The idea is to make the structure balance between a coherent minimalist spatial art installation - drawing on inspiration from works of artists and architects such as Donald Judd, Richard Serra and Peter Eisenman, combined with classic architectural elements from the village - the main street, the alley, the square, the tower, the city wall. each house in this village - twelve in total - is built with a completely matt monochrome exterior like an architectural model landscape in 1:1 revealing each house very differen tiated interior with its own function and purpose. One house is built with light wood inside resembling a minimalist Japanese pavillon. Another would be all color inside inspired more by Luis Barragan or Carlo Scarpa, creating a completely different universe for displaying the &tradition products. Some of our houses will be created in collaboration with our favorite partners continuously redecorated and rearranged to inspire our clients to see and choose materials for their furniture and boutiques. You’ll spot Paper Island with its many low warehouses if you stand on the terrace of the contemporary glass and brick theatre that houses the Royal Danish Playhouse, in the heart of Copenhagen. Despite its close proximity to the centre of town, for decades the island was off-limits to the public as this was where the Procurement Association of the Danish Press stored its paper, hence the island’s name.

8

9

In 2012, the last of the paper stock was moved and the warehouses abandoned and one of central Copenhagen’s last industrial areas fell into the hands of developers, turning it into a vibrant district with space for cultural initiatives and creative businesses, cafés and restaurants, and now, &tradition’s first showroom. But it’s the contemporary intervention by Danish firm, Norm Architects, that makes this such a unique warehouse conversion. In place of walls and partitions, Norm Architects has designed a miniature village made up of 12 abstract buildings with a high street running through the middle.

EMBLEMATIC OF AN ERA

“Flower Power” was the slogan for the peace and love movement championed by a generation who questioned authority and the es tablishment, eager to embrace counter culture ideals. At the same time, there was an intense focus on the race into outer space, where designers where put to the task of designing a utopic future. Enter Verner Panton. A playful, provocative and prolific architect and designer keen on challenging the status quo. Boldly breaking away from the strict design dictates of Bauhaus, with its starkness, severity and straight lines, Panton was a pioneer pursuing more fluid forms. Sculptural shapes, vibrant colours, mesmerising patterns and immersive surroundings. Fascinated by the potential of plastic - a novel, controversial material at the time, Panton experimented extensively with forms previously impossible with other materials. This led to the development of his eponymous Panton “S” chair, the first one-piece, injection-moulded

plastic chair in the world. A sleek design with no discernible legs, it earned him accolades as a daring visionary, with the chair appearing in one of the most famous futuristic films ever. Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece “2001: A Space Odyssey”. Panton’s creative quest for innovation went beyond singular objects. He explored the impact of design on entire environments. Drawing on his insights as an architect, Panton developed living spaces fusing floors, furniture, walls and ceilings into immersive ambient experien ces. Featuring textiles in geometric Op Art patterns. Psychedelic colours. Unconventional curvaceous seating configurations. Lamps as decorative accents on the walls and ceilings. Including the FlowerPots - in an array of explosive, vibrant tones. The impact was impressive. Panton went on to design similar such interiors saturated with colours, shapes and patterns for the Astoria Hotel in Trondheim, the Spiegel Publishing House headquarters in Hamburg and the Circus Building in Copenhagen, amongst others. Culminating with his Fantasy Landscape Room exhi bited at Visiona 2 for the Cologne Furniture Fair in 1970. The enticing new colours launched by &tradition will carry the legacy of the FlowerPot lamps into a con temporary arena where its iconic appeal is timeless. Honouring a man whose ground-breaking body of work continues to resonate with a new generation. Far beyond the power of the flower … F LOW E R P OT V P 1

Two semi-circular spheres in vivid colours formed the basis of a series of lamps that epitomised an entire era. The FlowerPot Lamps. They became an endearing icon of the 60s conceived by one of the most avant-garde designers from Denmark’s stable of Modernism masters - Verner Panton. Regarded as an enfant terrible, Panton took a drama tic departure from his contempo raries to create a riveting design idiom still seen as radical to this day.

Verner Panton remains one of the most radical Danish designers of all time, given his avant-garde approach to fluid shapes previously impossible, along with his palette of vivid colours and striking geometric patterns. Panton’s penchant for playful provocation took him beyond designing furniture, lighting, textiles, posters and rugs to creating entire environments akin to visually immersive experiences. Earning him admiration the world over for his conviction to continuously question convention.

The FlowerPot Lamps became synonymous with the Flower Power movement from the late 60s. Reflecting a break from convention to embrace a more open, modern mentality that promoted peace and harmony. Such was the mindset of their designer, Verner Panton. One of the most forward-thinking talents of his time. The lamp’s simple design consisting of two semi-circle spheres facing each other is not only an icon of that era, the FlowerPot Lamps remain equally as appealing to new generations. Especially in the new series of colours launched by &tradition. Panton passionately pursued a vibrant palette of colours. Well aware of the emotional effect colours can have on the human psyche, he drew on a rainbow of hues to group certain colours together. Based on his belief that choosing colours should be a conscious decision because “you sit better on a colour that you like.” For &tradition Brand Manager Martin Kornbek Hansen, “Panton was always on the cutting edge of design. He fearlessly experimented with new shapes, colours and materials in design concepts that looked futuristic then – and now. To honour this design visionary, we are introducing a series of high gloss hues. New colours to keep the lamps one step ahead. Like Panton himself.” Watch for an enticing selection of tones that are at once contemporary yet timeless, and in sync with the rest of &tradition’s collection. All the more luscious in lacquered metal featuring white, black blue, deep red, grey beige and polished brass, amongst others. The colour schemes vary between the FlowerPot Pendant Lamp VP1, the larger Pendant Lamp VP2 and the FlowerPot Table Lamp VP3.

12

13

Excellent as singular decorative accents or grouped together in clusters, the FlowerPot will enhance any space with its innate charm. Whether you grew up with the peace and love movement or simply read about it in retrospect, Panton’s vision went beyond any culture or time constraints. Seen in this stunning example of how curves and colours can create an enduring sense of elegance.

Even before the Pop Art Movement gained momentum, Verner Panton was leagues ahead of his contemporaries with visionary designs that continue to be compelling. The Topan Pendant Lamp, with its simple spherical silhouette, remains as captivating today as it was when ini tially introduced in 1959. To be launched in a series of contemporary colours that resonate with new generation of design aficionados. The Topan lamp was originally designed for Norway’s Astoria Hotel and Restaurant in Trondheim. Here Panton created a stunning, colour satu rated universe where the Topan lamp served as more than merely a source of illumination. The lamp became an integral part of the decorative elements that comprised Panton’s immersive approach to designing entire interiors. For Panton, choosing colours should be “a conscious decision. Colours have a meaning and a function.” As a tribute to this master who knew the deeper meaning of colour and its emotional impact, &tradition is propelling the Topan into the future with a series of modern colours. “Panton was passionate about colour and even went so far as to say that colour was more important than form,” explains &tradition Brand Manager Martin Kornbek Hansen. “The Topan Pendant Lamp was Panton’s first mass-produced lamp and the predecessor to his subsequent series of FlowerPot lamps. So we are proud to keep Panton’s iconic designs alive with new hues that appeal to a global audience. In fresh tones that also match the rest of our collection.”

20

21

Look for glossy versions of white, black blue, deep red, grey beige and dark green, which are all the more alluring in Topan’s lacquered alumi nium. Current colours such as matt white will remain only available while stocks last. Wherever you place the Topan Pendant, the global shape will emit a gorgeous glow adding a cosy factor to any environment. Choosing from an array of new hues to create a singular lighting solution or a decorative statement in clusters.

Spanish artist / designer Jaime Hayon brings a suspended sense of ani mation to a new series of desks which partner two different shapes together in a mix of materials. The result is a freeze frame of motion in a double-level design reminiscent of Alexander Calder’s kinetic sculptures. “Calder transformed a 2D object into an enthralling 3D kinetic experi ence,” says Hayon. “At first his mobiles appear flat, until the slightest breeze rushes in, breathing life into these simple geometric shapes. When I first saw them I was almost mesmerised. My Palette Desk is an homage to this supremely simple concept of poetry in motion. As I see it, a desk is where we’re supposed to sit still and make decisions. And yet, it’s also where we find distractions. For the Palette Desk, I merged two different sized shapes in contrasting materials to hopefully bring a cohesive sense of order out of chaos.” An elongated bean shape and a small round shape are the two different elements appearing in various colours and materials which converge together to create a brilliant balancing act, secured by a metal armature. For the table tops look for an elegant choice between two marbles, either honed Bianco Carrara or Nero Marquina. Adding earthiness is the option of stained ash veneer in red, dark grey, grey-green or black. Or satin polished brass. Adding a contemporary touch is powder coated steel tubes as the base. It’s this contrast from coupling diverse colours and materials that creates cohesion.

26

27

For Martin Kornbek Hansen, founder of &tradition, “Hayon adds a Spanish accent to our Scandinavian sensibility. With the Palette Desk, he creates a new design lingo by fusing different shapes and materials into a hybrid that’s harmonious and holistic.”

Just like the name implies, the Passepartout Lamps by Spanish artist / designer Jaime Hayon act almost like a frame that enhances the visual appeal of whatever they’re illuminating. At home in any type of architectural setting, they’re sensational lamps as decorative additions to any décor, available in three different finishes, where each one is a distinctive shape. How do you add a lamp to illuminate a space – without the lamp being too anonymous or too imposing? It’s a question Hayon has often asked himself. “The answer came from the picture frame. The picture is the focus and the frame is there to guide your eyes to it. Of course, with a lamp you have light, without it you have darkness. So the lamp is actually the unsung hero that brings any setting to life.” Place the Passepartout Lamps on the wall or ceiling, in the living room or corridor and they’ll never look out of place. Choose from three diffe rent shapes and finishes: satin polished brass, polished aluminium or matt white. With the Passepartout lamps, you can even cluster the various colours and shapes together to create a unique aesthetic effect. As for the illumination factor, it’s nothing less than fantastic. The Passepartout Lamps use built-in LED technology that ensures an energyefficient, high quality light emission. What’s more, they’ve been custom designed to provide illumination that’s soft and soothing, emitting a light that’s dispersed uniformly throughout the space.

All The Way To Paris is a Copenhagen- based graphic design studio founded in 2004 by Petra Olsson Gendt and Tanja Vibe. Since 2004, ATWTP has grown into an international team of eight designers, creating award-winning solutions for a broad spectrum of visual communications including rugs, fabrics and design objects.

Inspired by the vast, heather-covered hills in the countryside of their native Scandinavia, the Moor rugs by All The Way To Paris capture the ambience of the landscape. “This collection of rugs focuses on texture, shape and depth of colour – not patterns,” explain founders and Partners Tanja Vibe and Petra Olsson Gendt. “Our intention with the rugs is to gather a room together both emotionally and aesthetically. To create a feeling of closeness and to somehow ‘ground’ the room.” Seen from above when you arrange the rugs all together, the sense of scale disappears and the effect is a subtle glistening cluster of gemstones. A striking fusion of classic geometric gemstone cuts expressed with graphic simplicity. In keeping with the moor theme, enjoy an array of rich colours symbolising the sky, rays of sun and the natural surroundings across the landscape. Starting with a golden hue, beige for the drops of dew, grey moss and red for heather, as well as dark grey coal and midnight blue. All with a very slight touch of shimmer.

40

41

For an extra velvety feeling, ATWTP used a special hand-woven technique found in hand-loomed rugs from the Middle and Far East. “In doing so, ATWTP have brought the past back to the present,” adds founder of &tradition Martin Kornbek Hansen. “It’s one of the cornerstones of our collections at &tradition. We draw on classic craftsmanship to create contemporary products using high quality materials. ATWTP has also brought their penchant for graphic purity to this new series of rugs that both unify and enhance a room.”

A LAMP WITH A LEGACY

Back in 1929, Arne Jacobsen and Flemming Lassen’s “House of the Future” was an early indication of his forward thinking vision. A round house built with a helicopter landing pad on the roof and a garage door that opened automatically (unheard of in those days). There were built-in typewriters, a convey or tube for receiving mail and a kitchen replete with ready-made meals. Including an antenna on the roof to collect electricity to be transferred wirelessly. A concept inconceivable at the time. This brought Jacobsen recognition as a name worth knowing, and the chance to design a seaside resort in Klampenborg north of Copenhagen.

BELLEVUE AJ2

Thus began Jacobsen’s numerous projects for Bellevue. Starting with the Bellevue Beach, where he designed everything from the blue-striped lifeguard towers to the changing room cabins and even the staff uniforms. A trait he subsequently became known for, reflecting the Gesamtkunstwerk aesthetic theory. That art should be an all-encompassing endeavour,

designing everything from the stairs to the spoons. The Bellevue Theatre went on to become another cherished icon of design. Inaugurated in 1936, the building boasts a unique detail. It’s one of the only buildings of its kind in the world where the roof retracts, so that summer performance can be experienced outside – while sitting inside. Jacobsen wanted the ocean and the nearby forest to become part of the theatre-going experience. His next project is the one many experts view as a functionalist masterpiece. The Bellevue Petrol Station. Affectionately called “The Mushroom,” Jacobsen designed the top to be elliptical and illuminated from below. The result is an intri guing oval silhouette, designed to be seen in the dark. At the time, Jacobsen’s designs for Bellevue were seen as “the dream of the modern lifestyle”. So it should come as no surprise that his beautiful Bellevue Lamp is akin to a souvenir from that eventful era. The Bellevue Beach is still there. So is the theatre and the petrol station. They have a fascinating past. And the Bellevue Lamp has a future that lives on ...

46

47

With its swan neck and slim, curvaceous silhouette, the Bellevue Lamp personifies the signature style of its famous designer - Arne Jacobsen. A man considered one of the most influential Danish architects and designers of the 20th century, who was instrumental in putting Denmark on the Modernism map. In fact, his Bellevue projects served as a pivotal point in his career and the launch pads for his subsequent success.

BELLEVUE AJ3

Arne Jacobsen is one of the most influential Danish architects of the 20th century, defined by his pure, fluid lines and streamlined designs. Highlights from his countless architectural achievements include designing the SAS Royal Hotel Copenhagen and Danmarks National bank, as well as numerous other lamps, furniture, textiles, wallpaper and silverware. Jacobsen’s designs can be found in museums, galleries and private collections around the world.

The Bellevue Lamp is one of the signature pieces from Danish design master, Arne Jacobsen. Slim, statuesque and imbued with a timeless simplicity, the Bellevue Lamp was Jacobsen’s first foray into lighting concepts, mirroring the tubular steel seen in modernist designs that emerged during the Bauhaus era. As a tribute to Jacobsen, the Bellevue Lamp revisits its roots – with a new production in its original shapes: the floor, table and wall versions. It’s all about authenticity, honest materials and the design in its most iconic version. Known for its sleek silhouette and graceful swan neck, the 45-degree cut shade went on to become a prominent element in Jacobsen’s subsequent designs. “Jacobsen’s Bellevue Lamp reflects the true tenants of form follows function,” explains founder of &tradition Martin Kornbek Hansen. “It captures the essence of elegance, with nothing to add and nothing to take away. My passion for this lamp led to this re-launch of these three versions in their original shapes. Even the swan neck is back in brass, as it was when initially introduced. As design purists at &tradition, it’s our way of honouring this pioneer of Danish Modernism.” While the look harkens back to 1929 when Jacobsen designed the lamp, it now comes in five more modern hues with a material mix. Such as satin polished brass, or a choice of mixing brass with ivory, black, grey beige or anthracite. Compelling combinations to keep Jacobsen’s design legacy alive in contemporary homes for decades to come.

48

49

Boasting the ability to direct the light without excessive glare, the Bellevue Lamp is ideal for brightening up a dark corner of a room, as a reading lamp or office lamp. What’s more, it bears the name “Bellevue”, which marks one of Jacobsen’s earliest architectural accomplishments, encompassing the Bellevue Theatre and Bellevue Petrol Station. Both remain icons till this day.
