“PUT THIS MOTHER / SON TEAM TO WORK FOR YOU!” By Megan E. Sorokes The secret to a faster, more enjoyable golf game is finally out! Just Tee It Forward. “This is very much a joint cooperative effort between the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) of America and the United States Golf Association (USGA),” Bob Baldassari, PGA, Director, Youth Golf Development said, noting that the two organizations worked closely for the 2011 campaign launch. “It was an awareness campaign more than a program. We have some programs, like Get Golf Ready, that are more structured, but Tee It Forward is more flexible so facilities can implement it. It then became an awareness campaign to say, ‘Are you playing to the correct length golf hole?’” Jane Eshbaugh, Director of Marketing at Holiday Valley Resort added, “The idea is to encourage people to bring friends and learn to golf - to expand the market.” Baldassari said the credit for Tee It Forward can be given to Barney Adams, inventor of the Tight Lies® fairway wood and recipient of the 2010 PGA Ernie Sabayrac Award for his contributions to the golf industry. “The genesis of Tee It Forward came from Barney,” he said. “It was his thinking after he saw people he played golf with and studied during the game becoming frustrated because they wanted to play the furthest length, took too long to play and had high scores. The idea was to help people realize that if they played a tee commensurate with their abilities, as they play, they would hit the appropriate club to the appropriate surface on each hole, and the game would be more enjoyable. Many golfers see tour players and want to play like tour players, and that can be frustrating.”

Eshbaugh added, “It’s the mentality that it is OK to not play the longest tee on every hole, or to take the most difficult tee. We want golfers to know it’s alright to move the ball up so you have a better score and play the round in a shorter time. It’s promoting a better experience.” Steve Carney, PGA Golf Professional and Director of Summer Operations and Golf at Holiday Valley, said Tee It Forward is available to anyone who is interested, including beginner golfers. “The goal of Tee It Forward is to educate and allow players to play the course at a length that more closely fits their ability,” he said. “I would recommend it to all golfers.” Baldassari agreed, noting that both seasoned golfers and beginners will benefit from the initiative, as long as they are open to the concept of Tee It Forward. “The seasoned golfer has been set in their ways,” he said. “It may be that someone who is between 50 and 70 years old has played a lot, and still wants to play the length of the course played when they were in their 20s or 30s. If they don’t hit as far, they become frustrated, their scores may be higher, so they don’t play as much or they stop playing. We certainly want to change that course of action.” For younger golfers, just starting out, Baldassari said the key is education, or instruction with an experienced golfer. “The hope is that they are getting good advice, but more importantly, taking lessons or participating in Get Golf Ready to learn the appropriate golf technique and tees to play,” he said. The fun extends beyond the golfers to the golf professionals and instructors as well. For Baldassari, the positive response from the participants makes all the difference. “It’s the excitement in someone’s voice when they’re enjoying the game that I appreciate most,” he said. “I love to see it when ‘the lightbulb goes off’ and golfers realize they have the opportunity to hit the ball onto the green.”

“Tee It Forward is an everyday thought process,” he continued. “It’s every day in the fabric of golf. It’s understanding that golfers are still going to be challenged at golf through Tee It Forward, but that we’re going to get you to a tee that is giving you a good chance of knocking the ball on the green and playing the game the way the course designer would like.”

Golfing In a Ski Town

Welcome to Holiday Valley Resort and Conference Center Four Season Resort of Ellicottville, New York Boasts Black Diamonds in Both Winter and Summer

By Megan E. Sorokes The newly redesigned 18-hole, par 70 ‘Double Black Diamond’ golf course at Holiday Valley Resort in Ellicottville, New York is slated to open April 12, 2014 and boasts awesome elevations, and many creeks and ravines. “We also have a practice facility with 200 yards of grass tee and nine covered areas for practice, even if it’s raining,” said PGA Master Professional Steve Carney, Director of Summer Operations and Golf at Holiday Valley Resort. It’s no wonder golfers enjoy Holiday Valley’s 6,500-yard course … the incredible scenery, challenging play, and laidback atmosphere make this four season resort a top destination that brings many back year after year. The layout of the course itself is unique, as part of it is on the ski slope. Kristen Sciara, of Holiday Valley’s marketing team, highlight the importance of the 2008 redesign by Golf Course Architect Paul Albanese and the yearly course improvements carried out by Carney and Superintendent Bill Burford. “The redesign and improvements resulted in enhanced fairways and turf, improved water hazards and devilish bunkers. The four sets of tees for each hole can challenge low handicappers from back tees, or allow for faster play for less experienced players from the shorter tees. It’s a great place to play for a refreshing change of pace.” The course, which will remain open through Oct. 31, 2014, weather permitting, is a popular choice for group outings, special events, and various programs throughout the season, including business conferences, retreats, families, charities, and leagues. “We have anywhere from 5 to 8 outings weekly with groups ranging from 20 to 144 players,” Carney said. “Any size group is welcome.” … and at a good rate, too! Holiday Valley’s Group Outing Package costs a mere $63 a person, which includes 18 holes of golf and cart, three dinner options to choose from, and all tournament amenities. For people who want to host a fundraiser or plan a corporate outing, it’s a really great deal!

FORWARD PROGRESS ...

Looking to get into the game? Holiday Valley has clinics, camps and lessons for all ages. “We have three PGA qualified instructors, and we offer a very private learning environment,” Carney said. “It’s a game of a lifetime, so take lessons, have fun, and keep trying.” For junior golfers, ages 7-18, Holiday Valley offers a special golf camp in July to facilitate learning the game, as well as a golf program throughout July and August. Holiday Valley is also an ambassador of the Mel Sole Golf School, which offers three-day clinics that focus on long and short game skills, covering everything from full swing, to chipping and putting, to pitching and bunkers. Mel Sole, a native of South Africa, founded the original golf school in 1990 with his mentor, Phil Ritson. Headquartered in South Carolina, the school boasts several locations, coming to Holiday Valley about eight years ago. In a recent interview with FORE! GOLF, Sole said, “Students who come through the Mel Sole Golf School say this program is comprehensive but easy to understand. We keep it simple for golfers with high handicaps, but for those with low handicaps, we can get into what they need to do as well.” Golf Magazine has ranked the Mel Sole Golf School among the top five golf schools in the

U.S. … just one of six that has remained on the list since it started publishing rankings in 1999. Sole gave us some insight on the 3-day clinic: “Day one is the mental side of golf, and very few schools touch on that,” Sole said. “It’s important for the student to understand - subconsciously and consciously - so they comprehend why we’re giving them drills the way we are.” Participants also learn their personality profile to help understand individual learning style. “If we can identify the learning style, we can teach in that style to speed up the learning process,” Sole explained. “The rest of the time is spent working on swings, video, and review learning what a golfer does well, doesn’t do well, and what drills are needed to improve.” Participants in the Mel Sole Golf School at Holiday Valley can rest assured that they are learning from a professional with over 20 years of experience instructing and mentoring golfers. His name: James Arbogast. He is dedicated to teaching golf, and that’s all he does while at Holiday Valley during golf season. There’s a lot of personal attention given, and at the end of three days, golfers can compare their first day swing to their swing at the end of the program, so that they can see first-hand, their improvements as a result of the schooling. To arrange a clinic this season at Holiday Valley, contact Mel Sole instructor James Arbogast directly at 616-307-2872.

MAKE IT A VACATION

Of course, a unique benefit to Holiday Valley’s Golf Course is the ability for golfers to turn an outing into a vacation! Golfers can stay at one of two hotels on Holiday Valley grounds, or at one of 300 condos managed by Holiday Valley Realty Co. Packages offer an all-inclusive price for all your needs. “The Tamarack Club is Holiday Valley’s newest four-star, course-side condominium and hotel,” said Kristen Sciara of Holiday Valley’s marketing department, explaining that the club also offers fractional ownership of condos, and has become a mainstay for vacationers in the area. Amenities available at the Tamarack include heated indoor and outdoor pools, two outdoor hot tubs, a fitness room with cardio and strength equipment, a full service spa, on-site restaurant, underground and valet parking, bell staff, and shuttle service to all Holiday Valley base lodges. John Harvard’s Brew House, located right inside the Tamarack, offers room service to guests staying there. Harvard’s boasts 24 different beers on tap, as well as a collection of scotches. The restaurant recently welcomed a new chef to its staff, Brian Kiendl, who has a Grand Diploma in the Arts from the French Culinary Institute in New York. “He’s made significant changes to the entrees,” said Sciara. “The standbys are still around, but he’s brought a new dimension - new American cooking with different specials. It’s a great place to eat, have a beer, and there’s a good vibe.” John Harvard’s is open for lunch and dinner daily. For more information, call 716-699-5350. Additional information about the Tamarack Club and reservations is available online or by calling 800-323-0020 or 716-699-2345. Just remember, golfer or not, Holiday Valley Resort and the village of Ellicottville offer something for everyone. “A lot of times, not everyone plays golf, but there is so much more to do,” Sciara said. “From our Sky High adventure park to mountain biking, downtown Ellicottville, or the spas, there’s an activity for everyone to enjoy.” If you’re looking for fun on the fairways, or just a great getaway, check out Holiday Valley on the web at www.holidayvalley.com.

FORE! GOLF ~ 2014 SEASON ~ SHOW EDITION ... Page 07

... and then some Take Advantage of All Holiday Valley and Ellicottville Have to Offer By Pat Morgan It’s safe to say if you’re reading this publication, you’re well aware of the ski resort prowess Holiday Valley and HoliMont bring to the table. Both are pioneers in their respective categories (public/private resorts), which continue to re-invest in their properties and the community of Ellicottville annually. But, should you find yourself visiting town in the “off-season,” you don’t need to worry about finding something to do. Many of you may be visiting us for the fantastic local golf courses, however when you’re done, be sure to see why the summer months are very much an “on-season” here in the village and surrounding areas. Need proof? Here we go …

Test your skills at Sky High, or experience the thrill of the Mountain Coaster

SKY HIGH ADVENTURE PARK

One of the most popular attractions bringing people to town these days is the Sky High Adventure Park at Holiday Valley, now in its third season of operation. Speaking from experience, this park is AWESOME. $48 gets you suited up into a harness that initially leaves you a bit confused how the whole process is going to go, yet after a thorough explanation and safety briefing by the Sky High staff, you’re off to the park. Multiple courses of different abilities await - from the novice lower level courses to the intimidating sounding “Commando” course. This course is no joke, and is a true feeling of accomplishment (if you can complete it). For the upcoming season, Holiday Valley has added yet another course to the park, a ‘black’ level course. This follows up last summer’s addition, which Holiday Valley dubbed the “3-D Climbing Forest.” The climbing forest consists of bouldering holds affixed to trees up to 60’ in height and varying difficulty, which can provide a challenge to even the most skilled climber. Rates start at just $15 for this part of the park. Unwind a bit after you tackle the courses with a ride down the fun-for-all-ages mountain coaster, and you’ve covered all your bases. I can guarantee you will leave Sky High exhausted and smiling. Given the popularity of the park, I suggest you call them ahead of time at 716-699-4444 to make a reservation.

MUDSLIDE

CHOOSE YOUR TRAIL

One of the other great secrets of the region is the incredible mountain biking trails found between Holiday Valley and HoliMont, as well as the surrounding hilly, forested terrain. Challenging single track mixed with a variety of other terrain is just one of the reasons the IMBA has went as far as to label the trails in the area “EPIC.” Make sure you pop into Bike & Bean located in the village to get the ‘locals knowledge’ or to participate in one of their weekly shop rides on the local trails. With over 35 miles of trails locally, you’re sure to find something that is up your alley, and you will certainly see why people come from far, far away to hit the trails here. When you’re finished, take a dip in Spruce Lake between the two resorts, or go for a refreshing dip and cocktail at the lively Holiday Valley pool complex and Cabana Bar.

SLEEP IT OFF: YOUR HOME AWAY FROM HOME

After all these activities, you may be exhausted and decide not to make the trek home, or perhaps you want to do it all over again the next day. The good news is, there are plenty of lodging options available for you to check into! Holiday Valley certainly has its share of options between their condos and hotels, but if you’re looking for something a little closer to the village … For a bed & breakfast feel full of character and charm, give a shout over to the Ilex Inn B&B. Inkeepers Rick and Glenda offer multiple comfortable and private rooms to select from (and a gourmet breakfast to boot!) The backyard year-round hot tub, seasonal in-ground heated swimming pool and patio lounge are there for all guests to enjoy. Head to ilexinn.com. If you prefer a more traditional hotel experience, the Wingate By Wyndham will not disappoint. With 84 rooms ranging from a traditional hotel room to a 2-room suite, as well as amenities like an indoor pool and hot tub, they’ve got accommodations for any taste. Book online at ellicottvillewingateinn.com or call 716-699-6000.

FESTIVALS ON THE SLOPES AND IN THE VILLAGE

Chances are, there will be something special going on in Ellicottville each and every time you visit. Along with the notorious array of shops, bars and restaurants, Ellicottville plays host to a slew of festivals and celebrations throughout the spring and summer months. Among the largest is the Summer Music Festival, which brings in major recording artists to entertain the masses on a slopeside amphitheater at Holiday Valley over the July 4th weekend. Another personal favorite of mine is the annual Taste of Ellicottville held each August, which gives local restaurants the chance to show off samplings of their staple entrees or venture into uncharted territory with some off-the-wall creations. But to kick off the coming season’s calendar, Holiday Valley will play host to a new event midApril, labeled the Enchanted Mountain Music Festival. Plan to take in some great bluegrass and roots music concerts and workshops featuring top rated bluegrass bands (and maybe get in a quick round of 9 on the golf course while you’re here.) Come June, even more excitement hits Ellicottville with Cycling Weekend, the Dirty Duathlon/Dirty Bit Trail Run, and the always muddy-fun Mudslide Obstacle Race. Wait, there’s more … the World Championships of the International Bowhunting Organization returns to Holiday Valley in August, Rock’N Roll Weekend consumes the downtown area in September, and of course everyone’s favorite event, Fall Festival, which literally completely transforms Ellicottville into a mass celebration of the approaching winter season, will take place in October. Beer tents, vendors, music, and of course the brilliant fall foliage we look forward to annually can be expected, so put on those party pants and stamp it on your calendar, or click on over to www.ellicottvilleny.com and www.holidayvalley.com to learn more about all of the year’s events.

Take a stop into A Touch of Ellicottville - they’ve got everything Ellicottville you could want - from those aforementioned decals, to apparel and wall hangings. The charm of the town comes to life in this store, so why not bring a piece of it back with you? Right next door on Washington (Main) Street, you’ll find Bike & Bean, where you’re likely to see Dennis inside tuning up mountain bikes and road cycles, brought to them because they’re the best of the best. Hungry while you’re waiting on that tune-up? Let Rachel treat those tastebuds with one of their delicious, organic burritos, complete with all the fixings. They’ve recently added salads, smoothies and other items to their menu, all boasting a local and health focus. With a great array of components, clothing, bikes, as well as knowledge of the local trails and roadways (and now one of the best taste treats in town), this truly is one stop shopping at its finest. Not your cup of tea yet? Don’t worry, there’s more …

Bike & Bean: “Clean Fuel + Exercise = Happy People”

Looking for something you didn’t even know you were looking for? Ellicottville is perfect for this. Stores like The Holiday Shoppe, Tangled Twigs, Earth Arts, Kazoo II and Alexandra all have helped me come up with the ‘forgotten anniversary/birthday’ problem many of us young (and old) males experience frequently. Cards, candles, frames, crafts, fixtures, books and art are just some of the things you’ll be able to browse through to find something that is just right for the occasion. Although on paper you may be thinking you can get this stuff anywhere, the fact of the matter is the items in these stores are carefully selected to be rich in character, feel and originality which you won’t find in just any old “this & that” store. A quick skip across the street will showcase even more of the retailers who make up the melting pot of Ellicottville. A step into Daff Dry Goods will take you into a different feel altogether, presenting you with what I would call “cowgirl/cowboy chic,” with clothing, footwear and jewelry all with that southwestern outdoors feel. If this isn’t the look you’re going for, Après is just a few doors down, with high-end seasonal fashions for young and old alike. Had enough of clothing? We haven’t even scratched the surface yet.

Feel good, look good: Nature’s Remedy and neighboring shop, Gado Gado

Many who visit town marvel at some of the unique home décor notorious for our area, like the antler chandeliers or reclaimed barnboard furniture. Lucky for you, the search for “where the heck did they get that?” is over. Pop your head into Aardvark and check out their offerings, and chat with their team who has searched far and wide to put these great pieces together. After your arms are tired from carrying all of those boxes, bags and decorative pieces you’ve gathered on your journey, it’s time to focus on you and your wellness. A hidden gem here in Ellicottville is Nature’s Remedy, which provides natural and organic supplements, whole foods, as well as teas, oils, eco-friendly cleaning products, and books to educate yourself on putting it all into motion. A quick walk through the adjoining hallway, and you’ll quickly find yourself in Gado Gado, immersed in some of the most unique clothing and accessories one can find here in Ellicottville. One could say the selection is “worldly,” to put it simply. Finally, what better mid-day treat than a quick (or long) massage or body treatment from the crew over at Ellicottville Oasis. This popular (and extremely relaxing) day spa has the ability to ease your mind and that aching neck and back which you may have indured while golfing. If you happen to be strolling down Monroe Street, you can also check out Anew Beginning Massage & Spa, where owners/ operators Dan and Leah can often be found curbside giving chair massages throughout the summer months and festival weekends.

HUNGRY YET?

Just when you thought you didn’t have enough hard-pressed decisions to make on what to buy, now comes the tough part about where to eat in Ellicottville. There is no shortage of choices here in the village, so pull up a chair (or a stool if you’re on that liquid diet) and let’s figure out what’s next … During that quick jaunt around town, you undoubtedly saw the sights and perhaps experienced the smells of our bar and restaurant community. The challenge is picking exactly what it is you’re looking for, so why be choosy … check them all out. Many people who come to Ellicottville make it a mandatory line item to visit EBC (Ellicottville Brewing Company) for that perfect pint. With approximately a dozen craft brewed beers on tap, there’s certainly something you’ll enjoy, or to wash down one of their enormous burgers with. You may have noticed something looks a little different about EBC since your last visit, and that’s because there is A LOT different about their new facility. Increased seating capacity, incredible finishing touches and details greet those who enter, with an all-new menu and brewing facility for you to feast your eyes on during your visit. Book a guided tour of their new and improved facility by logging onto www. ellicottvillebrewing.com. Looking for something a little more “grab and go” or a bit on the lighter side? Hoagies is just up the street, and as Ellicottville’s #1 pizzeria, what would your stop be without scoring a slice or a sandwich. Another “can’t miss” stop in Ellicottville is local favorite, Katy’s Café, which serves up one of the best breakfast burritos in town, and some of the best daily lunch specials as well. If you want to score some points with the kids or significant other (fellas), don’t forget they’re also the go-to spot for soft serve ice cream in the village! There are also countless places in Ellicottville to pull up a stool and watch your favorite golf match or ball game, while enjoying a little something to eat. The Barn, Balloons, Gin Mill, and John Harvard’s Brew House all have a variety of man-cave certified televisions and the appropriate satellite packages to make sure you don’t miss your sporting event of choice. Looking for something a bit more refined? May I strongly suggest The Silver Fox Steakhouse or Dina’s - both feature menu items that touch on a more worldly feel, and some extensive wine lists for that perfect pairing. The Silver Fox spotlights cuts of meat from another one of the best kept secrets in town, Dom’s Butcher Block, located in the Washington Square complex. Speaking of Dom’s, they have an all-new smoker in-house now, thus ensuring that “they only smoke the best” … meats, that is. Whether you’re looking for the freshest cuts of meat, oils, fish or bread, Dom’s has your entire meal covered!

WHAT HAPPENS IN EVL, STAYS IN EVL

Often called the drinking town with a skiing problem, Ellicottville is also notorious for its nightlife, whether it’s ski season or golf season! Believe it or not, EVL has even earned recognition in several ski and snowboard magazines as one of the top ten towns of its kind

in North America, rivaling towns like Whistler and Breckenridge. You’ll find the streets lined with motorcycles in the spring, summer and fall months as well, as Ellicottville is often a stop on many of the scenic rides and runs through the southern tier. From patio parties at Madigan’s, to the dance floor mayhem of Balloons, or the acoustic rock ‘n roll at the Gin Mill, there is ALWAYS something going on. If you’re looking to call it an early night and take the party back to your chalet or hotel room, head to the Village Wine Rack, now located adjacent to Kwik Fill (across from Tops) for a bottle of vino and all the other liquid salvation needs you may be experiencing. If you’re on foot in the immediate village area, may we also suggest stopping in at the Winery of Ellicottville, who have quickly built a great reputation amongst regional vintners in the region, and offer a fantastic selection of reds, whites, and blues!

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK

Just as the seasons change here in Ellicottville, so does the retail and restaurant landscape. If it’s been some time since you’ve last visited, we’ve seen a couple of shops change locations, a few businesses expand upward and outward, and an entirely new plaza spring up where there was previously nothing. Let’s see what you’ve missed: Speaking of that new plaza … here is where we find two of the newest businesses in Ellicottville, the first of which is the all new EVL Cheese Company, which conveniently is just a couple doors down from the Village Wine Rack (brilliant!) With its origins dating back to the 1800’s, the root of this newcomer is the Cuba Cheese Shoppe, which has built quite a reputation for some of the highest quality cheeses around. With distribution of their 300+ products now finding shelf space in 140 storefronts around the region, it was only a matter of time before Ellicottville became a final destination for the brand. If you haven’t already exhausted your shopping urge, we need to also mention one of the newest boutiques in town, Nouriche, located just a few doors down from the Gin Mill. Just when you think there couldn’t possibly be a new angle of clothing and offerings here in the village, newcomers Jessica and Rachel will wow you with their carefully selected array of mostly women’s attire, accessories, toys, small home furnishings, and other unique items. Even if you’re simply “kicking the tires” browsing what they have, one can easily appreciate the finishing touches that decorate the interior of this storefront. Last but not least, is perhaps the newest and most surprising addition to the Ellicottville area - the all new EVL Ink Tattoo & Apparel tattoo studio, owned and operated by Vinny Bielli. Located in the same plaza as the Village Wine Rack and EVL Cheese Company, the amount of traffic in and out of Bielli’s studio has been beyond impressive. Perhaps it’s the allure of the clothing and accessories he has for sale, or perhaps it’s the fact that he is an incredibly talented tattoo artist … one thing is for certain, it’s worth popping by to check out, introduce yourself, or better yet: schedule an appointment! So there you have it folks … way too many places to go and things to do, in not nearly enough time. I guess that means you’ll just have to come back again, won’t you? Find plenty of literature about Ellicottville, by visiting the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce website at www.ellicottvilleny.com. Thanks for reading, and happy exploring!

Play the Scenic Hills The Pennhills Club: Bradford, Pennsylvania

One of McKean County’s Must-Play Courses is this 18-Hole Championship Layout Designed by Walter J. Travis in the 1920’s By Megan Sorokes With its championship golf course and majestic brick and slate clubhouse, The Pennhills Club is among the area’s must-play courses. “There are many people who travel here, stay and enjoy playing the course,” Dave Talon, golf course superintendent said. “We’re surrounded by mountains. They’re all around. It’s pretty as a picture, a beautiful time to play golf.” Talon added that golfers play the course for various reasons, noting a few unique features that distinguish Pennhills from other locations. “The thing that attracts golfers to us is that we have the undulation in the fairways,” he said. “There are changes and subtle breaks. When they’re rolling fast, they can be the toughest greens around.” The Pennhills Club opened in 1936 with the merging of the Country Club of Bradford and North Penn Club. Kevin Mosher, The Pennhills Club’s general manager, said Walter Travis, a world-renowned architect, designed the 18-hole course with its elevated fairways and challenging greens. He said another notable architect, Clifford C. Wendehack, built the clubhouse in 1936 in less than a year. “They broke ground to build the clubhouse in September 1936, and we opened in June 1937,” Mosher said, noting that the club offers many amenities including a swimming pool and fine dining. “We also do wedding receptions, averaging 15 to 20 a year.” Last season, Pennhills Club constructed a new and improved practice facility, and they also welcomed a new PGA Golf Profressional, Jake Northrup. A native of neighboring Ellicottville, NY, Northrup is a graduate from the Professional Golf Management (PGM) Program at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, NM, and has since been a PGM member employed at high-end clubs in multiple sections all over the country. Northrup brings years of experience of providing high quality service and leadership to all roles of the position. However, one of his biggest focuses at The Pennhills Club is its junior golf programming. “I didn’t start golfing seriously until I was a senior in high school, and I now have the opportunity to pass my gift along to the youth and provide them with the opportunity to become good at a young age,” Northrup exclaimed. All of the Junior Golf programs at Pennhills are open to members and the public, including After School clinics, Monkey Golf, and the PGA Sports Academy, a five-day, all-inclusive golf camp for Junior Golfers, complete with golf instruction and range, meals and time at the Pennhills swimming pool. Pennhills is also the home of numerous tournaments, such as the Zippo Open and Can-Am Challenge, a competition between Canadian and American golfers. Mosher said the CanAm Challenge is one of the club’s biggest tournaments. Various golf and getaway packages are available at Pennhills throughout the summer season and into the fall. For more information on The Pennhills Club, its memberships or packages, please call 814-368-6159. The Pennhills Club is located at 146 Pennhills Drive, Bradford, PA 16701.

Cardinal Hills Golf Course: Randolph, New York Gentle Rolling Hills and Undulations Provide an Enjoyable yet Challenging Golf Experience; New Summer Rates for 2014 By Megan Sorokes Old growth maple trees and beautiful scenic views in a natural, rural setting make Cardinal Hills Golf Course a one-of-a-kind, premier golf destination in Western New York. Located just two miles off Interstate 86 (exit 16), Cardinal Hills is easily accessible to golfers from all over the region. “It has a classic feel to it,” said Eric Brown, general manager of Cardinal Hills, located in Randolph. “We have some major change in elevation, so when you get to the top (of some hills), it’s almost a 360-degree view and it’s pretty panoramic.” E.A. Keith opened Cardinal Hills in July 1928 with a nine-hole layout. In the late 1960s, Sam Abbott developed it into the 18-hole, par-72 course that exists today. Yardage ranges from 6,109 at the back tees to 5,605 at the front tees. “All the holes are rated by handicap. The number one handicap is usually the hardest hole, and ours is a par 5,” Brown said. “The hole is number two with 490 yards. A lot of people comment that it’s a beautiful hole to play.” Jared Mazzant, an Aero-Thermo engineer at Dresser-Rand Company in Olean, NY, said the layout of the course is one reason he enjoys golfing at Cardinal Hills. “The layout is great,” Mazzant said. “There are a good multitude of different types of par 3s, 4s and 5s as in short, long, tight, open, straight or dog-legged. There is a good mix of hazards and bunkers.” Cardinal Hills Golf Course, its clubhouse and amenities are open to the public, and even offers a junior course available in July for a variety of ages. “We have between 60 and 70 kids that sign up for the junior course. It’s pretty impressive,” Brown said, noting that the youngest participants are four to five years old and the oldest are 16 or 17 years old. On the first Tuesday in August, the young golfers play in a tournament against their age group. Additional amenities at Cardinal Hills include pro shop merchandise, dining at the clubhouse and a relaxed bar atmosphere. Weekend, weekday and senior rates are available. Watch for their new summer rates to be advertised on their website soon! For more information, call Cardinal Hills at 716-358-5409 or visit the course website at www.cardinalhillsny.com.

POPULAR NEARBY COURSES Concord Crest Golf Course: East Concord, New York

Tee It Up at this Family Owned and Operated Golf Course, Known for its Top-Notch Customer Service By Kimberly Nobles If you travel up the 219 from Ellicottville a little ways and veer off about 3 miles from the Expressway, you’ll find yourself teeing it up at Concord Crest Golf Course. This excellent family-run facility boasts fantastic customer service and offers something for everyone. Located in East Concord, NY, the course was designed and built by the owners and opened for business with 9 holes back in 2001. Since then, the business has seen a tremendous amount of capital improvement … In 2004 they added the back 9 to complete an 18-hole golf course. Due to the ever-increasing Youth Instruction, they added a 3-hole practice facility - perfect for all ages who want to work on improving their game. In 2008 the Concord House was added, which provided a place for up to 200 people to enjoy an after outing dinner. In 2010 they added on to the Clubhouse for additional space. Owner Gail Ploetz explained, “As you can see, we are always making improvements and putting money back into the course.” So true. Over the last 13 years, Concord Crest Golf Course certainly has seen a lot of expansion! The golf course employs more than 20 seasonal workers, which Gail and her husband say it is the employees who they really owe their success to. The couple continually receives praise for how wonderful and accommodating their staff is, many of them saying that Concord Crest has the best customer service in the area! Gail’s husband and son act as groundskeepers for the golf course. The two, along with the team of employees, help to keep the course in tip-top shape. Four sets of tees aid in accommodating everyone, color coded from blues which are in the back, to golds which are out front. This ensures that no matter what your age or skill level, you can enjoy your day! Concord Crest also offer complete outing packages which include lunch, dinner and golf. (Find online specials all summer long on their website, www.concordcrest. com, where you can sign up to receive special offers via email or facebook.) Concord Crest also offers free birthday greens fee on your birthday and complementary golf to anyone over 90. New this year is their Junior Golf Camp, which they are very excited to roll out. If you are looking for a fun, family friendly place to play golf this year, check out Concord Crest Golf Course. The course re-opens for the season on April 15. Keep tabs on the web, or give them a call at 716-592-7636.

Test Your Short Game Skills at Mystic Water Resort 18-Hole Championship Course Offers More than Just Golf ... Make it a Family Escape with Rental Cabins, Pavilion & Many On-site Activities By Dash Hegeman Western New York has an assorted selection of golf courses. With the combination of its plush, green rolling hills and its wide-open landscapes, this area offers a magnitude of golfing opportunities that can challenge even the most seasoned of golfers. But what if you’re in the mood for something a little easier in the golfing stratosphere … maybe something that would make for a good date night … or that the entire family can enjoy? Well, then you are probably talking about miniature golf and in that case your options are limited. Luckily for you there is a solution. Snuggly nestled in between Salamanca, NY and Bradford, PA sits Limestone, NY, home of Mystic Water Resort. Conveniently located on the edge of a scenic 20-acre lake, Mystic Water Resort offers a variety of family entertainment options. Known throughout Western New York for its serene location, this unique facility is much more than just a miniature golf destination. Situated within the grounds are rental cabins that one would be hard-pressed to classify as “roughing-it” in terms of camping accommodations. Each cabin is capable of comfortably sleeping four people and comes with a furnished living room, two bedrooms (one with a Queen size bed and one with bunk beds), a fire pit and charcoal grill. A fully equipped kitchen also allows guests all the conveniences of modern living even though the view outside the window depicts nothing but old-fashioned country living. Owned and operated by Bill and Karla Rounsville, a very energetic couple, Mystic Water Resort started off as a driving range 14 years ago when Bill thought it would be fun to put his waterfront property to use while allowing golf fanatics to work on their swing. After some initial issues of finding floating golf balls, the Rounsvilles were on track for a newfound labor of love. Soon after the aquatic driving range opened, the Rounsvilles began talking about building the miniature golf course. But they knew that if they were going to go that route they would have to go all in. Using their property, which at one point was a horse pasture, they began building cabins around the lake and they expanded by building a rustic pavilion not too far from the lake. Over the years the pavilion received some additions as business started to expand. Before they knew it, Bill and Karla were renting out the grounds for birthday parties, graduations, corporate outings, reunions and even weddings. The miniature golf course is an 18-hole championship facility that is sure to test the short game skill-set of even the most accomplished golfer while still providing plenty of fun for kids of all ages. Fusing a perfect blend of natural grass, floral, shrubs, water, and hand-laid stone, a group of local landscapers constructed a course that is as pleasing visually as it is to play on. And as far as degree of difficulty is concerned, you will quickly learn that this course is no pushover. The course was developed in such a manner that on a fair number of the holes, if you are not careful, you will find your ball rolling right back to you. One of the many great things about Western New York is that it’s an area where you can start off with a lakeside driving range and before you know it you have an affordable year-round destination resort for the entire family. For more information on Mystic Water Resort, check them out on the web at www.mysticwaterresort.com or call 716-925-8553.

That is how FlightScope came to be. With additional sports forthcoming, FlightScope now has

By Spencer Timkey Golf is a unique sport. You may be playing in a foursome, but it’s your individual score that counts. You might be able to run a 4.5 in the 40-yard dash, but that doesn’t mean you’re good within 40 yards of the green. It’s a mental game of inches … the 6 inches between your ears. One might think that a golf club is just a golf club; that, because a driver is $100 more than another, it means you’ll instantly become Tiger Woods off the tee. This perception couldn’t be farther from the truth. Enter Rick’s Golf World in Olean, NY. Helping golfers find the right clubs since 1990, it’s a full-service shop that should be a destination for any golfer serious about their swing. With name brands such as Taylor Made, Ping, Puma, Cobra, Callaway, Titleist and FootJoy, owner Pete Lisi has built the business into the reputable one it is today. One of the coolest features offered by any shop in the area, the FlightScope system (on-site at Rick’s Golf World) uses radar to track the actual flight of the golf ball after your swing. Developed by South African electronics engineer Henri Johnson in 1989, FlightScope uses a Doppler radar system to record your ball movement, backspin, flight path, club head speed/ angle and much more. The company originally (and currently still) develops defense radar systems for countries around the world. Lisi bought the system in February 2013 and said it’s been an instant success. With ample space inside the shop for a “BIG” swing cage, the customer doesn’t feel like he or she is

swinging the club in a closet. A 210” diagonal screen allows customers to watch where their ball goes after they hit it. This system tracks the ball and swing separately, which gives Lisi improved ability to work with his customers to find them the perfect club. Here’s how it works: a customer can come in and try a bunch of different clubs (specifically, drivers). After the customer hits a couple balls off of different drivers, he’ll pull up a screen that shows the different clubs’ “angle of attack” and “carry distance” - so if someone is hitting a Callaway driver 10 yards further and straighter than a Taylor Made one, then they’ve found the winner. Fitting is $50, but Lisi will knock that off the retail price if the customer so chooses to purchase it. The FlightScope system is also good for ‘club gapping’. Lisi explains it this way: “Let’s say you hit your 3-wood 240 yards and your 4-iron 190. We need to find you a club that you can hit at that consistent 200-210 yard range. The customer can try out some hybrids or different clubs to find that sweet spot.” There are different camera-based systems that take individual photographs of the ball’s flight path, but FlightScope is only one of two that actually implements a radar system to track it. Rick’s Golf World is a full-service shop that offers regripping, fitting and anything else a golfer could ask for. If you want to really figure out the best clubs to buy, don’t buy them from some website because they’re cheaper. Head to Rick’s, get the best bang for your buck and support a small business. Rick’s Golf World is open year-round. Pop into the shop, 228 N.Union St., Olean, NY 14760, or give Pete a shout at 716-373-6400.

Good Idea Bad Idea: Golf Course Edition Taking 15 Practice Swings Before Every Shot ... Bad Idea! When Play Moves Along Smoothly, Everyone Stays Happy By Spencer Timkey Warmer months are undoubtedly on their way, and soon we’ll all be getting after our favorite activities. That includes heading to the golf course and channeling our inner Rory. Yes, golf is an awesome, super-fun thing to do in the summer with your friends. But to help with your pace of play (how fast you’re moving from hole-to-hole) and to keep everyone else on the course as stoked as you, let’s go through Good Idea, Bad Idea: Golf Course Edition. Bringing multiple clubs with you to your ball so you don’t have to walk back to the cart. It may only seem like 15 or 20 seconds, but this time adds up after an entire round. Taking multiple clubs with you (for example, if you’re within 50 yards of the green, take a pitching wedge and your putter) cuts down on wasteful time. Bringing multiple clubs with you to your ball: Good Idea! Stopping for lunch at the turn (when you finish the front 9 and are about to start the back 9) keeps the group behind you waiting. Plan ahead and make a sandwich, or call the pro shop when you’re on the 7th hole so your lunch is ready to go when you get there. Making people wait because you want a burger and fries before you start the back 9: Bad Idea! Playing ready golf (hitting the ball when you’re ready to hit it) will drastically improve your pace of play. Listen, this isn’t The Tour. Unless you’re playing in a sanctioned tournament, you can go ahead and hit the ball before the person that has ‘the honors.’ No one is going to

care - especially the group behind you. Playing ready golf: Good Idea! You know what really grinds the gears of course professionals everywhere? People that don’t show up on time for their tee-times. You wouldn’t show up late to work, would you? Think about all of the people you’re holding up when you walk in at 9:15 for a 9:00 o’clock time. Showing up late for your tee time: Bad Idea! Bringing your own clubs to most courses is both a) required, and b) required. You know what happens when you share clubs? Your group takes forever. Most pro shops have the option for you to rent clubs for the round, and many times it’s going to be relatively cheap. But when you’re on one end of the fairway and your cart-mate is on the other and you both need the 7-iron, it’s going to waste time. Bringing your own clubs: Good Idea! We all want to be on The Tour. But let’s look at reality, folks. Most of us will not be heading to Augusta for a chance at the green jacket. Getting limbered up before you hit is cool, but no one requires 15 practice swings before every single shot. All that does is keep both the group you’re playing with and the group behind you irritated. Feel free to live out your Cinderella Story here at Augusta Caddyshack moment at the range. On the course, let’s keep it under 2 or 3, ok? Taking 15 practice swings before every shot: Bad Idea! So there you go, folks. Take this piece into account the next time you’re on the golf course. There’s nothing worse than having to wait every … single ... shot. When pace of play moves along smoothly, everyone stays happy. Golf is a tough game to master - but it’s even harder to learn when you can’t keep a steady pace. Make the experience enjoyable for everyone!

On May 14, 2014, Bartlett Country Club of Olean, NY will be “all about pink” as golfers hit the greens for Olean General Hospital’s “Golf to Fight Cancer” Tournament.

“This will be our fourth year hosting the tournament,” said Karen Fohl, Foundation President of Olean General Hospital. “It’s the first tournament of the season and receives a great response.” Laurie Kolb, Foundation Event Coordinator for Olean General Hospital added, “We hope to again have a full field of 144 golfers, many of whom come back year after year. We also anticipate another 150 guests at dinner, so approximately 300 attendees total.” Golfers and guests also look forward to a large raffle and auctions after dinner. It has become a very popular part of the event with quality prizes that many look forward to each year. “We have great auction items,” Fohl said, noting several prizes include Disney tickets and Southwest Airline tickets. “It’s a popular feature. All the funds benefit cancer care at Olean General Hospital and in the past have been used to purchase new equipment for breast surgery and the Mildred Milliman Radiation Center, which is affiliated with Roswell Park Cancer Institute.” Fohl said the event’s popularity continues to increase each year, which she believes illustrates the importance of quality cancer care to the community. “Everyone looks forward to it,” she said. “Participants love to support this cause. The community really comes together and we are proud of the support. Companies and individuals can even participate in honor or memory of someone who has been touched by cancer.” There are various levels of sponsorship available for the tournament. They currently have three Gold sponsors already committed for this year - Western NY Immediate Care Exigence, M&T Bank, and Charlie P. Joyce and Family. Roswell Park will be the cart sponsor and Paul Brown Dodge Jeep Kia is offering a 2014 Jeep Cherokee as a Hole-InOne prize for the fourth year in a row. Fohl noted, “We’ve been blessed to fill spots soon after we send the invitations.” Both Fohl and Kolb expressed that all are welcome at the post-tournament dinner, and guests can also participate in the putting contest - another popular event of the evening. Add DJ Gary Hendryx and Mercy Flight, which will provide a fly-over start to the 2014 tournament, and it’s sure to be a hit. Optimizing Your Game with Naturopathic Therapeutics By Dr. Kristina Barlow, N.D., C.S.T “When I die, bury me on the golf course so my husband will visit.” - Unknown Author “Golf is a game in which you yell ‘fore’, shoot six and write down five.” - Paul Harvey “The golf swing is like a suitcase into which we are trying to pack one too many things.” - John Updike “Golf is the most fun you can have without taking your clothes off.” - Chi Chi Rodriguez I enjoy watching golf on TV. I would like someone to take me to the driving range just to teach me how to properly hit a ball. And I love competition, numbers, the outdoors, companionship and details. But I will not even attempt to convince you that I know anything about this game. I do know that all you golfers out there have a deep passion, love and desire for this fascinating and fun sport. I will attempt to give you my best naturopathic advice to help you maximize your best game potential.*

INJURIES • NUTRITION • MENTAL PREPAREDNESS PREVENTION OF INJURIES Body Work: Regular chiropractic adjustments, therapeutic massages, yoga (this is excellent for golfers both physically and mentally), tai chi, qi gong and proper muscle/ connective tissue warm ups. Sunscreens: Sun damage or toxic sunscreens CAN cause undo injuries to the skin. Please use effective but clean, all natural sunscreens such as Eco Logical face and body cream. Bug Sprays: The proper bug sprays will do their job without increasing the toxic load in your body. Jason’s Quit Bugging Me, All Terrain Kid’s Herbal Armor, Natural Herbal Armor and our own essential oil spray consisting of Geranium, Lemon, Eucalyptus and Peppermint. Tei fu oil is great for preventing bug bites and for treating the itchiness of bug bites. TREATMENT OF INJURIES Body Work: In addition to physical therapy, chiropractic work and healing massages … craniosacral therapy releases restrictions in the fascia system or the connective tissue. All injuries need connective tissue work. In golf I see a lot of elbow (especially from what they are being told as improper swings), wrist, shoulder, cervical, thoracic and knee injuries or limitations. The craniosacral rhythm, or the Breath of Life, can be sensed through this light touch therapy. This rhythm comes from the flow of cerebrospinal fluid beginning in the 4th ventricle of the brain, looping around the spine and back again to the brain. Affecting this rhythm helps to balance the energy of the body from the inside out. As the energy from the practitioner’s hands interacts with the energy in the body, connective tissue is relaxed, allowing energy to flow freely and releasing restrictions to the body’s extraordinary healing powers. InLight Wellness System: The use of near infrared light directly on the injuries for 20 minutes. Used to increase the production of nitric oxide by the body. Nitric oxide causes the blood vessels to vasodilate in order to bring increased blood flow, and therefore increased nutrients to the area and decreased debris from the area. Amethyst Biomat: CranioSacral Therapy work is done on this far infrared heated mat. Extremely relaxing and it’s therapeutic effects are reached up to 6 inches in the tissues.

Homeopathy: Traumeel Gel or Cream and Traumeel are external/internal homeopathic products that are highly effective and often used for pain, inflammation and bruising. Symphytum homeopathic remedy30c can be taken to promote healing of broken bones. Hypericum 30c may help shooting nerve pain. Supplements: Relief Formula is used for temporary natural relief of minor aches and pains. Hops, Tumeric aka Curcumin, Willow Bark, Protease Enzymes, Boswellia and other ingredients make this product highly absorbable and well tolerated by the body so as to avoid adverse side effects. Time Released Vitamin C aids in the body’s healing processes for any injury. Super Algae is my favorite way to “eat” essential fatty acids, which help the body’s inflammatory response. The fish eat the algae, which makes them a great source of Omega 3s so why not eat the algae! Nerve 8 supports proper nervous system function, calming nerve pain, anxiety, insomnia and digestive issues. White willow, devil’s claw, valerian, hops and wood betony reduce cellular stress and calm the nerves. KBC with Skeletal Strength helps the body to properly and more quickly heal broken bones. Super ORAC provides the body with high doses of anti-oxidants to protect injured areas and their surrounding tissues from free radical damage. Kava Kava calms the nervous system, helps muscles to relax without dulling the senses and promotes relaxation. Nature’s Fresh Spray is made from plant enzymes and is like the “Windex” in My Big Fat Greek Wedding. It comes in a spray bottle … it can be sprayed anywhere on the body for bruising, inflammation, pain, herniated discs, strain, sprains, etc. Finally, MSM (methysulfonylmethane) is an organic form of dietary sulfur used to help fortify connective tissue and maintain healthy joints. Sports Creams/Oils: Tei fu oil or Tei fu lotion smells wonderful with camphor, eucalyptus and many other essential oils combined to provide a heating/cooling effect. Excellent for pain and inflammation. NUTRITIONAL SUPPORT Diet: Eating properly the day before and the day of your golf game will ensure better brain and muscle function. In my practice I see 10 culprits to illness, weight gain and general malaise: sugar, chemical sweeteners, processed foods, wheat, too many grains,

pasteurized/homogenized dairy, soy, corn, peanuts and “UnClean” animals foods. As you eliminate some of these foods, also add one or more of the following things: a shake (see recipe below), a fresh juice or a fresh blended smoothie with green veggies being the most important part. Shake Recipe: Love & Peas (one scoop), Nature’s Harvest (one scoop), Ultimate GreenZone (one scoop), Ionic Minerals (1 ounce), Chia Seeds (one teaspoon), Hemp Seeds (1 tablespoon), water or a non-dairy milk (almond, coconut, flax, hemp or brown rice) and frozen berries. Supplements: Supplements as “foods” will help … Spirulina, Bee Pollen, Ultimate GreenZone, Love & Peas, Nature’s Harvest, Alfalfa, Barley Juice, Herbal Calcium, Capsicum, Curcumin, Dandelion, Kelp, Ginseng, Maca, Nature’s Three (apple, oat and psyllium fiber), Flax Seed Oil, Garlic, Herbal Pumpkin, Black Walnut, Thai Go juice, Red Raspberry and many more! pH: It is important for overall health to help the body maintain alkalinity versus acidity. Too much acidity from processed foods, sugar, alcohol, and stress leads to much inflammation in the body. Liquid Chlorophyll in water, lemons, wheatgrass, watermelon, raw green veggies, increased plant foods to the diet and baking soda (1 tsp. 3 times/day.) Energy Powders: Add one packet to 16 oz of water … Solstic Energy (B vitamins and herds for energy), Solstic Cardio (l-arginine for energy and increase blood flow) and Solstic Revive (for electrolytes and repleting nutrients before or during exercise). MENTAL PREPAREDNESS “The best golfers are mentally strong; if they have a bad shot, they get over it very quickly and move on to the next.” These things can help with mental strength ... AnxiousLess: A fast-acting, non-drowsy formula helping to relieve the nervousness, worry and tension associated with daily living. Featuring Sceletium tortuosum - a time-honored South African herb - and theanine, thiamine, magnesium and zinc that replenish your body’s stress-coping reserves. One to 2 capsules/day or just as needed helps to decrease your anxiety, boost your mood, promote better sleep and reduce fatigue. Deep Breathing: Eckhart Tolle in A New Earth said that the #1 most important thing

KANE COUNTRY CLUB: ENJOY THE SCENIC CHALLENGE Located along Scenic Route 6 in Pennsylvania, Kane Country Club is one of the oldest golf establishments in western Pennsylvania. Playing here is a welcome change of pace taking you back into another era of golf. Small, sloped greens with gently rolling fairways framed by hardwood forests define the layout. Adding to the distinct character, a railway comes into play on two of the holes on the front nine. This 18-hole, par 70 golf course is open to the public and offers a scenic challenge to even the most accomplished golfer. Hole #12 is the signature hole; the fairway is guarded by a rock formation and a large pond. Distance control and placement is critical to setting up your mid to long iron over the water to an elevated green. Hole #13, par 4, plays slightly uphill, and hole #14 is a “beast” of a hole, playing uphill and protected down the right by thick woods. Wednesday night specials include golf and a steak dinner. After a fun evening of golf with friends, your group can enjoy a delicious steak, cooked just the way you like it, at the clubhouse. Kane Country Club is located at 6654 Route 6, Kane, PA, 16735. Phone 814-8379491 to schedule your tee time or to book your golf/dinner special. kanecountryclub.com PINE ACRES COUNTRY CLUB This 18-hole, 72 par public golf course is located atop the mountains of northwestern Pennsylvania at the edge of the Allegheny National Forest. With a 3-1/2 star rating from Golf Digest magazine, this championship course has a 136 slope rating that will test even the most experienced golfer.
