A Word from the Curator To create this volume of International Contemporary Masters, as with the earlier ones, we scrutinized literally tens of thousands of works of thousands of artists. The project demands long hours of work by a whole organization and the work never seems to be complete. As in a sense, it is not, as we are always looking forward to what follows next. The labor may be exhausting, but there is always the thrill of the discovery of new talent and unknown perspectives. I believe that our standards are exacting, but it is always hard to formulate and define what exactly they are. Of course a work must display technical mastery of whatever medium the artist is using and there must be an originality of perspective – and these two fundamental criteria exclude much, but this is only the beginning. We also strive for as great a variety of media, styles and subject matter as possible, and also variety of the artists’ backgrounds, as we aim to produce a cross-section of good or preferably great art being produced all over the world. But the final step is seemingly subjective and almost impossible to describe. A work has to have a certain authority, whatever that may be, which seizes the viewer and leaves the feeling of being touched or even seized. Usually most people who are exposed to the work will feel this to some degree. This is the intangible which guides me personally, and which I believe touches on the very essence of art, as opposed to decoration. It is a mysterious and mystical phenomenon, very personal, yet surprisingly universal. So I give you Volume 4, and I hope that it will touch you as much as it has touched me.
Despina Tunberg
Introduction by the Editor With each succeeding volume of International Contemporary Masters, the series becomes a richer and more authoritative cross-section of art in the early 21st century over the entire planet. We try to keep the number of artists in each volume at about 200, a fairly large spectrum, but still manageable. Specifically in this volume, we have some 230 artists, with over 1000 art works. However, with all the volumes taken together, the scope is becoming encyclopedic, which is our intention – in a few years, the total number of participating artists will be in the thousands and the works depicted in the tens of thousands, which no exhibition or curated collection will be able to equal or even approach. At the same time, we try to give to each artist sufficient room to tell, or rather, display his orher own narrative. While of course the most vital element of the presentation is the images themselves, the biographies and statements give a sense of each artist’s personal historyand perspective.
6
This is an integral part of the whole structure of the Masters series and another element that sets this presentation apart – the who as well as the what. Obviously the presentation of biographies and artists’ statements is almost obligatory in individual or small group presentations, but we believe the amplitude of their inclusion in such a vast work is at the very least unusual. The juxtaposition of subject and object, creator and creation, gives rise to an interesting question: how far can the evaluation of an artwork go without the entry into the equation of the person of the artist? Clearly a work of art, especially when viewed directly in situ, stands alone and on its own merit, and we need to know nothing about the artist to appreciate it. So it is with many ancient or prehistoric works of art. We know nothing of the creators of magnificent pieces of classical black-figure Greek pottery – although we know well the myths and other subjects they depict, and we often have the signed name of the artist. But perhaps the question is raised most starkly when we confront prehistoric art, for example Paleolithic cave paintings or the sculptures of unknown peoples of Central America. The artistry is breath- taking, but we know nothing about the artist or even the culture in which they were created, beyond the bare facts that the work itself can tell us. The abiding impression, together with awe at the artistry, is one of mystery: Who were those people? Who was that person who created this? Why was this work created? When viewed this way, I believe the question leads to an inescapable answer: the fuller the knowledge we have of the person of the artist and the context of the creation, the deeper our appreciation of the work. Thus our approach in International Contemporary Masters. A second question: how great should the scope of such a collection be? Should there be limits in subject matter, genres, schools or art forms? While clearly there is always a certain subjectivity of choice on the part of the curator and selection committee (although the very volume of artists and works included should ameliorate that to some degree), should there be boundaries? We believe that the answer here is unequivocal: there can be no boundaries or limits, save the fairly obvious one of quality: i.e., technical proficiency and mastery in the given medium, and originality of the subject matter. Beyond that, anything and everything should go. We are always open to new forms of art that can be adequately depicted on the printed page, even though this may lead to a questioning of whether this or that new form should be regarded as a fine art – but we consider that the very process of doubt is fertile. Beyond that, we expect that we will inevitably include works that will be considered to be shocking. We disagree with those who maintain that beauty as a criterion of art is dead – we would say that beauty is and always must be the dominant element of art – although what constitutes beauty is a very interesting question, but beyond the scope of this introduction. But beauty is certainly not the whole story. There are many other elements in art, and paradoxically, ugliness plays a role. To paraphrase Herakleitos, nothing can exist without its opposite, and in art all the oppositions have a part. And this is perhaps part of the beauty, as with life itself.

International Contemporary Masters: Directions for Use by Constantinos V. Proimos Originality as an artistic value has played a pivotal role in art since the Renaissance. Whether classical, romantic, modern or postmodern, originality “implies some sense of coming first or doing first, a priority or lack of precedent.” Thereof stems the reverence for the original artwork which can never be substituted by a reproduction without degradation of its aesthetic value. Nonetheless, in the course of the twentieth century the art world experienced a revolution in artistic reproductions not merely in engravings, plaster casts and reduced architectural models, but primarily through the media of photography, film and digital software, reproductions of original artworks were made available for the first time on a massive scale. Besides their obvious educational role, such reproductions soon developed an autonomous artistic role as well, especially in late twentieth century and early twenty first century art. It is this positive role of reproduction, of the copy that is fundamental to the original that made Rosalind Krauss celebrate repetition and copying in art and expose the fictitious condition of the modernist discourse on originality. Krauss’s attack on originality stems from an engagement with radical artistic practices of her time, notably her lasting relation with minimalism that celebrated serial repetition but also with works by Robert Rauschenberg and Sherrie Levine who employed photographic reproductions in their pictures. The historical avant-garde as well as movements like site-specific art, body art, happenings, performance works, artistic activism and new media like video and digital art gave emphasis to the irreducibly historical character and practice of art. It is the circumstance that is original and unique, and not the artwork, claimed so many practitioners of radical twentieth century art. The here and now of artistic practice took precedence over all the idealist notions such as originality, representation, narrative, genius, style, invention and the like, which had dominated the evaluation of art since the Renaissance. The result is a constantly changing character of art in time that cannot be understood according to any set of invariants and therefore cannot afford any universalizing claims. Radical artistic practices not only dismantled any invariants, thereby rendering art theory impossible, but also influenced those artists who chose to abide by the norm. In the wake of destruction of all tradition by the avant-gardes, all form-generating rules of the past became equally valid and precious for those determined to rescue past artistic principles, amounting at the end to a peculiar democracy of styles, a rich multifariousness of forms and a highly individualistic artistic practice. Rosalind Krauss again claims that Pablo Picasso, this most emblematic figure of modern art, is also the most representative of the state of affairs just described. His “extraordinary appetite,” “his creative rage to incorporate everything” in his art, his “promiscuous attraction to all styles” and finally his eclecticism and appearance as “master pasticheur” are prophetically indicative of a historical condition epitomized in art at the end of twentieth century with the motto: anything goes. Every painting, every sculpture, every work of architecture now belong to a massive, heterogeneous and universal structure of visual arts that artistic institutions like the museums and art books put together and attempt to collect in a coherent whole. Museums and art books are institutions fostering comparison but not in the old way with Italianate classicism at the center and “everything else seen as marginal to it (…) as barbaric or demotic deviations from the norm.” Museums and art books rather proclaim “a trans-stylistic expressivity of form,” “a collective spirit of human creativity” together with the stories that sustain it and encourage viewers and artists alike to create their own fiction, by researching and recycling past norms and conventions. Institutions of the art world assemble heterogeneous work and manage to contextualize them, house them under the same roof, ascribe to them a collective meaning and invent a narrative that can ultimately host all these practices “through the democratizing effects of camera and press.” Curators and critics therefore, acquire today an increasingly important role and so do museums and art books; the Guggenheim at Bilbao as well as Skira editions are examples of receptacle structures which are designed as artworks at their own right. Attuned to radical art practices and the cult of the avant-garde, there is a strong temptation to lament this situation, described by “anything goes.” This attitude of lamentation characterizes Benjamin H. D. Buchloh in his eagerness to ostracize many revivals in contemporary painting as regressive and reactionary, as he did, for example, in the case of German neo-expressionism. I think that the temptation to lament the decline of avant-garde ought to be resisted, without however an endorsement of the motto “anything goes.” Furthermore, resisting the temptation of constant historical progress that theorists of avant-garde, including Buchloh, often fall prey to, also means negating the defense of artistic practices like the German neo-expressionism, in the name of avant-garde and radicalism again. It is high time we put to rest the general obligation to avant-garde and radicalism, an obligation which reveals a nostalgia for the past, especially for the first quarter of the twentieth century. Indeed anything goes, as long as this is well researched and argued in terms of painting, sculpture or architecture, in any possible combination of these three or in any of the new artistic media employed in twentieth century. Nowadays, for their work, artists raid art books and catalogues in this vast museum without walls which is the world of artistic reproductions. They simply do what the most inquisitive among them have always been doing: they conduct research and collect information, before they approach their subjects. Dr Constantinos V. Proimos Adjunct Lecturer at the Hellenic Open University, cproimos@otenet.gr

OLIVIA ALEXANDER “The natural world has always captured my imagination. The rich, red sand of the Northern Territory in outback Australia, patterns on a tree trunk left behind by peeling bark or the colours of a sunrise playing across the rock faces on the escarpment where I live. These are what inspire me to paint. My style? Expressionistic with a touch of the Abstract! I don't paint photo realism but rather an expression and the emotion of what I see and feel about the subject. My paintings contain many layers, water colours, inks acrylics. Textured papers and exclusive, specialized techniques are also applied. My hope is to communicate a place, a time, or memory that sparks a connection between my art and the viewer.

DIANA ANDEREGG “VISIONARIES ARE CHANGING THE WORLD…NOT THE NITPICKERS… Painting means to me to be myself, to create my own sight of the world. Elements, nature and the whole amazing creation around us, is part of my work in painting, photography, light objects and sculptures. I am also interested in the human being itself and the challenge to face our own mortality. Pictures are telling more than a thousand words… I get my inspirations on my journeys; to be silent, with eyes wide open and listen to life, so the vision gets ME, just in a silent moment…as a gift… My Artwork has a message, it is functional, inspired by daily life, recycling and down to earth…but spiritual as well. ART IS WHEN SPIRIT GETS MATTER.”

Aranyshev Yaroslav, Russia
The Dolls Oil on canvas 90 x 90 cm or 35 x 35 in.
ANDREY
ARANYSHEV
was born in Yarsolavl, Russia in 1956 where he still lives and works today. He has diverse artistic interests and abilities, working in different genres: landscape, portrait, still-life, narrative picture. The characteristic features of Aranyshev’s works are their clear composition, the fortunate combination of painting and graphic techniques, and optimal use of the colour. The main idea of the plot always governs formal means. Aranyshev’s works are a complex combination of clear, sharp drawing and the exciting instability of the paint form. His canvases embody the ample diversity, expressiveness and beauty of images of the surrounding world. Aranyshev has participated in solo and group international exhibits in Russia, Greece, Canada, Czech, France and the United States.

DINO ARESCA was born in Asti, Italy, where he still lives and works today. There is poetry in the flow of colors and materials Dino Aersca uses in his paintings. His work reveals a concept of abstraction, remarkably original, due to his studies, as well as, his personality. Formal content and inner awareness, evolve into a high level spatial art. His paintings are to be viewed with an open spiritual sensivity, as the emotion received by the viewer is strong and engaging, marking an impression on the subconscious. Aresca has participated in numerous national and international exhibits, in cities including New York, Vienna, Grenoble, Monte Carlo, Milan, Bologna, and Venice.

Atkins uses a lot of musical analogies to make a point, likens his work to something of a “John Coltrane,” in terms of the artistic possibilities he’s examining and making visible. Born in Chicago in 1957 and raised on the south side of Chicago during the sixties. Atkins formed a desire to interpret and put in a tangible form the society around him that was molding his way of thinking. His “Abstract Truth” exhibition at Concordia University explores the issues of race globally. As Atkins has noted in the past, his desire is for his work to open a dialogue where exploring the “truth” is a thought provoking experience.

“Reflections of light and objects in water have always captivated me. I am intrigued by the mirrored images produced by water, because these new, upside-down scenes seem to show another side of the world. Water has moral excellence in that it reflects everything as it is. For this reason, I pursue getting into self-reflection by exploring water reflection. In my paintings, I express myself with diverse figures reflected in water. At the same time, I translate inspirations from water reflections into my own emotional colors. I use the wet-in-wet paint method to create lively and emotional atmospheres on canvas. In order to reflect on myself, I combine Western materials like oil with my Asian touch which reflects my identity.

“Depicting imaginary landscapes with colors, texture, and movement gives me pause to reflect on youthful exploring. Treading on cross-bedded sandstone formed from ancient dunes that were uplifted in tumultuous action, eroded and exposed, the geological formations often studied from altitude. While painting, I recall exploring the rugged western environment, and studying geological formations from the cockpit; imagining the forces required to expose my hiking trails. I apply paint in horizontal patterns, reflecting the layering of sedimentary rock; then cause the vertical lifting and the violent development of the landscape.” A New York critic wrote, “Bailey draws the spectator into a dynamic viewing experience where one not only sees the discernible beauty in nature, but feels the impact upon its illumination. (…)There is a strong feeling of texture which emphasizes the inspiration of nature as there is a presence of sand, water and wind rather than oil upon the canvas.”

“From an early age I loved taking things apart and putting hem back together the way I thought it should look, whether it be in size, colour or shape. I graduated to paper drawings and colouring shapes and arranging where a landscape might go, drawing in trees, the sky, houses in all different shapes and arranged like a jigsaw puzzle, but my way. Now shape, colour and line are a wonderful playground I call art. Juicy colours, organic and whimsical shapes show up in many places and in many paintings. The whimsy of the line drawings where flowers appear in an outline of a cat or the strong bold colour of acrylic leads to just one thing. “Pick up your brush, crank up the tunes and let the joy begin.”

LOGAN BAUER was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota, though much of his formative years were spent overseas. He took his first painting class in London, England at the age of thirteen. He graduated from Trinity University San Antonio, Texas with a BA in Education and a minor in History and Political Science. During his last year at Trinity he took the majority of his coursework in the Fine Arts department, where he devoted much of his time to painting. Settling in Arizona he continued his art education at Phoenix College and Arizona State University. Only recently have circumstances permitted him to transform what had been a pastime into a full-time commitment. A figurative and landscape artist, Bauer’s impressionistic and contemporary abstract imagery is imbued with a vivid sense of color, light, and emotion informed by the vistas of his lifelong travels. His oil paintings are characterized by years of experimenting with watercolor techniques that blend color in ethereal and unsuspecting ways and that add to the narratives he depicts on canvas. Bauer continues to study life drawing and painting in classroom and workshop settings and is a member of the Arizona Watercolor Association (AWA), the Arizona Artist Guild (AAG), and has been juried into the Arizona Art Alliance (AAA).

His paintings have also appeared in numerous publications and electronic media. Leon Harari, an art critic in Israel, wrote about Elisha’s art “Elisha’s pictures have a unique and independent style of their own with so much rhythm. Most of his images combine both figurative and surrealistic elements, as if they were taken from a different world, but yet are strikingly realistic and appealing.’’ ”My paintings are about the essence and rhythm of life, all depicting symbols of life the way I see it. I have always strived to reach the ultimate balance in composition and colors. The struggle of making a society more receptive of art in general has followed me throughout my life. I strongly believe that art plays an important roll in every society by transforming thinking and understanding of the immediate surroundings. I faced numerous challenges in my artistic life but the desire to paint prevailed. Private art collectors, galleries and museums around the world have acquired many of my paintings. “ Email: elisha@elishasart.com Website: www.elishasart.com

Her works reveal their power through the force and the brightness of colors, through the different effects of forms, the textures, the pictorial matter, the magnetic energy sign which spring from the canvas In her paintings, imagination and creativity are released through the flow of the living and acting forces on the canvas, the interaction of spaces, forms and color connection, taking them beyond to their physical limits. Left: Reef Life Riff I Mixed media on canvas 36 x 48 in. or 91 x 122 cm Right: Bottom of An Ancient Sea, 4 Mixed media on canvas 36 x 48 in. or 91 x 122 cm
MICKEY BOND was born in Israel to holocaust survivors and raised in Boston. She attended Colgate University as an undergraduate and later received an MA in American Literature from the University of Michigan. Bond has lived in Santa Fe since 1994 and is represented by several New Mexico galleries. “My paintings reflect my daily response to nature's beauty, her dynamic forces and the mystery of creation. I work plein air as much as possible and in all weathers, even if that means only sketching in my car. I work in two styles: abstract landscape paintings and mixed media abstracts. Though both derive from the same plein air experience, the landscapes evoke a sense of place and mood whereas the abstracts explore an essential aspect of nature such as the sea, sky and land. My current abstract series “Bottom of An Ancient Sea,” suggests sea life as it might have existed in a mythic, primordial state, when New Mexico was underwater perhaps. I've imagined a place of glittering light and motion where life forms are inchoate and elusive. I know that my imagery was deeply influenced by a swim last summer over coral encrusted rocks in Hawaii, where a sea turtle led the way. I've used translucent handmade paper from Thailand and Japan featuring banana, mango and Unryu (mulberry) fibers. Casein, acrylic paint and acrylic mediums, combine with the translucent papers to form diaphanous layers and passages where forms float and seem to sway. As an abstract expressionist,I prize mark making highly and allow my compositions to grow out of direct contact with my painting media. I do use brushes but mainly non-traditional such as scrapers, cloths, sponges, knives and primarily my hands. “

HAYDEN JAMES BONE has lived in Australia for over 28 years, migrating there with his family from New Zealand in 1980 when he was ten years old. Hayden has been a professional artist specialising in contemporary art for private and commercial clients for nearly twenty years. He began his career painting in oils and focussing on portraits and figurative subject matter. His style then deviated where he switched to acrylics and pushed into explosive textures and mediums with an abstract and geometric thread. Hayden is completely self-taught mastering his skills through exploration and experimentation on a range of mediums. His work has been included in several solo and group exhibits in Australia. Hayden also invented ART OUT – a weather resistant canvas that can be displayed in exterior applications. “One of my passions is to explore new ideas allowing the visions to translate into reality. Being completely self taught I have the freedom of experimenting without the fortifications of tuition to curtail me. I believe there is more to a painting than just the subject matter and that other senses should also receive pleasure from the work. was born in New Jersey, where he believes the best of both worlds reside; the scenic setting of northern New Jersey and the stimulating energy of New York City. In 1980, he moved to Chicago to pursue a BFA at Columbia College, School of Art and Design. His studies led him to focus on the use of negative space, line, texture, and color. In 1990 he moved to southern California in order to broaden his ideas and techniques. His time in California allowed him to experienment with acrylic paints. Michael loves to keep his audience and collectors guessing as to what it is they are viewing, his work leaves the interpretation to the viewer and becomes even more interesting , given the fact that he is colorblind. “Nature is perfect, flawless and endless. Nature is my inspiration, my motivation in transpiring art. Nature provides everything to spark the imagination and creativity in all of us. Burquest Birmingham, United Kingdom
Concupiscence III Oil on canvas 100 x 80 cm or 39 x 31 in.
GRAHAM BURQUEST began his artistic career in Liverpool, UK, the city being an integral part of his formative development. It was here through the vibrancy of the people and culture that his ideas first took shape. He now lives and works in Birmingham, UK, his base for several years and where he has had the opportunity to explore further the themes within his work. He has travelled extensively, in particular throughout Europe where he finds the different languages and traditions to be highly stimulating. In the past year his art has been shown in exhibitions in London and New York. Burquest’s paintings look at the body, at flesh, age and beauty, and at the relationships that we form with others, be this plutonic or sexual. Darkened backgrounds and distorted perspective remove the figures from a perceived reality, leaving an ambiguity of meaning within them. The physical property of the oil paint gives an emphasis to the depth and weight of the image. Through this he seeks to explore the human condition, our pleasures, pain, isolation and vulnerability. Influences come from many sources, including classical literature, poetry, music and film. Email: graham.burquest@hotmail.com Website: www.grahamburquest.co.uk

“ I do not paint what I see, I paint what I am. I have always painted, since painting is to see life from a different angle, to listen to what is not said, and to know intuitively that what is not seen. It is to pour out what one feels in a certain moment, without masks or decorations, that is why I paint nudes, I shape the naked emotion, sometimes with fear, some others without it; but it does not limit myself to feel it and to express it. It is the constant interior search and encounter; it is to see myself from the outside, without filters. It is to search that immense force which generates life, as an overflowing energy. The technique I use is very vast, since I go from oil, pencil, charcoal up to graphics, in the engravings with their inks, mototypes, etc. For me, to create has been the passport to freedom.”

of Hupa/Dine descent, was raised on the Navajo Reservation. His artwork was inspired early on, by spiritual images in Navajo sand paintings and contemporary designs incorporated in Navajo rug weaving. While his work and life are influenced by his Native American heritage, he is seeking to be part of a movement of contemporary artists who are using the Native American influence to take art in a new direction. Each abstract piece embodies an emotion or state of mind, which I translated into paint on canvas.

STACEY
CLARFIELD NEWMAN
is a collagist and a painter who has developed a unique method of recycling ephemera to create striking hand-painted papers. She then uses them as painterly “brushstrokes of paper” to produce lyrical collages containing abstracted “mindscapes” and whimsical social commentary. Most recently, Clarfield Newman spent two months living and working in Kolkata, India at the Udayan School, a welfare and rehabilitation school for children of leprosy patients. There she taught her techniques of “painting with paper” to 300 children ages 4 - 18, living with the students in the girls dormitory, crossing cultural and language barriers through art. In February of 2010, she curated and mounted an exhibit of the children’s work, “Art of the Heart”, at the prestigious Chamber of Commerce’s Palladian Lounge in Kolkata. The show opened to rave reviews by the city’s renowned cultural media and was a resounding success. The proceeds of the art sales were donated for the continued welfare of Udayan School.

John’s Love Watercolor on silk 36 x 32 in. or 91 x 81 cm
DEBBI CHAN “ I did not become an artist, I was born an artist. I have spent my life perfecting it. I create because I must; a primal need like eating or sleeping. Through my eyes, the world is turned into an art form, be it painting or carving. I am extremely prolific and I do not wait to ”Be in the Mood” before I begin with a work of art. I paint what I perceive... very simply, the essence of my inspiration: the ‘dao.’ I study life and believe living is always a learning process. I will only stop learning and developing after death. “ Although Chan uses various media, all her works are filtered through Eastern thought. She believes her relief carvings are nothing more than paintings done with a carving tool. Her work is now easily recognized because of the delicate use of color and light, great detail and the calligraphy gracing each piece. Very often her paintings show the Idaho land that she has come to love. It is a lovely transition between east and west. Chan did study carving and traditional Chinese techniques with masterful teachers, although she is mostly a self-taught artist.

COOK
was born in Iran and now lives and works in California. Her works suggest that there is a range of metaphysical musing in time and space. Additionally expansive readings and psychologically dense inferences are also read through the rendering of form, color and space. Cook’s abstractions, comprised in part of the basic expressive unit of gesture abstraction, the painterly brush stroke against brightly saturated colors, create luminous high voltage. Pictorial fields of stunning grace and amplitude. Cook’s achievement in her body of work is arriving at a point in her mastery to create works that are not only visually engaging on a formal level, but also philosophically stimulating and profound. This sensitivie art-making process is not sweet and guileless. Cook’s work shakes and rattles. There is unabashed passion. Her looming and tremulous mark making and her use of color, evoke the gathering of fading perceptions and the locus of newly emerging interpretations. Playfulness and paradox infiltrate her efforts, allowing the viewer to concieve parts of infinite space and void within fullness. De Knecht Krimpen aan den Ijssel, Netherlands
Chrysler Building Acrylic on canvas 45 x 65 cm or 18 x 25 in.
SIMONE DE KNECHT was born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands in 1952. Her work is influenced by modern urban cities with their adventuresome architecture and spectacular and dazzling commercials. The canvas, filled from top to bottom, is reminiscent of a stainedglass-window through which the visitor is lured into an imaginative world. Although flat, alvost devoid of perspective, de Knecht's work achieves depth through use of multiple layers of colour. Back lines and meticulous detail, distinctive features of her work, suggest a fascination with an ordered chaos, the autonomy and crowd, of urban city architecture. De Knecht was awarded “the Jeroen-Bosch-Concours prize as part of Rotterdam City of Culture 2001.

Landschap 12 Oil on canvas 100 x 80 cm or 39 x 31 in.
SLAVKO DUJIC is a Croatian artist, based in the Netherlands. He Studied at the Stedelijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Hasselt, where he specialized in abstract art and Academie voor plastische kunsten in Genk Belgium and is a member of a professional artists association in Holland. Dujic has exhibited in international, solo and group shows in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy and the United States. “To tell a tale by mixing emotion and energy with color, sometimes intentionally, resembling the simplicity of a cave drawing, that is my recipe. Transformation by walking, between realism and abstraction and vice versa, brings the elements to balance. To demonstrate the purity and beauty of the contact, between colour and canvas, is my language. I do not want to search throughout the painting process; I’d rather explore and think during the preparation. That makes the ‘battle,’ between the canvas and me, sincere. The painter’s urge to make something personal, authentic and original is not the easiest job, but it gives a special emotional charm and fulfilment at a smallest success.”

Change in the Weather Oil on canvas 58 x 70 in. or 147 x 179 cm
BERNARD DUNAUX was born in Sydney and moved to the United States in 1981 after completing his formal art studies in Paris, France. He currently works from his studio in Los Angeles. He has developed a style of seeming contrast and contradiction that paradoxically unifies rather than separates formal elements in visual harmony - energetic brushstrokes against fields of soft color, bright colors highlighting neutral negative spaces-. In his latest works, the multi layered ground itself has become a visual archive of the painter’s process, intimately connecting the viewer with the work. Bernard’s unwillingness to adhere to any one school of thought leads to finished pieces that are refined, refreshingly contemporary, yet strikingly classic. “ I am in a constant search of new forms of visual intellectual expression. My creative process originates with what I identify as a non-moment when constant thought ceases, and shifts into movement and line, paint and canvas. Subject matter remains only a starting point, as the direct action of painting itself takes over and dictates my course. Each painting strives to elicit a glimpse of the “visual thought”, before the thought becomes instinctual emotion. Email: bdunaux@sbcglobal.net Website: www.dunaux.com

Surrounded by a great appreciation of art from an early age; her father being an excellent oil painter, she spent hours as a child wandering around the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. After a spiritual retreat in the summer of 2006, Lizzy Forrester started to dedicate all her free time to her great passion, painting. By October 2008 she decided, on account of a seemingly endless and ever growing list of invitations on an international lever to give up work completely and dedicate herself to painting. ....It is not unusual for Lizzy to feel or experience the creation of her Artwork as explosive: the paintings are full of life energy.

I believe genuine and true feelings surrounding art is in the eye (mind) of the beholder. The purpose of art is to create interest and generate feelings within the beholder. In my paintings, I like to mix motives of the human inner (and outer) nature with motives external to the human body and mind and the reality in which we live.

JONATHAN FRANK is a full-time, self-taught artist, living, and working in Moab, Utah. Since 2000, he has participated in numerous juried state, national, and international exhibitions. From 2003 to 2006 he showed on the national art festival circuit, resulting in his paintings being acquired by collectors from across the country, and around the world. Jonathan Frank is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society, the Colorado Watercolor Society, the Western Colorado Watercolor Society, and the Texas Watercolor Society. He has received numerous awards, and has been recognized in a variety of print media for his achievements so far. “ I’ve always been extremely connected to place, hence my love for the natural landscape. In fact, landscape is arguably the most important element of human existence. Without it we’d all be floating around in space with nothing to eat. That being said, painting beautiful places comes very naturally, and my high-definition presentations of them exemplify their importance to me. Recently, I’ve discovered a means of expressing ideas beyond the limits of representation through abstract expressionism. While elements of landscape may still be present, they are merely implied, rather than depicted directly. Color and design are the emphasis. These “random acts of beauty” are dripped, poured, and thrown onto the support, providing a wonderful counterbalance to the precision of the landscapes.” Email: jon@jonathanfrankstudio.com Website: www.jonathanfrankstudio.com

“Painting is a true passion for me, it is an inner state of mind where I'm actually free of all thought and all that I focus on is to listen and obey my instincts that guide me to express my feelings. It is my creative mean to express that energy that manifests itself in me. Nature, music and harmony are external factors that significantly influence and inspire my creative process. I let myself emerge into the realm of my imagination and allow, whatever is intended to be expressed, through the exploration of different motions, shapes, emotive colors and composition. I rarely have knowledge of what the outcome will be and this gives me the power to improvise and evolve in a mental dialogue between myself and the canvas.

attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. “My art interrogates man’s situation with respect to daily pressures and struggles, but more broadly deals with the human events of war, discrimination, manipulation, exploitation, and finally, man’s situation as a living entity within an infinite universe. Are these situations mutually exclusive; does man contemplate the universe when living, fighting, exploiting or surviving? If, and when, does a human finally contemplate his situation; within the universe are all other aspects of humanity separate and irreconcilable? These concepts allow an endless supply of inspiration and emotional energy, for breaking and challenging contemporary art forms and for exploring a subliminal connection with the universe. I delved into this theme on canvas, through fractured images and thoughts that deal with contemporary events and issues.” Email: chrisfraser.tshirt@gmail.com Website: www.chrisfraser.org Tel.: +781 775 1423

CATHY FUCHS- HOLMAN began painting in 1979. Though predominantly self-taught, she studied under Lillian Boettcher, a well known Texan artist, and took workshops from many accomplished artists, including Kenneth Richard Turner, Dick Turner, Bob Rohm, Bobby Kilpatrick, Rosemary Mahoney, Doris Munson, Margaret Craig and Brad Braun. Recently she decided to further her education, at one of the country's largest community-based art schools - Southwest School Of Art and Craft in San Antonio, Texas. In addition to acrylics, oils, pastels, water colors and mixed media, she is proficient in faux finishing and Italian Plaster applications , which she studied at the Definitive Decorative Arts School in Houston, Texas and the School of Italian Plaster in Atlanta, Georgia. Cathy Holman has painted photography backdrops for award winning photographers, as well as murals in fine homes and offices across Texas. “Weimar, Texas has been my lifelong home. Growing up on a dairy farm in rural America gave me an appreciation for my favorite subject - the rural landscape. I find nothing more exhilarating than painting in "Plein Aire" - capturing the fleeting light effects that occur in nature,so as to allow you - when viewing my works - to feel as if you are actually in the scene. I also paint floral and animal portraits and am currently exploring abstract ,mixed media and print making. I am finding that the palette knife allows spontaneous and exhilarating expression of the scene I'm painting. Email: cathyfuchsholman@hughes.net Website: www.cathyfuchsholman.com

"Many people have asked me for the obvious difference of style between my prints and my paintings. I’m attracted by the drama inherent to drawing. I enjoy searching for the perfection to detail, the variety of values and the expression of the line which is proper of drawing and I think is vital to printmaking. I find it easier to convey a message with the explicit language of the form and without the distraction of color. But from painting, I find the use of color fascinating and I enjoy the sensation of freedom that it produces me. That’s the reason why abstraction takes over my paintings and the figure leads my prints. When I need to work, I etch but when I paint, it’s playtime."

An Authentic Na誰ve Artist by Marie Jeanne Sedeyn A Belgian, born in 1915 in a little village of Wallonnie in a modest family, he left school at 14, became an industrial worker for a few years, and later an itinerant dealer, selling linen and clothes on marketplaces in small towns. He never received any artistic education or training, and used then to spend his free time in physical exercise : bicycle since he was a child, swimming even in winter (crossing the Meuse for Xmas), later long horse rides in his beloved country. He had been successful enough to ensure a peaceful retirement. Contact: Marie Jeanne Sedeyn mj.sedeyn@gmail.com

Having come to Paris in 1999, he visited the Louvre and various exhibitions, and he felt the impulse to paint. So he just started, and never ceased until his death in 2005.He was a smiling man, never unkind to anybody, never taking himself too seriously, but enjoying life at every moment. His paintings communicate his joie de vivre and bring happiness to the beholder. At first, he thought he painted for his own pleasure and was not prepared to confront a public. But he did accept when he had a number of paintings, and then was both surprised and happy to see the smile on the visitors' faces. He leaves about sixty paintings, all different, including walls in his little house in Belgium.

During school, art became my favorite subject, but I did not pursue it again until recently. I now live in the beautiful seaside suburb of Scarborough in Queensland and six years ago was introduced to a drawing class by a neighbour. My art process involves using the power of color and light. “I really love working with wet mediums such as ink and watercolor, managing them and letting them flow to achieve a result which is spontaneous, sensual and exciting! I see the nude as representing us all, bare of pretensions and a projection of our desires, fears, pleasures, pains and mystery in our lives. For me, working with the nude from life is a very contemporary way of expressing myself in the time I am living. It also comes to us from the great traditions of Western art.

bases her paintings loosely on the circle. In them, circles are laid over and under eachother to create the effect of slow, deliberate movement across the picture plane on one hand and pulsing, dynamic rhythm on the other. Abstract organisms rooted in the natural world float around in fictionalized spatial situations, urging the eye to follow the trail, caused by their movement. Unlike traditional landscape painting, which muses on the external world, these paintings embark on a journey through an internal world very much choreographed by the artist. Part pattern, part tattoo, part tribal dance the paintings derive their vitality from a wide variety of sources including the Vienna Werkstadt, Aborigianal crop paintings, 20th century pattern design, the wild color world of Matisse and marine biology as seen in the work of the 19th century German biologist Ernst Haeckel. The forms conjure up the notions of cells and organisms while at the same time suggest the concept of microcosm vs. macrocosm: a single cell or an entire universe. Each painting contains its own family of form, and like the snowflake, no two will ever be precisely the same. Hackett works primarily in oil paint with an additional interest in watercolor, pencil and printmaking.
“I began my career as an artist by becoming an art history major in college. Fascinated with the history of art I looked at a lot of churches and spent hours in a lot of museums. I worked in art galleries, at magazines and finally had my own gallery in manhattan’s east village in the late 80’s-early 90’s. Not satisfied with promoting everyone else’s work, I went back and got my MFA at Parsons/New School in 1996 and have since joined the ranks of New York City’s creative many with shows here and there and work in many private and a few public collections. I cannot think of a better place to live and make art as crowded and busy as it may be.” Email: vineland669@gmail.com Website: www.melindahackett.com

“Life is such a myriad mix of great beauty and terrible suffering, of the piercingly real and the ineffably abstract. My art is fiercely eclectic; it’s how I see and experience the world. My studio is my sanctuary, and applying paint to canvas involves a transfer of energy: personal, spiritual, emotional, imaginative. It is the intangible mystery of life made present, in all its beauty, all its horror, its pain, its humor, its sorrow, its joy. I am intrigued by how the energy and inner life, the joys and insecurities, of the artist gets translated onto the canvas and then how the viewer responds and joins in co-creating what emanates from the work of art.”

“Clearly, my work is not a commentary on realism. The images are slightly abstract and at times reminiscent of the traditional folk paintings first discovered in my New England youth. My art is figurative, and also is a result of a lifelong study of those who created with similar sensibilities over the course of art history . I make pictures in the simple hope of befriending the viewer.

EVA HOFFMANN Some of Hoffmann's paintings are as rigid and unyielding as math equations. They are sturdy, reliable, and seem almost engineered rather than painted, put together with a welder rather than with a brush. It may come as a surprise, then, that Hoffmann demonstrates such tenderness in her terse interpretations of landscapes, which are pared down until they resemble color field paintings. She is almost messianic, taking on what our nervous generation, glutted with choices, is often unable to do: selecting a path knowing that this means the rejection of infinite others. RUTH KAZEZ was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1930 and studied fine art at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Academie Julian in Paris France. She has had hundrends of national and international solo shows and participated in numerous group exhibits. “The massive quality of each animal that makes up the subject of my recent work is related to my abstract paintings. A minimalist handling of such realistic subjectmatter enables me to place the animal in a grand-scale landscape without including any landscape information. I have hoped the handling of the drawing material and the size of the subject relative to the size of the canvas or paper has made the animal itself an element of landscape. Although the animals are in no way anthropomorphic, I feel the ease with which one can identify with them enlarges the subject of the work and permits a sense of human involvement and relationship with nature. I have been asked why would I choose rats and a cockroach for a subject. If I were religious, I might say they are all God's creatures. I am not, so I can only say that all creatures are part of the world and as such are included is the whole aesthetic element of our universe. Yet I can't quite encompass all life in such a sentimental stat ment. The idea of a swarming mass of maggots on a carcass is much more of a challenge to such a philosophy than I am able to deal with. But I'm working on it. Email: rtkazez@gmail.com Website : www.ruthkazez.com

‘’Art is an integrated system consisting of different components. The ultimate goal is trying to reach renovation, aesthetic and perfection in arts. In the universe, sounds and energy have colours. Therefore, music consists of colours and arpeggios, scales and chromatic scale are in fact forms. My paintings emerge when I transform symphonies, preludes and concertos, which are forms of music, into shapes and figures by using my pallette. Their themes include freedom, fertility, and women just like universe. I produce my paintings by shaping abstract figures using spots in an expressionist manner based on the principle that art is equal to search. I am totally free andnot affiliated with any movement. I feel the emotiones of musicians, composers and painters who send messages to the whole universe by means of music and colours. I continue to create imagination. It is coming from my heart..’’.

He continued his interest in painting and would be considered to be self taught, taking up his brushes again in 2005.Krzywicki’s style has changed from painting land and seascapes in his pre business era to now painting modern interpretations of our current times and projections to the future with subjects ranging from wind farms to refuse collection and modern technology to desert scenes.Krzywicki works mainly with oil and acrylic and combines ‘detail’ with free flowing brush strokes. He considers himself to be influenced by Edward Hopper, Georges Braque and Rene Magritte. Email: keith.krzywicki@zen.co.uk Website: www.krzywickimodernart.com

“I have attempted to produce works that provide a visual commentary on issues of today and tomorrow, particularly concerning our environment and our consumer society. Whilst I have created ‘art’ from images of industrial waste and rubbish, I have also included in most paintings a degree of optimism for the future; optimism portrayed by factory smoke recycled to fields of flowers is an example. However, often the viewer is left to ponder if the image represents hope or despair for the future. I often juxtapose the real and the unreal in an attempt to create a message to those who view the painting.”

“Further study and experimentation led laCreta to develop her own encaustic technique as a vehicle for exploring the subject of memory. Drawing upon her training as a psychologist and academic, she incorporates into her work a variety of theoretical ideas, thus infusing it with another range of textures, beyond the pictorial. Freudian concepts such as the unconscious, repression, and latent/manifest content are especially important to the encaustic paintings. Such a range of influences serves to broaden her work, giving it a more fluid, open-ended character that invites the viewer to appreciate it in his/her own unique way. The unique combination of elements Silvana LaCreta Ravena brings to her work—artistic, personal, and professional—gives her the credibility of an original. While each individual piece of hers certainly “speaks for itself,” when seen in the context of the artist’s background, ideas, and singular technique, it clearly gains a degree of vitality and significance that indicates the true measure of the work.” By Adam Eisenstat (2009)

Preserving the Four Elements Acrylic on canvas 69 x 51 cm or 27 x 20 in.
MIRIAM LIBHABER By taking advantage of her experiences, Libhaber makes up her own language. Each part of her personal iconographic elements is made of the moments she exists. Through the adventure that represents her existence and her beliefs she can imprint adequate concepts, to transform them in a pictorial language and to give them an expression into a canvas, a piece of paper, a box or into un- traditional objects such as curtains. Everything in Miriam’s work shows us that for her, being committed to art is committing to life and nature itself. From the very trenches of art, Libhaber defends, in her own way, our natural resources.

Through ecology and by depicting life and not death, she propounds teaching us how to be respectful of Nature. She chooses to portray the best the world can offer in a plentiful state and not through painful images. For her, it is easy to justify the importance of taking care of the planet as well as it is difficult to get people to understand. That is why Miriam’s aim is, through her images, to awaken the conscience of those, who still do not believe that at the end of the day Earth will pass a very costly bill; one that even giving our lives as payment will never be liquidated. Her work, however, is not giving expression to ecological disasters, but to the marvel that is being alive. She thanks the World for being alive. That is why in her painting she captures paradises that are still capable of being saved.

She began to take workshops and classes from accomplished artists in Oregon and California to study seascape painting techniques ( Byron Pickering, E John Robinson, Lyn Lasneski, Buck Paulson). Her frequent trips to the Oregon coast with her three dogs and walks on the beach at sunset further inspired her work. She now paints almost exclusively seascapes and strives to create the feel and motion of the sea on canvas.

MAJDANDŽIĆ
was born in 1931 in Bosnia and studied foreign trade, economics and art in Belgrade from 1950 until 1959. Since 1969 he lives and works in the Netherlands. He exhibits his artwork since 1958. He likes to travel and has visited all but one of the world’s continents. His recent paintings investigate a sort of geology in a single squared meter, where natural processes such as crystallization, erosion and sedimentation interact. Crystallization can be recognized in the geometric forms and the rules they obey; erosion and sedimentation are represented by the flows and the sprinkles of the paint. Majdandžić tries to create the illusion that the presented forms were born out of nature, although it remains clear that they are man-made models. It is an attempt to provide the “concept-network” of the painting with a clear ontology, in order to convince the senses as well. “Nature has appointed two sentinels of life: the guardian angel of pleasure and the devil of pain. Art from the twentieth century has been enthralled by the devil of pain for too long, whilst the esthetic sold itself away. In my art, I refuse to shun intrinsic beauty. ”

LENA MANDAL is very inspired by her roots; the beautiful and wild Danish Westcoast . In her paintings she often uses the feelings that this brings forth, as a channel of expressing herself. She is intrigued by the art of capturing human behavior and moods and expressing them through birds, that come to life through torn pieces of old maps, leaving the viewer with an extra dimension, - connecting with their places of origin and the many feelings and associations attached to this. Some of the images relate to global warming and the human destruction of the natural environment for bird- and animal life.
