The Florida Orange
Logo, Environmental, App Design
Design Challenge
The Florida Orange is a breakfast and brunch restaurant located in historic downtown St. Augustine, Florida. With lots of rustic Florida themed restaurants and businesses in the area playing off old Florida designs, the main challenge was making this restaurant stand out among its competition while still keeping its brand true to southern comfort food and retro Florida designs elements.
Design Solution
The solution to creating a brand identity for The Florida Orange was to make southern service more modern! Rather than taking a rustic approach to it’s brand identity, vintage Florida design elements combined with modern styling make The Florida Orange’s branding stand out from its competition. The restaurant has accents of light washed wood, with the floor and walls are all white. Splashes of orange bring color into the restaurant through wall murals and wall art inspired by retro Florida advertisements and post cards. The Florida Orange has an app for patrons to connect to via QR codes on their table markers so they can request service from their servers without having to wait for them to make rounds back to their table. This eliminates stress from wait staff to check in on tables often since they can be directly notified of their tables needs, as well as make customers happy with quick and convenient service.
1. The Florida Orange has app that allows customers to link their tables to their app
2. The QR codes on customer’s table markers allows them to easily link their table to The Florida Orange’s app
3. Once the table is linked to the app, customers can easily scroll through a list of service options
4. Customers have an option to request table service so busy wait staff are ready with their tables needs when they get back to their table

Avenir Next Typeface Specimen Book
Typography, Book Design, Book Layout
Design Challenge
Avenir Next is one of many typefaces designed by Adrien Frutiger. This projects goal is to design and layout a type book that showcases Frutiger’s Avenir Next typeface in a way that relates to the history of the type.
Design Solution
Frutiger created Avenir Next after being inspired by Paul Renner’s Futura typeface. He didn’t agree with Renner’s approach and wanted to add a more humanistic approach to the sans-serif typeface. Renner created Futura in 1924, an era when the De Stijl art movement was prevalent. Avenir Next was created in 2004. For this typeface specimen book, I wanted to combine the typeface to it’s inspiration. I took a modern and humanistic approach to the colorful and bold De Stiji art style to pay homage to Renner’s Futura typeface, but used a color palette based off Pantone’s colors of the year from 2000-2009 as a nod to the time period Frutiger had created Avenir Next.
