IK & IP Explanation lK lmpact Test Schedule The "IK" code is a coding system that indicates the degree of protection provided by an enclosure against harmful mechanical impacts. It is similar to the IP rating system and consists of the letters IK followed by two digits which indicate the impact resistance. These digits run from "00" (not protected according to the standard) through to "10" which is for an impact energy of 20 Joules. Note: The IK standard also states that where a higher impact strength is required then 50 Joules should be used but there does not appear to be a code for this value. Thus IK10 and 20 Joules are the highest measurements that the IK impact test schedule tests to, however it is our experience, over many years, that this level is not sufficient to guarantee protection against regular or severe vandalism. For this reason we at Designplan test our vandal resistant range well above this, most often to 50 joules, to ensure that the necessary physical strength needed for many installations is designed into our products and then show the uniquely higher rating IK10++. We are thereby able to offer a wide section of our products with a “Lifetime Guarantee” against breakage. No other lighting company is able to offer this comprehensive peace of mind facility (See page 29 for full details).
