Saturday, March 24th

photo/Bob Knab www.rkgraphics.smugmug.com There is always something fun happening in Ellicottville, and the month of March is loaded with fun. The raccoon mask suntans will be more abundant and the sun will be glowing higher in the sky. Though it will bring an end to the winter fun, fear not because next year will still come, and summer around here is enjoyable as well. But for the time being … relish in the snow.

HOLIDAY VALLEY KEEPS THE PARTY GOING!

Spring Conditions Bring Pond Skimming, Cardboard Box Race, Slush Cup and More Through the Month of March

By Chad Neal

March - whether it comes in like a lamb or lion – brings with it the spring equinox, which promises the end of the cold season and the coming of warmer days. Winter will soon be swept into memory, but it’s not over just yet. The snow is piled high thanks to the crews who brave the freezing temperatures to get the manmade crystals out there when Mother Nature is not as accommodating. The bittersweet end of the ski season is never a letdown at Holiday Valley. They know how to keep the party going until every last flake has melted. Spring skiing is on its way! The second weekend in March plays host to the Winter Carnival and Mardi Gras Parade, with all the usual fun antics and parties held on and off the slopes. (Read more on page 3.) On March 24 Holiday Valley will host the annual Pond Skimming lollapalooza along with the Cardboard Box Race. And new this year, a Retro Spring Party invites the public to Holiday Valley’s Yodeler area on Saturday, April 7; everyone is encouraged to wear their favorite old style ski or snowboard clothing, “whether it be knickers, one-piece neon suits or those stylish boot stretch pants.”

POND SKIMMING/BOX RACE

The infamous Pond Skimming event is a great crowd favorite. A large pond constructed at the base of Yodeler challenges participants (most of whom are donned in wacky costumes) to skim across the entire length of the icy cold pond on their skis or snowboard. Clear the pond, or get drenched. Prizes will be handed out in various categories including most creative outfit, best crash, best adult skimmer and best child skimmer. Growing in popularity, entrants into the Cardboard Box Race will vie for top honors in style, speed, funniest, and kid. Gather your team, construct your cardboard racer, and get ready to send it flying down the hill. “The whole day is a fundraiser for Team Holiday Valley’s donation to the Ride for Roswell, which benefits Roswell Park Cancer Institute,” said Jane Eshbaugh, Marketing Director at Holiday Valley. Registration for the Pond Skimming or Cardboard Box Race is $12; or enter both for $20. Registration will start at 10:30am, with the skimming to kick off at noon followed by the box race at 1:30pm.

This “Celebration of Spring” party will also feature a cookout and music. Commemorative t-shirts will be handed out to the first 60 entrants, and each entrant will also receive a goody bag filled with great swag, like 2-for-1 lift tickets in April, Mountain Coaster and Sky High special offers, and a free pool pass.”

OTHER MARCH EVENTS

Leading up to Pond Skimming day, Holiday Valley invites all to test their speed in the annual Northwind Super G on March 18 (helmets required; open to kids, parents and grandparents!) On March 25, the USSA sanctioned Slush Cup will spotlight some of the great junior racers from all over the Eastern U.S. and is a great event for spectators. “All these events will help bring out-oftowners to eat, shop, lodge and enjoy the village,” said Eshbaugh. “Of course, all of these events are weather permitting, but we do have lots of snow and we’re still making it!” If you need a visual of any of these events, plenty of photos from past years are posted on evlrocks.com, or hop onto www. holidayvalley.com for up-to-date info.

The Holiday Valley Rangers Program always marches their kids in the Mardi Gras Parade downtown, as does HoliMont’s ski programs. The Red Hat Ladies (really, you can’t miss them) participate every year as well. One year, there was even a motorized ... toilet. Yep. You read that correctly. (Above: the Costume Parade down Holiday Valley’s Mardi Gras slope is always a crowd favorite.)

Your Ellicottville Real Estate Connection!

By Spencer Timkey If you’re looking to close the winter out with one last hoorah, then circle the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, March 10-11 and head down to Ellicottville’s Mardi Gras celebration! From “collecting” beads throughout the village to plenty of on-hill activities, the weekend offers something for all members of the family.

HOLIDAY VALLEY’S WINTER CARNIVAL

The pony races at Holiday Valley are a perennial favorite. The ponies (constructed by Ellicottville’s Bob McCarthy) are attached to snow tubes from Holiday Valley’s tubing park. Lay your bet on a pony, and the winner of each heat goes on to the derby round. Fun prizes are awarded, and all of the money raised is donated to charity. Winter Carnival wouldn’t be complete without a Ski Queen. Anyone can enter; the Queen who receives the loudest crowd approval will win the title. Besides the honor of being Queen of Winter Carnival, some sweet prizes will be bestowed upon the Queen and her Court. The crowning of this year’s Ski Queen will take place Saturday, March 10 at the famous Snow Bar at the base of Yodeler. (Snow Bar construction is subject to weather conditions.) For the kiddies, Creekside Lodge hosts a number of activities throughout the weekend such as balloon races and a scavenger hunt. “Mardi Gras is a great family-oriented day,” said Kristin Sciara, Assistant Director of Marketing at Holiday Valley. “We get so many participants each year for all of the events, and it’s just fun for everybody. There will be hot dog cookouts and wine & cheese parties as well.” Other exciting Winter Carnival traditions returning to Holiday Valley include the Dummy Downhill, the Mercy Flight raffle, and the Sunday Costume Parade down Mardi Gras slope. Enter into these events and you’ll have the chance to win some awesome prizes, including a 2012’-13 season pass to Holiday Valley, a Grand Lady Cruise, Nook tablet, iPod Touch, lodging at Niagara Falls Hilton with dinner, Great Wolf Lodge waterpark passes, EBC gift certificates and more. For a full schedule of Winter Carnival events taking place at Holiday Valley, log onto their website at www.holidayvalley.com.

HOLIMONT GOES “GREEN”

This Mardi Gras, HoliMont will have a “Green” theme inspired by their new Dinosaur rail, which they plan on using as the centerpiece in the Mardi Gras Parade downtown. The “Green” theme will evolve as the week goes on and culminate on the 17th with a St. Patrick’s Day Apres Party. In anticipation of St. Patty’s Day, the HoliMont Lift Operators will be sporting green tuxedo t-shirts as they assist people in the lift lines. As always, HoliMont will be kicking off the Mardi Gras weekend with a torchlight parade on Friday night, March 9. The general public is more than welcome to come to the Chalet that night for Dina’s Friday Night Fish Fry and then stay to check out the torchlight parade.

DOWNTOWN PARADE

Saturday’s events culminate with the Mardi Gras Parade down Washington Street. The Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the parade, has seen it grow exponentially throughout the years. People can still have floats, but the majority of the participants walk. “We encourage walking groups,” said Heather Snyder of the Ellicottville Chamber. “You can have as many people as you want joining you. It is free to participate, but we do require participants to fill out an application - which is available on the Chamber’s website. “We used to charge an entry fee, but we don’t anymore because it’s all for entertainment and fun,” Snyder continued. “It gets people on the streets for one last bash before the winter is over.” The Mardi Gras parade starts at 6:30pm on Saturday. For more information about the parade or to download a registration form, log onto www.ellicottvilleny.com.

B4BC an Epic Event, Scoring Over $20,000 for the Cause The Boardroom, Holiday Valley and All B4BC Supporters Made it Happen Again this Year

photos/Bob Knab photo/Bob Knab www.rkgraphics.smugmug.com

The B4BC event at Holiday Valley offered special riding and park clinics for women, a park contest open to both men and women, local shop demos, a cancer awareness outreach booth, silent and Chinese auctions and an awards reception party, with proceeds benefitting the Buffalo area’s Women’s Oncology Program at Camp Good Days and B4BC awareness programs. (Check out more shots on the Photo Rewind, page 23.)

The 4th Annual Boarding 4 Breast Cancer event held Feb. 11 at Holiday Valley was, simply put, a success of epic proportion. In a year where weather has been less than cooperative and interest is marginal, we still managed to surpass our goal of $20,000. That being said, we could not have done it without the following: Mervin Mfg., the Program, Rome, Oakley 32 crew, Dakine, Betty Rides, Nike, Burton, Giro, Smith, Under Armour, K2, Grenade, 686, Neff and Skullcandy.

Ellicottville yet again proves itself to be one of the most amazing, unselfish communities on the planet, and with the help of the following, we have earned that reputation: John Barry, Cedella Sergel, Megan and Trevor Wilson, Megan Dickinson, Lindsay Gena, Bob Knab and Phatman crew, Joanne Timkey and Ellicottville Oasis, Mary Timkey, SKM Group, Seneca Allegany Casino & Hotel, The Gin Mill, Coleen Collins and Camp Good Days, Josh at Red Bull, and Shad Nowicki for the amazing art.

Without Amanda Greene (B4BC) and Susanne Steck (Spyder), this event wouldn’t have gained the momentum and continued success that it has. Holiday Valley, as usual, went completely above and beyond what we ever could have hoped for, and we would like to thank them for their willingness to always accommodate. Exceptional thanks to Pat Morgan, Kristen Sciara, Jane Eshbaugh, Joany Bund and Holiday Valley Realty, Ali, Carrie, Becky, and Dani from the Holiday Valley Daycare,

Nikki Clark, Steve Gotreau, John Harvard’s and Centerplate staffs, the Snowsports School, and everyone else who helped get it done. Also, an enormous thank you to our own Boardroom customers and supporters. And for everyone who came out and supported, helped, or participated in any way with this event, more thanks than words can say. Much love, Samantha Timkey and The Boardroom

42/78 Season Enders: Big Air and Spring Shredding are on the Hopeful List

Despite the tough winter, the 42/78 Parks crew is still hopeful to pull off the annual Quarterpipe contest at the base of Yodeler. Tentatively scheduled for Saturday, March 17, the event has a slew of sponsors lined up, including Flow Snowboards, Armada Skis, Eira Outerwear, Smith Optics, Skullcandy, and The City Garage … just to name a few. As for the Spring Session event on Foxfire (slated for April 14) … we’ll have to wait and see if the snow sticks. Check facebook.com/holidayvalley for the latest updates on these events.

Red Bull Butter Cup Brings Snow & Entertainment to the City of Buffalo

HV Park Crew Sets Course in Niagara Square

The Red Bull Butter Cup snowboard series hit the streets of Buffalo, NY the evening of Feb. 11 as part of Buffalo’s Winterfest Powder Keg Festival in the heart of Niagara Square. Crews hammered away at scaffolding and dropped 10 tons of fluffy, manmade snow onto the capital building’s front steps. Holiday Valley’s 42/78 Park Crew was on location to set the course. GETTIN’ BUTTERY: While DJ D-Starr dropped some hot beats, 110 amateur and pro riders braved the sub-zero wind chill as they faced-off under the streetlights in Niagara Square. Riders spread the style on thick as they laid down their best ‘buttery’ tricks on the custom-built features set up by Holiday Valley Ski Resort. “These kids really brought it; the level of skill in Buffalo was just awesome. Picking a winner from the crowd was tough for sure,” said Pat Morgan, one of the event judges and the night’s Emcee. SPREADIN’ THE LOVE: The night’s event was comprised of three divisions: women’s, amateur, and pro, with Erica Page (Buffalo) taking the win for the ladies and Hunter Berry with top honors in the amateur group. After an epic night of buttery battles it all came down to the pro finals. The finalists battled it out in a five minute jam-sesh format, but only one could claim the title of Buffalo’s first ever Red Bull Butter Cup Champion. Cobie Harloff (Rochester) came out on top by landing a sick butter to 450 out. Other podium finishers included, in the pro divison: Ricky Beuler (Colden), and Cody Voit (Colden) of the Holiday Valley 42/78 Park Crew. Am division: Lakota Lyford (Ellicottville) and Christian Canfield (Hamburg). Women’s divison: Carly Harrington (Buffalo) and Laura Sleinad (Buffalo).

photos/Bob Knab www.rkgraphics.smugmug.com

“Red Bull Butter Cup put on quite a show for the people of Buffalo,” said Drew Cerza, Festival Organizer. “It was quite an opportunity for Buffalo to have this great event in the epicenter of the city, where we could showcase a group of our local athletes doing what they love to do: snowboarding.” Props to everyone that came out, and to the event’s sponsors: Oakley, Forum, Neff, Nike, NXTZ, and Holiday Valley Resort.

The crop of talent at Holiday Valley and HoliMont is absolutely ridiculous. Ellicottville draws in visitors from all over, so we get to see the best of Buffalo, Cleveland and Toronto. Kids seem to get better and better each year ... however, it also seems like they get younger and younger. Snowed-In’s “Young Gun Spotlight” showcases some of Ellicottville’s best young riders. Where are you from? Do you come to Ellicottville often? I’m from Buffalo, and my family has a house in Ellicottville. We try and make it down every weekend.

How about your riding style? I ride regular with a cowboy stance. (For our readers, ‘cowboy’ refers to a wider stance with your feet turned way out.) I ride the Lib Tech Travis Rice pro model with Horsepower and Union Danny Kass bindings.

What kind of riding are you doing? Do you like to compete? I ride all over the mountain, but I really like riding in the terrain park. I have three USASA medals in two competitions - two gold medals in boardercross, and I was invited to compete in the Junior Olympics (which Evan couldn’t attend.)

6921 Route 242, Ellicottville, NY 14731

That’s awesome. How about your favorite trick? What kind of music do you listen to? How about your favorite run? Favorite trick is hands down the cork tailfish 360. I love listening to Lil Wayne and Skrillex when I ride. Favorite run at Holiday Valley is Sunrise.

Who are your idols? Obviously Travis Rice is a big one. The dude is so good at snowboarding ... it’s absurd. He pushes the sport so much, which in turn pushes everyone else to get on his level. But I doubt they ever will.

What do you like to do when you’re not snowboarding? I love playing baseball. I’ve played in a travel league for 6 years, and we go to South Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York. We did get to play at Cooperstown for a week, which was so awesome. (Cooperstown is home to the Baseball Hall of Fame.)

FAST FIVE: Favorite 90s movie: Forrest Gump. Favorite Food: Chicken Wings. High School: St. Joe’s. Favorite Summer Activity: Mountain biking. Spins: Frontside.

Come watch and show your support for these hardworking crews … they’ve worked their butts off this season. Race starts at 10am.

Our success as a ski community (areas and retailers included) all depend on one another. Never has a time where “Shop Local” been more important. The SIA Snow Show held in Denver, Colorado Jan. 26-30 enabled interaction between all walks of the industry. From front line shop staff, sales reps, CEO’s to sales managers, the show provided the opportunity to net face time, gain inspiration, and conduct business with partners from all over the industry.

By Pat Morgan

Winter in Ellicottville has been nothing short of amazing this year. Endless powder coupled with countless bluebird days, have made it one of the best ski seasons in recent memory. Snowfall and attendance records at Holiday Valley and HoliMont are in jeopardy of being blown out of the water, prompting many to wish these glory days would never end. Well, sort of. Alright, maybe I exaggerated just a little bit. In reality, things have been tough this season for ski resorts (all over North America), as well as for the specialty retailers who call Ellicottville, NY home. Despite heroic efforts by local ski areas, this winter has simply not been up to par. Regardless, bull-wheels must continue to turn, and local retailers must continue with their annual challenges of day-to-day operations not knowing when/if the crowds will come to browse their sales floors, filled with handpicked selections of hard & soft goods. The good news: next season is looming large, and the excitement is already building. Now that the doom and gloom is out of the way, let’s focus on that excitement. One of the best parts of being a local retailer stems from those aforementioned challenges: Who is my customer? Where are they coming from? How much are they willing to spend? What are some of the best products on the market I can offer them? A great place to work through these quandaries is the annual SIA Snow Show held in Denver, Colorado. Previously held in Las Vegas, the 2012 SIA Snow Show hit the Mile High City Jan. 26-30, 2012, enabling interaction between all walks of the industry. From front line shop staff, sales reps, CEO’s to sales managers, this show provides the opportunity to net face time, gain inspiration, and conduct business with partners from all over the industry. Despite a less than stellar season for snowfall around the U.S., over 20,000 attendees made it to the Snow Show to welcome the next generation of products. All of your favorite shops in Ellicottville hit this trade show, attending appointments with their current array of brands, all the while scouring the nearly 340,000 square feet of floor space for trends and products that will set them apart from the “other guy.” Couple that with a daily seminar schedule touching on everything from grassroots marketing to merchandising (not to mention an On-Snow hardgoods demo at nearby Winter Park), and your local retailers truly have their work cut out for them. So you may find yourself asking, “What’s the point?” Well, here it is: Whether it’s the local retailer or ski area, all have been faced with the daunting task of following up an exceptional snow year with a truly disappointing year. One thing is certain though - our success as a ski community (areas and retailers included) all depend on one another. Never has a time where “Shop Local” been more important. These local retailers depend on it, appreciate it, and all look to provide you with a degree of customer service, loyalty and character you’d be hard pressed to find anywhere else (ESPECIALLY online). It goes without saying this collective unit can finish this season strong, and move towards next season full of optimism and energy that greeted the 2011-‘12 season initially. The resiliency seen through this is built on collaboration, a degree of innovation, as well as the driving passion we all share for winter sports and culture.

Thanks for reading, and ultimately for your support of the snowsports industry and its retailers in Ellicottville, New York. Think Snow ...

Holiday Valley’s summertime operations have grown steadily over the past few years - everything from conferences to benefits to weddings. In an effort to keep those clients coming back (and coming back happy), a new main lodge was the ideal choice.

Holiday Valley can never sit still. Every off-season, Western New York’s go-to ski resort does everything in its power to keep bettering itself. From renovating the Yodeler Chalet to last summer’s addition of the Sky High Adventure Park, expansion projects are nothing new to this four-season destination. In 1962, the Clubhouse Chalet was built. Sitting in Holiday Valley’s marquee main area, it has been expanded six different times. However, with the addition of the Tamarack Club, management decided it was time for an upgrade. “Construction is tentatively set to start sometime around the end of March,” said Jane Eshbaugh, Director of Marketing at Holiday Valley. “We have just started the process of bringing stuff out of the existing lodge. It’s an exciting project.” If you’ve ever been into the Yodeler Chalet, you know how awesome it is. The new lodge’s look was inspired by that of Yodeler, so expect to see high, cathedral-like ceilings and many more windows. Just like in Yodeler, there will be a two-story stone chimney with fireplaces - adding that wintertime ambience. When the Clubhouse Chalet was built close to 40 years ago, no one could have anticipated how much bigger Holiday Valley would get. There are lots of stairs in the current Clubhouse Chalet and the dining areas aren’t fit for the number of people that The Valley sees every weekend. In an attempt to combat that, there will be less stairs and a redesigned McCarty’s Cafe to help with circulation. The Daycare Center will be moved to a new location inside, and the High Performance and Rental Shop will be expanded to accommodate the growing number of people. The outside decks, popular to so many on bluebird days, will also be expanded. The bar on the second floor will have a 180-degree panoramic view of the slopes, so those who prefer adult sodas over a shot at skiing can sit and watch their friends. “I’m really excited for the new main chalet to get done,” said Mark Andolina, a student at nearby St. Bonaventure University. “It’s really nice the way it is ... but if the new one is anything like Yodeler or Tannenbaum, then I can’t wait.” The 66,000 square foot lodge has a price tag of $12 million. But if you ask anyone who has skied at Holiday Valley before, they’ll be sure to tell you that money the resort spends is not money wasted. “I’ve ridden at The Valley for four years,” Andolina said. “It’s crazy how each year it gets consistently better.” There were rumors that during the construction of the new lodge, Holiday Valley was going to modify Holiday Valley Road. That, however, is a fallacy. “No new road this year,” Eshbaugh said. “We’re considering that as a future project. Parking will be very similar to how it is now.” Holiday Valley is known well throughout the region as being one of the best at reinvesting in itself. Each year, small improvements are made which cultivate into massive success. Regardless of if you frequent Holiday Valley or have never been there before, the immediate future brings a better lodge - which usually turns into a better time.

Double Black Diamond Golf Course Officials at Holiday Valley Set Opening Date: April 13

Although the slopes are still open (and plenty of spring skiing is on the way), many are focusing their thoughts on hitting the greens this coming golf season … and it won’t be long before the clubs make a comeback on the course at Holiday Valley. Officials have set the tentative opening date of the Double Black Diamond Golf Course (at least the front 9) for April 13. The Practice Facility with the Driving Range and practice greens are also set to open that day. Steven Carney, Holiday Valley’s Director of Golf announced earlier this month that Bill Burford has accepted the position of Superintendant of Holiday Valley’s Double Black Diamond Golf Course. Burford, originally from Erie, PA, is replacing Don Wagner who retired from a 27-year career as Holiday Valley’s golf course superintendant. Keep tabs on Holiday Valley’s course opening; find them on Facebook or log onto www.holidayvalley.com.

Nick Ventura: An Inspiring Young Man Injured Teen Learns to Walk, Talk ... and Snowboard Again

photos courtesy HoliMont Ski Area

Nick Ventura with his dad Feb. 17, 2012 on the slopes of HoliMont.

The 11 Foundation was created in honor of Nick by his family to help support other families with TBI and the medical expenses they incur during the recovery process. Check it out at www.11foundation.org In February of last year, the Ventura Family of Ohio faced their worst nightmare. 13-year-old Nick Ventura suffered a traumatic brain injury following an accident on the slopes of HoliMont. Determined to survive and get back on his feet, Nick endured months of grueling therapy in hopes of learning to one day walk again, talk again, and live life as every teenage boy should. His determination prevailed, and just a few weeks ago, the courageous young snowboarder strapped in and hit the slopes.

Submitted By Sherry Hartel HoliMont Ski Patrol

You may know who he is and what he’s been through, but if you don’t, it’s a story worth hearing. It’s one of sheer determination, hope, faith and the power of family and friends when the unthinkable happens. And because of all of those things, it’s also a story about recovery. On Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, I was privileged to witness an incredible event on Chipmunk, HoliMont’s bunny hill. Yes, that’s right, the bunny hill. You see, I wear one of those red jackets - the one with a white cross and a radio. Thankfully HoliMont Patrol radio activity is mostly routine coordination. But one year ago, the voices over the radio were different. I can’t remember the exact words, but I can still feel the urgency that was in them. That day, Nick, then a 13-year-old boy from near Cleveland, Ohio, was at HoliMont with family friends but wasn’t able to meet them at the bottom of Exhibition, a blue run, as planned. He was in the trees; unconscious and suffering from a traumatic brain injury. Was he skiing out of control? No. Was he a beginner? No. And yes, he WAS wearing a

helmet. It was just an accident; an accident of the worst kind. He doesn’t remember what happened, only that he was making turns and then he was in the hospital. I was not at the scene on the hill that day, but I was part of the rescue team in the patrol room. The patrol I am honored to be a part of was/is incredible and did everything possible to save his life. The outcome far exceeded anyone’s expectations. Nick Ventura walked into our patrol room on Friday, Feb. 17 and it brought tears to our eyes. As we talked with him, his father and his friends, Nick stood over the very place where he laid on the floor one year ago. We guessed at his age that day, as all he had on him was his phone. It was locked. We didn’t know his name or whom he was with. His friends were looking for him at the bottom of the hill, then at the top, and couldn’t imagine where he actually was. Eventually we got the phone number for his parents. But a horrific phone call had to be made ... “It’s his only son!” was what we heard next. The Venturas were in the grocery store near their home when they got the call. They dropped everything, got in their car and immediately drove north with only

the clothes on their back. There was no time to go home for they didn’t know what they would find when they got to Buffalo. Winds were too strong for Mercy Flight that day so he was rushed via ambulance to Women’s & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo where they performed emergency surgery on arrival. He had a fractured skull and four significant contusions in his brain. The next several days were difficult; survival and what level of a recovery would be possible was in question. Nick remained in Buffalo for a little over five weeks in the pediatric intensive-care unit, most of it in a druginduced coma. His parents stayed in housing nearby and started a web-journal so friends and family could get daily updates and send prayers. After somehow surviving those first few weeks, he was allowed to go home to begin rehabilitation at the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital. At that point he was still unable to walk or talk. After months of grueling therapy, Nick continues to work on his speech and has some problems with short-term memory, but has returned to school. Nick gets A’s and B’s and is Student Council President. He came back to HoliMont one year after that

near-fatal day to take another big step in his healing process. Not only can Nick walk and talk, he can put on his snowboard boots, board and ride! His dad tried to prepare him in case he couldn’t do it. To which Nick said, “I can do it.” And on Friday, Nick Ventura rode his board down Chipmunk and made some turns … some really, really sweet turns, and on Saturday it was even better. Nick rode down Sunset with several of the patrollers that saved his life and made some more really sweet turns. The 11 Foundation was created in honor of Nick by his family to help support other families with TBI and the medical expenses they incur during the recovery process. Check it out. www.11foundation.org As a patroller and the mom of a 13-year-old girl, I ask you to please wear a helmet and always make sure your kids, no matter the age, carry ID and contact information, and don’t forget it yourself if you are out on the slopes alone. Never give up on someone and never give up on yourself, because you never know what tomorrow will bring. It could bring some really sweet turns that you just can’t imagine today. Nick Ventura is living proof.

Join HoliMont in Celebrating the “Free-Heel Lifestyle”

On Friday, March 2 HoliMont will once again host its annual TeleFest. Telemark enthusiasts and aspiring telemarkers are invited to come spend the day at HoliMont celebrating all that the free-heel lifestyle has to offer. Tele-skiing originated in the Telemark region of Norway back in the 1860’s. A Norwegian named Sondre Nordheim used wooden skis, leather boots and special bindings that held his toes in place but allowed his heels to lift off of the ski to skillfully manipulate his way down some steep terrain. Long gone are the days of wooden skis and leather boots. Telemark technology has come a long way since the early days. Now you even see Tele-skiers in the park and pipe area of ski resorts. Unfortunately Tele-skiing is still the minority on the slopes of most ski areas. HoliMont’s TeleFest is our way of increasing the popularity of the sport. TeleFest will be a fun-filled day of clinics, tele demos and socializing with likeminded tele enthusiasts. The cost of the full event is $85 or $45 (if you already have a lift pass). Full event registration provides you with an all-day lift ticket, an event t-shirt, clinics and participation in the annual Tele Race. Lift ticket and t-shirt only is $55 and registration and t-shirt only is $20. There are also prizes to be won and special pricing on rental gear. For more information on rentals, call Gear Up at 716-699-5582. For an event registration form go to www.holimont.com/telefest.

Dekdebruns Ski Shop & Curley’s Snowboards Specializing in Customer Satisfaction; Local Shop Celebrates 50 Years in Ellicottville

photos/Chris Perks

Dekdebruns Ski Shop and Curley’s Snowboards have reason to celebrate ... fifty reasons to be exact. This season they commemorate 50 strong years in business, priding themselves on customer satisfaction. Their location at 20 Washington Street in downtown Ellicottville offers three floors of gear, clothing and rental equipment, and their professionally trained custom bootfitters rank them high in the industry. Clockwise from top left: New to the Dekdebruns entourage of board brands - and a hot seller this season - is Jones Snowboards; K2 and The Rolling Stones are also celebrating 50th anniversaries and have released a Limited Edition ski, available at Dekdebruns; Kylie, Patti and Greg Dekdebrun; a chair from the original Aspen lift #1 (in service from 1948-1971) hangs above the shop’s entrance; the Apex ski boot; ample selection of clothing for men, women and kids.

By Anjanette Nicolazzo

Specializing in customer satisfaction, Dekdebruns Ski Shop & Curley’s Snowboards has been serving the Ellicottville community for 50 years. Catering to skiers, snowboarders, snowshoers and cross-country participants, they’re internationally known for their bootfitting expertise and their ability to create a comfortable ski and snowboard experience for anyone. Three floors of gear and clothing offer ample selection. They also house a large pool of ski, snowboard, snowshoe AND equipment rentals. Plus, their service shop is fully equipped to maintain and restore your skis and snowboards; overnight tunes are available! The 2011-‘12 ski and snowboard season has brought several big sellers to the shelves and racks at the shop. According to Greg Dekdebrun, one of the most popular items is the Apex ski boot. “This boot is a hybrid ski boot made of a snowboard boot for warmth and comfort, which is surrounded by a carbon fiber chassis for

performance and stability,” he said. In addition to the Apex boot, Goode skis have also been a big seller; they were recently awarded the most improved product in the ski industry. Constructed of carbon fiber, it is currently the lightest ski on the market. Goode is famous for introducing the first pure carbon fiber “pencil” ski pole, the first composite rental pole, the first pure carbon fiber water ski, and the first pure carbon fiber snow ski. Not a skier? Jones snowboards are also flying off the shelves. Produced in Switzerland, Greg says they offer the latest in snowboarding technology. With several different boards to choose from, there is one for every style of riding. Other hot items at the shop include Nike snowboard boots and Canada Goose outerwear. “Our clothing selection provides a blend of unique fashion and function, whatever your particular style demands may be,” commented Kylie Dekdebrun. “We pride ourselves in providing a superior customer experience when you enter our store. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff will talk with you to

find out your needs and suggest products that meet those needs,” said Kylie. Both Greg and Kylie say their real specialization comes in bootfitting. “We can build custom foot beds to provide the strongest starting point in our alignment process, and we stock a large selection of boots to fit different foot shapes, based on the user’s abilities and budget,” said Greg. Their team heat molds and aligns your boots, and your stance and center of balance are analyzed on their TekScan machine. “This computer generated picture shows us how to adjust your equipment to ensure you have the proper body alignment before you hit the slopes,” Greg added. Dekdebruns is one of only eight shops in the U.S. certified to offer Footbalance custom foot beds. Established in 1947 in Buffalo, NY, the original store went by the name of Al Dekdebrun Sporting Goods. With the teamwork of Al Dekdebrun and Al “Pooch” Lavetti, an offspring of the store opened in Ellicottville in 1961, and the name modified to Al Dekdebrun Ski Shop. From its first location inside the

Ellicottville Inn building, the business has occupied many storefronts over the past 50 years. Greg has many memories of riding the bus down from his home in Buffalo as a young man to work in the Ellicottville store and ski on the weekends. He became enthralled with Ellicottville, and combined with his passion for skiing, he decided to make a career of this. In 1986, Greg and Patti Dekdebrun bought the business and renamed it Greg Dekdebruns Ski Shop. Greg and Patti were instrumental in growing the business and solidifying its reputation of providing superior service with a customer-centric approach. In 2006, their daughter, Kylie Dekdebrun, entered the business with the intentions of continuing the traditions started by her grandfather and parents. For more information about Dekdebruns Ski Shop and Curley’s Snowboards, stop by the shop at 20 Washington Street in Ellicottville, phone 716-699-2754. Find them on both Facebook and Twitter, or individually at www.dekdebruns.com and www.curleyssnowboards.com.

Renewal in Downtown Ellicottville

Changes are on the Horizon: Find Out Where Your Favorite Stores and Restaurants are Moving photos/Chris Perks

Monroe Street in Ellicottville will see many reformed storefronts this spring.

Visitors returning to Ellicottville this summer will notice drastic reform in the downtown business district. As these businesses continue to thrive, their drive to reinvest only proves that a town which was once centered around manufacturing has truly become a mecca for tourism, through all four seasons.

By Rachel E. Northrup

Pop music icons sing a lot about the topic of change, maybe because it’s complex, with many sides; emotions which you can never really control. One thing which we can count on for sure is that change occurs, and in the context of this article it’s happening for six downtown Ellicottville businesses.

KAZOO II

The players in this game of musical chairs are not new to Ellicottville. In fact, Kazoo II has been on Washington Street for twenty years. They are famous for windows celebrating the Mexican holiday, “Day of the Dead” each November. If you are unfamiliar with this holiday, it’s a time to gather and pray for friends and family who have passed away. You can find items at Kazoo II to create altars in honor of those loved ones. Owner Arleen Solly is an icon of Western chic, adorned with turquoise, always bringing inspiring objects and symbols of the sacred unseen world to her customers. You can count on Kazoo II’s eclectic blend of Milagros, books, statues and hand-crafted jewelry making their new home on the opposite side of Washington Street where the current Mud, Sweat ‘n Gears Ski & Snowboard Shop currently resides. “The thrill of the find” is what keeps lighting up Kazoo II and you can find it this summer by just looking across the street from their existing location.

windows to dress. What really keeps her up at night is what’s behind some of the false ceiling and walls? Most of the buildings in downtown Ellicottville have some unique architecture and Kim wants to bring it back to its roots, for example, by showcasing as much brick as possible. Honoring the distinct character of this building, MSG will feature an expanded Service Center for rentals and high performance demos. What you can expect as a customer is more room to move around, perfect lighting, neutral colors, more of the black trim from the outside with pops of color where you least expect it. Other enhancements include more off-street parking - eleven spots behind the Marketplace - and new lifestyle brands to compliment your slopeside experience here in Ellicottville and beyond. Owners Kim Reading and Miguel Azcarate have traveled extensively and hope to bring together all their favorite shop influences to the look and feel at the new location slated to open mid-August 2012.

NATURE’S REMEDY MARKET & WELLNESS CENTER

You may ask, “If MSG is moving to the Ellicottville Marketplace, where are you going to find your organic coconut water, supplements, and worldly hip boutique with Zen-inspired pieces?” After April 30 you can find Nature’s Remedy Market & Wellness Center and Gado Gado side-byside just down the street, at 26 Monroe. MUD, SWEAT ‘N GEARS Gretchen Mendell, owner of Nature’s With Kazoo moving to the Mud, Sweat Remedy, has purchased the building and ‘n Gears location, that begs the question: plans to renovate. The storefront will get an “Where can you find high end ski apparel, extreme makeover with full glass and wood high performance demos/rentals and custom similar to the windows at the Marketplace, stance alignment and bootfitting?” MSG is and Gado Gado will have their own door moving to the Ellicottville Marketplace on from the outside similar to the look of the corner of Washington and Monroe Streets.

Alexandra on Washington Street. Change feels frisky and it’s not just for the The changes on this building go beyond faint of heart. Kim Reading is ready to make the exterior. Gretchen will tell you she is a splash with her additional 1,200 square sold out about natural health and living. foot store, and maybe a little daunted by six Another change you can expect to see in

late spring/early summer is a two-story, 2,000 square foot addition off the rear of the building with a new deck entrance and a full working basement. The new addition will not only give both Nature’s Remedy and Gado Gado more retail space but it will house a unique group of holistic minded professionals including massage therapists, reflexologist, Certified Natural Health Professionals and Naturopaths. It continues to be their inspired purpose to empower individuals to become active participants in sustained wellness through the holistic approach. Ellicottville is such a natural place - pun intended - to have progressive products and alternative healing modalities. If you want a new perspective on your health issues, Nature’s Remedy can arm you with more information so you can make choices and work in partnership with your body and mind.

GADO GADO

Suzanne Roberts, owner of Gado Gado, is thrilled to move alongside Nature’s Remedy since she admits that often her customers are of a similar demographic. The experience inside this building will be so easy for customers: if you are thirsty for some fresh wheatgrass, you can get it and take in all the healing energy of both stores. The square footage size for Gado Gado will remain the same, but the flow and experience will be much more open and you will feel as though you have been transported to another world with Indian and Asian luxe. You will also find additional fitting rooms for a more comfortable shopping experience. You can still count on all your favorite fair trade items, unique women’s clothing and accessories for a wide age range. After visiting India in April of last year, Suzanne feels reinvigorated to keep bringing the international boutique flavor to Ellicottville. This is another building that has some innate charm and history that Suzanne and Gretchen look forward to having compliment their transformed stores.

RESTAURANTS ON THE MOVE

Moving further down Monroe Street, change is in the air for both Kabob Kafe and the Ellicottville Brewing Company. Kabob’s building, which is owned by EBC, will be physically transported into a new location with an alley from Washington Street to the lot that was previously owned by Fitzpatrick & Weller as log storage. Icky Iqbal, owner of Kabob Kafe, stated that the newly added full bar upstairs will continue to have the same menu and additional parking. This change will dictate them closing March 31 until their re-opening in mid-May. What’s so rad about this downtown expansion is that an area which was previously a parking lot will be cleaned up and beautified. The Wingate hotel will now have a much more attractive view as Nature’s Remedy intends to have just as much traffic from the new back deck of the building as the Monroe Street entrance. Once the Kabob Kafe building is moved, the Ellicottville Brewing Company expansion will be primed and ready to grow throughout the year. You will still be able to enjoy the Beer Garden this summer and maybe get more sun. At this point, it takes some strong visualization to see Kabob’s at the new location, the deck from Nature’s Remedy, the Brewing Company’s expansion … it promises to add a new dynamic to a space that was previously void of energy. Dan Minner, brewmaster at EBC, said seating will be expanded by 50-60 guests by 2013. He has the task of continuing to brew beer in the midst of all these changes, including ramping up production to supply more markets outside the brewery such as Buffalo, Rochester, Erie and Pittsburgh over the next year. New utilization of space in the downtown area and beautified sections are symbolic of a town that was once centered on manufacturing and is now a thriving tourist destination. All this change will no doubt create emotions, energy and complexities which will add to the ever-changing landscape of a tourist town with familiar faces in new places.

The robins may be back, but there’s still plenty of cold-weather fun ahead as winter glides into spring. Crush the spring ski slopes, learn about living the old-fashioned way, navigate swift waters, motorcycle along pretty country roads, win a high stakes game and relax at a peaceful spa. Welcome to Cattaraugus County - we’re so glad you’re here!

CONQUER SPRING SKIING, TUBING & SKY HIGH ADVENTURES

Make New York’s largest ski area your springtime destination. Holiday Valley Resort in Ellicottville offers the ultimate playground for skiers and boarders of all abilities. Kids will rave about the “secret” fort in the Tannenbaum woods. For a special thrill, take a Mountain Coaster ride or plan a day of aerial trekking in the trees at Holiday Valley’s Sky High Aerial Adventure Park. The Mountain Coaster is open year ‘round; the Aerial Park will open for the season on May 21. Check www.holidayvalley.com for hours of operation. Tubing fans will love 12 lanes of slippery bliss complete with 2 handle tows for effortless fun at Holiday Valley Tubing Co. Ellicottville is also home to HoliMont, the largest private ski area in the U.S., which welcomes non-members on weekdays. There’s plenty of snow on the slopes to get us through April, but snowmobilers are anxiously hoping Mother Nature will lay a thick coat on the ground before the season ends. When the snow sticks, put on your helmet and explore over 350 miles of state-funded, groomed snowmobile trails throughout the county, as well as the 74 scenic miles of winding trails at Allegany State Park. Enjoy unspoiled views as you glide along the park’s cross-country trails of the Art Roscoe Ski Touring area, or strap on snowshoes for a frosty adventure. Call 1-800-331-0543 to receive a FREE Snowmobile Trail Map.

IT’S A WHITEWATER RAFTING & ANGLING PARADISE

Famous for its thrilling springtime rapids and listed in the top 10 steelhead fishing sites by fishing magazines, Cattaraugus Creek is high on the must-do list of whitewater adventure seekers. Hire a guide or maneuver on your own through class II and III plus rapids while soaking in the breathtaking beauty of the Zoar Valley dotted with pristine waterfalls, majestic cliffs and old-growth forests. The abundance of naturally populated and well-stocked creeks, streams and lakes throughout Cattaraugus County annually attract fishing enthusiasts angling for trout when the season opens April 1. Join the salmon fishermen who line the banks of Cattaraugus Creek hoping to land the big one as salmon run upstream to spawn.

IMMERSE YOURSELF IN OUR ARTS, MUSIC & CULTURE SCENE

Ellicottville’s postcard charm, creative restaurants and lively music scene treats you to sophisticated flavor with a family-friendly hometown touch. Mark your calendars for Holiday Valley’s fun-filled events like the Winter Carnival and Mardi Gras weekend, Cabin Fever Fest and Pond Skimming Party. Play until dawn at the Seneca Allegany Casino, visit museums, go antiquing, take in a symphony concert or attend the Women’s Harley-Davidson Garage Party. Discover amazing paintings, sculpture, pottery, Native American artwork and more when you visit 45 regional artists’ studios on the free annual Routes to Art tour May 19-20. It’s nothing short of impressive!

SAVOR THE SWEETNESS OF MAPLE IN THE MOUNTAINS

As warm spring temperatures arrive, so does the eagerly awaited sugaring season. Maple trees all over the county are tapped to release the clear ambrosia that becomes Western New York’s nectar-sweet maple syrup. Visit state-of-the-art to old-fashioned maple production facilities on

two Maple Weekends: March 17-18 and March 24-25. Your whole family will enjoy touring local sugar shacks, learning how maple syrup is made and relish melt-in-your mouth pancakes smothered in locally made syrup. On April 28-29, Franklinville’s Western New York Maple Festival hums with hundreds of arts and crafts booths, all-you-can-eat pancake and sausage breakfasts, maple syrup products, food vendors and entertainment for all ages.

CATCH THE GEOCACHING FEVER

Do you enjoy the challenge of finding treasure hidden all over the countryside? Use your GPS or smartphone to locate 32 geocaches stashed along the Enchanted Mountain Geo Trail in towns throughout the county. Collect every town’s wooden nickel and get a commemorative EMGT GeoCoin. Bring your whole family to Allegany State Park and join hundreds of cachers to uncover over 60 stashes at GeoBash VIII May 19-20. Continue your treasure-hunting trek into Conewango Valley to find all 12 caches planted along the Amish Geo Trail. Collect 10 and receive a special New York Amish GeoCoin.

LOSE THE WORLD AS YOU FOLLOW NEW YORK’S AMISH TRAIL

Bask in the charming countryside on your springtime drive along New York’s Amish Trail. For a glimpse into a simpler way of life, stop at marked Amish homes and shops to purchase handmade products by talented craftsmen. TRAIL CENTRAL

You’re On the Trail to Something Big Spring to Life in the Allegheny National Forest Region

photos courtesy ANF Visitors Bureau

LEFT TO RIGHT: The Westline Inn, located south of Bradford off of Route 219, is the site of Leekfest on Sunday, April 29, which offers a fantastic leek buffet, a leek dip contest and musical entertainment. Bell’s Meat & Poultry in Kane has a wonderful array of spices, meats and cheeses. Miss Maggies on East Main Street in Bradford offers one-of-a-kind accessories for women such as jewelry, scarves and purses.

Typically, the month of March is a celebration of everything green. Here, in the lush greenness of the Allegheny National Forest Region - just 30 minutes south of Ellicottville - we celebrate green every day.

During springtime in the Allegheny National Forest, everything starts to come back to life - the trees start to awaken, songbirds come back to fill the air with music, plus wildflowers and leeks start to peep through the earth. Spring is a great time to be in the ANF Region when residents and visitors alike celebrate the leek - or ramp.

THE TASTES

The Leekfest at the Westline Inn, located off Route 219 south of Bradford, will be held on April 29. You will want to come early for this festival where you can enjoy a leek buffet - all of the dishes have leeks in them. There is also a leek dip contest to sink your teeth into as well as musical entertainment. Phone 814-778-5103, www.westlineinn.com. Mark your calendars now to come back to Bradford on May 5 for Stinkfest. This annual event, held on East Main Street between South Kendall and Fisher avenues, is an entire day devoted to celebrating the leek. Food and craft vendors line the street and sell a variety of merchandise and leek treats. There are also amusement rides for kids as well as a leek dip contest and outhouse races. Phone 814-362-4086, www.stinkfest.org. A trip to the ANF Region for any “foodie” would not be complete without a visit to Bell’s Meat & Poultry at 401 N. Fraley Street in Kane. This “Biggest Little Store Around,” will tantalize your taste buds with more than a dozen varieties of homemade sausage plus a wide variety of cheeses, beef logs and spices. You will not walk away empty handed. This is also a great place to pick up homemade leek dip or a beef leek log no matter what time of year it is. Phone 814-837-7321, Jackbellsmeats.com.

THE TRAILS

Spring is also a great time of year to get out into the Forest and enjoy the trails. Start your spring excursion with a walk on the North Country National Scenic Trial, the longest trail in the Allegheny National Forest. This is one of three designated National Scenic trails in Pennsylvania and provides vistas of the Allegheny Reservoir as it passes through rock outcroppings, open hardwoods and old growth forests and stands of hemlock. The northern section from Route 321 to the Red Bridge Recreational Area is about 29 miles and is perfect for backpacking. fs.usda.gov/allegheny While in the Forest, take part in one of the greenest activities that does require some technical assistance. Geocaching, a high-tech treasure hunt, requires a GPS system and a list of coordinates. Through these tools, visitors can journey to parts of the Forest which are not always seen by most visitors.

MORE GOOD EATS

After a day exploring the Forest, return to Bradford, the Emerald City. Bradford was built on the oil fortunes of years past. Different from the Emerald City of Oz, Bradford has the red brick roads and is surrounded by the scenic beauty of the Allegheny National Forest and Allegany State Park in New York. Stop by Kelly’s Restaurant, located at 27 Main Street, Bradford where the house dressing is Green Goddess, a cream-based dressing that spices up any salad. After enjoying your salad, feast on one of the many entrees at Kelly’s ranging from a good oldfashioned burger to Seafood Christina, a delightful marriage of a portabella mushroom and seafood. Phone 814-362-2933.

THE SHOPS

The Allegheny National Forest Region also has plenty of opportunities for you to spend a little green and take part of the forest home with you. The Sportsman’s Outlet is a great place to stop for all your outdoor needs before

your trek in the woods. Backpacks, kayaks, clothing and canoes are just a small part of the inventory at 500 Chestnut Street, where shoppers can get brand name outdoor merchandise at bargain prices. Phone 814-362-7700. Bradford has just the place for the cyclists out there - Just Riding Along, located at 48 Mechanic Street. This is a full-service cycle shop that is available to outfit your cycling needs, repair or tune your bicycle as well as leads group rides during the summer on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Call Pete at 814-363-9101, www.justridingalong.net. While you are in the Allegheny National Forest Region, take time to discover some Forest Treasures to take with you. If you yearn for some yarn, try the Yarn Barn & Gift Shop at the Kendall Creek Farms. This alpaca farm, open by appointment, is located just a few miles southeast of Bradford on Route 346 and the home of luxurious items such as sweaters, socks, scarves and mittens. This shop is open by appointment. Phone 814-3624561, www.kcfalpacas.com. For the ladies, your friends will be green with envy with your purchases from Miss Maggies. This unique shop has the latest one-of-a-kind women’s accessories straight from Los Angeles and New York. Dazzle everyone you see with the necklaces, rings, scarves and hats you can pick up here. Check out this unique shop, located in a converted two-story home at 241 East Main Street, phone 814-362-4277.

THE DEALS

Take some time while in the Allegheny National Forest Region and celebrate Pennsylvania State Tourism Day at the Inn on Maple Street in Port Allegany. On April 30, the Inn will be holding special offers for guests. If you travel 30 miles to the Inn then $30 will be deducted off your room rate; if it’s 50 miles then $50 will be deducted. If you travel more than 90 miles to the Inn on April 30, your room will be free for that night. Mileage and discount will be based on Google-Maps and MapQuest. This special is for April 30 only and is available for guests who have not previously stayed at the Inn. You must mention PAINNS (short for Pennsylvania Inns) when you call for this limited special. A credit card will be taken as your guarantee. If you do not show you will be charged the full price of the room as there are others on our waiting list to take advantage of this offer. Cancellations will be honored up to 72 hours before April 30 so others may be offered this special.

THE SIGHTS

To capture all the beauty of the region, plan to take part in the Allegheny National Forest Photo Trek Weekend Photography Shop. Held May 18-20, this workshop, headed by award-winning photographer Ed Bernik, will show you the art of seeing, how to choose a lens and teach exposure, composition and flash when shooting in color and black and white. Call the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford at 814-362-5078 or e-mail Laurie at lbd4@pitt.edu to register.

THE VISITORS BUREAU

You can also take some Forest Treasures home with you by shopping at the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau. Go to the online shop at www.visitANF.com to order an official Trail Central cap ($18.95) or a Zippo lighter ($29.95) depicting the brand new Kinzua Sky Walk at the Kinzua Bridge State Park. For those interested in the history of the Kinzua Viaduct, the documentary DVD, “Tracks Across the Sky” is available for $19.95. To order these Forest Treasures or to request a FREE Visitor Guide & Map, contact the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau at 800-473-9370 or go to their website at www.visitANF.com.
