AWARD-WINNING WINE

When you walk into the Eldred WWII Museum, you are immersed in the history of humanity’s greatest conflict. The outcome of the Second World War shaped the geopolitical and economic path of the rest of the century, and its repercussions are still being felt. That’s not the type of conflict we shouldn’t strive to continue to learn about, let alone forget.

CUSTOM ORDERS

The Museum and its impressive collection of artifacts aims to educate generations about the sacrifice of the people who lived it and fought it. You would never guess that one of the War’s rarest relics lies within its halls - a working gyroscope of a torpedo, with the only other in known existence at The Smithsonian.

BIRTHDAYS ANNIVERSARIES WEDDINGS GRADUATIONS ... ANY OCCASION!

History and relics, unfortunately, do not pay the bills. Which is why the importance of donating and supporting the Museum is significant. On Saturday, July 7, the 3rd Annual Eldred WWII Golf Tournament will take place at Boliver Golf Club. Since its birth, the tournament has raised over $50,000 for the Museum, helping in restoration, utilities and other costs. It has filled up both years, bringing in over 120 golfers annually. This year, to help raise awareness for the Museum itself, the tournament committee is hosting a kickoff party.

“The party is on the Thursday (July 5th) before the tournament,” organizer Diana Phalon said. “The idea is to get folks to come to the Museum, see everything that’s there and how awesome it is. If you’re playing in the tournament, it’s free entry - or $5 to get in if you’re not. We’ll do a Chinese auction that night, have drinks/food out, and we’re hoping it will drive some community support.” For the tournament itself, expect all of the fun of a traditional golf outing. “The entry fee ($65) includes dinner, door prizes, greens fees/cart, in-tournament games and a mulligan,” she said. “Shop N’ Save (of Bradford) is our biggest sponsor this year, and McCourt Label (of Lewis Run) donated all of the printing and advertising costs. We’ve got a Scotty Cameron putter to give away, plus a ton of other great prizes - including some from the Bills, Sabres and Bisons.” There will be a signup link online in the near future (Phalon was working on it at the time of writing) or you can call the Museum to sign up that way. “The support from the community the last few years has been outstanding,” she said. “This year, we’re hoping to raise $30,000.” For more info on the tournament or the museum itself, contact the Eldred WWII Museum at 814-225-2220 or go to eldredpawwiimuseum.com. The Eldred WWII Museum is located at 201 Main Street, Eldred, PA. Bolivar Golf Club is located at 8212 Halls Road, Bolivar, NY.

Golfing In a Ski Town Black Diamonds aren’t just a winter thing

Holiday Valley Resort rolls out the green carpet as they say goodbye to ski season and swing into summer DRIVING RANGE DOUBLE BLACK DIAMOND GOLF COURSE Nestled in the heart of Holiday Valley, the Double Black Diamond Golf Course tests all aspects of your game. Playing 6,493 yards from the tips (Par 70), it features stunning Par 3s, a ravine on #11 and the signature #13 with elevated tee boxes and views of the entire valley. There are plenty of opportunities to get in trouble trees, fairway bunkers and water make par anything but easy. While the Front 9 is relatively flat, the Back swiftly changes elevation, and club choice can become tricky (especially on the #15 ... 5 iron or 7?) But as daunting as the course may seem, grab some friends and cold ones from the oncourse beverage cart - you’ll have the best round of the summer!

HOLIDAY VALLEY PRO SHOP The Pro Shop, located where the wintertime Mountain Shop is, has a full selection of clubs, bags, clothing and accessories. So don’t sweat it if you show up to your round having forgotten something. Golf’s best brands - Titleist, Callaway, Nike, Ping, FootJoy and others - can be found in the Pro Shop, as well as club rentals and a USGA computer to input your score/find your handicap.

GOLF AND LODGING PACKAGES Make a trip out of your golf! The Valley offers a myriad of lodging packages specific to golfers. Options include staying at The Inn or Tamarack (both with views of the course), and packages can be tailored to include additional rounds, dinner, lunch, or tickets to Sky High Adventure Park. Guests receive complimentary entry to the pool, club cleaning/storage and breakfast.

Holiday Valley’s practice facility, located across the street from the resort, boasts over 50 covered and grass hitting stations, a chipping green and a putting green. Dial your distance in with flags at 100, 150, 200 and 250 yards (and brag to your friends about labeling the tree that’s way out). Reloadable key fobs are available at the Pro Shop, or buy tokens on-site. The range is also home to the Mel Sole Golf School and lessons from any of HV’s PGA Professionals.

GOLF LESSONS Holiday Valley is home to PGA Professional Steve Carney, Class A PGA Member Kyle Benish and USGTF Instructor Tom Dirito. They offer group and private lessons, including junior and ladies. There are 10 junior clinics throughout July and August, and clubs/balls are provided! Beginner Ladies Group lessons are also available every week throughout the season. With Steve, you can do a playing lesson, while Kyle will use the V1 video software to break down and analyze your swing.

BOOK YOUR GROUP OUTING Get a group of friends or coworkers together for a 9- or 18-hole golf outing at HV! If group pricing isn’t incentive enough, the Valley will do anything from provide lunch or dinner for the group to personalized scorecards. Other options available include contests like longest drive or closest to the pin, parties at Cabana, beverage cart on-course and more to provide an awesome golf-centric experience.

CABANA BAR:

Whether you’re finishing a round of golf, hanging poolside or just want to sit outside, the Cabana Bar makes summertime living easy. Located between the Main Lodge and Tamarack (adjacent to the pool), the Cabana is a fully-stocked bar with food and beverage service from John Harvard’s Brew House. Bartenders concoct summer drink specials daily, and a smoothie/daiquiri machine keeps the kids (and parents, depending on the pour) happy.

5

SKY HIGH ADVENTURE PARK: Now in its 7th summer, Sky High Adventure Park has established itself as the go-to adventure activity in the area. Strap on a harness, get your safety briefing and head into the trees ... either 10-15 feet off the ground (yellow courses) or way up near the top of the treeline (blues and blacks). Test your athleticism on the double black diamond Commando Course, or take a zipline across Punch Bowl on Black Storm. After you complete the zipline course back to the bottom, take a breather before hitting the 3D climbing forest. One of only a few of these parks in the entire country, the climbing forest uses the same handholds you find on a rock climbing wall, just attached to the trees. Sky High is great for families, birthday parties, bachelor/bachelorette parties or team building.

6

MOUNTAIN COASTER: Fly through the trees on the Sky Flyer

POOL COMPLEX:

The pools at Holiday Valley, located by the Main Lodge, are open from Memorial to Labor Day. There’s a kiddie, adult and main pool, with the latter featuring a diving board and slide. Grab a day pass or a summer pass for unlimited access (applications available at www.holidayvalley.com). There are also swimming lessons available for both kids and adolescents. Don’t forget about the yard games - cornhole, giant Jenga and more.

JOHN HARVARD’S BREW HOUSE:

Located inside the Tamarack Club, John Harvard’s is the perfect spot to grab a bite pre/post golf. Harvard’s offers daily lunch and dinner specials, over 20 beers on tap and poolside service. Enjoy views of the pool and golf course whether you dine inside or on their outdoor patio!

ELLICOTTVILLE OASIS SPA: Also located in the Tamarack

Club is the Ellicottville Oasis Spa. Offering massages, facials and body wraps, the natural sunlight that pours into Oasis will leave you completely rejuvenated. Individual and group packages are available - call or book an appointment online, or pop in to see what times they have open.

7

Mountain Coaster! A combination of an alpine slide and a roller coaster, sleds can carry one or two people. Ride the brakes through the loops or keep them pushed forward to get your adrenaline pumping. Mountain Coaster tickets are available in the Sky High harness shop, where you can buy single or multiple runs.

MOUNTAIN BIKING TRAIL SYSTEM:

There are miles of accessible mountain biking trails at Holiday Valley, including two new trails built a few summers ago. The race loop (around 4 to 5 miles) takes you to the top of Cindy’s, then back down singletrack or the easier cross country trails. The Senear Valley Trail (flow trail) starts at the top of Spruce Lake and then takes you back to the Training Center. When mountain biking at HV please be aware that Sky High is off limits and always be cognizant of on-hill operations.

Peek’n Peak Resort SOARING EAGLE ZIPLINE, WEB.COM PGA TOUR, DISC GOLF, DINING, BONFIRES & BREWS

In 2017, Peek’n Peak Resort added an All-New Soaring Eagle Zipline, introduced two new dining options - Gazebo Grill and Bistro 210 - while adding a new favorite event series, Bonfires & Brews, and opening a disc golf course to expand the attractions available at the Peak Mountain Adventures. The All-New Soaring Eagle Zipline joins an aerial adventure course and giant dual ziplines among the action-packed Peak Mountain Adventures. Riders sit side by side and fly through the skies on the 1,400-foot zipline, reaching heights of 130 feet. The attraction offers guests stunning views of the resort and surrounding valley. The newly revealed Bistro 210 at Peek’n Peak treats guests to exquisite flavors from around the world using the freshest ingredients available. Named after an average snowfall of 210 inches, Bistro 210 celebrates the heart, soul and nostalgia of the first 50 years at Peek’n Peak Resort. While in the restaurant, diners may choose from a large selection of domestic and imported beers plus a fully stocked, truly unique, geode-topped bar. The creative cuisine pairs well with a craft beer and stylistic sounds of live entertainment every weekend. Enjoy a peaceful summer night at Gazebo Grill, Peek’n Peak’s newest dining option. Choose to dine under the gazebo to enjoy fresh air and scenic landscapes alongside fire pits and lawn games including croquet, bocce and cornhole. Inspired by its surroundings, Gazebo Grill features an updated farmto-table aesthetic and full-service bar. After dinner, partake in friendly competition on the resort’s new Disc Golf Course, which winds throughout the resort’s expansive property. Or, head to the Peak on select Saturdays for Bonfires & Brews, a signature summertime event at Gazebo Grill featuring live music, s’mores, lawn games, an outdoor grill and a huge bonfire. In 2018, the resort will once again host professional golfers and golf enthusiasts for the PGA Web.com Tour’s LECOM Health Challenge. The week-long tournament will be played on the Peek’n Peak Upper Course, beginning with a Pro-Am on July 3 and four official rounds of tournament play July 5-8, 2018. Spectators are welcome to watch the tournament alongside their favorite players on the course, or at several designated spectator areas. Come October, Peek’n Peak will celebrate the start of the Fall season with its 31st Annual Peek’n Peak Fall Fest. Save the dates! This favorite Fall event will be held on two weekends: Oct. 13-14 and 20-21, 2018. Another favorite event, The Wurst Party Ever - a German Beirfest - will be held on November 3, 2018. Throughout the year, Peek’n Peak welcomes guests to 108 well-appointed guest rooms at the Inn, or the many slopeside condos that dot the mountain. Plan a visit to Peek’n Peak to enjoy a relaxing weekend at Serenity Spa, a family retreat at the Indoor/Outdoor Pool Complex, or a romantic evening at Bistro 210. Cardinal Hills

A TRIP TO HISTORIC RANDOLPH OFFERS ONE OF THE BEST JR. GOLF PROGRAMS IN THE AREA

By Mary Heyl Located just twenty miles from Ellicottville, the historic village of Randolph, New York is a great place to spend the weekend this summer! Pack your clubs, bring the family and plan to have a fun day exploring Cardinal Hills Golf Course, the Fish Hatchery, and more. You can even make a weekend out of it by staying at Randolph’s historic Inn at One Bank Street, right downtown! Randolph is home to one of the most popular golf courses in the area, Cardinal Hills Golf Course, located at 78 Conewango Road. Founded in 1927, this 18-hole par-72 course provides a relaxing but challenging experience for golfers of all levels. Despite the chilly start, golf course manager Eric Brown is looking forward to another busy season for 2018. Leagues for men, women, and seniors meet every day of the week, except Fridays. On Wednesdays beginning in July, the Mike Benca Jr. six-week instructional golf program teaches children the basics of golf and concludes with a tournament in August. Program directors Howie VanRensselaer and Keith Alexander are looking forward to leading this growing group once again. Alexander brings years of experience to the program, as he caddied at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina. The word is getting out about this excellent junior golf program, as Brown has several families outside the Randolph area bringing their young golfers this year. “For this area, I would be surprised if anyone has a better junior program than us,” said Brown. 2018 is the first full year that the course’s new event center will be open! The brand new, spacious event center opened in July 2017, just in time to host one of the course’s biggest tournaments, the Gotta Kiss Cancer Goodbye Tournament, which raises thousands of dollars each year for cancer patients and their families and donates funds for life-saving research. This year’s tournament is taking place on Saturday, July 21 and includes a hotdog/hamburger lunch at the turn and a catered dinner. Learn more and register at www.gottakisscancergoodbye.org. The event center is also available for private events such as weddings and baby showers, wedding receptions, family reunions, class reunions and more. According to Brown, there are still a few availabilities for the 2018 season, but some are already touring the facility and booking their events for 2019. To plan your visit to the course or to book your event, call 716-358-5409 or visit www. cardinalhillsny.com. If you are planning to spend the weekend on the course or hosting a special event at Cardinal Hills, book your stay at the historic Inn at One Bank Street. The Inn, which was once a fire station in the early 1900s, offers comfortable rooms and suites, each with a private bathroom and kitchenette. Special rates are available for those planning a golf getaway at Cardinal Hills. Call 716-358-2022 or visit www.theinnatonebankstreet.com to book your stay. No visit to Randolph is complete without a trip to the Randolph DEC Fish Hatchery, located just 2 miles east of the village at 10943 Hatchery Road. The Randolph Hatchery is one of just twelve hatcheries in New York State and raises brook, brown, and rainbow trout to stock public waters throughout Western New York. When the hatchery was being created in 1934, pond excavators discovered what appeared to be animal remains. As it turns out, these excavators stumbled upon the remains of a Columbian mammoth! The mammoth remains include both tusks and the skull and date back about 12,000 years, and are now stored in Albany. To learn more about what is now the most complete mammoth specimen ever discovered in New York State, check out the newly installed informational signs at the hatchery during your visit. Visitors are welcome to explore the hatchery year ‘round as it is open daily from 9:00am to 3:30pm. For more information, visitors can call the hatchery at 716-358-4755.

The Enchanted Mountains PARK IT ... in the heart of Cattaraugus County ... Where do you want to play?

Cattaraugus County, the Enchanted Mountains region, is home to many links that will certainly help you tee off springtime to premium golfing at affordable prices - and with beautiful views while you aim for the fairways. Between tee times however, there is so much to do and see off the course! The beginning of May marks the opening of the best of our parks including Rock City Park, Griffis Sculpture Park, Onoville Marina, and Sky High Adventure Park. How does a scenic boating trip by undeveloped shorelines sound? Or exploring huge rocks, or touring Old Order Amish Country, or seeing largerthan-life sculptures? It’s all here waiting for you, so … Where Do You Want to Play?

ONOVILLE MARINA 704 W. PERIMETER ROAD, STEAMBURG, NY 14738 | 716-354-2615 | onovillemarina.org Onoville Marina in South Valley offers pristine waters for boaters (both engine and paddle). This Marina gives you access to the Allegheny Reservoir and 91 miles of natural shoreline with secluded bays and no commercialization. Affordable prices whether you are launching for the day, applying for dock space or fueling up, there are also many restaurants and stores nearby. Ospreys and bald eagles are frequent flyers above the waters and the surrounding hills of forest.

ALLEGANY STATE PARK 2373 ASP ROUTE 1, SALAMANCA, NY 14779 | 716-354-9121 There’s no better place to see the birds soar, watch the leaves grow and picnic outdoors! One of the joys of summer vacationing is camping. Gather ‘round the campfire to hear the noises of the night while you “unplug” with your family. This park has much to boast about being the “Largest NY State Park” and offering a 24-mile trail system for mountain biking, two lakes, many more miles for hiking (including the North Country Trail), and just about any other outdoor activity you can think of. Packed full of events all year long, you can start with the Annual Geobash May 18-20, celebrating its 13th year! Keep your calendar clear for the Nature Pilgrimage (June 1-3), Raccoon Rally Cycling Festival Weekend (June 16-17), Rock the Park (July 20), Family Beach Party (August 17) and any of their Adventure Runs and Races!

ROCK CITY PARK 505 ROUTE 16 SOUTH, OLEAN, NY 14760 | 1-866-404-7625 | rockcitypark.com Explore massive outcropping of quartz conglomerate at Rock City Park. Climb around, on top of, and even under rocks that are sometimes 2 stories tall! Whether you are going for a short visit or a full day, this park destination will surely lead you on a different adventure each time you visit. There is a semi-paved trail about 1 mile long that is perfect for the whole family. But feel free to venture out from this trail, exploring whatever your eyes can spot. There is a gift shop with interesting and unique items, including many gems, minerals and fossils, as well as bathrooms, a picnic area, and outdoor art. Rock City Park hosts two annual events each season: a Mother’s Day weekend Arts and Crafts Show, and a second being a Gem, Mineral and Fossil Show in the Fall.

GRIFFIS SCULPTURE PARK 6902 MILL VALLEY ROAD, EAST OTTO, NY 14729 | 716-667-2808 | griffispark.org Griffis Sculpture Park is the perfect place to go for warm weather fun! Make your way by foot to the trail through the woods, where sculptures accent the walkway. You will then come to an opening where a field full of sculptures awaits. Climb on, meander around, hang from, crawl in, lay across, sit next to or just stare in awe at the larger-than-life sculptures scattered throughout the park. Relax with the Ladies of the Lake and follow the trails through the upper woods for even more discoveries. Take a short drive to the Rohr Hill Road site where towering sculptures walk the fields. Visit with the giant Kings and Queens or search the edge of the woods for more large animals. Spend a day or just an hour; you will surely be planning a return trip in the Autumn to witness the amazing color in the trees.

IN SEARCH OF A BIRDIE OR EAGLE? By Linda Devlin, ANF Visitors Bureau

In the game of golf you wish for a birdie or eagle; in the natural habitat of the Allegheny National Forest Region in northwestern Pennsylvania, you have a chance of seeing over 200 species of birds - including the American Bald Eagle. Seek out other opportunities for fun and relaxation along the many hiking trails within the forest, or via a little shopping therapy. THE GOLF TRAIL OF McKEAN COUNTY Enjoy playing on the public courses of Pine Acres Country Club and Kane Country Club, both located at the edge of the picturesque Allegheny National Forest. Or join as a member to enjoy all the privileges of the Pennhills Club, home of the Blaisdell Pro Am, in Bradford, PA. Golf season traditionally opens April 1, depending on the weather in our neck of the woods. Courses in McKean County, Pennsylvania are a short 90-minute drive from Buffalo and Erie, and an easy 3.5-hour drive from Toronto, Canada, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Cleveland, Ohio.

PENNHILLS CLUB 146 Pennhills Drive, Bradford, PA | 814-368-6159 | pennhillsclub.com Pennhills Club - a private golf club in Bradford, PA - is a focal point for golf and signature celebrations. Catered events at the Pennhills Club are known for their exceptional food and luxurious location.

The superb Tudor-manor style clubhouse, fashioned of brick and slate, is nestled between the softly rolling Allegheny Mountains of northern Pennsylvania. Recognized for their unparalleled service and exceptional menu, the club offers both social and golf memberships. The Zippo Lighter

BORN FROM AN IDEA THAT ORIGINATED ON THE GOLF COURSE An American Icon now over 80 years old remains a highly recognized collector’s item rich in military history By Mary Heyl

Zippo lighters and Case knives: few brands are more commonly associated with American ingenuity and manufacturing than these two. What’s more, these companies are still exclusively based in the United States and employ a combined 800 people just an hour south of Ellicottville on Route 219 in Bradford, Pennsylvania. Discover the unique history of these American icons at the Zippo/Case Museum located at 1932 Zippo Drive, and learn more about the museum’s upcoming events this summer! The golf course is where the idea for the Zippo lighter was born more than 80 years ago. While golfing at the Bradford Country Club, George G. Blaisdell noticed his friend struggling to use a European-made lighter on the course. Although the lighter worked well, it required two hands to use and its case was thin and easily damaged. Blaisdell set out to improve upon this design, and in 1932, he created his own lighter. Its signature design is very recognizable and still used today. Blaisdell’s lighter has a small rectangular case with a hinged lid that opens to reveal the original European chimney design. Unlike other lighters made in the 1930s, Blaisdell’s lighter could be operated with one hand and had a durable case designed to withstand frequent use. This modern design required a modern name; Blaisdell liked the sound of the word “zipper,” so he created his own variation, “Zippo,” for his lighter! As with any new invention, it took time for Blaisdell’s product to gain traction. To get it into the hands of more potential customers, Blaisdell was known for occasionally giving prototypes to area bus drivers who could show them to their passengers. Zippo/Case archives manager Shirley Evers identified just such a lighter last April when she was a guest on the popular History Channel show, Pawn Stars. Evers appeared on episode 5 of Season 14 to compare a customer’s lighter, believed to be a Zippo prototype from the 1930s, to other prototypes from the same decade. Evers successfully identified that this was, in fact, a genuine Zippo prototype and valued it at $3,500 to $4,000! Indeed, Zippo lighters are highly collectible, especially those from World War II when Blaisdell’s invention skyrocketed. In 1941, the Zippo plant (which was and still is located exclusively in Bradford) ceased production on lighters for consumer markets and manufactured lighters exclusively for the U.S. military. Zippo created the steel-case lighter with a black crackle finish for millions of American military personnel, thus making Zippo an American icon. According to Evers, one of the most popular exhibits at the museum is the Walter Nadler lighter, which was carried by a World War II soldier. In 1992, a Zippo lighter manufactured during World War II mysteriously turned up in a desk drawer in the Zippo archives, and had the following hand-etched on it: “June 6, 1944, 0630, France.” This discovery prompted an urgent search to find the owner of this lighter and understand its history! Unfortunately, the owner, Walter Nadler, had already passed away, but his family shared his miraculous story. While crossing the English Channel, Nadler etched his Zippo lighter before storming Utah Beach during the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944, D-Day. It had been lost in the sand during the invasion and assumed missing, along with its owner. Although Nadler’s wife received news of his death, she refused to believe it was true. Fortunately, at the end of the war, Nadler returned home very much alive, but his lighter remained lost until its discovery in 1992. This year, visitors can look forward to an enhanced military exhibit, which includes additional memorabilia donated in support of the Nadler lighter.

Visitors to the museum travel here from around the world - as far away as China and Europe! The museum’s military section is one of the most popular, as Zippo lighters have been carried into every war and conflict since WWII. Evers encourages visitors to experience the rich history at the museum, but also to appreciate the science behind the manufacturing. “Visitors of all ages are fascinated by ZAC, the audio-kinetic ball machine. Every time a ball is launched, it takes a different path, activating lights, chimes, or opening the giant lighter and knife. In the same exhibit room, there is a Case knife design that was included on all of the Apollo and Gemini moon missions,” said Evers. Each Zippo lighter is still made in the Bradford manufacturing facility, which is located just down the road from the museum. The company is still family-owned, as Blaisdell’s grandson, George Duke, is the sole owner and Chairman of the Board of Zippo. Many museum visitors are surprised to learn that Zippo still stands behind its famous guarantee that set Blaisdell apart from all other lighter manufacturers: “It works or we fix it for free.” Visitors can experience this guarantee firsthand: From 9:00am to 3:30pm each weekday, the Zippo Repair Clinic team restores lighters to working condition by replacing hinges and performing other repairs in the back of the museum. According to Evers, “Video tours of both Zippo and Case manufacturing processes are available in the museum, as well as clips from some of Zippo’s biggest moments on the silver screen.” That’s right, Zippo lighters have appeared in more than 2,000 films in every genre; Zippo lighters and Case knives have also appeared on countless primetime network and cable television shows over the decades. On Saturday, July 21st the museum will be hosting a special event to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Zippo and Case becoming sister companies. This event will be open to the public and will also celebrate the 20th birthday of the famous recreated Zippo car. In 1998, the museum created a replica of the famous 1947 Chrysler Saratoga, which Zippo purchased and designed to resemble the company’s lighter. “Productmobiles” such as this were famous for traveling the country in the 1940s and 1950s to promote different brands. The replica Zippo Car has been traveling the country since 1998, participating in parades, tradeshows, company-sponsored events and more, although home base is the Zippo/Case Museum. Also this summer, Zippo is sponsoring the Blaisdell Pro Am & Open at the Penhills Club in Bradford on July 23rd and 24th. The Blaisdell Pro Am is one of the premier club professional Pro Am Tournaments in North America, as participants compete for a $10,000 cash Pro purse and $20,000 Amateur purse on July 23. On July 24, PGA Club Professionals will participate in an 18-hole stroke-play Open for a $50,000 first place prize in the $100,000 Professional Purse Event. Registration is available online at blaisdellproam.com. The museum is also home to the Zippo/Case flagship store, a destination for all serious collectors. Evers explained that the museum is the only location in the world that carries every stock item in both Zippo and Case’s catalogs, plus exclusive collectibles not available anywhere else. In addition to shopping for Zippo and Case souvenirs and apparel, visitors can also design their own custom Zippo lighter, as well as get onsite engraving of select Zippo and Case products. The museum is free to visit and is open 7 days/week from 9:00am to 5:00pm Monday through Saturday, and 11:00am to 4:00pm Sunday. To learn more, visit www.zippo.com and follow Zippo on Facebook.

Walk the Tracks Across the Sky

FORE! GOLF NY / PA ~ 2018 ANNUAL GOLF & TRAVEL EDITION ... Page 29

Hidden deep within the forest of northwestern Pennsylvania is an engineering masterpiece The Kinzua Viaduct once soared 301 feet high and 2,053 feet across - it was the highest and longest railroad viaduct in the world By Linda Devlin, ANF Visitors Bureau

It was a bridge unlike any the world had ever seen. In 1882 General Thomas Kane, a Philadelphia lawyer, decorated American Civil War Veteran, and president of the New York, Lake Erie and Western Railroad and Coal Company, had rich coal deposits south of the Kinzua Gorge. But since his customers were to the north, Kane needed to cross the valley. Kane needed a bridge. Paris-born Octave Chanute, chief engineer for the Erie-Railroad, rose to the challenge. The man who would later help the Wright brothers fly had a bold solution - a bridge unlike any the world had seen.

to the masonry foundation piers. This design allowed lateral expansion in the tower legs under temperature loading. But his failure to replace the original 1882 anchor bolts would have catastrophic consequences. In July 2003, engineers and skilled bridge builders were hard at work on a $12 million repair project to reinforce the aging structure. The workers decided to call it a day when the sky went black and the winds rushed in. A tornado tore through the forest, heading straight for the Viaduct. Hundreds of trees were ripped from their roots and 11 of the bridge’s 20 towers were lifted, twisted and thrown onto the valley floor. Six towers remained standing on the south end; only three towers remained upright on the north end.

Chief Engineer Octave Chanute contracted the Pennsylvania firm of Clarke, Reeves & Company to design and fabricate the bridge. Adolphus Bonzano designed a wrought iron bridge using his “Phoenix Column,” an engineering breakthrough that enabled tall structures to resist vibration and buckling.

Engineers later confirmed that winds attacked in three directions. The original 1882 anchor bolts and collar coupling assemblies, which mated the old bolts to the later 1900 construction, had failed.

The bridge was pre-fabricated in Phoenixville, near Philadelphia, and transported to the site for erection. Once the sandstone foundation piers were in place, 125 men, working 10-hour days, completed the construction in just 94 days.

REINVENTED AS THE KINZUA SKYWALK

Standing 301 feet tall (24 feet higher than the Brooklyn Bridge) the Viaduct quickly became a tourist destination. Walking out on the bridge was the next best thing to flying. But by 1900, the locomotives and railroad cars hauling coal and timber across the Viaduct became larger and heavier. A stronger steel bridge was required. Using 6.7 million pounds of steel, workers erected a new bridge to replace the original.

Within 30 seconds, nature had brought the mighty span to its knees. The remaining six towers of the original Kinzua Viaduct were stabilized and reinvented as the Kinzua Sky Walk. Towering over the Kinzua Gorge, at a height of 225 feet and 624 feet long, the new skywalk has a partial glass floor overlook at the end of the pedestrian walkway which features the historic railroad tracks. Views are breathtaking. Opened to the public in September 2011, the Kinzua Sky Walk pays tribute to the past while emerging once again as an amazing engineering marvel.

THE KINZUA VIADUCT: A BRIEF HISTORY

ONE OF THE WORLD’S TOP 10 MOST SCENIC SKYWALKS

Not only was the Kinzua Viaduct successful in transporting Kane’s coal across the valley, it instantly became a popular tourist attraction bringing sightseers from around the globe to visit. Kinzua Bridge State Park, with the Kinzua viaduct as its centerpiece, was created in 1963. The Kinzua Viaduct was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, and the National Register of Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks in 1982.

The Kinzua Sky Walk was named as “One of the Top 10 Most Scenic Skywalks in the World” by The Culture Trip, U.K. Located at the Kinzua Bridge State Park in Mt. Jewett, Pennsylvania, the Kinzua Sky Walk is open to the public year round. Admission to the park and the Kinzua Sky Walk is free.

The Kinzua Viaduct spanned the Kinzua Gorge for more than a century before it partially collapsed under the powerful winds of a tornado in 2003.

THE POWER OF NATURE: TORNADO STRIKES JULY 21, 2003

Bridge designer C.R. Grimm predicted his creation would last 100 years. And he was right. Grimm’s design used roller expansion bearings where the tower legs were anchored

The park includes tree shaded picnic areas, areas for biking and birding, and a park pavilion which can be rented. In addition, there are two trails, the easy 1-mile General Kane trail, and a second more challenging trail, the Kinzua Creek Trail which leads to the bottom of the gorge where the fallen towers of the original viaduct still remain. The park is open from 8am to dusk each day. Driving address for the park is 296 Viaduct Road, Mt. Jewett, PA.
