THE COUNCIL The Cattaraugus County Arts Council has been improving the quality of life in the Southern Tier through the promotion of culture and the arts for 17 years. The not-forprofit organization offers classes for all ages, support for artists, and administers grants from various sources. Its goal is to make this beautiful region a more stimulating and interesting place to live, work, and raise families. “Arts are vital to a vibrant community,” commented Mikel Wintermantel. “There is a need to keep arts and crafts alive in the minds of our youth, to inspire people of all ages, and to provide a place where anyone can go to exercise their creative minds.” Wintermantel shared that his entire family uses the arts council’s services - his partner practices ceramics (which she learned from arts council pottery teacher Peter Jones), and his daughter volunteers with the organization to help younger children during workshops. “I support the CCAC wholeheartedly,” he continued. “I feel that an organization that services the arts as thoroughly and abundantly as the arts council deserves everyone’s support.” More information about the Cattaraugus County Arts Council can be found at the website listed above. Guests are invited to stop by the CCAC gallery at 100 West Main Street in Allegany, NY weekdays between 9am and 4pm. Membership and business sponsorship information, as well as award nomination forms for the Celebration of the Arts event are available there. While you’re there, be sure to sign up for CCAC’s event newsletters, and stay in the loop with the region’s arts and culture scene.

An art raffle will take place throughout the night to give away five original works of art with a total value of over $10,000. The generous donors include local artists Jason Green, Barbara Fox, Mikel Wintermantel, and Thomas Annear.
“The event raises critical funds for CCAC,” according to the arts council’s Executive Director, Tina Hasting. “I encourage all that are interested in supporting the arts and culture scene to purchase tickets, even if you can’t attend the event.”

Do Your Body (and your mind) a Favor . . .
Reap the Physical and Mental Health Benefits of Hatha Yoga and Barre ... Hey Guys! It’s Not Just for Women! By Spencer Timkey
There’s just something about spring that makes you feel rejuvenated, right? Fresh air, sunshine, being able to walk around without having your face look like a White Walker from Game of Thrones - all of these equate to a spry reawakening. Don’t think that running, hiking, mountain biking or general outdoor activity is the only thing to do around Ellicottville. Think outside the box and try some yoga and / or barre, courtesy of Laura Solly and Melissa Whaley, respectively. Each offers a class that will require you to try something different … kind of goes in line with that springtime feeling, right? For Solly, teaching yoga was never originally the plan. Her father, an avid practicer of the exercise / lifestyle trend, got her into it. She started her training in 2008, and after over 200 hours of training over the course of a year, she became a certified instructor. “I started teaching Hatha yoga at Edelweiss (Lodge), and from there continued at the Ellicottville Memorial Library,” Solly said. “At first I had one class in the morning and afternoon, then added another ... it kept growing to a point where I decided to move it to the space in the back of Daff.” The Daff studio, which overlooks a courtyard (facing the 1887 Building) is fenced in and adds to the ambience. “It’s a really good spot. The studio is all contained within that space. There’s high ceilings, brick, mirrors … it’s a really great vibe.” Whaley’s route to teaching barre is a little different than Solly’s. Working in finance and an avid barre participant herself, she took classes while she was working in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas and San Francisco. “When I moved back full time, I realized that there just weren’t that many barre studios around, so I decided to go get my certification to teach. I started teaching in Laura’s studio, then opened another one in Hamburg this April.” Whaley and Solly met during a Pilates class almost five years ago. They became fast friends with a mutual support for one another, and emphasize that the benefits of doing yoga / barre are off the charts. Let’s break it down:
LAURA SOLLY’S HATHA YOGA Hatha Yoga is the most widely practiced form of yoga in America. It is the branch of yoga which concentrates on physical health and mental well-being. Hatha yoga uses body postures, breathing techniques, and mediation with the goal of bringing about a sound, healthy body and a clear, peaceful mind. There are nearly 200 hatha yoga postures, with
hundreds of variations, which work to make the spine supple and to promote circulation in all the organs, glands, and tissues. Hatha yoga postures also stretch and align the body, promoting balance and flexibility. Says Solly, on yoga: “In my class you’ll experience relaxation, deep stretching, full body rejuvenation, physical, mental and emotional release. Yoga calms the nervous system and helps you sleep better, reduces stress and is great for anxiety management.”
ELLICOTTVILLE BARRE A barre workout combines the use of a barre (a stationary handrail widely used in ballet training) and various props to maximize your results with a consistent focus on posture and form. With committed practice, barre work results in elongated, lean muscles. It is easy on the joints and is a fun, efficient workout with a high calorie burn (400-600 per class!) Says Whaley, on what to expect in her barre class: “Class begins with a warm-up, arms, then a barre section intended to raise the heart rate and prepare the body for isolated muscle work. From here, the class is divided into short, powerful segments working the glutes and legs to fatigue, then stretching to lengthen. The class ends with ab work and final stretching. No dance experience is required.” Listen, I’m a dude. I understand the … hesitation that most men feel about these two lifestyles and exercise routines. But if you’re a: skier, snowboarder, golfer, runner, swimmer, cyclist, outdoor enthusiast, basketball / football / hockey / soccer / baseball player, then chances are good that these classes will be good for you. “The biggest thing with ‘broga’ - as some call it - is that men are too afraid to be around women that are flexy, or put themselves in that situation,” Solly said. “But it’s great for athletes who are tight, because stretching keeps you loose and prevents injury.” Max space in the studio is 14 people. Solly said one of the biggest draws is that with a centralized location (in town) it makes it much more accessible for people to get to. Solly offers yoga on Mondays / Wednesdays at 6pm and Thursdays / Saturdays at 8:30am. She encourages you to call and book your spot, but walk-ins are welcome (space permitting). Yoga sessions run $15 each or $72 for a 6-punch pass (good for three months from time of purchase.) Whaley offers barre Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6pm and Wednesday mornings at 6am. Barre classes run $10 per class (or purchase a package of 10 classes for $90.) Bare feet or sticky socks are best for barre … ToeSoxx are available for sale at Daff. “Yoga and barre complement one another well, and a lot of barre students find benefits from yoga and vice versa,” Whaley said. GET OUTSIDE: Ellicottville Offers So Many Great Gems to Help You Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle By Spencer Timkey
EAT GOOD, FEEL GOOD, RIDE GOOD
ADVENTURE PARK READY TO OPEN
One of the most underrated activities in the Ellicottville area are the expansive roads and trails for you to ride your bike on. Whether you’re channeling your inner Tour de France competitiveness on the roads or getting muddy on-hill, crushing the mountain biking trails, there are hundreds of miles for you to explore. Holiday Valley’s ‘Cycling Weekend’ and rides/races on the mountain biking trails will get you fit for summer while giving you a fresh perspective on the lesser-known spots in the area.
Unlike anything you’ve ever seen before, Holiday Valley’s Sky High Adventure Park transcends the concept of an adult playground. Nestled in the trees at the Tannenbaum Lodge, Sky High is a combination of an aerial ropes course, mountain coaster and tree climbing. Reminiscent of the Ewok Village from Star Wars, Adventure Park gets you outside, active and fuels fun for the entire family.
Dennis Baldwin, Ellicottville’s mountain bike guru, also runs Ellicottville Bike & Bean one of the most fun storefront combos around. Not only an architect of delicious, organic burritos (writer’s note: they’re really good) Baldwin also spearheads the local MTB scene. “More and more people are discovering the riding paradise that is Ellicottville,” he said. “We have 30+ miles right here in our backyard with some smaller, 12-mile singletrack areas nearby. The Western New York Mountain Bike Association (WNYBA) has plans for 15 miles of single track in Allegany State Park. Ellicottville riding has got some press in the last 5-6 years as well as labeled by IMBA as an epic ride destination.” Maintaining the integrity of the trails relies on community effort, and Baldwin, in conjunction with WNYMBA, is constantly organizing trail work days to keep the trails cleaned up and fun to ride. One of the most important things people overlook, he said, is not only keeping your body up to the task of a day’s worth of riding - but keeping your equipment tuned up as well. “Basic maintenance and proper tire inflation goes a long way. Get your bike in for service and ask what you should be taking on the trail to get you back out in case you have a mechanical issue,” he said. “Proper nutrition is always underrated, and eating the right food and drinking plenty of water is HUGE when you’re going to spend the day in the woods.” Speaking of proper nutrition, Baldwin uese fresh, organic ingredients in their burritos. This isn’t a guilty pleasure like Mighty Taco; Bike & Bean’s burritos leave you feeling full without that gross, processed-food feeling. “We continue to dial in the perfection at the shop,” he said. “We’ve added more staff, which will give me more time on the bike end without sacrificing quality in the burrito shop. You might notice a few more menu items when you stand in line at the burrito bar, and we’re also working on a new small “builder type” bike line which is pretty exciting.” Holiday Valley’s Cycling Weekend celebrates those Level-2 and Level-3 riders who love pushing the limit and pedaling 30+ miles per day. Now in its 2nd year, Cycling Weekend is scheduled for June 5-7. Riding with people who know the best routes is always better, and clinics/relationship building adds to the flavor of the weekend. If you’ve never ridden road around here, this is the perfect opportunity to see it in a new light. Day 1 gives you a 20-mile warm-up ride, with a gathering at The Inn afterwards to see displays by local bike shops and beer tasting. On Day 2, the real fun starts. A casual educational clinic preempts a 40-mile ride, then lunch on the scenic Overlook Terrace. Day 3 sees you huff 80-miles through Amish country, with snacks delivered along the way. “This town and our area really need a recreational trail to go along with our epic mountain bike / road bike mecca,” Baldwin said. “Along with supporting your local mountain bike club, also be sure to support the proposed EVGV (Ellicottville-Great Valley) Trail. Ellicottville is a progressive town and should have something to offer the people that want to get outside and walk, run, ride or whatever - but do not want to be on singletrack or the side of a highway. Let’s get this Ellicottville-Great Valley recreation trail moving!” For more information on mountain biking trails / advice and the new EVGV Trail, stop by and see Dennis at Bike & Bean. For more information on Holiday Valley’s Cycling Weekend (including lodging packages) head to www.holidayvalley.com or call 716-699-2345.
Entering its 5th year, the Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster and Aerial Park have catapulted Holiday Valley’s summer business, bringing in thousands of climbers and riders. The addition of the 3-D Climbing Forest (more on this later) only further enhances the guest experience. Committing yourself to a session at Adventure Park will require you to step outside of your comfort zone … and that’s perfectly ok. A couple months ago, Sky High Adventure Park leaders Brian Halloran and Sam Huffman took off to the ACCT (Association for Challenge Course Technology) Conference in California to learn about some new and exciting things the climbing industry is doing. They came back with plenty of insight to share with Holiday Valley leaders. “It was pretty wild to see how many different variations of these parks there can be,” Huffman said. “There were people from all over the world there, each one bringing a different perspective to how these parks can be run.” If you’ve never been to Sky High before, let’s give you a quick crash course: After getting fitted with a harness at the harness shop (on location), you’re taken to a briefing area where you learn the details of what you’ll be doing - how to clip onto the tree, how to use your zipline trolley, etc. Then you will head up the hill to the practice area, where you’ll get some hands-on experience with the equipment. “We added the training feature a couple of summers ago to allow our climbers to get acclimated a little more quickly,” Huffman said. “It’s really streamlined the entire thing. Climbers are now much more familiar / comfortable using the equipment.” Continue to walk up the trail and you’ll finally understand what all the hype is about. (Writer’s Note: The initial feeling of walking into the park is unmatched. A really cool experience.) You begin to see the platforms. Your senses are assaulted with laughter, high fives, encouragement and the distinct buzzing of the ziplines. Halloran and Huffman went west to do some recon on future things that can be added to the park, course maintenance and newer technologies. For the time being, the park will be kept the same - the first summer nothing has been added on. As it sits, Sky High gives you 13 courses to choose from, all of varying difficulty. The beginner course platforms sit lower to the ground, while one of the advanced courses sees you zip across Punch Bowl. The double black diamond course, fittingly called ‘Commando’ is at the top-most part of the canopy. The Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster, which follows the Spruce Lift up and spins and circles on the way back down, was introduced the same year the aerial park was. Loading into the sled, you’re given safety instructions until you hear the distinct click-click-click of a roller coaster. You control the brakes, so you can let it fly or take it easy on the way down. The 3-D Climbing Forest, which debuted a few short summers ago, takes a rock climbing wall concept and applies it to the trees. Handles are strapped around the tree, while the climber is attached to a self-belay. When you climb to the top and ring the bell, you push off from the tree, gently floating back down to the ground. Don’t let yourself sit around all summer. Get outside, conquer some fears and get active. For more information on Holiday Valley’s Sky High Adventure Park, head over to their pages: www.holidayvalley.com or facebook.com/SkyHighAdventurePark.

Fresh TASTY Flavors for a New Season Team EBC Serving Up Bao Bun Sliders and a Sweet Brew to Boost By Joshua McDowell Heading into springtime here in Ellicottville, we are excited to unveil a new dish at Ellicottville Brewing Company that is prepared using a unique little gem, a Bao bun – or in other words, a deliciously soft Asian-style steamed bun. There are many different variations (as well as names) for this bun throughout the countries of Asia. And for those of you that think a steamed bun isn’t really all that appetizing and are ready to turn the page … STOP! I have to tell you these little guys are fantastic! They are generally folded similar to a taco shell, which makes this type of bun very different than what we are accustomed to here in the U.S. The challenge is finding these things; they are generally available in the freezer section of Asian markets or high-end grocery stores. And although it seems like a lot of effort just to have this bun in our dish, trust me, this thing will take the championship spot when it’s served during your next visit with us!
LET’S PUT IT TOGETHER The Bao bun is a very versatile bun. You can fill it with anything you like! (Think “sandwiches” … what do you like to fill your sandwiches with?) It has a unique flavor and texture; it is light, fluffy, and has a touch of sweetness, so it works well with spring style foods – perfect for this time of year as we start changing over to fresher green vegetables and grilled / smoked meats. For the EBC menu, we’ve put together a couple different kinds of sliders using these buns - one with smoked pork shoulder and the other one with roasted chicken. For the pork Bao, we lightly fry the pork in a sauté pan to add a crispy texture. In addition, we add julienned cucumber, chopped cilantro, and a garlic / lime aioli. As for the roasted chicken
Bao, we combine a little baby kale and thin sliced Brussels sprouts with a light sesame/ orange vinaigrette. For those of you who opt to search out these buns for pleasure in your own kitchen, prepare the buns to manufacturer’s specifications, and once they are hot, just fill ‘em up and enjoy!
LET’S PAIR IT WITH BEER A new dish, a new brew! Introducing EBC’s Just Peachy (I know the brewery guys are very proud of this one.) I’m also convinced that this new release was perfected upon inception. This light and refreshing summer delight is made with Canadian barley, American wheat, Oregon sweet peaches, and black tea which dries the beer a little and keeps it from becoming too sweet. It is simply a perfectly crafted beer with the right amount of crispness to accentuate the Bao bun sliders. And it’s a much welcomed flavor to help reintroduce all of the lovely things that we enjoy so much about spring and summer. So there you have it … a couple of fresh new products from our family here at EBC. Until next time folks, be safe and enjoy the spring weather, Bao bun concoctions, and Just Peachy brew by our staff here at Ellicottville Brewing Company. Chef Joshua McDowell is a graduate of the Pennsylvania Institute of Culinary Arts of Pittsburgh, PA. He carries a Bachelor’s degree in Culinary Arts and offers 18 years of experience in the food service industry, 12 of those years in the Ellicottville, NY area. Joshua currently holds the title as Executive Chef at Ellicottville Brewing Company, 28 Monroe Street, downtown Ellicottville, NY, 716-699-2537, www.ellicottvillebrewing.com.

The Enchanted Mountains
. . . Naturally Yours
PARK YOURSELF in Cattaraugus County This Spring! Hellooo May! That means warmer weather and the opportunity to get outside and watch nature blossom! The Enchanted Mountains of Cattaraugus County boasts many locations to take in the fantastic views of the budding trees, plenty of places to stop and smell the flowers, and lots of ways to warm up those muscles after a long, cold winter! The first of May welcomes the opening of three of the most popular attractions here: Rock City Park, Griffis Sculpture Park and Onoville Marina! Rock City Park offers visitors a top spot to take in the surrounding landscapes via “Signal Rock”. Discover 80-foot tall rock formations leftover from the ice age. Hike the trail that leads under, around and sometimes through these magnificent rocks, then check out the souvenir and rock shop or the Fluorescent Light Rock Room. Plan a trip to the park May 9-10 for their annual Arts and Crafts Show. Artisans will display watercolors, oils, sculptures, photography, glass, metals and much more! This park is a great way to start your springtime fun! 505 Route 16, Olean, NY, phone 716-372-7790, www.rockcitypark.com. The grass is always greener at Griffis Sculpture Park, where nature combines with art for a memorable experience each time you visit. Hike along the trail and discover over 250 enormous sculptures. Adults are fond of this park because it possesses a beauty like no other, while children like the park because they can climb on some of the sculptures! Pack a picnic and bask in the warmth of the sun while resting next to a giant giraffe or beside the ladies of the lake. Griffis Sculpture Park is located in East Otto, NY. For directions, photo gallery and more information, head to griffispark.org.
“Put in” at Onoville Marina, the largest inland marina in New York State. Campsites, dock space and a fuel dock are available as well as great dining nearby at the Horseshoe Inn and the Nic-L-Inn. View the beautiful scenery of rolling hills, crystal clear water, and wooded areas as you drift or speed along! Boat rentals are available at the Bayview Mini-Mart and Ice Cream Parlor. Mark July 25 on your calendar for Onofest, a day-long event filled with music, food, crafts and fireworks! 704 W. Perimeter Road, Steamburg, NY, phone 716-354-2615, boat rentals 716-354-2021, onovillemarina.org.
Slow down and enjoy a simpler way of life along the Amish Trail. Meander your way along the back roads of the western side of Cattaraugus County, which is home to a community of Old Order Amish. Adventure through this area to find unique handiworks and learn about a culture which lives separate from the modern world. You’ll appreciate their beautiful gardens and witness animals that have just been born this spring! Stop by one of the many Amish greenhouses for beautiful flowers, house plants, and small vegetable plants to improve your own garden. Schedule a guided tour by calling 716-358-9701 x 208 or travel at your own pace. You can request an Amish Trail brochure at amishtrail.com. Ski slopes, snowmobiling trails, and snow-covered fields have bloomed into area golf courses! Whether you prefer a quick 9-hole game or a challenging 18-hole excursion, Cattaraugus County offers premium golfing at affordable prices. Choose from one private, four miniature, and seven public golf courses. Each is surrounded by the beauty of our county and has many extras to offer. For convenience, stay at one of the cabins at Elkdale Country Club, or aim for the fairways at Cardinal Hills Golf Course in Randolph after spending the morning exploring the Amish Trail. For a complete list of courses, visit enchantedmountains.com.
It’s time to get that motorcycle out of storage! Take a ride on the open road and join in one of the spring motorcycling events planned in this area. Gowanda Harley-Davidson will host its annual Ride to Remember on Memorial Day. Honor and respect those who served and the reason behind the day. Then let loose at the Hollywood Happening, one of the area’s largest motorcycle events. Three days of live bands, contests, vendors and rides to benefit the ongoing restoration efforts of the Hollywood Theater. Full details on this year’s Hollywood Happening can be found at www.gowandahollywoodhappening.com.

NATURE’S PLAYGROUND

By Pat Morgan Well that was a heck of a winter, wouldn’t you say? Sustained cold temps, bountiful snowfall, and incredible conditions at our local ski resorts - what could be better? Well as it goes, all good things must come to an end. It’s time to retire the ski equipment and set our sights on warmer thoughts and activities. Fortunately for those residing here in the Southern Tier, one of the prized sources for outdoor activity is just down the road in Salamanca, NY … Allegany State Park. With so much to explore and enjoy, let’s get you up to speed with some of its offerings, as well as what you can expect this summer at this incredible park. While some may think the Adirondack region offers the most in terms of park acreage, Allegany State Park actually takes the cake here in New York State, boasting more than 65,000 acres. Hiking your thing? With 18 trails (not to mention 3 self-guided nature trails), you can most certainly cover some ground. If pedaling is more your speed, there are over five miles of paved trail where you can take in some of the breathtaking scenery the park has to offer, including a 3-mile clip around Red House Lake. ASP is often included in many of the road cycling loops for the purists in the area, due to its favorable elevation changes and scenery. A quick Google or social media search of the aforementioned scenery and you’ll quickly understand the appeal of the park to those who visit … gorgeous backdrops for fishing, boating / kayaking, pavilions and grills to host that perfect picnic day, a beach with real sand! … shall we go on? It may go without saying, but what park would be complete without camping! ASP features two very well outfitted camping areas, dubbed ‘Red House’ & ‘Quaker’ with over 300 sites and 350 cabins between the two of them. Nearly half the sites and the majority of cabins feature electricity as well. Pricing varies based on site, cabin, or duration of your stay, and it’s important to know an advance reservation is needed to camp at the park. Easy enough … 1-800-456-2267 will put you in touch with a reservation specialist who can get you squared away with exactly what you need. Allegany State Park also features some pretty fun family events throughout the summer. One of the newest events (introduced this spring) has been dubbed the ‘3rd Saturday Treks’ at ASP - free, guided, family-friendly hikes which will continue through the month of October. If a more competitive event is what you’re looking for, the Allegany Adventure Race presented by heartrateup. com will return on Saturday, May 2. Three courses await participants as they take on the rolling, non-technical trails of the Art Roscoe Trail System within ASP. Other notable events planned this month: Red House Lake Spring Fishing Tournament May 9; the growing popularity of Geobash (this is its 10th year!) May 16-17; and the annual Allegany Nature Pilgrimage May 29-31. Nature enthusiasts have gathered for this special weekend each year since 1959!
PREPARE YOURSELF: FIND THE GOODS AT THE CITY GARAGE Another important detail when planning a visit to ASP is to make sure you stop into your local specialty shop and stock up on all the accessories you need (as well as some you didn’t even know you needed!) We recommend The City Garage as your pre-park pitstop. Located on Monroe Street in downtown Ellicottville, the C.G. may be your favorite place to shop during ski season, but come summertime, it transforms into a one-stop shopping experience ideal for anyone planning a trek into the woods. Not only do they have worthy trail rated footwear from brands like Salomon and Merrel, they also stock some of the newly popular camping and glamping accessories on the market. One of their most popular lines is that of GSI Outdoors, manufacturers of interesting, compatible camping accessories, which help users bring the comforts of home with them to the great outdoors. From compatible cookware to stainless steel wine glasses perfect for fireside chats, this brand has countless options for your excursion. The City Garage also carries ideally-sized bluetooth audio solutions from Outdoor Technologies (even Mother Nature appreciates a good playlist), cookware and containers from Stanley, and if you’re feeling like exploring a new sport on your trip: stand-up paddle boards from BIC. Load up your board and head out on the lake at Allegany State Park. Or if renting is more pleasing to the wallet, the state park offers paddleboards and paddleboats on-site for an hourly fee. Now that you’re armed with information, the only question is not if, but when will you visit Allegany State Park? Get out there and enjoy what our amazing region has to offer … you’ll be grateful you did!
NOTABLE HIGHLIGHTS OF ALLEGANY STATE PARK
• Thunder Rocks: a cluster of huge conglomerate boulders at the top of the ridge offers a lesson in geology as well as a natural jungle gym for the more adventurous. There are several things to look for among these impressive rocks. The weather has sculpted several rocks into fascinating shapes; children have found gorillas, a whale, a frog and a turtle. The area also contains many Appalachian species of plants not usually found in Western NY. • Bear Caves: 165 million years ago great geological activity caused block-faulting and uplifting to occur throughout the region. This resulted in openings in the bedrock along collapsed faults creating cave-like openings. There are three of these openings that can be explored but bring a flashlight. • Fire Tower: a restored 1926 fire tower sits on one of the highest peaks in the Red House Area. The tower is open at certain times during the summer when visitors are invited to climb to the top for a spectacular view. • Old Growth Forest: over 3,000 acres of mature forest with some of the largest trees in the state. • Old Quaker Store Museum: the history of the park from ancient bedrock formation to the park’s development is displayed and interpreted for park visitors inside this building. • Red House Administration Building and Natural History Museum: a rustic Tudor style building houses the administrative offices for the Allegany Region as well as a gift shop, restaurant, rental office and museum displaying wildlife native to the park. • North County / Finger Lakes Trail: the national trail from the Adirondacks in the east to North Dakota in the west. 18 miles of the trail traverse the park passing through some of the most impressive mature forest in NYS and connecting in the south to the Allegheny National Forest and beyond. HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo to Rock Seneca Allegany Casino, Salamanca, NY
A Conversation with Pat and Neil HULICK: On April 28 your “35th Anniversary Tour CD/DVD” was released. You are currently touring in conjunction with its release, and we are lucky enough to be one of the stops on the tour. Can you tell me a little bit about the CD/DVD collection? GIRALDO: Well it’s a collection of our greatest and groundbreaking hits. It’s exciting to achieve a milestone like this in your career and it is going to be a blast to tour and share this with our fans. BENATAR: Our lead-off single from the live CD is “Promises in the Dark” and we are thrilled to be releasing this live version of the song. “Promises” has a special meaning for us. It was the first song we wrote together, about our own relationship. It was a little awkward at first, to be sure! It has become one of our signature compositions and a favorite to play live.
............................... FRIDAY, JULY 3, 2015 | 7:00 P.M.
HULICK: Your marriage is a real “love story” that has lasted 33 years and your partnership musically has been going strong for 35 years. What makes it work so well? BENATAR: You know when I was trying to figure out what or who I wanted to be musically, Neil came into my life to help me figure that out. I was looking for a partnership that would make me more than just a band, and in the same vein I didn’t want it to be all about me, which was very easy to fall into in those days. The fact that we fell in love and have been happily married was more than we could have even thought would happen. GIRALDO: Everything just clicked - professionally and personally with us. We had the same ideas; the same goals … and we worked together through it all and raised a family along the way. Everything was done together or it didn’t happen. We love each other and we love what we do … and when you get the chance, that once in a lifetime chance, you take extra care of that. BENATAR: We are each other’s muse and have been from the moment we met.
Rockers Pat Benatar and her husband Neil Giraldo are heading this way for a rockin’ hot night of music Friday, July 3 at Seneca Allegany Casino in Salamanca.
HULICK: Pat, you are credited as one of the female vocalists who paved the way for females to make a stand and be successful in the music industry. Did you realize that at the time? BENATAR: I guess in a way I was aware of it. I know that every day was tumultuous. It was like a sport, but I was up for the challenge … I was just basically part of that movement that was happening at the time with female vocalists. I was having a great time and we knocked down a lot of barriers, and I’m glad I got to be a part of it.
It’s been 35 years since the husband and wife powerhouse met, teamed up and fell in love. Having recently released a live CD/DVD collection titled “Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo: The 35th Anniversary Tour”, they will be touring through the summer to party with their fans across the country.
HULICK: I hear you love to cook. BENATAR: Yes! I really didn’t cook much until I met Neil. He loves to eat so I started cooking when I met him.
The singer and her guitar playing husband, who also serves as producer and arranger, honed her voice to create that unmistakable sound that is part of the soundtrack of the 1980’s.
HULICK: What types of food do you like to cook? GIRALDO: She does a lot of Italian dishes because I’m half Sicilian. BENATAR: Yes, and we love to grill.
By Melanie Hulick
Of the 10 Grammy ceremonies in the 1980’s, Benatar was nominated nine times and won 4 consecutive Grammys for Best Female Rock Performance between 1980 and 1983. One of the fun bits of trivia that you may or may not know about is that her video of the song “You Better Run” was the second video ever played on MTV and he was the first guitarist ever featured. With hits like “ Heartbeaker”, “Hit Me With Your Best Shot”, “Love Is A Battlefield” and “We Belong”, Benatar is a staple of classic rock stations and a force to be reckoned with on the tour stage. With sold-out shows around the country, Benatar and Giraldo know what fans want from a show … a rockin’ great time that takes you away from the everyday mayhem and lets you relive those crazy 80’s with their unforgettable rock anthems about love.
HULICK: Does anyone else in your family like to cook? BENATAR: Yes, our daughters do. One loves to bake. HULICK: What’s your favorite song of all the ones you’ve recorded? BENATAR: “Heartbreaker” for sure. It was my first hit and it was when Neil and I teamed up and started this sound that would define us musically. HULICK: You’ve played this area before and we are looking forward to your return on July 3rd. BENATAR: We are looking forward to it as well. It is such a beautiful area and the fans are terrific. Be ready to rock!

TRAIL CENTRAL
PENNSYLVANIA TROUT SEASON IS OPEN!
The Allegheny National Forest Region, located in northwestern Pennsylvania, offers the angler a wide variety of fishing opportunities from native brook trout to trophy fishing for muskie, pike, and walleye. The Allegheny (Kinzua) Reservoir and the surrounding hundreds of miles of streams are perfect for trout fishing. The statewide opening day for Pennsylvania Trout Season was April 18, 2015. Fishing is permitted 24 hours a day; minimum legal size is 7 inches. grey fox, march brown, green drakes and native brown trout can be found in the local waters. Two areas to try your luck in the search for trout: the East Branch of the Tunungwant Creek for wild trout, and the Allegheny River for stocked trout. Both areas are located in McKean County.
FIRST, MAKE A TRIP TO SPORTSMAN’S OUTLET This large, non-chain, outlet sporting goods store is a place where you can talk to experienced staff. They actively use the outdoor equipment they sell. They live, breath and dream fishing, hunting and camping. It is more than likely Josh or Ben will have fished a local stream in the morning before coming into work. “Shiny is the way to go. If you get glimmer, fish will see the lure,” explained friendly store clerk Josh, when asked about some favorite fishing lures. “C.P. Swing Spinning Lure is a favorite; color depends on personal preference. If a fisherman had luck with pink previously, they’ll most likely come in looking for pink again. The store carries a full line of trout spinners, fishing baits and natural salmon eggs. Some of our customers use trout dough bait - you ball it up and put it on a hook. It replicates hatchery pallets so it is good for stocked streams. Just about everyone that walks through the door after trout season opens buys Big Boy Natural Salmon Eggs.” Trout fishermen will want to invest in a good pair of hip waders. Lacrosse is recommended as a good quality wader that will hold up, and you can purchase a pair in the price range of $100. The store’s extensive collection of trout rods includes ultra-light styles with sensitive tips so you can feel the fish bite. Okoma SST, Celilo, and Saint Croix are just a few name brand rods in stock. Prices range from $25 to over $400. Find the equipment you need at Sportsman’s Outlet
For kids just starting out, the “Take Me Fishing Box” includes starting tackle, brass baked latch, a full size lift-out tray and a plano tackle system. Part of the sale price goes to support the Future Fisherman Foundation. A full line of men’s, women’s and children’s outdoor clothing and boots are also available. Kayak Old Towne is a good entry level kayak to get you out on the water. Ocean Kayak and Necky Kayak brands offer sleek lines and elegant lightweight shapes. All are made in the United States. A large inventory makes it easy to view models hands on. Along with kayaks, the store carries a full line of life jackets, as well as a large selection of camping equipment, and a wide variety of turkey calls. “Turkey season in the spring woods is good turkey hunting,” explained Ben Wentworth, one of the storeowners. “Turkey are plentiful here. The state record came from McKean County in the Minard Run area. Quaker Boy-Easy Yelper, one of the calls we offer, is a good quality, locally made turkey call. When using turkey decors it is better to be very realistic. Turkeys see very well; you’ll want to wear lightweight clothing in total camouflage, including a face mask and gloves. We also offer turkey stands and turkey mounting kits perfect for displaying your trophy. You will need to learn to be quiet and still if you want to be successful.” Ben and the staff at Sportsman’s Outlet invite you to stop by and chat with them, as the best thing to do is to ask the locals. They will be more than happy to help outfit you with just the right gear for the sport of your choice, and possibly give you a hint or two about a favorite local fishing spot. 500 Chestnut Street, Bradford, PA, phone 814-362-7700.
PENNSYLVANIA FISHING LICENSES FOR TOURISTS Pennsylvania tourist fishing licenses are available for 1, 3 or 7 days. Resident and senior resident licenses are also available. May 8, 1945 ... V-E Day (Victory in Europe Day), when Germany surrendered to the Allied Forces. September 2, 1945 ... V-J Day (Victory in Japan Day), when Japan Representatives signed the Surrender of Japan aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. This May, as we soon will observe Memorial Day, there is added significance, as we honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in serving our wonderful country. To commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the events which brought an end to World War II, the Eldred World War II Museum and the McKean County Historical Society are presenting a World War II USO Style Show: “70 years of Red, White, and Blue.” The performance will take place May 30, 2015 at 7:30pm in the Bromeley Family Theater on the Campus of the University of Pittsburgh in Bradford, PA.

The Summer Local is a publication produced by DesignPerks PO Box 1077, Ellicottville, NY 14731
According to Ardyth R. Van Scoy, creative director, choreographer, and costumer of “70 Years of Red, White & Blue,” this production is not to be missed: “Expect a performance very similar to what the troops would have seen during World War II.” Van Scoy, who has been working on the show for six months, has an extensive background in music, theater, and costuming. A graduate of St. Bonaventure University, Van Scoy holds an art degree and an impressive resume, for not only was she involved in many on-campus productions, but she was a professional costumer for four years in theaters all over western New York. Additionally, Van Scoy has been involved with the McKean County Historical Society for several years. Her relationship with the historical society began when she completed her college internship as a student at St. Bonaventure University. Later, she directed and starred in the historical society’s production of “Belle Boyd: Confederate Spy,” and directed an ensembleperformance of traditional folk music, “Front Porch Melodies.” The authenticity of “70 Years of Red, White & Blue” extends beyond the show’s costuming, for the performances are thoughtfully based on USO shows of World War II. Rather than a traditional play with a linear plot, USO (United Service Organization) live shows featured the headlining entertainers of the day in different musical and comedy routines. The USO is probably most well-known for its performances called Camp Shows, in which Hollywood stars entertained U.S. troops overseas to boost morale during the war. Over the course of the war, the USO did thousands of performances for the troops, featuring such stars as Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, and many more. Not only did these performances bring home to the G.I., but they also rallied the spirits of those at home waiting for their loved ones’ return. The eight cast members of “70 Years of Red, White & Blue”, among whom is Van Scoy, and will perform the roles of the Andrews Sisters, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Martha Raye, Betty Hutton, Carole Landis, Francis Langford, and Al Jolson. In the words of Van Scoy, “I’m really fortunate to be working with such a great group of actors from this area who are all working so hard to make this a wonderful show.” Four local musicians including a percussionist, a pianist, a horn/trumpet player, and a bassist will bring each musical number to life. “Four musicians may not seem like a lot,” explained Van Scoy, “but that would have been standard or even above average during World War II. USO shows weren’t big productions and had to be able to travel around easily without a large crew.” Tickets to “70 Years of Red, White & Blue” are $35 and are on sale now at the Eldred World War II Museum and the McKean County Historical Society. Tickets are also available online at www.wwiishow.com via Paypal. World War II veterans should contact the Eldred World War II Museum at 814-225-2220 or the McKean County Historical society at 814-887-5142 for information on how to get a complimentary ticket for a front row seat. Guests are encouraged to arrive before 7:30pm, as the “canteen” will be open for refreshments, and the band will be playing. To learn more about the show and view cast photos, visit the website listed or find “70 Years of Red, White & Blue,” on Facebook.

THE BIODOME PROJECT OF JAMESTOWN: ‘SUPPORT LOCAL EVERYTHING’ By Dash Hegeman What will you be having for dinner tonight? Where did you get that food? Was it a local supermarket or a corporate chain store? And better yet, do you know where that food really originated from? Simple enough questions but not always ones with easy answers. The BioDome Project, located in downtown Jamestown, NY, was started under the premise that there are too many people who not only cannot answer these questions but also do not even take the time to contemplate them. It is this societal unawareness that has helped lead to problems like “super pests”, water shortages, the death of massive quantities of bees, and transportation inefficiencies. Should these issues continue to go unchecked the results will have potentially catastrophic ramifications to mankind. That is where Ryan Peterson, Bill Thomas, and Angela Caley decided that they could make a difference, even if that difference started off as a small one. You see, if things go according to their plans, they will educate you; you will pass that newfound information on to someone else and the cycle will repeat itself until collectively we have a more socially responsible decision making mindset. So what exactly is The BioDome Project? Defining it in one sentence is a difficult task. It is a locally owned art gallery, artisans’ market, and indoor gardening experiment that is focused on growing plants and helping to enhance the Jamestown, NY community. According to Peterson, local artists of all modalities can apply to sell their goods in the space that the BioDome runs. To date the storefront has merchandise from about 20 different vendors and has plans to add more this coming summer. Those artists pay a monthly rental fee and a small percentage of their sales to the BioDome group, and in return the BioDome crew promotes and sells the inventory that is in the store. Upon entering the establishment you will find a space that has been meticulously refurbished to portray the ideologies of the BioDome Project. Wood floors, clean offwhite walls furnished with artwork and locally crafted shelves, and an impressive homemade system of hydroponically nourished plants in the front window make up the main storefront layout. The entire process took about seven months to complete and the attention to detail is noticeable, not only in the aesthetic layout but also from the pride in the voices of the owners as they speak about this project that has grown leaps and bounds in less than a year. There is more space available for expansion and the trio of partners has plans to do so in the near future. The BioDome Project is the quintessential definition of a labor of love. Peterson states that he grew up with a family that was all about preservation of resources, shopping locally, and growing your own food. When he had the opportunity to team up with a couple of like-minded friends in an effort to spread that philosophy, Peterson jumped at it. While the ‘shop local’ philosophy and the promotion of local artists is a noteworthy undertaking, the truly unique aspect of The BioDome Project is its emphasis on hydroponic systems to grow plants and vegetables. As Peterson explained, hydroponics allows for the roots of the plants to get direct access to all the water and nutrients that they require. The results are that the plants grow faster and more efficiently because this system allows for less water usage over the lifetime of the plant. Additionally it is a cleaner system, as you aren’t dealing with dirt or fertilizers so it can be done inside your house without making a mess. Another added bonus (for those of you who might not be so good at remembering to water your plants) is that the hydroponic system all but takes care of the watering process for you. If you are interested in purchasing hydroponics for your own use, The BioDome crew is very knowledgeable about the process and they do take orders for building systems that you can install in your home. There will be a plant and seed showcase at the shop soon so make sure to stay tuned to the website and Facebook for information on that and how you can start your growing season off strong!

Bring your (friendly) dogs, Frisbees, hula hoops and smiles! Special lodging packages are available for Mudslide participants. 716-699-2345 www.holidayvalley.com
