INTRODUCTION
M
arc Newson is undoubtedly Australia’s most successful designer to date and arguably the most influential designer of the 21st century. He has even been included in Time Magazines Most Influential People in the World, and is the recipient of countless awards and achievements including most recently being created CBE by her majesty Queen Elizabeth II.(Marc-newson.com, 2015) This document will touch on Newson as a designer, some of his most recognisable works and documents the iconic Embryo Chair in detail. Using the Embrio Chair, and Newsons design style as inspiration, I have come up with a number of furniture design concepts.

REFLECTION
S
tudying Marc Newson’s incredibly successful career and iconic designs, has been very rewarding. Many of his designs I had already known about but I had never linked them all to the one name. Newson’s design process is inspired by the materials he is using and their perceived limitations. This is something I strongly relate to, in that I am a maker and my designs evolve every time I learn a new skill or discover a new process.
Newson is famous for ‘designing almost everything’. I didn’t and still don’t have any real direction for the future of my design career, but evidently neither did Newson. This is very comforting to me to know, that specialisation in one particular field is not necessarily the only way to success. What I have learnt about Newson will undoubtedly influence my work long into the future, but it has also inspired me to learn as much as possible about other designers, what they have A materials perceived limitation for Newson is not a designed and how they go about their design process. limitation but a challenge. A challenge to sculpt the impossible form, from the most unlikely material. And Newson is as much an artist as he is a designer, sculpting what is often termed as ‘design art’.
