SYDNEY MELBOURNE GIPPSLAND
VICTORIA. AUSTRALIA 2
Be Inspired by Gippsland Gippsland is an extraordinarily diverse region, located to the east of Melbourne, and stretching all the way to the NSW border. The region announces itself with verdant hills, expansive coastline and inland waterways. It’s also known for its great food and wine, and a wide variety of wildlife. From Wilsons Promontory in the south, to Walhalla in the foothills of the alpine region of Victoria and across to the Gippsland Lakes and Mallacoota, the region stretches a breadth and width the size of Switzerland. There is so much to inspire the international visitor here, both in stunning nature-based experiences as well as attractions and food and wine. Gippsland offers the best route for self-drive visitors on the Sydney-Melbourne touring itinerary.
WILDLIFE EXPERIENCES, IN THE WILD See kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, koalas and emus in their natural environment of Australian coastal bushland eucalypt forests. Just three hours south east of Melbourne, Wilsons Promontory National Park is a haven for Australian wildlife. Watch kangaroos bounding through the bush or spot wombats ambling through the park looking for a feed around dusk and dawn. The alpine heathlands and Mountain Ash forests of the Baw Baw National Park are ideal for spotting wombats, wallabies and sugar gliders. The park is also home to the endangered leadbeater’s possum. The Gippsland Lakes abound with native bird and wildlife. Take a cruise and glimpse birdlife and kangaroos grazing by the water. In Metung, catch the feeding of the Australian pelicans daily at midday. Raymond Island, just off Paynesville’s shoreline, is home to a large koala colony and is one of the best places in Victoria to go koala spotting. Further east, native wildlife thrives in the pristine remoteness of Mallacoota and the Croajingolong National Park. View the large mob of local kangaroos at Gipsy Point, where the peninsula juts into the Mallacoota Inlet. There are over 280 species of bird in the area. Look for the white-bellied sea eagles by the coast, or lyrebirds and azure kingfishers as you stroll around Lyrebird Walk.

South Gippsland’s beautiful coastal landscape stretches from Phillip Island to the foothills of the Strzelecki Ranges, producing true, cool climate wines including elegant chardonnay, pinot gris, and pinot noir with superb flavour and structure. The region also produces excellent cheeses, grass-fed meat, craft beer in Mirboo North and locally distilled gin in Loch.

Discover world-class beaches with pristine white sand that squeaks beneath your feet. The Ninety Mile Beach is one of the longest uninterrupted stretches of beach in the world, with much of the beach isolated from townships you may well be the only people walking the sand as it stretches into the hazy distance.
If deserted beaches are on your wish list, explore the coastline of Croajingolong National Park near Mallacoota. The park encompasses 100 kilometres of coast and hinterland, where lush rainforests and towering eucalypts give way to rambling heathland and pure white sandy beaches, granite peaks and rocky coastal headlands. The beaches of Bass Coast stretch from Phillip Island to Inverloch in all their vast, windswept beauty. Ride or walk across the iconic trestle bridge at Kilcunda, snorkel the Bunurong Marine Park, or learn to surf.
Heading east, discover the vibrant dining scene of Traralgon at venues such as Little Prince and MOMO. This part of Gippsland is home to Narkoojee Winery, a multi award winning family owned winery providing wines of exemplary quality. A stop here is a must on any self-drive itinerary.

Central Gippsland
Located just over two hours east of Melbourne, Sale and the surrounding villages are the epicentre of Central Gippsland. The region presents some of Victoria’s greatest natural beauty, the perfect backdrop for the SydneyMelbourne touring route. The diverse landscape reaches from the rugged High Country surrounding the villages Dargo and Licola to one of the world’s longest beaches, Ninety Mile Beach. Central Gippsland is the gateway to the Gippsland Lakes, making Sale a must on the Melbourne to Sydney drive itinerary. With a bounty of wildlife, historical attractions, wilderness and great food and wine, the diversity of Central Gippsland is not to be missed.
TARRA BULGA NATIONAL PARK Tarra-Bulga National Park’s rainforest is nothing short of breathtaking, and boasts moss and fern covered ranges and flowing creeks. Located in the Strzelecki Ranges, giant Mountain Ash and Myrtle Beech create a majestic green ambience. A must-do visitor experience is to walk across the suspension bridge through the rainforest canopy, for spectacular views of the fern-filled gully. The bridge also provides visitors with the ideal photo opportunity. The walks in and around Tarra Bulga National Park are short and comfortable, and visitors might see or hear a Lyrebird or other native wildlife.
THE NINETY MILE BEACH From the shallow inlets near Port Albert to the open waterways of Lakes Entrance lies the Ninety Mile Beach – a 90 mile plus long stretch of pristine golden sand that separates the Gippsland Lakes from Bass Strait. This is one of the most natural and unspoilt beaches in the world and is ideal for any number of beach activities from beach fishing and swimming to walking, whale and dolphin-spotting or just lazing in the sun. The beach lies on the edge of a long slender sand dune and the absence of rocky outcrops or headlands results in a vista of endless sand that stretches as far as the eye can see. Offshore, the sandy plains are only occasionally broken by low ribbons of reef. The beach can be reached via the towns of Woodside Beach, Seaspray, Golden Beach or Loch Sport. Unspoilt and authentically Australian, these seaside towns create the perfect holiday location.

West Gippsland
More than just its mountain namesake, the Baw Baw region is the gateway to Gippsland from the west, an easy one-hour drive east of Melbourne. The region announces itself with rolling green pastureland and vineyards, producing some of Gippsland’s best celebrated pinot noir, nestled between the Baw Baw and Strzelecki Ranges. Visitors to the region explore the stunning beauty of Toorongo Falls, and stroll across Noojee Bridge, one of the only remaining historic trestle bridges in Victoria. A stop over in Walhalla is a must. Steeped in a rich gold mining history, Walhalla is now home to sixteen residents, and twice as many things to do, including riding the historic railway and visiting the old gold mine. In winter, visitors can take a snow break at Mt Baw Baw Alpine Resort, and enjoy some easy skiing, snow play or enjoy a Howling Husky sled dog tour. Baw Baw combines stunning scenery in and around the villages of Noojee, Walhalla and Yarragon.
WALHALLA Hidden in a steep sided valley, Walhalla is Gippsland’s most loved historical village. After gold was discovered, Walhalla thrived with over 4000 residents during the 1880s. Today, almost preserved in time, this charming village offers so much to the international visitor. Visitors can enjoy a scenic railway journey on the Walhalla Goldfields Railway or tour the Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mine. Walhalla’s iconic cemetery clings to the side of the hill at a 45 degree angle and the slopes are dotted with cottages built on narrow ledges cut into the steep hillsides. Walhalla is also home to one of Australia’s most interesting cricket ovals. Back in Walhalla’s heyday, flat land was at a premium so the solution for a sports field was to slice the top off a nearby mountain! Visitors can take the 1km walk up the zig-zag track to see if they can hit a six onto the roof of the Star Hotel. A visit in Autumn and Spring rewards guests with a palette of seasonal colour from the autumn leaves or the spring blossoms, creating the perfect backdrop for some stunning holiday snaps. Walhalla is a must-see destination on the SydneyMelbourne self-drive touring route.

Day 2: Elect to stay another day exploring more of the Park by land with Great Southern Escapes, or tranfer to Port Welshpool to board one of two cruise operators, Wildlife Coast Cruises or Refuge Cove Cruises. These cruises offer an opportunity to experience the pristine eastern side of The Prom, inaccessible by road.
By land: More time to explore the walks in the Park, taking in Darby River, the Big Drift sand dune or the little visited Millers Landing which showcases the abundant beauty of Corner Inlet, Australia’s southernmost mangrove system. Travelling with a small group tour, the guided interpretation of this remarkable National Park allows visitors to adopt the pace of nature.
Day 3: Today reverse day 2, returning to Melbourne in the evening.

By sea: Cruise from Port Welshpool provided on one of two vessels hugging the east coast of The Prom. Visit Rabbit Island, before travelling on to the southern most point of mainland Australia, an area otherwise only accessible by foot. See penguins feeding at sea, dolphins and visit the permanent seal colony of the Kanowna Islands. Between May and November, the cruises are an excellent opportunity to see whales on their annual migration. Experience the wild beauty of Skull Rock before the boat turns back to the sheltered Refuge Cove for lunch and a visit ashore.

Day 1: Travel to The Prom from your Melbourne accommodation with either Bunyip Tours or Great Southern Escapes. The dramatic and rugged granite mountains that form this remarkable National Park offer a natural habitat for the best of Australia’s fauna. Visitors regularly view wombats, wallabies, kangaroos, echidnas, possums and sometimes koalas. Depending on the weather, visitors on an escorted day tour will climb Mt Oberon for the postcard panorama of Australia’s southernmost mainland point. Alternative walks are just as spectacular, with views of pearly white sandy beaches and the fascinating cluster of Kanowna Islands. Head to Squeaky Beach to enjoy the quiet beauty of one of The Prom’s most spectacular beaches before overnighting at Tidal River in a Wilderness Retreat.
