id you know? Heifer International is headquartered right here in Little Rock, Arkansas. Visitors can tour the “green” headquarters building, which was transformed from a former abandoned railroad yard into a thriving wetlands habitat. At the same location, Heifer Village offers interactive exhibits that provide stimulating and challenging educational experiences for people of all ages. And not to be missed is the Cafe@Heifer, raved about by Villagers who have been there to enjoy the delicious food prepared with fresh, local ingredients. Want more of Heifer? Head to the 1,200-acre Heifer Ranch in the Ouachita foothills where visitors can partic ipate in hands-on service learning programs, working directly with the farm crews performing the day-to-day tasks necessary on a small-scale agricultural operation. “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” From this ancient Chinese proverb came the philosophy on which Heifer International was founded almost 70 years ago. Serving as an aid worker on the front lines of the Spanish Civil War, Midwestern farmer, Dan West, discovered that the meager single cup of milk rationed to the weary refugees once a day just wasn’t enough to sustain them. And then, the story goes, he had the thought: What, if they had not a cup, but a cow? Today, Heifer International is still working to end world hunger and poverty by “teaching a man to fish.” While

there are many facets to Heifer International’s programs, at the core is providing livestock to families in need around the world and training them to care for the animals. But there is more to the Heifer model . . . by “Passing on the Gift,” families share the training they receive, and pass on the first female offspring of their livestock to another family. This extends the impact of the original gift, allowing a once impoverished family to not only become self-reliant, but become donors and full participants in improving their communities.

of getting older. As the only acupuncturist in the Village, Byrd is seeing the Village Wellness Center flourish. Some patients come to Byrd and his staff as a last resort after they’ve tried everything else for managing their pain. Byrd practices integrative medicine, working with a client’s doctors to resolve their issues. He may provide pain management for migraine headaches or repetitive injuries. Or the best solution could be acupuncture, which Byrd says can relieve problems like back pain, alleviate anxiety, and even cure depression. As Byrd relates, “Do you know why people do acupuncture? Because it works!” Currently, the fastest growing area of the Village Wellness Center is cosmetic acupuncture, which is essentially a face lift without the surgery. Byrd has a growing list of very pleased Villagers who have benefited from his cosmetic acupuncture. Located at 3819B N. Hwy 7, near Fiesta Bowl and Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Village Wellness Center is open 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday. Villagers can call 501-915- 4076 to make an appointment for a consultation or treatment. Premium Custom Homes

BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB IT TAKES A VILLAGE

T

ransforming Saline and North Garland Counties one child at a time! Since January 1, 2016, the Boys and Girls Club of Saline County has been reaching out to youth with a wealth of sports and after-school programs and activities, as well as summer care for local children 6-18 years of age. The tireless staff has made it their mission to enhance and develop the outlook, character, and life-prospects of every child who walks through their door. The Club currently provides a safe and clean environment for 545 young people taking part in the various programs and activities. Before the programs and activities begin each day, everyone spends the first hour doing homework. Then the fun can begin! In addition to the sports programs offered to children 4-13 years old, the Boys and Girls Club also offers programs in technology, art, and science, not to mention teaching life skills such as proper etiquette or how to change the oil in a car. And there are piano lessons, indoor and outdoor recreation, and even “junior staff” that enables the older children to help the younger group. It’s also important to note that the club provides dinner and a snack for each child, as well as sending them home on Friday carrying a backpack with food for the weekend. Susan Clark, the Club’s Director, works closely with Jamie Miller, Athle tic Director, and Jessica Self, Program Director, to achieve the mission of

6

the Boys and Girls Club with the over riding goal of transforming the outlook, character, and prospects of the communities they serve. Ms. Clark is quick to point out that the community itself plays a significant role in the success of the Boys and Girls Club. Many Hot Springs Village clubs serve as solid resources and strong supporters of the Club. The HSV Woodworkers Club teaches basic woodworking skills, and the Happy Hookers teach basic knitting skills – all part of the enrichment activities for the children. Other local groups have built a chicken coop, created a vegetable garden that provides food for the Club as well as for the children’s families, provided “book boxes” that enable children to “take a book/leave a book” whenever they come to the Club. As Ms. Clark suggests, “It takes a village to raise a child and the community certainly plays its part with enthusiasm. Thanks to the support of the local Optimists, the Club has the only Junior Optimist Alpha Club in the state of Arkansas. The Community Foundation and local churches do their part, as do the local schools and families in the community.” When asked for her wish list for the Boys and Girls Club, Ms. Clark had one ready – a sponsor for each program (STEM, arts, cheerleading, music, and the game room, and more). If you or your organization would be interested in sponsoring a program and making a difference for the children in our

community, contact Susan Clark, Club Director, 501-984-6996, susan@ scbgclub.com, and visit their website at www.scbgclub.com.

W

hat a pleasure it is to see the bril足 liant red flash of a Northern Cardinal, a pop足 ular resident of Hot Springs Village. Pairs mate for life and stay together year-round so bird watchers can follow them from one season to Photo by Vic Prislipsky the next. Male cardinals are bright red with a black mask, while females are pale brown with warm reddish tinges and a dark face. Both have a distinctive crest and thick, strong beak, perfect for cracking open seeds. Northern Cardinals forage on or near the ground. The males aggressively defend their territory by chasing off other male intruders. They sometimes see their own reflection in a window as a threat, which accounts for the pecking behavior.

During courtship the male often collects food and brings it to the female as a bonding behavior. The female builds a nest in dense shrubs or thick brush, and lays 3 to 4 eggs, remaining in the nest for 11 to 13 days. During this period the male will feed the female. Once hatched, both male and female will feed the young for the next 9 to 11 days until they fledge, or leave the nest. To attract these song足 birds, keep your feeders stocked with sunflower seeds, and of足fer plenty of fresh water. To learn more about the birds of Hot Springs Village contact HSV Audubon President, Norma Wall, 214-212-6770 or go to hsvbirds.org.

Glazy Peau: Set among woods and rolling hills, Glazy Peau is home to Lake Pineda as well as miles of fitness trails. tep into YaYa’s and you will immediately see that the atmosphere is one of sophistication. There are mosaic tile floors, stone columns, and fabric covered wall panels. Plus, heavy beamed ceilings, hand blown chandeliers, and curvy wrought-iron railings decorate the restaurant. The menu, inspired by a combination of American, French, Italian, and Greek cuisines is very eclectic. If you do not find something that excites your taste buds, you may just not be hungry! Active Living in Hot Springs Village MOTORCYCLE CLUB: There’s something about the roar of a motorcycle that makes us all think about the freedom of the road and the wind in our faces. In Hot Springs Village there are about 370 motorcycle enthusiasts, and a good number of them be long to the Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA), a 50,000-member national organization headquartered in Phoenix, AZ. The HSV chapter even has its own designation – Chapter E-AR, with 124 members. As you might guess, the HSV group loves to ride! Any excuse to jump on their bikes two to three times a week is a good one. They often ride somewhere in the state just for lunch– Eureka Springs, Twin Peaks, or other Arkansas destinations to the north, south, east or west. There are local and state rallies at various times and one international rally each year for Gold Wing Road Riders. For more information or to become a member, contact dhewett@yahoo.com, 501-655-6290, or visit the national organization’s website, gwrra.org. RAZORBACK CLUB: The Hot Springs Village Razorback Club supports all men’s and women’s Razorback athletics. That support includes attending some of the sporting events and also participating in fund-raising activities on behalf of the U of A Razorback Foundation’s athletic scholarship program. While the majority of the approximately 300 members are actual Razorback alumni, a number of them are also non-alumni newcomers to the Village who join the Club for the fun and camaraderie. For more information, contact the Club president, Wayne Dyer at wayne.dyer1944@ yahoo.com. “We are very proud of the HSV Razorback Club. We get a lot of support from Arkansans who reside in the Village and residents from other states who soon learn to “call the Hogs.” – Observed Wayne Dyer, president VILLAGE CHORALE: Although some adult activities, such as playing cards, are losing their popularity, community choruses are going strong. In fact, across the country their numbers are growing. No wonder! Singing is part of a lifestyle of active participation. Forget passivity! That’s what members of the Hot Springs Village Chorale would tell you. This 23-year-old group began modestly with extremely high aspirations for musical performance which have been met and exceeded. The 40-member, auditiononly chorus is composed of experienced musicians. The Chorale is the singing group for the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra when it presents its yearly Christmas in the Village concert. It also has been invited to perform a free concert during the Christmas season at Garvan Woodland Gardens. For more information, contact the director, Dr. Tom Bolton at (502) 889-1520 or Marlene Zenker at (501) 922-2009. 20
