Often called ghyll (or gill) scrambling, gorge scrambling involves making your way UP a steep lakeland stream. Climbing around pools, jumping from rock to rock and scaling waterfalls, with jumps back into the deepest pools! There are dry, wet and really wet options available. This is the most popular activity in the area with trips all over the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales.

This is a variation of gorge scrambling but the direction of travel is DOWN rather than up. Lots of jumps and slides are involved, with waterfall abseils on the more advanced trips. Canyoning is a get-wet activity for those with a go-for-it attitude. The most popular trip is out of Keswick, with others available near Coniston and Sedbergh.

Explore the islands and bays of the many lakes. Either get the extra value of a guide who can awaken lost skills or go it alone in a hired sit-on-top boat. Sea kayaking or river trips are available depending on weather conditions. Canoeing: red indian type boats with a single bladed paddle. Kayaking: closed topped with a double bladed paddle.

With a stunning backdrop of fells and mountains sailing in the Lake District is an amazing experience. The country’s leading operator has fantastic courses at Grizedale and Whinlatter Forests (minimum age of 10). There are also many privately owned courses with instructor sessions for children aged as young as 8.

Serious Fun Gorge Scrambling has opened 6 new gorge scrambles on the edges of the Lake District, so you can avoid the crowds. Blackwater Rafting: Currently under development with The Dales Adventure Centre. This is a great new trip that gives you the opportunity to float through a flooded cave system in a padded inner tube. A willingness to get wet is necessary as the jumps, slides and scrambles require total commitment.

Another great new activity in the Lake District, this challenge uses similar tubes to the Black Water Rafting to tackle the white water of several of the bigger rivers, floating serenely down the calmest sections as you learn the skills to take on the bigger rapids with confidence.

Water Rollers and Water Walkers: The main craze for 2011 is the opportunity to walk on water. These inflatable balls and tubes can be found in sheltered locations on the main lakes, giving you the opportunity to run around like a mad idiot to everyone’s amusement.
