Matt Temple was appointed Director of Bands at New Trier High School in 2007. Under his direction, the New Trier Symphonic Wind Ensemble has performed at the Midwest Clinic, Music for All National Concert Band Festival, Illinois Music Education Conference, Chicagoland Invitational Concert Band Festival, and the University of Illinois Superstate Festival. He has also led them in performances at the Sydney Opera House, Carnegie Hall in New York City, and throughout Italy. This spring break, the band will return to New York City to perform in the newly renovated David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center, home of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. The Symphonic Wind Ensemble has been featured three times on Introductions presented by WFMT, Chicago’s classical music station. In 2014, The New Trier Band Program was recognized as an inaugural National Winner of the Blue Ribbon Award for “Programs of Excellence” presented by the National Band Association.
Mr. Temple currently serves as the Vice President for the National Band Association and is humbled to be a member of the IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Awareness) committee. A strong advocate for student-centered instruction, Mr. Temple is a Past President of the Illinois committee for Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance (CMP). As a contributing editor for The Instrumentalist magazine, he has authored many articles over the past decade and has also served on the Advisory Committee for NAfME’s Music Educators Journal. Mr. Temple has received the NBA Citation of Excellence multiple times, and in 2015, he was recognized by his colleagues with the Outstanding Chicagoland Music Educator Award. He has presented sessions on music selection, score analysis, student-centered instruction, and innovative band curriculum at multiple universities, state music conferences, and twice at the Midwest Clinic. Mr. Temple frequently serves as a clinician and guest conductor throughout the United States.
The New Trier High School band program consists of 150 students, including the Freshman Concert Band, Varsity Wind Ensemble, Concert Wind Ensemble, and Symphonic Wind Ensemble. Wind and percussion students are concurrently enrolled in four curricular jazz ensembles and two orchestras. With the exception of dress rehearsals, there are no additional sectionals or rehearsals scheduled outside of regular class time. The Symphonic Wind Ensemble prepared for today’s performance in this same manner. New Trier maintains an in-house studio of private teachers for all wind, string, percussion, and vocal students. Nearly all of the students in Symphonic Wind Ensemble study privately and over 75% of all students in the wind ensemble program study privately.
Ryan Williamson is a regular member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and has performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, New York City Ballet Orchestra, APEX Ensemble, and Little Orchestra Society. Most recently, he was invited to the Marlboro Music Festival as a 2022 Participant. In October 2021, Ryan gave the world premiere performance of Dana Dimitri Richardson’s Sonata for Horn and Piano with pianist Craig Ketter, which is now available on YouTube. He has also been awarded fellowships to festivals including the National Orchestral Institute & Festival and Aspen Music Festival and School. Ryan is currently pursuing a Master’s of Music at Northwestern University under the tutelage of Gail Williams and Jonathan Boen. He completed his undergraduate studies at The Juilliard School. Past mentors include Julie Landsman, Michelle Baker, Eric Reed, Erik Ralske, and Daniel Gingrich. Ryan is a 2018 graduate of New Trier High School.
