By Spencer Timkey When the fall colors are in their twilight and we’re knocking on winter’s door, there’s one event at Holiday Valley to bridge the dreaded November gap - the Beer & Wine Festival, presented by Ellicottville Brewing Company, Southern Tier Brewing Company and Holiday Valley. Now in its 13th year, Beer & Wine has become a favorite event for an (ever growing) contingent of fermentation lovers. Going down on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 11-12, Beer & Wine brings both breweries, wineries and visitors from all over the area. Playing host to over 100 brews/vintages from 30 beer and wine makers, there will be something for fans of all forms of liquid courage. Saturday, Nov. 12 is the actual Beer & Wine Festival, but Holiday Valley invites you to come Friday night for the pre-Fest dinner. This year’s theme is “The Bootlegger’s Ball,” a 1920s/Prohibition celebration. Costumes are highly encouraged, so get to it, Flappers! The dinner will offer food and beer pairings; you can get a head start on everyone else before Saturday. Friday night is annually a blast, and you shouldn’t miss out. Appetizers begin at 6pm and the party is on! Holiday Valley will again utilize all three floors of the recently rebuilt Holiday Valley Lodge (The Main, as it will forever be known as to me). Different music on each level makes it feel like you’re walking into an entirely new bar every time you ascend/descend a set of stairs (or elevators). The basement - or ‘wine cellar’ - will have a more subdued vibe, with the Michael Buble-esque Michael Nugent serenading you. Wineries include Ellicottville’s own Winery of Ellicottville, Silver Creek’s Willow Creek Winery, Merritt Estate and many more. Head to the main floor for DJ Gilroy and the heartbeat of the party to pick up. Here, you’ll find your favorite beers. Personally, I prefer either a Southern Tier IPA or EBC (Ellicottville Brewing Company) Stainless Steel Obsession. But if you’re looking to broaden your beer flavor horizon, don’t sweat it - you’ll get to choose between breweries like Victory, Big Ditch, Voodoo, Brooklyn Brewery, Boston Beer, John Harvard’s … shall I continue? There will be a ton of options for every palette - from IPAs to Sessions to Ciders. On the third floor, “Buffalo’s Favorite Party Band” - Hit N’ Run - covers your favorite songs, and seeing as you’ll be drinking, go ahead and sing along. (You’ll sound great, I promise!) Last year’s Holiday Valley GoPro recap video had a vibrant crowd singing Styx’s “Come Sail Away” in unison with the band. It’s like karaoke with 100 of your closest friends.

Tickets are available at holidayvalley.com or at your nearest Wegman’s, so do not delay if you’re interested in coming. Beer & Wine always sells out well in advance, and if you talk to anyone that’s been, they’ll tell you it’s some of the best fun they have all year. People I’ve talked to love the event for a multitude of reasons. One said he loves the costumes at Friday evening’s dinner. Another said how much fun he has both with his friends (which is an annual trip for them) and the new people he meets every year. Another even met his wife at Beer & Wine Fest! If that’s not reason enough to check it out, I’m not sure what is. When the festivities end on Saturday night, you don’t want to be wondering how you’re going to get home. Holiday Valley is offering some really great lodging packages, and you can stay at The Inn (bottom of the hill down the sidewalk), Tamarack Club (adjacent to the HV Lodge) or at one of the many Holiday Valley rental properties. Don’t risk it! Get a group of friends together and stay the night. Options include 1 night for Friday or Saturday, or 2 nights with tickets to both the Dinner and Festival. And Holiday Valley lodging guests have a free shuttle after the Festival to Ellicottville and back. The 13th Annual Holiday Valley Beer & Wine Festival is brought to you by Holiday Valley, Ellicottville Brewing Company and Southern Tier Brewing Company. For more information or to purchase tickets, head to www.holidayvalley.com/brewfest or call 716-699-2345.

MSP FILMS PRESENTS: RUIN AND ROSE | Saturday, Nov. 19 @ 7pm | The Depot It’s that time of year … The City Garage has picked out their choice of new ski film releases, and they invite you to pop a squat at the Ellicottville Depot and view it with them. This year’s film: RUIN AND ROSE, presented by MSP Films and Under Armour. A surreal future leaves the world without water and consumed by sand - the Big Empty. A group of children survives alone on the edge of the endless desert in the ruin of the now. When a young boy unearths an ancient relic hinting at the lost wonders of winter, he sets off in search of the ghosts that once called the mountains their home. This bold cinematic experience balances stunning skiing with a wild and hopeful journey into the forgotten lands of myth and magic beyond the Big Empty. Acclaimed writer/director Ben Sturgulewski joins the award-winning team at Matchstick Productions and their two decades of filmmaking expertise to deliver “Ruin and Rose,” an epic creative vision brought to life by the talents of the world’s top skiers and filmed on location in Alaska, Austria, British Columbia, Bulgaria, California, France, Switzerland, and the deserts of Namibia. Check out the official trailer online - guaranteed to get you stoked for winter!

BOB McCARTHY’S IRISH CHRISTMAS | Friday, Dec. 2 @ 6pm | EBC All of Ellicottville was saddened with the passing of Bob McCarthy aka “The Voice of Ellicottville” this past June, and many people have stepped forward to make sure that the event he created, “Irish Christmas,” continues. Indeed it will! Renamed “Bob McCarthy’s Irish Christmas,” the Rotary Club of Ellicottville will insure that this fantastic event continues in Bob’s honor, as he touched so many in Ellicottville with his spirit and generosity. It was McCarthy who said, “I love doing Irish Christmas … it is a night of Irish magic. I don’t know how the magic gets there, but it just does ... that’s the beauty of it.” With 11 years under its belt, the Irish Christmas fundraiser has become an event to remember, and one that locals and weekenders alike don’t miss. Come Dec. 2, 2016, McCarthy’s wagon will be parked outside the brewery starting around 7am, where the public can leave new toys and unwrapped gifts for Santa’s Workshop and the Sheriff’s Santa Program. These programs collect gifts to help make Christmas a little special for less fortunate families. Again this year, a number of restaurants will serve a special Irish dish at a reasonable price. Final details for this year’s Irish Christmas are being worked out, but you can bet the event will continue the way Bob intended (including the fabulous pie auction), and we’re certain that some of Bob’s creations will be the highlight of the evening’s live auction. The spirit of the season is unmatched in Ellicottville, and Bob McCarthy’s Irish Christmas is a perfect opportunity to share it with friends. Remember to mark your calendar for Friday, Dec. 2 to share the spirit with friends and to help ` give back to families in the community. For more information call 716-474-7832.

GRAB YOUR GEAR AND HEAD FOR THE WATER ADVENTURE BOUND onthefly BOOKING FALL 2016 and SPRING 2017 GUIDED FLY FISHING TRIPS
World-class fishing guide, Damon Newpher, has joined the team at Adventure Bound onthefly … just in time for steelhead season!
As the air grows crisp and we say goodbye to summer’s sweltering temps, many cool weather fans are gearing up for a new season of adventure. If you are an avid fisherman (or woman), chances are you have thoughts of steelhead swarming your brain. Want to know where you can seek out world-class steelhead fishing in Western New York? Pack your gear bag and get ready to head out. The answer lies in Ellicottville, NY. Adventure Bound onthefly, located downtown on the main drag, has the guides, the gear and the knowledge to help you live out the fly fishing experience of your dreams. But it’s not just about the fishing. The staff at Adventure Bound knows how important it is to keep your non-fishing family members happy too! When it comes to activities for the entire family, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better fly fishing destination than Ellicottville. In addition to world-class steelhead fishing amid the stunning canyon capes and gorges of Zoar Valley, Ellicottville and its surrounding communities offer great lodging, restaurants, a wide variety of activities, shopping and some of the friendliest customer service and community vibe around. Amongst the pages of this publication, you’ll find plenty of options to satisfy every family member’s “shop-play-dine-stay” desires … Anglers and non-anglers can enjoy a wonderful experience in Ellicottville with an assortment of adventures for the family including Sky High Adventure Park at Holiday Valley Resort, bike rentals to take advantage of the amazing trail system in and around Ellicottville at EBR (Ellicottville Bike Rentals), Ellicottville Oasis Spa inside the Tamarack Club at Holiday Valley, kayak and SUP rentals at Adventure Bound, hiking and swimming at nearby Allegany State Park and the wide array of shopping venues that make mountain towns so charming.
LET’S GET BACK TO FISHING ...
For eight months of the year, Ellicottville is a geographic hub for some of the most diverse fly fishing opportunities in the country. In spring and fall anglers are impassioned by the chance to catch steelhead, pike, muskie, walleye and bass on the fly. Those who are up for a bigger challenge will fish for the 20 lb. freshwater bonefish (otherwise known as carp). But the most exciting species of them all … the steelhead. As you may already know, steelhead and rainbow trout are categorized as the same species, Oncorhynchus Mykiss. The major difference is that rainbow trout live exclusively in freshwater and steelhead are anadromous, or go to sea. Unlike most salmon, steelhead can survive spawning, and will spawn multiple times. Various steelhead strains throughout the past decades have been introduced to the tributaries of the Great Lakes. Adventure Bound onthefly anglers access these fish on the world famous tributaries of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Fly fishing publications refer to these Erie tributaries as “Steelhead Alley”. These naturally anadromous steelhead, known as “Lake Run Rainbows”, enter the tributaries by the tens, hundreds and thousands every fall, winter and spring to spawn. Timing of the runs is largely dependent upon weather conditions and lake temperature. During a typical season, air becomes cooler in late September, accompanied by several fall rain showers. When these conditions exist, you can expect the steelhead to be in the creeks October through May. Though some steelhead can be caught year around, the fall and spring months are the peak seasons to target these magnificently strong fighting fish.
GUIDED FISHING TOURS
Steelhead can test the best of tackle with strong, powerful runs downstream, and then back up, followed by a huge leap into the air. Every part of your rig will be tested as the
drag of your reel screams, your rod bends from tip to butt and your leader gets dragged across rocks. Lucky for you, Adventure Bound staffs a professional team of fishing guides that can help make your fall fishing season an enjoyable one. Their guides use nothing but the best tackle from Orvis, and you can surely find what you need in the shop’s fully stocked fly section - let them pair you up with the right flies, rods, reels and other tackle so that you’re sure to have a great day on the water. Better yet, let their guides take you on a guided fishing trip! Adventure Bound guides specialize in both single and two hand casting, rigging and presentations. They have decades of knowledge of this fishery and will put you in the best position to have the exhilarating experience of catching Steelhead on a fly. The cost for a guided trip is $325 for a 1/2 day or $450 for a full day.
ADVENTURE BOUND’S NEWEST GUIDE
World-class fishing guide, Damon Newpher, has joined the team at Adventure Bound onthefly … just in time for steelhead season! Damon will be managing the store’s fly fishing trips, instructional courses, youth initiatives and Orvis fly shop. He will also promote the SUP onthefly brand of inflatable standup paddleboards, which are designed with features that work well for fly fishing. Damon comes to Adventure Bound from the Glendorn Lodge in Bradford, PA, which was recently named the #1 Resort Hotel in the U.S. by Travel & Leisure Magazine. Glendorn also won the distinction of being Orvis Fly-Fishing Lodge of the Year, largely due to Damon’s efforts. Glendorn was the first Orvis-endorsed lodge in the northeast and midatlantic states to win this award. In addition to being a veteran Glendorn staff member, Damon attended the Wulff School of Fly Fishing and is nationally certified by the Federation of Fly Fishers (FFF). He is certified and licensed by Orvis as an endorsed guide and by the states of New York and Pennsylvania as a registered guide. He has also been certified through the National Skeet Shooting Association as a certified skeet shooting instructor. Previously, he worked in Arkansas at the Ozark Angler and mastered the Little Red, White, Norfolk and Spring Rivers, known countrywide for their excellent trout and smallmouth fishing. Damon says, “I am looking forward to developing Adventure Bound and Ellicottville into the fly fishing gateway for the tri-state area. Adventure Bound is a world-class shop, with world-class brands in a spectacular adventure-oriented small town. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to contribute to the momentum of the Adventure Bound and SUP onthefly projects. My wife and young daughter look forward to being a part of the village of Ellicottville as well.” Anglers know that the waters of western NY, northern PA and eastern OH are home to incredibly diverse species. From steelhead and bass to pike and muskee, this part of the world provides endless opportunities for anglers of any age. Combine that with unsurpassed dining experience from restaurants like Villaggio, Silver Fox Steakhouse, John Harvard’s Brew House, Dina’s, and EBC, as well as lodging at Holiday Valley Resort, Wingate Hotel, Ilex Inn B&B, and EllicottVillas, and you will discover that Ellicottville, New York is truly a fly fisherman’s paradise! Stop into Adventure Bound onthefly and see fishing guides Damon, John or Nick to get rigged and ready for success on the water. If you are interested in booking a guided trip for Fall 2016 or Spring 2017, you can call the store at 716-217-4047 or email the crew at info@adventureboundonthefly.com. Join us in Ellicottville to sooth your angler’s soul and have your non-angler friends and family enjoy a spectacular time all at the same time. Spots are filling quickly for the fall season. So book your trip today!

By Spencer Timkey Progression. Innovation. Development. Since Holiday Valley’s genesis, these are the nouns we use to describe the resort. Every off-season, it’s all hands on deck - from management, to Mountain Operations, to Food & Beverage - to make a concentrated effort to make an already stellar product even better. When you speak in terms of national recognition, resorts like Snowbird, Mammoth Mountain and Okemo are names you hear often. But you’d be shocked at how many people across the North American continent know, and love, Holiday Valley. Last year, Holiday Valley (and to be completely honest, the entire east coast) was put on a Code Red high alert. When November came along and it was still 80º, no one panicked. Winter would come, fast and furious, right? But winter didn’t come, and even if you count what we had as winter, it was bad. But props to everyone at Holiday Valley - management, Mountain Ops, instructors, parking attendants … everyone - for keeping calm and weathering the storm (or lack of). Honestly, I still had some really good days on-hill last year. Shoutout to the snowmakers and groomers for saving the day in early January. ANYWAY … this winter is going to rule and it’s going to snow a ton! Appealing to skiers and snowboarders of all ages and ability levels, Holiday Valley’s strategic geographic location draws visitors from metro areas like Buffalo, Toronto, Cleveland and Pittsburgh. If you’re on the western edge of Ohio, you can drive 20 hours to Colorado ... or 5 to Ellicottville. If you’re in metro Toronto, you can jet down the QEW and be here in less than 3 hours, all the while experiencing a ski town vibe that rivals those of our West Coast counterparts. From snowmaking, to lodging, to customer service, to apres, Holiday Valley and Ellicottville provide it all.
NEW FOR THIS SEASON If you’ve been to Holiday Valley, you’re aware of the road that takes you up the hill, past the Main, to Yodeler and beyond. A drastic change occurred last season, when the $4 million overhaul rerouted the road to open up a significant number of parking spaces closer to the lodge - not to mention, eliminating people from having to cross the road. Access to the resort improved, and now that the kinks have been worked out - the flow of traffic in and out has gotten much better. And to boot, there’s a new entry/exit with a pedestrian walkway when you drive into the main parking area. JD Northrup Construction, Salamanca’s Dr. Green Lawn and the Holiday Valley Landscaping crew outdid themselves, as it looks awesome. The addition of 38 more HKD Impluse Snowmaking guns is also in progress to the tune of $1.2 million. Already in place around a large portion of the resort, almost all of the manmade snow around Holiday Valley will come courtesy of HKD’s blistering snow assault. This year’s lucky recipients of these high tech guns are Cross Cut and Northwind. These guns are ready to upgrade with automation in the near future, where they use onhill weather centers to calculate temperature and humidity levels, allowing snowmaking crews to flip a gun on or off - with the simple tap of a computer. The resort now boasts over 600 snowguns, giving it some serious firepower if Mother Nature decides not to dump any Lake Effect snow on us. The Inn at Holiday Valley, located right at the base of the hill, received new furniture for
the decks, outdoor seating areas, a redecorating of the Presidential Suite and a resurfacing of the pool. Holiday Valley Realty, which used to reside at the entrance to the Wildflower condos, has been moved to the old Burger King building on the corner of Route 219 and Holiday Valley Road. The building is currently getting a facelift, but is open for business. Ever the creative types, Holiday Valley will utilize the drive-thru - so when you come to check in to your place, you won’t even have to leave your car. Night skiing is getting tweaked a bit as well. On Mondays and Tuesdays, the lifts will close at 9pm, while Wednesdays through Sundays will remain open until 10pm. And great news for you night owls - the night ticket will begin at 3:30pm this year, a half hour earlier than the traditional 4:00pm start time.
JOHN HARVARD’S BREW HOUSE Half the fun of hitting a ski resort is the apres! After a strong day on the slopes, a cold beverage is the perfect way to end it. John Harvard’s Brew House, home to over 20 beers on tap, has views of the slopes and a (very cool) concrete bar. Bartenders will ask you how your day on the slopes went, all the while keeping you satisfied with drinks and food. “The food and drinks are excellent, but nothing makes a good apres experience like an awesome bartender,” said Franco Brady, Holiday Valley’s Director of Food & Beverage (of CenterPlate). “The brick oven (for pizzas) is always hot, and the views of the slopes - especially when they’re lit up at night - complements the experience so well.” John Harvard’s square-shaped bar allows you to communicate with other visitors and swap stories. Or, if you’ve got the family, there’s tons of additional seating. Your favorite beers are all on tap, including seasonals from Ellicottville Brewing Company and Southern Tier Brewing.
MOUNTAIN COASTER / TUBING PARK Two very underrated activities at the resort are the Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster and the Tubing Park. The coaster, located at Tannenbaum, takes you up the hill in a two-person sled and then loops and twirls back down through the trees. Bonus? You control the speed with hand brakes. “The coaster is a huge hit,” says Jane Eshbaugh, Marketing Director at Holiday Valley. “Parents can ride with their kids (as long as the combined weight is under the limit) and it’s a great time, especially at night. If you’ve done the coaster and want to experience some more highspeed thrills, the Tubing Park is for you.” The Tubing Park, located just a short drive down Route 242 east of the village, has 22 lanes with quality snowmaking to match. When it’s super cold, put those goggles on - because you’re going to go fast, Ricky Bobby. There’s a special vibe around Holiday Valley and Ellicottville that’s validated by the evergrowing number of people who come to visit. Also, fair warning from a local kid - when you come, do NOT mention El Nino in any shape, size, or variation. (Thanks in advance.) Instead, let’s focus on the predicted La Nina … according to the Farmer’s Almanac, we’re in for a GREAT, snowy winter this year! I’ll cheers to that!

A Genuine Winter Experience; A Lifestyle for Many ADD A LITTLE HOLIMONT TO YOUR LIFE ... YOU’LL BE GLAD YOU DID !
@amandacummings67
@lcove1
This is going to be a great winter. Farmers, weathermen, Mother Nature and the magic 8 ball all agree that we’re going to see better snowfall this season. If you’re a Member at HoliMont (North America’s largest private ski club), you know that it is an experience that can be tough to put into words because it really is just that – an incredible winter experience. Any time throughout the season you can hit the slopes and set your skis on edge to engage your finely tuned, high performance skis or snowboard on pristinely groomed corduroy and carve down one of HoliMont’s 52 slopes. But as with most things in life, picturing it doesn’t do it justice. Until you can actually feel that crisp Western New York winter air on your face as you cruise down a slope, all you can really do is imagine what spending your winters at this family-friendly ski club is all about. Located just outside the village of Ellicottville, NY, HoliMont has a slightly different mantra than many ski areas you are familiar with. HoliMont, you see, is a private ski club with a membership base that is very passionate about their little slice of winter ecstasy. Think this is like your grandfather’s country club? Think again. People choose to become members at HoliMont due to its family-friendly atmosphere just as much as they do for its pristinely groomed terrain and snowmaking abilities. With a strong emphasis on a children-focused ski school and racing programs that teach young members proper skiing/snowboarding techniques - and most importantly, lots of fun - the HoliMont experience is one that can be enjoyed by the entire family. Experience HoliMont. Think of that phrase as a lifestyle suggestion or a word to the wise, if you will. Check out www.holimont.com and follow the club on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, where you will find a continuous stream of content and action-packed photos. But social media isn’t going to give you anywhere close to the true feeling of being at the club on a Saturday morning in January after Ellicottville has just got pounded with glorious lake effect snow and the HoliMont Mountain Crew has been working throughout the night to get the slopes in optimal condition. Those are the days you will find out exactly what the edges on your skis are made for or how floating through the glades on a snow-

board is as thrilling as any feature in the terrain park. It’s the little particulars that truly make HoliMont a special place. This club was founded on family values, hard work and a deep-rooted love of skiing. And while the club has definitely grown up over the years, the one thing that has never changed is that it offers a one-of-a-kind family atmosphere. HoliMont still has original members (the club was founded in 1962) who are active in the club. Those people can tell you stories about hiking the hills in the off-season in order to remove any large rocks that could possibly cause damage to skis. Or they can convey tales about how the main chalet once doubled as a garage for the first snow groomer purchased by the club. Perhaps you’ll hear about how the chairlifts used to have numbers (i.e. One, Two, and Three) for names instead of being called Exhibition Express, Cascade, or Greer. After all the stories are said and done, what you will really find out is that becoming a member at HoliMont is about more than involvement in a club; it basically becomes a home away from home and a vacation that you can enjoy all winter long.
OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
If membership isn’t for you, you need not worry. HoliMont still has plenty for you! Years ago the HoliMont membership decided to open HoliMont to the general public every Monday through Friday (except for the week between Christmas and New Year’s). This change allowed any snowsports enthusiast to experience this special private ski club during its off-peak times. It’s not uncommon for people to use their vacation days (or sick days if you feel that “cold” coming on the morning after a powder dump) to take advantage of HoliMont’s Weekday Experience Pass (10 non-transferrable lift tickets and 5 snowsports clinics for as little as $240). Since the weekday traffic is considerably less than the weekend traffic, at times it is almost as if you have the slopes to yourself. After your day of skiing and boarding, we recommend you take advantage of some of the new improvements made at The Mont during the off-season. If you have enough gas in the tank, check out the newly graded and widened cross-country trail. Snowshoeing and XC skiing are great ways to cap off the day or take a break from the slopes. Cozy up in the new lean-to with friends and family for an outdoor experience beyond compare. Turn the page to see what else HoliMont has been up to …

HoliMont crews have been busy during the off-season making improvements and repairs, as well as making preparations for the WestMont expansion. Our XC trail has been lengthened, widened and reseeded. There’s a new lean-to for excursions, and our lifts have been checked and repaired from top to bottom. Everything is pointing towards a great snow season this year! See you when the snow flies!
HYDRATE IN STYLE
Pint glasses are great but tend to break while jogging or riding your bike. These new CamelBak® Podium bottles feature high flow rate and a self-sealing cap. Show HoliMont pride at your next event or exercise class. Available in the Slopeside Mountain Shop or online at HoliMont.com.
GROOMING THE GRASSY SLOPES
Piston Bully’s don’t just groom snow. HoliMont machines are utilized all year round to keep the slopes in prime shape. This machine is specially equipped for hot summer months. A large coolant tank is attached to keep the engine running at optimal temperature and the cab is air conditioned to do the same for the operator.

FALL FESTIVAL EVENT OCT. 8, 2016
HoliMont is hosting its first Cyclocross event this fall! This is a race you don’t want to miss. A fun and challenging course has been mapped out at the bottom of the Sunset chairlift area. It will keep your ticker pounding with climbing zig-zags, hairpin turns and fast descents. Spectators will be able to see most of the action and the backdrop should be in full technicolor courtesy the changing leaves. For more information go to HoliMont.com. (Like you needed one more excuse to come to EVL this weekend?)
There was a lot of dirt moved at the Mont this summer. The X-Country loop, Rabbits Run and Sunset areas got re-graded and improved. The XC trail was made wider to accommodate our groomers and the lower areas of Sunset have been smoothed and seeded in preparation for the future children’s learning area.

LEAN-TO AT HOLIMONT
There’s a cool new structure on the XC loop at HoliMont. The Lean-To features a firepit that will be perfect for warming up during moonlight group hikes. Don’t worry if you don’t have all the gear you need. XC skis, snowshoes and headlamps can be rented from Gear-Up Rentals right at HoliMont.
PROTECTIVE GEAR
The Slopeside Mountain Shop at HoliMont is stoked to offer a limited supply of POC helmets and goggles this season. POC has led the change in helmet design and safety. You don’t have to be a racer to appreciate the style and colors of POC products.
SAFETY IS JOB #1 OH DEER
The Ellicottville buck has been a frequent visitor to HoliMont this summer. Nicknamed “Rover”, this deer is quite friendly and often stops by for a pet and horn rub. Please use caution if you encounter him as the cooler temps draw near. His natural instincts could make him a little feisty the closer we get to the rut.
HoliMont Lift Maintenance is seen here inspecting all of the working parts on the Sunset lift. Bushings, hardware and parts have been replaced to ensure safe operation this winter. The lift crew is dedicated to smooth operation all year long.
For over 50 years, families and snowsports enthusiasts from miles around have converged on HoliMont, North America’s largest private ski area devoted to family skiing adventures. Generations of members have been drawn in by the amazing skiing, only to fall in love with the warm community atmosphere that makes HoliMont the kind of place you never want to leave. During the week, HoliMont is happy to welcome the public and groups. Our eight lifts service over 50 slopes and trails. Head to www.holimont.com.

The great news about our loyal readers picking up this particular issue of SNOWED-IN, is that it truly is marking the change in seasons, and winter is indeed just around the corner. A safe assumption, is also that you’re well aware of the ski resort prowess Holiday Valley and HoliMont bring to the table. Both are pioneers in their respective categories (public/ private resorts), who continue to re-invest in their properties and the community of Ellicottville annually, and we’d hedge a bet that you’ll be visiting one if not both frequently this season. But, should you find yourself visiting town in the “off-season,” you don’t need to worry about finding something to do. The spring, summer, and fall months are very much an “on-season” here in the village and surrounding areas, and here’s proof …
SKY HIGH
One of the most popular attractions bringing people to town these days is Sky High Adventure Park at Holiday Valley, now in its sixth season of operation (where does the time go!) Speaking from experience, this park is AWESOME. Available for purchase on-site, your Sky High pass nets access to 13 different courses that will challenge you both mentally and physically. Not to worry however - the adventure park is well staffed with plenty of enthusiastic attendants who can talk you through any tricky situation, or if you get in a real jam, even assist you back to the ground. Of the 13 courses, you’ll find a well-balanced array of ability levels, similar to your favorite ski resort. From the novice lower level courses to the intimidating sounding “Commando” course, there is truly something for everyone. One of the newer parts of the park, the 3-D Climbing Forest, adds even more aerial activity for the climbing enthusiast. The climbing forest consists of bouldering holds affixed to trees up to 60’ in height and varying difficulty, which can provide a challenge to even the most skilled climber. Unwind a bit after you tackle the courses with a ride down the fun-for-all-ages mountain coaster, and you’ve covered all your bases. There are plenty of ways to bundle these attractions together to save $ - find individual and bundle prices for the aerial park, the 3-D climbing forest and the mountain coaster on the holidayvalley.com website. You can even reserve your sessions online. We absolutely guarantee you will leave Sky High exhausted and smiling. Given the popularity of the park, it is highly suggested you call them at 716699-444 to make a reservation.
FORE!
Sticking with the Holiday Valley theme for a moment, the Double Black Diamond golf course can be found at the main base area of Holiday Valley Resort. This par 70, approximately 6,000-yard course will challenge even the most polished handicapper. With spectacular views from many of the tee boxes, even if you’re having a heck of a time hitting that little white ball straight (guilty) you will still enjoy yourself. There’s also a driving range and practice green at the base of the resort, just across the street. Holiday Valley offers great golf packages if you’re looking to stay overnight, and a tee time is always recommended – just call 716-699-2345 or stop into the generously stocked and award winning Holiday Valley Golf Shop, where you certainly will be able to make yourself look like a pro, even if your swing isn’t up to “par.”
@eschweers
@nickpaul29
CHOOSE YOUR TRAIL
One of the other great secrets of the region is the incredible mountain biking trail system found between Holiday Valley and HoliMont, as well as the surrounding hilly, forested terrain. Challenging single track mixed with a variety of other terrain are just one of the reasons the IMBA has gone as far as to label the trails in the area “EPIC.” With over 35 miles of trails locally, you’re sure to find something that is up your alley, and you will certainly see why people come from far, far away to hit the trails here. Recently, WNYMBA and Holiday Valley partnered to create a flow trail at the resort, which provides a fun and relatively easy way to get around the mountain on two wheels. Forgot your bike? Holiday Valley features bike rentals, as does the newly created Ellicottville Bike Rentals, located inside The Boardroom Snowboard Shop. If you’re looking for more info on the trail system, some gear for your ride, or some delicious grub to refuel after your ride, make sure you pop into Bike & Bean in downtown EVL for all the goods. You can also give them a shout at 716-699-2453.
COOL DOWN
All finished? Take a dip in Spruce Lake between the two resorts, or go for a refreshing dip and cocktail at the lively Holiday Valley pool complex and Cabana Bar (nothing beats poolside service.) Additionally, paddle boarding and kayaking has taken Ellicottville by storm, with Adventure Bound onthefly offering lessons and demos at their 5-acre demo pond on Route 219. Give them a shout to see what all the buzz is about with this highly entertaining sport, at 716-217-4047.
FESTIVALS IN THE VILLAGE
It’s very rare that something isn’t going on during each of your Ellicottville visits. Along with the notorious array of evolving shops, bars and restaurants, Ellicottville plays host to a slew of festivals and celebrations throughout the “winter waiting period.” Among the largest is the Summer Music Festival held each Independence Day weekend, which brings in major recording artists from the likes of Pat Benatar, Rusted Root and more, to entertain the masses on a slopeside amphitheater at Holiday Valley. Another personal favorite of mine is the annual Taste of Ellicottville, which gives local restaurants the chance to show off samplings of their staple entrees, or venture into uncharted territory with some new, off-the-wall creation. (A must-attend event in my book.) There is also Rock n’ Roll Weekend which features killer tunes and an impressive village-wide car show, and of course everyone’s favorite event, Fall Festival, which literally completely transforms Ellicottville into a mass celebration of the approaching winter season. Beer tents, vendors, music, and of course the brilliant fall foliage we look forward to annually can be expected, so put on those party pants and stamp it on your calendar; click on over to www.ellicottvilleny.com for a complete schedule of the year’s events. With so much to do, what are you waiting for? Get down to Ellicottville and take advantage of all the things we have to offer, no matter what the season is. After all, no one likes seasonal friends when there are four seasons of fun to be had … right here in this wonderful village!

NIGHTMARE HAYRIDES

It’s that time of year again … the days are becoming shorter, the crisp night air is back, and the holidays are fast upon us. While for some, this means a natural tendency to slow down, stay indoors and be fretful of the upcoming snow. However, for the residents of Cattaraugus County, it means heading out into the cool nights for chilly fun Halloween events, shopping in a relaxed setting, and gearing up to hit the slopes! The end of October brings chances for you to discover just what does go bump in the night with Nightmare Hayrides on Sommerville Street. Make your way through the Gothic Chamber, Haunted Wooden Maze, Haunted Barn and Vortex Tunnel, followed by a haunted Hayride. Ghosts and goblins are never far and all wait to bring terror to you and your friends during weekends in October. Or find out if the Hollywood Theater in Gowanda is haunted by attending “Horror at the Hollywood”. The weekend before Halloween, the old theater opens its doors to let visitors explore what’s hiding in the shadows. Ever want to explore a real Haunted House? The story behind the Haunted Hinsdale House is filled with chills including an exorcism, unexplainable events and strange sightings. You can take a tour or even spend the night by signing up for a public ghost hunt at www.pitsociety.com. Always in season this time of year is Pumpkinville! Open through Halloween, this is a tradition for autumn loving families as they pick out their pumpkin and enjoy all the fun activities. This year, Pumpkinville was selected as one of the few pumpkin farms in the nation to help celebrate “It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown” 50th Anniversary. Special Snoopy visits, a Snoopy maze, and Snoopy bingo are all highlights of this honor. Also new this year is a trackless train called “The Pumpkinville Express”! And don’t forget the hayrides, corn cannon shoot, Storyland, cow train, and all the delicious goodies from the bakery! Or try any of the Fall Foliage destinations in the Enchanted Mountains. It just makes sense that an area surrounded by hills and valleys of trees, that also embraces the outdoors, would have some of the best places to go in the fall time, be it anytime throughout the autumn season. Rock City Park and Griffis Sculpture Park remain open until the end of October - have a fall ball walking through the leaves while you gaze up at gigantic rocks or a steel sculpture of a giraffe. Allegany State Park (open year round) will have you seeing double vision as you view the trees and then their reflections off of Quaker Lake, Red House Lake, and Science Lake. Discover all the “Must See Fall Foliage Destinations” at EnchantedMountains.com/autumn-fall-foliage. Once Halloween is over, the real terror begins for some - thinking about shopping for the upcoming holiday season. Explore the Amish Trail for unique gifts! Adventure from Amish home to Amish home, finding quality hand crafted items including furniture, quilts, jams, jellies, candies, iron works, toys and more. Relaxation is found along the back roads as well as a sense of distance from the rush of everyday life. Plan your route ahead of time or simply go where the late autumn wind takes you. Call 1-800-331-0543 for the map and brochure or questions you have. There are guided step-on tours available through several locals who can lead you to different shops of your interest and give you amazing facts and information along the way! The contact information is available in the brochure or online at AmishTrail.com. (Read more about the Amish Trail, page A-20.) You don’t know the joy of winter until you are out experiencing it with an outdoor activity like skiing, snowboarding or snowmobiling! Perhaps one of the most exhilarating activities of winter, snowmobiling can be enjoyed on almost 400 miles of trails throughout Cattaraugus County! Discover warmth from the small towns of Randolph, Delevan, Gowanda, and Cattaraugus, who all welcome snowmobilers. You are never too far away from gas, food, or just a break to warm up a little! Bring your own sled down, or rent one for the day or a week! Call 1-800-331-0543 for this year’s map of the trails, including those in Allegany State Park and information on rentals, snowmobile friendly service and other information! Make your base camp at Allegany State Park in any of their group camps, heated rustic cabins or full scale cottages. Start on the 90 miles offered in the Park alone, then venture out creating loops that will present open fields of snow or tree lined routes. Allegany State Park also boasts the largest trail system for cross country skiing in Western NY (see page A-22). No matter what time of year you make a trip to Allegany State Park, it will always leave you wanting to come back for more! Hike, snowshoe or cross country ski on trails outside of the park, such as the Pat McGee Trail - a 12 mile multi-use trail that connects Salamanca and Cattaraugus. Or venture on the Allegheny River Valley Trail which travels around Allegany and Olean. Visit Pfeiffer Nature Center in Portville where you can take a nature walk on over 9 miles of trails, learn to snowshoe, make recyclable bird feeders and learn about the environment in our area. For your indoor pleasure, visit our museums, galleries and stage productions. Theater performances are available through Olean Community Theater or Olean Theater Workshop, or follow the Ray Evans Seneca Theatre - newly done-over - for their upcoming movies, plays and musicals. You can visit the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts, a world class museum located on the campus of St. Bonaventure University. The museum is free, open to the public and in addition to its vast and changing exhibits, hosts performances throughout the year. So why hide from winter and the holidays when you can discover new interests, new ways to explore the great outdoors and new places to shop in Cattaraugus County? For a complete list of adventures, events, accommodations, restaurants and more, visit the Enchanted Mountains of Cattaraugus County on the web or call for a FREE Activities Guide or brochures on a variety of interests!

NEW YORK’S AMISH TRAIL
Autumn is one of the best times of year for visitors to spend a beautiful afternoon exploring New York’s Amish Trail, which begins in Randolph and continues through Cattaraugus County. Visitors can enjoy the foliage and explore Amish shops, bake stands and produce stands along the way; whether you’re looking for a gorgeous handmade quilt, sturdy furniture, or a homemade pie, you’re sure to find it along the Amish Trail. Randolph’s Welcome Center at 72 Main Street has free Amish Trail maps available for you to start your self-guided tour; Saturdays are the best day to plan your trip, as all Amish businesses are closed on Sundays. For an in-depth experience of one of the largest Old Order Amish communities in the country, book a guided tour with one of Randolph’s experienced Amish Trail guides by calling 716-358-9701 ext. 208. Your guide will ride along with you in your vehicle and tailor the tour to suit the interests of you and your passengers, whether your interest is in a particular kind of goods or enjoying the scenic aspects of the Amish Trail. Because Amish homes and businesses are spread out across several miles of winding roads (some unpaved), it’s easy for first-time visitors to miss some of the best locations along the trail when driving on their own. For just $40, a three-hour guided Amish tour is an unforgettable experience of one of the most beautiful areas in Cattaraugus County and a simpler way of life that is almost forgotten in today’s busy world.
FISH TO SEE ... FISH TO EAT!
No visit to Randolph is complete without a trip to the Randolph DEC Fish Hatchery, located just 2 miles east of the village at 10943 Hatchery Road. The Randolph Hatchery is one of just twelve hatcheries in New York State; these hatcheries stock fish in over 1,200 public waters across the state. The Randolph Hatchery mainly raises brook, brown, and rainbow trout, and stocks public waters in Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, and Wyoming counties. The Randolph Hatchery, which is one of the oldest hatcheries in New York, is most known for stocking brook trout, commonly known as “brookies,” which are native to New York State and are the official state fish. Visitors are welcome to explore the hatchery year ‘round as it is open daily from 9am-3:30pm. For more information, visitors can call the hatchery at (716)358-4755. There are many great places to enjoy a good meal in Randolph after a full day of sightseeing! For family-friendly dining, including a delicious weekend fish fry, visit R&M Restaurant at 265 Main Street, which is open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Looking for a quick bite? Pete’s Place on Main Street has the best burgers in town (and is a favorite spot of former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly!) A popular spot for snowmobilers is MJ’s Tavern, which is located just a couple miles from downtown Randolph at 10933 Mace Road. Whether you’re stepping inside to warm up or to take in a football game on the big screen, MJ’s Tavern is the perfect place to enjoy a good meal with friends!

By Dash Hegeman Normally, I don’t inject myself into storylines, but with this particular article I feel compelled to make an exception. My father, Nelson Hegeman, was an avid skier in his youth. He instructed downhill skiing at Glenwood Acres and Kissing Bridge and later, after relocating to Cattaraugus County, spent many hours each winter cross country skiing at Allegany State Park where he was able to bask in the solitude and serenity of the park in all its snow-covered glory. I was two and a half years old when I was first introduced to skiing; my first memory of being on skis involves cross country skis and an unfortunate lack of coordination. With time and practice came improved balance and muscle usage, and eventually, I was able to follow my father around some of the easier routes on the Art Roscoe Ski Touring Area. To this day, I have vivid memories of my father coming home from cross country ski races at the State Park and how enthusiastic he was, even if he didn’t medal, as a result of being out in nature and one with the elements. He was a definite advocate of the Art Roscoe Ski Touring Area and did his best to pass that love on down to me. In hindsight, I wish that he had been more successful in that endeavor. Arthur J. Roscoe first came to Allegany State Park in 1925 after graduating from Syracuse University. In 1930 he got a permanent job as a Park Forester. In 1956 he was promoted to Assistant Regional Director. He held that position until he retired in 1968. During his time at the Park, Mr. Roscoe was instrumental in the development of skiing activities at the State Park and as a result, in 1979, he was honored by the Park when it dedicated the cross country ski trail system in his honor. Today the Art Roscoe Ski Touring Area is made up of six trails with various difficulty levels and approximately 30 miles worth of winter-time cross country euphoria. All the trails are accessible from the parking lot of the Mountain Shop and the Red House Administration Building. Cross Country skis are available to rent at the Red House Gift Shop. For more information about rentals call 716-354-9282. Naturally, the best way to acquaint yourself with the park is to go there in person and experience all the natural beauty that it has to offer. It doesn’t matter if it is spring, summer, fall or winter, Allegany State Park has year-round majesty that is unparalleled in Cattaraugus County. That said, if you haven’t had the opportunity to go there yourself yet, then take notes from some of the Park’s finest. Thomas Livak is a Park Manager 3 and has worked at the park for 8 years in a variety of roles. In his current position, one of his many responsibilities is to work with the park managers of both the Red House and Quaker areas to coordinate facility operations. He is also ingrained in the improvement and evolution of the multifaceted trail network at the park. These various trails, he points out, can be used for cross country skiing, mountain biking, hiking, equestrian, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, as well as walking and biking (paved paths). Livak is an avid skier and actually grew up learning to downhill and cross country ski at Allegany State Park. “I always enjoy getting out on the trails after a fresh snow,” stated Livak. “Christian Hollow and Patterson trails are probably my favorite trails for skiing and biking.” John Snyder holds the role of Park Manager 1 for the State Park Red House Area where he has worked for the past 9 years (6 of those years as manager). Snyder is also the Director of Cross Country Ski Operations for the Art Roscoe Ski Area, which means that he oversees the maintenance of the trails year round and helps take care of any grooming needs of the trails. All winter long Snyder inspects the trails and surveys staff and guests about trail conditions. He then generates ski reports as a way of keeping the public informed and up-to-date on the trails. When necessary, Tuesdays and Fridays are trail grooming days at the park. “I consider myself a rookie and I really enjoy skiing on Sweetwater,” said Snyder. “During the off-season, I enjoy exploring the entire trail system while hiking with my family or biking with friends.” Adel Wellman has worked at the park as a seasonal employee for the past 16 years. She started as a 10-week summer naturalist and is now the lead naturalist at the park. Wellman has a passion for all things snowsports related. “My favorite part is how quiet it is in the woods,” Wellman said. “I like the feeling of gliding, the smooth rhythm the body gets into when skiing. It’s a great workout, very refreshing, makes you feel alive. I like looking for animal tracks and sparkles of different kinds of snow. It’s a different forest in the winter, lots of interesting textures and muted colors. My favorite trail is Sweetwater skied from the second entrance. It flows nicely, good downhills and gradual uphills.”

Every winter, on average, the Park will see between 4,200 and 6,300 skiers all ranging in both age and ability level, but all sharing a love for the great outdoors. This program begins on 1/3/16 and runs until the end of February. Meet at the Summit warming hut at 4:30pm.

A COASTERS CHRISTMAS High-energy holiday do-op coming to Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino
HULICK: When did Carl and you get married? GARDNER: It was 1987. We spent 24 hours a day together, every day … on the road … wherever. HULICK: How did you meet? GARDNER: I am originally from Jamaica. I came here in 1962. The only groups I knew in that era were the Drifters and the Platters. When I met him he told me he was a member of the Coasters and I said, “What’s that?” He said, well that’s what you asked me … what I do. I am the founding member and lead singer of the Coasters. HULICK: (laughs) Did you know who he was then? GARDNER: No. He said to me … you have never heard of the Coasters? I said no I haven’t, what is one of their songs? He said “Yakety Yak” and I shouted … Oh my God! That’s you! I remembered dancing to that song in Jamaica when it came out! HULICK: WOW! What a great story! GARDNER: (laughs) I thought he was just trying to impress me.
Carl & Veta Gardner
............................... WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16 | 2:00 P.M. By Melanie Hulick There is a well known saying … the things legends are made of. This holds true for so many things in life, but in music it describes the Coasters. Now in their sixth decade of making music and touring, I don’t think anyone could argue that. Sadly, all the original members are deceased, but under the guidance of Veta Gardner, the wife of the original founding member and lead singer, the current members are still going strong, playing shows every weekend this year across the country.

With 8 Gold Records to their name, the original group hit the music scene with their first song in 1956. Known for their “funny” lyric songs in such hits as “Charlie Brown”, “Love Potion #9” & “Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart”, the Coasters became known as “The Clown Princes of Rock ‘N’ Roll.” Having being the very first group inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, they have earned their spot in music history.

A Conversation with Veta Gardner
This time around, my article is very unique. I spoke with Veta, the wife of the late Carl Gardner. She couldn’t have been nicer … and to listen to her talk about not only the group, but about her husband was certainly a different take on what I normally do, but it was also many other things. It was informative … it was a new perspective … it was important in the way of preserving music history from six decades ago. Mostly, it was heartwarming and joyful to hear a wife remember and talk about her late husband and the life they shared. Veta shared a couple of funny stories that unfortunately are not printable but allowed her wonderful laughter to come through. We did talk about the current group of very talented guys that make up the Coasters today, one which was actually hired by her husband when he had to leave the group, and we talked Christmas, since this is a Christmas show. Mrs. Gardner and the current Coasters are carrying on the musical legend that started 60 years ago.
...............................
Tickets to A Coasters Christmas are $35 and can be purchased through www.senecacasinos.com (click on Seneca Allegany). For more information on The Coasters visit www.theoriginalcoasters.com.
HULICK: Where did you meet? GARDNER: We both lived in condos in the same building in Mount Vernon. He lived on the second floor and I was on the sixth floor. I had divorced about three years prior, and I was introduced to him to learn how to drive. (laughs) We just became good friends and it escalated to lovers and then to wife. We were very, very good friends together … I was doing his bookings and I was still working as a secretary in midtown Manhattan at the time. HULICK: Is that how you started managing the group? I know you still manage the group of all new performers. GARDNER: Yes. He asked me when I met him after I moved here from Jamaica. It was a new adventure for me when he asked me to manage him … I never saw him do much work, so that’s why I didn’t know he really did anything like that because he was always in the building walking back and forth. (laughs) HULICK: Carl has since passed away. GARDNER: Yes. He had a stroke before Alzheimers set in. His speech was very hard to understand, so I used to have to be there by him to help him out … and he was losing his hearing. HULICK: How long did he perform? GARDNER: He played right up to 2005. He passed away in June of 2011, and I miss him very much. HULICK: Who has been with the current Coasters the longest? GARDNER: His name is Joe Lance Williams. My husband brought him into the group to replace one of the guys that left 15 years ago. He came into the group in 2001. The other members are Primo Candelaria (2008), Eddie Whitfield (2009), Dennis Anderson (2011). Currently though, Eddie is not with the group because he got sick and Robert Fowler has taken his place. You will love these guys you will be seeing at the Christmas show. Everywhere they go the reviews are great. It will be a fun show. HULICK: Usually when I interview someone who is coming to do a Christmas show, I ask them a couple Christmas questions. Would you mind? GARDNER: Not at all. Carl loved Christmas … he just loved it. HULICK: What would you say was your husband’s favorite Christmas song? GARDNER: You know he always liked Elvis Presley, so most likely it would be one of his songs. As far as singing one he would sing Silent Night in church every year, so that was his favorite to sing. HULICK: Was there a favorite holiday food you two had to have at Christmas? GARDNER: The one thing I used to make is leg of lamb. He just loved that! He always made me cook it for Christmas. HULICK: What about a family tradition? GARDNER: Well, when he was alive it was always at our house. We have a large family with my three sons from a previous marriage, grandchildren, my brother and sister … so we would all get together and I liked to go to Christmas service. Carl loved it so much; that was his joy to have all the grandchildren there. He also loved shopping at BJ’s! HULICK: (laughs) Really? GARDNER: (laughs) Everybody in BJ’s knows my husband. (laughs) I went in there one time without him and they are asking me, “Where’s Carl?” He was so loved by people.

By Air, Land or River TRAIL CENTRAL
THE ALLEGHENY NATIONAL FOREST REGION OFFERS OUTDOOR ADVENTURES IN SPRING, SUMMER AND FALL TOO! A BIRDSEYE VIEW FROM THE AIR: Views from the sky offer amazing landscapes as you soar above the forestlands of the Kinzua Gorge and the upper Alleghenies in an open-cockpit 1943 Boeing Stearman with experienced pilot Bruce Klein. This biplane ride is a safe and enjoyable - as well as memorable - experience. Take advantage of this bird’s eye view to see the picturesque beauty of the fields, forest, rivers and streams from above. One manmade architectural attraction best seen by air is the amazing Kinzua Sky Walk at the Kinzua Bridge State Park. Vintage Bi-Plane Rides leave from the Bradford Regional Airport, 212 Airport Drive in Lewis Run, PA. Traditionally the best fall foliage viewing is the last two weeks of September and the first two weeks of October. Individual rates, group rates and gift certificates are available. Call ahead to book your flight at 814-642-9486 or 814-558-5376. Feeling adventurous? FreeFall Oz Skydiving, 296 Faulkner Road in Shinglehouse, PA, offers tandem jumps for first time jumpers. For those who want to bring a group, specialized rates are available along with overnight accommodations at Oz’s Homestay, a charming B&B located beside the fields where the skydiving takes place. For additional information on Oz’s Homestay, call 716-378-2211 or visit freefallozskydiving.com. WALK THE TRACKS ACROSS THE SKY: The Kinzua Sky Walk is “One of the top 10 most scenic skywalks in the world.” This historic masterpiece of engineering and ingenuity is built on six of the original towers of the Kinzua Viaduct, which was once the highest and longest viaduct in the world. First constructed in 1882 and used for commerce and tourist excursions, the viaduct was partially destroyed by a tornado in 2003. In the fall of 2011, the viaduct was reinvented as the Kinzua Sky Walk, which allows visitors to stroll out 624 feet for 360 degree views of the wildly beautiful landscape of the Kinzua Gorge. Admission to the park and to the skywalk is free. The new Kinzua Bridge Visitors Center, at the Kinzua Bridge State Park, is open seven days a week. Learn about the engineering and can-do spirit of General Kane and Octave Chanute as they took on the task of building a bridge across the gorge. Enjoy films of the original excursion train which once carried passengers across the gorge seated in a reproduction railroad passenger car. Open year round. Driving address is: 296 Viaduct Road, Mt. Jewett, PA. HIT THE TRAILS: Visitors can also enjoy the Kinzua Bridge State Park from yet another vantage point - by land. The General Thomas L. Kane Trail is a one-mile loop, easy hiking trail within the state park. Expect to see a diverse sampling of tree species, wildlife and a wide variety of birds. The new Kinzua Creek Trail is a challenging trail for experienced hikers which crossbacks down the side of the gorge to Kinzua Creek. From this vantage point, hikers get a very unique perspective of the steel structure of the skywalk and they can also view eleven of the historic viaduct’s fallen towers. Picnic tables located throughout the park are shaded by a tree canopy with some offering views of the Kinzua Sky Walk. The Kinzua Bridge Scenic Byway is a designated shared use hike/bike corridor connecting Pennsylvania Route 6 to the state park, so be sure to bring your bike! The Marilla Trail System is a great interconnected trail system of five separate trails of different difficulty levels. A local favorite is the Marilla Bridges Trail, which loops around the Marilla Reservoir. This one-mile loop offers forest and water vistas. Highlights include a covered wooden bridge, three rustic wooden trestle bridges, and a delightful gazebo located at the southwestern corner of the trail. The trailhead is located along Route 346, five miles west of the City of Bradford. Fishing and kayaking are allowed.
VIEWS FROM THE RIVER: For those who love the water, the mighty Allegheny Reservoir is ripe with opportunity to see the Forest from yet another location - by boat, kayak, or canoe. Canoe and kayaks are available for rent at Willow Bay Recreational Area in the Allegheny National Forest. For pricing and reservations contact Allegheny Site Management at 814-368-4158.
For floating along the river - the Allegheny River Trail begins near the headwaters of the Allegheny River near Port Allegany in Pennsylvania, with water access sites also in Portville and Olean, New York. Froggy Bottom Allegheny River Outfitters can outfit kayaking excursions which are family-friendly. For information please call 814-558-0842 or click over to froggybottomoutfitters.com.

Ellicottville Lifestyle By Mary Heyl Since opening Ameri-Can on September 1, 2015, owner Liz Boberg has made a strong commitment to American craftsmanship, art, and industry in the Ellicottville area, as her inventory is made by local artisans and crafters. The scope of Boberg’s inventory expands even further to include items such as clothing made in the United States and Canada. Now, Boberg is pleased to share the exciting news that her store features a selection of merchandise from the well-known franchise, the Made in America Store, whose flagship store is located in Elma, just twenty miles south of Buffalo. According to Boberg, “There is a strong resurgence in companies that are carrying American-made products, and I was really impressed by the story behind the Made in America Store.” Mark Andol, owner and founder of the Made in America Store, has received national attention for his unique business, which was born out of sheer desperation during the Great Recession. In 1989, Andol opened General Welding & Fabricating, a manufacturing business that grew from a 5,000 square-foot shop with 10 employees in East Aurora to a 48,000 square-foot location with 60 employees in Elma by 2007. When overseas competition caused him to lose several customers, including two multi-million dollar accounts, Andol was forced to lay off half his workforce, many of whom were friends and employees he’d known for many years.

Confronted with the reality of the importance of keeping manufacturing jobs in the U.S., Andol fought back by opening the Made in America Store in a vacant auto dealership showroom in 2010. Every item in his store is 100% made in the United States, right down to the packaging and store displays. Andol’s store is the only brick and mortar store to sell all American-made merchandise, which includes clothing, gift items, and even everyday basics like paper towels and dog food. Boberg emphasizes that all of Andol’s goods are backed by a 100% guarantee that every component is American-made. Not only has Andol’s store supported manufacturing jobs in companies all over the U.S., but it has also created many jobs in his flagship store, as well as seven other locations across the state.
SALES DIRECT 716-699-2000
Boberg is thrilled to be one of the first Made in America “store in a store” locations in Cattaraugus County, which is another way Andol’s store supports American businesses. Boberg explained, “Because Andol buys in bulk from manufacturing companies, little stores like us can buy from him at wholesale prices. I can order small amounts of what I’d like to carry, without committing to a huge bulk order. The Made in America Store helps put small businesses like mine on the map by linking to us on their website, www.MadeInAmericaStore.com, their Facebook page and other media outlets to let people know where they can buy Made in America Store products in their own community.” This winter, Andol visited Ellicottville on a skiing trip and approached Boberg about carrying items from his store. After more conversations throughout the spring, Boberg made plans to have a selection of Made in America Store merchandise in time for the fall/winter season. In September, when Boberg celebrated Ameri-Can’s first anniversary, she officially introduced her selection of Made in America Store products. Customers can choose from a variety of home décor items, flags, glassware, decorative metal signs, puzzles, greeting cards and more, knowing that they are supporting American jobs all over the country. Boberg even carries fabrications from Andol’s welding company, including a packable, portable woodburning fire pit/grill - a must-have for outdoor entertaining. “So far, the response has been wonderful,” said Boberg. “I’m very excited to be a part of the Made in America story.” Visitors and holiday shoppers can check out the Made in America Store selection at Ameri-Can, located at 11 Washington Street, downtown Ellicottville, Monday through Thursday 10am-5pm, Friday and Saturday 10am-6pm, and Sunday from 10am-4pm. For more information, contact Boberg at Ameri-Can at 716-699-6690. Follow Ameri-Can on Facebook to view revolving product and local artwork.

We have a huge selection of helmets from Giro, Smith, Bern and POC, and goggles from Smith, Giro, Oakley, POC and Electric. This year’s favorite helmets include the Giro Range MIPS, the Smith Vantage and POC Receptor Backcountry. These helmets look slick and feel great, all while offering state-of-the-art protection and smart features. For seamless goggle compatibility we suggest the Oakley Flight Deck XM, the Smith I/0 or the Giro Contact. All feature color boosting lense technology, anti fog treatments and interchangeable lense options. Upgrading your old pair of goggles for a new pair will make everything you see look just as good as it did when you upgraded your TV from standard to high definition. Demos, seasonal equipment leasing, America’s Best Bootfitters … details please … It can be challenging to choose the right equipment that suits your level and style preference. We demo almost all of the high-end skis on our wall and usually in more than one size. With a greater variety to choose from, the better the chance our customers will find the proper ski. We also offer daily ski and snowboard rentals. Last season we added the “performance rental” to our fleet which gives customers the opportunity to upgrade to an all mountain ski designed for hardpack, groomers and bumps. Our season-long leasing program is very popular. It’s an affordable way to outfit kids who are new to skiing and snowboarding and for kids who are growing like weeds. We offer both new and used ski and snowboard equipment starting at $99. The first step in finding a proper fitting boot is finding the right bootfitter. Mud, Sweat n’ Gears has become a destination for people who want specialized bootfitting. As a member store of America’s Best Bootfitters, our job at Mud Sweat n’ Gears is to find you the perfect match. Our guys are very good at what they do and take the time to make sure the boots they fit you with are suited to your needs and abilities. You’ve got some pretty intense machines running in the back of the shop. No doubt you’re one of the top “go-to” places for tuning. What exactly do you have going on back there? The MSG “Speed Factory” is home to the most innovative tuning machinery from Montana of Switzerland. Weather you need a basic wax, base repair or a specialized race tune, we can help. We added a new tool called the “Wax Future”. This machine uses an infrared heat source to heat the base of the ski. This provides better and deeper wax penetration into the base of the ski, for longer and better gliding on the snow. If you find yourself frustrated by catching edges, have no bite on hard snow, see damage on your base or you neglected your equipment over the summer, it’s time for a proper tune-up at the Speed Factory. We can always count on MSG to bring in a fresh selection of lifestyle wear each year. What do you have hanging on the racks this fall / winter? We carry a fun and trendy selection of lifestyle wear - pieces you’ll reach for on and off the slopes. Lots of sweaters, cashmere wraps, casual jackets, shirts and tops, dresses, skirts, tights, hats, scarves, sporty bags, footwear, etc. Several brands are showing classic throwback style with shaggy sherpa fleece. We especially love Burton’s Bolden full-zip fleece for women and the Burton Bower full-zip fleece for guys. Toad & Co also put a fresh spin on Ajax Sherpa Fleece pullover inspired in the late-90’s. We’re crazy for anything using Burton’s Neu Nordic print for ladies - everything from totes, backpacks, hoodies, to Gortex outerwear. Cute as pie! Once again, we’re excited to have an even bigger selection of Alp n’ Rock this season, including the signature Ellicottville branded crew neck.
Interview with: TREY CLAUSS Mr. Man
What’s new this year at The City Garage? Coming into our 16th winter season at the store, we are still on the hunt for product that you can’t find in any other store. This always seems to be the hardest in the softgoods department. This year we are bringing in three new outwear lines in addition to our already diverse clothing line-up. TOBE, Strafe, and Planks outerwear brands all bring different aspects of the winter sport we love to the table. Word has it your bootfitter has seen a lot of feet … Our bootfitter Tim Cummiskey has the knack for fitting a good ski boot; he’s been doing it for about 30 years! He has what we call the “boot room” upstairs, kinda like the Dr.’s office. There, he will put you in the “big chair” and figure out why your feet hurt. Anywhere from custom footbeds, stance alignment, stretching, and anything else you can do to a ski boot, he’s your guy! Care to indulge in some of the other fine services you offer? We are a full service ski shop. Our number one service is Customer Service. Without customers we wouldn’t have anything to offer. Whether it be ski/board tuning, bootfitting, advice on product, telemark rental gear, where the best bar is … we offer it all! You’re hosting a movie premier event for MSP Films: “Ruin and Rose” this November in Ellicottville. Can you hype it up for us? Oh man where do I start!? Each year MSP Films outdoes themselves with delivering insane ski cinematography. This year will be like none other. They have produced a ski film that takes you from the deserts of Egypt to the coast of Africa and then sends you off the mountain peaks of Alaska. Nov. 19, 2016 at The Ellicottville Depot, 7pm. Free show, first come first serve. What other events is the team looking forward to hosting / participating in this year? Our biggest annual event comes a little later in the season. Telestock, a day of peace, love, and telemark skiing will be on Friday, Feb. 24, 2017. This is by far the most fun, relaxed, free spirit day of skiing you will have at Holiday Valley. We also hope to bring back our ever so popular Moonlight Snowshoe walk at Griffis Sculpture Park in Ashord, NY. We had to take a year off last season due to lack of weather cooperation, but hopefully Mother Nature will be a bit more kind to us! Tune into our FB page for more upcoming events throughout the season! You guys have the tendency to cook up some good grub in the back on those busy shop days/evening work hours. What’s the staff’s in-house grub of choice to prepare? Crockpot Creations! It has to be cooked in the pot. Goulash, franks n beans, spicy chili … the master chef is Too Tall Tom and whatever he brings to the shop we make it work. Only one stipulation, the key ingredient in every meal is to add one can of beer for maximum flavor! On the flip side, The City Garage offers one of the coolest, most unique palettes of retail from a ski shop during the off-season. Can you enlighten us on some of your summer lines? We have been open year round since 1999. Summertime has made us put our thinking cap on a time or two. In the past few summers we have started to expand more into gear for summer fun. Nothing too serious involved, just products that make you think of getting outdoors and enjoying yourself. Ellicottville in the summer brings a wide variety of travelers - whether it be the backpackers on the FLT (Finger Lakes Trail), families going to Allegany State Park, or just the day tripper - we try to have something for everyone. A few staple brands that you will find: ENO hammocks, YETI, GSI outdoors, ROME camping, Stanley, KEEN footwear, BIRKENSTOCK, Kuhl clothing, Xero sandals … come check us out in winter AND summer!

Interview with: SPENCER TIMKEY High 5 GM
Tyler Burns Boardroom on Main Manager
Interview with: CIARA PETERS Soft Goods Manager
Samantha Timkey-Armstrong High 5 GM
Big news! The Boardroom is continuing with two locations (as it did last year), but this time, your 2nd location is relocating to the TOP floor of 14 Washington Street … We’re moving on up! Couldn’t be more thrilled with the move to 14 Washington and being on the main floor. We’ll be ready to rock by Fall Festival. Look for us next door to Adventure Bound onthefly … we’ll have all of the same sweet stuff we’ve got at the Flagship, plus more lifestyle apparel. Ok let’s get to the really good stuff. What are some of the latest and greatest hardgoods that The Boardroom is excited about bringing in this season? Snowboarding is not dead! So many great things happening with hardgoods right now. All of our A+ brands have brought the heat this season, such as the Travis Rice Pro Model (look for Travis in The Fourth Phase, his newest masterpiece), which is one of the multiple Lib Tech all mountain destroyers we have in here. Burton has added the Hammock Strap (super comfy ankle strap) to the Cartel (mens) and the Lexa (ladies). And Salomon Snowboarding’s Str8 Jacket boot technology gives you an internal heel harness to really suck your foot down. All in all, a TON of great stuff for your on-hill experience. Same question, softgoods … We’re a big proponent of layering properly. As in, don’t wear cotton next to your skin because you’ll be cold and miserable. Start with some moisture-wicking base layer from Under Armour or Burton, then follow with a riding flannel from Volcom or 686. With the uber-cold winter we’re going to have, you’re going to want to make sure everything is covered up. Airhole makes a facemask with a built-in breathing hole to avoid dampness, and Anon’s Magna Tech uses magnets to attach the facemask seamlessly to the bottom of the goggle. And not to leave out product for the techie … can you hit on some of the tech goods that you’re stocking up on? Let’s start with GoPro, and the brand-new Hero5 Black. It comes with a built-in GPS, a touchscreen, 3 (!) microphones and shoots in gorgeous 4K resolution. Throw in some SP Gadgets (accessories for your GoPro) and you’ve got yourself a ready-made movie. Really a must have. We’ve also picked up Goal Zero, an outdoor brand that is entirely solar powered/rechargeable. Outdoor Tech continues its powerhouse run with water-resistant bluetooth speakers, which are perfect for any occasion. Speaking of wireless speakers, don’t forget to snag a pair of wireless chips for your helmet! You put a heavy emphasis on junior gear and seasonal snowboard rentals ... We’ve seen the cycle trend up in snowboarding, then down, and we’re really starting to see it trend back up in terms of participation and who we’re getting on the hill. Our ‘tweener’ category has been monstrous the last couple of seasons, as well as the Uber Junior (110 centimeter snowboards, size 11 feet, real dang cute). The goal is to try and get as many kids on the hill as possible in good gear so they have a good experience and keep coming back. Our seasonal snowboard rental fleet consists of brands like Burton, Salomon and Lib Tech - three of our powerhouse retail brands, so you know the stuff your kiddo is on will be the best in the industry. Last year, we saw “Holidays with the Boardroom.” Can we expect Season 2? “Holidays” was something we did because 1) we were bored because it wasn’t snowing; and 2) funny things happen when you drink a bunch of wine. But as we did it, more people kept asking, “When’s the next episode?” It kind of took on a life of its own, and over the summer, folks kept asking if we would be doing it again. So now we kind of have to. We’re going to fire up a podcast this year as well. Listen, this is snowboarding and snowsports. It’s not life or death! Let’s have some fun with it! If that means firing off a couple Game of Thrones references while doing a ski rental, then so be it. The only thing we take seriously is our passion for what we do. This is our 33rd year in business. Cheers to another couple decades of getting people stoked on snowboarding.
Greg Dekdebrun Shop Owner
This past summer was a bit different for you guys. You were OPEN! How did the summer retail business pan out for you? What did you stock the shop with? Do you plan on re-opening next summer as well? We were open! We were slightly apprehensive going into it, but it went very well! We went with a variety of casual and swim wear from companies like O’Neill and Picture Organic Clothing. In addition, we also offered men’s and women’s custom flip-flops, and we freshened up our t-shirt wall with some summer inspired designs. We do plan on being open again next summer, and will be expanding our horizons on inventory by looking at maybe doing a little golf and athletic wear. What’s new in the shop for this coming winter? We are bringing back a fantastic clothing brand, Orage, which we are very excited about! For the racers, we will now be carrying Uvex helmets and goggles. For the skiers, Apex released a new boot called the XP, which is the best one yet! For the snowboarders, we will be carrying Nitro snowboards for the first time this season. What are a few accessories you carry that you would recommend every skier add to their gear bag? Helmets!!! (Safety first.) We also love all things merino wool - socks, layering pieces, neckgators or balaclavas. There is nothing better on a cold day - on and off the slopes than merino wool! Along with snowsports equipment and clothing, you also carry an array of EVLbranded merchandise. Can you give us a glimpse of some of these items you’ve got stocked on shelves? We offer lots of fun things to decorate chalets with or to grab as gifts … we have clothing: t-shirts, sweatshirts, fleeces and jackets; glassware: shot glasses, flasks and koozies; and the ever popular EVL stickers and magnets. Can you hit on some of the services you guys are known for? We are most well-known for our amazing bootfitting, but also for our ski and board tuneups … let’s not forget our rentals, both daily and seasonal. Tell us about your TekScan machine and the custom footbeds you offer … We developed a tandem custom bootfitting system that involves a whole body approach. The first step begins with our Footbalance Custom Insoles; this computerized system analyzes foot shapes and movement. It guides us in building the perfect custom insole for skiing/snowboarding. We also stock insoles for other sports, such as running and walking, or just your everyday casual shoe. The second step involves one of our “boot doctors” assisting a customer in picking out the best boot for their needs based on many factors, including their foot shape, ability, budget, etc. After the perfect boot is picked and heat molded, we use our TekScan machine to create the proper body alignment with the boot and the ski. Our machine can guide us with a visual weight distribution picture. We can then make adjustments to the boot to ensure that the ski is properly weighted when the customer is in their boots. Everyone is welcome to stop in for a demo - we even added two big screen TVs last year for easier viewing of our bootfitting technologies. Favorite watering hole to unwind at after a busy day in the shop …. Definitely the Ellicottville Brewing Company! We may be a little bias, since some of our employees also work there … For more quiet nights, we like to have “family” dinners at each other’s houses. Where’s Greg? Can we expect to see him around this winter? Greg is popping in and out of the store, but is still looking forward to enjoying the awesome winter that is coming! Look for him on the slopes!

SILVER FOX STEAKHOUSE
JOHN HARVARD’S BREW HOUSE
Dubbed Ellicottville’s original steakhouse, the Silver Fox has held a long-standing reputation as one of the most comfortable and elegant restaurants in the village. Nightly chef specials, some of the best cuts of meat around, paired with an extensive wine list make this a top choice for those in search of a finer dining experience. The Silver Fox is also known for its famous Martini Club, which takes place every Friday evening at 5pm - traditional and signature martinis paired with complimentary appetizers for the bar crowd to enjoy. SNOWED-IN Menu Picks: We’d be kidding ourselves if we left off sampling one of their martinis (if you’re of age of course), which are the perfect night-cap to a day on the slopes. We’re also big fans of their steak specials, as well as the wasabi tuna - pan seared encrusted with wasabi, black and white sesame seeds and enhanced with spicy sesame sauce ... mmmm!
One of the most picturesque of all the restaurants in EVL, John Harvard’s is located inside the Tamarack Club right at Holiday Valley. Grab a slopeside seat and enjoy the incredible views of the ski hills (or pools and golf course if you’re visiting in the summer.) An impressive, evolving list of beer and wine await your perusal to accompany the daily specials prepared by their talented kitchen staff. Have a large group? Not to worry, John Harvard’s houses a private dining room, which will surely get the job done whatever your needs. SNOWED-IN Menu Picks: Perfect for sharing after a day on the slopes, the loaded nachos will not disappoint, with both its generous portion size and flavor. (We like it with chicken!) Looking for a proper meal? Harvard’s signature lobster macaroni & cheese boasts creamy cheddar sauce, cavatappi pasta, tomatoes and chunks of lobster meat topped with seasoned bread crumbs and truffle oil.
WHOLESOME HIDEAWAY
DOM’S BUTCHER BLOCK
Entering into their second year of business, Wholesome Hideaway has more to offer than ever. This eat-in or carry out café features an assortment of menu options including soups, sandwiches, tacos, fresh juices, and a cooler full of anything ranging from a steel cut oat breakfast bowl to turtle brownies for dessert. You can check out the current menu on their website; the menu offerings change with the seasons. Wholesome Hideaway’s newest addition is their sister boutique, Entertaining Company, making catering small dinners to special events and hosting classes their latest added feature. SNOWED-IN Menu Picks: Feed your body well with any of Wholesome Hideaway’s flavorful sandwiches. For the Fall, we recommend the “Cucumber Classic” - cucumbers, hummus, sprouts, sliced tomato, red onions, and black olives. Pair it with the cafe’s “soup of the day” and you’ve got yourself a “wholesome” meal.
Dom’s Butcher Block, located in the Washington Square complex behind The Daily Grind, is your #1 place to find fresh cut meat, processed in-house daily. Take your pick from the cases, or put in your request for custom cuts. The on-site smoker ensures that family owners Ken, Annette & Tyler Auteri “only smoke the best” … meat, that is. All of their smoked meats are made using time tested, old-fashioned techniques right on the premises. You’ll also find fresh homemade sausage (hot, mild and maple flavored), free range chicken, and a full line of D’Avolio olive oils, vinegars and gourmet pastas and sauces. SNOWED-IN Menu Picks: Pair your pasta with Twisted Vine Gardens’ VODKA SAUCE. We also recommend you stock up on Dom’s homemade beef sticks and beef jerky - perfect for stashing in your pocket to take up on the hill each weekend you come out to ski.
EVL CHEESE COMPANY
WINERY OF ELLICOTTVILLE
Sliced from the Cuba Cheese Shop, EVL Cheese Co. is your go-to for cheeses, meats and all sorts of treats! Their downtown location (in the plaza behind Kwik Fill), stocks an amazing 225+ cheeses! The store also offers salt rising breads, fresh cheese curd, gourmet delicacies, specialty meats, jams and jellies, along with an attractive inventory of great gift ideas - from cutting boards to fancy kitchen wares to local art and handmade jewelry. Order a custom made cheese tray or gift basket for your next event. SNOWED-IN Menu Picks: Dessert cheeses! Take a taste on the wild side with some of the unique (and oh-so-good) high-end cheeses available in the “Big” case at EVL Cheese Company. Choose from Stilton with Mango and Ginger, Blueberry, or Apricots, 7-year Quebec Cheddar, St. Agur Blue Cheese, Raclette and so many more! Unique flavors worth indulging in. After all, who could pass up a cheese called The Drunken Goat?
Owner Dominic Spicola’s father, Francesco, taught him that making excellent wine requires great care and attention. Making the right adjustments at the right time are crucial to achieving optimal quality. Dominic and his son-in-law, Sam Sheehy, have honed their skills for years, and couldn’t be prouder of the lineup of premium quality wines that the Winery of Ellicottville is offering today. Never mind the pile of medals that their wines have won in competition. Let your tastebuds be the judge. Wine tastings available daily. SNOWED-IN Menu Picks: Snow Fox: this extra sweet, crisp white wine made with Niagara grapes showcases a touch of fruitiness. Pair with sweet and salty foods. More of a red wine drinker? Try the Marquette: a dry, medium bodied red wine accented with hints of cranberry and vanilla cream. Marquette works nicely with any tomato-based pasta dish, along with pork, chicken, and steak. We also recommend you stop in and try the winery’s latest creation, Berry Hard Cider.

Stop in and enjoy one of Four Mile’s fine craft brews, satisfy your hunger with a bite to eat from their dining menu (vegan options available), and be sure to shop the brewery’s retail so that you can take a piece of Four Mile Brewing Company home with you.
