Art in the Wilds: The Finest Fine Art Show in the Heart of the Allegheny National Forest

Music Festival

By Anjanette Nicolazzo Famously touted as the “Black Cherry Capital of the World,” Kane, Pennsylvania is also home to one of the most eclectic fine arts shows in the area, Art in the Wilds. Taking place this year on June 28-29 in scenic Evergreen Park, the show is celebrating its eighth year of creative splendor and will welcome over 5,000 guests. Art in the Wilds isn’t your traditional run-of-the-mill craft festival. This juried fine art show features art for sale ranging from acrylics and oils, to watercolors, drawing/pastels, metal, glass, clay/porcelain, photography, print making/graphics, mixed media, fabric/fiber, wood, leather and jewelry. The event runs from 10:00am-5:00pm daily; admission is free. A few new show superfluities include artist awards and musical duo Coyote Moon performing live on Sunday from 3:00-5:00pm in the gazebo. Additionally, a Bucktail Regiment Encampment will be taking place at the lower end of Evergreen Park throughout the show to commemorate Pennsylvania’s most famous Civil War unit. “We started Art in the Wilds with about 23 artists and we are now nearing 40,” exclaimed Marilyn Blackmore, Director. “This year’s group of artists is a nice mix of different media including several new artists and some of the old favorites.” Marilyn provides a “sneak peak” of what you might find at the show… Cheri Lee Anderton-Yarnell, a returning potter from Franklin, PA, always has something new. This year she has been working on “Spirit Pots,” which are symbolic of her reverence for the natural world. Her concern for endangered ocean mammals emerges in her whale pieces; her quiet enjoyment of Pennsylvania woods and waterways is evident in her work with plant impressions, amphibians and reptiles as well as in her overall design and textural decorations. Dewy Fladd, who hails from Rushville, NY, is a digital photographer who has created a series of photographs called “Americana.” Taking inspiration from photographers like Ansel Adams and Edward Weston (F64 club), he strives for the detail and quality in each image, often shooting with the lens closed down all the way, yet always looking for the “decisive moment” in each picture that tells the story. Diane Levenson, from Conestoga, PA, is a new artist who includes everything from whimsical sculptures to beautiful benches, planters and repurposed metal items that she transforms into one-of-a-kind creations. The production of Art in the Wilds revolves around a committee of 15 members that work strictly on a volunteer basis. “Some friends sitting on a porch together thought there should be an art event that would benefit artists and bring local and area economic development in the form of visitors to Kane. The idea that the event would be called Art in the Wilds developed and we began over a year of researching other shows and artists,” said Marilyn. Embarking on almost a decade of success, the show continues to grow. The testimonials from the show only speak for themselves. “Volunteers were outstanding. It’s not often that artisans are treated so well by show organizers. Can’t wait for next year! One of the best shows I do,” said Deborah Moyer, Jewelry (2012-‘13 Show). “Nicest group of people in any show I do and I do a lot,” according to Jeff Ondash, Letter Photographer (2012 Show). The Art in the Wilds committee looks forward to welcoming you into their quaint little town, located right in the heart of the Allegheny National Forest. Art in the Wilds at Evergreen Park is located on South Fraley and Birch Streets in Kane, PA. For more information on Art in the Wilds, including information on lodging and a full list of artists at this year’s show, visit their highly informational website at www.artinthewilds.org, call Marilyn at 814-837-7167 or email mab@penn.com. Around the Block: Soak up the Sun

Grab Some Shades at Do-Op and Head to Holiday Valley for a Summer Full of Outdoor Relaxation & Fun By Spencer Timkey Summer in Ellicottville rarely disappoints. It is one of the few places in the country where temperature, humidity and sunshine all co-exist to make for some pretty awesome and comfortable weather. There is much to do when summertime rolls around - the sheer number of activities are almost too much for one person to tackle (we’ve got full confidence in you, however.) Do-Op, a newcomer to Ellicottville’s retail scene, is one of the go-to spots for sunglasses and hats. You’re going to need them when you hit up the pools at Holiday Valley!

DO-OP GEAR A Truly Innovative Retailer of Sunglasses and More

OUTDOORS AT HOLIDAY VALLEY RESORT Easy Leisure to Intense, Physical Activities ... Pick Your Passion

Holiday Valley Road, Ellicottville, NY 14731 Ph. 716-699-2345 • www.holidayvalley.com

Even though Do-Op’s existence is still in its infancy, owner Bill Stoll opened the doors to provide town with another retail option for our visitors. Specializing in sunglasses, hats and other sporting goods accessories, Do-Op calls the space between Tip’s Up and Madigan’s home.

Much more than your average resort, Holiday Valley’s summer offerings range from easy leisure to intense, physical activities. Dad can play 18 holes of golf while mom and the kids hang at the pool (or vice-versa!), then everyone can head up to Sky High Adventure Park for some heart-pounding, aerial thrills.

The story behind the store’s opening is rather intriguing. Stoll, who currently works in medical research development and has for the past 20-odd years, owns a patent for bio-sensors. “I’ve worked with a lot of different medical technology, but this one - bio-sensors - is something that’s really cool. They monitor your blood oxygen (among other things) using infrared technology. Companies like Google and Apple are leading the charge on this type of bio-tech and incorporating it into their wearable technologies.” Stoll hopes to use his patent and incorporate this bio-sensor tech into a pair of fashionable, everyday sunglasses. He’s currently working on a prototype, but he’s not rushing anything - he wants to make sure the design and tech is perfect. Until that time comes, Stoll is catering to what the public wants. When the sun is out, you need to protect those eyes! “We’re just starting to get the bulk of our inventory,” Stoll said. “There are tons of different styles and colors - we want to be able to offer something to everyone. One of our brands is called Dye, which got its start in the paintball world. The stuff is excellent, and so far has been selling very well.” A big seller in our current market (especially in the winter) are sunglasses (goggles) with what’s called quick change lens tech. It is exactly what it sounds like - giving the consumer the ability to quickly change the lenses in their eyewear if they encounter different, variable conditions. Do-Op carries Switch, which is one such company that offers sunglasses with this tech. But Do-Op isn’t limited to just eyewear. Stoll also brought in the high-end Kask helmet brand out of Italy. Ordering a couple samples allows a customer to check it out and order one if they so choose. “The idea behind the store was to provide a channel to market the glasses that we hope to make,” said Stoll. “As of right now, the design is pretty well solidified, and the first round of prototypes will be without electronics. When we get closer to production, we’ll start displaying prototypes of the finished Do-Op product.” If you haven’t stopped into Do-Op yet, make sure you do so the next time you’re in town. Stoll is marketing the store as a sports activity destination - even if you don’t ski or snowboard, you can still come in and use stuff for hiking, biking, golfing, etc. “So far, people have been very receptive to it,” Stoll said. “We started as headgear-specific, but now, we’re taking on more of a ‘gear from the waist up’ so we can appeal to a wider range of people.”

The pool complex, which was redone just a couple short years ago, provides plenty of seating, food service and offers summertime memberships. With three pools - a toddler pool, a lap pool and the big pool (with a slide and diving board!) - the complex boasts something for everyone in the family. Food service comes courtesy of John Harvard’s at the Tamarack Club, and Holiday Valley’s awesome servers hustle to make sure the kids aren’t hungry. Adjacent to the pool complex lies the Cabana Bar, where one (of age) can get a drink to cool off. Not only does the Cabana Bar offer shade and drinks, but there are also games - cornhole, ping pong, etc. - to keep you occupied if you don’t want to get in the water. Don’t forget about the Mudslide Obstacle Trail Run on June 14! You may have heard of those *other* intense races, where you get zapped, have to jump through fire and stay generally miserable. This is not one of those races! With 3.5 and 5.4-mile courses to choose from, the Mudslide is exactly what it sounds like - there are 11 obstacles, you will get muddy, and it is a blast. Multiple package options for this event are available, but register soon! Go to Active.com and search for Holiday Valley Mudslide. If you’ve never been to Sky High Adventure Park, what are you waiting for? The aerial park, now in its 4th summer, boasts 13 different courses of varying difficulty. Get harnessed, go through a short safety briefing, and you’re ready to channel your inner Tarzan (or Jane!) New for this year comes the Black Widow, a black-diamond course where climbers will have to conquer two rope ladders (one looks like a pirate ladder, the other like a spider web) and exit the course via a thrilling “free fall” descender. The Mountain Coaster takes you to the top of the hill in a sled, and the way down sees you dip and twirl - all of that, while you control the speed! And relatively new is the 3D Climbing Forest. Designed in Germany, the Climbing Forest takes the hand holds of a rock climbing wall and straps them periodically up a tree. After you’re harnessed, a safety monitor will strap you to a self-belay and off you go! Whether you are searching for ample sunshine and lots of action or prefer to relax in the shade with a nice cold one, Holiday Valley will keep your summer hot! Click over to www.holidayvalley.com to learn about all the outdoor fun available at the resort.

One-on-One with:

A Conversation with Scott “Scotty” Johnson HULICK: Thanks for taking time to talk to me. I know you guys are getting ready to hit the road tomorrow. JOHNSON: Yeah, it’s gonna be a busy summer, as usual.

Ellicottville Summer Music Festival’s 2014 Headliner

HULICK: Have you been to Ellicottville before? JOHNSON: We’ve been to the WNY area before, but I don’t think to Ellicottville. It’s funny … you know that Johnny Cash song, “I’ve Been Every Where Man”? (laughs) You think you haven’t been in that place before and then you get there and you all of a sudden think … I was here once. HULICK: (laughs) How many shows are you doing this summer? JOHNSON: You know, I just counted and we got 44 books right now. Then I just found out that we’re doing Good Morning America, I believe first part of August. HULICK: Must be for their Summer Concert in the Park Friday mornings. JOHNSON: Yes. I guess we have 45 books now. (laughs) I told my friends I didn’t think it was going to be a busy summer … well I was wrong. HULICK: Your song, “Hey Jealousy,” is played a lot on local radio stations. The station we have on at work plays it and a co-worker didn’t recognize who the Gin Blossoms were when she heard I was interviewing you, so when the song came on I told her that’s who you were and she said, “That’s the Gin Blossoms? I love that song!” JOHNSON: Really? That’s great! (laughs) I’d rather her know the songs and not the name. HULICK: You guys took a 4-year break and when you came back together I read that there was a “certain civility,” as expressed by one of the band members. JOHNSON: When you’re young and you have some success and you get a little money in the bank, especially after being a struggling artist for so many years, you kind of get in your own head … you think it’s all about you. That ego takes over. So we took some time off to do different projects. We basically came together to do a reunion tour and it was so successful. We were shocked. We all started thinking how silly it was not to keep the band together because we all get along, we all like each other … we felt like brothers, like family. HULICK: How do you like your music to be defined? I know that your sound has been described as “jangle pop.” What exactly is that? JOHNSON: It’s also been described as “jangle crunch.” It’s when one guy plays the down and dirty distortion parts and then the other guitarist will like “jangle,” basically doing a more pop based sound … kind of like chiming guitars. The band The Byrds were known for it. Sometimes during a show in the middle of a song we’ll switch off and Jesse will do the chords and the rock rhythm and then I’ll do the “jangly bits.” That just came to be our thing.

.............................. Sunday, July 6 | Slopes of Holiday Valley By Melanie Hulick The Gin Blossoms are bringing their jangle pop sound to Ellicottville for a slopeside concert to close the 2014 Summer Music Festival on Sunday, July 6. The Tempe-based band started out in the late 80’s with their unique sound that took them all the way to a Grammy nomination for their song, “As Long As It Matters.” Unfortunately they lost to The Beatles, which guitarist Jesse Valenzuela said, “It was pretty cool to lose a Grammy to the Beatles. Who else would you want to lose out to?” With songs like “Hey Jealousy,” “Until I Fall Away,” “Allison Road” and “Found Out About You,” the band quickly moved up the charts and toured extensively for years. They even found great success in films and television with their songs being included in soundtracks for the films “Speed” and “Wayne’s World 2,” until an agreed upon hiatus had the members going their separate ways to work on solo projects. Reconvening in their hometown of Tempe on New Year’s Eve 2001, they were reenergized and ready to take on the world and they haven’t looked back. The Summer Local caught up with guitarist Scott “Scotty” Johnson the day before the band was getting set to start out on their summer tour to talk about their busy schedule this summer, their sound and the weather.

HULICK: Some bands try and reinvent themselves when they come together after a break, but you guys are staying true to your original sound. JOHNSON: It’s funny … I do interviews throughout the year and people always ask me if on our next record we are going to change the style of our music. My answer is always no. We’re not going to try and reinvent the wheel … we’re not going to put a reggae record out or anything. (laughs) I’m all about sticking to what you’re good at. HULICK: As your albums have progressed through the years, I’m sure you can hear and feel some type of evolution that maybe you didn’t necessarily strive for but it happened … just through the years of experience. JOHNSON: Yes, you’re right. We’ve tried to experiment with different kinds of grooves and a different feel to our songs, but we’ve never tried to reinvent ourselves. Some bands are good at that and that’s great, but we don’t have any plans to change it up that much. HULICK: Are you working on any new projects? JOHNSON: We’ve had a lot of success in films and television with our music, so we want to get together and write some songs to hopefully submit them for release through film and television. Then in the process we will have songs we can release on a new album. Although the days of doing 12 songs seem to be gone … it’s all different now. It’s like less is more. However some are releasing 12 plus song albums, like Bruno Mars. He’s a big success. HULICK: What can we expect from your show? JOHNSON: It’s usually pretty upbeat and energetic. Our singer, Robin, likes to get out there with the crowd. He’s one of those singers that don’t like staying behind the microphone. He has his tambourine and he wants people to play it and he high fives people. It’s a very up show.

With previous summer tours, Summerland in 2012 and 2013’s Under The Sun Tour, Gin Blossoms is the perfect fit for Ellicottville’s Summer Music Festival.

HULICK: Great! Well it’s on the ski slopes outdoors so that is a perfect place for him to connect with the crowd and get them involved. JOHNSON: Terrific! You promise it’s gonna be good weather right?

Tickets for the Ellicottville venue are $25 pre-sale (children 12 and under are free) or $35 at the gate. To purchase tickets, head to any Wegmans location, call 800-349-9099 or click over to www.ellicottvilleny.com. This year’s Summer Music Festival is sponsored in part by the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce, Holiday Valley Resort and M&T Bank. For more information on the Gin Blossoms, visit their website at www.ginblossoms.net.

HULICK: (laughs) I will do everything I can to make sure that happens for you. The one thing you guys must do while you are here is get out and walk through the village of Ellicottville. It is so gorgeous. We are really looking forward to you coming and hopefully bringing the summer weather with you. JOHNSON: Sounds good … and we’ll bring the weather with us.

By Megan E. Sorokes Deep in the heart of the Allegheny Mountains, there’s a place where the road ends and the west begins, so grab your cowboy boots and ten-gallon hat for an experience unlike any other. It’s time for the Ellicottville Championship Rodeo. “It’s one of the largest IPRA/APRA sanctioned rodeos in the Northeast,” said John Kent, who started the rodeo with his wife, Karen, 26 years ago. “I’m in charge of all the events,” he said, noting that Karen runs the kitchen and front office, but that his responsibilities range from the parking to crowd control and security to concessions and booking talent for entertainment like the rawhide rodeo. “I’ve done business with the stock contractor for the rawhide rodeo for the entire 26 years we’ve been doing rodeos,” Mr. Kent said. “That’s unheard of - staying with the same contractor - but we hit it off. He knows what I expect, and he gets it done.” Other exciting attractions at the rodeo include bareback bronc riding, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, calf roping, cowgirl barrel racing, team roping, junior bull riding, bull riding and cattle penning. “We have ten events in all, including girls breakaway roping, which is new this year,” Mr. Kent said. “Cowgirl breakaway is getting big out there in the rodeo world, and my daughter talked me into it, so I told her she has to do it.” Mr. Kent hopes the added event will help draw in more contestants to the rodeo. “We currently have close to 500 contestants a year,” he noted. “With girls breakaway, we should break that number with no problem.” The Ellicottville Championship Rodeo also includes a few kid-friendly events, such as stick-horse races and junior bull riding, which Mr. Kent said is important when raising new cowboys and cowgirls. “More and more kids want to ride bucking ponies and bulls,” he said. “We want to start them young and start them right, so they grow up to be professionals. The rodeo is fun for the whole family, and all ages love it. People sit on the edge of their seats, cheering and applauding the cowboys and cowgirls. We have folks in their 80s who come in and watch.” The Ellicottville Championship Rodeo attracts rodeo enthusiasts from the area and around the world. “We have people driving two to three hours or further, but some that come from all over the world from countries like Germany, France and Italy,” Mr. Kent said, noting that a change in advertising efforts made the rodeo more successful. “An oldtimer in the rodeo business once asked me how much I spent on advertising, and when I told him, he suggested I double it. We took his advice, and it’s worked. That’s why I’m still here.”

Around February, the seasoned trio began planning this year’s program, printing and preparing advertising, and gathering sponsors for the event. “It used to be just my wife and I,” Mr. Kent said. “My daughter, Tammie, is back now, and she’s a big help. We need the young input because we would grow stale if we didn’t have it. There are different acts each year, and we try and change it up. Sometimes I hire my acts in August or September, just after the rodeo. Other times, I hire them right then and there when the rodeo is over.” This year’s rodeo features three trick riders from Texas, a clown act from Mississippi and a rodeo announcer from Tennessee. “Our clown, Dusty Myers, has won several International Finals Rodeo (IFR) awards for Funniest Clown of the Year,” Mr. Kent noted. The rodeo kicks off Thursday, July 3 through Saturday, July 5 at 7:00pm each night and continues through Sunday, July 6 at 2:00pm with plenty of food, drinks, entertainment and fun for the whole family. Each day, the gates open two hours before the show so visitors can enjoy the rodeo midway. “Make sure to come with an appetite,” Mr. Kent said, highlighting the chicken barbeque as one the rodeo favorites. “We also have fireworks each night after the rodeo, and everyone loves those.” This year’s sponsors include Gowanda Harley-Davidson, as well as Tim and Bonnie’s Pizza of Ellicottville. Presale tickets for the rodeo are available online at www. ellicottvillerodeo.com until a week prior to the rodeo. The cost is $9 for children ages 12 and under; free for children under age 5, and $17 for ages 13 and up. Parking is free, and the event is handicap accessible. “Plenty of tickets are available at the gate as well,” Mr. Kent said. “The show goes on, rain or shine. We have die-hard fans. Our cowboys are tough.” For anyone who has yet to attend the rodeo, it might come as a surprise to learn just how exciting the event is for the area. “People don’t realize it’s the real deal with the bucking horses, bull riding and other events,” Mr. Kent said. “The talent is outstanding, and we have big names that have come in and still come in. There are cowboys and cowgirls from all over the world … world champions right here.” “If someone is looking for an exciting afternoon, he or she needs to attend because there’s plenty of excitement,” Mr. Kent explained. “Many think the rodeo is something our ancestors did, and so many people come up to us after attending the first time and say they didn’t realize how big this event was, or tell us they’ll be back next year.” “It’s a riot,” Mr. Kent said of the Ellicottville Championship Rodeo. “You name it, we got it. It’s a great time.” For full details on this year’s event, head to www.ellicottvillerodeo. com or call 716-699-4839.

Take home this Spanish favorite with its especially eye-appealing label. Not only is its exterior a beauty, but its simple flavor profile will also impress the most refined oenophile - lighter than a Cabernet Sauvignon, showing fruit with scrumptious notes of juicy plums and sweet berries (yet not cloyingly sweet), and finishing with a hint of pepper. Furthermore, as it is grown in the EU, it adheres to stricter standards regarding pesticide and herbicide applications - all of this and more at just $10.99.

Raclette is a semi-firm, cow’s milk cheese most commonly used for melting. Raclette is also a dish indigenous to parts of Switzerland. The Raclette cheese round is heated, either in front of a fire or by a special machine, then scraped onto diners’ plates; the term raclette derives from the French word racler, meaning “to scrape,” a reference to the fact that the melted cheese must be scraped from the unmelted part of the cheese onto the plate. Stop into EVL Cheese Company and pick up your Raclette cheese round.

DINING IN THE BEER GARDEN WITH EBC CHEF JOSHUA McDOWELL

Pacific Fish with an EVL Twist Sesame Encrusted Mahi with a Mango Glaze, Served with Spiced Quinoa & Spring Veggies By Joshua McDowell

” l a c o L r e m m u S “ f The o k c i P Menu Month the

The name ‘Mahi Mahi’ in Hawaiian translates to “very strong.” Mahi is a surface-dwelling ray-finned fish found in tropical and subtropical waters worldwide. We here at EBC love Mahi - it is a flavorful white fish with a brilliant texture. In this month’s dish, the Mahi’s unique flavor blends well with our other ingredients. This dish also offers a very health conscious option for those looking to feed their body with good nutrition. Utilizing quinoa keeps the naughty gluten away, yet provides an interesting texture and flavor profile for the starch. In an effort to continually stay ahead of our guests’ wants and needs, I always seems to have a bit of a healthy twist at the forefront of my cuisine … must be a sign of the times. Our dish here makes good use of the seasonal vegetables that will soon be popping up in our gardens and farmers markets - one of the many things we look forward to as the seasons change. The longer days and warmer temps offer a fine appreciation of the outdoors - spending more time in the sun, mowing our lawns, and tending to all that tedious landscaping which many gardeners and homeowners take pride in.

BEER PAIRING

BEER PAIRING: EBC’S MOW MASTER ULTRA PALE ALE 5.0 ABV

With this being said, there is no better beer to accompany our Mahi than Ellicottville Brewing Company’s infamous:

SESAME ENCRUSTED MAHI WITH A MANGO GLAZE Mahi 6 to 8oz piece Sesame seeds Red quinoa Spanish onion Chicken stock Good quality Indian mango Chutney Orange juice Asparagus

Featuring sweet Belgian Cara malts and an array of aromatic American hops including Citra, in a Hopback and our “Hop bombing” process to create a citrusy summer pale that is light on body and bitterness, but big on flavor and aroma … a perfect brew for those long hot days in the sun. The fruity notes lend themselves very well to our mango glaze and toasted sesame seeds on our fish. Until next time folks, have fun, be safe, and may the wind be ever at your back, and the sunshine warm upon your face.

Zucchini Yellow Squash Red Bell Peppers Scallions Butter Oil for cooking (I prefer Extra Virgin) Salt & Pepper Cayenne pepper

ABOUT THE CHEF

First thing’s first … let’s get the quinoa going. Dice up the onion very finely. In a pot, sweat the onion in a little oil, add the quinoa and a pinch of cayenne, and cook until toasted. Top with chicken stock, cover, and let simmer until tender. Next we need to season the fish and press it into the sesame seeds. Sauté the Mahi lightly over medium heat to protect the sesame seeds from burning. Once one side of the fish is nicely toasted, flip the fish over and place in the oven to finish. Mix equal parts of the mango chutney and orange juice and stir or shake vigorously. As the fish comes out of the oven, baste it with the glaze. The heat from the fish will grab a hold of the glaze and not let go. Cook up your vegetables to accompany our fish. Don’t forget the butter, salt and pepper folks. Place your quinoa down in a little mound in the center of the plate. Arrange your vegetables around the quinoa, then place our beautifully golden toasted Mahi on top. Adding another tablespoon of glaze won’t hurt. Top with some thin sliced scallions, grab your Mow Master and enjoy.

Chef Joshua McDowell is a graduate of the Pennsylvania Institute of Culinary Arts of Pittsburgh, PA. He carries a Bachelor’s degree in Culinary Arts and offers over 17 years of experience in the food service industry. He has spent the last 11 years honing his skills in and around the Ellicottville, NY area, and last year was introduced as Executive Chef at the Ellicottville Brewing Company, 28 Monroe Street, downtown Ellicottville, 716-699-2537, www.ellicottvillebrewing.com.

Nature’s Remedy

natural foods market & holistic wellness center

Diabesity ... Gain Control of Your Sugar, Your Weight and Your Life!

By Dr. Kristina Barlow, N.D., C.S.T. FedUpMovie.com (in theatres as of May 9) … this documentary about our current food industry will open your eyes and blow your mind. By the end you will completely understand why Americans are unhealthy and overweight or obese. In fact, according to the World Health Organization for 2012, the U.S. was ranked #17 out of 17 of the most affluent countries in the world for health. No one anywhere is arguing … we are an extremely unhealthy nation. The questions that matter: Why? And, what are the solutions?

Why are we so unhealthy and obese as a country that spends more money than ANY other country on health care costs? (OECD Health Data 2012.) My four personal “A-Ha” moments provide the answer that is excellently documented in “Fed Up.” In 1993, while attending undergrad for Biology, I read my very first natural health book, “Nutrition and Degenerative Diseases” by Weston A. Price (see westonaprice.org). Dr. Price traveled the world in the 1950’s with his wife, observing dental caries among indigenous populations and comparing them to the nearest “modernized” society. What differentiated the indigenous lifestyle from the “modernized” lifestyle was simply SUGAR! Almost 20 years later I simultaneously read a booklet called “Is Candida Sabotaging Your Life?” and watched a documentary called “Hungry for Change.” The message of both campaigns: Stop Eating Sugar! This year I became an In.Form coach (see info below on my In.Form classes in Ellicottville) and found much inspiration in Mark Hyman, M.D. Cut down or cut out sugar and all foods that convert to sugar. For simplicity sake, Diabesity can be defined as any imbalance in blood sugar and/or insulin levels, leading to inflammation and causing obesity and other health concerns such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, mood swings, inability to focus and concentrate, hormonal disturbances, skin disorders, hypertension, high cholesterol and hyperactivity. Call it Diabesity, Dysglycemia, Pre-Diabetes, Diabetes I and II (even III and IV), Hyperinsulinemia, Metabolic Syndrome X, or Syndrome X. But don’t ignore it! Here are eight ways you can start to balance your blood sugar levels and maintain them … you WILL see results in your health and your weight loss.

Controlling Your Blood Sugar Levels Will Help You Gain Control of Your Weight & Your Life! 1.

Three Month Program to Balance High Blood Sugar Levels: Sweet Fx, Spirulina, Chromium GTF, ProPancreas and Liquid Chlorophyll. Also, elimination of sugar, grains, fruit, alcohol and starchy vegetables.

2.

3.

Food Elimination: Sugar, processed corn and soy, wheat, alcohol, starchy vegetables, dairy and too much fruit.

4.

5.

Start your day with 20-25 grams of protein: The best way I have found to do this is with a shake: one cup non-dairy milk (almond, coconut, flax, hemp or macadamia - please no soy), one cup water, frozen berries of your choice, 1 scoop Love and Peas, 1 scoop Nature’s Harvest, 1 ounce Ionic Minerals, 1 Tbsp chia seeds and 1 Tbsp hemp seeds. Other things to add: cacao powder, powdered peanut butter (less fat and less allergens), Ultimate GreenZone or flax seed meal.

EXERCISE! Especially strength/reistance training and CrossFit workouts with Kim Duke at Core Performance. Zumba with Lillian Dirito at St. Paul’s Lutheran church on Mon/Wed/Fri from 8:00-9:00am. Hike. Run. Walk with me from 10:30-11:30am on Tuesday mornings at Nature’s Remedy.

6.

7.

Educate Yourself: HungryForChange.tv, FedUpMovie.com, The Blood Sugar Solution and The 10-Day Detox by Mark Hyman, M.D., The 21-Day Sugar Detox and Practical Paleo by Diane Sanfilippo, The Zone Diet and In.Form (see below).

Do a 30-Day Detoxification program: CleanStart for 15 days followed by Candida Clear for another 15 days. CleanStart consists of a fiber drink with three capsules that cleanses the liver and the intestines. Candida Clear consists of enzymes that break down the cell wall of Candida albicans and herbs that directly kill the yeast.

Juice: with Jack LaLanne, Breville or Champion juicers and Blend with a VitaMix or BlendTec. The goal is to increase your intake of green veggies! Great website: rebootwithjoe.com/recipes.

8.

Join my In.Form health and weight loss program: If you are interested in joining late, I will personally catch you up on any missed classes with a personalized consultation. Dr. Hyman came to a very effective solution for permanent lifestyle changes promoting health and weight loss: COMMUNITY. The way people are changing is in a group. Please contact me for more information on this very effective, local weight loss group.

By the end of naturopathic school, I could not lose my extra 20 pounds even while running 3-5 miles/day! My classmate said, “Cut out all sugar and wheat … you will lose weight!” I was so unwilling because this was my comfort zone under so much stress. My addictions. As I now suggest this to my clients, I receive the same response. “Oh, no! What would I eat?” For most of you (excluding athletes) counting calories and exercising has not usually worked. It’s much bigger than that as the quality of the calories matters more than the quantity. The average American eats 175 pounds of sugar per year compared to 4 pounds per person per year in the 17th century. Our modern day food scientists are brilliant at creating “foodlike” substances that create addictions and ignite the pleasure centers of our brains, similar to the neurological effects of alcohol, cocaine, heroine, and pornography. Please join thousands of people across the nation in gaining knowledge about our food industry, facing food/sugar addictions and taking the time to prepare whole foods again. Your whole life will transform as you transform your whole life!

The Enchanted Mountains

. . . Naturally Yours

Cattaraugus County Brings the Summer Heat with Fun Events We are starting to finally feel the sunshine! With summer making its official entrance this month, it is a time to relax out in the sun, take the family on vacation, feel energized by the abundance of light and explore your surroundings. The place to be this summer for all the hottest events is in the picturesque hills of the Enchanted Mountains. The Seneca Allegany Casino’s sizzlin’ summer line-up of events will get you out to enjoy those cool nights, as will the Little Valley Speedway and the Cattaraugus County Museum. We sure know how to make the most of your summer and give you fun in the sun at our campgrounds – look for the Enchanted Mountains on Facebook for descriptions and photos. Keep your eye out and GPS ready for 12 new caches along the New York Amish Geo Trail Part 2 (NYAGT Part 2) that were just released! Discover this newest way to get you seeing the countryside of our County. The Seneca Allegany Casino has a superb series coming at you this summer. The events for June alone include John Legend (June 13), Melissa Etheridge (June 22), and Jeff Dunham (June 27). Purchase your tickets fast though, as they are sure to sell out quickly! Plan ahead for Survivor, KC and the Sunshine Band, Yes, and Jim Gaffagin all coming in July.

Get your engines roaring with the heat of competition sitting alongside the dirt track. Visit Little Valley Speedway located on the Cattaraugus County Fairgrounds for their monthly night of races, including many different models and a fireworks spectacular for the 3rd and 4th of July. Come out to support your favorite car or just to have some fun in the stands.

Spend your “Summer at the Stone House.” The Cattaraugus County Museum (formerly known as the Poor or Stone House) is hosting events all summer long in their Civil War and Cultural Programs series. Even if you’re not a history buff, there will be something for you to enjoy. Whether it’s listening to the old time music from the war, seeing re-enactors, or learning how to determine the age of arrowheads, nine events in total all lead up to the 100-year celebration of the dedication of the museum! Join in this afternoon event that will showcase a brass band, guest speakers and an encampment.

All the Towns in our County are on board to provide you with a great start to summer. Join Randolph in their 2014 Arts and Craft Festival on June 14. This FREE event is filled with vendors along the historic Main Street, children activities and live entertainment. The Hinsdale American Legion Post will host their first annual Ischua Valley Summer Fest with a motorcycle scavenger hunt, horseshoe tournament, live music and dice run June 22-24. Afterwards, on June 24, hop over to Allegany for the start of the 77th annual Old Home Week. Enjoy a carnival, parades, and firemen water fights! Horse lovers look no further than the Enchanted Mountains for magnificent rides through old forests, friendly guides, and as many equestrian events as you could hope for. Compete in the Little Valley Riders Club Extreme Cowboy events starting June 1, or Creekside Round-Up’s Open Family Game Show on June 15. Ride along with the gang at the Spring Trail Ride at Allegany State Park the weekend of June 6, or with the Horse Council on a Father’s Day Ride at Pine Hill.

Nothing quite says summer like going on a camping trip. Our campgrounds offer an escape from the ordinary and a chance to reconnect with each other and nature. Lake Lane Getaway hosts a FREE fishing derby the kids are sure to love, June 7-8, with lots of huge prizes! Each campground has many unique features and more can be found by visiting the Enchanted Mountains website. Allegany State Park has one of the coolest events coming the last weekend of June … the annual “Raccoon Rally” turns the Park into everything “cycling.” Compete in any of the races or watch from the sidelines. One of the fan favorites is the rock jumping event, where cyclists masterfully navigate a course through and on Thunder Rocks. So rule your summer by making a trip to the Enchanted Mountains of Western New York.

MELISSA ETHERIDGE “This is ME” Solo Tour: An Intimate Performance Coming to Salamanca

A Conversation with Melissa HULICK: You’re returning to Seneca Allegany Casino! You were here almost 3 years ago, and the show was incredible. This time around the show is going to be a little different. ETHERIDGE: Thank you! Yes, it’s a solo show. It’s just me on stage, but there’s a lot happening because I play a lot of different things and I use some technology to create loops and create more layers of music. It’s one of my favorite shows I’ve done and it’s been quite successful. HULICK: You’ve been cancer free for 10 years now. Are you still feeling good? ETHERIDGE: 10 years!!! (we both shout) Yea!!!! I’m healthier than ever. I have

figured this out … health equals what I eat and the amount of stress I have in my life. If I can keep those things in the healthy boundaries, we’re good.

HULICK: You have a new album coming out soon titled, “This Is Me.” ETHERIDGE: Yes! I’m very excited about this. It’s my first album that I have not

been with a major record label. I’ve been with Island Records for 25 years and I decided to go independently this year. It’s a big jump, but it’s really possible nowadays. I’m going to own my own record!

HULICK: That’s exciting! What I’ve read about the album so far is that the critics are giving it a thumbs-up. ETHERIDGE: I really hope I don’t let them down. It’s like I took the momentum of the past 25 years of albums that I’ve made and taken everything I’ve learned, and taken everything I’ve learned on the stage, and packed it into this one album. I’m really excited about it.

HULICK: Do you know what the first single is going to be? ETHERIDGE: It’s called “Take My Number” ... I decided that this morning in fact. HULICK: You’ve had quite a year so far Melissa. Honestly! You were a special

.............................. SUNDAY | June 22, 2014 By Melanie Hulick Singer-songwriter Melissa Etheridge has been rocking the music industry for 25 years now and she has no plans of slowing down. Embarking on another tour this spring and summer, Etheridge is doing it differently this time around. The “This Is ME” Solo Tour will be a more intimate experience, with just the singer on stage playing her hits, some previous album cuts and a couple of new songs from her soon-to-be-released album titled, “This Is Me.” The tour will make a stop at the Seneca Allegany Casino Events Center on Sunday, June 22 at 5pm as part of Seneca’s Summer Rush Concert Series. The singer played the same venue almost 3 years ago to a standing room only crowd. Earning two Grammys, an Oscar, an American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers (ASCAP) Songwriter of the Year Honor and the ASCAP Founders Award, Etheridge has made her mark as a singer and a songwriter. Speaking with the singer by phone, we talked about the tour, the new album and her health. Etheridge is a survivor of breast cancer and offered insight on her health today and how she has figured it all out. We also lightened the conversation up by talking about the time she got to sing with her idol and the hilarious story of why a “take 2” was needed. The one thing that was very evident during our conversation is that Etheridge is pumped about the tour and even more so about the new album. In her own words: “I’m just saying … here I come!”

..................................

Tickets to Melissa Etheridge’s performance at Seneca Allegany Casino in Salamanca start at $50 and can be purchased through www.senecacasinos.com (click on Seneca Allegany). For more information on Melissa Etheridge, visit www.melissaetheridge.com

guest with the Women of Soul in Performance at the White House. ETHERIDGE: Isn’t that cool?

HULICK: It’s awesome! You shared the stage with the likes of Aretha Franklin,

Patti LaBelle and Jill Scott to name just a few. ETHERIDGE: I was so honored to be on stage with those women and to be considered a Woman of Soul … it just brings me such happiness.

HULICK: You and your family got to meet the Dalai Lama this year as well. It’s

insane Melissa! It’s only coming up on June and look at your year so far! ETHERIDGE: (laughs) I know! Oh Lord! That was really something. To meet someone who practices love and peace every moment … that’s a pretty amazing vibration to be around.

HULICK: When we spoke three years ago you told me about your idol, Bruce Springsteen, and how you got a chance to perform with him and what happened. I did watch the video on YouTube and it is funny. Could you tell our Summer Local readers the story? ETHERIDGE: (laughs) Well I was doing MTV Unplugged and they asked me if I wanted to sing with anyone and I said I really wanted to sing with Bruce Springsteen. I’ll be damned he said yes! It just blew my mind! I was going to sing “Thunder Road” anyways as a tribute to my inspiration [Springsteen]. So we worked on the song and I said, “Let me sing ‘so Mary climb in’ … the last line of the last verse.” I just want to sing that last line. So we got through the whole song and we got to that line and I’m just staring at him thinking, “This is the coolest thing ever” … and I blow my line! I didn’t come in! Now I’m thinking, “Great! I just did that in front of the entire audience.” So we had to do the song again. And if you watch the video on YouTube you’ll see that I just barely come in because I’m staring at him again! He looks at me and backs up and the camera catches him, and when I finally sing the line he bends down and smiles and laughs. You can see him laughing because I almost blew it again! (laughs) HULICK: (laughs) I love that story! Can you describe for me your perfect day? ETHERIDGE: Oh gosh … that is so difficult. I have many different versions of the

perfect day. Let’s see … my perfect day would be spent with my beloved Linda (Wallem), most definitely … and my whole family … it depends on how they are acting that day. (laughs) It would be a day just spending time in my house. I love my house. I’m on the road so much that my idea of a vacation is being in my house. So it would be here at my house with my family doing whatever we like.

HULICK: What’s the best thing about being Melissa Etheridge? ETHERIDGE: (laughs) Wow … another tough one. The best thing about being

Melissa Etheridge is that I don’t have anything to hide.

Ready, Set, Go! Summer is Full Speed Ahead

The fourth of July is well known as the birthday of our nation, and a reason to celebrate, but did you also know that July holds other interesting and fun holidays such as Chocolate Day (July 7th) and National Ice Cream Day (July 20th)? Travel into the Allegheny National Forest Region in northwestern Pennsylvania to celebrate July 4th and to enjoy the seasonal highlights of summer-artisan fairs, picnics, camping, dirt track racing and just plain good old-fashioned family fun! START YOUR ENGINES Dirt track racing is the most common form of auto racing in the United States, beginning before World War I and becoming increasingly popular during the 1920’s and 30’s. The Bradford Speedway, 330 Summit Road in Bradford, Pennsylvania, carries on the excitement and thrill of fast cars with a history of 60 years of racing. The stars of the Bradford Speedway, of course, are the cars and their drivers. It is different here. Here the stars are local athletes, local drivers, with the winners usually coming from the nearby counties of McKean, Warren and Potter in Pennsylvania, and Cattaraugus, Chautauqua and Allegany in New York, with some drivers from New Jersey, Ohio, and as far away as Ontario, Canada. The fun begins when the gates open at 4pm, followed shortly thereafter with the pre-race concert at 4:30pm. Racing start at 6:00pm. Races are held weekly at the Speedway starting in April to the end of the season, commencing with Sizzlin’ Saturday Fall Shows, Oct. 4, 18 and 25, 2014. Two upcoming events not to be missed include the Bradford Speedway Historical Society Weekend June 6-7, and the 42nd Annual Firecracker Weekend June 27-28. Start your summer with racing excitement at the Bradford Speedway

CABELA’S MASTER WALLEYE CIRCUIT IS COMING TO THE ANF REGION

all photos/ANF Visitors Bureau

Bradford’s walleye fishing team of Doug Yohe and Charlie Brant will again be competing on this year’s circuit.

After a day playing outdoors, an evening at the Bradford Speedway allows you to sit back and be entertained. “The Bradford Speedway has great racing, but it also has something for all ages; activities are going on all the time,” explains Jeff Andrulonis, business owner. “It is really a three-ring circus of fun and inexpensive activities for the whole family.” The Bradford Speedway Historical Society Weekend will feature a Friday night D-Day Commemoration with a vintage bi-plane flyover by Bruce Klein, and an 82nd Airborne Division Display. Saturday night will feature a display of vintage racecars traveling in from Pittsburgh. Many sport enthusiasts consider cars from the 50’s and 60’s to be the “Golden Age” of racing. The 42nd Annual Firecracker Weekend is for the hard core speed enthusiast. (This is the weekend for really fast cars!) Friday night will feature the fast track, pro late models - a midseason point championship night. Saturday night will spotlight the Monster Truck Show. The Bradford Speedway is celebrating its 60th Anniversary this year. In 1958, the Bradford Speedway hosted the National Grand Race. Some very famous NASCAR family names raced this track. Lee Petty competed, with races won by Junior Johnson. Some local families have race names that go back through the generations, such as the Layfields. The 60th Annual Season Championship Weekend, Friday and Saturday, August 8-9, will feature Championship Night, FASTRAK pro late models, 4 cylinder Hornets, 6 cylinder Bombers plus the Cook’s Choice Race. Ticket prices are $6.00 for adults, $3 for kids ages 5-15, under age of four is free. An AllAccess Pit Pass is only $20. Admission for special shows may vary; credit cards are accepted. Call the SpeedBourne Bradford Speedway Track Hotline for pricing and group discount information at 814-465-3542 or click over to www.BradfordSpeedway.com.

WALLEYE-BE WARNED For the first time, Cabela’s Master Walleye Circuit Tournament (MWC) series will be held at Willow Bay, in the Allegheny Reservoir, located in the Allegheny National Forest in Pennsylvania. Scheduled for July 11-13, this event is part of the 2014 Master Walleye Circuit taking place in seven states during eight months, concluding with the World Walleye Championship in October. Zippo® Outdoor will be sponsoring the award-winning walleye fishing team from Bradford, Doug Yohe and Charlie Brant. “Zippo supports this team; they are gutsy guys in a sport fishing category known for extreme conditions. This kind of adventurous lifestyle is a great fit for our Outdoor product line,” said Chris Funk, Zippo Outdoor Brand Manager. The team uses a custom-designed Ranger boat featuring Zippo-and-Case themed skin, and travels throughout the U.S. to compete with the other best walleye fishermen in the country. “It will be really exciting to see local anglers out there competing with the national pros,” Yohe said. “We have a beautiful lake and are proud to show it off to the rest of the fishing world.” Nearby, in the city where the Zippo lighter was invented, the Zippo/Case Museum, 1932 Zippo Drive, Bradford, is open daily. Hours are Monday-Saturday from 9:00am-5:00pm, and Sunday 11:00am-4:00pm. The museum features the world’s most extensive public display of Zippo product and Case knives along with fascinating historic displays, a chance to view the repair shop at work, and an extensive gift shop full of Zippo and Case products. Challenge your agility, balance and strength as you encounter Peek’n Peak’s brand new Aerial Adventure Course opening Friday, May 23. This treetop adventure consists of 69 obstacles within eight separate courses of varying difficulties - ranging from the purple course, suitable for ages 5 & up, to the double black diamond course … sure to challenge even the most elite athlete! This 3-hour, self-guided experience allows visitors to explore the course at their own pace and to try any (or all!) of the eight different courses, working their way through the treetops from platform to platform, encountering obstacles along the way. Obstacles include 13 ziplines, tight ropes, ladders, foot bridges, swings, seesaws and other elements to push limits, conquer fears and build self confidence for people of all ages. The course is located in the trees between the Nottingham Notch and Finsbury Field ski slopes, just above the Sugar Shack. The Sugar Shack will serve as the hub for the new Peak Mountain Adventures Park, which will also include Segway Tours, Miniature Golf, Ultimate Bungy trampolines as well as Mountain Ziplines. Each participant is outfitted with a full body harness that connects to an “always-locked” climbing system that keeps the climbing harness securely attached to the safety line at all times. The trails are intentionally designed for self-discovery, so lessons are unnecessary, and Trained Adventure Park staff members monitor the Park and can assist if needed. The Aerial Adventure Course also offers LED lighting, allowing participants to climb into the night! The Peak also has plans for dual Mountain Ziplines. Soar through the air and over the treetops on the Peak’s Mountain Zipline ride. With side-by-side ziplines (allowing you to race a friend), you’ll zip two unique lines totaling more than 2,000 feet of high flying fun! The Mountain Ziplines are set to open mid-summer. Looking for an opportunity to get outdoors and be inspired? Designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright, Graycliff is a world away from the work-a-day world, yet just a scenic 20-minute drive from downtown Buffalo, NY. Enjoy breathtaking views over Lake Erie and stunning architecture set amidst lovely grounds and gardens. The Graycliff Estate was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright between 1926-‘31 for Isabelle R. Martin, wife of industrialist Darwin Martin. The family owned the property until, after the deaths of Isabelle and Darwin Martin, their descendents sold the property (c. 1951) to the Piarist Fathers, an order of Roman Catholic Priests from Hungary, who used Graycliff as their motherhouse. The Fathers altered the property substantially for their own uses, adding additional buildings and structures that obscured Wright’s vision for nearly fifty years. In 1997, with only a handful of elderly priests remaining, they put Graycliff up for sale. Although many people considered purchasing Graycliff, the only offer the Fathers received was from a developer, who wished to tear down the buildings to build condominiums on the prime lake front location. Carol Bronnenkant and her family were among those who looked at the property. Fearing its demise, Bronnenkant called several public meetings to ask the public to save Graycliff. From those meetings, the Graycliff Conservancy was born. Incorporated as a non-profit shortly thereafter, the Conservancy was founded specifically to acquire, preserve, restore and make accessible to the public the Graycliff Estate. A true grass-roots success story, in a little over a decade, the Graycliff Conservancy has acquired the property, completed well over half of all restoration, and created the Pavilion Visitor Center to welcome thousands of visitors annually. SPECIAL TOURS A NYS Landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Graycliff is one of Wright’s most gracious residences. A variety of tours are available throughout the spring, summer and fall months. (Limited winter tours are also available.) The property offers ample free parking and a gift shop. Listed below are just a few of the tours available. For more information, a complete list of tours, tour dates and reservations, visit graycliffestate.org. Basic Tours: A basic tour of the Graycliff Estate lasts one hour, and is led by a trained docent. It includes building exteriors, first floor of the Isabelle R. Martin House, and Graycliff history. Admission is only $16; $10 for students. Twilight Tours: Frank Lloyd Wright imbued his design of Graycliff with what he called “repose”: the simplicity and calm of splendid architecture set amidst verdant acres of grounds on the brim of the lake. Graycliff’s rich history and architectural splendor, set against the serenity of Lake Erie, can be yours for a summer twilight. Listen to the sounds of the water lapping against the shore, the cool breeze rustling the tall old trees, and the birds calling to each. Enjoy a leisurely guided tour, then relax with a glass of wine coupled with a selection of cheeses and summer fruits as the rest of the world fades away into the twilight. Master Architectural Tours - newly revamped! This 2½-hour tour is offered once each month, a behind the scenes tour led by architect Patrick J. Mahoney, an architect with vast knowledge of Wright’s work and great personal charm. Mahoney will discuss Wright’s design of Graycliff, Wright’s relationship to the Martin family, and the ultimate rescue of Graycliff. Discover how Graycliff’s design compares and contrasts with those of other - earlier and later Wright designs. It includes several areas of Graycliff not covered on other tours. All Wright, All Day Tours: See a variety of Wright’s residential, recreational, and monumental designs - both historic and newly-constructed. This all-inclusive tour package begins at historic Forest Lawn, and proceeds by the Forest Lawn trolley to the Martin House Complex for an extended tour. Next stop is a tour of the Filling Station, then on to a delicious lunch at the Fontana Boathouse on the Black Rock Canal. After lunch, the day continues with an extended tour of the Graycliff Estate. The group then returns to Forest Lawn to visit the Blue Sky Mausoleum. A knowledgeable guide will be on-hand to point out architectural treasures along the way, including views of the Walter V. Davidson House and the William R. Heath House, private residences designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Golf Trends 2014

Advancements in Club/Ball Technology & Fashion Trends Top the List Head to Your Local Pro Shop for a Hands-On Experience with the Alpha Gravity Core Driver; Go “LOUD” with Ladies Apparel

By Pat Morgan Some of the most exciting parts about winter ending are the warmer temps (man, this winter was COLD!), the re-emergence of leaves and flowers, that first smell of fresh cut grass, and of course, all the latest and greatest trends and fashions in the world of golf. From advancements in club and ball technology to the hottest (and sometimes head scratching) trends in fashion, your local golf shops in the greater Ellicottville and Northwestern Pennsylvania areas have you covered. We popped in to the Double Black Diamond Golf Shop at Holiday Valley to check out some of the goods, as well as get a feel for how golf courses are improving and dealing with the bitter cold winter we all endured. Generally, the first thing most people look to in a golf shop is the club selection, where one can get hands-on with all the new hard goods on the market. One of the emerging trends lately has been a particular driver that ‘cures’ the swing errors or inefficiencies in even the most seasoned duffer. One popular driver on the market (and on the PGA Tour currently) is the Alpha Gravity Core, part of the Big Bertha line by Callaway Golf. In a nutshell, the adjustable screw and subsequent weight on the sole of the driver offers golfers an ability to adjust vertical center of gravity up or down, which adjusts ball spin and launch angle of your ball. Using technology they have dubbed ‘Adjustable Perimeter Weighting,’ these finely tuned changes affect what golfers call ‘moment of impact,’ therefore dialing in ball flight. Keep in mind, the club is only 1/3 of the equation here … it’s not a miracle worker, so be sure to set up some time with your local PGA Golf Professional to get your swing in order and get the most out of this newly refined technology. In keeping with the theme of clubs, one of the next most popular items for golfers to get hands-on with in their favorite shop is the putter selection. While shapes, sizes and lengths of shafts have varied over the years, much of the focus has shifted to weighting and balance of these integral pieces of your game. With the governing bodies of golf proposing ‘anchored putting’ bans recently, companies have concentrated on this newer design technology … enter the Odyssey ‘Tank,’ a putter that is truly changing the landscape of putting. Instead of merely adding weight to the head of the putter like many companies used to do, Odyssey came up with a concept that allows weights to be added to the top of the shaft. Mind you, the shaft of the tank is longer than average, but not as long as the traditional anchored putters we’ve seen in years previously. Essentially, you can either putt ‘normally,’ or anchor the club gently against your lead forearm for a smooth, yet solid stroke and impact.

If you’re not looking to invest the dollars into a totally new piece of equipment, may we also suggest you check out the new grip technology taking the putter market by storm, produced by Super Stroke. Offering various circumferences of grips, this allows a more comfortable, less strained grip on the club, while helping to take the wrist out of play while on the green. Just remember, like the driver, you actually have to hit the ball with something other than your purse, and not leave it short of the hole … Not in the market for clubs? You’ll likely be dazzled by some of the soft goods you see on the shelves of local shops as well. Brands like Oakley, Puma and Nike are continuing to offer great colors and patterns (and of course footwear advancements along with FootJoy) on the men’s side of things, while on the ladies market, things are getting a little … loud. Introducing Loudmouth Ladies apparel, one of the more colorful looks and styles on the tour right now. Made popular by polarizing golf professional John Daly (I’ll have a double), this brand has now been around for four years, featuring super bright colors, bold patterns, and head turning designs. Designed by their founder, Woody, these outfits are certain to stray from the traditional ‘plain Jane’ look often associated with women’s golf apparel. Rest assured, there are more modest looks to be had if making a statement on the links isn’t necessarily what you’re looking to do. Last but not least, it’s important to note one of the most important trends on local golf courses, which isn’t about improvements, but how hard the courses have fought to survive what was undoubtedly one of the most brutal winters in recent memory. While snow cover is not necessarily a bad thing due to it insulating the turf from cold temps and extreme temperature fluctuations, ice damage is another thing. Due to the ice coverage - or frost line as many call it - persisting for so long this season, all local golf courses are dealing with winter kill and damage on their playing surfaces. The positive to note in all this, is how skilled all of the local Superintendents are, so you’ll be seeing your favorite local links green in no time, with consistent playing surfaces everywhere. Keeping everything we’ve covered in mind, there’s only one thing left to do (if you haven’t already): dust off those clubs, hit the range or your local practice facility, schedule a lesson with your local PGA Golf Professional, or better yet just get out on the course and start working on that handicap. All local courses are now open, with remarkable conditions, improving weather, and leagues and tournaments in play. Enjoy, and swing well! (Flip to pages 30-31 for our annual Golf Course Directory and Map.)

THE POWER OF A TOURNEY

BETTER TOMORROWS ... FOR TODAY’S KIDS The Olean Sports and Social Club’s Charity Golf Scramble • June 8

TURNING TRAGEDY INTO TRIUMPH The Lindsey Joy Pedacchio Memorial Scramble • July 12th

The Olean Sports and Social Club (OSSC) is gearing up to host their 1st annual golf tournament on Sunday, June 8 at Allegheny Hills Golf Course. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the charitable event, which will help support the children of the local community. Two great organizations - The Southern Tier Child Advocacy Center and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation - will both split the proceeds from the tournament, which promises to provide a full day of fun.

By Dash Hegeman

Cost for the 11:00am shotgun tournament is $75 per player and includes 18 holes of golf with cart, a light breakfast, lunch on the course, player gifts, and an awards banquet following play. Plenty of extras will keep the game interesting, including Longest Drive, Closest to the Pin, Team Skins Game, Team Mulligan, $10,000 Hole-in-One, and of course tons of prizes. Bonus events include a $2,500 Putting Challenge, $2,500 Dice Roll at the banquet, a 50/50 Raffle and Birdie Poker. Sponsorships for the event are also available. ABOUT THE BENEFICIARIES The Southern Tier Child Advocacy Center provides a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to cases of child physical and sexual abuse. The organization offers a safe, child-friendly environment for interviews and medical examinations and support to child victims and their non-offending family members. They are committed to reducing trauma, promoting justice and fostering healing. An extension of the Southern Tier Health Care System, STCAC has helped more than one thousand children since it’s opening in 2007. Learn more at www.sthcs. org. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is the world’s leader in the search for a cure for cystic fibrosis. The organization funds more CF research than any other organization in the world, and nearly every CF drug available today was made possible because of Foundation support. They are a non-profit, donor-supported organization with a focus to support the development of new drugs to fight the disease, improve the quality of life for those with CF, and ultimately to find a cure. The Foundation’s drug development success has been recognized by Harvard Business School and by publications such as Forbes, Discover magazine, and The Wall Street Journal. Based in Bethesda, Maryland, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation funds and accredits a national care center network that has been recognized by the National Institutes of Health as a model of care for a chronic disease. It is one of the most efficient organizations of its kind and is an accredited charity of the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance. When the Foundation was established in 1955, children with CF rarely lived long enough to attend elementary school. Due in large part to the Foundation’s aggressive investments in innovative research and comprehensive care, many people with the disease can now expect to live into their 30s, 40s and beyond. In 1989, CF Foundation-supported scientists discovered the defective gene that causes cystic fibrosis - a monumental breakthrough on the road to a cure. The Foundation played an integral role in the development and FDA approval of five therapies that are now part of regular treatment regimens for many with CF. In 2012, the FDA approved the groundbreaking drug Kalydeco™, the first drug to treat the underlying cause of CF in a small group of people with the disease. The Foundation is also supporting research that may eventually treat the root cause of the disease in all people living with CF. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation continues to make progress. Although they are proud of their achievements, there is still much to do. Learn more about the Foundation and how you can get involved, by clicking over to www.cff.org. Or sign up for the OSSC’s golf tournament on June 8 to do your part in helping to raise funds for this very important organization. Those wishing to participate in the OSSC Charity Golf Scramble at Allegheny Hills Golf Course, or businesses interested in providing sponsorship for the event may call 301-643-5824 or email oleanssc@ gmail.com. Allegheny Hills Golf Course is located at 9662 Hardys Corner Road in Cuba, NY.

It is never easy to take a situation where disaster has struck and mold it into something positive. But in the small community of Randolph, NY that is exactly what has taken place after a most unfortunate accident robbed the small community of a bright, young girl in 2004. Lindsey Pedacchio was a 2002 graduate of Randolph Central School. A hard working student and a smooth-shooting forward with a passion for basketball, Pedacchio was on summer vacation, about to enter her junior year at Slippery Rock University where she was majoring in Elementary Education, when a hiking accident at Zoar Valley tragically robbed her of her life, and in doing so deprived her family and the Randolph community of someone with endless potential. “The day that she died, there must have been a hundred people who showed up to our house to offer condolences,” said Bill Pedacchio, Lindsey’s father. “The community really rallied behind us.” Losing a child is not something any parent ever wants to endure. It takes a toll on any family, and with the Pedacchio family it was no different. Bill and his wife Mindy eventually separated. Their son, Tyson, was devastated over the loss of his sister. But despite the heartbreak, trials and tribulations, the family was able to come together and create a way to keep the memory of Lindsey alive. In doing so they also helped to better the Randolph community. Bill, an avid golfer who grew up learning the game at Elkdale Country Club, works at Cardinal Hills Golf Course in Randolph where he was given permission to start an annual golf tournament in Lindsey’s name. Now in its 9th year, the Lindsey Pedacchio Memorial Scramble has helped raise money for the betterment of the Randolph community. Lindsey played golf at Cardinal Hills in the Mike Benca Junior Golf Program. Tyson shared his father’s love of golf and went on to play at St. Bonaventure University. Together, with the help of Mindy, they now run an annual tournament where approximately 25 teams participate each year. As a result, the Pedacchios are able to offer four annual college scholarships of varying denominations to Randolph Central School graduates. The tournament has also allowed the Pedacchios to contribute to various charities in Lindsey’s name. “We would really like to thank everyone who has donated money or prizes to this tournament over the years,” said Bill. “It’s very nice for the greater Randolph community to show such continued support throughout the years, and my ex-wife, my son, his wife Misty and their daughter Joy look forward to continuing this tradition with the support of Cardinal Hills.” The Lindsey Joy Pedacchio Memorial Scramble will take place this summer on Saturday, July 12 at the Cardinal Hills Golf Course. There is a shotgun start at 9:30am and play usually lasts about four and a half hours. Following the fun on the greens, there will be plenty of food, a Chinese auction and an awards banquette at the clubhouse. This year, as they have done in years past, there will be a trip to play golf at Pine Hurst in North Carolina that will be auctioned off. If you are interested in participating in the tournament or if you wish to contribute money or prizes to the tournament, please contact Cardinal Hills at 716-358-5409 and ask for Eric Brown.
