MINI Scooter EConcept By: Devon Tate

conic British brand MINI unveiled its exciting MINI Scooter E Concept in London. This new design
study represents the MINI design team’s unparalleled expertise in recognizing the challenges for mobility in major urban areas, and meeting these challenges with the development of stylish, innovative and sustainable future-focused vehicle concepts. The MINI Scooter E Concept comes almost ten years to the day since the new MINI was first shown at the Paris Motor Show. There are a total of three interpretations of the MINI Scooter E Concept conceived by Adrian van Hooydonk,
Senior Vice President BMW Group Design: two of which will be shown at the Paris Motor Show next week, while the third concept, inspired by the swinging sixties, the heyday of classic Mini is being shown exclusively in London. The MINI Scooter E Concept is driven by a built-in rear wheel electric motor which is powered by a compact lithium-ion battery. The battery can be plugged into any standard AC power outlet. A display screen clearly indicates to the driver the amount of battery life available: the MINI Scooter E Concept can be charged via a retractable lead in the rear of the Scooter.

rom bicycles to motorbikes, French luxury brand Hermès has worked together with Japanese motorsports company, Yamaha, to recreate the VMax 1700 bike. Leather lovers would appreciate the fine skills gone into producing this refined interpretation of the bike – featuring a deep brown leather seat, headlight cover, exhaust silencers, grips and mirrors against a chrome frame along with other details.
With its four-cylinder engine and brushed metalwork, Yamaha didn’t have to do much to the VMax to make us want it any more than we already do. The result of collaboration between Yamaha and Hermès was unveiled at a motorcycle exposition in Germany; it’s not the first time the two powerhouses have collaborated, Hermès having similarly decked out a Virago cruiser back some fifteen years ago. This is beyond awesome for us extreme bike lovers!

Mazzo Restaurant a m s t e r d a m By: Concrete Architectural Associates
M
azzo, the eight member of the IQ creative family in Amsterdam, is the Italian sister of Brasserie Witteveen – both in hospitality concept and in the interior there is an obvious connection. As
with Witteveen the name and location of Mazzo share a history in the city of Amsterdam. Until six years ago Mazzo was a famous and notorious disco in the monumental building on the Rozengracht. It’s a typical Amsterdam building: narrow and very deep spaces fused together with different floor and ceiling levels, which automatically provides a natural positioning for the restaurant. The first part, situated on the Rozengracht, has a five-meter high ceiling and faces directed outwards. This is the perfect area for a bar where guests can order a fast espresso or have a drink at the

high bar tables. Lighting from the Bestlite series by GUBI creates the intimacy in this space. The wall lights above the nine-meter chesterfield couch and the suspension lights above the bar and bar tables in L and XL sizes create a living room ambiance. The second part is obviously lower but twice as wide. A few original stone columns divide this part into two zones. The darkest part of the entire building is perfect to house the kitchen. The seating area of the restaurant is opposite to the kitchen with a simple but flexible, trattoria-like table arrangement. A variation of tables for two or eight are placed and every table has a great view of the chefs in the kitchen. Five Dear Ingo lights by MOOOI comfortably light up the seating area. Independent of the table arrangement, these modern chandeliers give a pleasant and intimate light. Four portraits of people in different age categories provide an Italian-family feeling of which the guests can be a part during dinner. For a real family dinner or a business meeting guests can use the boardroom. A cozy room with a TV screen and fireplace, next to the kitchen, that can be closed off if privacy is preferred. The third part is orientated towards Bloemstraat. A narrowing in the building creates the small backroom where kids can play during the day under the watch of their parents. At night the toys can disappear in the cabinet behind a black-and-white blocked curtain and guests can retreat into the eleven-meter long chesterfield couch to enjoy a good glass of wine and have a nice conversation. Again the Bestlite wall lights by GUBI create a home-like feeling. The diversity of the fused spaces and the natural restaurant layout need a connecting element: a huge wooden cupboard across the whole restaurant linking all the spaces to each other and organizing them at the same time. The cupboard, created out of solid pine wood for storage and display of the products, becomes the stairs to the mezzanine floor, the back bar, point of distribution for the food, the transparent division between the boardroom and restaurant, the wardrobe, the access to the restrooms and the storage for the kids toys. Five materials determine the ambiance of the raw and honest interior design: power floated concrete, chipped brickwork, stone, pinewood and raw steel. The first three materials are part of the shell of the building; all the new materials are steel and wood. The window frames in the cupboard and the mezzanine floor in the front of the restaurant are completely made of raw steel. The steel beams and columns are exposed and the extra floor is provided with an untreated expanded metal mesh. The use of honest and simple materials doesn’t distract the guests’ eye and underlines the fact that the restaurant focuses on the food. Embracing the past of the building and the name Mazzo, it has a logo that is a controversial part of the venue. The five letters are made of raw steel and filled with classic amusement lights, referring to the disco days of Mazzo. The light object crowns above the bar and will be noticed even in a flash by the cars and cyclists passing by.

ow does a dedicated young actress, hailed by the likes of Jane Fonda, Tina Fey, and Meryl Streep, become a tabloid plaything and then a celebrity jailbird, mocked even by her fellow inmates? Interviewing Lindsay Lohan, we learn about her frenemyand-coke-strewn road to self-destruction, the obstacles to a comeback, and the controversial biopic the 24-year-old star is passionately hoping to make. A week before Lindsay Lohan went to jail, she met me in the rooftop party room of her apartment building in West Hollywood. The space was empty except for a couple of beige couches, a coffee table, and Lindsay’s can of Red Bull. The sun was shining brightly down on a giant billboard in the streets below: GOT A DUI? 310-I-GOT-DUI. A few days earlier, Lindsay had been sentenced to 90 days in
to jail. Her altercation with a waitress days before we met had made headlines; the prospect of her incarceration had created media frenzy. Even President Obama, being quizzed by the ladies on The View a week after Lindsay started her jail term, on July 20, admitted he was aware of her predicament. “I don’t care what anyone says,” she told me, when we started talking about how her troubles had become a subject of such lurid fascination. “I know that I’m a damn good actress, and it’s been my passion since I was a child, and I know that when I care about something I put 100 percent and more into it. And I know that in my past I was young and irresponsible—but that’s what growing up is. You learn from your mistakes.
I don’t care what anyone says the Lynwood correctional facility, to be followed by 90 days in rehab, for violating the terms of her probation for two D.U.I.’s to which she had pleaded no contest in 2007. The jail time had come as a shock to her. “I was just thrown,” she said in her distinctive, sexy-smoky voice, a voice that could belong only to Lindsay Lohan, American actress and international tabloid obsession. “I was under the assumption that it was going to be a progressreport-type hearing,” she said. “I had no idea that it was going to be anything like a trial.” But somehow everyone else did; for weeks before her July 6 hearing, speculation was running high that Lindsay was going to be sent
“And I’m not getting any younger,” she said, flashing her luminous, wide-set green eyes. She had turned 24 on July 2. “I want my career back,” she said. “I want the respect that I had when I was doing great movies. And if that takes not going out to a club at night, then so be it. It’s not fun anyway. I don’t care. It’s the same thing every time.” The question everyone was asking, though, was whether it was too late for Lindsay. Unfortunately, Lindsay’s misadventures in and out of Hollywood have by now all but overshadowed her film work and her talent, which in the past have gained her noted champions like Meryl Streep and Jane Fonda. After working with her on Robert Altman’s A Prairie Home CompanSpring/Summer 2011

“That’s not true,” Lindsay told me. “I just did Machete
Lindsay told me she has been working with a “spiritual healer.” She’s been to Morocco and India to visit children in need. But even that backfired on her, when the Indian government took umbrage at her working on a BBC3 documentary about child labor and the sex trafficking of women without having obtained the proper visa. Lindsay also seemed to claim to have been part of a raid on an Indian sweatshop using child laborers, although she wasn’t in the country when the raid occurred. “Over 40 children saved so far,” she tweeted. “Doing THIS is a life worth living!!!”
and everything was fine.” But that was before she got sent to jail. I’d talked to Lindsay and to a lot of people about Lindsay—none of whom would agree to let me quote them by name. “She’s Hollywood kryptonite right now,” said a movie publicist. “No one wants their name mentioned in the same breath as hers.” But I still didn’t feel like I really got to know Lindsay. I felt like the reporter at the 36

And before you judge, think about how we all fuck up.” “I would like to believe it’s never too late at any age to turn your life around,” said another one of her friends. “She needs to remind herself of why she does what she loves to do, which is be an entertainer, and not lose track of that.” “I just think you can’t go backwards,” Lindsay told me, “you can only go forward, and you can take pieces from the past that will help you move forward.” She was showing me her tattoos. She read me the one on her left forearm that’s a paraphrased quote from Marilyn Monroe: “Stars, all we ask for is our right to twinkle.” Then she got up, because it was time to go. As she fixed her ponytail, one of her blond hair extensions flew off. Lindsay picked it up, embarrassed. “I’m literally falling apart,” she said. Early in the morning of August 2, Lindsay was released from jail, after having served 13 days of her 90-day sentence; she was let out early due to overcrowding, according to L.A. sheriff’s department spokesman Steve Whitmore. Jail “was difficult in the beginning but ... she did surprisingly well,” said her lawyer Shawn Chapman Holley. “She made friends with the people housed

And thanks to the photography expertise of the Panasonic LUMIX family, who has been supplying the world with digital photography wonders from point and shoot to beyond, making a camera that is also a phone (note, this is quite different from a phone that is also a camera) absolutely conceivable. It comes with a 3.3 inch touch screen display, and also features Panasonic’s Mobile VenusEngine which is a picture processing chip that improves color production. CASIO G-SHOCK What it lacks in volume, the latest product portfolio from Casio G-Shock makes up in desirability, especially the collaborations with retailers ALIFE and DGK. As stand along edition, the GX-56 themselves warrant much attention already since the new model is the “toughest and largest” watch G-Shock ever produced. Behind the oversize display face, Casio engineers poured in new resins and added more vibration absorbing properties thus making the watch almost indestructible. With skate label Dirty Ghetto Kids in the fray, the motto “toughest and largest” takes on a whole new meaning. For those looking at something less ostentatious, you still have models GW-2310BD and AWG-100BC, subtle in aesthetics yet fully functional as with any other G-Shock. The Casio G-Shock new releases will be arriving at G-Shock dealers near you in the coming.

New music Toxic Tox Born in Cleveland Tennessee and raised in Chicago, IL, Toks always had a passion for music. Because this passion was often deterred by her strict upbringing, she focused on building a career outside of music. She completed a pre-dental medicine degree at Western Illinois University and later matriculated with an MBA at Keller Graduate School of Management. She built a career around sales and management yet after successfully conquering the corporate world, she felt she needed more and what was missing was her first love, music. Her passion was reignited in July 2009 at a Femi Kuti concert in Chicago Illinois. Watching his performance and his embrace of his culture inspired her to reconnect with her Nigerian heritage through music. She later collaborated with Moe and Reezon on their hit Rock Your Body. Through Moe’s gift of song-writing, she was able to broaden her writing abilities and completed her first hit single from the album Toxic Tox, Ice-T. From there other great singles such as Allegiance (Green White Green), Tease Me, Lose My Mind, Mila for your Holla and V.I.P arose. The right people have been placed in her life at the right time. She is finally walking into her destiny; her ambition, persistence and zeal to live out her dream will take her nowhere else but the top.
Bruno Mars Amidst the somewhat twisty, turvy transition from hit vocal accompanist to shining in one’s lone starred spotlight, Hawaiian native, Bruno Mars has indeed presumably risen to the challenge. Okay, so maybe minus the whole cocaine possession thing that just went down in Las Vegas. Anyhow, back to the musical aspects. With his name being spotted on several Billboard Hot 100 tracks, the soulful swooner is now looking to set himself apart from the rest of your everyday hook, go to artists of the month. His debut album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans has been released, and luckily for the multi-talented musician, momentum is gaining fast. The new single just so happens to include a musical legend in his own right, Damian Marley, who is fresh off his hit project with esteemed emcee, Nas. Mars is purely one of the pristine discovered talents with his outstanding performance at the 2011 Grammy Awards ceremony, and 7 nominations still being applauded by critics internationally. Let’s hope his career continue to skyrocket as he truly is a brilliant musician. 52

ECO CHIC HOME LIVING Photography: Cristobal Palma
Project: Hunsett Mill Extension Designer: Acme Architects Location: Norfolk Broads, UK Website: www.acme.ac An extension to a 19th century Mill Keepers House in the Broads; The House is adjacent to the well-known historic Grade 2 listed Hunsett Mill. The house was the residence for the Keeper of the Mill until 1900, when Electricity made wind powered pumps redundant. In order for the new extension to retreat behind the listed setting of the Mill, the new additions to the house is designed as shadows of the existing house. The extension is made entirely from laminated wood, which is exposed in the interior and clad in charred cedar boards externally. Ground source heat pumps, passive solar heating and independent water well supply will make the house almost self-sufficient. Hunsett Mill has won an RIBA Award and been shortlisted for the Stirling Prize, Stephen Lawrence Prize and Manser Medal. 58
