By Megan Sorokes On May 13, 2015, Bartlett Country Club of Olean, NY will be “all about pink” as golfers hit the greens for Olean General Hospital’s “Golf to Fight Cancer” Tournament. “This will be our fifth year hosting the tournament,” said Karen Fohl, Foundation President of Olean General Hospital. “It’s the first tournament of the season and receives a great response.” Golfers and guests can look forward to a great day on the course, followed by a wonderful dinner and auction. “We have great auction items,” Fohl said, noting several prizes include Disney tickets and Jetblue Airline tickets. “It’s a popular feature. All the funds benefit cancer care at Olean General Hospital and in the past have been used to purchase new equipment for breast surgery and the Mildred Milliman Radiation Center, which is affiliated with Roswell Park Cancer Institute.” Fohl said the event’s popularity continues to increase each year, which she believes illustrates the importance of quality cancer care to the community. “Everyone looks forward to it,” she said. “Participants love to support this cause. The community really comes together and we are proud of the support. Companies and individuals can even participate in honor or memory of someone who has been touched by cancer.” There are various levels of sponsorship available for the tournament. “We currently have three Gold sponsors committed for this year – Western NY Immediate Care Exigence, M&T Bank, and Charlie P. Joyce and Family,” said Fohl. “Roswell Park will be the car sponsor and Paul Brown Dodge Jeep Kia is offering a 2015 Jeep Cherokee as a Hole-InOne prize for the fifth year in a row.” Fohl noted, “We’ve been blessed to fill spots soon after we send out the invitations.” She expressed that all are welcome to the post-tournament dinner, and guests can also participate in the putting contest – another popular event of the evening. Add DJ Gary Hendryx and Mercy Flight which will provide a fly-over start to the 2015 tournament, and it’s sure to be a hit. Golfing In a Ski Town

Driving Toward a Change of Season at Holiday Valley, Ellicottville The Four Season Resort is Ready to Swing into Spring and Summer with Course Updates, New Staff and Special Packages

By Megan Sorokes The brisk bite of winter is waning, and off in the distance, golfers at Holiday Valley hear the familiar call of the course … FORE! With a projected opening date of April 10, 2015, it’s time to start polishing the old nine iron, practicing the perfect putt and planning a trip to one of Western New York’s premier golf resorts.

WHAT’S NEW

Steve Carney, PGA Master Professional and Director of Golf at Holiday Valley, is excited, and rightfully so. He recently hired Jerry Martin as superintendent for the Double Black Diamond course at Holiday Valley, starting in mid-January. “Jerry has 40 years of experience as a golf course superintendent in our northern climates,” Carney said. “His knowledge in understanding course challenges is endless. He’s a very good player and understands what is important to most players. He will continue the good conditions we have always had at the course, as well as improve the greens and all playing turf.” Speaking of turf, Carney noted that Holiday Valley will be improving all bunkers this year by rebuilding, adding new drainage and new sand. “We’ll also continue making all greens smoother and same speed every day,” he said. “Over the years we have always worked at improving all playing conditions and will just continue in this endeavor.”

PAR FOR THE COURSE

Anyone who has teed off at Holiday Valley is familiar with the natural beauty of the course, as well as its challenging terrain. With 18 holes spread over 6,500 yards, the par 70 course boasts “awesome elevations, many creeks and ravines, incredible scenery and a laid back atmosphere” - sure to give any golfer an unforgettable experience. “Our front nine is modestly difficult,” Carney said. “Enter the back nine and you’ll find all challenging and beautiful holes. We have six holes that could be our signature hole,” he added, noting Holes 11, 13 and 15 among favorites at Holiday Valley. “Hole 11 receives the most comments for its challenge, and it’s probably the most difficult 340-yard, par 4 hole you’ll ever play. But the reward of a good score will be something you’ll talk about forever.”

A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN

For golfers looking for special events and group outings, Holiday Valley is ready to please. In addition to the Mel Sole Golf School, which returns in May for three months, the resort offers leagues for men, women and couples, as well as special packages for groups. “Mel Sole’s three-day clinic has been with us for 12 years, bringing a lot of teaching experience,” Carney said of the South African golf veteran’s golf school. For anyone who has never golfed (or hasn’t golfed at Holiday Valley), it’s a great place to start. Carney said the experience of the game coupled with the atmosphere of Ellicottville bring an excitement to the game that’s tough to beat. “We have PGA qualified instructors, and we offer a private learning environment,” Carney noted. “Golf is the challenge of a lifetime. You can get better every day, and most importantly, it’s a game you can play well into your retirement. The Ellicottville atmosphere continues to be an awesome destination with endless shops and restaurants … it’s a hit. Golfing here, you’ll meet many new people and have fun forever.”

WHEN THE GAME IS OVER

The 18-hole excursion is over. You’re ready for some great food and a place to rest. Reward yourself at the 19th Hole … it’s time to check out the Tamarack Club and John Harvard’s Brew House, both conveniently located at the resort. Jane Eshbaugh and Kristen Sciara of Holiday Valley’s marketing team said the Tamarack Club is Holiday Valley’s premier course-side / pool-side condominium and hotel, offering an array of amenities and conveniently located to everything Ellicottville has to offer. “It’s really nice lodging, steps from the course with a pool and hot tubs,” Eshbaugh said. “Falling Waters spa and John Harvard’s restaurant are right on site.” Mmmmm, John Harvard’s. Have you been? If not, grab your golf buddies, friends or family and head over for “a casual dining experience that makes you feel comfortable and welcome.” “Our service is family-friendly, and we love to make new friends,” said Franco Brady, General Manager of Holiday Valley’s Food and Beverage Service (which includes John Harvard’s Brew House). Brady noted that diners at John Harvard’s will now enjoy cuisine from the restaurant’s new chef, Rory Mosher. “He’s actually a local chef that started with us when John Harvard’s first opened,” Brady said. “He is a creative cook in the kitchen and brings some good flavors together when he is using fresh fish, scallops or local meats.” According to Brady, diners should try Rory’s Osso Bucco, as well as the restaurant’s brick oven pizza, calamari, lobster mac ‘n cheese (a crowd favorite), house-made soups and world-class meatloaf. He said he doesn’t expect many changes in the restaurant this year because “the concept works.” “We like John Harvard’s for what it is, and guests don’t want us to change that,” Brady said. “If I tried to take lobster mac off the menu, there would be a revolt in this town!” With 24 draft beers on tap, including John Harvard’s own brews and local suds from Ellicottville Brewing Company and Southern Tier Brewery, the brew house is a prime place for golfers to pick apart their day on the course. “Golfers come to John Harvard’s after a round of golf to have a round and discuss their ‘hits and misses’,” Brady said. “We have golfer-friendly bartenders and great appetizers to feed your hunger after a strenuous round, and the outdoor patio is open during spring, summer and fall for golfers to stop by before heading home. Every day is a holiday, and every meal is a banquet.” For more information on John Harvard’s, call 716-699-5350. Additional info about the Tamarack Club and reservations is available online or by calling 800-323-0020 or 716-699-2345.

THE WHOLE PACKAGE

Don’t forget, golfer or not, Holiday Valley and the village of Ellicottville offer something for everyone to enjoy. “Try a little of everything,” Eshbaugh said, noting the availability of Sky High Adventure Park (read all about it on page 7), Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster, Climbing Forest, hikes to Spruce Lake, mountain or road biking, shopping and strolls around town. “Ellicottville is special for its friendly people, the fun things we have to offer and the great festivals. Enjoy the relaxed pace of this rural setting where the folks of Ellicottville are really glad to have you visit.” Ready to plan your trip? ELLICOTTVILLE FESTIVALS

Live music everywhere you go!

Test your abilities (physically and mentally) at Sky High Adventure Park, then experience the thrill of the Mountain Coaster

By Spencer Timkey What a winter it was in Ellicottville! We had tons of snow, consistently cold temperatures and some of the best conditions we’ve seen in quite some time. The vibe around the two ski resorts here (Holiday Valley and HoliMont) and the village was dynamic as it’s ever been, while we saw faces both familiar and new. When the lifts stop spinning and town quiets down, people are less apt to think of Ellicottville as a summertime vacation destination. But a burgeoning summer business has seen the town thrive in the warmer months, and a surplus of fun things to do can keep the entire family occupied.

TAKE TO THE TREETOPS AT HOLIDAY VALLEY

If you’ve been to Holiday Valley’s Sky High Adventure Park, then you’re already aware of how impressive it is; if you haven’t been, then get on it this summer! Defining Sky High isn’t easy, as it provides an abundance of different outdoor activities that require you to sweat and overcome some fear. The aerial park isn’t just a ropes course with zip lines - it’s a mutant hybrid of part Indiana Jones, part Ewok Village. The onset of the park’s opening saw trails of varying difficulty, and each year, the resort has added new ways to climb throughout the trees. As a self-guided adventure, you go at your own pace, with staff (in bright orange shirts) keeping an eye on you from the ground. The yellow courses, which are perfect for the little ones ages 7 and up, keep you around 10-15 feet off the ground, while the Commando course (writer’s note: it is not easy) puts you near the very top of the canopy. Black Storm, a local favorite, moves you to zip across Punch Bowl ski slope, where you do some mildly difficult features before zipping back across. While you’re over there, give a wave to the people on the way up the Mountain Coaster! After you take the zip line course back to the bottom (you fly above people walking up to the park!), take a break before hitting the 3-D Climbing Forest. One of only a few of these parks in the entire country, the Climbing Forest uses the same handles you’d find on a rock climbing wall, just attached to the tree. An attendant hooks you up to a self-belay, you climb up the tree, ring the bell and float gently back down to the ground. But wait, there’s more! Hand your harness to one of the awesome harness shop employees before heading up to the Mountain Coaster. Much like a roller coaster at an amusement park, get onboard the mountain coaster car (up to two people) and it takes you on a relaxing ride up the hill. The way down is even more fun, as you loop and twist and probably scream on the thrilling ride down. Had enough? We didn’t think so. After you’ve done a morning at the Adventure Park, grab some food at Tannenbaum before hiking up the hill to Spruce Lake. There are tons of ways to see the resort in the summer light … you just need to do a bit of exploring.

A team of volunteers has been helping clear the mountain biking trails over the past couple of summers, and you can find riding that’s mellow or aggressive - depending on your skill set and ambition. Whether you find yourself pedaling up the entirety of Holiday Valley Road to access the trails or driving up and parking, there are plenty of ways to get your heart pumping. Mountain biking trails are available, and there are plenty of apps you can fire up to keep track of where you’ve been. And if you’re ever in need of bike maintenance repair, or are just looking to do some bike-related shopping – equipment or apparel – head downtown to Bike & Bean, located on the main drag. Owner/rider Dennis Baldwin can fix you up (he offers knowledgeable bike service and delicious burritos) and send you off for a stellar day on the trails. Speaking of aggressive workouts, don’t forget about the Mudslide at HV (June 20), where teams (or solo) run a route around the resort and go through obstacles of varying difficulty. Disclaimer: you will get dirty. Full details can be found at www.holidayvalley.com/mudslide.

ELLICOTTVILLE FESTIVALS

Our local Chamber of Commerce has done a fantastic job of bringing a plethora of different events to town over the course of the summer. There is something to be said about being able to walk into town from the resort without eight layers of clothing on. Temperatures get hot in the summer, but typically, humidity stays pretty mellow. It’s perfect! The annual Summer Music Festival will consume the downtown area and Holiday Valley over the 4th of July weekend. On the 3rd, take an enjoyable chairlift ride (Mardi Gras) to the top of the hill and get some drinks/appetizers in you before coming back down for the ‘Caribbean Poker Night’ at the resort’s revamped Cabana Bar. On the actual holiday, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra will come and perform (writer’s opinion) John Williams’ best work - Star Wars. Not to mention, Vader and crew will be cruising around amongst the guests, attempting to persuade your little ones to join the dark side. The BPO is a perennial favorite. On Sunday the 5th, Grammy-winner Blood, Sweat & Tears is coming, and they’re led up front by American Idol runner-up Bo Bice. Tickets for these concerts which will take place on the slopes of Holiday Valley, are already on sale! Head to www.ellicottvilleny. com for ticket information, and to learn more about Summer Fest’s FREE downtown events, including the arts & crafts show, strawberry festival, and everyone’s favorite, the pet parade! Need more reasons to come to Ellicottville in the summer? Cycling Weekend June 5-7, Jazz & Blues Weekend July 24-26, International Bowhunters Organization (IBO) World Championships Aug. 6-9, Taste of Ellicottville Aug. 15-16, Rock N’ Roll Weekend Sept. 18-20 … and many other events peppered in between. There’s no doubt that Ellicottville in the summertime is the area’s best kept secret (until now, cat’s out of the bag!) so trade your winter clothes for shorts and get down here!

Page 08 ... FORE! GOLF NY PA ~ 2015 ANNUAL GOLF & TRAVEL EDITION

Golf vacations used to be only for the guys. But let’s face it. The 80’s are long gone. Whether you golf or not, Ellicottville has entertainment options galore for you in the summertime. Hey ladies, you can always use an excuse to take some extra time for yourself, and now more than ever, Ellicottville has plenty of options for you to not only play but also be pampered. Talk about having the best of both worlds! Whether you’re planning a golf getaway with friends, a relaxing vaca with the family, or just want to day trip to see what the warmer months in EVL are all about, here are just a few of the hot spots you should check out during your next trip to the 14731 zip code. Not familiar? Here’s the scoop: Salt caves are built from pink Himalayan salt imported from Europe, which are said to provide certain properties that aid in relief from respiratory ailments (asthma, allergies), skin problems (acne, dry skin), and other common conditions. This alternative, holistic approach lasts 45 minutes, and clients are fully dressed during their session. Gravity chairs, blankets and pillows are provided for total comfort. Relax and breathe in the healing salt air created by a soothing water feature. Calming music filters through the dim, color-lit (chromotherapy) room to enhance the ultimate experience.

WINERY OF ELLICOTTVILLE

14 MONROE ST. • EVL 716-699-1055 www.wineryofellicottville.com No vacation would be complete without a little (or more than a little) wine! In honor of dad Francesco Spicola, Dominic Spicola and his son-in-law Sam, along with the rest of the family opened the establishment to craft house-made, award-winning wines with locally grown grapes. Winners range from the sweet dessert-Raspberry to the dry Noiret to their latest creation, Excelsior hard apple cider (a collaboration between the winery and the Ellicottville Brewing Co.) Wine tastings are offered daily, and you’ll love their fun retail section too! (Tip: If you buy six bottles, the seventh is free!)

E-VILLE SPIRITS

(Their newly built wine room holds over 50 highly rated wines!) Snag a few bottles to take back to your condo or hotel room and let loose. Or call in with your order - they deliver!

You will then approach an opening with a field full of sculptures you can climb on, meander around, hang from, crawl in, lay across, sit next to or just stare in awe at the larger-than-life sculptures scattered throughout. Don’t forget to relax with the Ladies of the Lake and follow the trails through the upper woods for even more discoveries. Take a short drive to the Rohr Hill Road site where towering sculptures walk the fields. Visit with the giant Kings and Queens or search the edge of the woods for more large animals.

By Pat Morgan One of the tell tale signs of spring is that excited feeling you get as the snow shovel starts to see less and less use, those sunny days seem more frequent, and of course if you fancy yourself a golfer - planning those spring and summer trips to your favorite courses. Western New York is often noted as a great destination for golf, with many different styles and lengths of courses to choose from. Whether it’s a day trip or an overnight adventure, there are a variety of accommodations in the area to rest your feet after a fulfilling day on the links. Let’s go outside the box for a minute and introduce you to a place you may or may not have heard of - Triple R Camping Resort, located in Franklinville, NY. Whether you have your own camper, prefer a cabin, tent, or choose to rent one of their campers, they’ve got you covered. We’ve tee’d up some of Triple R’s offerings you can take a swing at, so read on to find out more. For those unfamiliar with Triple R, they’ve been in business 45 years now, and are located right on Bryant Hill Road, just minutes from the heart of Ellicottville. Family owned and operated by John and Jennifer Tinelli, along with their sons John II and Wyatt, they’ve consistently re-invested and improved their property annually, providing guests with some of the best camping amenities around. Renowned for their clean facilities and family first atmosphere, they offer water, electric, sewer, cable TV, free WiFi and a variety of electrical hook-ups. As aforementioned, they also have RV’s for rent, as well as cabins. A small store on-site carries groceries and other ‘I forgot it’ items, as well as camping necessities like firewood, ice, bottled water and more. Wait, there’s more: RV parts store and light RV service, golf cart sales and rentals, and scenic waterfront concrete patio sites! On top of all this, there are also well kept shower and restroom areas, as well as a full service laundromat area open 24 hours a day. What other camping area can boast that? This list of impressive features has helped to earn Triple R some notable rankings within the camping and RV communities, including Good Sam & Trailer Life rankings of 10-10-9.5. They are also ranked in the top 100 of over 14,000 (no, that’s not a typo!) campgrounds in the United States, which shows how fortunate we are to have such a gem in our own figurative backyards! Let’s keep it going … Triple R also offers a variety of activities. Many are geared towards the family vibe … they have an in-ground heated pool, volleyball and basketball courts, a recreation hall featuring arcade games, ping pong, billiards and more. And if you’re merely looking to sit around with some beverages and talk about how you ‘almost sank that putt on 18’, there are firepits, and some more calming activities like fishing to rehash the round over. Another important detail to note: Triple R is pet friendly, so if your caddy is more of the four legged furry variety, Triple R is truly the place for you, as many traditional accommodations in the area still struggle to allow leashed, well behaved pets. If this sounds like the perfect spot for your next trip to the region, whether golfing or not, there’s only one thing left to do: click on through to triplercamp.com, where you can view pictures, read more, and most importantly in this day and age - book online! You can also give them a shout at 716-676-3856 to discuss further, and put a refreshing new spin (that doesn’t leave you in the tall grass) to your next golf adventure.

Immerse Yourself in Entertainment, Education and Pure Enjoyment In Between Rounds on the Golf Course By Mary Heyl Whether you’re visiting Ellicottville, traveling through Cattaraugus County on the Amish Trail, or simply looking for an enjoyable place to spend the weekend, consider the city of Salamanca. Located just ten minutes south of Ellicottville, Salamanca is the intersection of history, Native American culture, breathtaking geography, and fun for visitors of all ages! Enjoy scenic views of the mountains, as Allegany State Park looms just beyond the city limits. There is a harmonious and historical bond between the landscape and Salamanca’s original inhabitants, as Salamanca is located on the reservation of the Seneca Nation of Indians, the largest tribe of the Iroquois Confederacy of Nations. Uniquely, Salamanca is the only city in the United States to lie almost entirely on a Native American Reservation. Those interested in the culture and history of the Seneca Nation will appreciate a visit to the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum located on Broad Street. This museum not only illuminates the history of the Seneca in Cattaraugus County, but also the Iroquois Nation, which consists of five other tribes across New York State. Train enthusiasts and history lovers alike will enjoy the Salamanca Rail Museum on Main Street, which is a fully restored passenger depot built in 1912. Once the hub of the hardwood industry, Salamanca was very much a railroad town in the early 20th century, a past that is beautifully portrayed in this museum, which is free to the public.

TERRY FATOR

WINNER OF AMERICA’S GOT TALENT to Perform in Salamanca ... with His Friends

A Conversation with Terry HULICK: You’ve been headlining your show for over five years now at the

Mirage in Las Vegas. Has it been everything you thought it would be? FATOR: Everything and more! It’s been phenomenal. And I can’t begin to tell you what a wonderful gift it is to sleep in the same bed every night. I spent more than twenty years traveling all over the country spending nine to ten months every single year in hotel rooms. I have a routine for the first time in my life. My wife is my assistant on stage and we go to the show together, we eat before the show, we do the show, we go home, walk our dogs and then watch a movie. It’s so nice.

HULICK: How have things changed as far as the initial surreal feeling of

.............................. FRIDAY | June 19, 2015 By Melanie Hulick The 2007 winner of NBC’s summer hit show, “America’s Got Talent”, is taking his headlining Vegas show on the road and will make a stop at Seneca Allegany Casino in Salamanca on Friday, June 19 at 7pm. Terry Fator, the amazing ventriloquist that won the second season talent show has realized his dream of becoming a big name entertainer, which he says was a dream 32 years in the making.

performing in Vegas? FATOR: It took me about a year and a half to get used to seeing the billboards and the taxicabs with my face on them. I guess when you see that day after day it becomes commonplace when it’s your normal daily job, which is amazing. But I will say this: the one thing that hasn’t changed at all is the excitement of stepping out on that stage in front of those people. It feels just like the first day I stepped on that stage at the Mirage. I take my job very seriously and it never has been about the fame and money - it’s always been about those people. My driving force has always been about having an audience to perform for that was eager and anxious to see what I could do, and that’s what I have now. That’s what I am most grateful for in my career. In my personal life I am most grateful for my wife, her family and my family. When we leave this planet it’s not going to be about the job or how famous we were - we look at how close we were to our families.

HULICK: This all started for you at a young age when you picked up a book

on ventriloquism. Was it then all your idea to create the puppets and name them or did someone else do that for you? FATOR: I create all of my puppets and name them. It’s all out of my head. Occasionally I’ll have a puppet that somebody else suggested, but even if they do I take it from there and create the characters, the voices, and the comedy. I decide what they’re going to be. Usually what I do is get a puppet and I’ll name it after I have it in my hands. It’s really hard for me to come up with a name before I have it in my hands because I want the name to match the character. So like with “Winston The Impersonating Turtle” I just ordered a turtle on the internet and as soon as the box came and I opened it I said, “Oh this is Winston The Impersonating Turtle.” I just knew it. I guess all the characters are somewhere in my head waiting to come out.

Having toured for more than 20 years as a ventriloquist trying to get that big break was tough. In the months before he decided to audition for the television show, Fator was told by three top producers after his performance at a convention in Vegas that he was not Las Vegas material. Returning to playing fairs and outdoor stages, a huge blow came when they had to move his show indoors because of rain and he took the stage to find only one fan in the audience. Most people would probably have thrown in the towel at that point, but Fator decided it was time to take his show to the three judges on “America’s Got Talent”. His audition with his puppet, Emma Taylor and her impression of Etta James took the judges by surprise. Moving onto the first round of the televised portion of the show, Fator again went with Emma singing “At Last”. From the moment he “didn’t open” his mouth as he voiced the puppet, I knew he was going to be unbeatable and I think the judges as well as America felt it too, even if Fator himself told me he didn’t.

HULICK: What an imagination. You must be so fun to have at a party. FATOR: Yes, I’ve always had quite an imagination - poor mom (laughs). I think

Having just celebrated his fifth anniversary as a headliner in his own theatre at The Mirage Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Fator seems to have a good head on his shoulders and is taking it all in stride. As we talked by phone I was struck by how genuine he was and that is exactly how I imagined he would be watching him back in 2007 if I ever got the pleasure to interview him.

HULICK: How do you sing without moving your lips on songs by Guns

We talked about what he is most grateful for in his career as well as his personal life, and what his driving force is and had been for the 32 years it took him to reach his dream. Fator frequently changes his show. As he says, “I’m always adding stuff and taking things out so you don’t see the same show every time. It makes it fun for me and for the audience … I hope everyone comes out to see me and my friends at Seneca Allegany. It’s going to be a great night of fun!”

..................................

Tickets to Terry Fator’s performance at Seneca Allegany Casino in Salamanca start at $30 and can be purchased through www.senecacasinos.com (click on Seneca Allegany). For more information on Terry Fator, visit www.terryfator.com

some people think I am, but my family is tired of all my stuff (laughs).

HULICK: I saw your show a few years ago, and I just love the puppet Berry

Fabulous (pictured). Could you tell me the story of how he came to be? FATOR: I had one of these flashes of inspiration and I started looking at my show and thinking, “what do I not do?” and I realized I don’t do any of the great divas - especially the gay icons like Barbra Streisand, Cher and Judy Garland - and I didn’t have a character in my show that could really pull that off. So I decided to create a gay character that would be incredibly flashy and just fabulous - that’s where I came up with the name. I certainly didn’t want this to be insensitive to my gay fans so I enlisted a gay friend to help me write the routine and make sure everything was “gay approved” (laughs). ‘N Roses or Black Sabbath? Those lead singers are very loud and I can’t imagine how tough it is to project your voice like that without moving your lips. FATOR: It is very taxing. Originally I was asked to do two shows on Fridays and Saturdays and I had to say no because my voice would not handle it. My voice doctor has said that what I do with my voice should be physically impossible - I break every single rule of vocalization and singing. Why or how I do it I have no idea, but I do know at the end of a 90-minute show my voice is exhausted. But regardless of the fact that I am physically exhausted body and voice-wise, I wake up the next morning ready to do it again.

HULICK: Once you won “America’s Got Talent” things changed completely for you and very quickly. Any advice for someone who is struggling as you did for years and how to handle the success when it happens? FATOR: The best thing I can say: if you have a dream, never stop working towards that dream. As long as you keep doing that, the dream will stay alive no matter how old you get. And the best way to handle the success: don’t buy into the nonsense - you’re not greater than any other person out there, no matter what anybody tells you. People start fawning all over you when you become successful. So just don’t buy into the hype and realize you’re no better than anybody else out there. That will keep you grounded.

Enjoy Randolph The Town with Hidden Treasures. SEARCH ENJOY RANDOLPH

By Mary Heyl Now that warmer days are here, there’s no better time to explore one of Cattaraugus County’s most distinctive villages: Randolph, NY. Although its namesake is a small village in Vermont, Randolph is like no other place in the country, for where else might you pass an Amish horse and buggy as you drive past an alpaca farm on your way to a beautiful golf course? Just a twenty-minute drive from Ellicottville, Randolph is the ideal destination for day-trippers of all ages and interests. Randolph is home to one of the most popular golf courses in the area, Cardinal Hills Golf Course. Founded in 1927, this 18-hole course is a microcosm of all that is admired about Cattaraugus County’s landscape: gently rolling hills, scenic views of the mountains, and the kind of quiet that people drive for miles to find. Located at 78 Conewango Road, Cardinal Hills is a par-72 course that provides a relaxing but challenging experience for golfers of all levels. Golfers can shop the pro shop for gear and equipment and take a break at the Clubhouse. With a full bar and restaurant, the Clubhouse truly is the “pause that refreshes,” and is open to non-golfers to dine, too. On a beautiful, warm day, the grills are fired up so golfers can grab a fresh hot dog or burger and continue on the course. Golfers are sure to meet Lola, Cardinal Hills’ English bulldog (and mascot) who oversees club entertainment and specializes in ball retrieval. For 2015 rates and cart rental fees, visit www.cardinalhillsny.com or call 716-358-5409. Planning a fun weekend for your family? There’s lots to do on Pope Road in Randolph! Pope Haven Campground, located at 11948 Pope Road, accommodates both the recreational and rugged camper alike. Pope Haven has pull-through and full hookup sites for campers with 30 and 50 amp electrical service, plus free Wi-fi and newly renovated bathrooms and showers. Primitive tent camping sites are also available, as is a beautiful pavilion for family reunions and picnics. Campers can enjoy the heated pool from Memorial Day through Labor Day, as well as basketball and volleyball courts and the game room. Hiking trails surround the campground, and campers can take advantage of the catch-and-release fishing pond nearby. For information on cabin or camper rental and to see the full schedule of activities, visit www.popehaven.com.

POPE HAVEN CAMPGROUND IS THE PERFECT FAMILY OUTDOOR GETAWAY

If you and your family are looking for a unique adventure this weekend, consider visiting an alpaca farm. Just a glance at the alpacas at Sue Bean’s farm, A Slice of Heaven Alpacas, located at 11144 Pope Road reveals that these sweet, docile cousins of the camel are a joy to all who meet them. Although alpacas are generally shy animals, they are receptive to visitors’ strokes and curious gazes, for no other animal of that size is as soft, loving - and yes, litter-trained - as the alpaca. Walk inside Sue Bean’s beautiful gift shop, Simply Natural, and explore the luxurious gift items made from alpaca fleece. Warm socks, monogrammed alpaca blankets, and handsome hand-knit gloves and scarves are just a few of the items available for purchase at Simply Natural. Find A Slice of Heaven Alpacas on Facebook to see photographs of the alpacas and their crias (babies) and new alpaca items in the gift shop.

A SLICE OF HEAVEN ALPACAS

Visitors can start their day or pause for refreshment at one of several restaurants downtown, such as Pete’s Place on Main Street (which has the best burgers in town, and is a favorite spot of former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly!) Enjoy lunch and breakfast daily at Vern’s on Jamestown Street, or if you’re lucky enough to be in Randolph on a Saturday, have a fish fry at BB’s Family Restaurant at 143 Main Street. The wearied traveler should book a massage at Senn-Sations Salon and Day Spa, which is housed in one of Randolph’s most beautiful Greek Revival historic buildings. Then discover the various shopping opportunities on Main Street by starting with Randolph Retail Company, home of unique gifts, home décor, and beautiful ladies clothing. By Spencer Timkey Golf is a unique sport. You may be playing in a foursome, but it’s your individual score that counts. You might be able to run a 4.5 in the 40-yard dash, but that doesn’t mean you’re good within 40 yards of the green. It’s a mental game of inches … the 6 inches between your ears. One might think that a golf club is just a golf club; that, because a driver is $100 more than another, it means you’ll instantly become Tiger Woods off the tee. This perception couldn’t be farther from the truth. Enter Rick’s Golf World in Olean, NY. Helping golfers find the right clubs since 1990, it’s a full-service shop that should be a destination for any golfer serious about their swing. With name brands such as Taylor Made, Ping, Puma, Cobra, Callaway, Titleist and FootJoy, owner Pete Lisi has built the business into the reputable one it is today. One of the coolest features offered by any shop in the area, the FlightScope system (on-site at Rick’s Golf World) uses radar to track the actual flight of the golf ball after your swing. Developed by South African electronics engineer Henri Johnson in 1989, FlightScope uses a Doppler radar system to record your ball movement, backspin, flight path, club head speed/angle and much more. The company originally (and currently still) develops defense radar systems for countries around the world. Lisi bought the system in February 2013 and said it’s been an instant success. With ample space inside the shop for a “BIG” swing cage, the customer doesn’t feel like he or she is swinging the club in a closet. A 210” diagonal screen allows customers to watch where their ball goes after they hit it. This system tracks the ball and swing separately, which gives Lisi improved ability to work with his customers to find them the perfect club. Here’s how it works: a customer can come in and try a bunch of different clubs (specifically, drivers). After the customer hits a couple balls off of different drivers, he’ll pull up a screen that shows the different clubs’ “angle of attack” and “carry distance” - so if someone is hitting a Callaway driver 10 yards further and straighter than a Taylor Made one, then they’ve found the winner. Fitting is $50, but Lisi will knock that off the retail price if the customer so chooses to purchase it. The FlightScope system is also good for ‘club gapping’. Lisi explains it this way: “Let’s say you hit your 3-wood 240 yards and your 4-iron 190. We need to find you a club that you can hit at that consistent 200-210 yard range. The customer can try out some hybrids or different clubs to find that sweet spot.” There are different camera-based systems that take individual photographs of the ball’s flight path, but FlightScope is only one of two that actually implements a radar system to track it. Rick’s Golf World is a full-service shop that offers regripping, fitting and anything else a golfer could ask for. If you want to really figure out the best clubs to buy, don’t buy them from some website because they’re cheaper. Head to Rick’s, get the best bang for your buck and support a small business. Rick’s Golf World is open year-round. Pop into the shop, 228 N.Union St., Olean, NY 14760, or give Pete a shout at 716-373-6400.

KANE COUNTRY CLUB: ENJOY THE SCENIC CHALLENGE

Kane Country Club is an 18-hole, par 70 golf course with well-maintained greens and tight tree lined fairways open for public play. Playing here is a welcome change of pace, taking you back to another era of golf. Small, sloped greens with gently rolling fairways framed by hardwood forests define the layout. Adding to the distinct character, a railway comes into play on two of the holes on the front nine.

Pine Acres Country Club received a 3.5 star rating from Golf Digest Magazine

Hole #12 is the signature hole; the fairway is guarded by a rock formation and a large pond. Distance control and placement is critical to setting up your mid to long iron over the water to an elevated green. Hole #13, par 4, plays slightly uphill, and hole #14 is a “beast” of a hole, playing uphill and protected down the right by thick woods. A great value, green fees including cart prices start at $30 / $20 from Monday-Thursday, to Friday-Sunday rates of $39 / $20. For more information and to schedule your tee time call 814-837-9491. WALK THE ‘TRACKS ACROSS THE SKY’ The Kinzua Sky Walk is a must see! This reinvention of a historic landmark - the Kinzua Viaduct - is located at the Kinzua Bridge State Park in Mt. Jewett, Pennsylvania. Once the longest and highest railroad viaduct in the world, the Kinzua Viaduct was partially destroyed by a tornado in 2003. The new skywalk is an engineering marvel constructed on six of the remaining historic towers. Here you can view the power of nature and the power of man, as you survey the wind damage from the tornado of 2003. Witness Mother Nature’s natural regeneration of the forest damaged by the wind energy of the tornado. Walking out 624 feet into the Kinzua Gorge, you will be amazed at the stunning vistas that the new skywalk provides at a height of over 234 feet. The park offers a new hiking trail down to the bottom of the gorge, a park pavilion, and picnic tables. A new visitors center currently under construction at the park will feature two exhibit halls, two classrooms, restrooms and staffing at the park. The new Kinzua Visitors Center is scheduled to open in the fall of 2015. The park offers free admission and is open daily from 6am to dusk. Kinzua Bridge State Park: 1721 Lindholm Road, Mt. Jewett, PA 16740, 814-965-2646

PLAN YOUR TRIP

POPULAR NEARBY COURSES

Head North and Get a Round In at Concord Crest Tee It Up at this Family Owned and Operated Golf Course in East Concord, Known for its Top-Notch Customer Service and Scenic Views

By Pat Morgan When we take a look at the courses afforded to golfers here in the Southern Tier, we often find ourselves looking at the multitude of tracks located in Cattaraugus, Chautauqua and Northern PA counties. One course we would be remiss if we didn’t spotlight however, is just a touch north, located just beyond Springville, NY called Concord Crest Golf Course. This impressive 6,000+ yard course is just a short drive from Ellicottville, and after reading on, you’ll discover why it’s worth the short trek north to get a round in. Owned and operated by the husband and wife team of Gail and Don Ploetz (and their dedicated crew of cart attendants, servers, and course maintenance workers), Concord Crest got its start in 2001 as a 9-hole course in the rolling hills just off of Genesee Road in the town of East Concord. These foothills lent themselves to the initial concept, and along with Don, can take some of the credit as the default course architect. Having played this course several times, I can speak to it truly being one of those rolling hill layouts, where an average golfer can appreciate the well thought-out design and well maintained playing surfaces. A key detail that stands out here is the absence of homes, roads, and other distractions one often finds while navigating a course. The ability to take in the scenery and close out distraction is a huge plus that many golfers find enjoyable. With four tee’s to choose from, there are a few ways to enjoy the course, for all ages and abilities as well. Speaking to the all-ages aspect of their operation, Concord Crest is a huge advocate of junior golf and is committed to promoting not just the gamesmanship of golf itself, but the confidence, sportsmanship, judgment and integrity also associated with this incredible sport. Concord Crest offers Junior Golf Camps to interested young players ages 5-16, and with an average instructor-to-camper ratio of 8:1, there is never a concern that your grom sized Golden Bear won’t receive the tips and tutelage they desire. If you’re a bit older, Concord Crest also offers Ladies, Mens, Junior, Christian, and Mixed Leagues - truly something for everyone looking to get out there and play! With golf season just around the corner (at least, we hope - who knows what Mother Nature has planned this year, after all!) it’s time to get planning your next round. Pick up the phone and call Concord Crest Golf Course at 716-592-7636 , follow them on Facebook, or click on through to the www.concordcrest.com.

GOOD IDEA BAD IDEA: Golf Course Edition Taking 15 Practice Swings Before Every Shot ... Bad Idea! When Play Moves Along Smoothly, Everyone Stays Happy By Spencer Timkey Warmer months are undoubtedly on their way, and soon we’ll all be getting after our favorite activities. That includes heading to the golf course and channeling our inner Rory. Yes, golf is an awesome, super-fun thing to do in the summer with your friends. But to help with your pace of play (how fast you’re moving from hole-to-hole) and to keep everyone else on the course as stoked as you, let’s go through Good Idea, Bad Idea: Golf Course Edition. Bringing multiple clubs with you to your ball so you don’t have to walk back to the cart. It may only seem like 15 or 20 seconds, but this time adds up after an entire round. Taking multiple clubs with you (for example, if you’re within 50 yards of the green, take a pitching wedge and your putter) cuts down on wasteful time. Bringing multiple clubs with you to your ball: Good Idea! Stopping for lunch at the turn (when you finish the front 9 and are about to start the back 9) keeps the group behind you waiting. Plan ahead and make a sandwich, or call the pro shop when you’re on the 7th hole so your lunch is ready to go when you get there. Making people wait because you want a burger and fries before you start the back 9: Bad Idea! Playing ready golf (hitting the ball when you’re ready to hit it) will drastically improve your pace of play. Listen, this isn’t The Tour. Unless you’re playing in a sanctioned tournament, you can go ahead and hit the ball before the person that has ‘the honors.’ No one is going to care - especially the group behind you. Playing ready golf: Good Idea!

You know what really grinds the gears of course professionals everywhere? People that don’t show up on time for their tee-times. You wouldn’t show up late to work, would you? Think about all of the people you’re holding up when you walk in at 9:15 for a 9:00 o’clock time. Showing up late for your tee time: Bad Idea! Bringing your own clubs to most courses is both a) required, and b) required. You know what happens when you share clubs? Your group takes forever. Most pro shops have the option for you to rent clubs for the round, and many times it’s going to be relatively cheap. But when you’re on one end of the fairway and your cart-mate is on the other and you both need the 7-iron, it’s going to waste time. Bringing your own clubs: Good Idea! We all want to be on The Tour. But let’s look at reality, folks. Most of us will not be heading to Augusta for a chance at the green jacket. Getting limbered up before you hit is cool, but no one requires 15 practice swings before every single shot. All that does is keep both the group you’re playing with and the group behind you irritated. Feel free to live out your Cinderella Story here at Augusta Caddyshack moment at the range. On the course, let’s keep it under 2 or 3, ok? Taking 15 practice swings before every shot: Bad Idea! So there you go, folks. Take this piece into account the next time you’re on the golf course. There’s nothing worse than having to wait every … single ... shot. When pace of play moves along smoothly, everyone stays happy. Golf is a tough game to master - but it’s even harder to learn when you can’t keep a steady pace. Make the experience enjoyable for everyone!
