PROJECT OVERVIEW and MISSION STATEMENT BURN: An Energy Journal It is the fundamental issue of our time: Energy; where we get it; how we use it; what happens then. It powers our homes and our economy; it creates both alliances and disturbing divisions; it enables almost all that we do, and looms large over all that we have become.
Energy is the fundamental issue of our time The Peabody-award winning SoundVision Productions presents BURN: An Energy Journal, a broadcast and digital project hosted by one of public radio’s most trusted journalists and master storytellers, Alex Chadwick. Alex will explore our energy future through the intimate stories of visionaries of research, maverick inventors, industry insiders and concerned citizens. These personal stories will help explain how and why we face an energy crisis, the dilemma of the continuing demand for energy, the realities and consequences of a mostly carbon-based industry and infrastructure, and some possible alternatives to what looks increasingly to be an ever more challenging energy and climate future in the coming decades. BURN will follow the quest for Energy answers and the stirring public initiative required to transition to this new energy world.
Explore our energy future through intimate stories

BURN: AN ENERGY JOURNAL with Alex Chadwick Presented by SoundVision Productions As a country and a world, we face the prospect of revolutionary energy changes. Scientists and economists tell us to move quickly, but the choices are bewildering and complex. How can we imagine an energy future? Which innovations will make a world of difference? And how can people begin changing something so fundamental to our lives as energy.
The choices are bewildering and complex
TARGET AUDIENCE The audience for this project is engaged and informed — yet daunted by the enormity of the topic: an energy market worth trillions of dollars and a blur of complex technological advances. With all the news coverage of gas prices, energy security and global warming, many of us are simply overwhelmed by the baffling scope of energy and climate issues. We don’t know where the energy in our own homes comes from — let alone understand enough to participate in the national conversation. People feel ill prepared to do little more than adjust a thermostat or recycle their trash.
Many of us are simply overwhelmed by energy and climate issues
Our journey will begin with journalist Alex Chadwick, one of public radio’s most respected voices, sharing human-scale stories to explain and explore the very serious challenges that face communities across this country and around the world. We’ll meet scientists and engineers, policy makers and ethicists, concerned parents and committed young people. A beloved program host and correspondent, Alex has been a generalist for his 30-year career. But his reporting is now focused on Energy, and his audience (both old friends and new listeners) is invited to join his quest. This will make for a compelling and accessible introduction to the project.
KEY ELEMENTS The BURN public radio series will consist of four one-hour public radio specials in its initial season, and a series of feature-length stories for the system’s top national programs such as Marketplace, All Things Considered, and The World. The one-hour specials will be nationally distributed in two parts: Spring and Fall, culminating with an election special in October 2012. BURN is also exploring a weeklong collaboration in the fall of 2012 among a half-dozen of public radio’s top national programs that would jointly focus on energy topics to elevate the national conversation about the search for an Energy solution.
National programs that elevate the national conversation Digital and social media will provide tools for accessing an audience exponentially larger than traditional public radio listeners. We will facilitate dialogue among hundreds of Energy-concerned communities that already exist online, in universities, workplaces, religious groups and households. Blogs and tweets will keep the stories fresh, and a digital campfire will provide a forum for sharing ideas, experiences and best practices. Our information-rich website will provide a home for aggregated and original reporting, lively debate and explanations of what it all means.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: BURN SPECIAL #1 Particles: Nuclear Power After Fukushima A one-year anniversary special examining the future of nuclear power after the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi plant in Japan. Some scientists believe the accident was a significant setback for nuclear in the U.S. But climate concerns are a factor — 70% of carbon-free energy comes from nuclear power, with more than 60 nuclear reactors under construction worldwide. What have we learned from Japan…and now what?
Behind-the-scenes during the early hours and days postFukushima Among many stories, Alex Chadwick conducts an interview with a deputy director of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission about behind-the-scenes goings on during the early hours and days post-Fukushima — and next steps for nuclear plants in the United States. And Chadwick will profile Greg Hardy, a Los Angeles-based engineer who has spent much of his career examining the vulnerability of nuclear plants to earthquakes. Hardy says he’s comfortable living between two nuclear facilities along California’s coast, even after Fukushima. But Hardy's wife is skeptical. The show also travels to Japan, where postFukushima, Japanese mothers’ concerns about radiation contaminated food have turned them into activists fighting for the future health of their children. And in Germany, where the government plans to shut down its nuclear reactors by 2022, BURN will visit the site of a controversial radioactive waste disposal facility and a future deep final repository for nuclear waste.
First-ever interview: on site at the Daiichi nuclear plant when the earthquake and tsunami struck
Finally, Alex Chadwick conducts a first-time ever interview with an American technical worker, on site at the Daiichi nuclear plant when the earthquake and tsunami struck. Carl Pillitteri was one of 40 Americans in Fukushima, a maintenance supervisor on the floor of one of the turbine buildings, enormous structures that house the gigantic turbines that produce energy. He and his crew endured a terrifying ordeal, partly in total darkness when the lighting failed. He remains traumatized by the event to this day. Throughout the show, Alex will provide a clear explanation of how nuclear energy works, why this is such a difficult technology to develop and manage, and what new nuclear tech is on the horizon.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: BURN SPECIAL #2 The Hunt for Oil: Risks and Rewards An Earth Day special that coincides with the two-year anniversary of the April 20 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the worst in U.S. History. Host Alex Chadwick travels to the Gulf Coast to talk with fishermen and ecologists, oil chemists, and community activists to gauge how the local community is recovering after the ecological and economic insult. Where did the oil go? Researchers at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and at the Center for Land, Environment, & Natural Resources at UC Irvine help us answer this. They address the use of chemical dispersants and other cleanup methods, and the biological mediation of the threat by petroleum-eating bacteria.
Alex talks with fishermen and ecologists, oil chemists and community activists Meantime, there are some 3,400 offshore production facilities in the Gulf of Mexico. Alongside them -- 27,000 abandoned oil wells. The American Petroleum Institute sets the
5
total number of abandoned wells in the United States at 2.5 million. Many of these wells are neglected and leaky, posing risks to the environment. What should be done with all these abandoned wells? The setting: Los Angeles. There are hundreds of abandoned oil wells there, in a place called Baldwin Hills. There are also 1,100 acres of active oil drilling and production in Baldwin Hills. Last year, residents reached a legal settlement with the city that included reduced drilling of new wells, increased air quality monitoring, more stringent noise limits, and mandatory, recurring health and environmental justice assessments.
Where did the oil go? And what should be done with all these abandoned wells? Throughout the hour, host Alex Chadwick explores the question of “peak oil and where we are on the supply / demand curve today. The issue has occupied the minds of many over the last decade, but the extraction of petroleum from shale and deepwater wells has muted the concern in some circles. As we contemplate the continued use of fossil hydrocarbons, how should we be thinking about future energy needs? And what might come after oil? BURN will also tell the story of a very rich oil field that lay overlooked for decades in central Utah, and was then essentially given away by Chevron. It has produced about a billion dollars of high-grade oil since its discovery eight years ago. Alex reports on the technology that makes this oil a worthwhile business pursuit, and the gamble prospecting poses for the people in the oil business.
Alex reports on the technology and the gamble that prospecting poses ‌
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: BURN SPECIAL #3 Energy Efficiency: Taking It to the Streets A one-hour special for the fall of 2012 dedicated to the promise of energy efficiency. Energy Secretary Steven Chu says "Energy efficiency isn't just low hanging fruit; it's fruit laying on the ground." Beyond petroleum, coal, nuclear and alternative energy, many believe efficiency is the “fifth fuel,” a huge, untapped resource. But is consumption really the problem? Should technology lead the way? How do we educate the consumer with an infinite appetite to consume energy? And is there a need for an “energy ethic” where callously wasting energy should be seen as “uncool?”
Is efficiency the “fifth fuel”? PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: BURN SPECIAL #4 An Energized Presidency The culminating hour of BURN would be an Election Special for broadcast in October of 2012. While we struggle with how we will create the conditions for an adequate energy supply, how are we defining public policy to address the problem? Should we have a comprehensive national energy policy rather than a patchwork of laws and regulations? BURN will explore how our energy public policies are being defined by the 2012 presidential candidates and elsewhere around the globe (including a few country-specific case studies).
How are we defining public policy to address the problem?

Since its inception, SoundVision has been dedicated to bringing compelling stories to public radio listeners. As it moves into its second decade, SoundVision explores new ways to inform the public through interactive Web offerings, hands-on training workshops, community outreach programs, and partnerships with ethnic and alternative press.
