lavender. Its king bed can be converted into twin beds and the room overlooks the village gazebo. A queen bed and view of the northern hills provide the Rose McMahon with its quaint comfort and style. The Nellie Frasier also has a king sized bed (which can be converted into twins) and settee overlooking Jefferson Street amidst walls decked in sea grass green. Wedgewood Blue walls outline the Robert Shankland; the room is named after the home’s original owner and its ambiance envisages his presence. Finally, the natural wood and jewel tones of the two-room Mary O’Rourke luxury suite present a spacious, elegant and sun-filled bedroom and sitting room with television and DVD. Downstairs, the Jefferson offers two sitting rooms. Read a book by the fire, sift through local and major newspapers, or play Chinese checkers. A drink station is stocked with nonalcoholic beverages - coffee, tea, soft drinks, and water. The Darcy and Garden efficiency suites both feature a gas fireplace, pullout loveseat and TV/DVD player. Each also has its own private front porch and kitchen, complete with a refrigerator, toaster oven, microwave, glasses, dishes, flatware, kettle and coffee maker with complimentary tea and coffee. The two suites can be combined into one for large parties. Patrons often comment on the number of thoughtful amenities the Jefferson Inn provides. Kirsch, a Buffalo native who spent her life in New York City, attributes that characteristic to her days traveling as a Wall Street businesswoman.

ACCESS TO THE GREAT OUTDOORS
Sports and outdoor enthusiasts will be thrilled to hear that guests to the B&B have access to 200 acres of land behind the quaint, fenced-in parcel. The land features trails and circles for hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling during the wintry months. When the season changes to summer, hiking and mountain biking are the top picks for these trails. Guests have full access!
THE INKEEPERS
Do not be fooled … the room marked “Jackson Chalet’” is not available for rent, nor is it named after President Andrew Jackson. It is innkeepers Rick and Glenda’s last name. The sign marks the entrance to their private residence and commercial kitchen, which are kept separate from guest quarters. Rick and Glenda served as members of southern Florida law enforcement for 25 years before purchasing the Ilex Inn three years ago. They have officially retired from law enforcement duty and now spend their time caring for guests.

Ahem ... No One Likes Seasonal Friends
Ellicottville’s “Off” Season Has Become More of an “On” Season: Discover a Ton of Exciting Outdoor Adventures in the 14731 Zip Code Once the Snow Melts By Pat Morgan
It’s safe to say if you’re reading this publication, you’re well aware of the ski resort prowess Holiday Valley and HoliMont bring to the table. Both are pioneers in their respective categories (public/private resorts), which continue to re-invest in their properties and the community of Ellicottville annually. But, should you find yourself visiting town in the “off-season,” you don’t need to worry about finding something to do. The summer months are very much an “on-season” here in the village and surrounding areas, and here’s proof …
Soar over the treetops at Sky High Adventure Park
WELCOME TO SKY HIGH
One of the most popular attractions bringing people to town these days is the Sky High Adventure Park at Holiday Valley, now in its sophomore season of operation. Speaking from experience, this park is AWESOME. $47 dollars gets you suited up into a harness that initially leaves you a bit confused how the whole process is going to go, yet after a thorough explanation and safety briefing by the Sky High staff, you’re off to the park. Multiple courses of different abilities await - from the novice lower level courses to the intimidating sounding “Commando” course. This course is no joke, and is a true feeling of accomplishment (if you can complete it). This past summer, Holiday Valley dropped an addition into the park, which they dubbed the “3-D Climbing Forest,” which adds even more to do in the park. The climbing forest consists of bouldering holds affixed to trees up to 60’ in height and varying difficulty, which can provide a challenge to even the most skilled climber. Rates start at just $15 for this part of the park. Unwind a bit after you tackle the courses with a ride down the fun-for-all-ages mountain coaster, and you’ve covered all your bases. I can guarantee you will leave Sky High exhausted and smiling. Given the popularity of the park, I suggest you call them at 716699-4444 to make a reservation.
TEST YOUR SKILLS ON THE LINKS
Sticking with the Holiday Valley theme for a moment, the Double Black Diamond golf course can be found at the main base area of Holiday Valley Resort. This par 70, approximately 6,000-yard course will challenge even the most polished handicapper. With spectacular views from many of the tee boxes, even if you’re having a heck of a time hitting that little white ball straight (guilty) you will still enjoy yourself. The resort offers packages if you’re looking to stay overnight, and a tee time is always recommended. You can make a tee time by calling 716-699-2345 or by stopping into the generously stocked Holiday Valley Golf Shop, where you certainly will be able to make yourself look like a pro, even if your swing isn’t up to “par.”
CHOOSE YOUR TRAIL
One of the other great secrets of the region is the incredible mountain biking trails found between Holiday Valley and HoliMont, as well as the surrounding hilly, forested terrain. Challenging single track mixed with a variety of other terrain are just one of the reasons the IMBA has went as far as to label the trails in the area “EPIC.” With over 35 miles of trails locally, you’re sure to find something that is up your alley, and you will certainly see why people come from far, far away to hit the trails here.
TIME TO COOL DOWN
All finished? Take a dip in Spruce Lake located between the two resorts, or go for a refreshing dip and cocktail at the lively Holiday Valley 3-pool complex and Cabana Bar. The pool complex is located adjacent to the Tamarack Club, and is beautifully landscaped with several multi-tiered sundecks. Season passes are available for the pool complex, and you’re sure to make a new friend or two at the Cabana Bar. It’s the perfect opportunity to send the kiddoes to a swim lesson, while you parents catch some rays and mingle amongst other adults for an afternoon.
AN OFF-SESAON FULL OF FESTIVALS
If you’re looking to stay more in the village of Ellicottville, it’s safe to say there will be something going on during your visit. Along with the notorious array of shops, bars and restaurants, Ellicottville plays host to a slew of festivals and celebrations throughout the “winter waiting period.” Among the largest is the Summer Music Festival, which brings in major recording artists to entertain the masses on a slopeside amphitheater at Holiday Valley. Another personal favorite of mine is the annual Taste of Ellicottville, which gives local restaurants the chance to show off samplings of their staple entrees, or venture into uncharted territory with some off-the-wall creation. A must attend event in my book. There is also the Jazz Festival, Rock n’ Roll Weekend which features killer tunes and an impressive village-wide car show, and of course everyone’s favorite event, Fall Festival, which literally completely transforms Ellicottville into a mass celebration of the approaching winter season. Beer tents, vendors, music, and of course the brilliant fall foliage we look forward to annually can be expected, so put on those party pants and stamp it on your calendar, or click on over to www.ellicottvilleny.com for a complete schedule of the year’s events. With so much to do, what are you waiting for? Get down to Ellicottville and take advantage of all the things we have to offer, no matter what the season is. After all, no one likes seasonal friends when there are four seasons of fun to be had … right here in this wonderful village!

The Enchanted Mountains ... Naturally Yours
Like Trails? Cattaraugus County, NY Boasts All Sorts of Trails, Offering a New Adventure Each Time You Visit
Deep in the heart of Allegany State Park (in Salamanca, NY), you’ll find cross-country skiers enjoying an historic trail that honors “the father of skiing in Western New York.” This trail system is considered one of the finest double-track systems in the Northeastern U.S. Art Roscoe was a long-time park forester and champion downhill racer who actively promoted the sport of skiing in the park. He spent time in the 1930s working to create two downhill ski jumps and the Bova downhill ski area. February 1935 marked the first jumping competition, and the areas remained popular through the 1960s until closing in the 1970’s. In 1979 Art Roscoe was recognized for his pioneering efforts in skiing and the extensive cross-country ski trail system was dedicated in his honor. The Art Roscoe Cross Country Ski Trails of Allegany State Park cover 24 miles (39 kilometers) of uninhabited, serene park land. Skiers from near and far travel to visit the area, which is located at one of the highest elevation points in the park. Many of labeled the trails within the park as some of the best in the area, and the natural beauty of the forest and landscape make for an exceptional experience. The skiing trails generally open around the third weekend in December – weather permitting. There is no cost to use the trails, but there is a charge if visitors rent equipment. Allegany State Park hosts a variety of events throughout the winter season including a relaxing “First Day Hike,” the always anticipated Trappers Special Dog Sled Races, and the annual Art Roscoe Loppert - a cross country ski race which raises funds for the Allegany Nordic Ski Patrol. In addition to special events, there are plenty of activities for park visitors. Allegany State Park offers 318 camping sites with 370 cabins, five group camps, full service cottages, and picnic areas. The park’s winterized cabins are perfect for winter camping trips with family. One thing is for sure … the scenery at Allegany State Park is a must-see for anyone visiting the park. As ASP Park Recreation Specialist Cassie Wright described, “Once visitors enter the park, they are immersed intimately into nature with the chance to view wildlife such as black bears, bobcats, white-tailed deer and much more in a natural habitat. The scenery just entering Allegany State Park is an amazing experience in itself.” For more information about Allegany State Park, its events or recreational activities, head over to the Cattaraugus County Tourism website at www.enchantedmountains.com.

Snowshoeing at Pfeiffer Nature Center
TRAIL TRANSPORTATION ALTERNATIVES
Allgeany State Park is also known for its snowmobiling, offering 91+ miles of riding trails. The park is considered one of the most well-groomed areas to snowmobile and is a “must-visit” adventure for anyone looking to get out on the sled. Snowmobiling has quickly grown to become one of the leading winter sports activities in Western New York, and benefits all kinds of businesses in the area. Trails aren’t limited to just Allegany State Park. Across the Enchanted Mountains of Cattaraugus County, you’ll find over 350 miles of state-funded snowmobile trails. Plan your trip – downloadable trail maps are available at www.enchantedmountains.com. The site also provides a list of the various snowmobile clubs in the area and snowmobile forums, all of which can give you additional information, tips and recommendations for your next ride. Looking to slow down your pace? Strap on a pair of snowshoes! Not only is it a great way to enjoy the outdoors, but a wonderful way to stay actively fit with the benefits of a terrific cardio workout. There are dozens of areas filled with trails to enjoy snowshoeing. Pfeiffer Nature Center of Portville, NY (www.pfeiffernaturecenter.org) offers miles of trails within their forests, waiting to be explored. If you don’t have your own pair of snowshoes, they’ll be happy to rent some to you. Another exciting and inspirational park to visit is Griffis Sculpture Park, located in East Otto, NY (www.griffispark.org). Take in the magnificence of over 250 larger-than-life steel sculptures - many of them created by the late Larry Griffis, Jr. - which are strategically and artistically placed within the woods, fields, and even ponds of the park. The 450-acre park, located only eight miles outside of Ellicottville, is not only a tremendous regional attraction, but holds the distinction of being one of America’s largest and oldest sculpture parks. If you’ve visited Griffis Sculpture Park during the summer months, wait til you see it covered in snow!

Two men had a dream … one a yarn salesman in NYC seeing lots of extra sweaters not being sold, and another with a store front on the west end of Salamanca next to his motel waiting to sell just the right merchandise. These two men, Cubby and Jack, developed a friendship, became business partners and thus, in 1968, Hampshire Knitting Mills Outlet was born. Forty-five years later, the family-owned store is now just Hampshire Mills and Mike (Cubby’s son), Susan (Mike’s wife) and Jenna (their daughter) continue the tradition. The business boasts a fantastic clothing department, with the addition of a gift shop full of souvenirs for the tourists. Hampshire Mills is fully stocked with sportswear, jackets, footwear, slippers and socks from Columbia, Woolrich, Killtec, Merrell, Sorel, Acorn, Lamo, Smartwool and Wigwam. Jenna is always finding great deals with savings up to 50% off manufacturer’s suggested retail prices. The store also offers Salamanca and Allegany State Park t-shirts and sweatshirts, mugs, shot glasses and more. Unique gifts like sand pictures, Melissa and Doug toys, Northern Light candles, bamboo and metal wind chimes, oils and incense, Willow Tree angels & statues, food items like McCutcheon’s jams and jellies, Bone Suckin sauces, Wind and Willow dips and soups can also be found in the gift area. Their “What a Deal” section features items under $5 like bear claw back scratchers and other cool gadgets, key chains, and more. In honor of their 45th anniversary, throughout the month of October Hampshire Mills will have a Chinese Auction of gifts - all proceeds will benefit breast cancer awareness. There will be a “For Girls Only” breast cancer awareness wind chime made in the USA from QMT valued at $68, a Spa basket, a Sunday Morning Breakfast basket, a beautiful dream catcher made and donated by John Buck, Jr. in honor of his grandmother who died of breast cancer, plus several other items. The business, which previously served as a railroad dormitory - and during prohibition a speakeasy - has been in continuous operation for over 120 years. Wendy O’Neil, current owner (who is also a real estate broker for ERA Team VP Real Estate in Ellicottville), has colored the lodge with tasteful and quirky decorations, yet maintained its original paneling of American chestnut. Myers Steakhouse & Inn serves a topnotch cut of beef that will tempt you each time you come in to dine. In fact, O’Neil spent a considerable amount of time seeking out the cut of 21 to 30 day aged beef. She made sure to find a supply that would not, in her words, “be shot with hormones or pumped with chemicals.” Options include bone in ribeye (on occasion) and several Black Angus steak selections. Additional menu options are available for seafood lovers, including famed day-boat scallops. Myers will also be introducing some great tasting comfort foods such as chicken & biscuits, when their new menu is released (at the end of October). Monday through Thursday combination food and drink specials include pizza and wing night, as well as Taco Tuesdays. Homemade salad dressings are featured in-house and are also available for purchase. The wine list offers a great assortment, including O’Neil’s own homemade spiced wine.
BIGGER AND BETTER
THEME NIGHT
The newly renovated, clean and comfortable Holiday Inn Express & Suites is a reliable choice for anyone seeking some rest and relaxation after all that shopping, dining and playing, and it’s located only 11 miles from Ellicottville skiing (off the I-86 at exit 20). According to General Manager Ruth-Ann Zink, the staff is “magnificently knowledgeable and friendly.” The hotel, which offers 68 neatly appointed rooms and has been in operation for over ten years, is native-owned (meaning guests are spared New York State taxes). Guests can enjoy the heated indoor pool, whirlpool, free deluxe continental breakfast includig delicious cinnamon rolls, and high-speed wireless Internet. The spacious lobby features comfortable seating, a stone fireplace and décor reflective of the Seneca Nation. Each room features a micro/fridge, coffee maker, hair dryer, iron/ironing board and a fresh new look as of this year. “Our guests can enjoy the scenery along the Amish Trail and in Allegany State Park, which is practically in our backyard!” stated Zink. “We’re just down the street from Seneca Allegany Casino and Seneca Gaming & Entertainment, both of which provide free 24-hour shuttles to our hotel.” Unlike many other hotels, Holiday Inn Express & Suites offers a very lenient cancellation policy: If a room is booked in advance, guests have until 6pm the night of arrival to cancel without incurring any penalties. Given the uncertainty of snow conditions during the ski season, the option to cancel is as easy as a phone call, and relieves any stress that would normally accompany the thought of cancellation. “We also offer pet rooms for a fee, and have connections for pet boarding so guests’ pets do not have to stay alone while their parents are out skiing or gambling,” Zink mentioned. The hotel also has meeting space available for those smaller needs. On top of all it has to offer, Holiday Inn Express & Suites has completed many major renovations over the spring and summer months, adding to its overall attractiveness. Check into what guests have called a “bright star” for Salamanca.
In 2010, Seneca Gaming & Entertainment remodeled and expanded its Salamanca facility to include twelve poker tables, both smoking and non-smoking bingo areas, concessions with an eating area, and retail. Free coffee and popcorn are available in the video gaming area. For additional information on Seneca Gaming & Entertainment and both their Salamanca and Irving, New York locations, as well as a specials calendar, head to their website at www.senecagames.com.
Along with serving fantastic food in a casual and relaxed atmosphere, Myers is also becoming well known for their “theme” nights, in which staff and patrons dress the part and truly get into the spirit of a different theme the last Friday of each month. Keep an eye out for live music, and don’t forget to ask the staff about stories from the building’s rich history, including its three resident ghosts who haunt the upstairs guest rooms.

STAY IN LUXURY, STAY AND SKI!
The AAA Four Diamond Award–winning hotel at Seneca Allegany Casino & Hotel offers 11 levels to provide you an unforgettable stay. Just last year in late 2012, an expanded hotel tower opened - increasing the number of deluxe rooms from 212 to 413. Among the new rooms are nine 735-square-foot corner suites and nine 710-square-foot end suites. The corner suites feature an upscale oversized bathroom with dual sinks, a very large shower with a tower of pulsating jets, and a chaise lounge. This is adjacent to a relaxing bubble tub that faces a unique floating divider wall and flat-screen TV. The end suites have similarly luxurious oversized bathrooms with the same shower system, and also feature a lounge/cocktail area with its own large screen TV and sound system, completely separate from the bedroom. The new tower also offers the ability for guests to purchase super-suites, which consist of an end suite, corner suite, and deluxe King room sectioned-off at the far end of the floor. All 413 rooms offer spectacular views of the Allegheny Mountains - especially newly-created rooms facing south, which will have completely unobstructed mountain vistas. All existing rooms also received $1.2 million in renovations and look just like rooms in the expanded tower. Every hotel room features upscale amenities such as a pillow-top bed, oversized shower, and flat-screen TV. And, free wireless Internet access is now available through the entire resort. Finally, when you stay at the hotel, be sure to also take a dip in our refreshing indoor pool and steamy whirlpool, and get your heart pumping inside our recently expanded workout facility. No seat is further than 100 feet of the stage, and two oversized high-definition video screens in the venue make every seat feel like the “best seat in the house.” You can also catch live regional entertainment during weekend evenings for free at the Casino Bar, located in the heart of the casino floor. Upcoming entertainment this fall at the Seneca Allegany Events Center includes some of country music’s finest bands as well as a dash of classic rock. The following weekend on Sunday, Oct. 20, Wynonna & The Big Noise visit Salamanca for an early evening of country music. Their debut in 2010 included the single, “Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not,” which reached No. 1 on the charts and was nominated for more than a dozen music industry awards. Throughout 2012 and 2013, Thompson Square was named Top Vocal Duo by the Academy of Country Music Awards and the Country Music Association Awards. Just before the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday on Saturday, Nov. 23, the Charlie Daniels Band will take the entertainment stage in Salamanca. The group, led by Daniels’ signature fiddle and vocals, provides an instantly-recognizable blend of country and Southern rock with tunes such as “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” and “Uneasy Rider.” Finally, just announced for five shows from Wednesday, Dec. 4 through Sunday, Dec. 8 is the Sha Na Na Rockin’ Christmas Tour. Sha Na Na has performed for audiences worldwide for more than 40 years, and gained national fame as part of the original Woodstock Festival. They later lent their trademark 1950’s doo-wop sound when appearing in the classic 1978 movie, “Grease.” The Events Center will be set up at half-size with a maximum capacity of approximately 1,150 seats to allow for better viewing and greater audience interaction. Tickets for all shows are available at Seneca Casino box offices, Ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster locations or by phone at 800-745-3000.

Wynonna
Five-time Grammy Award Winning Country Singer Brings Her New Band (and Big Noise) to SENECA ALLEGANY CASINO
A Conversation with Wynonna HULICK: You’re a five-time Grammy award winner, a Best Selling author … JUDD: Oh, stop it! (laughs) HULICK: Is there anything else you want to do that you haven’t done? JUDD: Brain surgery. HULICK: What? JUDD: (laughs) Honestly I am in a state of shock that I’ve gotten away with as much as I have that I don’t have an answer for that. I just live and keep walking and God directs me in my path. HULICK: Describe yourself to me. JUDD: I am very much about being a dreamer. You wake up one day and you have this dream, and I know it’s corny, but “build it and they will come.” I believe strongly in trying … when I do my speaking engagements I ask the audience, “What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?” You can see the light go on in people. I cannot tell you how many letters I get from people that say, “You know what? If you can do it, I know I’m going to try and do it.” Then I get a letter saying, “I did it!”
.............................. Sunday, Oct. 20 | Seneca Allegany Casino By Melanie Hulick Country superstar and Best Selling author, Wynonna, will make a stop at Seneca Allegany Casino for one show Sunday, Oct. 20 at 5pm. One half of the mother/daughter duo “The Judds,” who are known for mega hits like “Mamma He’s Crazy” and “Grandpa (Tell Me ‘Bout The Good Old Days),” and who won every major award from the early 1980’s to 1991, the singer has proven she is a fierce solo artist with her unmistakable powerful voice. For a decade The Judds were unstoppable, selling more than 20 million albums, and as a solo artist, more than 10 million albums sold has been added to Wynonna’s amazing 30 year career, which not only includes some of the biggest hits in country music, but you can add Best Selling author to the list with 2005’s memoir, “Coming Home To Myself” and 2012’s fictional work, “Restless Heart.” Judd’s story is one of triumph over adversity, not only in her musical career, but also in her personal life, when in August of 2012 her husband and drummer, Michael “Cactus” Moser, lost a leg in a terrible motorcycle accident. I had the chance to speak with the singer on one of her rare days off from her tour. We talked about the accident, her stint on Dancing With The Stars and her connection to the area. What has kept the country legend going for over 30 years? “For me it’s about following your passion. I decided I’m going to be 50 next year and I am going to try and get away with as much as possible,” she said laughing. With a new single out, “Something You Can’t Live Without,” which is part of her new album she is working on, Wynonna is back doing what she was born to do. Telling her that I was looking forward to her upcoming show and that I have seen her before, she quickly responded, “Oh, but I’m so sassy now … so you better watch out!” Adding, “I hope everyone will come out. I guarantee you we’ll laugh, cry and celebrate.”
..............................
HULICK: You just finished a long string of shows. Is it difficult to keep up that pace when you have so much going on in your life? JUDD: I just did nine shows in 11 days and it almost killed me. (laughs) But I had so much fun and I came home absolutely exhausted. I stayed in bed yesterday just resting. That’s what I do … I literately go as if it’s the last tour, because God knows with what I’ve been through with Cactus, that your life can get down to seconds, not even moment to moment … seconds. So for me I have a totally newfound appreciation for every single day. HULICK: How is Cactus doing? JUDD: He’s in the next room doing physical therapy, which is a daily process. He’s going to always be in a process so he can be moving and grooving and be the animal that he is again. A guy just got in touch with my manager and said they just developed an aquatic leg and they would like Cactus to be the spokesperson. HULICK: Let’s talk about Dancing With The Stars. JUDD: Oh, people were like … what the heck is she doing that for? I was terrified but I decided to do it because I’ve been in a room for nine months taking care of my husband and I just wanted to jump back in the game. HULICK: Well you were awesome. JUDD: Well you know what I was? I was a student. First of all you wear those stinking high heels! I’m telling you that there were days when I couldn’t even get out of bed. I had ice on my legs constantly. To start out, we were practicing four hours a day for eight weeks. So while I was practicing for the show I went to “Hollyweird” and got an apartment, which you might as well stick me in the middle of Manhattan. I live on a 1,000-acre farm, so I’m not a big city girl. I showed up, I tried and God spared me because when I got home, although I was sad to leave Tony Dovolani and the team work, I was glad to get back to work on my album, which is what my gift is. You know I don’t usually talk about this, but I will tell you this, because I think it’s important for other women who read this. I was a size eight before the accident. I was a newlywed; I had all the cute clothes hanging in the closet. I went from that to a nurse. I gained weight, I didn’t exercise every day. I took care of my husband; that’s what we do. So I did DWTS knowing I wasn’t in shape because I wanted women to see how to accept where you are today. You may not be where you want to be, but you’re sure as heck not where you were. So that was my message. HULICK: Do you have a connection to the Buffalo area? JUDD: Yes, half my family lives in Buffalo. I was raised Italian, my grandparents came from Sicily, and a lot of my “peeps” are up in the Buffalo area. I love playing that area. I’ve always had a great following and support system there. HULICK: This interview will be appearing in the first Ellicottville Snowed-In issue of this season. Maybe we will have snow when you get here. JUDD: Hey, bring it on sister!
Tickets to Wynonna & The Big Noise at Seneca Allegany Casino in Salamanca start at $30 and can be purchased through www.senecacasinos.com or at any Ticketmaster outlet. For more on Wynonna, visit www.wynonna.com

TRAIL CENTRAL
What Does Your Perfect Trail Look Like? Fall Fun in the Allegheny National Forest Region of Pennsylvania
Catch the Geocaching Fever ... “The Great Finding Bigfoot” Geotrail Awaits!
In the Fall, Mother Nature paints a wide brush stroke of vivid colors across the forest lands of the Allegheny National Forest Region in Pennsylvania. Towering green pine trees are dotted between the yellow maples, brilliant orange and vivid scarlet colors of a diverse hardwood forest. Located just minutes south of Ellicottville, the Forest sprawls over 513,000 acres and offers a wide choice of magical trip ideas for fun in the forest during the fall season.
HUNTING FOR TREASURE If you are seeking a fun and interactive way to get outdoors, try geocaching. Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunt. It mixes the thrill of a hike in the woods with the technology of using a handheld GPS unit and global positioning coordinates to find a “cache.” Caches can be hidden treasure boxes, or other items that you use a GPS or a smart phone, along with written clues, to try to locate. Once having found the hidden cache, you receive secret codes, trinkets, or other information that will lead you on a quest to obtain a trackable geocoin. To get started, all you have to do is enter a zip code on geocaching.com and a list of caches will be given to you. Caches are rated by difficulty. There is no cost to register and geocaching is a sport that all ages can participate in. In the Allegheny National Forest, you can learn to geocache! Begin your adventure with the Kinzua Cache Quest along the Kinzua Valley Trail in Westline, PA, or join in the fun finding Bigfoot along “The Great Finding Bigfoot” Geocache. If you would like to learn more about geocaching and GPS, sign up to attend the upcoming course, Introduction to GPS and Geocaching, that will be held Oct. 12, 2013, from 10am-1pm at the Kinzua Bridge State Park in Mt. Jewett, PA. Attendees will participate in a gentle 1.5-mile geocaching treasure hunt on the Kinzua Bridge State Park’s trails. You will learn how to navigate through appropriate GPS screens, use the GPS unit to find a geocache, and practice geocaching etiquette. GPS equipment will be provided for use. Youths 10 years of age and older are welcome to participate, but must register with a parent. Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes and pack a lunch and water. The class will be held rain or shine, costs $20 per person to participate, and is organized by the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford and staff from the Kinzua Bridge State Park. To pre-register, call 814-362-5078 or e-mail contined@pitt.edu.
KINZUA CACHE QUEST
Taking you into some beautiful country along Kinzua Creek in the Westline area is the Kinzua Cache Quest. (Westline is located approximately 45 minutes via Route 219 south from Ellicottville.) To begin, pick up one of the Kinzua Cache Quest brochures located at the Westline trailhead, or at the Westline Inn. You can also download and print the brochure from www.kinzuavalleytrail.org. Use the coordinates on the brochure to locate the four caches while enjoying a hike along the Kinzua Valley Trail. As you find each cache, record the secret code found on the underside of each cache lid. When you have recorded all four secret codes, send the completed brochure to the Kinzua Valley Trail Club and they will reward your hard work and love of the trail with a trackable geocoin. Dive deep into history at the Zippo/Case Museum of Bradford
THE GREAT FINDING BIGFOOT GEOTRAIL
For the more adventurous geocachers, embark on the Great Finding Bigfoot GeoTrail which includes 30 locations. Launched in October 2013, this geotrail will take you deep within the forests and towns of Trail Central which is McKean County, Pennsylvania. As you search for caches, you will travel the footpaths of the first pioneer settlers on the Allegheny Plateau, wood hicks, wildcatters, bootleggers, outdoorsman, and possibly Big Foot. Animal Planet filmed in the Forest last year and reported positive signs of Bigfoot! Real or not, it is fun to imagine where he might be within the forest. This fun geocache trail will lead you to an eclectic assortment of possible locations. To participate, go online to www.visitANF.com and download The Great Finding Bigfoot GeoCache brochure, or pick up a copy of the brochure at the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau Welcome Center, located at 80 E. Corydon Street in Bradford, PA. Follow the GPS coordinates and hints to find the Bigfoot caches. Record the secret code found in each geocache on the form. Mail the completed form to the ANF Visitors Bureau at the address on the reverse side. All participants that submit their correctly completed Finding Bigfoot GeoTrail form will receive a free trackable Bigfoot Geocoin along with being entered into a grand prize drawing next September for a free GPS unit. Geocoins are limited to one per person.
SPARK YOUR INTEREST WITH ZIPPO Zippo lighters were invented in 1932, and are still manufactured in the City of Bradford, Pennsylvania, where you will find the Zippo/Case Museum - the most visited museum in northern PA. Every Zippo lighter tells a story, and some of these Zippo lighters are priceless. The collectibles market is extremely subjective, and any given piece is worth only what someone else is willing to pay for it. Although there are Zippo lighters that have brought quite a bit of money to the finder, collecting Zippo lighters is about fun, about

It’s the perfect destination if rustic elegance and fine dining are on your wish list of fall activities. history, about people. The Zippo story began in the early 1930s at the Bradford Country Club. George G. Blaisdell watched a friend fumbling to light a cumbersome Austrian-made lighter. The lighter worked well, even in the wind, but its appearance was utilitarian and its use required two hands. Blaisdell set out to refashion the Austrian lighter into a lighter that would look good and be easy to operate. He fabricated a rectangular case and attached the top of the lighter to the case with a hinge. He retained the chimney design, which protected the flame under adverse conditions, and one night in 1933, above a garage in Bradford, George G. Blaisdell pushed the first insert into the first case of what would be the very first Zippo lighter. That first lighter, currently displayed at the Zippo/Case Museum in Bradford, is now one of over 500 million Zippo lighters produced in Bradford. The name “Zippo” was coined by George Blaisdell as a variation of the word “zipper,” simply because he liked the sound of it. The first Zippo lighter sold for $1.95. From the very beginning, every Zippo windproof lighter has been backed by Blaisdell’s unconditional guarantee that “It works or we fix it for free” - a guarantee still honored today. At the Zippo/Case Museum, you will find a retail store containing the most complete line of Zippo and Case products in the world. Visitors can browse the museum in a selfguided tour of engaging, interactive kiosks and exhibits that showcase the rich history of two America icons, Zippo lighters and Case knives. At the Zippo/Case Museum you can also find their newest line of products created for use in the great outdoors. The Zippo/Case Museum is located at 1932 Zippo Drive in Bradford, PA, off Route 219 just 10 miles south of I-86. Hours are Monday through Saturday 9am-5pm, and Sunday 11am-4pm. For additional information call 814-368-1932 or visit www.zippo.com.
THE OLD SCHOOLHOUSE VILLAGE SHOPPES The Olde Schoolhouse Village Shoppes feature one-of-a-kind items that are functional, beautiful and affordable. As part of your treasure hunt in the Forest, we suggest a trip to this delightful co-op shopping experience. The ambiance of the shop in the fall is
delightful - pumpkins and corn husks decorate the outside, and inside the scent of apple cider surrounds you. The shop is an authentic, old schoolhouse that was remodeled into a shopping co-op with over 80 vendors. Each previous school classroom is now a showcase retail shop offering a themed shopping experience. You can browse for treasures at the following shops: Shop Antiques & Vintage, Reclaimed Treasures & Handcrafted Items, Educational Toys, Shabby Chic, Beach Cottage, American Farmhouse, Authentic & Reproduction Colonial, Primitive Country, Rustic Cabin & Western, and Americana/Civil War & WWII. The Olde Schoolhouse Village Shoppes are located at 109 Indian Creek Road in Eldred, PA. Hours are Wednesday through Saturday 10am-5pm. For additional information call 814-225-2255 or visit www.oldschoolhousevillageshoppes.com.
PLAN YOUR VISIT A wide range of lodging choices are available in the ANF Region of Pennsylvania, including romantic bed & breakfasts such as the Mountain Laurel Inn of Bradford, the Mansion District Inn of Smethport, and the Kane Manor of Kane, PA. In addition, you can find rustic cabins and campsites in forest locations, or stay at the Westline Inn, where the owner Jonathan says, “We’re not fancy enough to be a bed & breakfast; we like to think of ourselves as a bed & a meal.” (Note, the meals at Westline Inn are always delicious; we recommend the fresh fish or filet.) If rustic isn’t your style, go the complete opposite and stay at a deluxe lodge with plush amenities and fine dining - Glendorn, a Relais & Chateaux property, www.glendorn.com.
