LOCKPORT TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL WIND SYMPHONY Thirty-five miles southwest of Chicago, Lockport Township High School serves students from the communities of Lockport, Crest Hill, Fairmont, Homer Glen, Lemont, and Orland Park. Lockport Township High School District 205 maintains two campuses with a combined enrollment of approximately 3,700: a Central ninth grade campus and an East campus for grades ten through twelve. LTHS is ranked in the Top 9 Percent of all high schools in the nation, according to the Washington Post, which ranks schools for effectively preparing students for college. The Lockport Township High School Band Program has enjoyed a long history of success and community support. Notable accomplishments date back to the first Director of Bands, Ernest Caneva, who led them to the 1962 “Music Man” National Band Championship. The Marching Band was also featured in the 1986 hit film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” Currently the Band Program involves over 250 students in six concert ensembles, a nationally competitive marching ensemble, two jazz ensembles, and three winter guards. Considerable emphasis is placed on individual student progress and achievement. Each year, multiple band members are selected for the Illinois Music Education Association District Honor Band and Orchestra, AllState Bands and Orchestras, and various Chicagoland Youth Orchestras. All students audition into the Lockport Band Program, being placed into one of the two Freshman ensembles or into the three tiered East Campus ensembles. The Concert Band and Freshman Ensembles meet daily for a fifty-five minute period, while the Symphonic Band and the Wind Symphony have an additional twenty-five minute daily sectional period. In addition to the daily curricular rehearsal schedule, the Wind Symphony maintains a weekly two hour evening rehearsal. Every member of the program is encouraged to take weekly private lessons available during the curricular day, an expectation for the Wind Symphony. The ensemble attends eight to ten festivals, while presenting upwards of sixteen concerts annually. In recent years, the Wind Symphony has maintained an active performance schedule both locally and nationally. The ensemble has toured multiple recognized world-class concert halls, been consistently selected to the University of Illinois Superstate Band Festival, performed seven times at the Music for All National Concert Band Festival, and presented two concerts at The Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic. In 2008, the Lockport Band Program was awarded the prestigious Sudler Flag from the John Philip Sousa Foundation recognizing high school band programs internationally that have demonstrated particularly significant high standards of excellence in concert activities over a period of several years.
LOCKPORT TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL WIND SYMPHONY Brian Covey is the Visual and Performing Arts Chairman, in addition to serving as Director of Bands at Lockport Township High School. Mr. Covey was appointed Director in 2003 after serving two years as Associate Director of Bands. While maintaining the Department, he conducts the Wind Symphony and one of two Freshman concert ensembles in addition to overseeing the athletic performance ensembles. Prior to joining Lockport High School, Mr. Covey attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he earned his Bachelors of Music Education degree, a Masters of Music Education degree at VanderCook College of Music, and an additional Masters in Educational Administration from The University of St. Francis. Under his direction, the concert ensembles at Lockport Township High School have performed at numerous competitions and festivals throughout the state and country, consistently receiving Superior ratings. The Wind Symphony has become a nationally respected ensemble with performance highlights including the Illinois Superstate Festival at the University of Illinois (every year since 2004), the National Association for Music Education National Conference, the Illinois Music Educators Association State Conference, five performances at The Music for All National Concert Band Festival, The World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles International Conference, recipient of the John Philip Sousa Foundation Sudler Flag of Honor, and two performances at The Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic. Mr. Covey has served as an adjudicator for many regional and Illinois High School Association Solo and Ensemble Contests, Ensemble Adjudicator for both the Illinois High School Association and the Illinois Grade School Music Association, and clinician to area schools in Illinois, Iowa, and Virginia. He holds numerous Citations of Excellence from the National Band Association where he serves as a High School Representative on the Board of Directors, been awarded the “Chicagoland Educator of the Year” from Quinlan and Fabish Music, the “Mildred Jackson Lockport Township High School Teacher of the Year Award”, and was highlighted in School Band and Orchestra Magazine. He is a member of the prestigious American Bandmaster's Association, Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society, Phi Beta Mu International Bandmaster's Fraternity, and is the Illinois Music Education Association’s State Band Division President. Aaron Kennedy is currently serving as the Associate Director of Bands at Lockport Township High School. He conducts the Symphonic Band, Concert Band A, and Concert Band B. Additionally, he assists with the Marching Porters, LTHS Jazz Ensembles, Pep Band, and Wind Symphony. Mr. Kennedy received his Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2017. While at U of I, Mr. Kennedy performed in ensembles such as the Illinois Wind Symphony, Jazz Band II, Marching Illini, and several other concert and chamber ensembles. Before teaching at Lockport, Mr. Kennedy served as the Assistant Band Director in O’Fallon CCSD #90. In O’Fallon, Mr. Kennedy directed the 7th and 8th grade bands, which consistently earned superior ratings at IGSMA. Also, he led the District 90 Jazz Bands, taught 5th grade beginner classes, and assisted with the Marching Panthers at O’Fallon Township High School.

The All-Illinois Junior Band was founded for the express purpose of creating a premier musical experience for the state’s finest middle school band students. As the first statewide middle school honor band in more than half a century, membership in AIJB is determined solely through competitive blind auditions. Its goals are to provide an opportunity for middle school students to perform excellent literature with a mature ensemble and distinguished conductor, to interact with similarly dedicated student musicians from around the state of Illinois, and to encourage and inspire these outstanding young musicians to continue their musical studies. The AIJB maintains associations with the host site – The University of Illinois School of Music – and with middle school band directors around the state.
