PASSIVE AND ACTIVE ROOFING SYSTEM • • • •
FLAT-PLATE COLLECTOR AND SOLAR PANELS ARE BUILT ON A CENTER PITCHED ROOF, SO IT WOULD RECEIVE SOLAR ENERGY FROM THE SOUTHERN SUN. CARPORT ROOF SHIELDS THE USERS’ VEHICLES FROM DIRECT SUNLIGHT, RAIN AND SNOW. OVERHANG ROOF PROVIDES PASSIVE HEATING DURING THE WINTER AND COOLING DURING THE SUMMER. A PITCHED ROOF, ABOVE THE CENTRAL HALL, WILL BE INSTALLED BETWEEN TWO 8’ X 40’ SHIPPING CONTAINERS. THIS IS ONE OF THE COST EFFECTIVE METHODS TO OPEN UP THE CENTRAL SPACE FOR THIS HOUSE.
GLASS DOORS, CLERESTORY AND CASEMENT WINDOWS •
DOUBLE-PANE, FIBERGLASS AND LOW-E GLASS WINDOWS CAN REDUCE UP TO 50% IN HEAT LOSS PREVENTING UNWANTED SOLAR GAIN OR GLARES WHILE PROVIDING VENTILATION AND CONSISTENT DAYLIGHT THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
DIRECTED PUMPED SOLAR SYSTEM • •
THIS COLLECTOR PUMPS WATER TO A STORAGE TANK IN A MECHANICAL ROOM AND MEETS HOUSEHOLD HOT-WATER NEEDS FOR SIDE-BY-SIDE WASHER AND DRYER, AND THE SPACE BETWEEN THE BATHROOM AND KITCHEN. GRID-TIED PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEM WITHOUT OPTIONAL BATTERY BACKUP WOULD SELL UNUSED ENERGY BACK TO LOCAL UTILITY, IN RETURN FOR CREDITS OR A REDUCTION IN ENERGY BILLING.
FUNCTION FOLLOWS FORM • • •
FUNCTIONAL SPACES ARE ESSENTIAL FOR USERS’ COMFORT WITH OPEN KITCHEN AND LIVING ROOM IN A TINY HOME. BEDROOM AND BATHROOM WALLS PROVIDE LOAD-BEARING WALL FOR ROOF STRUCTURE. SOCIAL SPACES NEAR THE ENTRY DECK AND SIDE DECK ARE ACCESSIBLE FOR GATHERING. BEDROOMS ARE POSITIONED FOR PRIVACY AT THE BACK OF THE HOUSE. KITCHEN, BATHROOM AND WASHER/DRYER ARE POSITIONED NEAR EACH OTHER TO REDUCE PLUMBING COSTS.
FLOORING AND RAILINGS •
STEP-LESS ENTRIES WITH RAILINGS PROVIDE ACCESSIBILITY THROUGH THE STREET FRONT LOCATED AT ENTRANCE AND BACK OF THE HOUSE NEAR THE DETACHED CARPORT.
PIER FOUNDATIONS •
FOUNDATION PIERS WOULD LIFT THE TWO SHIPPING CONTAINERS BY CONNECTING THEM TO THE DECK ON THE NORTHERN SIDE.
GARDEN ON THE SITE •
RAIN GARDEN REDUCES RAINWATER POLLUTANT.
05 | SU UNLIGHT CUBE
UNDERGRA ADUATE STUDIO II / INSTRUCTOR M. BANASIAK
THE SUNLIGHTT CUBE IS A CONCEPTUAL MODEL, BASED ON A POTENTIAL PERIPHERAL EXPERIENCE THROUGHOUT THE TWO-STORY BATHHOUSE. THE GROUND FLOOR PLAN INCLUDES THEE MAIN ENTRANCE AND CHANGING ROOMS IN THE LOCKER ROOM FOR EACH GENDER. UPON EXITING THE CHANGING ROOMS, SPA CLIENTS WALK DOWN THE UNIVERSAL RAMP ALONG THE DIRECT SUNLIT CORRIDOR WITH WINDOWS OF A VARIETY SIZES AND SHAPES TO TH HE BATH SPA AND RELAXATION SPACES IN THE LOWER LEVEL. ON THE LOWER LEVEL PLAN, THERE IS AN EMERGENCY EXIT AT THE END OF UNIVERSAL RAMP THAT MEETS THE REQUIREM MENT FOR TWO MEANS OF EGRESS. THE BATH SPA WOULD BE POWERED WITH COST-EFFECTIIVE AND ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY ENERGY FROM A GEOTHERMAL SYSTEM.

07 | URBAN FARM
UNDEERGRADUATE STUDIO I / INSTRUCTOR JADE POLIZZI
LOCATION: 15TH STREET & BASELINE, BOULDER, CO
SEVERA AL BOULDER SCHOOLS ARE ALREADY INTERESTED IN TEACHING K-12 STUDENTS ABOUTT URBAN FARMING. THEY COULD BE TRAINED TO SHARE THE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ASSOCIATED WITH COMMUNITY GARDENS. THE PROJECT’S ENCLOSED SPACE, SURROUNDED BY BUSHES AND PLANTS WITH TWO MEANS OF EGRESS THROUGH THE GA ATES, WILL PROVIDE A SECURE AREA FOR CHILDREN. THE AGRICULTURAL BARN, LOCATED BETWEEN THE ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL’S CROPS, WILL ALLOW CHILD-ANIMAL -ANIMAL INTERACTION. DEPENDING ON THE SIZE AND WEIGHT, ONE COW CAN CONSUME 50 TO 100 POUNDS OF GRASS PER DAY. SEVEN GRASS-FEEDING ROTATION
AREASS PRE PR VENT GRASSS FROM DYING OFF BY KEEPING COWS IN EACH FENCED AREA A FOR TWO TO THREE EEE DA D YSS BEFORE BEING MOVED TO FRESH, PESTICIDE AND CHEMICAL-FFREE GRASS. THIS ENSURES THAT THE COLORADO NATIVE GRASSES ARE FULLY GROWN IN NA MONTHLY PERIOD IN THIS TYPICAL WESTERN DRY CLIMATE. THE MANURE FERTILIZER FROM THESE GRASS-FED GRAZING COWS WILL PROVIDE THE BOULDER COMMUNITY Y WITH AN ULTRA FULL-FLAVOR, NUTRIENT-ENRICHED CROP WHILE SAVING “OUT-OF-TOWN N” SHIPPING COST AND FUEL EMISSIONS.

08 | SENSORY HOUSE DESIGN
UNDERGRADUATE STUDIO IV / PROFESSOR JULEE HERDT
LOCATION: 775 UNION AVENUE, BOULDER, CO
SENSORY HOUSE DESIGN IS A 1,200 SF SINGLE-STORY HOUSE FOR DEAF RESIDENTS. SENSORY STIMULATION WITH ALL SENSES, ARCHITECTURAL PROGRAMMING, COURTYARD, ACCESSIBILITY, AND USE OF THE SUSTAINABLE DESIGN METHODS ENGAGE THE PURPOSE OF WELL-BEING AT HOME. THE HEARING AND TOUCH SENSES ARE USED AS DESIGN INITIATORS FOR DECISIONMAKING IN TERMS OF THE AESTHETICS, STRUCTURAL DETAILS, MATERIALS, PROGRAMMING, ROOM POSITIONING AND NATURAL LIGHTING APPLICATIONS. THE
INITIAL PROGRAMMING LAYOUT WAS PROPOSED FOR DEAF CLIENT WITH A FULL VISUAL ACCESS THROUGHOUT IN ALL DIRECTIONS AND THROUGH ALL SPATIAL PLANES, SUCH AS THE HOUSE’S OVERALL U-SHAPED PROGRAM WITH A SOUTH-FACING COURTYARD SURROUNDED BY ENCLOSED SPACES TO SEE ALL MOVEMENT AND ACTIVITY INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE RESIDENCE. THE INTERIOR SPACES AND ADJACENT COURTYARD FLOW TOGETHER IN AN EXTROVERTED, COMMUNICATIVE MANNER WITH MOVABLE NANAWALLS AND DUAL ACCESS. THE OPPOSING, ENCLOSING PERIMETER WALLS OF THE HOUSE WERE DESIGNED FOR SECURITY, CONTROL AND REDUCED SENSORY DISTRACTION.
DEAF FOUNDATION “TACTILE” QUALITIES ENHANCE “SIGHT” QUALITIES WITH STRUCTURAL CONNECTIONS AND PROVIDE SLIGHT VIBRATIONAL READINGS. SEISMIC FOUNDATION SYSTEM PRECEDENTS WERE STUDIED SO THAT VIBRATIONAL FREQUENCIES ARE TRANSLATED INSIDE THROUGH THE HOME’S DOOR. THE ENTRY’S DOOR AREA WAS ALSO DEVELOPED ON A “DEAF FOUNDATION” SYSTEM. THIS “TACTILE, FREQUENCY FLOOR” CONNECTED TO THE INTERIOR SPACES ALLOWED EVER-SO-SLIGHT VIBRATIONAL READINGS, IN LIEU OF THE TRADITIONAL TONAL DOORBELL, TO SHOW A VISITOR’S APPORACH.
