Time to plaster yourself in pink! Together with The Boardroom, Holiday Valley is hosting their 4th annual B4BC (Boarding for Breast Cancer) Board-A-Thon on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012. Come enjoy a day of fun and education, and help prove why Holiday Valley has been named the number one resort fundraiser for B4BC in the country! The B4BC initiative boasts early detection, breast cancer prevention and encourages an active lifestyle to help support the ongoing battle against breast cancer – one of the leading causes of death in women. Events throughout the resort will include special riding and park clinics for women, a

park contest open to men and women, local shop demos, a cancer awareness outreach booth, silent and Chinese auctions and an awards reception party. Proceeds from Holiday Valley’s B4BC event will go to the Buffalo area’s Women’s Oncology Program at Camp Good Days and B4BC awareness programs. Over the past three years, B4BC at Holiday Valley has raised over $30k. Pat Morgan, Youth Marketing Coordinator and Terrain Park Manager for Holiday Valley said, “Last year’s goal of $15k was reached, so we’re shooting for a total donation of $20k for 2012.” An even bigger “tent city” on the plaza will be featured this year, with both men’s and women’s ski and snowboard demos

available for use throughout the day. The plaza will also house the B4BC outreach booth and several vendors from the area. While you’re gallivanting around the resort, don’t forget to follow the pink balloons to the upstairs of the Main Chalet, which will be filled with auction items. Chinese and silent auctions will start at noon for unique items and several themed baskets. “Expect items from local sports teams like the Bills and the Sabres, golf equipment, local Ellicottville business items and bundles of products from brands supporting the event,” said Morgan. Dream “The Mountain Crew was incredibly busy all spring, summer and fall. Between the Sky High Adventure Park and Mountain Coaster, construction of the new SnowPine Quad chairlift, installation of several snowmaking upgrades and many other fine tuning projects, we barely had time to come up for air!” stated Steve Crowley, Holiday Valley Mountain Operations Director. Their hard work has paid off. Skiers are now enjoying all the benefits of these summer projects, most notably the doubled capacity of the new SnowPine Quad chairlift, which services a system of trails and enhances access to the ski in/ski out condos.

A ribbon cutting ceremony and champagne toast were held at Holiday Valley Resort on Saturday, Jan. 7 to celebrate the opening of the new SnowPine Quad Chairlift. The $650,000 chairlift is Holiday Valley’s 10th quad chairlift and was constructed over the summer by the resort’s Mountain Crew to replace the existing double chair. The lift is 2,100 feet in length and has a capacity of 1,600 skiers per hour. This new lift almost doubles the capacity of the former double chair and enhances the ski-in, ski-out access to the SnowPine Village condominiums. Bear Cub, a beginner trail that was constructed prior to the 2010-‘11 season is serviced by this lift and was outfitted with a snowmaking pipeline and hydrants for the 2011-‘12 season. The lower section of Bear Cub was also extended for easier access to the base of the SnowPine lift. The lift also services the double black diamond slope, the Wall, as well as the intermediate slopes of Bobsled, Catwalk and Last Chance. A completely new drive terminal was installed at the base, and the towers, cross arms, and the return station were replaced to accommodate the larger gauge of a four-passenger chair. Holiday Valley Mountain Manager Jim Curtis led the Holiday Valley Mountain Crew in the construction of the lift. Holiday Valley is one of only a few ski areas in the country to construct their own lifts. The advantage is that the Mountain Crew is familiar with every aspect of the lift and can maintain the lift properly and make repairs efficiently. Located in Western New York, Holiday Valley is a leading eastern North American winter resort. Fifty-eight slopes and 13 lifts (including three high-speed quads) are spread over four distinct faces that offer challenging steeps, gentle cruisers, glades, fun terrain parks and a mountain coaster. Three beautiful base lodges provide full service dining, marketplaces and coffee bars, as well as ski and snowboard rentals and repair, two ski shops and four bars. Fantastic children’s ski programs and on-site daycare allows for convenience and flexibility for families. Or, stop by The Boardroom, just around the corner at the base of Holiday Valley and make a donation. “B4BC has been a mainstay in the action sports industry for many years,” according to Morgan. “Knowing Ellicottville is truly a special community where things of this nature tend to root deeply and flourish, it has proved to be a great addition to the mix.” In an effort to raise additional money than previous years, Morgan and his team of heavy hitters put together the first annual Shredd and Ragan Poker Prowl, as an added B4BC fundraiser that involved the village of Ellicottville off-the-slopes. With combined efforts from Shredd and Ragan from 103.3 The Edge radio station, Holiday Valley and The Boardroom, an additional $1,600 was raised through this “bar crawl” event, which took place last month. “Shredd and Ragan were wonderful to partner with, and The Edge really stepped up by providing a full staff to manage the event. We can’t thank them enough,” Morgan said.

Little Pink PowderRoom Cocktail Party Goes Big-Time How the B4BC Initiative Ended Up in Ellicottivlle By Anjanette Nicolazzo

Samantha Timkey, store manager of The Boardroom and PowderRoom, is one of the behind-the-scenes collaborators of the Boarding for Breast Cancer initiative in Ellicottville. Many may wonder, how did a nationwide, action sports event such as B4BC come to our resort? It all began during a casual chat four years ago between Timkey and her Burton Snowboard rep at the time, Susanne Steck. With The Boardroom having their own women’s specific section, The PowderRoom, Steck thought it would be a fun idea to host a “ladies night” party at their shop location. “After brainstorming for a few weeks, we decided to turn it into a fundraiser for B4BC, a cause that we supported whole heartedly,” said Timkey, sharing that Amanda Greene, Timkey’s friend and the current East Coast Regional Ambassador for B4BC, was stoked to be a part of it and couldn’t wait to get the organization involved. With the help of Holiday Valley Youth Marketing Coordinator Pat Morgan and everyone at Holiday Valley, this little pink cocktail party turned into a major event at the resort, with on-hill activities, a live auction, awards ceremony, and so much more. “It was kind of like all of the puzzle pieces fell into place; the timing was good and we knew all the right people,” said Timkey. “And, our store has partnered with B4BC and their ‘Shred the Love’

program in which we are selling B4BC merchandise - water bottles, tote bags, stickers, wristbands, etc. … it has been very successful thus far.” Expect to see The Boardroom at Holiday Valley’s B4BC on Feb. 11 with a tent stocked full of demos for both men and women. Meet Timkey and the rest of her family at the awards/auction section of the event. Timkey commented, “With the help of all of Morgan’s incredible event planning skills, we still continue to come up with new ways to stoke.” Initially, Timkey began her B4BC fundraising efforts by selling paper bras and hanging them around the store; the bigger the donation, the bigger the “cup size.” Since then, she has switched gears, reaching out to all her manufacturers, who have been more than generous by sending boxes upon boxes of merchandise to raffle and auction. “We are beyond lucky to work with the people that we do,” Timkey commented. “Every year they go completely above and beyond - it really makes the legwork worth it when you have so many great people supporting you. The satisfaction that we get is beyond words. Not only is B4BC benefitting, but a portion of the money raised goes to Camp Good Days at Kueka Lake, so it stays local.” The support from local businesses, residents and visitors is incredible. “It just feels good at the end of the day, to think that you’ve helped make a difference,” Timkey exclaimed.

Results from Round One at Holiday Valley

The Eastern Snowboard League dropped in on Holiday Valley Resort on Jan. 21, riding a wave of enthusiasm in its sophomore season. Adding to the stoke was the fact that the weather had finally started to cooperate on the East Coast, with the upstate New York region recently reaping the benefits of seasonable temperatures and snowfall. The concept remained the same - go big, or go home. With a venue built to match this mission statement, the 70+ registrants needed to decide whether they would compete in the Destroyer division for cold hard cash and points towards a slot in the annual Snowboarder Magazine event, or compete for product and points towards a hat to wax sponsorship in the Youngblood and Aura (women’s) divisions. With the event segmented into two categories (jump and jib), the sunny day commenced with Destroyers taking to the air, launching themselves over the 45’ step-up built by Holiday Valley’s 42/78 Park Crew. A dogfight ensued, with riders like Billy Keil, Peter Pape (2011 Destroyer champion), Marcus Stephens and Cutler Whitely throwing multiple variations of 7’s, making the illustrious panel of judges’ task even more difficult. The Youngblood and Aura divisions wouldn’t go quietly, however, with last year’s reigning champ Dylan Thomas, and Aura division standout Carly Harrington laying down some solid laps. With some clear leaders established heading into the jib section, the opportunity

arose for the “rail kids” to level the playing field. Billy Keil was absolutely unstoppable, landing bolts on nearly every trick. Riders like Chris Naugle, Cody Voit and Travis Jones did their best to upset the apple cart in the Destroyer division. Erica Page threw down some ridiculous attempts in the Aura division battle, crushing 270’s on the down-flat-down, all the while Dylan Thomas continued his domination despite solid performances by Eric Dimarco and Christian Canfield. It’s cold outside. The ground is frozen … (finally!) ... and thanks to some amazing snowmaking, there’s plenty of snow on the slopes. Ellicottville wouldn’t want it any other way this time of year … and neither would penguins. Slide on down to Holiday Valley on Saturday, Feb. 25 for the resort’s annual Penguin Paddle event. Real penguins? No. People dressed as penguins? Yes! It’s easy! The morning of, head over to the base of Yodeler between 9am and 1pm to purchase your $1.00 black garbage bag. Sign up for your race category, slip the “penguin garb” over your winter gear, and execute your plan of action down Yodeler slope “penguin style.” The racing begins at 1pm sharp. Close to 500 participants come out each February to carry on this tradition, which more importantly acts as the primary fundraiser for Holiday Valley’s Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program (LASP). For those not familiar with LASP, it provides assistance for mentally and physically challenged students of all ages to experience the thrill of skiing at Holiday Valley. “We are a not-for-profit organization, and all donations are tax-deductible,” states Mary Ellen Racich, LASP Director. “We started the program in 1988 with four instructors. We now have 50 volunteer instructors and do an average of 250 lessons per year.” According to Racich, students come from all over the U.S. and Canada - as far away as Texas and Maine. “We also have a scholarship program available to individuals in Cattaraugus, Chautauqua and Allegany Counties who are handicapped and can demonstrate need.”

SUPPORT THE CAUSE

Whether you plan on taking part in the Penguin Paddle races, or just watching from the “slide”lines, there will be plenty of action going on at the base of Yodeler throughout the day. “We will set up an auction – to start about 11am – where people can bid on items,” states Racich. “We have a barrel of wine, ski clothes, pictures, posters, and gift cards from restaurants and shops in both Ellicottville and Buffalo … there are approximately 130 items to bid on.” Other fundraising activities will include a hot lunch served from 11:30am til gone, the sale of Penguin Paddle Buttons, and a sweet raffle with some really stellar prizes. “Buttons are on sale now for $1.00 each, and will be available the day of the Paddle as well,” says Racich. “Raffle tickets are also on sale now. One for $5.00 or five for $20.00. First prize is a Holiday Valley season pass; 2nd prize is a Southwest Airlines voucher for $500; and 3rd prize is a pair of high performance skis. We’ll conduct the drawing that day at 2pm. You do not need to be present to win.” Money raised from the Penguin Paddle will be used by LASP to purchase new specialized ski equipment and to help keep the older equipment in working order. “We are looking to purchase a new bi-unique sit ski,” states Racich. “The two we presently have are 15-20 years old. The cost is about $4,500.” According to Racich, the program also spends funds to train instructors. “Over 50% of our instructors are now certified by the Professional Ski Instructors of America. They go through extensive training and testing.” Among their roster of students, LASP volunteers also set aside one special day each season for Veterans. Disabled Veterans come to Holiday Valley from Buffalo and Cleveland for a day of lessons, lunch and fun – just a small way of saying thanks for the huge sacrifices they have made for our country. This year’s Veterans Day will be held Feb. 22.

“THE MOVEMENT” HELPS RAISE FUNDS

Get a jump-start on supporting the Lounsbury Program. Committee members will be hosting a special viewing of “The Movement,” a Warren Miller film, on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 7pm inside the Tamarack Club. The film focuses on five handicapped skiers and is currently up for an award at the Sundance Film Festival. “We are not charging for this event,” states Racich. “We are just asking for donations at the door.” The Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program strives to provide an exhilarating experience for its students in a sport which many of us love and perhaps take for granted. The snow sports industry is tough to figure out. We’re barely three weeks into winter and local shops are already starting their buying cycles for next season. SIA (SnowSports Industries America) is the national medium between companies and buyers. It plans and promotes trade shows where shop owners can go and view each company’s product a year in advance. For the past few years, the regional mid-Atlantic show has been held in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Now, before you jump to the “sounds more like a party than work” assumption, know that there are lots of companies, lots of buyers and only a few days to show everything. Typically, appointments start first thing in the morning and buyers are booked all through the day. However, it gives shops the opportunity to see product samples in person - not just in a catalog or on a PDF. Most importantly, it provides a round-table setting where the company representatives and shop buyers can sit and talk about what’s hot - and what’s not. Jay Nuzzo, the mid-Atlantic rep for Mervin Manufacturing (Lib Tech, GNU, Roxy, Quiksilver), said the show in Atlantic City is good for everyone. “Atlantic City is great because it’s a centralized location (for most shops) and gives buyers the chance to see the product up close,” he said. “There is a lot of energy this year, which is surprising considering the lack of snow nationwide.” The past few years, the Atlantic City show was a little slower because of how new it was (shows used to be in different spots around New Jersey). However, Nuzzo said a lot more accounts made their way to the Las Vegas of the East Coast. “I was booked solid every day of the show,” Nuzzo said. “That part is great, because my crew and I can show every piece in our line. Whether it be boards or jackets, buyers are a lot more confident writing their orders when they see the product in person.” Since alternative camber blew onto the scene a few seasons ago, there have been exponential changes in snowboard design and construction. NOW Bindings, which will release its first retail products next year, was founded by snowboarding legend JF Pelchat. NOW uses the same idea as a skateboard truck; when riding a skateboard or longboard, the rider needs minimal effort to turn - because you’re digging your toes/heels into the turn. Pelchat and crew created a binding that uses this same concept. It’s a revolutionary technology idea that - depending on its success - could see other companies use similar designs in the future. Although not new, splitboards are also gaining serious momentum. The concept behind the splitboard is cutting a snowboard down the middle; in effect, you are creating two skis that you attach skins to and walk up the mountain. When a rider gets to the top, he takes the bindings off and skins off, puts the board back together, puts the bindings back on the proper way and shreds down. Mike and Jodie Timkey, owners of The Boardroom Snowboard Shop in Ellicottville, made the trek to New Jersey in January, in place of attending SIA’s national show, which is in Denver. “The Atlantic City show is awesome because we don’t have to take time out of the store and fly to Denver during peak season,” Mike said. “It took Jodie and I six hours to get to New Jersey, and we saw all of our companies. It’s so much easier writing an order when you see that boot or binding in person.” Atlantic City is known for gambling, beaches and bad decisions. However, the trade show gives local shops the opportunity to see next year’s product. Unlike the cast, crew and developers of MTV’s Jersey Shore, the SIA show is a good thing that happens in New Jersey.

Phoenix Program: Born Out of Love for Helping Others Volunteers Share their Enthusiasm of Snowsports; HoliMont to Host International Race Feb. 11

Most of you have probably heard of the legend of the Phoenix. A firebird from ancient mythologies, the Phoenix is said to erupt into flames at the end of its life - only to rise from its own ashes, born anew. The moral of the story? Don’t try to hold anyone back from fulfilling what they want to do. We live, work and breath the ski and snowboard industries in Ellicottville. These sports are challenging and frustrating, especially when we have trouble mastering them. Take a moment and put yourself in the shoes of those who want to learn the sport but are hindered by disabilities, and imagine the struggles that they go through. But just like the ancient mythological bird, they refuse to be held back from rising up above the challenge. Enter the HoliMont Snowsports School’s Phoenix Adaptive Program. Born out of a love for helping others and challenging those people to succeed, the Phoenix Program couples volunteers and people with disabilities who yearn to ski. Now in it’s 16th year of existence, it is safe to say the program has gone above and beyond. Founded by HoliMont Snowsports instructor Chuck Richardson in 1996, the Phoenix Program provides yet another movement the community can rally around. “I had some background working with people of special needs,” Richardson said. “When I started the program, I had one student. We had 22 sign up for this year’s program. The growth has been fueled because people love seeing others succeed.” One of the best things about the Phoenix Program is that it brings in all facets of people with disabilities. From young (there was a

4-year-old boy there this year) to old (some participants were close to 60), the program covers anyone who wants to join. Volunteers come from all over to help out, and that includes St. Bonaventure University’s ski team. The racing team, which is required to complete 20 hours of community service, came to HoliMont on Saturday, Jan. 14 to help with the program. Alex Ross, a sophomore at Bona’s and a member of the racing team, said the experience was incredible. “I had a little boy the whole day, and it was awesome,” Ross said. “It made me feel so good knowing that I helped him have a good day on snow. Not to mention, I had trouble keeping up with him.” Another great thing about the Phoenix program (and subsequent day of activities at HoliMont) is that it brings in droves of volunteers. From helping out on-hill like Ross to serving hot chocolate and getting the children dressed for skiing, there are endless ways to commit time to helping others. Dash Hegeman, HoliMont Marketing Director, said the program in its entirety is something special. “The Phoenix Program is an incredible aspect of the HoliMont family,” he said. “Every season we have so many success stories come out of the program ... it’s always so uplifting to see the joy of both children and adults alike due to the great work that the instructors and volunteers do.” HoliMont’s Phoenix Program combines enthusiasm of snowsports with community service. It champions the idea that no one regardless of age or disability - should have to sit out of an awesome activity just because they don’t have the physical tools necessary to do so. By helping, volunteers are assisting the disabled rise and overcome any obstacle just like a Phoenix.

On Feb. 11, 2012 HoliMont will host the 11th annual Phoenix International Race, an event that is as much a celebration of resilience as it is about gold, silver, and bronze medals. The race will bring over 80 adaptive racers from New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Canada to HoliMont for a day of excitement, thrills, and probably more than a few tears of joy from parents.

On Thursday, March 1, the United Way of Cattaraugus County will host its 5th annual “Ski the Day for the United Way” at HoliMont. The United Way’s goal is to bring people, organizations and resources together to improve community well being. All proceeds from this charity event will benefit area programs serving local residents in need. “HoliMont is pleased to be able to partner with the United Way once again this year,” said HoliMont Marketing Director, Dash Hegeman. “The United Way focuses on helping the community, which is something that HoliMont has always seen as a huge priority. Our partnership with the United Way of Cattaraugus County allows us to make a difference in the community and we’re looking forward to another great event.” “United Way of Cattaraugus County provides support to organizations, notfor-profits, and human service providers

to ensure that the needs of our vulnerable populations are met,” states Candy Plants, CEO of United Way. “One out of every four residents in Cattaraugus County receives assistance through a United Way funded program.” The “Ski the Day for the United Way” fundraising event starts at 8:30am and runs until 5pm. Pre-registered participants will get an all-day lift ticket, continental breakfast, gourmet lunch by Dina’s, an event t-shirt, one hour après ski wine and beer party, and entry into the poker run where there are plenty of great prizes to win. There are a number of fun events planned for the day, and a bunch of prizes will be auctioned off throughout the day. Registration is only $50 ($20 for HoliMont members). People registering after 2/14/12 will not be guaranteed an event t-shirt. The cost of the event at the door is $60. HoliMont FLITE Team Continues to Soar

Former U.S. Ski Team Members Bring Experience and Leadership to HoliMont’s Up-and-Coming Freestyle Skiers

Like all those who are comfortable in their own skin, they carry their achievements with a quiet dignity. The Snowsports School at HoliMont is blessed to have the Hackers as coaches. All competitive sports form a giant pyramid. Countless participants at the bottom, fewer and fewer athletes as the mob elbows their way up the pyramid, and only the elite few at the top. In skiing, the pinnacle of the pyramid is usually associated with making the National Team – which we know as the U.S. Ski Team. In the HoliMont Snowsports School, there are two members of the staff who reached the pinnacle of the pyramid. Corey and Kelly Hacker are the directors of the Freestyle program. They met while competing, dated, fell in love, married, and now have a beautiful baby daughter named Kylee. They are Western New York natives who trudged out to Kissing Bridge most nights after school so that they could hone their skiing skills. Both had parents who supported their ambitions and selflessly drove them both ways until they could transport themselves. Both Corey and Kelly were drawn to freestyle skiing, where they competed in moguls and aerials. They are living proof that great talent only shines after it has been buffed by thousands of hours of practice (the noted author Malcolm Gladwell wrote in his book “Outliers – The Secret Story of Success” that it takes a minimum of ten thousand hours of practice to become a virtuoso at anything). Ironically, Corey and Kelly never knew each other while they were kids at KB. They met as they were both living in Lake Placid, NY while training at the Olympic Aerial Training Center. At this facility spectators can watch the aerialists ski down a gigantic, wet, astroturf ramp that abruptly ends with a sharply angled ski jump, which catapults the aerialists high into the air. While airborne, the aerialists perform a dazzling array of flips, rolls, and twists – sometimes all at once! These summer skiing aeronauts wear skis, boots, and life jackets – for they land in a large, in-ground swimming pool. There are ramps of varying heights, each more fearsome looking than the next, and the largest ramp is designed to allow competitors to practice triple flips – before they spectacularly splashdown in the water. The Hackers said that it takes a MINIMUM of three to five years of practice to learn how

to safely execute a triple flip on skis. By the time Corey and Kelly were regulars at the summer training center, they were on the U.S. Ski Team. Both had slogged their way through the “minor leagues” of ski competition. They had excelled in regional competitions, which earned them the right to compete in Nor-Am events. In this corner of the globe, Nor-Am events are one level below the pinnacle of ski competition, The World Cup. To make the U.S. Ski Team, one must earn one’s spurs on the Nor-Am circuit. Through relentless training, hard

work, and laser-like focus, Both Corey and Kelly emerged from the Nor-Am heap and made it onto the United States Freestyle Ski Team and the World Cup circuit. Many try, but only a handful of skiers who ever click into a pair of bindings can ever say that they had the privilege to represent their nation as a member of the National Ski Team. At the National Team level, skiing is a fulltime job that is not always accompanied by full-time pay. Both Corey and Kelly will be the first to tell you that you needed to treat your appointment to the U.S. Ski Team as a

business opportunity. Over the years both have made deals with ski manufactures and an array of sponsors to keep the wolf from the door. At one point, they began a window washing business in Lake Placid to help finance their expenses (especially during the financially lean summer months.) Once they became fixtures on the team, Corey and Kelly travelled around the world competing in aerials. At this elite level, your travel, lodging, and food expenses are picked up by the U.S. Ski Team. They travelled all over the United States and Canada (Kelly was especially fond of the beauty of the Canadian Rockies), and also to France, Austria, Switzerland, Australia, Finland, Italy, the Czech Republic and, believe it or not – China. In this whirlwind of travel, they had some spectacular moments. Both of them took 5th place in the aerial events for men and women at the 2001 World Championships. Corey also fondly remembers winning the overall Nor-Am Grand Prix aerial title in 1998, an accomplishment that vaulted him onto the U.S. Ski Team. Kelly was the Women’s U.S. National Champion in aerials in 2001 and 2004. She twice placed 4th in a World Cup aerial event and had twenty career toptwenty finishes. Any one of their numerous accomplishments would be enough to puff up many of us with pride – but not Corey or Kelly. They travelled the world representing our nation, but never forgot their roots. I sometimes ski down Snowbird (a trail at HoliMont) and stop to watch Corey as he is – with shovel in hand – fiddling with a jump. I always ski away and think, “He was on the U.S. Ski Team, but now is selflessly toiling for the upand-coming freestyle skiers.” You won’t find nicer, kinder, or more unassuming folks than the Hackers. Like all those who are comfortable in their own skin, they carry their achievements with a quiet dignity. They related their incredible achievements to me as I was prepping for this article as if they were dictating a shopping list – it is simply not in their nature to be boastful. The Snowsports School is blessed to have the Hackers as coaches. For, by their example, our youngsters can learn much about how to conduct themselves – on and off the slopes. With instructors and seasoned tele-skiers on-hand, people of all experience levels can enjoy it. The cost for TeleFest is $65 ($30 if you have a HoliMont pass), which includes an all-day lift ticket, an event t-shirt, participation in a tele-race and clinics. Also, there will be raffles, prizes and special rental prices.

By Spencer Timkey On the hills of HoliMont and Holiday Valley, one is certain to see diversity. You’ve got the traditional skiers, the run-and-gun snowboarders, the freestyle-inspired, and everything else in between. A really unique subset of the snow sports culture is the telemark ski and those who have the patience to master it. Unlike conventional skiing, telemark skis have a free-heel meaning the toe-piece is the only thing connected. HoliMont is a big proponent of telemark skiing, and on Friday, March 2 they will be hosting their annual “TeleFest.” Knowing there is a big telemark demographic around the Western New York area, HoliMont knew it would be beneficial for everyone. “TeleFest” allows people to demo telemark skis, boots and bindings with licensed, PSIA (Professional Ski Instructors of America) instructors to give them the down-low. “TeleFest is a really cool event,” said Dash Hegeman, HoliMont Marketing Director. “There are a lot of people around the area that love to telemark ski, and we wanted to give those people - whether experienced or beginner - an opportunity to explore the sport a little more.” Telemark skiing traces its roots all the way back to the 1860s, when Sondre Nordheim created a ski where his toe stayed in place but his heel lifted. He discovered he could conquer more challenging terrain because of the mobility the binding gave him on the hill. Since then, telemark skiing has grown exponentially. Companies like Volkl have

diversified their retail lines to provide those who love to telemark with more options. James Czora, who works at The City Garage in Ellicottville, said TeleFest is an awesome way to get people out on the equipment to get a first-hand feel. “The whole program is awesome,” Czora said. “The equipment that is used for demo is really nice quality, and if someone is new to the sport, chances are the experience will be good enough that he or she will want to continue to do it. “It’s a completely different discipline,” Czora continued. “For me, I’ve been on traditional skis my entire life. When I jumped on telemarks for the first time, it was a whole new experience - new turns and new movement throughout your lower body. But most importantly, it’s a different perspective.” TeleFest is a day where people can come out to the hill and try a different form of their beloved sport. With instructors and seasoned tele-skiers on-hand, people of all experience levels can enjoy it. Once a barber on Route 5 in Hamburg, Jack Quavis now enjoys the life of a ski bum with sponsors. He is the creator of EVLRocks.com, a website devoted to the Ellicottville lifestyle. Quavis started the website six years ago as a hobby; taking photos of everything and everyone Ellicottville and sharing them on his website. Now Quavis is touring New York State exhibiting every ski resort and area in it, the same way he has Ellicottville. There are 44 destinations along his journey, and his plan is to hit them all in 44 days. If you’ve been in Ellicottville, you may have seen Quavis - with his red hair and yellow lensed glasses, snapping pictures and being part of the crowd. Now he also uses video, and his trip can be followed on skimypov.com. Everyday Quavis shoots pictures and video while skiing and meeting people all over the state; at night he edits and shares them. His weapon: the POV350 camcorder (www.mypov360.com). It can be mounted onto a helmet or at the end of a small staff, which allows the user to hold it out in front of them, making for some sick videos down the slopes. Despite a very tight schedule, he managed to answer some questions for Snowed-In. What motivated you to start EVLRocks? To show people what they are missing in EVL. The idea came one night while drinking and talking about the great times here in Ellicottville. When did you depart for your trip and what was the first spot you visited? I lit out on Jan. 4 and headed northeast to Brantling Ski Slopes outside of Rochester, and then north to Dry Hill Ski Area in Watertown. You can watch my videos I posted on skimypov.com. They are all starting to mesh together for me; it’s a lot of work but fun, so check it out. Can you compare any of the places you’ve been to Ellicottville? Everywhere I go there is something to compare to Ellicottville and someone who knows Ellicottville. The other night I overheard some guys talking about a T-Bar. I asked them where they were talking about and the guy was wearing a Holiday Valley shirt. Can you describe a couple of the resorts you’ve been to so far and what sets them apart from each other? I like the resorts where the owner is a hands-on operator because they seem to have a real feel for what their customers want from them. Labrador, Plattekill, Greek Peak were cool; I was treated like family. Every resort has its own nitch but they all seem to cater to family skiing programs. Whiteface marketing director Bridget came out and skied with me and showed me the ropes there. A few places comped me lunch … bonus! The real hook-up came from Lake Pleasant Lodge in Speculator, NY. The owner grew up in EVL and comped my room (a suite with jaccuzi ... best room they had!) for three nights. I never met them before but they got wind of my trip and refused to let me pay. EVL people ROCK! What is your favorite nightlife spot in Ellicottville and favorite so far on the road? All of them in Ellicottville, and I found a place that is just like Madigan’s in Saranac Lake called Grizle T’s; even the owner reminded me of Big Kenny at the door. What do you like best about your trip? I started my own barber shop so I didn’t have a boss telling me what to do, and now I don’t have anyone telling me ‘how’ to do what I do. It’s my own gig and I love it. I love meeting all the people and not having to answer to anyone. FAST FIVE: What’s your set-up/sponsors? Volkel 155 twin tips, Marker bindings, APEX boots. A well-liked individual who can charm anyone into smiling for the camera. His media company is now incorporated and is called EVLotion Media, Inc. He is getting bigger and better and wants to bring Ellicottville to everyone and everyone to Ellicottville. Quavis will make his triumphant return to Ellicottville mid-February and will be welcomed back with open arms. EVLRocks has evolved and the ball is rolling. Jack Quavis will play a part in Ellicottville’s future and he is documenting it all.

hidden treasures. The Enchanted Mountains Geo Trail was launched in 2009 and now contains 32 caches all around Cattaraugus County. Receive a wooden nickel for each cache you discover. Find them all and get an Enchanted Mountain Geo Coin. In late 2011, The New York’s Amish Geo Trail was introduced with 12 caches placed along New York’s Amish Trail for cachers to discover. Learn the History, Discover the Lifestyle: Explore the Many Treasures in Cattaraugus County

Desiring to promote the western sections of Cattaraugus County, NY, the Department of Economic Development, Planning and Tourism hired Roger Brooks, CEO of Destination Development, to assess the area from Gowanda to Randolph and to make recommendations for marketing this “corridor.” What Brooks found there enthralled him as he was immersed in a completely different way of life. This area piqued his interest as few other areas have because of the pastoral setting and the simple ways and beliefs of the Amish people that live there. Brooks suggested that the area be marketed as New York’s Amish Trail in a way that would use the Amish businesses as the lure to get visitors to the County while promoting the non-Amish businesses in the area and thereby connecting Gowanda to Randolph. A few months later, Tonia McAllister, Executive Director of Randolph Area Community Development Corp., drew some tourism related businesses and

organizations together to begin the process of building “New York’s Amish Trail.” Today, NY’s Amish Trail members have produced a brochure with a map that pinpoints where the Amish and the non-Amish businesses are located, gave hundreds of tours of the Amish Countryside, started an Amish Barn Quilt tour, developed NY’s Amish Geo Trail and hosted events throughout the year; all the while working with and respecting the Amish businesses and the privacy they prefer.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Who are the Amish? The Amish adhere to a Christian faith and belief system that values community, unity, family, faith and hard work. The Amish in our area are Old Order, a very conservative and traditional community living without electricity, phones, cars and other modern conveniences. Most commonly recognized by their plain dress, horse and buggy transportation, and

old-fashioned farming practices, they live an intentional lifestyle that separates them from the modern world and is centered around their families and Amish community. They make a living from farming and handcrafting products for sale.

What do the Amish make and sell? They produce a variety of goods including quilts, rugs, baked goods, candy, furniture, toys, baskets, eggs, homegrown fruits and vegetables, jams, woodworking, leather, lumber, iron works and more. Where are the Amish shops? Follow the signs! The signs point the way to the Amish businesses and tell what items each business produces. The Amish sell their products from their homes - the Amish Trail map will help you locate their businesses. Then, look for a sign in their front yard and a sign that indicates if they are open. You will not find any large Amish stores or commercialized Amish shopping areas or

attractions. Rural, small town, personal and friendly is what characterizes this area instead. An authentic Amish experience! What else do I need to know? • Amish shops are closed on Sundays and certain holidays. Some shops may also close randomly for various reasons such as a wedding, funeral, or family obligation. • Amish do not accept credit cards. • Slow it down and drive with caution around Amish horse and buggies. • Do not take photos of the Amish or their children; it is against their beliefs. • Respect their privacy & personal property.
