A TOUCH OF ELLICOTTVILLE LOCATED DOWNTOWN: 28 Washington Street • 716.699.5385 “PUT THIS MOTHER / SON TEAM TO WORK FOR YOU!” By Dash Hegeman It is very easy to take certain necessities for granted. A roof over your head. A comfortable place to lie down at night. A stocked refrigerator. In this “land of the free, home of the brave” country of ours, you would like to think that everyone had access to these things. Sadly, as we all know, that is not the reality in which we live. Poverty exists. Children go to bed hungry. And far too many people turn a blind eye to the fact that, as great as this country has the potential to be, there are far too many people out there who need assistance. Luckily for those people in need, there are individuals and agencies out there with the wherewithal and aspiration to make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate. Here in Cattaraugus County, one of those agencies is Cattaraugus Community Action, where there is an array of programs that aim to better the lives of people in need of a little assistance. One creative way that Community Action has taken to fundraising over the past four years is by incorporating the idea of the Empty Bowls Dinner. “Empty Bowls dinners are part of a national event begun by the Imagine Render Group so local hunger-prevention agencies can defray costs associated with providing food to the hungry, and as a way to raise awareness,” said Sharon Turano, the Volunteer Coordinator for Community Action. “Having heard of them done by other area pantries, we thought it would be a good way, not only to make money for the soup kitchen (always in need of dishwasher, refrigerator or other repairs), but also to raise awareness that hunger is not just a far-a-way problem, but a local one, also.”

“Over 19% of our population and 31.2% of children in Cattaraugus live below the poverty level,” stated Tina Zerbian, MSEd, Chief Executive Officer of Cattaraugus Community Action. “The Empty Bowls Dinner is one way that we bring awareness to these challenges and do our part to counteract conditions of hunger and malnutrition.” But just what does an Empty Bowls Dinner entail, you ask? Well, they feature local artists who craft their own unique bowls. People purchase tickets (only $10) for the event, which gets them a dinner where the bowls are featured. Ticket holders get to take the empty bowl at their seat home with them as a reminder of what others are forced to deal with. According to the Imagine Render Group’s website, one in eight Americans deal with food insecurity on a daily basis. What makes this event even more unique is that all the food for the event is prepared by Community Action’s Food for Thought program. John Haley, the culinary arts instructor for the program, stated that it began four years ago so those looking for jobs in the culinary field are “a step ahead” of other applicants. Cattaraugus Community Action is housed in a former school building so the kitchen area serves as the classroom. Haley said, “The classes teach ServSafe, so those graduating from the culinary arts training have basic fundamentals, giving them the best possible chance to get ahead.” A youth Food for Thought class is held in the summer for about nine youth who prepare dinners for the Aug. 11 Empty Bowls Dinner; adult 15-week classes have 8 to 15 people in the class. Anyone interested in learning more about Food for Thought can call Patsi Magara at 716-945-1041 ext. 140

Without a doubt the primary function of the Empty Bowls Dinner is to raise funds and awareness about a very serious issue. With that said, it is also a creativity showcase of sorts. Local artists help to make this event unique to this area. Some of this year’s featured artists include: Hogshed Pottery, Huntington Studios, Golden Hills Studios, Peter Georgen, Carson Waterman (he also donated a print that will be raffled off at the event), and the Native American Artist Guild. On top of that, groups like students from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, Great Valley Baptist Church youth group, Salamanca High School art classes, home-school students fulfilling art credits, Salamanca Youth Bureau, and Machias Summer Recreation participants all contributed to the creation of bowls for the fundraiser. One important note to make is that all funds raised stay in the community and go directly to Cattaraugus Community Action’s soup kitchen, which is open daily from 3:30-4:45pm and historically serves over 16,000 meals annually. The soup kitchen is housed at Cattaraugus Community Action, 25 Jefferson Street in Salamanca. It is one of numerous programs offered by CCA. The Seneca Allegany Casino provides leftovers from the buffet every day. The kitchen is run by volunteers and overseen by a Community Action-hired chef. For more information on the Empty Bowls Dinner, check out www.ccaction.org or call 716-945-1041.

Loosen Those Belt Buckles ... It’s Time to TASTE!

Experience ALL of Ellicottville’s Dining Establishments - the Classics and Some New Creations are in the Works By Mark Flanagan Street food: it speaks to something primal in the human condition. There is a feeling of fundamental satisfaction that arises when you get your gums around a skewer of greasy meat. Frequently, the noises you make while enjoying this food are involuntary and down-right animalistic. Street food is comfort food, but it’s also more than that. Taking to the streets gives you the authentic taste of wherever you find yourself. Fresh and local ingredients combine to paint a picture of the culture, and I can think of few festivals that paint this picture better for our town than the annual Taste of Ellicottville. The Taste of Ellicottville enters its 30th year this August - a huge landmark for any event. The festival has historically featured an array of tents designed to dish out tasty food at a low price. Chamber of Commerce member Chris Chapman describes the festival as “a great way for people to come in and sample all of the quality food that these establishments have to offer.” The Chamber was also excited to announce that the food supplier corporation, Sysco, will be returning as the Presenting Sponsor for this year’s Taste. Chamber Executive Director Brian McFadden had this to say: “As a part of the long-lasting relationship between Sysco and the Ellicottville restaurants, it is always great to have Sysco as a partner of the Taste of Ellicottville. Through Sysco’s continued support, we are able to continue to provide an exceptional experience for one of Ellicottville’s favorite family events.” This year’s Taste of Ellicottville will take place Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 1516 from noon-4pm both days. Tickets for food can be purchased at the Chamber of Commerce tent during the event and will cost $1 each, with most food prices ranging between $1 and $4. People’s Choice Awards will be given out at the end of the event with categories including Best Drink, Best Dessert, and Best Overall. Over 20 participating restaurants promise to roll out some of their fan favorites, as well as some exciting new dishes to keep your taste buds alive. Bike and Bean, everyone’s favorite place for gears and guacamole, will be featuring their famous burritos as always with all-natural, GMO-free ingredients; these burritos can come with the green chili that is ineffably delicious and spicy. Quesadillas either chicken or veggie - will provide the other main staple of Bike and Bean’s tent; add a side of blue corn chips and guacamole – yum! All of this clean goodness can be washed down with an organic fruit smoothie or a Blue Sky natural root beer. For the nutritionally-stern, owner Dennis Baldwin noted that there will also be a variety of gluten-free or vegan options available upon request. Katy’s Café has proven itself as a force to be reckoned with on the Ellicottville Strip. Some of the classics owner Katy Arena guarantees to roll out this year include pulled pork, grilled eggplant, and their absolutely wonderful blue mushroom soup (it’s amazing!) New dishes consist of artichoke parmesan and lemon soups, pizza stuffed mushrooms, and refreshing watermelon mint and feta salads. Dessert promises to be decadent this year as Katy unveils an apple whiskey caramel sundae with bacon on top. I’m not usually one for savory elements in my desserts, but this one will be near impossible to pass up.

Look for the Bau buns at EBC’s Taste booth

The Ellicottville Brewing Company has established itself not only as a monolith of great drinks, but great food as well. In addition to the classic pairs-great-withcold-beer Shepard’s pie, EBC will be dishing up some new instant classics this year. The food has gone East with the introduction of “Bau buns,” a typical Asian street food. These buns are fist-sized nuggets of delight, stuffed with tasty treats like Mahi Mahi, roasted pork, and jalapenos. Another item to look forward to is the creamy and uber-Italian Burrata Mozzarella. If these fail to completely satisfy (something I sincerely doubt), EBC graciously prepares its very own lobster bake at the terminus of the festival. These lobsters will be flown in from Maine and steamed on site, so if you love seafood as much as I do, you won’t want to miss this. (Contact EBC for reservations.) The Taste lets you realize the full scope of Ellicottville’s diverse culinary scene in one fell swoop. While this article may only spotlight a few restaurants, there are plenty of other great places to sample including Madigan’s, John Harvard’s, The Silver Fox, and Cadillac Jack’s – just to name a few. I know that it’s one of the festivals I look forward to most every year, and this year’s event promises to be even better than the last. So, grab some friends and map out your feast … I guarantee that you won’t leave the Taste disappointed. (Click over to www.ellicottvilleny.com for a complete map and menu of this year’s Taste.)

THE SUMMER LOCAL ~ AUGUST 2015 ... Page 07

THE SILVER FOX STEAKHOUSE HAS BEEN SERVING DELICIOUS FOOD AND DRINKS FOR 40 YEARS IN ELLICOTTVILLE. GERRY AND MIKE NICKOLSON HAD A VERY SIMPLISTIC VISION IN 1974 ... “CREATE AN EATING AND DRINKING ESTABLISHMENT WITH THE SINGLE PURPOSE OF PLEASING GUESTS.” JUMP AHEAD A “FEW” YEARS LATER AND YOU CAN FIND MIKE GRILLING STEAKS TO PERFECTION 6 DAYS A WEEK. HIS ATTENTION TO DETAIL IS FLAWLESS AND HE STILL BELIEVES THE SINGLE PURPOSE IS TO PLEASE EVERY GUEST THAT HAPPENS BY ... Owner Mike Nickolson and Chef Ben Watson take enormous pride in blending new ideas with signature dishes to create the very best dining experience for their patrons ...

THE CERTIFIED ANGUS BEEF PROGRAM

The Silver Fox Steakhouse is enrolled in the Certified Angus Beef (CAB) program. What does this mean? The CAB brand reduces the odds of a tough steak by nearly 300% over USDA Choice. The CAB brand requires the following criteria: 1. Marbling - the main contributor of beef juiciness, flavor and tenderness. CAB brand must be medium to fine marbling texture. 2. Maturity - beef harvested at the right time will have superior color, tenderness, texture and firmness. CAB brand selects only “A” classification, which is cattle harvested younger than approx. 30 months of age. 3. Consistent Sizing - steaks are thicker and more uniform in size. 4. Quality Appearance and Assured Tenderness.

All of the Silver Fox’s menu steaks are CAB brand: 6 or 8 ounce tenderloin 12 ounce bone-in strip steak 12 ounce rib-eye 16 ounce dry-aged bone in rib-eye

RAW DRY-AGED RIBEYE | DRY-AGED RIBEYE STEAK

DRY-AGING

The 16 ounce dry-aged bone in rib-eye is one of the restaurant’s more popular steaks. Dry-aging is the process of wet-aging in vacuum packaging for a minimum of 30 days, then the beef is dry-aged for an additional 28 days. The beef develops a tangy, earthy scent, different sheen and smooth texture. Flavors become more concentrated and beefier.

WAGYU STRIP STEAKS AND BURGERS Every night The Silver Fox offers a variety of appetizer and entrée specials. One of their premier special entrees that has been very well received is the 10 ounce Wagyu strip steak. Wagyu (Japanese Cow) is intensely marbled with softer fats, has higher percentages of mono-saturated fats, Omega-6 fatty acids and is lower in cholesterol than commodity beef. The combination of these fats deliver a distinctive rich and tender flavor compared to no other beef. Chef Ben Watson grew up in Missouri until he was 16. He has lived and worked in Ellicottville for the past nine years, and possesses a passion to execute and deliver the very best food. He is the brainchild for The Silver Fox’s delightful 8 ounce Wagyu Burger: eight ounces of delicious Wagyu burger grilled with GUSTO and topped with aged-cheddar, in-house cherry smoked bacon, Bourbon braised onions and chipotle ketchup, all tucked away in a tasty onion brioche roll.

OTHER RESTAURANT DELIGHTS

The Silver Fox’s made-in-house Bacon can be found in a variety of dishes. Chef Ben starts with Berkshire Pork Belly that is dry rubbed with cherry bark, brown sugar and salt to create a cure. It is cured for 2.5 weeks, then cherry smoked for 8-10 hours. Heavenly … WAGYU BURGER Not only do we eat at The Silver Fox, but imbibing is a priority as well! The Fox has rolled out Crispin Hard Ciders – classically refined as a traditional “sweet beer” beer alternative. They are crisp, clean, and excellent on a hot summer day! Featured are the following: • Crispin Natural Hard Pear Cider • Crispin Natural Blackberry Pear • Crispin Natural Hard Apple Cider Another tasty option … a lovely Sangria de Cava prepared tableside Torres brandy, Torres orange liqueur with fresh oranges, lime and cherries. If that hasn’t peaked you interest enough, The Fox houses the largest Bourbon collection in Ellicottville, which owner Mike Nickolson has hand selected (and tasted) himself!

Brain POWER By Kristina Barlow, N.D., C.S.T.

The Standard American Diet (S.A.D.) will give us S.A.D. Brains (and S.A.D. Bodies). IF we eliminate poor forms of sugar, refined carbohydrates (especially wheat), processed fats and oils, adulterated dairy and food chemical toxicity, THEN we can recreate HighFunctioning and HAPPY Brains. In addition to dietary changes, both detoxification and supplementation will also aid in focus, concentration, memory, intelligence and overall brain function. The brain is extremely sensitive to nutritional problems, creating dysfunctions first in thought and mood before any physical illness is seen. Do you desire better brain function? I believe we all do. Epigenetics is the science showing that the body has markers - called the epigenome - that switch genes on and off. Diet, exercise, detoxification and supplementation all can improve the way your genetics are expressed. This genetic information is passed onto your offspring. To a large degree we can control our health directly to our bodies and through our epigenome ...

HERE ARE NINE BASIC WAYS TO GET STARTED 1.

GOOD FATS - DHA

Good fats (Omega 3s) are essential to the developing brain and the adult brain. Essential fatty acids compose about 15% of the brain. Omega 3 fatty acids are crucial to the frontal cortex (associated with higher brain function) and the brains of infants. Deficiencies in DHA (the most abundant Omega 3 in the brain) result in decreased learning abilities for both children and adults. Deficiencies of Omega 3s are quite common in our country. Great food sources include: deep ocean-fish (tuna, herring, salmon, anchovy, mackerel and sardines), dark green leafy vegetables (organic), pasture raised eggs, walnuts, macadamia nuts, flax seeds and hemp seeds. DHA comes in capsule form (250 mg/capsule) and chewable form.

2.

POWERFUL PROTEINS Pea Powder and Algae

The building blocks of proteins are amino acids. Amino acids are used to make neurotransmitters, enzymes, muscle and other important parts of our body. Neurotransmitters allow the brain cells to talk to each other. Deficiencies or excesses of these tiny molecules can wreak havoc on our moods or thought functions. It has been effective in my practice to test the urine for peripheral neurotransmitters in order to assess what is going on in the brain. Treating imbalances with specific amino acids (20 total with 9 being essential in our diets because the body cannot make them), herbs, vitamins and minerals has made a great difference in people’s lives regarding anxiety, depression, ADD/ADHD and even mental disorders such as autism spectrum and schizophrenia. One easy dietary change for anyone to make is eliminating sugar and simple carbs for breakfast and adding at least 25 grams of protein and complex carbs. Love &

Peas with non-dairy milks (coconut, flax, almond or hemp) and frozen berries is a great way to add highly digestible protein to your day. Two scoops contain 20 grams of protein from yellow and green peas with gluten-free grains, beans, vegetables and fruit. With a fruit sweetened and vanilla taste, this shake is great for the whole family! Super Algae is also a great way to ingest more amino acids. Each capsule contains three sources of algae: spirulina (fresh water blue-green algae), Klamath Lake blue-green algae and chlorella (a single-cell green algae). Taken daily with breakfast, lunch and mid-afternoon, this combination of amino acids can balance blood sugar levels, increase energy, stabilize mood and promote better brain function.

3.

FOOD ELIMINATIONS

Various foods can react differently in every person, but the top 9 current foods that can cause inflammation in the brain are: sugar, wheat (gluten), dairy, corn, soy, peanuts, eggs, nightshades (onions, garlic, peppers, tomatoes and eggplant), alcohol (especially the sulfites) and food chemicals (dyes, sweeteners, fillers, etc). Eliminate one or more of these foods from your diet for 21 days, assess how you feel, reintroduce one food at a time and reassess your symptoms, mood, energy and sleep.

4.

DETOXIFICATION CleanStart

Please call or come visit us at Nature’s Remedy for a free explanation of our 28Day CleanStart cellular and intestinal cleansing program including supplements, dietary chart and daily plan. All the work is done for you!

5.

PURE WATER

Water is the most abundant molecule in our bodies! The same goes for our brains … 70%. Dehydration can lead to brain fatigue, headaches of many types and altered shortterm memory. As a general rule, one half of your body weight in ounces as a daily goal will heal many ailments.

6.

VITAMINS B Complex

B vitamins are especially needed to help the body make neurotransmitters, yet we lack insufficient intake of fruits, raw vegetables (cooking denatures these vitamins easily) and whole grains. White sugar, white flour, white rice and processed foods not only contain zero B vitamins but they also stress the body enough to rob us of these vitamins and other nutrients. Nutri-Calm is an excellent source for a B complex because it also contains schizandra fruit, choline, inositol, bee pollen, PABA, lemon bioflavonoids, valerian root extract, passionflower flowers extract and hops flowers extract. The combination of these plants helps the B vitamins to be more absorbable while also calming the brain and promoting more restful sleep.

7.

MINERALS Magnesium

Magnesium l-threonate easily crosses the blood brain barrier and is highly absorbable in the brain where it plays a vital role in nerve synapses. Mind Max combines this form of magnesium with gotu kola, bacopa leaf and ginkgo leaf for increased brain circulation and brain health.

8.

HERBS - DMAE

Focus Attention’s main ingredient is DMAE, which is a biodynamic nutrient used

Also added is slippery elm (aids nutrient absorption and is used as a soothing and cleansing herb for the digestive system), l-Glutamine (an amino acid that supports healthy brain activity and mental ability), lemon balm (soothes the nervous system), Grape seed extract (neutralize brain-damaging free radicals caused by toxins or over-stimulated brain metabolism) and Ginkgo biloba (supports brain and circulatory health).

9.

ESSENTIAL OILS

Rosemary, Tei fu, Peppermint, Lemon, Cinnamon, Clove and Eucalyptus are all great essential oils to use for improved brain function. Use these oils on your hands and breathe in as often as needed or use in an aromatherapy diffuser.

Beat the Heat ...

... and Have a Summer Vacation MADE IN THE SHADE!

By the time August rolls around, if the hot weather has you wishing for cooler days, then come over to our neck of the woods, where sparkling waters meet lush, green forests. Discover a splish-splashy good time while exploring on boat, kayak or canoe. Keep it cool by taking cover in the crevices of our Geology Trail or hiking on the many other trails within Cattaraugus County. We are affordable, fun, and close to Niagara Falls, The PA Wilds and Chautauqua Lake! For a FREE map of the area, call 1-800-331-0543 or visit EnchantedMountains.com.

ONOVILLE MARINA

Float your boat this summer! One of the best parts of summer is being out on the water, whether you’re swimming, jet skiing, fishing or just relaxing in the sun. Onoville Marina offers 91 miles of natural shoreline and is known for being the largest inland marina in New York State. Here you can rent a boat, “put in” and cruise away to a refreshingly good time. View the beautiful scenery as you drift or speed along. This place offers so much more with an ice cream shop right across the marina, great sit down dining just minutes away at the Horseshoe Inn or Nic-L-Inn, and camping! Launch sites are also available at Friends Boat Launch in the Quaker area ALLEGANY of Allegany State Park or at Lime Lake in Machias, a small but great place STATE PARK to take your boat. Excellent fishing can be enjoyed at Lime Lake; enjoy your day on the water, then head over to the Drive-In Theater located right down the road. The Drive-In offers movies every night of the week!

Prefer a smaller sized boat such as a kayak or canoe? We’ve got options for those too. Try Allegany State Park with either of their lakes - Quaker Lake or Red House Lake. For a challenge, try rowing end to end in Quaker. Don’t own a kayak but want to get out there? Rent one or the other at the Red House Lake; they also have stand-up paddle boards, the latest sensation. Case Lake or Harwood Lake are perfect for the person seeking calmer waters or for fishermen. Both have hand launches for your canoe or kayak.

No sea legs or just a land lover? Cool down under the cover of treetop canopies in any of our 18 state forests. Follow the Finger Lakes Trail or the North Country Trail. Although these trails continue on past our county, the parts within Cattaraugus County are breathtaking. We have rugged climbs, easy breezy trails, paved trails and multiple use trails. The Pat McGee Trail is a 12-mile trail that remains fairly consistent throughout and offers scenic places to rest like under an old railroad bridge. The Allegheny River Valley Trail is a nature filled 5.6-mile loop along the Allegheny River. For more hike ideas go to EnchantedMountains.com/activity/hiking. Still haven’t found the perfect way to keep cool and comfortable? How about hiding in a chilly crevice of a three-story tall quartz conglomerate? In other words, take a trip to Rock City Park, Little Rock City, or Thunder Rocks. Meander through the pathways created by the huge rocks on your own self-guided tour, stopping where you please. Relax in the shadows created by these huge rocks or find your adventurous side as you crawl into caves that are as brisk as a day in April. Rock City Park in Olean takes you back to days when nature and a picnic lunch were all you needed to make your day complete. Cost is just $5 and you can follow the paved mile-long path or discover your own way to view these gigantic wonders. Little Rock City in Little Valley is completely rustic. There is no commercialization here other than a sign and some lean-tos! Need help getting there? Call us at 1-800-331-0543. Thunder PAT McGEE Rocks in Allegany State Park is a little bit smaller, TRAIL but is in our beautiful State Park that offers many more activities for a full day or full week fun! So beat the heat during the month of August by coming over to the Enchanted Mountains of Western New York. Where do you want to play?

BOUNTY ON THE MOUNTAIN • OH MY STARS! • FOLK DANCE PFEIFFER NATURE CENTER, PORTVILLE, NEW YORK By Mark Flanagan

In Walden, Henry David Thoreau ordered his readers to “Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influence of the earth.” It can be difficult to find this type of thinking today, at least outside of smelly Vermont communes or health food stores. Yet, as much as we might like to scoff at this almost youthful idealism, we cannot overlook it completely. We live in a cynical, fast-paced world nowadays, and it is incredibly easy to live only in that day-in-day-out grind and never spend an afternoon in nature. Who has so much time that they can waste it doing nothing in the woods? However, I would posit that this time is not wasted, but sacrificed out of necessity. Among rows of silent, stately trees, the inane problems of everyday life fall away, and you’ll find yourself able to focus on what is actually important to you, whatever that may be. This was the approach taken by Wendy Pfeiffer Lawrence, and has since been immortalized in the Pfeiffer Nature Center.

The Pfeiffer Nature Center is a non-profit organization located near Portville, NY and has been in operation for nearly twenty years. It encompasses an impressive 468 acres of wilderness, all open for public utility and enjoyment. Their mission is to “build a foundation of knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the intrinsic values and aesthetic qualities of the natural world while instilling a sense of responsibility and stewardship for the natural world within the global community.”

This August, the center has three major programs lined up that promise to be fun for everyone. On the 1st at 10am, the center will launch its Bounty on the Mountain program. This event will teach vital skills necessary in the pursuit of outdoor cooking. These skills range from “trowing” a steak, to cooking biscuits on a stick, and even learning how to cook an egg inside of an orange. As no stranger to outdoor cooking myself, I can promise you that the orange cooked eggs are worth it in and of themselves. Everyone loves brunch (especially when it’s served in a gorgeous spot), and for the low price of $7, there’s really no reason for you not to go. Be sure to reserve a spot soon, as prior notice is required to attend this lovely opportunity. On the 14th beginning at 8:30 pm, the Oh My Stars event will take place. This will allow participants to view the full beauty of the Perseid Meteor Shower. The center encourages you to bring lawn chairs and friends to this event, as it is open to the public and free of charge. In my oh-so-humble opinion, the Perseid shower is one of the coolest perennial shows around, and I would urge you to catch a view of it, especially if you never have before. Also, it’s worth noting that it will be a new moon cycle on the 14th, so this year’s shower should be brilliant without any of that pesky light pollution. The final event lined up this August is the Folk Dance on the 22nd at 2:15pm. Dancing is not everyone’s cup of tea ... (Lord knows it isn’t mine! I’m of Irish descent, so any rhythm I have exists below my ankles.) However, I have been assured that all dancing will be taught at this event, and no prior experience is needed. Hopefully, that assuages your reservations as much as it did mine. Besides, the event promises to be lots of fun with local musician Rachel Bell leading the pack. Dances include a Middle Eastern snake charmer, a Russian clapping dance, and a traditional American dance. This event is $7 and requires a reservation. So, grab some dancing friends and remember that you won’t feel as foolish if you’re in a group.

Pfeiffer Nature Center is located at 1974 Lillibridge Road, Portville, NY. To make reservations for these events, either go online at pfeiffernaturecenter.org or call the office at 716-933-0187.

DON’T MISS OUT ON THESE GREAT OPPORTUNITIES TO RECONNECT WITH NATURE.

Rockin’

Salamanca’s

R

ibfest By Spencer Timkey

Returning for its 4th year, the Salamanca Rockin’ Ribfest comes to Veterans Memorial Park for a weekend of music, food, cars, running and family fun. Listen to local bands throughout the weekend, run in the Gotta Kiss Cancer Goodbye 5K, get your face messy with award-winning BBQ and bring the kids for Sunday’s Family Life Network’s day of family-centric activities. If that isn’t enough, the Rockin’ Ribs n’ Rides Car Show displays some of the area’s coolest rides, while an arts & crafts show will allow you to check out works from local artists. The Rockin’ Ribfest is brought to you by the Seneca Salamanca Chamber of Commerce and is free to attend. The 3-day event starts on Friday, Aug. 14 at 4pm. ‘Goodbye Dawn’ will kick off the musical entertainment as they take center stage at 6pm. Well-known around the area for playing their unique brand of electronic pop, band member Alex Coustenis expressed his excitement to get back to this venue. “This is our 3rd year playing the Ribfest,” he said. “We have a blast every year. It’s a really good event. All of the kids that can’t come and listen to us (because we play in bars) can come. We’ve been adding a bunch of disco to our playlists, and people love dancing to it.” “We’ve seen a growing interest in BBQ, and figured it would be fun to have an event that’s focused on it,” said John Sheehan, Director of the Seneca Salamanca Chamber. “It brings a lot of people in, and this weekend is huge for the economic development of our area. We’ve coupled engaging entertainment for adults with family-friendly activities for people with kids, and that’s a recipe for success.” As for the BBQ, Coustenis was quick to sing its praise. “I think my entire family ate enough BBQ for the entire year.” The Seneca Salamanca Chamber brings in multiple award-winning BBQers, including My Happy Place and Sergeant Oinks BBQ. Sergeant Oinks, out of Tiffin, Ohio, boasts awards from around the country. The music continues on Saturday, when CCR tribute band Midnight Special plays from noon-2:30pm. Nostalgia galore! After Midnight Special is done, The Bob Hartle Band will perform from 3:30-5:30pm. Saturday night finishes very strong with 80s tribute band The Vapors from 7:30-9:30pm. Gotta Kiss Cancer Goodbye, a local organization founded by cancer battler Kathleen Hogan, will host its 5K run (walkers also encouraged!) on Saturday as part of this year’s Ribfest. (Registration at 8am, race starts at 9am). Kathleen, who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia in 2009, started the organization in an attempt to raise awareness, fund research and be a bastion of hope and strength for cancer fighters and survivors. The Winery of Ellicottville, which makes its own wine right at the business (on Monroe Street in downtown Ellicottville, NY), will offer free wine tasting both Friday and Saturday from noon-5pm. The Winery will also be selling some of its signature wines at the event, and many of them are a perfect complement to easy summer nights. “We wanted to bring in businesses that would drive people to explore all of the great things our area has to offer,” Sheehan said. “We’ll have a wheel that people can spin featuring a lot of these local businesses - Allegany State Park, the Seneca Allegany Casino, etc. - and if you land on said business, you’ll be given a coupon. Stimulating economic growth is one of our main priorities.” The car show, a perennial favorite, sees a lot of the very cool cars that are around the area. Registration begins at 9am, and there will be a ‘Best in Show’ award given out at 3pm. Sheehan stressed that all makes and models of vehicles are welcome to participate in the car show, so if you’ve got something good, bring it out! One of the main talking points Sheehan discussed was Sunday’s day of family-oriented activities, sponsored in part by the Family Life Network. With over 70 radio outlets across New York and Pennsylvania, the mission of Family Life Network is to engage with people through on-stage acts, music and radio personalities to bring people closer to God. Sunday will also feature lots of fun stuff for the kids - bounce houses, family games and local churches. “One of FLM’s premier DJs - DJ Randy Snavely - will be on stage on Sunday (from 12:30-1pm) delivering some inspirational messages, and he’s been on-air for the better part of 25 years,” Sheehan said. “This is one of the only events out of the entire year where it’s free to families and also alcohol-free. Sunday will also feature multiple other Christian-based bands and speakers.” For more information on this year’s Rockin’ Ribfest events in Salamanca, head over to www.salamancachamber.org or call 716-945-2034.

THE SUMMER LOCAL ~ AUGUST 2015 ... Page 13

OLEAN, NY August 19-23, 2015

By Pat Morgan There’s nothing quite like the sights and sounds of summer here in the Southern Tier. A gentle breeze through the trees, the occasional songbird calling out, and of course the sound of people simply enjoying the warm days. For some however, the sights and sounds of summer are a bit more intense - insert the unmistakable idle and roar of a motorcycle. If that’s more your speed, you’re in for a treat of an event coming to Olean, NY Aug. 19-23, as the annual ‘Rally in the Valley’ makes its triumphant return. Having raised over $235,000 since its inception in 2003, this event is not to be missed, not only for the camaraderie, but the benefit it has for the local community. So, toss a leg over the saddle, and let’s get you up to speed on all the happenings going on throughout the week. Every great party needs a ‘pre-game’, which finds the event kicking off Wednesday the 19th in the Cutco/Ka-Bar parking lot where attendees will be treated to music, food, raffles and more from 5-7pm. Once you’ve primed your pump with that great kickstart, Thursday, the 20th finds Community Bank hosting their ‘Banking on a Good Time Street Dance’ held on Laurens Street from North Union Street to North First Street from 7-10pm. Activities include line dancing, games, the Rally Harley Davidson Raffle, and music by THE HOOTZ. Hungry? Sparky’s Pizza and Certo Brothers will have the party covered, with some of the best pizza and coldest drinks around. Friday finds us getting into the motorcycle events (what many of you have been waiting for!) as the annual ‘Kickstart to Rally’ and ‘Tough Enough to Wear Pink’ events are put on by the Olean Area Federal Credit Union. The Rally will officially rev its proverbial engine and begin with a motorcycle parade spanning from the Olean Area Federal Credit Union to North 12th to West State to Bradner Stadium. This all gets underway at 5:30pm, so if you’re not riding your trusty ‘hog’ in the event, be sure to get there early and line the streets in support of this great cause. Speaking of causes, the Rally is encouraging all participants to don pink garb in support of breast cancer survivors and loved ones. No

pink in your closet? You’re in luck - a specially designed pink rally shirt will be available for sale to anyone looking to show their support! Once in the stadium, spectators and participants will be treated to the free fall parachute show of ‘Free Fall Oz’, as well as a fireworks show and concert by the Barry Brothers, presented by Mike’s Hard Lemonade. Exhausted yet? Let’s hope not, because once again Certo Brothers will bring ‘Saturday Fun & Games’ to the table, essentially turning Bradner Stadium into a street festival full of games, entertainment, bands, food, vendors and more. This will run from 11am-10pm, so there’s plenty of time for even the busiest of schedules to find time to stop on in! Motorcycle judging will also kick off Saturday with 9 different categories to enter in. The best part - YOU, the general public will be the judges of who has the best of the best at the Rally! Of course all these great events need a soundtrack, so ‘Freddie n’ The Jets’ will play from noon-3pm, ‘Fat Brat’ from 3:30-6:30pm, and finally ‘Steel Reign’ will close out the day from 7-10pm. Typically Sunday should be a day of rest, but not for Rally in the Valley, as Dice Run Day is presented by Olean General Hospital. The action will begin at 11am; the run makes its way all over WNY as riders vie for over $2,000 in cash and prizes. The ever popular ’Screamin’ Lou’ will be delighting the crowd with their incredible music from 2-6pm. On top of the traditional dice run, Rick Bokman Buick GMC Cadillac is proud to present their 2nd Annual Poker Run at 11am as well. With all of these great activities in store, the choice is clear: make your way to Rally in the Valley Aug. 19-23 in Olean, NY. For complete details including a full schedule of events, registration information, accommodations and more, click on over to the Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce website at www.oleanny.com or give the chamber office a shout at 716-372-4433.

MONTGOMERY GENTRY Country Duo Rides Into Seneca Allegany Casino this August

A Conversation with Troy Gentry HULICK: You have a new album out titled “Folks Like Us.” Can you tell me

a little bit about it? GENTRY: It was released June 9 and it’s more great stuff from Montgomery Gentry. Eddie (Montgomery) and I took a lot of time song searching for this record and it covers the same theme as our past records - our family, our faith, our American pride and all the hard working Americans out there and partying on the weekends.

HULICK: You’ve had #1 hits and million selling albums, but I read you are

most grateful for your Grand Ole Opry membership induction in 2009. GENTRY: Yes, that’s a pretty cool honor to have bestowed upon you. The Grand Ole Opry is something I grew up on in our house and I know Eddie’s family did as well. So when we first came to town that was one of the things we set our sights on … it was on our bucket list of things we wanted to accomplish. That’s an elite group of people. They invite all artists to perform there, but not everybody gets invited to be a part of the membership. It was very flattering and an honor to be asked to be a part of that group.

HULICK: Do you remember where you were when you found out you were

.............................. FRIDAY | AUGUST 28, 2015 By Melanie Hulick Country music superstars Montgomery Gentry will be riding into Salamanca for one show only on Friday, Aug. 28 at 7pm at the Seneca Allegany Events Center. The country duo have been together making music for a decade and a half and are still rolling strong with sold out shows wherever they go. Their new album, “Folks Like Us,” which they released at the beginning of summer, is moving up the charts. The word “chemistry” is synonymous when talking about the Kentucky born singers that have accomplished what they set out to do almost 16 years ago. “It’s a chemistry that’s worked for years,” states Troy Gentry. “It doesn’t get old or sterile,” he adds. I had the pleasure of catching up with Gentry from his home in Nashville to talk about the new album and the mentor that took them under his wing when they started out - who gave them some good advice and ended up being a big part of helping the duo cross off a major event on their bucket list. Montgomery Gentry has stayed true to their sound and their choice of songs to record, keeping the working class American theme still going strong on radio stations across the country and foremost in the minds of their ever increasing fan base. “We’re seeing the fans that grew up listening to our music now coming to our shows with their kids, which gives us a two generation fan base that is really cool to see,” said Gentry. Having played in the Western New York area many times over the past 16 years, the singer does not recall ever performing at Seneca Allegany Casino but stated he has looked at the property online and is excited to get here and hang out with the some of the greatest fans in the world and showcase a few of their songs from the new album, as well as some of the fan favorites, “Hillbilly Shoes” and “Headlights”.

going to become a member? GENTRY: We were actually on stage. They have a tradition at the Opry of keeping the invitation such a secret that the artist does not know about the ask until they are asked. So the night we were performing, one of our mentors, Charlie Daniels, happened to be in town and he was the one that approached us and asked us to become members. Charlie has been a mentor to us and took us under his wing when we first came to Nashville. When we cut our first record, “Tattoos & Scars,” there was a song that we re-cut that Charlie did called “All Night Long” that we put on the record. We asked him if he would come into the studio and play the fiddle and be a part of the video for the song. He was very gracious to accept those invitations. He kind of took us under his wing and mentored us and gave us advice like … stay true to yourself, don’t change to be something you’re not. He spent a lot of time with us, having a lot of sit down talks. I always admired him, but that made a bigger impression on me that somebody of that stature would take two guys he didn’t know and spend that much time with us … and then to have him be the one to ask us to be a member of the Opry was that much cooler.

HULICK: That’s a great story. Have you and Eddie come to the realization

that you are going to be that mentor to an up and coming artist(s) that Charlie Daniels was to you? GENTRY: I hope that we can take on that role as a mentor. We have talked to a couple of acts in the past couple years that grew up listening to our music and covering some of our songs in the clubs. There is one artist that is a songwriter that hung out with us for a couple days and he ended up getting himself a record deal and he said he would have never thought to become an artist if it hadn’t been for hanging out with us. So we are starting to hear and see some of that with some of the younger acts that are coming up.

HULICK: That must be an awesome feeling. GENTRY: It makes me feel old! (laughs) HULICK: (laughs) I want to mention that you and Eddie are big in charity

works, and I don’t think that is brought up enough in the media these days and I think it’s important to bring up that side of an artist. As a matter of fact, in 2010 you won the ACM Humanitarian Award and I think you should be commended for the charity work you do. GENTRY: Well thank you. We’ve been given the opportunity to do something great with our talent and it would not be right if we didn’t take some responsibility to help others out in need when we can.

HULICK: Are you guys having as much fun or more out on the road these days?

GENTRY: Both Eddie and I still enjoy traveling … we’re road dogs. We love being on stage and performing live. As long as people continue to have us, we’ll continue to hit the road and get out there and play.

TRAIL CENTRAL

Make It An Allegheny-Kinzua Summer

The mountains of the Alleghenies in northwestern Pennsylvania are full of stories of ancient rivers, scenic beauty, and pioneer adventures in an untamed wilderness. Walk in the footsteps of these pioneers as you explore sites named “Kinzua” within the Allegheny National Forest of northwestern Pennsylvania.

The Kinzua Bridge State Park in Mt. Jewett, Pennsylvania is a free admission day-use park, and is home to the Kinzua Sky Walk.

THE LEGEND OF KINZUA Kinzua is a word from the Seneca Tribe of Native Americans, which translates as “fish on a spear,” or “land of many fishes.” Today the word Kinzua (pronounced “Kin-zoo”) is used in the name of many of our local attractions. Kinzua Gorge is located in the Allegheny Plateau near the village of Mt. Jewett, PA. The Allegheny Plateau commands attention. Its narrow valleys and steep ridges have their own mystique looming in the background, changing moods with the passing clouds. The character of the people of northwestern Pennsylvania has been shaped by these hills. Fortunes were made from its resources, but they didn’t come easily. As much as the hands of men have altered the land, it appears to remain unchanged. The bedrock beneath the Allegheny Plateau is Pottsville Formation sedimentary rocklimestone, siltstone, shale, and of more consequence anthracite and bituminous coal. This ancient seabed was pushed to an elevation of 2,200 feet by unimaginable tectonic forces. Over 300 million years, valleys and ravines were carved out of the rock by irrepressible flow of hundreds of rivers and streams. European settlers gave these places some colorful names like Thundershower, Kettle Creek, and Young Woman’s Run. Or they simply adopted the names the natives had given them, Susquehanna, Tionesta, Tunungwant and Kinzua. Kinzua Creek rises, tea-colored, near the village of Cyclone in McKean County and flows westward for 26 miles where it empties into the Allegheny (Kinzua) Reservoir. Over millennia it carved a deep valley, a rugged wilderness rich in wildlife and inhabited by few. If its terrain appears formidable today, one can only imagine its impact on the character of earlier inhabitants. The Kinzua Valley was formerly part of the homelands of the Seneca Nation, one of the six tribes of the powerful Iroquois Confederation. Before the sale of those lands at the second Treaty of Fort Stanwix in 1784, few Europeans had ventured into the remote valley. Yet less than 100 years after Chief Cornplanter and other Seneca leaders signed the treaty, the first Kinzua Viaduct, built of iron, spanned its precipitous gorge.

The Kinzua Sky Walk stretches out 610 feet at a height of over 310 feet. A partial glass overlook at the end of the Kinzua Sky Walk provides a 360 degree view of the Kinzua Gorge.

KINZUA BRIDGE STATE PARK Both Kinzua Gorge and Kinzua Creek can be viewed and hiked at the Kinzua Bridge State Park, 1721 Lindholm Road, Mt. Jewett, PA. A free admission day-use park, Kinzua Bridge State Park is open from dawn to dusk daily. It offers picnic tables, hiking trails, and the amazing Kinzua Sky Walk, built on the historic towers of the Kinzua Viaduct. For groups, a free tour may be scheduled by calling the park office at 814-965-2646. No food and beverages are available on-site, so please pack your picnic lunch or snacks. Picnic tables are located in forest-shaded areas where you can enjoy the view. The Kinzua Bridge Scenic Byway (Lindholm Road on your GPS unit) is the access road to the park. It is a state designated shared use byway for bicycles and motor vehicles. This two-lane byway winds through Pennsylvania State Game Lands and visitors have a very good chance of seeing wild turkey or white tailed deer. Construction is currently underway at the park for a new visitors center. Scheduled to be completed later this year, the Kinzua Bridge State Park Visitors Center will be open year round and provide historic and interpretive displays on the building of the original Kinzua Viaduct (Bridge) along with classroom and educational programming for school field trips and group tours. Kinzua Creek flows from north of the Kinzua Bridge State Park in Mt. Jewett. to the Allegheny (Kinzua) Reservoir in the Allegheny National Forest.

KINZUA SKY WALK The Kinzua Sky Walk extends 310 feet high, reaching out 624 feet into the Kinzua Gorge. It has an amazing overlook with a partial glass floor from which you will have a 360-degree view of the Kinzua Gorge. Beautiful year round, during fall foliage season - the last two weeks of September and the first two weeks of October - the scenery is breathtaking. The skywalk is built on the original six towers of the Kinzua Viaduct, commonly called the Kinzua Bridge, which was once the highest and longest railroad viaduct in the world until an F1 tornado in 2003 toppled 11 of its towers. Two rows of tracks, one for narrow gauge trains and a wider set of tracks for the heavier trains that used to haul coal and timber to the Great Lakes, allow visitors to enjoy the thrill of “Walking the Tracks Across the Sky.” The creek, which can be viewed from the Kinzua Skywalk, is appropriately named Kinzua Creek and is indeed a great trout fishing stream. Visitors can hike a trail down the side of the Kinzua Gorge at the Kinzua Bridge State Park to view the fallen towers and to fish the stream.

The lands around the Allegheny (Kinzua) Reservoir are full of stories of ancient rivers, scenic beauty and pioneer adventures.

KINZUA DAM Located along Rt. 59 in Pennsylvania between Smethport and Warren, just north of Kane along the Longhouse National Scenic Byway, is the Kinzua Dam. The Kinzua Dam holds back the waters within the 100 mile shoreline of the Allegheny (Kinzua) Reservoir. It is located within the Allegheny National Forest. Built in the 1960’s to provide flood control and power generation, the dam created the Allegheny (Kinzua) Reservoir, which some folks also call Kinzua Lake. The Kinzua Dam is one of the largest dams in the United States east of the Mississippi River.

ALLEGANY (KINZUA) RESERVOIR The waters of Kinzua Creek enter the southern tip of the Allegheny (Kinzua) Reservoir just north of the village of Kane, PA. The Allegheny Reservoir stretches into Pennsylvania and New York; it extends 25 miles to the north, nearly to Salamanca, NY, within the Allegheny Reservation of the Seneca Nation of New York. The reservoir is perfect for kayaking, sailing, fishing or motorized boating. When fishing the reservoir, a Pennsylvania fishing license is required for the southern portion (fish.state.pa.us/license), a New York license for parts of the northern reservoir (dec/ny.gov/permits), and a separate Seneca Nation Fishing License for their portion of the reservoir (senecanation.com). Although a little complicated for licensing, the 12,000 acre Allegheny Reservoir offers world-class fishing for walleye, bass, muskie, and catfish. Red Bridge Campground is located along Rt. 321 just north of where Kinzua Creek enters the reservoir; it is a favorite for those seeking to fish the “the land of big fishes.” Nearby is Paul’s Trading Post, 11124 Route 321, Kane, PA, where you can buy a fishing license and supplies, plus have a chance to speak to the locals who routinely fish the local streams and the reservoir. Kinzua Point is an observation and seasonal information center located along Rt. 59 before the dam. Just west of Kinzua Dam, along Rt. 321, is a birding overlook, a great place to watch for American Bald Eagles.

A very scenic drive, New York Rt. 280 and Pennsylvania Rt. 321, partially follows the northern shoreline of the Allegheny Reservoir before going deep into the forestlands of the Allegheny National Forest.

McKEAN COUNTY FAIR

WEEK-LONG CELEBRATION STAYS TRUE TO ITS ROOTS

By Mary Heyl This year marks the 110th year of the McKean County Fair, an area event that has stayed true to its agricultural roots, while also evolving to offer visitors the best in live entertainment. The fairgrounds, located at 7172 Route 46 in Smethport, PA, will be the hub of education, edible delights, and excitement Aug. 15-22. For an authentic experience of all that makes this county unique, including agriculture, wildlife, and the vast Allegheny National Forest, plan to visit the McKean County Fair this month! Like many county fairs, the McKean County Fair began in 1903 as a place for local farmers and vendors to exhibit and sell their livestock, homegrown fruits and vegetables, and homemade treats. The fair continues this tradition by devoting the first weekend of the fair, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 15-16 to all things agricultural. “AG Weekend,” which is free to attend, features the Tractor Parade on Saturday morning, as well as the Southern Tier Mini Tractor Pullers in the afternoon. Sunday morning continues with tractor games, leading up to the Opening Ceremonies at 6pm. Visitors should know that no rides will be in operation during this weekend, as the focus is on agricultural events. Throughout the week of the fair, visitors can explore the different agricultural barns. 4-H students will be exhibiting beef, sheep, swine, and goats in the Larry Ackley Complex. Rabbits, chickens, and other fowl are housed in the Danny Baker Building. At the 4-H Center, fair-goers can support area 4-H students who take turns throughout the week selling milkshakes, hot dogs, and daily specials. Interested in an exciting, live agricultural experience? Stop by the dairy barn, where you can learn how to milk a cow and possibly see the birth of a new calf! The Allegheny National Forest, which is located primarily in McKean County, is of particular importance to the fair, as its natural resources and wildlife are part of what makes this area unique. The Pennsylvania WoodMobile is a fascinating exhibit that teaches visitors how Pennsylvania’s forests have shaped the state’s history and industry. This 34foot air-conditioned trailer, pulled by a truck, highlights the state’s different hardwood species, the timber industry, and various threats to the forests such as certain insect and plant species. Bear Hill Horse Logging owner, Steve Perrine, will be at the fair all week talking about the importance of logging to the growth of forests, and demonstrating how to log with horses on Friday and Saturday. Indeed, the Allegheny National Forest is a beautiful place, but it has its natural predators. Among those are Pennsylvania’s Timber Rattlesnakes, which are poisonous; Bob and Lisa Zumstein, owners of Tandem Training and Tracking will be sharing information on safety precautions and preservation of this snake species from Thursday through Saturday. Visitors can also meet several birds of prey that will be on display, courtesy of Eagle Dream Rehabilitation, Thursday through Saturday. Eagle Dream rescues, treats, rehabilitates, and returns to the wild these important endangered species, many of which are native to the Allegheny National Forest. In addition to this range of educational exhibits, the McKean County Fair offers fun entertainment all week long! According to Denise Hale, who has been a part of the fair

for many years and is superintendent of Group Exhibits, “Patrons look forward to many things – fair food, looking at the animals and riding the rides!” This year, Bates Brothers Amusements will again be providing the midway rides, which are included with every gate admission. Hale is excited to announce that this year’s fair will include daily performances by Dan Mink, the Rhinestone Roper. Dan, Lucky Joe, and Handsome Jack have been performing for several years at state and county fairs across the United States; their show features expert trick roping, bull whip cracking, six gun spinning, and even “Wheel of Death Knife Throwing”! Team Rock, national champion Martial Arts Breaking Experts, will be performing daily by impressing audiences with their athletic, even acrobatic boardbreaking demonstrations. Fair-goers should keep in mind that daily grounds entertainment and midway rides will be taking place Monday through Saturday, and will not be a part of the first weekend of the fair (AG Weekend). Hale emphasizes that gate admission also includes the evening entertainment throughout most of the week. Monday night features a Johnny Cash and June Carter Tribute Band, while Tuesday night’s performance features area singer/songwriter Katie Rubino. At 8pm on Wednesday, the Painted Pony Championship Rodeo - the largest professional rodeo company in New York - will be amazing audiences with these prize-winning “animal athletes.” At 8pm Tuesday, Full Pull Productions, Inc. will host the Truck and Tractor Pull. For just $6, visitors can witness this thrilling exhibition of power that is being featured for the first time in several years at the McKean County Fair. Fans of extreme sports will be interested in the motocross event, which also has a $6 grandstand fee, on Friday night at 7:30pm. The U.S. FMX National Championship Series will bring its top riders to the fair; these impressive athletes are among the few in the country who perform stunts that launch their motorcycles more than 70 feet through the air! General admission to the fair is $8 and can be purchased at the gate or in advance. Hale says tickets are available now throughout the county, at Buchanan’s Pharmacy locations, the Bradford Era office, Costa’s Supermarkets, and most area banks. On Wednesday, all veterans and active duty personnel, with proof of military service, will be admitted free onto the grounds all day. On Thursday, Senior Citizens Day, seniors 62 and older will also be admitted free. Saturday, Aug. 22 is Fire Prevention Day, when local fire personnel with proper identification can visit the fair for free. In reflecting on the McKean County Fair and what makes it a special event every year, Hale cites the people who make this event possible and a strong sense of community. “[It’s the] friendly people,” explains Hale, “and we provide golf cart transportation for our elderly and disabled patrons.” Indeed, the McKean County Fair is the place where every member of the family can enjoy a hands-on experience of what makes McKean County unique. For more information on the fair, visit www.mckeancountyfair.net or call the fair office at 814-887-5361.

THE POWER OF A TOURNEY

A Community Honors the Selfless Efforts of One Lions Club Member Over $100,000 Raised to Date for the Randolph Lions Club Thanks to the Larry Sullivan Memorial Golf Tournament at Cardinal Hills

By Spencer Timkey Selfless, compassionate, difference maker. You know the person that embodies these traits, as every community has one (or more). A man that worked tirelessly to help make the lives of the people around him better, Larry Sullivan died in 2002. But the Randolph community refuses to allow such an accomplished life go forgotten. On Wednesday, Sept. 9, the Larry Sullivan Memorial Golf Tournament will honor his memory. A sterling testament to the life of service Sullivan led: for many years, he was nicknamed ‘Lion Larry,’ in regards to his dedication to the Lions Club of Randolph. The Lions Club, an international organization that dedicates itself to assisting the blind and hard of sight, has chapters in over 200 countries. Howie Van Rensselaer, a Lions Club member and friend of Sullivan, said it was an easy decision to get a memorial going after Sullivan died. “Larry was a lifetime Randolph guy,” he said. “He had a huge impact on the community and his church (Randolph’s Grace Episcopal). He worked for me (at Van Rensselaer & Son Funeral Home) for over 15 years. He was the heartbeat of the Lions Club and really made it what it is today. He was a great person.” The tournament, now in its 12th year, has raised over $100,000 to date for the Lions Club, scholarships and various community service endeavors. “We’ve received unbelievable support from the community since the tournament’s inception,” Van Rensselaer said. “Restaurants and bars have gotten involved, and Eric (Brown) at Cardinal Hills, where we host the tournament, has been over-the-top generous.” (Writer’s note: I played at Cardinal Hills for the first time in about 10 years for the Gotta Kiss Cancer Goodbye tournament in July. An awesome course that’s fun to play - check it out!)

Van Rensselaer started the tournament with Sullivan’s son, Terry. He continues to work with a committee each year to ensure the tournament goes off without a hitch. It’s much more difficult to host and organize a golf tournament than one might expect, so it’s a testament to both the committee’s efforts and Sullivan’s memory that it hauls in over 100 golfers a year. “We knew we wanted to have the tournament in the fall,” Van Rensselaer said. “And we know it’s difficult for people to make golf work on a Wednesday, especially throughout the fall. So it really means a lot to us that so many people participate.” Raising that much money is no easy feat. But Van Rensselaer told me that it’s been easy with how charitable local businesses have been. “A couple of bars have given us packages for 20 people to come eat, drink and watch the Bills games,” he said. “So those have been big. We’ve always had a title sponsor. Not to mention, the people who support the cause.” Each year, the money from the tournament goes into the Lions Club bank account and is distributed accordingly. Since the Lions Club’s primary focus is sight, they’ve gotten eyeglasses for kids and senior citizens. But it doesn’t stop there - they’ve given out hearing aids, gas cards to those who need to travel for long-term medical care, and assistance for those in the community who need help. The Lions Club also gives out three scholarships to the tune of $1,000 each year - two from the Club, and one called the Larry Sullivan Memorial Scholarship. “It’s a great event, and it’s a great way to honor Larry’s memory,” Van Rensselaer said. “If you’d like to participate or donate, please give us a call at the Club or Cardinal Hills. We’re really excited about this year.” The Lions Club of Randolph can be reached at 716-358-4210. Cardinal Hills Golf Course is located at 78 Conewango Road, Randolph, NY 14772, phone 716-358-5409. FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME By Spencer Timkey

In our wintertime publication (Ellicottville Snowed-In) we developed a series called the ‘Young Gun Spotlight’ in which we talked to local up-and-coming shredders to give you some background on who they are. We decided to do the same for The Summer Local, substituting skiing/snowboarding with golf. Golf is a sport where it doesn’t matter if your school is Class-D or AA … the competition rests in the 6 inches between your eyes. This month, we went head-to-head with Randolph, NY’s Nolan Ditcher and Ridgway, PA’s Josh Roselli.

NOLAN DITCHER

HOME COURSE: CARDINAL HILLS, RANDOLPH, NY

SPENCER: Thanks for taking the time to talk, Nolan. What grade are you in / what school? NOLAN: Yeah thanks for calling! I’ll be going into my senior year at Randolph. SPENCER: Tell me a little bit about yourself. NOLAN: I grew up in Randolph. I’m a decently athletic kid - I used to play baseball and hockey until I was about 13 - then it was all golf. I play a ton of golf in the summer, hit the weight room in the winter and basically wait for spring. As a student, I’m at the top of my class in Randolph. SPENCER: I’ve heard you’re a pretty solid golfer. NOLAN: I’m ok (laughs). For school, I tied 4th in the State Championship, tied 4th in the NY State Junior Championship in May (they played it in Cooperstown) and I’m the frontrunner for the WNY Junior PGA Tour Player of the Year Award. The PennYork Tournament I’ve done really well. I placed 1st at Elkdale with a 66 and won at Wellsville Country Club with a -1 70. And at the beginning of July, I qualified for the NY State Amateur Championship, which starts at the beginning of August.

JOSH ROSELLI

HOME COURSE: LAUREL MILL, RIDGWAY, PA

SPENCER: Let’s start by getting a little info on yourself. JOSH: No problem! My name is Josh Rosselli, I’m 18, and just finished my senior year at Ridgway High School.

SPENCER: That’s awesome. Lots of good things ahead. Have you decided on a school? JOSH: I have! St. Bonaventure University. SPENCER: Excellent choice. I’m a Bona grad myself. So you’ll be playing there? JOSH: Yeah. I had my sights set on playing golf at a Division-1 school, and when I went to St. Bona’s campus, I fell in love with it. I know a bunch of kids from the area that play there, so it made the choice a bit easier for me. I’ll be majoring in Biology. SPENCER: Awesome. How long have you been playing golf for? JOSH: I started playing when I was around 9. I have a love for basketball, but picked up the clubs and really found a passion for it. (Nolan is also pictured on the cover.)

SPENCER: Wow! Quite the accomplishments. How often do you play? NOLAN: I try to play every day, but that doesn’t always happen. I usually end up playing 4 to 5 days a week. Other days I’m at the course, practicing putting/chipping or hitting balls at the range. It’s an every day thing. SPENCER: What’s your favorite thing about the sport? NOLAN: It’s so different than other sports. It’s all you - no teammates to fall back on. You are your own biggest enemy. You’ve got to keep it together in your head, keep your game together. One of the nice things, and this will sound cliche, but the whole integrity of the game thing. You follow the rules yourself. SPENCER: Who do you idolize? Who’s your favorite golfer? NOLAN: Ever since I was little, I’ve been a big Tiger fan. Definitely a childhood hero. SPENCER: When did you start playing? NOLAN: My dad introduced me to the game when I was 2 or 3. We’d go to the course, go out in the cart, he’d hit a drive, and I’d play the rest of the hole with him. SPENCER: I know your dad is a pretty good stick. NOLAN: Yeah, he’s really good. I play with him often. He’s our Club Champion last year at Cardinal Hills. At one point he was a 2 or a 3 handicap. But I started beating him consistently a couple of years ago (haha). He was also a good football player, played in the NY State Amateur Championship in 2000 and has been Club Champ 5 or 6 times now. SPENCER: Awesome. What kind of clubs do you use? NOLAN: My first junior set was Ping, and my regular set is Nike. I really like them. I’ve tried others, but I always come back to Nike. SPENCER: Do you want to play in college? NOLAN: Yeah, I do. I’ve been talking to a couple of D1 places up here, but I’d prefer to be down south where I can play all year. There are a couple of coaches in the Carolinas that I’ve talked to. Hopefully in the next couple of months I’ll have a better idea. SPENCER: What’s your favorite course to play in the area? NOLAN: Probably Crag Burn (in East Aurora) - beautiful course. The links at Ivy Ridge are really interesting - super tough but tons of character. Not your everyday tree line/tight fairways. I’ve played at Diamond Hawk (by the airport) and that’s pretty tough - the Section 6 Tournament was there to qualify for States. SPENCER: I played Diamond Hawk a couple of weeks ago and it chewed me up. The 30mph winds didn’t help (laughs.) How about your favorite Major? NOLAN: The Masters. Hands down. The only one that’s contested at the same course year after year. If you ask any avid golfer as to what course they wish they could play, I bet most of them would say Augusta. Stunning place. It always looks so perfect.

SPENCER: Does anyone in your family play? JOSH: They don’t, so it’s kind of weird that I’ll be playing it in college (laughs). But growing up playing ball, I blew both of my knees out. After surgery, I figured my chances of playing Division-II or III basketball might not seem as bright as originally anticipated. So playing golf is awesome because I’m good at it and there’s really no chance of me tearing any more ACLs. SPENCER: How about some golf accomplishments? JOSH: Well, our team won Districts in 2013 and 2014, and I was District champion in 2014, which was cool. We won AML (our league) all four years I played. There have been some small tournament wins. I took 2nd in match play in the Penn York, and placed top-8 in Bartlett’s Men’s Amateur. SPENCER: Favorite course to play in the area? JOSH: I’d probably have to say Tom’s Run (at Chestnut Ridge) in Blairsville. It’s where we have our Regionals at. It’s a super fun course to play, long and open. SPENCER: How about the hardest course you’ve played? JOSH: Probably out of state. There are a couple of spots in Virginia that I play at when I go see my aunts and uncles down there. One in particular, Totter Ridge in Greensburg. SPENCER: If you could be one pro golfer, who would it be? JOSH: Probably Jordan Spieth. Doing what he’s doing right now, how young he is and to be playing so well. He’s at a super fun age (Spieth is just 21 with two Majors under his belt) and on top - that’s got to make it even better. SPENCER: What kind of clubs do you use? JOSH: All Titleist. It was just recently a thing. I used to play different clubs, but then I got a Titleist driver and putter, and saved money to pick up the rest of the set. I really love them. SPENCER: What are some pre-round rituals that you have? Are you superstitious? JOSH: I stay away from superstition, as to not let anything get into my head. When I think too much, I play bad, so an open mind is key. Once it becomes a job, it’s not fun anymore. (Writer’s note: the kid is 18 and he’s got it figured out.) SPENCER: Who’s your favorite band or musician? JOSH: Well, my dad is in a band, and he’s got the Rolling Stones on a lot. So I guess a lot of rock n’ roll stuff like that. SPENCER: Who do you idolize, and what drives you (no pun intended) to be a better golfer? JOSH: I don’t like being beaten. So when I lose, it motivates me. I took it upon myself to become a better golfer, and that’s taken a lot of hard work and practice. SPENCER: Awesome. Favorite basketball team? JOSH: I’d have to say the Syracuse Orange. SPENCER: You better switch allegiances quick. The Bonnies play the Orange this year! JOSH: Oh, I will. Really looking forward to this next stage in my life.

Enjoy Randolph

By Pat Morgan Summer is in full swing (perhaps, literally ‘fore’ some of you) and we here at The Summer Local hope you’re getting out there and making the most of the plethora of activities that this beautiful area boasts. While many of you may be fully aware of all that Cattaraugus and McKean Counties have to offer, we want to pinpoint some exciting happenings down in McKean County, home of Kane Country Club – more specifically the recent addition of Kelly’s Restaurant. Located on Route 6 in Kane, PA (better known as the ‘Black Cherry Capitol of the World’), Kane Country Club has become quite the popular destination for golf enthusiasts. We were fortunate to catch up with Head Golf Professional John Rook, as well as Kelly Martin (owner of Kelly’s Restaurant) to find out what’s new and what awaits your next visit to KCC. Kelly’s Restaurant had its initial start in downtown Bradford, where it had been located for a number of years. Owned and operated by Martin and her family, Kelly’s was known for their vast array of menu items, which she has since transferred to Kane Country Club. The menu consists of everything from traditional appetizer items, right on up to surf ‘n turf. Kelly’s dream, however, had always been to operate a restaurant on a golf course, and this past April, that dream became reality, as the restaurant moved into their current home at KCC. Citing it as a “good business decision,” Martin and her incredible staff of dedicated employees hit the ground running, unveiling a new menu with additions like a soup & salad bar, as well as ’theme’ evenings including all-you-can-eat crab legs on Tuesday nights. On top of the new culinary treats, several events are in the works, such as comedy nights and wine tasting events. Along with the impressive new culinary addition to KCC, the club has also continued to improve the course as well as the generously stocked golf shop. The par 70, 6,005-yard course is “playing better than ever this summer,” according to Golf Pro John Rook. Their greens and fairways are meticulously manicured, and the on-site golf shop is well stocked with the brands one would expect from a top-notch shop – inside you’ll find Titleist, Footjoy, Nike, Callaway, and the increasingly popular Under Armour apparel line (Jordan Spieth ring a bell, anyone?) To schedule your next tee time at Kane Country Club, or to inquire about banquet and dining services at Kelly’s Restaurant, call the course at 814-837-9491 or click on over to www.kanecountryclub.com.
