Nella terza sala si trovano rari pezzi di antiquariato e preziosi reperti archeologici che testimoniano tutti i doni che l’olivo e l’olio hanno saputo dare all’uomo: legno, luce, calore, unguento, condimento, alimento, lubriﬁcante, medicamento e cosmetico.

Ponente, una delle aree tradizionalmente più apprezzate per la produzione oleicola, nasce nel 1992 il Museo dell’Olivo.

La quarta sala narra il lungo viaggio dell’olivo, attraverso i secoli e le più grandi civiltà antiche, dalle coste orientali del Mediterraneo ﬁno alle colonne d’Ercole grazie a relitti, anfore, vasetti, mosaici, pitture e immagini antiche. L’itinerario passa per la Fenicia, la Mesopotamia, l’Egitto e raggiunge inﬁne la Spagna (nell’ottava sala). Particolare rilievo viene dato, nella sesta sala, alla storia dell’olivo in Grecia. L’olivo, creato dalla Dea Atena, era il simbolo della città ed era ritenuto dai cittadini un albero sacro che veniva addirittura protetto dagli ateniesi con apposite leggi.

he Château de Bellet has perpetuated wine-growing traditions for four centuries. Ghislain de Charnacé, the present owner, is the grandson of the Baron de Bellet. The castle is one of the last remaining examples of Nice’s architecture.

Ghislain de Charnacé est un vrai vigneron, il cultive 8 hectares de vignes et a vinifié en 2004 son 35ème millésime. Son professionnalisme et son talent de vinificateur son reconnus par tous les grands sommeliers en particulier sur la Côte d’Azur . La réputation des vins du Château de Bellet est telle qu’ils furent servis pour illustrer la grandeur des vins français au Sommet de Versailles en 1982, à la table des chefs d’Etat et de Gouvernement au Sommet de Nice en décembre 2000, et à celle du sommet de l’OTAN en février 2005 à Nice. Les vignes de Bellet sont exposées au couchant. L’altitude du vignoble à 250m et sa situation dominant la vallée du Var, font bénéficier les vignes de la double influence de la brise marine et des vents frais des préalpes du sud.

Ghislain de Charnacé, who is a real wine grower, cultivates 8 acres of vineyards and produced his 35th vintage in 2004. His professionalism and his talent are recognized by all the best wine waiters, especially on the French Riviera. The reputation of Château de Bellet wines is so strong that it was served at the Summit of Versailles in 1982, at the heads of state’s table at the Nice Summit in December 2000, and at the NATO Summit in February 2005 in Nice, to represent renowned French wines.

The ﬁrst section illustrates the history of the olive tree, dating back 7,000 years, through precious evidences of important periods in the olive and man civilisations.

Sono stati necessari oltre cinque anni per catalogare tutti i pezzi, elaborare i contenuti e studiare le soluzioni espositive. Un lavoro lungo ed impegnativo premiato nel 1993 dalla “Menzione Speciale Museo dell’Anno/Museum of the Year Award” assegnata dal Consiglio d’Europa. Il Museo dell’Olivo è stato allestito in una palazzina di inizio secolo, sede storica della Fratelli Carli, di cui si possono ancora ammirare lo scalone liberty e le vetrate policrome originali. Il Museo è diventato un punto di riferimento per appassionati da tutto il mondo e ﬁnora è stato visitato da quasi trecentomila persone. L’8 giugno 2002 è stata inaugurata una nuova ala del Museo che ha raddoppiato gli spazi espositivi. Nella undicesima sala viene approfondito, grazie ad una multivisione, il tema della Dieta Mediterranea, deﬁnita con questo nome dallo studioso americano, il nutrizionista Ancel Keys, che ricevette l’incarico dal governo USA di esaminare l’incidenza di mortalità dovuta ad affezioni coronariche. Nelle sale 12-13 e 14 si possono ammirare due frantoi liguri: uno, del ‘600, veniva azionato dalla forza animale, l’altro, settecentesco, dalla forza idraulica. Aromas and fragrant oils had great importance in Greek civilisation: skin, hair, clothes scented of oils. For all the great ancient civilisations the oil-based cosmetics were very precious and commercialised in the whole Mediterranean area, hold in reﬁned unguentary vases of different shapes and materials.

The cataloguing of all objects, the contents processing and the study of the different exhibits took more than ﬁve years. A long and demanding work which was awarded the “Special Mentioning Museum of the Year” in 1993 by the European Council. The Olive Tree Museum is housed in a building dating back to the beginning of the century, the historic headquarters of the “Fratelli Carli” company in which the Art-Nouveau staircase and the polychromatic windows can still be admired. The Museum has become a landmark for people coming from all over the world and up to now has being visited by almost three hundred thousand persons.

A new section of the Museum which has doubled its exhibit spaces was inaugurated on June 8th, 2002.

from the Greeks and the Phoenician populations and, within some decades, many regions had plants producing the ﬁrst olive oil in Italy (in the seventh section). In Spain the olive oil appears (eight section) in the Seventh Century BC thanks to some Phoenician merchants, founders of Cadiz. During the ﬁrst centuries of the Roman Empire, Spain became the main producer in the Mediterranean area.

The “Liguria” is the protagonist of the tenth section. The faithfully rebuilt dry-walls show the transformation undergone by the Ligurian land because of olive tree. Man created, stone by stone, terracing on the hills overlooking the sea to give space to the plant, to the detriment of the monuments of which the Ligurian people are proud. In the recent centuries the oil of the “Western Italian Riviera” was exported to France, England, Germany and crossed the oceans thus conquering the markets of North and South America and Australia. At the end of the twenties, every year almost three hundred thousand quintals of olive oil sail from “Oneglia” and “Porto Maurizio” harbours.

The suffused atmosphere of the penultimate section (n. 17) leads to the discovery of the olive as the “divine tree”. It has been the symbol of honour, glory, regality and peace; it is a source of inspiration for painters and poets. In the great monotheistic religions of the Mediterranean it is the symbol of the Lord’s presence. The tree is blessed and, in turn, it can bless. The last section (n. 18) houses the collection of lamps and oil cruets that the Carli Family started to gather more than one century ago: Phoenician, Greek and Roman unguentary vases, oil-lamps and candelabra, oriental lamps and phials for precious oils, oil cruets and silver lamps of the recent centuries.

The Carli Family wishes to explain the reason, the origin and aim of the Olive Tree Museum just through its private collection, hoping to arouse the same admiration and inspire the same respect among visitors towards this “mother plant”. The Museum has also a specialised library with more than one thousand books. Outside you ﬁnd the cafeteria, a shop and the splendid garden adorned by millenary olive trees and by a collection of jars originating from different areas of the Mediterranean. Thanks to a multivision, the eleventh section deals with the theme of the Mediterranean Diet, so called by the American nutritionist, Ancel Keys, who was given the task of studying the mortality due to coronary disease by the US government. In sections 12-13 and 14 two Ligurian oil mills can be admired. The one dating back to the seventeenth century, was powered by animals, the other of the eighteenth century, by water. Four monumental presses, weights, measures, ﬁlters, jars and an exhaustive audiovisual presentation complete this part, dedicated to the various stages of processing the olive tree in the mills and in the stores of the oil dealers of the past.

The Grand-Hotel “EXCELSIOR HOTEL ERNST“ at Cologne’s cathedral - over 140 years of tradition and elegance the constructor and owner of the hotel, which was formerly called “Hotel Ernst“. Only eight years later, in 1871, Ernst sold the hotel to Friedrich Kracht.

In 1889, Carl Kracht went to Zurich, where he married Emma Pauline Baur, the daughter of the Swiss family Baur, who owned both the famous Hotel Baur au Lac as well as the Savoy Baur en Ville. One year after his wedding, Carl Kracht’s mother handed over the Hotel Ernst to Carl and his sister Hermine Brinkhaus, maiden name Kracht. They both founded a limited company, which Hermine left three years later and from that time Carl Kracht was the sole owner of the hotel in the heart of Cologne. Carl Kracht and his family were living in Zurich, where he was managing the Hotel Baur au Lac. In the meantime, in 1905, Friedrich Reime became manager of the Hotel Ernst in Cologne. The Hotel Ernst was rebuilt from 1908 to 1910 and re-opened as the Grand-Hotel Excelsior Hotel Ernst in order to provide its high-class guests with the best comfort possible. Its guests were spoiled with something completely different and new – 100 rooms out of 250 had a private bathroom – and this at a time when both hot and cold water were very special and unusual.

Max Mattheus managed the hotel during this difficult time, being replaced by Erico Geweyer in 1958. Erico Geweyer managed the hotel for 13 years and built up the basis for its well known tradition and excellent service. Siegfried Breunig was hired in 1972 to manage the EX after Erico Geweyer’s death the preceding year.

All these renovations were done under the supervision of the interior designer Count Siegwart Pilati. Mr. Siegfried Breunig died in November 1994. In order to have enough time to find a proper replacement for Siegfried Breunig, Mr. Charles Roulet, from the family KrachtRoulet, managed the hotel until July 1995 when Mr. Manfred Brennfleck took over the position as managing director until 2003. From June 2003 until May 2004 Mr. Robert A. Schaller managed the hotel on a temporary basis. His successor since May 2004 is Mr. Wilhelm Luxem, who will continue to keep the outstanding standard of this grand hotel.

In 1918, only eight years after the re-opening, the British Army moved into the hotel after the First World War and used it as a Headquarters. During the occupation years, it was not used as a hotel. Eight years later after the British Army left, the city-centre hotel had to be renovated once again. Then on 31 December 1926, the five star Excelsior Hotel Ernst at the ‘Dom’ cathedral celebrated its second re-opening still under Friedrich Reime, who managed the hotel for the Kracht family until he died in 1938. During the Second World War it was largely destroyed and the Kracht family was very concerned to rebuild it as soon as the war was over.

ÖLN. „Die Welt zu Gast bei Freunden“ lautet das Motto der Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft vom 9. Juni bis zum 9. Juli 2006 in Deutschland – und für Köln hätte es kaum besser gewählt werden können. Schließlich sind die Einwohner der Domstadt für ihre weltoffene Art bekannt. Und mit Großveranstaltungen, die viele tausende Besucher anziehen, hat die Stadt nicht zuletzt dank des Karnevals große Erfahrung. Wer die Fußball-WM in Köln erleben möchte, bekommt zur Gastfreundschaft der Stadt auch einen erstklassigen sportlichen Event geboten. Der Spielplan der WM, der inzwischen von der FIFA bestätigt worden ist, garantiert, dass in der Domstadt in vier Vorrundenspielen (am 11., 17., 20. und 23. Juni) und einem Achtelfinale (am 26. Juni) mindestens neun verschiedene Nationalmannschaften zu sehen sein werden – die Welt zu Gast in Köln. Zwei der Teams zählen zu den acht besten Nationalmannschaften der dann aktuellen FIFA-Weltrangliste. Erstklassig ist auch das Stadion, in dem die Teams vor gut 46.000 Zuschauer gegeneinander antreten. „Diese FußballArena entspricht in allen Formen und Ausprägungen den von uns gewünschten Anforderungen, in vielen Bereichen übertrifft es diese sogar», lobte FIFA-Vertreter Markus Siegler nach einer Besichtigung des umgebauten RheinEnergieStadions im Stadtteil Müngersdorf. Welche Mannschaften hier ihre Spiele austragen werden, steht allerdings noch nicht fest. Die Auslosung der Gruppen findet voraussichtlich im Dezember 2005 statt. Bis es soweit ist, bleibt allen Fans aber noch genügend Zeit, ihr „Unternehmen Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft“ genau zu planen. In Köln, das neben der WM auch ein umfangreiches Rahmenprogramm für die ganze Familie bietet, werden rund 500.000 Besucher erwartet – die Welt zu Gast in Köln.

After all, the people of the cathedral city are noted for their open-minded nature. And the city has extensive experience with major events that attract many thousands of visitors, not least thanks to Carnival. Anyone who would like to experience the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Cologne will not only be able to experience the hospitality of the city, but also a first-class sporting event. The schedule of games for the World Cup, which has meanwhile been confirmed by FIFA, guarantees that in the Preliminary Round (11th, 17th , 20th and 23rd June) and one match in the round of the last 16 (26th June), the cathedral city will host four games in which at least nine different national teams can be seen – the world will be welcome in Cologne. Two of the teams will be from the eight top national teams in the then current FIFA world rankings. The stadium in which the teams will play before over 46,000 spectators is also first-class. “This soccer stadium meets all our requirements in full in every respect, in many areas it even surpasses them”, praised FIFA representative Markus Siegler following a visit to the rebuilt RheinEnergie Stadium in the district of Müngersdorf. Exactly which teams will play here, however, is not yet certain. The draw of the groups will probably be made in December 2005. Before the tournament opens, all the fans still have plenty of time to make precise plans for their “Operation World Cup”.
