1.
THE WOMAN BEHIND THE BUSINESS Sit down with Nancy Fire-Breslau as she tells you about her story and how she founded Design Works International How did you get started in your industry? After college I worked at BBDO Worldwide Advertising Agency in the photography department that was affiliated with RC Communications, a subsidiary of BBDO. I left SUNY Oswego with a BFA degree and needed to get a job asap to start to pay off my college loans. I had a successful interview and was offered the job for the 11pm-7am shift. How did you get your first promotion? I actually left BBDO/RC Communications after a few years to pursue a more designcentric position at a fashion/home design studio in the West Village of NYC. Here is where I received my first promotion literally overnight, by doubling my salary. At this point I was living in NYC in my own apartment, had a few years of corporate design under my belt and would not receive a big enough raise by staying at my current job. I seized the moment, made more money, took on more responsibility, traveled the world and became the president of a new division of this design studio, I was 26 years old and had 25 people reporting to me!
2.
How was Design Works created? Design Works International was created 30 years ago when I realized the company I was working for was moving in a direction that I was not a fan of. Originally, I was tempted to take another job in our industry, but my husband Neil felt I should open up my own business. I was a bit skeptical because as an artist and designer, I was nervous to have this major responsibility in owning my own gig! Having a great reputation in our industry really helped jump start our business and Neil joined me as a full time partner a year after we established Design Works International. He was (and still is) business savvy and would take risks that helped me feel more confident in our decision! What advice would you give a young, upwardly mobile, career-minded women? Passion….Passion…Passion…LOVE what you do and you will never work a day in your life! Make smart choices, offer awesome ideas and be kind! It goes along way in the working world. Design Works International is celebrating its 30th year and most of our business comes from referrals. I truly love what I do by traveling the world and offering awesome ideas to my clients!
Tell us more about how Design Works has grown over 30 years? This October will be our 30th year in business. Knowing this, I have had a chance to reflect on our many years in industry! We started as a surface design studio creating prints and patterns for many local fashion companies. We hired 3 designers and a sales person and started by creating repeats, color ways in wovens, and prints along with the occasional mood board. Over the years, we expanded our business by representing major brands in the U.S.A, creating our own home & fashion collections, and eventually starting Creative Corporate.* My team and I work with many brand based companies creating product lines as well as giving them trend and color direction! I speak at many industry shows on the newness and excitement in our industry and travel constantly both overseas and in the states to find new inspiration.
NEIL BRESLAU
As co-founder and President of Design Works International, what has been the most impactful part of your role? The best part of my role at Design Works and Design 2 Print has been seeing Nancy bring her talent and passion to our clients and seeing the impact that it makes with our clients. Asking the right questions has played a big role at Design Works and Design 2Print. Without the right questions, we would not have the impact that our clients need and want. I always say that even though the world is “High Tech” you still need a “Soft Touch.” We hold our clients hands from start to finish, while providing quality and creativity. That is how we have survived and grown for the past 30 years.
