The history behind the name Salters Haven at Lea Marina has far more significance than just being a waterfront community. The Lea Family who owned the property lived, worked and flourished the family name for over 100 years. Mr. J.H. Lea was born in 1891. He fished, farmed, cut timber and began operating his seafood company in Hampstead around 1918, which later became J. H. Lea & Sons Inc. He and others fished the local waters and surrounding beaches. Later he purchased his own beach for fishing which is now known as Lea Island, located across the Intracoastal waterway from Salters Haven. His seafood business eventually ran multiple seafood routes, delivering to grocery stores and seafood markets throughout NC, SC, VA and GA with seafood collected from the entire east coast.

DID YOU KNOW: The road running along the north side of Salters Haven, Factory Road, is named after an old oyster factory that once sat at its end.

Since the local fishing in the early years was so seasonal, he did a lot of farming and purchased farmland whenever he could, one of those being the property that is now Salters Haven at Lea Marina.

Bert Lea Sr. at 16 years of age took over the family farms and on this beautiful property, raised beans, peanuts, cotton and corn all the way down to the water’s edge, where Pump Hole Creek ran 36

It was her way of sharing a little piece of what she called “paradise” with others.

The Lea Family always wanted others to enjoy this property and Lea Island as much as possible. When Julia Pearl Lea, J. H. Lea’s wife, discovered people had built weekend houses or camps on their island, she put notes on their doors creating contracts with each of the “tenants” and charged them one dollar a year. They all agreed and paid their dollar rent at the Fishhouse office annually.

When Bert Lea Sr. decided around 1968 to create Lea’s Waterfront Mobile Home Park on this property, he had and held great intentions for his land. The park was known for its perfect settings, snugged away by beautiful tall pines overlooking crystal clear water with modest rent so everyone could enjoy the breezy tranquil lifestyle that the Salters Haven property offers.

Bert Lea Jr. noted that his father would always tell him and his sisters, Dorothy and Judy, “never fall in love with a piece of property.” But they did, as they were constantly investing in maintaining the land and water to keep it as natural and beautiful as possible all their lives. They knew they couldn’t give this property up unless they were absolutely sure it was to the right person. They had numerous offers over the years that never felt right to them. It wasn’t the amount of money, it had to be the right person to keep the legacy going with respect for the land, water and the community of Hampstead. “It had to be the right person to keep the legacy going with respect for the land, water and the community of Hampstead.”

37 along the property. It was named that because water was pumped from there to clean oysters where an old oyster factory once stood; hence the name Factory Road, where Salters Haven sits today. After seven years of farming, Bert went to work with his father full time in the seafood business. With the advice of the NC Forestry Service, Bert decided to plant rows of pine trees all over the entire property.

That became a reality when Bert Jr. met D Logan. After three years of discussions about D’s plans to make this property an exceptional community, marina, and clubhouse, they knew their, their father’s and their grandfather’s land was in the right hands to carry on the legacy of the Lea Family at Salters Haven.

This time of year is ideal for fishing. (There’s really no downtime in our bountiful area when it comes to catching ‘the big one’.) Surf-fishing is on fire right now, with Black Drum, Bluefish, and Speckled Trout yours for the catching.

If wings are your thing, head out to our nearby marshes, waterways and islands and prepare to see the many migrating birds. See seagulls, hardy terns, and pelicans on the shore, and keep an eye out for of majestic herons and egrets as they fly over the inlets.

8 strips of bacon, cut into 1” segments

WARM, SOUTHERN COASTAL COOKING: Shrimp & Grits

1 green onion, chopped

Prep Time 25 Minutes

1/2 teaspoon paprika

Cook Time 30 Minutes

Sea salt to taste

36 oz (4 1/2 cups) chicken stock

Boil chicken stock. Add grits. Cook for 18 minutes. Stir often as the mixture cooks. Fry your chopped up bacon in a pan till done but still tender. Add in shallots and garlic and keep cooking for 3 more minutes—ahhh— smell that aroma! Spoon the bacon mixture out of pan. Reduce the pan’s heat to low and keep that bacon grease warm. Good things are Addcomin’...cream cheese and butter to the grits and turn it down to low. Stir till it’s creamy and well mixed. Add salt and pepper, then your bacon/garlic/shallots mixture. Mix it all in and let it sit for about 8 minutes, covered. Increase your bacon grease pan to medium/high. Once up to temperature, add the shrimp. Sprinkle in the paprika, salt and pepper and cook for about 3 minutes, stirring constantly.

4 oz cream cheese

Salters Haven ‘Pro tip’: For a sweet, savory twist, drizzle a teaspoon of warm maple syrup before serving.

Spoon grits into bowls. Then, scoop the cooked shrimp on top each bowl. Drizzle a little of the bacon pan grease for some extra Southern flavor!
