The Hot Springs Village Tennis Association, with nearly 400 members, offers league play at all levels, including mixed leagues, women’s / men’s doubles, and junior tennis. USTA Adult Leagues are encouraged.

The Bocce Ball courts are located across from the Coronado Community Center. The game of skill and con centration, rather than physical stamina, is fun and easy to learn. It is played on a flat surface (similar to a bowling lane) with the object to position game balls as close as possible to the target ball (pallino). All equipment is provided by the Village Bocce Ball Club. SOFTBALL The Senior Softball League is open to men 50 years or older and women 35 years and older. The league plays two sessions each year: Spring (Apr. - Jun.) and Fall (Aug. Nov.). The games are played on Thursday mornings at the Boys & Girls Club’s field off N HWY 7.

LAWN BOWLING The Village Green Bowls Club is active all year. Lawn bowling is a game with moderate exercise. The balls are biased, so they are rolled left to played by two or four players on a badminton-size court, right or right to left, making lawn bowling a challenge. 4

Today, The Shack offers a lot of the original menu mixed with new items. Best known for their classic hamburgers, another fan-favorite is the catfish basket. Their handmixed milk shakes made with real crushed fruit is very popular. Throughout the seasons, special food will be prepared on occasion, like chili or vegetable soup on a cold winter’s day. here was something more to celebrate than just Independence Day on July 4th, 1972. This was the day. The Shack’s grand opening took place. Bill Cockman, a former forest service worker decided in 1972, it was time to change things up a bit and go to work for himself. Since he and his wife, Linda Cockman, owned the land in front of their house, they decided to build a restaurant. This restaurant, The Snack Shack, was open for business for the first time on July 4th, 1972, and the menu offered .50 cent hamburgers and .40 cent hand-mixed shakes along with a variety of other foods such as hot dogs and chicken strip baskets. To this day, Bill and Linda still live behind the original building.

illage Nutrition orig inally began in 1966 as Joy Health Foods in Asbury Park, New Jersey, with David’s father, Mark Cohen. Over the next several decades, there were name changes and location changes. A sense of permanence occurred when David and his wife Cheryl took a trip to Hot Springs Village, Arkansas. They understandably fell in love with the area. They opened a tiny, 500 square foot store, just outside Hot Springs Village in August 2007, and named it Village Nutrition. Needing more space, they moved to a larger location across the street. The store has remained at 3925 N Hwy 7, Suite C ever since, and the Cohens have maintained a loyal following of customers.

hether a customer is looking for a completely new pair of glasses or needs to update their lenses for existing frames, or is looking for a pair of trend-setting sunglasses, Eyecare Specialties can help. They offer name brand frames, such as Coach, Kate Spade, Vera Bradley and the new exciting line from Reese Witherspoon called Draper James. With hundreds of frames to choose from, Eyecare Specialties offers the latest in lens technology from single vision to progressive lenses. Since the Arkansas climate ensures that there is always plenty of sunshine, the Drs. Semmler recommend prescription sunglasses. Why? Because prescription sunglasses are often the best solution for clear, comfortable vision outdoors or when driving on a sunny day. They eliminate glare and the need for squinting in bright conditions, which can reduce vision and cause eyestrain. Patients who currently wear eyeglasses for nearsightedness, farsight edness or astigmatism should strongly consider purchasing a second pair of glasses: prescription sunglasses. The sunglasses lines at Eyecare Specialties include Maui Jim, Ray-Ban, Coach, and Invu. 17

I

t all started when Jessie Slick and his high school best friend went on vacation to Memphis. Jessie became interested in starting his own business after experiencing an axe-throwing bar there. Bringing the idea back home and asking his younger brother, Eddy Slick, to do the finances, they wondered if the company could be profitable in Hot Springs. After doing the math, they decided to give it a try. While working on plans in their parents’ backyard, they selected their father’s original target design for their company. Jessie’s wife, Randi, also decided to get in on the fun. Together, she, Jessie, and Eddie rotate shifts as receptionists. When you walk through the door at Big Axe Battleground, you are greeted by the receptionist, sign a waiver, go through an orientation of throwing protocols, and then you get straight into throwing. On staff is a handful of trained “axperts” as they call them. Axperts that are there to help you practice safety and technique. The axpert is there to assist you for the entirety of your stay, and they can even teach you how to play three different axe-throwing games. Big Axe Battleground in Hot Springs is located in the historic Hamp Williams building at 500 Ouachita Avenue. This axe throwing “bar” is a BYOB facility, and the cost of axe throwing is $22 per hour, per person. One target can accompany groups of 2-10 people at a time, and Big Axe is home to 10 targets. You can reserve your target online at BigAxeBattlegrounds.com. 501-596-8600

Oaklawn Article

aklawn Racing and Gaming announced plans in 2019 to build an expansion project in excess of $100 million that includes the construction of a high-rise hotel, multi-purpose event center, a larger gaming area, and additional on-site parking. The project is one of the largest hospitality investments in the history of Arkansas. “This historic announcement represents a new chapter in the rich 114-year history of Oaklawn,” said Louis Cella, President of Oaklawn Jockey Club. “As we enhance the entertainment experience for our customers, we will also further elevate thoroughbred racing and help make Arkansas and Hot Springs even stronger regional tourism destinations.” The yet-to-be-named hotel will be seven stories with 200 rooms including two presidential suites. Amenities will

include an outdoor swimming pool, a luxury spa, fitness center and restaurant. “The hotel will offer a unique vantage point for our patrons in that it will overlook the track. Imagine the spectacular view as the horses are heading down the stretch,” said Cella. “Our goal is to achieve 4-star status.” Adjacent to the hotel will be a 14,000 square-foot multipurpose events center that will accommodate up to 1,500 people for various events such as concerts, meetings, banquets and weddings. The project also includes the addition of approximately 28,000 square feet of gaming space and a significantly expanded parking. Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson said the Oaklawn expansion will be monumental in the history of Arkansas. Oaklawn.com

Little Italy

I

f you are in the mood for some taste bud tanta lizing food and friendly, efficient service, look no further than Little Italy Pizza, Pasta and Subs. Hot Springs residents regard it as a hidden gem and new patrons who enjoy tasty Italian cuisine quickly understand why this restaurant is becoming more and more popular. Salmon crab cakes, shrimp scampi with veg gies, sausage pepper and onion over penne pasta, veal piccata with veg gies, spaghetti marinara . . . it’s all offered here, and you may find it

tough to just choose one! Check out the pizza—Alfredo Pizza, Meat Lover’s Pizza, Sliced Pepperoni Pizza —there is certainly a pizza to please everyone! Owner, Arian Maksuti, wants potential diners to know the restaurant is family-owned and operated. He proudly says every item on the menu is “fresh and prepared from scratch. Our servings are generous and certainly large enough to take some home. . . . and we pride ourselves on our friendly and accommodating staff.” 228 Cornerstone Blvd., Hot Springs, Arkansas. 501-781-3180

Crystal Ridge Distillery

N

estled deep in the heart of Hot Springs, you will find one of the finest 1920’s original buildings, which is now home to Crystal Ridge Distillery. When revamping the place, the new owners decided to preserve the originality of the building by leaving the 100-year-old brick walls, 1916 fire doors, and rough-cut lumber rafters exposed. Though it is a distillery, where they craft alcohol, Crystal Ridge’s number one priority is to provide a family friendly atmosphere. With their very own restaurant in house, Crystal Ridge Distillery is the perfect place to grab a drink with your friends or go out to dinner with the family. If you’re with your friends, grab a drink at the bar or hangout in the lounge on the couches while watching a ballgame. If you’re with

your family, maybe you would prefer to sit outside on the patio or enjoy regular restaurant style seating. In addition to the restaurant, Crystal Ridge also offers tours of their distillery so that everyone of age can see how they make their inhouse alcohol. While on the tour, you can also enjoy a very interesting story about the history of moonshine in Hot Springs as well as in the United States. If that isn’t enough, Crystal Ridge is also home to a 3500 square foot party room. Perfect for wedding receptions, business meetings, or any gathering, the room also has the vintage rustic look with original 1920’s installations mentioned before. Crystal Ridge Distillery is located at 455 Broadway Street, and is open every day from 10 AM to 10 PM. Other items that garner nods and lots of attention are the grilled chicken sandwich, pulled pork sandwich, and shrimp po-boy. With more than 30 large screen TVs throughout, it is the perfect place to grab the best food in town and watch the big game. Silks is open for lunch and dinner every day. ocated in the heart of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and boasting over 26,000 square feet of conference and meeting space with 304 guest rooms, The Renaissance Dallas at Plano Legacy West is the 15-story hotel opened by Sam Moon Group (of the handbag and accessories empire). His goal was to have the design of the hotel reflect his family's Asian culture while also honoring their second-generation Texas roots.

That goal was certainly achieved in a big way. The "West-meets-Zen" theme can be seen and felt throughout the hotel. Every aspect of design and art, from the menus to the over 60 pieces of art and sculptures throughout the hotel, capture the harmonious marriage of East and West. The cultural fusion is prominent in the hotel's restaurants. Robust Texas flavors combine with Asian fare at the Whiskey Moon Bar, the Texas Tea House in the lobby, and at Oma, the hotel's main restaurant located on the ground floor. John Klukan, Director of Sales and Marketing for the Renaissance adds, “Our hotel is unique. As with all Renaissance Hotels, it is eclectic, and our stunning, yet delicate fusion of two cultures creates a special kind of ambiance and energy. Combine that with signature services and an emphasis on guest entertainment and the experience at our hotel is simply unsurpassed.” Marriott.com/Plano 469 925-1800 36
