EDUCATION Every child is unique and possesses their own intellectual idiosyncrasies. They all learn differently, develop differently, and interact differently. Consequently, a one size fits all solution to a child’s education constrains their ability to fully realize the individual gifts with which they have been given. Private education allows parents to shop around for the best school that suits their child’s abilities and interests. For example, many private schools offer entrepreneurial programs, international programs, sports or clubs not typically offered at public schools, amongst other notable advantages. Why settle for whatever school is in your district when there are so many others that could give your child the unique opportunity to utilize their individual gifts, and pursue their individual passions? Parents take great care when shopping for a home, car, or even non-essential items such as clothing or utilities. It only makes sense that with something as potentially life altering as the education a child receives should demand the same amount of customization.

Academic programs are a fundamental part of the education a child will receive and to that end, what makes each program effective will vary on the individual child. For a child that is interested in business, entrepreneurial programs give them a chance to enjoy learning valuable skills that generalized approach could not. In contrast, children interested in science programs, which allow them to learn through experimentation and research, provide a much more efficient way to learn than if their institution embraced a one size fits all approach to subjects and programs. It is essential to understand that nothing can suppress the will of a child to learn more significantly than forcing them to learn in a way not conducive to their natural personality or interest. It may be that your child is not so incapable of understanding the material as it seems, but rather they feel like a fish out of water in the bureaucratic public system.

The smaller class sizes typically offered at private institutions also provide a significant advantage in terms of a child’s ability to process information, while blocking out distractions from other students in the 12 l PRIVATE SCHOOL GUIDE / 2016

class. More to it, smaller class sizes will provide the child with specialized attention from the instructor, which will in turn give them a more significant chance of processing and retaining the information desired. In large classes offered at public institutions, children become distracted and are unable to develop that personal connection with both their instructor, as well as the material itself. Parents are also able to speak more often with the instructor about the material and values being taught at their child’s institution, which gives them greater autonomy and peace of mind over the educational process.

Values - Another aspect of education that is often overlooked includes the values of the school delivering such education. Children are like sponges, and soak up information at a remarkable rate. On a typical day, a child spends more time at school than they do with their parents. That is a shocking fact most don’t pause to consider when determining which institution is best for their child. All too often, parents become worried when their child comes home from school expressing views or using language they would never have anticipated. It is essential to question to the highest degree what exactly is that particular child going to be learning, and who exactly are they going to be learning it from on a day to day basis. For many, the emotional cost parents often suffer when their children are taught values inconsistent with their own, far outweighs the financial cost of customized education. Safety - Of all the reasons to consider private education, there is perhaps none more pertinent than safety. If a child doesn’t feel safe in the environment they’re attempting to learn in, they will never be able to fully concentrate on their studies. Bullying is an epidemic that psychologists are only now beginning to uncover the true emotional cost of. So heartbreaking it is for a child to have to suffer emotional or physical damage on a daily basis, simply because of the school district in which they reside. Drug use is also a particularly relevant factor to consider, given how life altering its effects are. Synthetic heroin has become a rampant issue for teenagers in the past decade, leading to tragic death and incalculable heartache for families. Investigating more thoroughly the environment in which a child will be receiving their education becomes all the more critical as a consequence of these truths. Of all the things we customize in our everyday lives, school choice is all too often over looked. With an issue as paramount to success in life as education, this is regrettable. Privatized education provides both parents and students with the tools and options they deserve to ensure success at the highest level. n

sues of child and adolescent development in the United States and abroad. The New York Times opinion columnist David Brooks calls Dr. Sax’s first book Why Gender Matters, “a lucid guide to male and female brain differences.” He has been featured on the Today Show, CNN, NPR, PBS, FOX News and the BBC among many other national and international media outlets. Dr. Sax spent the morning of Wednesday September 7 meeting with Roig Academy students, parents, faculty and staff. He spoke to students about the advantages and disadvantages social media and video games have on developing children. Dr. Sax also met with parents, teachers, faculty and staff to discuss how gender impacts learning and how boys learn differently than girls. Additionally, he provided advice to parents on being mindful to raise children as children, not as adults.

Leonard Sax is an American psychologist and a practicing family physician. He is best known as the author of three books for parents: Boys Adrift, Girls on the Edge, and Why Gender Matters. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1980 with a bachelor’s degree in biology. He completed the combined M.D.-Ph.D. program at the University of Pennsylvania in 1986. His Ph.D. is in psychology. In 1990, he founded a practice in Maryland. More than a decade later, Dr. Sax began an extended sabbatical from medical practice. In 2013, he returned to full time clinical practice. Dr. Sax currently resides in Chester County, Pennsylvania with his family.

It is essential to understand that every child is given their own unique abilities, interests, and personality. Consequently, a one size fits all solution to their educational needs is setting them up for failure. When students with a particular special need are not given the proper resources or environment in which to address these needs, they become frustrated, self-blaming, and in some circumstances angry as a result. This is not the child’s fault. Every child must be seen for the uniquely gifted and invaluable student that they are. You wouldn’t go to a general practitioner to root out a cardiac issue, one would take the more prudent approach of seeing a specialist. The same analogy applies with respect to education. There are some schools that are specifically called special education schools. Center Academy in Coral Springs specializes in providing a secure, inspired setting for students with learning differences. Center Academy is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, accepts McKay Scholarships, and provides a college prep environment for students with different learning styles.

Scheck Hillel Community School in Miami offers Nativ which is South Florida’s first full-day program dedicated exclusively to children with dyslexia and related learning differences at

a Jewish day school. The Hebrew word for path, Nativ is designed to remediate learning challenges in the elementary grades. Nativ includes all aspects of Scheck Hillel’s curriculum including reading, language arts, math, science, social studies, Judaic Studies and Hebrew. Access School in Davie, is an innovative school with a specialty program called Arrowsmith, a program that retrains the brain, to make learning possible. Arrowsmith Program, is a program of cognitive suites meant to reprogram the brain, enabling students to overcome the stumbling blocks of whatever learning disabilities they may be experiencing. There are numerous other worthy special education schools and the ones mentioned in this article are only a few of many excellent options. The overarching concept to be taken away from this analysis is that children with special needs deserve to have special schools to meet those needs. These children are no less worthy of the best education than the next child. By giving them the customized intellectual experience, they can be better able to utilize their strengths in a way that leads them to a happier, more successful life. n

Offers a Solution for Students with Learning Challenges

Access School is an innovative school with a specialty program called Arrowsmith, a program that retrains the brain, to make learning possible. The Martin family knew the public school system was not meeting their son’s needs. John-Robert ‘s cognitive shortcomings were so severe that he was failing to make the connections essential to succeed academically. More troubling was that there were no programs at school that offered the kind of help he needed....except for Access School. At 11, his vocabulary wasn’t what it needed to be; he had to count using his fingers or objects, and he had extreme difficulty remembering instructions and information. “We were getting worried and didn’t know where to turn,” said Debora Martin. And not only were John-Robert’s learning disabilities affecting him in school, they were also isolating him at home and in social situations. Conversations with his parents and sisters were rare. Frustration was the norm. Then the Martin family happened to read an article about Access School. Access School uses the innovative and highly successful Arrowsmith Program, a program of cognitive suites meant to reprogram the brain, enabling students to overcome the stumbling blocks of whatever learning disabilities they may be experiencing. AccessSchool Director Claude LeFrancois says there are 19 learning disabilities, and most people normally suffer from one or two disabilities. But the students who attend his school – as is the case with John-Robert – have as many as eight or nine and with different severities. By identifying the cognitive weak spots and then retraining a student’s brain, kids are finally able to learn. It’s that simple. 38 l PRIVATE SCHOOL GUIDE / 2016

Six months into attending Access School, and Debora Martin says the worry is gone – replaced by the certainty that her son will not only attend a mainstream high school, but that he will also do well. “It’s been unbelievable,” she said. “He’s starting to remember steps, school work. He wants to help more around the house. He’s having conversations. He wants to know things.” LeFrancois says this kind of result is the norm for students who enter the Access School program. “It’s not a Band-Aid,” he states. “This is a true solution. Kids can leave here and attend regular programming and we are not passing the problem to the next grade. We are fixing the problem and the root cause.” This type of program is like training an athlete. Everyone has the potential to develop weaknesses into strengths. Taking cognitive weaknesses and retraining the brain to make those areas strong again, allows students to retain to feel confident as they become amazingly functional when it comes to recalling and using information. Access School is really about how students process learning. The aim is to ensure that when the student returns to a mainstream school, he or she can absorb and retain permanently what is being taught. After just a few months of this brain training, students begin to see results and after participating in the program for two or three years, students can finally enjoy school without the extra duress. Access School is an intimate setting, with customized programming based on the principle of neuroplasticity, and where 30 or 35 students work with expert educators to rewire the brain, in order to make learning easier and to change lives. Canadian educator, Barbara Arrowsmith-Young, who after years of her own frustration in the classroom, found a way to correct her learning disabilities, and created the Arrowsmith Program more than three decades ago. Barbara had severe auditory and visual memory issues as she struggled to understand concepts and meaning. Today her program is in 4 different countries.
