By Spencer Timkey When you’re out on the golf course with your friends, nothing can go wrong. The sun is shining, you’re high-fiving after sinking birdie putts and at that moment, very little matters. Regardless of how you play (this isn’t the Tour, you should be enjoying yourself!), there are few things that beat out a round of golf. That’s the life mantra Ellicottville’s Dan Busekist has adopted. An avid golfer and lover of the game, he founded ‘Clubs Fore Veterans’ last year, a non-profit that donates gently used sets of clubs to our nation’s veterans.

“Last summer, Anj (Anjanette Nicolazzo, Busekist’s girlfriend) and myself were talking about things going on around town. I had a bunch of clubs I wasn’t using anymore, and didn’t know what to do with them. We went online searching for organizations I could donate to, and there wasn’t really anything locally. So I said, ‘I’ll start one up myself’.”

Clubs Fore Veterans was born. Busekist and Nicolazzo were determined that something this unique could really take off. Everyone wants to support a veteran - especially Busekist. “I’ve been in the National Guard for the past four years. A lot of my friends are military guys. They’ve all been deployed and have been through some stuff. Friends at bases tell me that the best part of their week is the four hours they spend on the golf course. There are no issues, no distractions. Just golf and friends.” Now in its sophomore summer, Busekist and Nicolazzo are turning the heat up. After linking a couple vets with clubs last summer, the groundwork has been laid to expand. They’re attempting to collect more kids clubs to push the family aspect of the sport. “When you think about golf, it really is an awesome bonding experience,” Busekist said. “When these moms and dads come home from overseas, they haven’t seen their kids. What better way to spend time with them than on the golf course, learning (or improving) their golf games?”

Busekist knew that there are tons of veterans who would love to learn how to play golf. But they don’t have the means or the know-how to get started. “If I can provide them with clubs to play with, that’s half of it,” he said. “Our next goal is reaching out to some courses around the Western New York area to see if there’s a night of the week they’d be willing to offer discounted rates to veterans. That way, we’ve got new golfers and are continuing the mission of the NPO.” Busekist and Nicolazzo, at the onset of founding, figured that acquiring 5-6 sets of clubs would be a good start. Keeping the expectations low and being realistic about numbers is a smart move for any new NPO. That is, until Holiday Valley’s PGA Pro Steve Carney got involved. “I collect clubs from people that retire, or trade-ins - many different places,” Carney said. “I give them to kids, service groups, people that can’t afford them. When Dan approached me, I knew this was a great cause.” Last summer, Carney donated 30 (thirty!) sets of clubs, which for Busekist, was an incredible gesture and huge for the initial setup for the organization. “Steve Jacobson donated the first set, which we gave away,” said Busekist, “and then Carney came through with 30 sets. It’s way beyond what we initially thought we’d have. As the word’s gotten out, more and more people have reached out to us.” Clubs Fore Veterans has its hands on plenty of irons, but is in need of putters, wedges, woods and bags. “We’ll take anything,” Busekist said. “That’s why our slogan, ‘Every Club Counts,’ works so well. It doesn’t matter if the clubs are 20 years old … everything matters. It really sums up what we’re trying to do as an organization.” If you’re a veteran and want to get started on the golf course, the best way to get a hold of Clubs Fore Veterans is through Facebook. Busekist will meet with you and get you started. (He asks that you bring your DD 214). If you want to donate, send them a message and they’ll arrange a pick-up/drop-off. “I love to golf. It’s my absolute favorite hobby,” he said. “I would golf seven days a week if I could make any money at it (laughs). I’m a huge supporter of the game, and of helping our nation’s veterans. This is a way I can give back to them while supporting the thing I love.”

Golfing In a Ski Town Black Diamonds aren’t Just a Winter Thing

Holiday Valley Resort Rolls out the Green Carpet: The Double Black Diamond Golf Course is Open for the Season!

By Dash Hegeman As all of you snow enthusiasts know, winter came to Ellicottville slowly and left rather abruptly. While Holiday Valley was open for business just before Christmas Day and people were out on the slopes enjoying the snow that the Valley’s Mountain Crew worked so diligently to blanket the slopes with, there were other people who made it a point to go out to one of the local golf courses and enjoy a very late season round of golf. And naturally, some people hit the Valley in the morning and the greens in the afternoon. You just never know what nature will give you in Ellicottville. But all of that is now past us and with any luck, Mother Nature is about to make up for her helter-skelter winter with an enjoyable spring and summer. One where people can get outside and enjoy the majesty that the area has to offer. Holiday Valley, for one, is definitely looking forward to receiving some favorable weather. There is no doubt that everyone at the resort is excited about the prospect of spending some time outside in nice weather while soaking in some vitamin D. If you have a passion for golf, the Double Black Diamond course is where you will want to be this golf season. As a way to help you prepare, FORE! GOLF sat down with Steve Carney, Director of Golf and Summer Operations at Holiday Valley to find out what exactly makes golfing at Holiday Valley such a fun experience. Before the fun begins for the customers though, there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes to help set the tone for a successful summer, and that is where Carney and his dedicated crew come in to play. As you can probably imagine, transitioning a season that requires the ground to be covered in as much snow as possible to one where immaculate green grass is the desired goal comes with certain challenges, but Carney and his employees have it down to a science. In fact, he stated that the transition is a smooth one - no matter what the weather has in store for the grounds crew. Rain, snow, clear or sunny. They’ve seen it all and know how to manage. In terms of opening day for the 2016 season, Carney said, “Our original opening day was April 10. With the weather we have had, we decided to open our practice facility on Friday, March 11. One month earlier. “ The front nine opened for free play on March 26, and opened “officially” on April 1. So make sure you check for updates on Holiday Valley’s new and improved website, which can be found at www.holidayvalley.com, to get the most up-to-date information. Speak with Carney and you’ll quickly find that the dedication he has for his craft is something that he takes great pride in. “We have the most beautiful course in Western New York,” Carney stated. “We have great terrain to create very different and challenging holes. Four sets of tees challenge all players.” The skiable terrain that brings so many people to Holiday Valley over the winter months helps to play into the challenge of the Double Black Diamond. And just like double black diamond slopes, navigating this aptly named golf course takes some well thought out tactical precision. In 2009 Holiday Valley did a complete $1.5 million dollar renovation to the course, and since then, the course has flourished and grown in very well. Last year Holiday Valley brought in a new Course Superintendent, Jerry Martin, who has been instrumental in helping to improve the way the course is played. Each year five to six bunkers get completely rebuilt and Holiday Valley is also investing in a variety of programs to help continue the consistency of the greens. There is little doubt that the residents of the area are looking forward to the summer months. With winter not being what many were hoping for, one might think that Carney and his team would feel some added pressure to put out a product that went above and beyond their already high standards. But according to Carney, that simply is not the case. “Our goal every year is the same,” said Carney. “Offer a nicely conditioned course so all players can come and enjoy. Winters are not all perfect, as we know. So Holiday Valley will continue to host a great facility for your summer fun and events.”

Speaking of events, Carney reported that there will be some fun ones. “The Italian American Charity Tournament returns to Holiday Valley for their 36th year,” said Carney. “This is a huge fundraiser out of Jamestown, NY. Our charity events, weddings, and business events are increasing every year and in 2016 have advanced again. We have a busy schedule. Our Monday ladies league reports a 50% increase and every Wednesday our beginner ladies league has been very busy.” Additionally, for the 12th consecutive year, the Double Black Diamond will host the Mel Sole Golf School, which offers one, two and three-day golf schools for anyone looking to take their game to the next level.

THE 19TH HOLE

As you probably know, golf isn’t the only thing to do at Holiday Valley in the summer. In fact, it’s far from it. Whether you’re into Sky High Adventure Park, the Mountain Coaster, hiking, biking, or just chilling by the pool, Holiday Valley has you covered. Oh, and there is food. An amazing assortment of food to be exact. Franco Brady, the General Manager at Centerplate and the man responsible for making sure that Holiday Valley properties are on the cutting edge of delicious, is very excited about the upcoming summer. “John Harvard’s restaurant is the perfect spot to meet your friends either before the round for lunch or after golf for some 19th hole refreshments,” said Brady. “John Harvard’s has a full service menu with everything from loaded fresh nachos, kettle pub chips to calamari and the biggest, best wings in town. We also have thin crust pizza with numerous choices straight from the brick oven. Our burgers are fresh, never frozen and cooked on the grill with many different toppings. Dinner time always presents many savory selections from Chef Rory Mosher that reflect the freshest fish from the ocean and local produce and meats to reflect recipes from our area. Our Fish & Chips are a local favorite, as is the Lobster Mac and Cheese.” In the mood for a cold, refreshing beverage? The JH bar features 24 different brews on tap with fan-favorites like Southern Tier, EBC and John Harvard’s own signature beer. Brady went on to give a nice rundown of the different food service options that guests have at Holiday Valley, aside from the indoor seating and on-course golf cart with beer and snacks … • Cabana Bar has a beach theme and plenty of libations to keep you hydrated by the pool. Our bar staff makes great summertime cocktails to make you feel like you are in the tropics. You can also order from the Cabana Bar’s Light Fare menu and do a salad or feed your inner beast with a ½ pound burger. • McCarty’s is the best kept secret about Holiday Valley in that you can get real Starbucks coffee freshly brewed, and our Espresso machine knocks out the best specialty drinks. Chris makes the tastiest cookies and pastries, and our daily specials keep the locals coming back. Located in the main lodge on the bottom floor, it’s easy access to golfers while they are waiting to tee off or coming around heading to number 10 at the turn. • The Sky High Café features burgers, pizza, chicken fingers and the best footlong hot dawg in the county - The Commando Dawg! Treat yourself to the gourmet tube steak after you have conquered the vertical challenge of the ropes course. “We have 52 weddings booked for this ‘off-season’ so every weekend we have catered events to keep our staff busy! Chef David Seitz has been starting off our newly wedded couples with fine fare on their wedding dinner for 15 years.” There you have it. With so much to do at Holiday Valley this summer, you’d better plan more than one visit because it’s impossible to do all of it in one day. And if you’re looking to improve your golf game this summer, Holiday Valley has a trio of qualified and enthusiastic instructors on staff. Steve Carney is a PGA Master Professional and the 2015 Western New York PGA Professional of the Year. Kyle Benish is a PGA Class A member and the 2014 Western New York PGA Assistant Professional of the Year. And Tom Dirito is a member of the United States Golf Teachers Federation. They also offer video lessons, which have been gaining an immense amount of popularity over the past few years. For more information, call 716-699-2345.

Ellicottville: The Whole Package

FORE! GOLF NY PA ~ 2016 ANNUAL GOLF & TRAVEL EDITION ... Page 07

From Treetop Adventures to Slopeside Concerts ...

There’s plenty of excitement to keep you entertained before and after your round on the golf course. Make a weekend of it! By Spencer Timkey When the lifts stop spinning and town quiets down, people are less apt to think of Ellicottville as a summertime vacation destination. But a burgeoning summer business has seen the town thrive in the warmer months, and a surplus of fun things to do can keep the entire family occupied.

HOLIDAY VALLEY If you’ve been to Holiday Valley’s Sky High Adventure Park, then you’re already aware of how impressive (and fun) it is; if you haven’t been, then get on it this summer! Defining Sky High isn’t easy, as it provides an abundance of different outdoor activities that require you to sweat and overcome some fear. The aerial park isn’t just a ropes course with zip lines - it’s a mutant hybrid of part Indiana Jones, part Ewok Village. The onset of the park’s opening saw trails of varying difficulty, and each year, the resort has added new ways to climb throughout the trees. As a self-guided adventure, you go at your own pace, with staff (in bright orange shirts) keeping an eye on you from the ground. The yellow courses, which are perfect for the little ones ages 7 and up, keep you around 10-15 feet off the ground, while the Commando course (writer’s note: it is not easy) puts you near the very top of the canopy. Black Storm, a local favorite, moves you to zip across the Punch Bowl ski slope, where you do some mildly difficult features before zipping back across. After you take the zip line course back to the bottom (you fly above people walking up to the park!), take a break before hitting the 3-D Climbing Forest. One of only a few of these parks in the entire country, the Climbing Forest uses the same handholds you’d find on a rock climbing wall, just attached to the tree. An attendant hooks you up to a self-belay, you climb up the tree, ring the bell and float gently back down to the ground. But wait, there’s more! Hand your harness to one of the shop employees before heading up to the Mountain Coaster. Much like a roller coaster at an amusement park, get onboard the mountain coaster car (up to two people) and it takes you on a relaxing ride up the hill. The way down is even more fun, as you loop and twist your way back to the bottom. Had enough? We didn’t think so. After you’ve done a morning at the Adventure Park, grab some food at Tannenbaum before hiking up the hill to Spruce Lake. There are tons of ways to see the resort in the summer light … you just need to do a bit of exploring. A team of volunteers has been helping clear the mountain biking trails over the past couple of summers, and you can find riding that’s mellow or aggressive - depending on your skill set and ambition. Whether you find yourself pedaling up the entirety of Holiday Valley Road to access the trails or driving up and parking, there are plenty of ways to get your heart pumping. Mountain biking trails are available, and there are plenty of apps you can fire up to keep track of where you’ve been. And if you’re ever in need of bike maintenance repair, or are just looking to do some bike-related shopping – equipment or apparel – head downtown to Bike & Bean, located on the main drag. Owner/rider Dennis Baldwin can fix you up (he offers knowledgeable bike service and delicious burritos) and send you off for a stellar day on the trails. Speaking of aggressive workouts, don’t forget about the Mudslide at Holiday Valley (June 18), where teams (or individuals) run a route around the resort and go through obstacles of varying difficulty. Disclaimer: you will get dirty. Find details at www.holidayvalley.com/mudslide.

ELLICOTTVILLE FESTIVALS

Our local Chamber of Commerce has done a fantastic job of bringing a plethora of unique events to town over the course of the summer. There is something to be said about being able to walk into town from the resort without eight layers of clothing on. Temperatures can get hot in the summer, but typically, humidity stays pretty mellow. It’s perfect! The annual Summer Music Festival will consume the downtown area and Holiday Valley over the 4th of July weekend. On the 1st, enjoy drinks/appetizers during the ‘Luau Party’ held at the resort’s Main Lodge prior to attending the Friday night concert on the slopes … Rusted Root will be playing! On the 2nd, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra will perform songs of your favorite heroes and villains. The BPO is a perennial favorite. Naturally, you’ll want to stay for the fireworks! On Sunday the 3rd, 38 Special will perform slopeside. Tickets for these concerts, which will take place on the slopes of Holiday Valley are on sale now! Head to www.ellicottvilleny.com for ticket information and to learn more about Summer Fest’s FREE downtown events, including the arts & crafts show, strawberry festival, and everyone’s favorite, the pet parade! Need more reasons to come to Ellicottville in the summer? The Happy Half Marathon, 5K & Beer Mile is May 7, Cycling Weekend is June 3-5, Ellicottville’s 1st annual Paddle Festival hosted by Adventure Bound June 18, Jazz & Blues Weekend July 30-31, Taste of Ellicottville Aug. 1314, Rock N’ Roll Weekend Sept. 16-18 … and many other events peppered in between. The Enchanted Mountains WHERE DO YOU WANT TO PLAY?

SPRING Yourself into Nature ... Cattaraugus County, New York is YOUR Place to Have Some Fun in the Sun! ONOVILLE MARINA

The Enchanted Mountains region has many golf courses that will help you tee off to premium golfing at affordable prices, and with beautiful views while you aim for the fairways and greens. Between tee times however, there is so much to do and see off the course! The beginning of May marks the opening of the best of our parks including Rock City Park, Griffis Sculpture Park, Onoville Marina and Sky High Adventure Park. How about enjoying a scenic rafting trip down the famous Cattaraugus Creek, exploring huge rocks, hanging out in the great outdoors, touring Old Order Amish Country or seeing larger than life sculptures? It’s all here waiting for you, so Where Do You Want to Play? Snap yourself back into the swing of things with a White Water Rafting Trip down the Cattaraugus Creek. Spring starts the season for most, and what better way to wake up from hibernation than to ride thrilling Class II and III rapids while taking stops to enjoy the sunshine and beautiful views of Zoar Valley. Sign your group up with one of our Guide services: Zoar Valley Canoe & Rafting, Adventure Calls Outfitters, or Catt Rafting Adventures! The fun doesn’t end after spring, with inflatable kayak season continuing on through June. Besides some of the best paddling around, you can discover pristine waterfalls, majestic cliffs and old-growth forests. Cattaraugus Creek is also known for its Angling opportunities. Routinely a top 10 steelhead fishing site, you can find an abundance of naturally populated and well-stocked spots that will put you back in touch with nature! If you prefer boats with engines, or more pristine waters, head over to Onoville Marina in South Valley. This Marina gives you access to the Allegheny Reservoir and 91 miles of natural shoreline with secluded bays and no commercialization. Affordable prices whether you are launching for the day, applying for dock space or fueling up, there are also many restaurants and stores nearby. Ospreys and bald eagles are frequent flyers above the waters and the surrounding hills of forest.

ROCK CITY PARK

ALLEGANY STATE PARK

There’s no better place to see the birds soar, watch the leaves grow and get outdoors than Allegany State Park. One of the joys of summer vacationing is camping! Gather around the campfire to hear the noises of the night while you “unplug” with your family. This park has much to boast about being the largest NY State Park and offering a 24-mile trail system for mountain biking, two lakes, miles upon miles of hiking (including the North Country Trail), and just about every other outdoor activity you can think of. What brings visitors back year after year is the friendly atmosphere and feeling that sometimes you just go to go natural! Packed full of events all year long, you can start with the Annual Geobash, May 20-22, celebrating its 11th year! Keep your calendar clear for the Nature Pilgrimage, Rock the Park, Full Moon Beach Party and their Adventure Runs and Races! Rock City Park in Olean invites visitors to explore their massive outcropping of quartz conglomerate. What that means is you can climb on, in between, and even under rocks that are sometimes two stories tall! Whether you are going for a short visit or a full day, this park will lead you on a different adventure each time. There is a semi-paved trail about one mile long that is perfect for the whole family. But feel free to adventure out from this trail, exploring whatever your eyes can spot. There is a gift shop with interesting and unique items, including many gems, minerals and fossils, as well as bathrooms, a picnic area, and outdoor art. They host two annual events - the first being a Mother’s Day weekend Arts and Crafts Show and the second being a Columbus Day Gem, Mineral and Fossil Show.

NEW YORK’S AMISH TRAIL GRIFFIS SCULPTURE PARK

Good weather means a trip to Griffis Sculpture Park in East Otto. Here, you can start out at the Mill Valley Road property where you are immediately greeted by a metal insect almost as big as your car. Then make your way on foot to the trail through the woods, where sculptures are accents to the walkway. Eventually you’ll approach an opening with a field full of sculptures you can climb on, meander around, hang from, crawl in, lay across, sit next to or just stare in awe at the larger-than-life sculptures scattered throughout the grounds. Don’t forget to relax with the Ladies of the Lake and follow the trails through the upper woods for even more discoveries. Take a short drive to the Rohr Hill Road site where towering sculptures walk the fields. Visit with the giant Kings and Queens or search the edge of the foods for more large animals. Spend a day or only an hour and you will be planning a return trip in the autumn to see amazing color in the trees or to tour the park at night, when Night Lights at Griffis Sculpture Park returns. Forget the whirlwind of winter as you adventure on a trail unlike any other you will find! New York’s Amish Trail runs along the entire western side of Cattaraugus County. Venture from Randolph up to Gowanda, following backgrounds with picturesque scenery. Catch a glimpse into a simpler way of life by stopping in Amish homes and shops to purchase handmade products by talented craftsman. In between stops you will lose the rest of the world as you return to a simpler way of life in the charming countryside. Or tour this area via motorcycle. The calm, relaxing atmosphere is a rider’s dream. There will be plenty of shops where you can fill up the saddlebags, along with sprawling views and low traffic! Call the Enchanted Mountains number for a Free Amish Trail Map and for any questions you have about our Old Order Amish. So while you’re waiting to tee off at any of our area’s spectacular golf courses, take some great reading material, the Enchanted Mountains 2016 Activities Guide. Call 1-800-3310543 to receive the Guide or brochures on Allegany State Park, the Amish Trail and other activities you can warm up with this Spring and Summer!

Day Trip to Randolph

FORE! GOLF NY PA ~ 2016 ANNUAL GOLF & TRAVEL EDITION ... Page 15

Enjoy Randolph

Play 18 at Cardinal Hills; Discover Historic Downtown By Mary Heyl

Now that warmer days are here, there’s no better time to explore one of Cattaraugus County’s most distinctive villages: Randolph, New York. Although its namesake is a small village in Vermont, Randolph is like no other place in the country, for where else might you pass an Amish horse and buggy as you drive past an alpaca farm on your way to a beautiful golf course? Just a twenty-minute drive from Ellicottville, Randolph is the ideal destination for day-trippers of all ages and interests. Randolph is home to one of the most popular golf courses in the area, Cardinal Hills Golf Course. Founded in 1927, this 18-hole course is a microcosm of all that is admired about Cattaraugus County’s landscape: gently rolling hills, scenic views of the mountains, and the kind of quiet that people drive for miles to find. Located at 78 Conewango Road, Cardinal Hills is a par-72 course that provides a relaxing but challenging experience for golfers of all levels. According to owner Eric Brown, the course was open for three days during the first full week of March - a record opening due to unusually warm weather! Cardinal Hills Golf Course offers activities for every member of the family, as leagues for men, women, and seniors meet every day of the week, except Fridays. On Saturdays, the Mike Benca Jr. six-week instructional golf program teaches children the basics of golf and concludes with a tournament in August. Program directors Howie VanRensselaer and Keith Alexander are looking forward to leading this growing group once again. Alexander brings years of experience to the program, as he also caddies at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina, which has hosted more golf championships than any course in the U.S. Brown is excited to share the news of Cardinal Hills’ brand new Event Center, which is set to open next spring. Due to the limited space of the Clubhouse, which features a full bar and restaurant, the construction of a larger facility for the course’s bigger tournaments was in order. However, the new Event Center will be available for so much more than tournaments ... wedding receptions, reunions, and other events that need seating for 100 or more guests.

18-Hole Golf Course, Alpaca Farm & Gift Shop, Amish Tours, Camping, Day Spa & Salon Fabric & Quilt Shop, Family Restaurants, Fresh Produce and Flower Market, Historic Inn, Ladies Clothing & Gift Shop, NYS Fish Hatchery, Sports Bar & Grill, Wine & Spirits, Yarn Shop.

www.EnjoyRandolph.org (716) 358-9701 ext 208 (35 mins. east on I-86 exit 16)

Brown welcomes visitors to his course, which offers special rates and packages for guests of Randolph’s Inn at One Bank Street. On a beautiful, warm day, the grills are fired up so golfers can grab a fresh hot dog or burger and continue on the course. Golfers are sure to meet Lola, Cardinal Hills’ English bulldog (and mascot) who oversees club entertainment and specializes in ball-retrieval. For 2016 rates, visit www.cardinalhillsny.com or call 716-358-5409. Summer is the perfect time of year to plan a visit to the Randolph DEC Fish Hatchery, located only 2 miles east of the village at 10943 Hatchery Road. The Randolph Hatchery is one of just twelve hatcheries in New York State; these hatcheries stock fish in over 1,200 public waters across the state. The Randolph Hatchery mainly raises brook, brown, and rainbow trout, and stocks public waters in Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, and Wyoming Counties. The Randolph Hatchery, which is one of the oldest hatcheries in New York, is most known for stocking brook trout, commonly known as “brookies,” which are native to New York State and are the official state fish. Visitors are welcome to explore the hatchery year ‘round as it is open daily from 9am-3:30pm. For more information, visitors can call the hatchery at 716-358-4755. If you and your family are looking for a unique adventure this weekend, consider visiting an alpaca farm. Just a glance at the alpacas at Sue Bean’s farm, A Slice of Heaven Alpacas located at 11144 Pope Road, reveals that these sweet, docile cousins of the camel are a joy to all who meet them. Although alpacas are generally shy animals, they are receptive to visitors’ strokes and curious gazes, for no other animal of that size is as soft, loving, and yes, litter-trained as the alpaca. Walk inside Sue Bean’s beautiful gift shop, Simply Natural, and explore the luxurious gift items made from alpaca fleece. Warm socks, monogrammed alpaca blankets, and handsome hand-knit gloves and scarves are just a few of the items available for purchase at Simply Natural. Find A Slice of Heaven Alpacas on Facebook to see photographs of the alpacas and their crias (babies) and new alpaca items in the gift shop. Visitors can pause for refreshment at one of several restaurants downtown, such as Pete’s Place on Main Street, which has the best burgers in town (and is a favorite spot of former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly!) Enjoy lunch and breakfast daily at Vern’s on Jamestown Street, or enjoy lunch and dinner daily at BB’s Family Restaurant at 143 Main Street. Then discover the shopping opportunities on Main Street. When we take a look at the courses afforded to golfers in the Southern Tier, we often find ourselves looking at the multitude of tracks located in Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, and Northern PA counties. One course we would be remiss if we didn’t spotlight, however, is a touch north just beyond Springville, NY, Concord Crest Golf Course. This impressive 6,000+ yard course is just a short drive from Ellicottville, and after reading on, you’ll discover why it’s worth the short trek north to get a round in.

While many courses in the Western New York area have been around for decades, there are numerous courses that have sprung up and taken root in the golf community in recent years. One of these courses is Spruce Ridge Golf Course, located on Geneses Road in Arcade, NY (Wyoming County). A short, scenic drive from many parts of the southtowns, this course features a breathtaking overlook of the village of Arcade, and takes full advantage of the rolling hills of the town in their course design.

Owned and operated by Don and Gail Ploetz, the husband and wife team along with their dedicated crew first opened Concord Crest in 2001 as a 9-hole course. The rolling hills just off of Genesee Road in East Concord played a significant role in the development of the course. With Mother Nature as key architect, the hills, valleys, and meandering streams needed little coaxing by Don to become the beautiful layout that the course now is. The course, since its first year, has been expanded to include a full 18-holes of play as well as a 3-hole practice facility and a practice putting green. Having played this course several times, I can speak to it truly being one of those rolling hill layouts, where an average golfer can appreciate the well thought out design and well maintained playing surfaces. A key detail that stands out here is the fullness of the natural layout; there is an absence of homes, roads, and other distractions that one often finds while navigating a course. The ability to take in the scenery and close out distraction is a huge plus that many golfers find enjoyable. With four tees from which to choose, the course is enjoyable for all ages and abilities as well.

Constructed a little over 15 years ago, Spruce Ridge has been owned and operated by Tim Berger, his wife and his adult children for the past six years. Upon taking it over from the previous owners, the Bergers set out to improve upon the already established course. It is a 9-hole design, playing at 3,131 yards for 9 holes and a par 72; 6,262 yards for 18 holes. The course uses the native fescue grasses and several ponds to add difficulty to the course. For those not up on their golf-grass speak, fescue grass is a growingly popular grass used in the golf industry. Most recently, it was used during the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay. This type of grass allows courses to require less water, less maintenance, while also allowing courses to firmly establish deep greens and rough ‘roughs’. This helps Spruce Ridge maintain an impressive look over their 200 acres.

Speaking to the all-ages aspect of their operation, Concord Crest is a strong advocate of promoting not just the gamesmanship of golf, but also the confidence, sportsmanship, judgment, and integrity associate with this incredible sport. Junior Golf Camps are offered in July for young golfers from ages 5-16. If you’re young at heart, but you’ve outgrown the junior camps, Concord Crest has several other opportunities for improving your game. An Adult Golf Camp runs concurrently with the Junior Camps, and from May through August, stop by the Practice Facility on Mondays from 10am-11am for mini-clinics run by a pro. New this year, if you’d like some more real-time coaching, you can also take advantage of their Play-with-a-Pro option which allows you and up to two others to play the course with the pro. You’ll receive on-thespot coaching, advice, and tips to help you fine tune each detail of your game. If you’re looking for a reason to play each week, there are several leagues throughout the week – from Ladies, Men’s, Juniors, Christian, and Mixed Leagues – there’s truly something for everyone looking to get out there and play! Other new options for 2016 include special pricing for Season Passholders including reduced rates on cart rentals. Additionally, Concord Crest is expanding their banquet options. Their dedicated and detail-oriented banquet staff are now taking reservations for weddings, baby showers, bridal showers, and other special events. Pick up the phone and call Concord Crest Golf Course at 716-592-7636, follow them on Facebook, or go to www.concordcrest.com.

Alongside the improvements the Bergers made on the course, they also sought to improve the offerings at Spruce Ridge. Upon arriving, you’ll notice a fairly new concessions building, which features all of your local golf course favorites - hot dogs, burgers, a variety of sodas and beer are available for purchase. On top of that, they have a small equipment section featuring logo’d golf shirts, caps, as well as course necessities like tee’s, balls and accessories. The course also features a variety of ways one can get out there and participate, regardless of age or ability. If you’re looking to enroll your child in lessons, Spruce Ridge is proud to participate in the First Tee program, which is known for providing essential skills and etiquette they’ll need to navigate a course. They also provide private and senior golf clinics taught by Ren Jennetti, a USGTF certified instructor. Spruce Ridge features weekly leagues for men (Monday and Tuesday), the ladies (Thursday), and mixed scrambles every Wednesday. With these improvements in their offerings, the Bergers have seen their visits grow from 3,000 rounds in 2011 to nearly 10,500 last summer! Berger also noted that Spruce Ridge will be the new home of Pioneer Central’s golf team moving forward, hosting their practices and visiting team matches. Now that you’re armed with the info, there’s one thing left to do - dust off the clubs (count them - no more than 14 in a bag!) and pick up the phone to schedule your tee time at Spruce Ridge. You can reach them by phone at 585-492-4122 to not only schedule your next tee time, but also to inquire about tournaments or group outings. Additionally, you can look up an array of impressive course photos, special lists, and scorecards on their website at spruceridgegolfcourse.com or on Facebook under ‘Spruce Ridge Golf Course’.

Whether you’re visiting Ellicottville, traveling through Cattaraugus County on the Amish Trail, or simply looking for an enjoyable place to spend a relaxing weekend, consider the city of Salamanca your destination. Located just ten minutes south of Ellicottville, Salamanca, NY is the intersection of history, Native American culture, breathtaking geography, and fun for visitors of all ages! From Ellicottville, visitors can take Route 219 down to Salamanca while enjoying scenic views of the mountains, as Allegany State Park looms just beyond the city limits. Although a city like Salamanca and the Allegheny Mountains may seem like unlikely - even contrary - neighbors, just the opposite is true. Indeed, there is a harmonious and historical bond between the landscape and Salamanca’s original inhabitants, as Salamanca is located on the reservation of the Seneca Nation of Indians, the largest tribe of the Iroquois Confederacy of Nations. Uniquely, Salamanca is the only city in the United States to lie almost entirely on a Native American Reservation. Those interested in the culture and history of the Seneca Nation will appreciate a visit to the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum located on Broad Street. This museum not only illuminates the history of the Seneca in Cattaraugus County, but also the Iroquois Nation, which consists of five other tribes across New York State. Train enthusiasts and history lovers alike will enjoy the Salamanca Rail Museum on Main Street, which is a fully restored passenger depot built in 1912. Once the hub of the hardwood industry, Salamanca was very much a railroad town in the early 20th century, a past that is beautifully portrayed in this museum, which is free to the public.

After a filling meal at Myers Steakhouse & Inn, visitors may want to retire for the night at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Salamanca, located just off I-86. What makes this hotel stand out from all the rest? It is tax-exempt, so guests pay no sales tax on their room! Every one of the 68 rooms comes complete with a 42” flat screen TV, microwave and refrigerator. Additionally, all 18 suites have a living room area, kitchen area, and pull-out sofa bed. Be sure to ask about the jacuzzi suites, as well as the kids’ suite, which has bunk beds!

Lunch and dinner specials are offered daily and include drink specials, fresh fish, steak burgers, and steaks, plus specialty cuts of steak that are special ordered weekly. Myers’ steaks (all grain-fed beef) are aged 21 to 30 days for optimum flavor. For something lighter, try one of the salads, which all feature an organic mix of Mediterranean lettuces. “We strive to do everything as all-natural as possible,” explained O’Neil, “and we even make a lot of our dressings in-house.” Indeed, all of the dips, soups, and chowders are homemade, as well as the fresh baked pies and desserts. According to O’Neil, “Our crabstuffed mushrooms are really popular, but so is everything on our menu known as comfort ‘food for the soul’ … pot roast, meatloaf, chicken and biscuits, and liver and onions.”

The Holiday Inn Express & Suites Salamanca reflects the city through its welcoming lobby, which features a Southwestern lodge theme and a stone fireplace. Artwork by Seneca artist Carson Waterman celebrates the history and culture of the Seneca tribe. Guests can take advantage of the exercise room or enjoy the heated indoor pool and whirlpool. After a good night’s sleep, indulge in a free deluxe continental breakfast. Guests are also encouraged to take advantage of the free 24hour shuttle from the hotel to the city’s gaming locations, including Seneca Gaming and Entertainment and Seneca Allegany Casino.

Get on board for a Soaring Night filled with Unforgettable Hits We sat down one-on-one with SMB’s keyboardist / vocalist Joseph Wooten

A Conversation with Joseph Wooten HULICK: Let’s start out with your Buffalo connection. You’ve been an

influential supporter of young people and the importance of music in public schools, and in fact have spoken to young people in Buffalo and have been supported by the Buffalo Public School District. How did this all come about? WOOTEN: I was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time. There was a lady from Buffalo that I communicated with on MySpace about her being in Nashville and she asked if I would do a concert in Buffalo, without the Steve Miller Band, since I also had a solo career. She was a local promoter in Buffalo. So I came up in 2008 or 2009 and Linda Appleby was at the show and she was a music teacher at the time and she asked if I would come and talk to her music students. So that’s what got me started in the schools. It went really well and she went to the School Board and they had me come up to talk to students all around the Buffalo Public School District.

HULICK: That’s a great story and I am sure the benefits kids receive from

.............................. SATURDAY | May 7, 2016

your talks are un-measurable. WOOTEN: You know, I get a lot of credit for doing that, but truthfully I am just extending what Linda Appleby has been doing pretty much her whole teaching career … trying to bring the love of music and the benefits of music, and the lessons that can be taught through music … to add to the character of the students and trying to show them, by example, a good way to be. It’s rewarding to them and it’s rewarding to me also.

HULICK: You joined the Steve Miller Band in 1993. Did you have to audition? WOOTEN: I moved to Nashville in 1990 and I happened to be doing a

Front man and founding member Steve Miller’s first album, “Children of the Future” was released in June of 1968 and that started the love affair between his music and his fans, producing hit after hit from albums including “The Joker”, “Fly Like An Eagle” & “Abracadabra”.

recording session for a guy named Chris McCarty and he was the co-writer for Steve’s hit “Swingtown”. He knew Steve’s keyboard player had just left the band and he said, “Man you’d be perfect for this gig!” So he gave me Steve’s mailing address and I sent Steve an audition CD … I’m sorry, an audition cassette tape … that’s how long ago it was. (laughs) I programmed this kind of funky loop of his song, “Abracadabra”, and I put a piano, organ and synthesizer solos on it. Then I sent another cassette of me singing acappella to a Boys II Men song because I knew the gig was for vocals also, and finally I sent him a Whitney Houston song that I sang background vocals on that was on her first record because I wanted to show him I had sang professionally before. Within two weeks I got the call asking to be in the band, but he wanted to meet me first. I tell young people it matters as much, if not more, what kind of person you are than it does how you play. So even though he liked my playing, he had to meet me first. So we met and hit it off and 23 years later I am still with the band.

The band has seen over 40 members come and go, but they have not missed a beat and continue to be one of the most sought after concert ticket draws.

HULICK: Do you like touring? WOOTEN: I have always loved touring. I love to travel anyway and I love

By Melanie Hulick For over five decades, the Steve Miller Band has led their fans on a musical journey while picking up new fans everywhere they play. Making a stop on May 7, 2016 at the Seneca Allegany Casino Events Center, they will start off what hopes to be another exciting spring and summer concert season.

I had the pleasure to talk to Joseph Wooten, who plays keyboards and sings with the band. Wooten has been with the band for 23 years; we talked about how he got the job, along with his close connection with Buffalo, and what is stacking up to be a banner year for Miller himself. I met Wooten in 2009 when I did an interview with band member Norton Buffalo, who sadly passed away about two months later. I remember thinking how kind and down to earth Wooten was and I hoped I would get the chance to interview him someday.

meeting new people and seeing new places. So to me, touring is someone paying me to do what I love to do anyway. When you walk on that stage and the house is packed and there’s all of that energy coming at you … that never gets old.

HULICK: What’s your favorite song to do live with the band? WOOTEN: By far “Fly Like An Eagle”. I always did like that song. HULICK: Steve will be a 2016 inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Wooten also has a solo career, having released two albums, “Hands of Soul” in 2007 and his current album, “Soul of Freedom”. Asking if he has any new projects in the works he replied, “I am already writing for my next album, and when I get some time off I’ll probably start recording. I also have a new website called imatteryoumatter.com. It’s a place anyone can go to and share who matters to you and see who matters to other people,” he added.

and has been nominated for the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. That must be exciting. WOOTEN: Absolutely! This year is a pretty big year for Steve and he deserves it. He’s been around for a long time and he was taught the guitar by all the right people … his literal Godfather is the legendary Les Paul. So he’s had his influence his whole life. Then he went to Chicago and played Blues with Buddy Guy, Lightnin’ Hopkins and T-Bone Walker … all the iconic classic Blues guys. What’s so great about Steve is he doesn’t mind having great musicians on stage with him … he’s not the kind of guy that thinks they have to be the best player on stage … he gets the best players he can to make his show great. He allows you to be you and that’s why I’m still part of the band 23 years later.

As far as what to expect from Wooten and Steve Miller and the band at their show May 7? That’s easy … great music, great energy and a great time!

HULICK: What’s the best part of being James Wooten? WOOTEN: WOW! I’m healthy … I live in the U.S., so I have options. I’ve

As we talked it was clear that what I thought in 2009 is exactly who Wooten is. What’s amazing about the keyboardist is how involved he is with young people and talking to them about how important music is in their lives.

been fortunate in a lot of ways … I was born to great parents and my great parents gave me great brothers and we are all musicians and get to share that. I have a nice girlfriend … my mind is still clear and I get a chance to do what I love for a living. But most of all, I feel significant and I help other people feel significant as well.

HULICK: What a great answer! WOOTEN: Thank you. I feel like I’m running for office or something. (laughs)

The Perfect Fit

FORE! GOLF NY PA ~ 2016 ANNUAL GOLF & TRAVEL EDITION ... Page 23

Takes Clubfitting to a Whole New Level Swing Into Rick’s Golf World and Schedule Your Swing Analysis Session to Find Your Perfect Club

By Spencer Timkey Golf is a unique sport. You may be playing in a foursome, but it’s your individual score that counts. You might be able to run a 4.5 in the 40-yard dash, but that doesn’t mean you’re good within 40 yards of the green. It’s a mental game of inches … the 6 inches between your ears. One might think that a golf club is just a golf club; that, because a driver is $100 more than another, it means you’ll instantly become Jordan Spieth off the tee. This perception couldn’t be farther from the truth. Enter Rick’s Golf World in Olean, NY. Helping golfers find the right clubs since 1990, it’s a full-service shop that should be a destination for any golfer serious about their swing. With name brands such as Taylor Made, Ping, Puma, Cobra, Callaway, Titleist and FootJoy, owner Pete Lisi has built the business into the reputable one it is today. One of the coolest features offered by any shop in the area, the FlightScope system (on-site at Rick’s Golf World) uses radar to track the actual flight of the golf ball after your swing. Developed by South African electronics engineer Henri Johnson in 1989, FlightScope uses a Doppler radar system to record your ball movement, backspin, flight path, club head speed/angle and much more. The company originally (and currently still) develops defense radar systems for countries around the world.

Western New York Southtowns Scenic Byway Our mission is to promote economic development and community pride through the thoughtful stewardship of the natural, scenic, cultural, historic, and recreational resources of the byway region.

Lisi bought the system in February 2013 and said it was an instant success. With ample space inside the shop for a “BIG” swing cage, the customer doesn’t feel like he or she is swinging the club in a closet. A 210” diagonal screen allows customers to watch where their ball goes after they hit it. This system tracks the ball and swing separately, which gives Lisi improved ability to work with his customers to find them the perfect club. Here’s how it works: a customer can come in and try a bunch of different clubs (specifically, drivers). After the customer hits a couple balls off of different drivers, he’ll pull up a screen that shows the different clubs’ “angle of attack” and “carry distance” - so if someone is hitting a Callaway driver 10 yards further and straighter than a Taylor Made one, then they’ve found the winner. Fitting is $50, but Lisi will knock that off the retail price if the customer so chooses to purchase it. The FlightScope system is also good for ‘club gapping’. Lisi explains it this way: “Let’s say you hit your 3-wood 240 yards and your 4-iron 190. We need to find you a club that you can hit at that consistent 200-210 yard range. The customer can try out some hybrids or different clubs to find that sweet spot.” There are different camera-based systems that take individual photographs of the ball’s flight path, but FlightScope is only one of two that actually implements a radar system to track it. Rick’s Golf World is a full-service shop that offers regripping, fitting and anything else a golfer could ask for. If you want to really figure out the best clubs to buy, don’t buy them from some website because they’re cheaper. Head to Rick’s, get the best bang for your buck and support a small business. Rick’s Golf World is open year-round. Pop into the shop, 228 N.Union St., Olean, NY 14760, or give Pete a shout at 716-373-6400.

TAKE THE SCENIC LOOP

WELCOME TO THE WNY SOUTHTOWNS SCENIC BYWAY

The 108-mile scenic loop unites Erie and Cattaraugus Counties into a regional attraction for tourists and citizens of the area By Mary Heyl

The beauty of Cattaraugus County’s mountainous landscape is no secret to those who are proud to call this area home. Now, recent legislation has provided the opportunity for numerous others to explore all that the Ellicottville area has to offer, including scenic drives, historical landmarks, and seasonal recreation, through the expansion of the Western New York Southtowns Scenic Byway (WNYSSB). The byway, which runs through southern Erie County and now down into northern Cattaraugus County, is an exciting resource for both residents and visitors to learn more about what this area has to offer, and it promises to bring a significant boost to area tourism and the local economy. In 2002, a small group of community members led by Robert Lennartz planned a designation for U.S. Route 219 from Orchard Park to Springville to showcase and protect the natural beauty of Buffalo’s Southtowns. After plenty of meetings, research and legislation, the State Scenic Byways Advisory Board approved the WNYSSB, and so the non-profit organization was born! Until December 2015, the WNYSSB formed a triangle from Orchard Park to the Village of East Aurora via Route 20A, down to the Town of Concord and over to Springville via Route 240, then back up through Boston and Chestnut Ridge Park to Orchard Park via Route 219. Now the byway has expanded down Route 240 through West Valley and over to Ellicottville via Route 242. Once drivers are in Ellicottville, they can take Route 219 up to Springville (where the original byway left off) and drive through the Town of Ashford. Although the year ‘round natural beauty of Western New York is reason enough to explore Buffalo’s Southtowns and beyond, the WNYSSB provides visitors with lots of reasons to travel this route and make several stops along the way. Orchard Park’s Quaker Meetinghouse, built in 1817, was the first house of worship of any denomination in Erie County, and was also the site of a surprising amount of activity during the Underground Railroad era and the Women’s Suffrage Movement. Signage to the Town of Aurora’s West Falls Dam Site and Veterans Memorial teaches visitors about Cazenovia Creek’s vital role in providing power for the grain, lumber and woolen mills. Additionally, the WNYSSB guides visitors to Griffin Mills, where the Presbyterian Church served as a stop on the Underground Railroad. The Town of Concord, which is known as Erie County’s gateway to the Allegheny Mountains, is home to Zoar Valley, the ultimate destination with its 2,847-acre area, which includes an 8.4-mile canyon with 20 waterfalls. The expanded byway has a lot to teach visitors about the history of northern Cattaraugus County; however, there is plenty for area residents to learn, too! The byway draws attention to the Town of Ashford, which was founded in 1824 by a Revolutionary War veteran, and then takes visitors through West Valley to the junction of NY 240 and NY 242, where railroad development catapulted the economies of the southtowns. One of the main attractions of the byway is Griffis Sculpture Park, which has been the home of incredible works of art since 1960. The expanded byway culminates in the Village of Ellicottville, where visitors can experience the year ‘round activity of the ski slopes, golf course, and various summer and fall festivals. Lennartz, who is president of the WNYSSB, explained that even though the expanded byway was approved just a few months ago, this expansion has been in the works for quite some time. According to Lennartz, “To get a byway started and even expanded takes a long time. There are many steps that are part of the process before we even get to the point of legislation.” In 2013, the WNYSSB first began working on the expansion into northern Cattaraugus County, and a significant first step was getting the support and agreement of all the towns and counties involved. The support of the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce was instrumental to the byway’s expansion, as well as the cooperation of the New York State Department of Transportation. The many conversations and meetings involved in the expansion culminated in legislation sponsored by Senator Catharine Young and Assemblyman Joseph Giglio, who delivered Senate Bill 5326/Assembly Bill 7713 to Governor Cuomo, who then signed the 37 mile expansion into law in December. According to Lennartz, the impact this expansion will have on northern Cattaraugus County is immeasurable, as the new towns that the byway now includes are bound to see the boost in tourism that the original southtowns have experienced over the past several years. “This is a great opportunity to increase visitors’ knowledge of Cattaraugus County and all it has to offer, including its connection to Erie County,” Lennartz said. In a statement released on December 7, 2015, Senator Young explained, “Cattaraugus County has a myriad of natural resources, historical locations, and recreational opportunities that are a draw for tourists. Expansion of the Western New York Southtowns Scenic Byway will provide another avenue to showcase the community to residents and visitors alike. The byway’s expansion will also inject a boost into the region’s economy as shops and restaurants along the route see an uptick in visitors.” Indeed, the 37 additional miles encourage visitors to travel back and forth along the byway and possibly extend their visit to the area. Longer stays mean more business for area restaurants and accommodations, as well as increased traffic to events and tourist destinations across southern Erie County and northern Cattaraugus County. Lennartz is pleased to share the news that Holiday Valley will be hosting a news conference to promote the expanded byway on Friday, April 22 at noon. There, Senator Young and more than twenty local officials will gather to launch the newly expanded byway in Ellicottville and celebrate the incredible opportunity this is for the entire community. To learn more about the WNYSSB including news, photos, and opportunities to get involved, visit WNYSSB.org or visit Facebook.com/ScenicByway. The latest brochure, which includes the expanded map, is available to view at https://issuu.com/wnyssb.

BLAISDELL PRO AM SET FOR JULY 24-25, 2016 The Blaisdell Pro Am Invitational returns to the Pennhills Club July 24-25, with an increased prize purse of $100,000. More than 140 PGA pros are expected to compete on July 24 to qualify for the 30 open pro spots in the Pro Am on July 25. Tickets to the viewing gallery on July 24 will be available through the Pennhills Club, 146 Pennhills Drive, Bradford, Pennsylvania. Sponsored by Zippo in memory of Zippo founder George G. Blaisdell, the Blaisdell Pro Am brings together 30 PGA pros and 90 local amateurs to compete for $100,000 in prize money. The invitational is officially sanctioned and recorded by the Western New York Section of the Professional Golfer’s Association of America. Blaisdell was an avid golfer and strong supporter of the Pennhills Club. Both saw their achievements realized in the late 1930s: Blaisdell with the invention and success of his windproof lighter, and the Pennhills Club with the completion of the grounds.

The Pennhills Club of Bradford will play host to the Blaisdell Pro Am Invitational this July.

Famed amateur golfer, golf writer and course architect Walter Travis designed a full 18 holes for Pennhills, and was also responsible for the Golf Digest and Golf Magazine award-winning courses at Garden City Golf Club in Garden City, New York, and Ekwanok Country Club in Manchester, Vermont. American architect Clifford C. Wendehack planned out Pennhill’s brick and slate Tudor-manor style clubhouse. The club is nestled in the forested mountains of McKean County, providing an unparalleled setting for the Travis designs, the trademarks of which are omnipresent throughout the course - undulating landscape, strategic use of large old trees and natural rock formations, and a design path that entices players to use nearly every club in their arsenal. Jake Northrup, Pennhill’s head in-house PGA golf professional, is coordinating the tournament and has invited some of the best professional golfers from the region to compete. “The Blaisdell Pro Am is rapidly rising to become one of the premier PGA events in the New York/Pennsylvania region,” Northrup said. “With the generously increased prize money and growing registration interest from both professional and amateur golfers alike, our beautiful and challenging course is certainly getting the attention it deserves.” For additional information on the Blaisdell Pro Am gallery tickets, membership or private event information, call 814-368-6159 or visit pennhillsclub.com.

BIG EXCITEMENT AT THE KINZUA BRIDGE STATE PARK Enjoy the scenic views when you play Kane Country Club.

An exciting new addition to the Kinzua Bridge State Park, home of the Kinzua Sky Walk, has been added this year - the Kinzua Visitors Center. Located at the edge of the Kinzua Gorge, the new 11,000 sq. ft. building has two exhibit halls with displays showcasing the 3 E’s - Engineering, Energy and the Environment. Here, visitors can learn about the innovative can-do spirit of General Thomas L. Kane and engineer Octave Chanute. When constructed in 1882, the Kinzua Viaduct was the longest and highest railroad viaduct in the world. This engineering marvel enabled trains full of timber and coal to reach markets in the Great Lakes. The bridge was prefabricated in Phoenixville, near Philadelphia, and transported to the site for erection. Once the sandstone foundation piers were in place, 125 men, working 10-hour days, completed the construction in just 94 days. Standing 301 feet tall (24 feet higher than the Brooklyn Bridge), the Viaduct quickly became a tourist destination for Sunday excursions. Walking out on the bridge was the next best thing to flying. But in 1900, the locomotive and railroad cars hauling coal and timber across the Viaduct had become larger and heavier. A stronger steel bridge was required. Using 6.7 million pounds of steel, held together by 895,000 rivets, workers erected a new bridge to replace the original. The Kinzua Viaduct was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977 and the National Register of Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks in 1982. Pine Acres is a 72-par golf course located at the edge of the Allegheny National Forest.

THE POWER OF NATURE

In 2003, engineers and skilled bridge builders were hard at work on a $12 million repair project to reinforce the aging structure, when the sky went black and winds rushed in. A

FORE! GOLF NY PA ~ 2016 ANNUAL GOLF & TRAVEL EDITION ... Page 27 Huge steel towers flank the entrance to the new Kinzua Visitors Center in Mt. Jewett, PA. Inside, visitors can interact with various displays focusing on the 3 E’s - Engineering, Energy and the Environment. After your tour, head out and “walk the tracks across the sky.” When you get to the end, peer down through the partial glass floor; it’s an experience you’ll never forget.

Visitors will have a stunning view of the Kinzua Sky Walk from inside the lobby.

tornado tore through the forest heading straight for the Viaduct. Hundreds of trees where ripped from their roots and 11 of the bridge’s 20 towers were lifted, twisted and thrown onto the valley floor. Six towers remained standing on the park side. Bridge designer C.R. Grimm had predicted his creation would last 100 years. And he was right. Grimm’s design used roller expansion bearings where the towers were anchored to the masonry foundation piers. Engineers confirmed after the tornado that it was the original 1882 anchor bolts and collar coupling assemblies, which mated the old bolts to the later 1900 construction which had failed. Within 30 seconds, nature had brought the mighty span to its knees, and this is depicted in the energy part of the displays at the new Kinzua Visitors Center.

TRAIL CENTRAL - HUNDREDS OF MILES OF TRAILS Trails in McKean County include both traditional hiking and biking trails, along with ATV trails, water trails, shopping trails, history trails, and food and wine trails. Hiking/biking trails range from the grand-daddy of all trails, the North Country Trail - the longest trail in the United States - to short, family-friendly trails like Timberdoodle Flats, an interpretive birding trail in the Allegheny National Forest. A favorite scenic trail is the Marilla Bridges Trail, a 1-mile loop with forest and water vistas. Highlights along the trail include the Erik Benjamin Covered Bridge, which spans the spillway of the Marilla Reservoir, three rustic wooden trestle bridges, and a delightful gazebo located at the southwest corner of the trail. Use is non-motorized only, but fishermen and kayakers can also enjoy this favorite water spot which offers free public access for recreation. The trailhead is located along Rt. 346, five miles west of the City

of Bradford. Downloadable trail maps and detailed descriptions of the over 600 miles of trails in the Allegheny National Forest can be viewed at visitANF.com.

The Eldred WWII Museum: An Important Lesson in History

(The following is an excerpt from “To Honor, Showcase and Educate”, originally printed in The Summer Local, September 2015 edition, published by DesignPerks, the same publisher of FORE! Golf NY PA)

By Spencer Timkey

to be horrified, they need to be shocked, they need to know what happened.”

It is called the greatest conflict in human history. Over 55 million people dead. Entire cities decimated. Continents ravaged. Families torn apart. It was a defining moment of humanity’s short time on Earth. The entire world was at war.

On display, you see photos of human beings resembling skeletons. You see a black SS or Schutzstaffel - hat with the death skull insignia. You see a Nazi Luger pistol, whips, crude scissors.

A byproduct of the abysmal handling of ‘The Great War,’ World War II has become a legendary segment of our history. It was, in the truest sense of the term, good vs. evil. Across four continents, the United States, Britain and our allies fought valiantly to beat back the tyranny of the Axis. To ensure that this never happens again, we must educate ourselves so that we may see the warning signs before it’s too late.

“This room is meant to show people that this actually happened. There are some who still don’t believe the Holocaust happened. Younger people need to be made aware, so something like this never, ever happens again.”

I took the short drive from Ellicottville to Eldred, PA last summer to visit the Eldred World War II Museum. Most of us have a connection to the conflict (Grandpa Timkey drove Sherman tanks across the European Theatre). I highly encourage all our readers to make the trip. Eldred’s Museum is one of the finest and most impressive I have ever visited. Upon arrival, I’m greeted by Steve Appleby, the museum’s curator and director. Already, I can tell I’m in for a treat. His knowledge of the war is vast; his enthusiasm - infectious. “Originally, there was a plant in Eldred that built explosives for the oil industry,” he said, referencing Pennsylvania’s heritage in the oil and gas business. “In 1940, the British asked for our (the United States’) help, because they couldn’t produce enough munitions to keep fighting the Nazis. Remember, this was before we had entered the war.” At this point, President Roosevelt knew that sooner or later, push would come to shove. Knowing full well what the Nazis were capable of and recognizing that the Brits desperately needed our help, he enacted programs like ‘Lend & Lease’ and ‘Carriers for Bases’ - strategies that still appealed to the American populace’s desire for isolationism, all the while assisting Britain’s fight to stave off Nazi invasion. “The plant was converted into a munitions factory,” Appleby said. “It made 3-inch mortars, 2-inch smoke mortars and brass bronze fuses for bombs. The population of Eldred at that point was around 800, but at its peak, the factory employed around 1,500. Most of them were women and young girls, which is why the statues you see are of women. In total, it churned out over 8 million pieces of ordnance.” Sunlight dances through the two stained glass windows that lie at the back of the first room we visit, which is a dazzling dedication to Normandy, shipping and transportation, North Africa and the Navy. The dominant showcase of the room is a circular, glass-enclosed model of Omaha Beach at Normandy - complete with ships and ‘hedgehogs’ (the steel X-shaped defenses the Nazis placed on the beaches to penetrate landing craft). There’s even a Mason Jar of sand from the beach itself. We head into the newly-constructed hallway connecting the original building to the old furniture store. It’s called Mitchell Paige Hall, a brilliant dedication to one of the most incredible men of the war. “Paige had 33 men and 4 Browning machine guns on a hill at Guadalcanal,” Appleby explained. “Close to 4,000 soldiers of the elite 2nd Division Sendai stormed his position. At dawn the next day, the Japanese attempted to take the hill again - this time, the number is around 800-900. He grabbed the 54-pound Browning (which severely burned his arm), two belts of ammo, and charged down the hill. He was shot multiple times. The Japanese scattered. One man’s courage saved the airfield on Guadalcanal.” Paige’s valor earned him a Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest and most prestigious award one can receive. Retired in California, he visited the Eldred Museum 6 times. After his death, he donated all of his Marine belongings to the exhibit. In the speaker’s room, there’s a statue of him dedicated in his honor. It’s never easy seeing things and reading about what transpired in Hitler’s death camps, but it’s the most important thing we were fighting against. Fighting the Nazis wasn’t just about preventing the Third Reich from taking over the entire world … it was defeating the ideals that the regime stood for. “We need this exhibit,” Appleby said. “It’s shocking. It’s supposed to be shocking. People need

The Holocaust exhibit hits deep, but that’s what it’s supposed to do. We leave it, and enter ‘The Blue Room,’ which has a heavy emphasis on the Pacific Theatre (and a blue floor to match). Here, I find some of the coolest exhibits of any World War II museum I’ve ever been to. There is a vintage Dodge combat truck. There is a cardboard tank made by a local school. There is a portion of a submarine with an actual periscope! “The Navy was kind enough to donate this to us,” Appleby says of the periscope. Upon entering the submarine (which I find out was built by a local BOCES class), the exhibit comes alive. “Torpedoes Away!” a voice yells, while lights flash around me. I look through the periscope to see the forested landscape of the Allegheny Mountains behind the museum. While I’m spotting for enemy destroyers with the periscope, he goes into a display and pulls out something I’ve never seen before, and most certainly won’t see again. “This is a gyroscope, or the tracking device at the front of the torpedo that keeps it on track towards its target,” he explains. “I called Sperry - the manufacturer - to see what I can learn about it. I eventually spoke to the president of the company, who immediately offered me $40,000 for it. I told him, “I can’t! It’s the museum’s.” He ups the ante to $50,000, stressing the company would love it for its own personal museum. Again, I say no. As it turns out, there’s only one other known to be in existence - and that’s at this little known place called the Smithsonian.” After we finish cruising around the Blue Room - which also features helmets and hats from each branch of the military, one exhibit on Iwo Jima and another featuring Victory in Europe Day we go into the Tank Room. Here, there’s an authentic mobile command post, complete with a radio, German phrase book, typewriter and Officer’s mess kit. Dominating the room, however, is a giant battlefield. “Typically, we have 20-25 remote-controlled tanks that can be driven around, so the kids can stay occupied while the adults read through the exhibits on the walls,” Appleby said. But not without a wry grin, he added that “a lot of times, we find the adults having more fun with the tanks than the kids do.” The final stop of our tour takes us upstairs to the Robert Andersen Memorial Library, which boasts over 14,000 books, hundreds of DVD interviews, posters, newspaper clippings, photos, countless uniforms from all branches and even a gold-plated commemorative M-1 Garand rifle. He leads me to one of the walls, where we look at a display of ‘Trench Art’ - things soldiers made for their sweethearts, oft-times out of munitions casings. There’s a case dedicated to Zippo Lighters, famously made in Bradford, PA. No generation will possibly be able to match what the Greatest Generation did. In the span of four short years, the United States fought - and defeated - two very different enemies on two very different fronts. The industry and production of tanks, bullets, planes, clothing and food will never be replicated. It propelled us into becoming one of the world’s two superpowers. It was one of the defining moments of our nation’s history. “We want to make sure that people who come here understand just what kind of sacrifices these men and women made,” Appleby said. “That’s the mission of the museum. To honor, showcase and educate.” As Santayana said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” The Eldred World War II Museum is located at 201 Main Street, Eldred, PA. Admission is $5 for adults, children 18 and under enter free, and $3 for group tours. It’s open Tuesday through Saturday 10am-4pm and on Sundays 1pm-4pm. More information can be found at www.eldredpawwiimuseum.com or by calling 814-225-2220.
