“I reaffirm the necessity to give tourism a priority in the future development programme. This sector has great potential for growth and for making an effective contribution to economic diversification, since our dear country possesses such splendid tourist assets such as its historic heritage, natural beauty, perfect environment, folklore and traditional industries. In addition, there is the security, stability and the spirit of tolerance of the Omani citizens, thanks to God. The tourism industry is well qualified to offer career opportunities to Omanis. It is well capable of serving the aims of regional development, since its benefits will cover all regions. On this basis we should prepare a newstrategy to develop this sector so it can stand on its own feet in a severely competitive, flexible and diversified international market. Excerpted from the speech of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said on the occasion of the 29th National Day

Dear Reader, Publisher

We are delighted to present the 2017-2018 annual print edition of Destination Oman. This is edition also marks our thirteenth year into publishing Oman’s most sought after pictorial journal on tourism, that first came out in 2004. We’ve taken a new turn this year, like we do every time. Oman has so much to discover through its dunes, beaches and mountains, and it never fails to fascinate us.

We decided to explore the wildlife, the birds, and areas less talked about. Oman has a great diversity in terms of wildlife whether it is land or marine. Be it the sleek Arabian leopard on land, or the various types of turtles, dolphins and whales in the sea - the deeper you go, there is more to see. Going aerial, Sur deserves a mention. Sur is famous for being a favorite haunt for migratory birds and bird watchers. In our story on bird watching at Sur, we unravel the innumerous exotic varieties (we can boast of a good 39 species). It’s no surprise that bird-watchers from all over flock to these areas to observe these birds and get some stunning pictures too. We’ve taken to foot in many of our stories and you’ll find details of the trek through the old village of Wakan to the valleys in Mistal, close to the Western Hajar Mountains. We walked 700 steps through beautiful terraced gardens, along a falaj, straight to the watch tower for a sight that was as mesmerizing as the journey. Jebal Akdhar and Jebal Shams are also exciting trekking destinations that we have covered. Plus the dramatic scenery of Musandam and Salalah.

Photo Š Bait Al Zubair Muscat combines the charms of an old world Arab enclave with the amenities of a fast paced metropolis. Nestled between the turquoise blue waters of Gulf of Oman and the rugged mountains of AI Hajr Al Sharyi, here you will find a harmonious blend of traditional culture, cuisine, arts and architecture with the unbridled energy of modern life. No doubt, Muscat embodies the finest of the Middle East. Winter is the best time to visit Muscat. It sprinkles the city with a myraid of colours. Flowers and green plants pop up from nowhere painting the alleys and parks with a variety of colours. It is as though the spring has descended on the city sprinkling her floral possessions all around. It is nothing short of a lifetime’s delight to drive around the city in the winter months. There is no parallel to the scientifically constructed network of roads and artistically designed roundabouts and the structures that greet the visitor as he traverses across the city. On their way out of airport visitors will be greeted by artificial water cascade right across the airport, the Date Palm lined pavements of Al Azaiba, the colourful sculptures and figurines that dot the way, the shining domes of the mosques and the roundabout in Wadi Kabir. There is much more that pleases the eyes and fills the soul of a sightseer. The low lying buildings which are mostly painted in white and light colours merge beautifully with the pristine surroundings. A perennial serenity prevails in the city. After getting acquainted with the capital of Oman plan your trips to explore the interiors.

Al Jalali and Al Mirani Forts The forts of Al Jalali and Al Mirani which stand as sentinels at the entrance to Muscat bay are the city’s prominent landmarks built in 16 th century AD. Mirani, originally shaped like a tower was built before the arrival of the Portuguese. The Portuguese rebuilt it on the ruins of its old structure in 1588. The building was enlarged to its present size during the reign of Imam Ahmed bin Said, the founder of the Al Busaidi state in the 18th century, and his grandson Sayyid Said bin Sultan, at the beginning of the 19th century. The construction of Jalali Fort was completed by the Portuguese in 1587. It is rebuilt to its present structure during the reign of Sayyid Said bin Sultan, and this Fort was restored and converted into a museum in the reign of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said. Al Alam Palace The beautifully grandiose Al Alam Palace is the ceremonial palace of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said .Built in 1972 it has a fairytale facade of towering gold and blue pillars wrapped in wrought iron and edged in green. Visitors can approach it on foot via the Kebir Gate in the old city walls for best views. Though they are not allowed inside even the outside is impressive. Al Alam Palace is surrounded by the Mirani and Jalali Forts built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. Parks and gardens The parks and gardens in Muscat infuse life into the city that it is carved out of an arid and rocky landscape. It is as though the desert and mountains have bowed out to make way for the verdant magnificence. Apart from the floral beds and greenery that line the city

Photo © Deepak Nair roads, the parks and gardens give the city a dab of lushness. Qurum Natural Park opened in 1993 is the largest park in Muscat. It has a large boating lake, a fountain, waterfall hill and Sultan Qaboos’ Rose Garden as main attractions. The design exploits the nature and topography and creates a wonderful ambience to the visitors. Riyam and Kalbou parks are the most popular evening spots in the city. Overlooking the sea, they not only impress the visitors with their location, but also with their design and purpose. Riyam park provides a stunning view of harbour and sea cliffs. Here one can go on the numerous rides that rock the park in the evenings. While in Kalbou take a stroll or dip a line to catch fish. The sprawling Al Naseem Park, some 30 km away from the airport, the Quriyat Lake Park and the Rose garden in Qurum are also among the favourite picnic spots in and around Muscat. If you are interested to learn about the rich heritage of the Sultanate, drop into the four main museums in the city, which include the OmaniFrench Museum, Bait Al Zubair and and Bait Al Baranda. Omani French Museum The Omani-French museum operated by the Ministry of Heritage and Culture at Qasr Al Alam Street in old Muscat depicts the art and culture of France and the traditional connection of the Sultanate with the French people. The museum was initially the residence of French Consul and was known as Bait Faransa which means house of France. It was presented as a gift by the Sultan Faisal bin Turki to the first French Consul in Muscat

in 1896. It was opened on 29th January 1992 by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said and the late French President François Mitterrand. The museum displays furniture, clothes and photographs of the early French diplomats, and contains historical documents, and modles of Omani - French ships in addition to Omani and French costumes and jewellery. Bait al Zubair Museum The museum has one of the largest and finest private collections in Oman accumulated by the Al Zubair family. It displays over 5,000 specially selected or inherited pieces that reflect Oman’s rich cultural heritage and identity representing different periods of time. The collection includes customary Omani weaponry, jewellery, costume, household utensils and furniture, early European maps and prints of the Arabian Peninsula and East Africa, early photographs, satellite images, coins, stamps, musical instruments, documents, manuscripts and books. The Museum also features traditional Omani architecture, a falaj and traditional fishing vessels. Bait Al Baranda Visitors’ House The Bait Al Baranda visitors’ house is window to the past of Oman. The history of Oman from the time of formation of the landmass, the progress of human civilization to the achievements of modern Oman is portrayed here. Models of ancient cave houses, relics and detailed information on different ages are displayed here. The other important museums in the city include Museum of Omani Heritage located at Al Alam Street and operated by the ministry of heritage and culture, The National Museum

near Al Fallaj hotel Ruwi and the Children’s Museum at Shatti Al Qurum near the Qurum Natural Park . Beaches If beaches are your passion, then Muscat has some of the cleanest and most serene beaches in the world where you could relax after a busy schedule. Facilities for water sports including skiing, aqua biking and kayaking are available at some of the resorts. For the adventurous types there are a large number of Scuba diving centres in Muscat. While some of these beaches are within city limits, others are at some distance, but given the special attributes of these beaches, it is worth all your time to go there. The Aviation Beach in Al Azaiba and the Qurum beach are the closest from the city centre and they make excellent picnic and barbeque spots. If you happen to be at Qurum beach during a low tide and you are a beach stroller, then take a four km walk towards the stylish embassy area of Shati Al Qurum. Driving away from the city, climbing and descending mountain roads, you reach the Bandar Jissah and Qantab beaches. Near Qantab is a fishing village and once you hit the beach, local fishermen would offer to take you

fishing in the immaculate waters. Bandar Jissah is a rocky coastline and those with a penchant for small time adventure can climb the rocks at the foot of the cliffs when the tide is low. A little beyond this place is the Oman Dive Centre from where you can go on diving excursions or take your first lessons in under water exploits. Talking about beaches, one cannot ignore the coast beyond Qurriyat. Of the beaches that nestle between rocky outcrops, Mokallah captures prominence. A night out on the shore is what you can plan if you have this White Beach in your agenda. Head southeast from Muscat with your camping paraphernalia for a night under the sky. It would be the best way to unwind after a whirlwind tour of the capital. The Sawadi Beach which stretches past the Wilayat of Barka is one of the places where you can bring your spirit of adventure and love for leisure together. The Sawadi beach is strewn with seashells of unimaginable variety. You can take a boat ride around the little rocky islets sitting pretty at short distances from the shore. While you steer through, don’t miss to catch a glimpse of the coral reefs and the schools of fish in the shallow, gleaming waters. If the tide is low, you can wade across to the fort atop the cliff in the sea and behold the

16 12/20/17 12:03 PM

blue green expanse beyond. After this, get set for some brisk adventure. Ocean Extreme is a diving center attached to the Al Sawadi Resort close to the beach and it facilitates a wide range of water sports. If your craving for adventure is still not satiated, then go for the big one. Dimaniyat Islands Natural Reserve lies about 18 km from the coast and it is a fascinating world of marine and avian life. It is also one of the best dive centers in Oman. Since it is an area protected by law, it is mandatory to seek permission from the Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Environment before embarking on the trip. Muttrah Harbour and fish market Muttrah Harbour and fish market near Muttrah Corniche is one of the interesting sites that tourist love to stop by and watch the live activity of fishing boats coming home with their catch and fishermen selling their fresh catch. Muttrah Harbour is a circular, deep water, natural anchorage, where tankers, barges, ferries and cruise ships mingle with traditional Arab dhows. From early morning till 10 am each day the harbour is home to a bustling fish market where visitors can see, hear and smell the catch of the day from the rich marine life of the Arabian Sea being unloaded and sold.

You can see different types of boats and ships bringing loads of catch, with the birds flying around the sea side producing their beautiful voice. In side the market there is a vast selection of ocean-fresh fish, squid and crab to choose from. There are special areas where the cutting of the fish is done. The variety of different type of fishes in Oman sea gives an idea how Omani sea is rich of marine life. Shop in the Souq The Souq (market) in Muttrah is a landmark which any discerning tourist can ill afford to miss. Typical Omani souvenirs that range from the Khanjar (the curved dagger), and silver jewellery to spices, frankincense garments and household items are available here. Bargaining is the norm. Apart from the unique shopping experience, what will enchant you are the ambience and the structure of the Souq that reflect distinctive Arabic tradition. The tall arch that frames the entrance and the canopied roof made of palm fronds takes to a time and place from the Arabian Nights. For a leisurely shopping stroll, it is best to visit the Souq in the mornings or late afternoons when the crowd is minimal. The place gets busy after six in the evening.

The Sultanate of Oman is popular with bird watchers in the Arabian Gulf region. More than 460 different bird species have been recorded in Oman, out of which, 80 species have been classified as resident, while the rest are migrant and seasonal species. Oman offers a unique opportunity to watch birds from Europe, Africa and Asia in one spot, during their annual migrations in spring and autumn. These migratory periods coincide with the cooler weather in Oman, between October and April. Some of the common resident species one expects to see include: herons (striated and western reef), ospreys, doves,

Egyptian vultures, and Indian roller. Common migrant and seasonal species include: cattle egret, little stint, greater flamingo, caspian gull, grey heron, dunlin, terns, red and green shanks, ruff and white wagtail. There is an array of bird watching sites in most parts of the country, such as Musandam, Al-Wusta Region, Masirah Island, Damaniyat islands and Dhofar, apart from monsoon soaked Salalah and the Bar Al Hikman. Sharqiya region of Oman attracts tourists for its very famous and well known destinations like Sink Hole, Wadi Shab, Sur and further to Ras Al Hadd for its beaches and turtle watching.

19 75096 inner.indd 19

2017 - 18 12/20/17 12:03 PM

The principal route into Sharqiya follows the coastal highway from Muscat south to Quriyat and Sur, with the Arabian Gulf on one side and the rugged summits of the Eastern Hajar on the other. Attractions here feature an interesting blend of the historical and the natural, including the old fort of Quriyat and the ruined city of Qalhat, along with Wadi Shab and Wadi Tiwi, two of Oman’s most scenic wadis. And, then comes Sur, the historic centre of Oman’s famous ship-building industry, and the turtle beach at Ras Al Jinz. The picturesque seaside town of Sur, with its local fishing boats, souks, castles and museums, is a great base for exploring Oman’s rich maritime history .In addition to its attractions, Sur is a convenient base for day trips to Wadi Tiwi and Wadi Shab and the turtle reserve at Ras al Jinz. It also makes a good halfway rest point on a round trip from Muscat via the desert camps of the Sharqiya Sands. Dwarfed among the giant tourist attractions of the region are the winged residents and guests of Oman i.e. Birds of the region. It is definitely worth scheduling exclusive time for some serious and casual bird watching all along the routes from Quriyat to Ras Al Hadd, via the birding spots along the water bodies at Wadi Tiwi, Sur (The creek at Sur and Alayjah), and along the beaches of Sur, Ras Al Hadd, and on way to Ras Al hadd at khawr Grama (Jirama) and the creek at Ras Al Hadd.

Found in the creek of Wadi Tiwi are colonies of cormorants during the season along with grey herons, egrets, river terns sitting along the water shores basking in the sun catching the little fish in the water. The king fishers, blue jays, bulbuls plays hide and seek in the trees lining the wadis and along the road. The pond herons are busy looking for the insects in the greens on the earth. Along the coastal road one can see the ospreys, Egyptian vultures hovering around the sky looking for the dead and into the thrown away perishing eatables.

ponds. Wagtails and green bee eater sit on the dried stems of the bushes looking for the small insects.

At Sur many of the birds can be found in the waste effluent disposal ponds located on the Bilad to Quriyat route. Often found are flamingos in huge number dwarfing the many other species of birds that can be found here. The ever noisy alerting birds like black winged stilts, ibis, terns, ducks like mallard, sandpipers, and shanks thrive here. Little grebe and moorhen survive in the dark interiors of the dense water plants growing on the side

The creek at the Alayjah and Sur is vast and brings in lot of backwaters during the high tides and leaves back wet slushy water bodies which are a haven to many flocks of flamingos, little stints, herons and egrets. The beach of Sur is aplenty with different types of sea gulls with all the noises they make like grunt, squawk, laugh, cry, and hoot.

Ras Al Hadd about 45 kms from Sur offers beaches and very well-known turtle centre at Ras Al Jinz. The creek at Ras Al hadd along the road leading to the Ras Al hadd beach hotel is dotted with sea gulls, sanderlings and herons. The other side of the creek along the road to the turtle beach resort has mangroves grown along the sides which provides a safe environment for many birds like Eurasian curlew, herons, Godwits, Crab Plovers. If lucky one can see flocks of birds flying over or landing on the shallow water of the creek during their migration journey. The joy of bird watching, bird photography comes from the passion to look out for birds, studying their migration and dwelling pattern, their habitats and close monitoring. For a serious bird watcher, the regions offers immense potential and for the casual visitor they can never miss the moments to see the birds in action, if

2017 - 18 75096 inner.indd 22

they develop an eye to see the little winged creatures doting all along the water bodies of the area. Best time to visit Oman for birding is from October to February. Next time when u visit this region to see and immerse in the sights of the historic monuments, beaches, gorgeous valleys and nesting turtles, please have an eye to the little winged guests/creatures which makes the place all the more beautiful and in its nature best. If beauty has an address in Oman, we can very well say that birds have an address at Sur in Oman Happy birding.

TREKKING IN OMAN Text & Pictures: Anna Katz

As I write this piece, it’s been two-and-a-half weeks since I returned home and still suffering from Oman withdrawal symptoms. It’s funny because Oman was the trip that almost didn’t happen, it was the compromise when my plans for trekking Patagonia in South America, fell through. Like most people, it wasn’t that I thought anything bad about Oman really, rather, I just never thought anything about Oman at all. Now I feel like all I do is day dream about returning. Landscapes as varied as desert mountains to lush oases and crashing seas, challenging hikes, warm breezes, amazing food, friendly people, uncrowded trails, and crazy feral goats are just a handful of reasons why Oman should be your next destination for an outdoor adventure.

2017 - 18 75096 inner.indd 24

My first and foremost concern when choosing a place for trekking is, unsurprisingly, the mountains and their trails. Are they high enough? Challenging enough? Are there mapped out trails? I really had no idea what to expect. Happily, the answer to all three questions is yes. While true the Hajar mountain range of Oman is not the Himalayas, there are many routes that through the elevation gains and technical aspects are enough to challenge even the fittest of trekkers. My favourite hike was the round trip walk at Wukan (route W25, W24a, and W24b), with over 1000m in elevation change. The terrain always seems to change just as you are starting to get complacent. In the shade of the mountains we passed by stray goats, hanging gardens, and crumbling watch towers of old as we hiked away from the terraced mountain village of Wukan.

24 12/20/17 12:03 PM

At times we were forced to scramble over rocks, sometimes even bouldering and climbing. Even after coming down from the higher elevations the trail still had plenty to throw at us. Dizzyingly steep crevasses stood between us and our car, with the trail cutting horizontally right through the middle of all of them. With the footing alternating between loose gravel and sand and sharp glass-like rocks, we sometimes were forced to slip and slide down the wicked hills. Trekkers bring your poles for this one! But as wild and remote as the Wukan trail is, it and all the other ones we hiked, were meticulously marked. Fresh paint at very regular intervals was a welcome surprise. The people of Oman and the tourists we ran into were unfailingly polite, friendly, and eager to help. But to be honest, outside of towns and markets we were happily surprised how few people we ran into. The trails were remarkably quiet and uncrowded. With the few exceptions of some of the easier to reach wadis along the coast, we were alone or nearly alone on almost all of our treks, (if you don’t count the goats, whose night time activities can give you a quite a start). This also made for some really wonderful and private camping. Wild camping is permitted nearly everywhere in Oman. There is no hotel on earth that can compare to some of the secluded and bewitching places that we pitched our tent. We slept every night under the most incredible blanket of stars. High on a mountain pass we camped in a small rocky hollow. The night was silent and a slight breeze moved the XIRX ƽET KIRXP] ;I WEX UYMIXP] ERH watched the stars move across the sky till tiredness drove us to bed.

25 75096 inner.indd 25

2017 - 18 12/20/17 12:03 PM

We made camp on a sandy ledge overlooking the crystal waters of Wadi Bani Kahled while goats rustled in the rocks just beyond sight in the darkness. Or perhaps better still were the nights on Tiwi Beach with a small GVEGOPMRK ƼVI ERH XLI WSYRH SJ XLI [EZIW GVEWLMRK MRXS the sand just meters from our sleeping bags. And just as lovely as the nights were the quiet mornings with a cup of coffee watching the sun rise up over the mountains or sea. Slowly packing up then moving off down the trail together in search of the next place to call home for the night. The simplicity of life on the trail, the physical demands and jaw-dropping beauty of the surroundings make for almost meditative like conditions. By removing the distractions of our day to day lives that come in such forms as emails, bills, internet, and more, and replacing them with more corporeal needs, e.g. hot, cold, tired, hungry,

It seemed unreal to me that a place of such beauty existed beyond postcards and travel books. The wonders of this world never cease to amaze me. Standing in the warm and impossibly blue waters of Wadi Al Arbiyyin, I felt as if I had been transported into a story, plunked down into someone’s impossible fantasy of a primordial paradise. It was here that the phrase ƈFVIEXL XEOMRKƉ GIEWIH XS FI ƼKYVEXMZI 3R SYV [E] YT XS the summit of Oman’s highest peak, Jebel Shams, we again lost our breath, and nearly our lunch, as we held each other’s hand and leaned out over edge of cliffs staring into the 1000+ meters of empty space between us and the ground. I washed my sweat and the dirt of the mountain off in the sea and, with aching muscles, I fell asleep to the sound of the surf meeting the sand.

26 12/20/17 12:03 PM

Sitting now in my kitchen in Hamburg, sometimes it’s hard to stay here in the present. With no effort at all I am back climbing in the blinding sunlight across rocks and boulders up a silent mountain pass, the only sound is my boots crunching stones and my breath. I can feel the light wind cooling the sweat on my skin and swirling in my hair. I see hawks drifting lazily above me on an updraft. The Wakan village sits at 2,000 meters above sea level in Wadi Mistal in the Wilayat of Nakhal, located in Al Batinah South Governorate. It is located at a distance of about 150 km from Muscat, and approximately 50 km away from Nakhal by taking the turn to Wadi Mistal on the Nakhal-Awabi road. The paved road continues for a few kilometres before turning to graded road. The graded road leads up to Al Ghubrah Bowl, which also contains signs to the various villages in the area. From here Wakan village can be seen high up in the mountains. The path to Wakan is on a narrow and steep mountainous road and should only be attempted in a 4WD car.

The road leading to the village passes through a number of valleys where the villages can only be reached by a four-wheel-drive vehicle, and confidence for driving the especially the last stretch of 2.5 km off-road with deep cliffs on one side. If you don’t have a 4wd, you may be able to get some locals offering transport through offroad (not guaranteed) for about OMR 20 to OMR 25 for a round trip. You can search for them in the parking areas available before the start of the off-road. This region enjoys moderate temperatures in summer

of the village and the valley, and more layered plantations in season. You will always get a nice weather compared to the Muscat weather. It will take about 1 to 1.5 hours to see the whole place. After reaching the end of the steps you can collect the water and even drink it. You can find some nice rock structure views on top. There are trekking paths beyond this point, probably you may find the source of the water stream and end up in Jabal al Akhdar if you trek for few hours. There is an adjacent village known as al Qoura village, which is visible from the top of Wakan. You can try visiting this village too, the road to this village is in the beginning of off-road. There is no special path made for tourists as in wakan, informed by a local. The inhabitants of Wakan rely on farming and agriculture for their livelihood and the first thing you will notice once you reach Wakan is the beautiful terraced gardens which are used to cultivate pomegranates, apricots, grapes and other produce. Depending on the season, you may have the experience of seeing beautiful apricot flowers in full bloom and the butterflies feeding on them. However, please should remember not to pick any fruits and vegetables as the villagers depend on them for their livelihood. Please also note that you should stick with the designated path when exploring the village and its surroundings, as the tracks pass through villagers homes and their privacy should be respected. Places To Stay Only villagers live up in Wakan and we doubt there are any guesthouses/hostels in the tiny village! Best to go there on a day trip while also exploring Nakhal/Al Rustaq area! Getting there Take Route 1 towards Barka and exit at the turn off for Route 13. Pass through Nakhal and the turn for Wakan will be on your right approximately 13km down the road. Once you get close to Wakan you will need a 4Ă—4 because the path is treacherously steep with sharp curves.

A WORLD AWAY FROM HOME Text Courtesy: The Duncan Adventures

“It’s a world away from home, but am loving every minute it,” says Heather Duncan, a Scottish Expat living in Oman. Heather introduces us into her crazy world of adventures, blogging and embracing a new way of life in the Sultanate of Oman Landing in Muscat, Oman with just two suitcases in tow and no idea what the future held I questioned my decision to follow my new husband from my life in Scotland to the unknown in the Middle East. Seeing his face waiting for me in the arrivals hall I felt a sigh of relief, how was I ever going to tell a

2017 - 18 75096 inner.indd 32

taxi where to go if I didn’t know myself? By this point we had been married for just three weeks and seen each other for only 3 days of that when he flew back to Oman to begin his new job. The plan was for me to follow and be the tag along wife. Living in a new country with no friends was a scary prospect but it is sink or swim. Not one to stay down for too long, I began driving around the city and exploring. Gradually venturing further and further.

The Middle East sometimes gets a bad representation in the media of the Western World, of course my family had their hesitation’s over safety and what to expect. It was exhausting answering the same questions over again and reassuring them that I was perfectly safe – I began writing a blog page, The Duncan Adventures, to write home and tell them my tales and show photos of my new life and the fun I was having. It became a kind of therapy in those early days and a way to meet new people and it gave me the push to make my life more interesting, or I would have no content to write about. This gave me the drive to discover passions that I never knew I had inside me. I found myself trying out new camera equipment, looking up maps to reach new places, meeting exciting new people. I have been able to grow and develop as a person

2017 - 18 75096 inner.indd 34

and for which I will be eternally grateful to my husband for bringing me on this journey, that I was initially hesitant to agree to. During my adventure-packed five years in Oman there have been a couple of significant locations in Oman that will never leave my memory. The first being Wadi Arbeen. Heading into the Wadi in search of the illusive ‘secret waterfall’ I had no idea just how difficult this hike would be as we hauled our bodies up rock faces and teetered on the edge of precarious cliffs. The journey was intense but by far the most beautiful and un spoilt place I have ever visited in Oman. The crystal-clear wadi pools and endless rocky ledges were an amazing experience without any sign of human interference. The second location is forever in my mind and the place I always wish to run to when I’ve had a bad

34 12/20/17 12:03 PM

day – Jebal Akhdar. There is just something so soothing about the peace and tranquility of the mountains that eases my soul, and Oman has every element to do that. Aside from locations alone, my favourite and most thrilling experience to date is being able to fly in a paramotor high above the Sawadi coastline with the great guys from Sky School Oman. Being strapped into something that resembles a lawnmower in the sky is a crazy experience but something new and exciting to me! Oman is beautiful from the land but seeing it from above is a whole new experience and one that I wish to try again when the winter season comes round again. Climbing trees and rolling in the dirt seems to run in the family, Now that my son is almost 4 years old he has also developed a real passion for the outdoors life. Beach trips, scrambling rocks and adventures are always high on our agenda. Living in a country where kids can play freely outdoors is a very important thing for me. Growing up in Scotland we played outdoors with friends from sunrise to sunset. In the summer months we only went indoors to get food and run back outdoors again – these are golden memories for me and I strive to give my child the opportunity to thrive and grow

away from TV and iPad where possible. As for the ‘tag along wife’ I don’t think I managed to fit into that box that my husband assumed I would. I don’t bake him treats or iron his clothes – he barely sees me as I’m running out the door with my snorkeling gear and a kayak strapped to the car. But, this could be the secret to a happy marriage – if you both follow your passions you will always have something to tell each other when you finally sit down and have dinner together. Just a shame he doesn’t want to join me at altitude. What does the future hold? On a personal level, I am planning more mountain trips & improving my fitness for my next adventure challenges. For our family, as expats, our lives are transient and we don’t know where the next wave of job opportunities will take us – I pray that our time in Oman doesn’t come to an end any time soon. There are still so many wadis to explore, hills to climb and people to meet. All I can hope for the future is that wherever we end up that it allows us to have even half the amazing experiences that Oman has treated us to. BAIT AL SAFAH THE LIVING MUSEUM Text & Pictures: Charishma Thankappan

Meandering through the slim lanes of Al Hamra village

is like an experience in time travel where one reaches in to the history of Oman several centuries ago. In a village that lies on the brink of extinction, lies a marvel that has preserved the culture of Oman from the days of yore. Situated on the outskirts of Nizwa, in the Dakhiliya region, is a precious cultural legacy - the Bait al Safah. A glorious structure that was once the home of the ruler of the village - the sheikh - the mansion has been converted into a museum that displays the past practices and way of life in Al Hamra. Constructed during the time of Al Ya’ariba, the abode is owned and currently maintained by Sheikh Sulaiman Said Zahran al Abri, who inherited it from his forebears.

2017 - 18 75096 inner.indd 36

Dating back to about 400 years, most of the houses in the hamlet are but dilapidated vestiges of the times gone by. There are very few houses which continue to be occupied today, of which the best preserved is Bait al Safah. A visit to the Bait al Safah is a rewarding experience in acquainting with the authentic Omani culture and customs where the inhabitants exhibit the traditional ways of their daily routines. It is for this reason that the building has acquired the moniker of the ‘living museum’. When you enter the village, signboards direct the course towards the museum. A board that is conspicuous with the weight of time proudly presents the name Bait al Safah near the green-coloured door at the entryway of the house. Inside, another board leads to the reception.

36 12/20/17 12:04 PM

The impressive building, constructed entirely of date palm leaves, mud, and straw, is organised at two levels. A receiving space for visitors, an area with a loom that demonstrates the original method of weaving Omani carpets, and a store room comprise the ground floor. A slender mud staircase bedecked with a handsomely woven customary Omani red carpet navigates the passage to the upper floor. Six rooms welcome the guests at this level, each of which gives a peek into the different elements of the daily life of the people centuries ago. The floor consists of a long dining room. A bedroom with an arrangement of classical Omani dresses for women and men invites visitors to wear them and take

photographs in them. It also has a charming traditional wooden swinging cradle with a doll. Two other store rooms and a kitchen constitute the rest of the arena at this level. Yet, the life of the house, where the real activity takes place is in another location. Descending from the first floor, one enters a larger kitchen space. One is immediately pulled in by the allure and rustic appeal of the room. Wide bars of resplendent sunlight flood down from the slatted roof, lending the room a fascinating exquisiteness. Like a spotlight, the sunbeams fall upon a woman working at a grinding stone. She is drawing oil from the seeds of the herb shua, which grows extensively in Al Hamra.

37 75096 inner.indd 37

2017 - 18 12/20/17 12:04 PM

The method requires soaking the seeds in water, then grinding them to a paste and kneading them with hands till the oil is extracted. She then gathers the oil with a spoon and transfers it into glass bottles. This oil is used for both medicative and cosmetic purposes. It can be internally consumed to treat ailments of the stomach and can be topically applied to bruises and injuries. The oil is also a favourite among women for its moisturising characteristics and augmenting the natural radiance and complexion of the skin. After the oil is derived out of the green herbal mass, the remaining dough-like lump is used to mould into toys and figurines for children as it becomes hard after drying. Next to the grinding stone, another woman sits at a traditional hand-mill which is used to powder wheat. She invites the curious tourists, who look on in surprise, to try their hand at spinning the wheel and grind the coarse grains. After the wheat is ground, collects the flour and takes it to a fire stove burning nearby to make traditional Omani bread. The flour is mixed with salt and water to form a wet, semi-liquid paste. The woman then uses her hand to deftly spread a handful of the dough on a

2017 - 18 75096 inner.indd 38

hot flat iron pan. It is spread to a very thin consistency and cooked till both sides have browned and become crispy. The woman fans the flames with a dried palm frond, after which she scoops out the cooked thin sheet of bread. The iron pan is wiped clean of all fragments, before a new handful of the dough is spread again. Tourists are given a taste of this bread. At another corner of the kitchen, an aged man is roasting coffee beans. He then powders the beans with a pestle and mortar, and the powder is passed around to the bystanders to get a whiff of the fragrance. The man then proceeds to brew the coffee into piping hot kahwa. Cosmetic and medicative mixtures of sandalwood and saffron powders, used by women as face masks, are also presented. It is beneficial for its cooling features and in boosting the colour and texture of the complexion. As a sample, the women applied a little paste on the foreheads of the guests. Straw baskets with small bottles of the freshly made oils, the powders, and colourful handmade threads used as accessories were also displayed for sale. The many

38 12/20/17 12:04 PM

hued gilded threads were earlier used to sew into the hems of women’s dresses, and are now used as accessories to tie on the wrists. As the kitchen grows hot with the fumes from the fires, the visitors are led to the dining room. A long majlis style preparation receives the tourists, who are served the freshly brewed kahwa and fine Omani dates. The walls of the room are decorated with photographs of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said and his father, from various stages of their lives, along with pictures of the museum itself. But the image that really catches the eye is of a family tree that lists out, in Arabic, the names of the people from various generations of the family of the owner, Sheikh Abri. A small exit on this level conducts the way upstairs to the terrace, which allows striking glimpses of the village. The rest of the area inside the museum exhibits traditional artefacts such as ancient water bags made of camel hide; earthen pots to store water, hung from coir ropes; traditional Omani weighing scales made of wick-

er baskets; battered tin trunks that were used for storage several ages ago; antique lanterns, vintage wooden yokes used on cattle while ploughing; and age-old cane wood furniture. The edifice, being made of mud, feels cool throughout and is well-lit and well ventilated. The hospitality of the people is extraordinary, as they invite visitors with affection and enthusiasm. Members of the younger generation of the family of Sheikh Abri act as guides who take the tourists through the museum, explaining the nuances of the heritage. While the elderly man and women in the kitchen are unable to converse in English, it is the perpetual smile on their faces and the profound cordiality and kindness that they lavish in their mannerisms that steal the hearts of the guests who throng Bait al Safah. A visit to the ‘living museum’ is a truly satisfying experience as one returns with fond memories of an almost dead culture that is dearly kept alive by the prudent endeavours of Sheikh Abri and his family.

SALALAH

THE LAND OF VERDANT GREENERY Text : Charishma Thankappan Photography : Deepak Nair / Jaap Croese

When one thinks about the Middle East, one pictures

the extreme heat and arid deserts. Yet, it is little known that Oman is the exception to this commonly perceived notion, as the actual desert cover in the country is very small. The reddish-golden sands of Rub’ al Khali, the largest contiguous desert in the world, shares only a tiny area in the Oman-Saudi Arabia border. And the Wahiba sands to the north-east of Oman are also too limited to enable the entire country to be called a desert nation. Therefore, contrary to popular notion, the Sultanate of Oman is the only country in the Gulf of Middle East that has a more equable climate. The geography of the coun-

2017 - 18 75096 inner.indd 44

try is such that it has hill stations such as Jebel Shams and Jebel Akhdar in the north that are cool throughout the year; and the Dhofar region in the south, that experiences rainfall and cool climes during the summers. The latter, is thus, a summer retreat for people from the entire Gulf region, who escape there to beat the harsh heat. Salalah Located at a distance of 1,010km from the capital city of Muscat, Salalah is the capital of the Dhofar governorate in the south of Oman. Come Khareef season, and the place is a busy hotspot of tourists from all around the country and the Middle East itself. This is thanks to the constant rainfall that transforms the otherwise

44 12/20/17 12:04 PM

hot and humid place during the rest of the year, to a lush and verdant hill state for a period of three months from July to September. Travelling by road from Muscat to Salalah can be a daunting experience as you have to sit through a journey of 12 hours. You can either travel by bus or drive down, though the latter is advisable only if you are in a big group of good company to keep the driver awake throughout the unending straight road with practically zero scenic views along the entire stretch! On an overnight journey, it is in the early morning that the spirit of Salalah starts kicking in as one enters Thumrait and is greeted with a blanket of mist. The topography metamorphoses from unending boundless expanses of empty vastness to gentle rolling green Dhofar Mountains. The rod-like straight road suddenly starts meandering, and groups of grazing camels dot the sides of the road. The beauty of Salalah lies in its capacity to offer varied and diverse sights and sounds of nature. Replete with sensuous leafy hills and turquoise beaches, the capital of Dhofar presents the best of both worlds. Here are some of the choicest destinations around Salalah to give you a profoundly satisfying summer vacation: Al Mughsayl A picture-perfect landscape that is a photographer’s delight, Mughsayl affords breathtaking views of lofty mountains kissed by raucous waves lapping at its feet. It is a much sought-after attraction among the crowds and during the peak season it is flooded with people. A perfect picnic spot for families and large groups. It is known for its blowholes, which are gaps in the rocks through which water from the sea shoots up due to air pressure. Stand on top of the slatted covers and get drenched in the fountain of water!

amaze you with its gravity defying characteristic. Aptly named, the place is a sloped road where you can witness your vehicle move up the incline by itself, when the vehicle is either in the neutral gear or even if the ignition is off.

Fazayah Beach At a distance of 16km from Mughsayl, on the way to Dalkut, lies a gem of a hidden secret. A sharp downward turn to the left from the main road leads a 6km graded road. The journey down the path itself is mesmerising as it allows fascinating sights of mountains and rocks. Don’t be surprised if the course to the beach seems much longer as you lose yourself to the charming surroundings.

Tip: The anti-gravity effect gets reduced when there are a lot of vehicles, so try getting a spot on that road when it’s less crowded. It also gives you more distance and time to enjoy.

Fazayah is one of the most exquisite beaches in Dhofar. A rocky beach, the shore is littered with boulders of all sizes. Giant rocks can be tempting for climbers, while the not so adventurous would love to dangle their legs from smaller perches watching the cerulean waters. Get enchanted by the dazzling visions of the mountains from the shore. During the rainy season, the sea can become quite rough at this beach and one must therefore exercise great caution in venturing into the waters. Time required: Two to three hours To visit or not: You will feel blessed to have experienced this place! Not to be missed!! Magnetic Point A recommended spot on almost all tourist itineraries to Salalah, the magnetic point is a spot that will actually

Time required: 20 minutes To visit or not: It is a one-time visit that doesn’t require much time. Squeeze it in your trip to Mughsayl/Fazayah. Tawi Ateer This place is pure magic! Nothing else befits its description for its ability to transport you into another world altogether where you forget where you came from! Enter sprawling meadows shrouded in thick fog that envelopes you and makes you lose in its bewitchment. The silhouetted trees provide a surreal backdrop and lend an almost ghostly and eerie delight. At peak rainy season, the sun is almost blocked out as you find yourself wrapped in a silent forest-like atmosphere. However, beware of the ground you tread upon as it will be sopping wet and marshy with wet mud, so arm your feet in gum boots or water-resistant sturdy footwear. The place also harbours another enigma – a sinkhole. While the Bimmah sinkhole near Muscat is the most renowned sinkhole in the country, this lesser known

sibling in Salalah is no less in its allurement. Concealed in a jungle of trees and greens, a narrow adventurous trekking path leads to the gorgeous geographic feature. Time required: Two to three hours To visit or not: A definite unforgettable visit on your itinerary. Dalkut Embark upon one of the most magnificent road-trips in Oman – the ride from Salalah to Dalkut up to the Yemeni border. Covering a distance of over 165kms, the fine roads lead through distinct marvellous landscapes. The expedition passes through coastlines, rolling hills, open fields, deserts, and canyons. One of the best locations is when you pass through the serpentine hairpin bends of the splendid mountain passes. This is where you get up close with the stunning textures of the mountains and get a superb perspective of the canyon. As you edge closer to Dalkut, be prepared to be swallowed by super thick fog that will slow you down tremendously as you won’t be able to see even the headlights of the oncoming vehicles till they are too close. Use fog lights and horns generously at this stretch. Entering Dalkut, you will again feel transferred to another land as you find yourself surrounded by wild greenery. A tiny hamlet, Dalkut extends admirable views of the ample sea from its hill tops. Time required: Requires a whole day. Upto three hours journey by road to reach Dalkut from Salalah. Spend upto three hours as picnic and exploring at Dalkut. To visit or not: It is a highly satisfying experience for those who love road trips. There is not much to do or

see at the destination – Dalkut – itself, as it is the odyssey that is more profitable. Set out with fully charged cameras and be prepared to take videos! Wadi Darbat The closest getaway from the town centre of Salalah – Wadi Darbat gives pleasing prospects of nature at its best during the rains. Blanketed in velvety green, it is an ideal picnic spot for families and large groups. It also provides great camping nooks for backpackers. Quaint boulevards, a luscious lake, and verdant meadows welcome travellers weary from the summer heat. Important: Beware of insects and mosquitoes that abound in the rainy season that can hamper your enjoyment; so immerse yourself completely with mosquitorepellent creams and sprays before coming! Time required: Upto three hours or half a day if you plan to picnic or barbecue To visit or not: A definite spot on the itinerary. Samhurum Archaeological Park Take a break from the natural beauty and visit this archaeological elegance. The Samhurum Archaeological Park contains the remnants of the palace of the Queen of Sheba. It is also of historical importance as it lies on the historical path of the frankincense trail. Visit the Archaeological museum at the end of the trail. Also make time to splash around in the small sliver of the beach nearby. Time required: Three to four hours To visit or not: An intriguing experience for history buffs. Recommended to others as well.

BEACH THERAPY AT SALALAH Text & Pictures: Upasna Venaik

Salalah has been blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The beauty of the beach lies in the blue jewel color of the sea, smooth sand, ample of sunshine and most important cleanliness. Beach is a source of instant happiness. No matter where are you are travelling from, the sight of blue ocean fills up with immense pleasure. As they say let the waves hit your feet and the sand be your seat. So set yourself for a trip to Salalah, to embrace your solitude with the sight of setting sun on an empty beach. Salalah is the capital and seat of the wali (governor) of the southern Omani province of Dhofar. It is also the second largest city in the Sultanate of Oman, and the largest city in the Dhofar Province. It is

2017 - 18 75096 inner.indd 48

the birthplace of the Sultan Qaboos Bin Said. Salalah is a well known tourist destination in gulf, especially during the season of Khareef from june to September. It’s a wonderland in short. I’m currently based in Salalah so have been lucky enough to witness all the seasons of this place. The geography of this region is such that Salalah has its own microclimate, so the weather is generally pleasant here, currently 33 degrees in the month of April unlike in other parts of Oman or gulf. The sky is clear here, applying a sunscreen is always advisable. The beaches in Salalah are hardly commercial and that is how you can enjoy a picnic time. Just you and your family and nature by your side. My advice would be to visit these beaches around the time of sunset so can enjoy the beautiful color of the sky and its reflection on the sea as well. Depending on how

48 12/20/17 12:04 PM

much the distance is from your place, plan your journey in advance. Out of the four beaches I have mentioned Al Fazayah is the farthest from the main city. Al Mughsayl The drive to Mughsayl beach is one of its kinds, with the blue colored ocean on one side and huge mountains on the other side. On your way you will get to see Limestone Mountains and the roller coaster roads are itself a thrill. This is something to be experienced; the words will only fail you. The sea remains out of sight until a few kilometers before Mughsayl when road and water finally walk alongside, offering a view seen in movies generally. Mughsayl beach is a stretch of around four to six kilometers. You can stop at any of the spot you like and take a dip in the blue jewel water. You will also enjoy the variety of pebbles you get to see here or you can drive upto Al Maha petrol station and take a left turn opposite to it down the road signed Al marneef cave. If you plan to walk your way up to Al –Marneef caves, you can admire the spectacular view of the ocean. The view leaves you with an awakening how small we are in the vastness of this unseen world. On your one side will be dark Blue Ocean and on the other side the varied shape of overhanging rocks and caves that will leave you wonderstruck. To me the shape of the rock appears to be like a wolf staring at the ocean with his big eyes, may be keeping it protected. Walk a little more to witness the Al Mughsayl’s famous blowholes at the west side of the marnif. If you get lucky enough you could witness the thunder of the ground and streaming jets of seawater several meters in height to your surprise. They are pretty impressive during khaeef season. Moving more north you will enjoy the

picturesque sea cliffs. Check the picture gallery to appreciate the beauty of this place. The place has many shelters for you to relax and even barbeque if you want. Drive to Al Mughsayl beach could be anywhere from 30 minutes to 45 minutes from the main city. Better to carry your resident card or passport as you might have police checking on your way. It is also better to carry some extra clothes, mat, slippers and food items whenever you are planning to travel long distance. Although this beach is well developed with many eateries and a cafe around but carrying the above mentioned stuff will prove to be handy. Mobile network isn’t an issue here. As they say for Al Mughsayl: take nothing but memories, leave nothing but your footprints. Al Fazayah Beach If you have love for driving you can even choose to travel ahead to check even more beautiful beach of salalah Al Fazayah Beach. The drive to Al Fazayah is about another half an hour from Mughsayl Beach. The roller coaster drive will only leave you in trance and once you will reach the beach itself, you will never forget the dip of your feet in the softest white sand of the world. Such a treasure hunt this beach is in itself. But it’s advisable to make your way back at or before sunset, for it gets really dark and mobile network will be an issue here. Do check the picture gallery to admire this beach as well. Al Dahariz Beach Located in the eastern part of Salalah, this beach is easily accessible by 10 to 20 minutes drive from any part of Salalah. Al Dahariz is a commercial beach of Salalah. This white sand beach surrounded by coconut trees of-

fers a perfect abode to relax on any day. The walkway is beautifully lightened up with bollard lights. Make a perfect spot for your boring evening walks elsewhere. Imagine daily walking down from your hotel to the beach to witness the beautiful sunrise and sunset. The government has developed gazebo so one can sit under the shade on the benches and enjoy the view of this beautiful beach. This place provides you with an ample option to choose from be it a hotel, eatery joint or a picnic spot to conclude your perfect evening. You can even do barbeque here under one of the umbrella hut (gazebo) for the public or just get a mat and enjoy the sight and sound of sea waves and do some bird watching as well. You can also walk along Al Dahariz creek, which is a best spot for bird watching. The shelter hut here offers a good height and a place to relax and do bird watching. Al Haffa Beach It’s one of my all time favorite. This white sand beach is so picturesque, especially the way the palm trees are aligned naturally in the direction of the sea. I haven’t witnessed a more beautiful sunset anywhere else. This place never disappoints as far as the pictures are concerned. Major part of the beach is still under construction. Advisable to carry mat or chairs along with food items in case you are planning to sit for long. Bird watching is a treat here, for this beach is full of gorgeous seagulls and since the port is near, so you can also enjoy the view of ships from far. From the beach you can drive to old souq in Al Haffa. This souq is the oldest and most renowned. Salalah is nature’s blessing, with its best offering of peace to you. Enjoy your trip!

In the furthest reaches of the Sultanate, iso-

lated from the rest of Oman by the arm of the United Arab Emirate’s east coast, arises a land of dramatic beauty. Musandam took shape 1850 million years ago during the Cretaceous and Miocene ages. Here, awe-inspiring mountain faces overlook pristine blue expanses. These mountains, originally from the Zagros Mountain range, separated under earthquake and volconic violence to form the Hajar Mountain range. A starkly beautiful region of fjords, mountain-draped roads and bustling villages, Musandam is a must visit for any visitor to Oman. Nature in Musandam is raw, untouched and pristine and civilization is isolated distant from the world around. The looming mountains which descend into the sea are brown and grey and shaped alike anchored ships. A perfect setting for a poet to write a few lines, for the ambience leaves one feeling as mere mortals, caught and suspended between the unfathom-

able depth of the sea and the sky, totally dominated by nature. The Musandam peninsula in the extreme north of Oman offers some of the most breathtaking and spectacular scenery in the country. In the last glacial period, the sea level rose by almost one hundred meters and submerged a large number of wadis, thus creating a landscape of fjords, which earned Musandam the title, ‘Norway of the Gulf’. Musandam in Arabic means anvil. And the name suits it as it reflects the geological changes the Arabian Peninsula has undergone over millions of years including the separation of the tectonic plates between Arabia and Eurasia. Musandam has a series of inlets into which the Indian Ocean has penetrated, digging out fjords until the far north of Musandam became one

large isthmus, which appears as a pointed finger between the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, a strategic site, known to the world as ‘Strait of Hormuz’. Take a walk down time The passage of time has not changed the raw natural beauty of Musandam. Flanked by the Arabian Gulf on the North West and the Gulf of Oman in the East, this land is home to four wilayats, Khasab, Bhuka, Dibba and Mudha. A boat ride across the coast of Khasab is a breath-taking experience, with panoramic views of craggy cliffs, a jagged coastline, and glimpses of little fishing villages nestled among them. Dominating the coast and surrounded by towering mountains, is the Khasab fort. Dating back to the time of Al Bu Said, it been renovated by the Ministry of Heritage and Culture in 1990. The Kumzan fort ruins and the towers of Al Siba, Kabas Al Kar and Said Bin Amad Bin Sulaiman Aal Malik are other areas of interest here. A stone’s throw from Khasab port is the village of Tawi, where you can admire ancient rock carvings, the work of artists from prehistoric times. Research has also proved that Mudha has been home to settlers for over 3500 years. Here rock paintings dating back to pre-Islamic times have been uncovered. And excavations have thrown light on ruins from the Iron Age, 1000 – 1500 years B.C. The Shihuh, a tribe of the Musandam The Shihuh tribe has survived the rigors of the living amidst the bare and solitary mountains of the Musandam. Up to a decade or so

2017 - 18 75096 inner.indd 54

Musandam was an isolated region of Oman where communities existed in isolation, and the people spoke only their own typical language and lived contented within them. They lived in stone huts, nestled like birds nests in the mountains and collected the winter rain in large containers for irrigating the terraced fields where they grew food crops for their sustenance. Pockets of flat land supported meager agriculture. In summer, when the water got depleted, they moved closer to the coast, collected dates in palm groves and fished. Today, some of the villages have been abandoned. In spite of leading a hardy life, the Shihuh’s have followed their traditional ways of life. They still carry long handled wooden hatches on their belts. Since 1970, the village of Khasab has become a modern town of Kamzar, the most distant village in Musandam, in the isthmus and which can be approached by boat and has more inhabitants than Bhukha on the west coast. Today there is an air network connection between Muscat and Khasab. Where nature goes overboard with abundance. The Musandam coastline is peppered with many small islands and inlets, all teeming with bird and marine life. Seabirds, dolphins, whales and a colourful spectrum of fish species make this a nature lover’s and diver’s paradise. Divers especially, find an underwater haven in these blue waters. Mushroom Rock, a small island that just kisses the surface, has a reef that gently slopes

down to the sand floor, making it the perfect dive spot. Another ideal dive spot is Limah Rock, a large island rising from the sea. Divers in these waters are astounded by the variety of reef fish and shoals of larger fish like the batfish and barracuda, which give it an almost aquarium like feel. Corals abound here – large green cabbage coral, red and yellow teddy bear coral, soft purple coral, brown and green table coral, and more. A land that grows on you. Khasab means ‘fertile’ in arabic, and the cultivation of fruits and vegetables, fishing and animal rearing are the occupations followed by the inhabitants here. Mudha is irrigated by a falaj and natural springs. Some of these have astonishing properties, which put them high on a mustvisit list. Al Samaai springs contain sulphurous water, which is said to cure skin disorders. Al Sheikh Mohammed bin Salim al Madhani falaj is cold in summer and warm in winter. To experience these rejeuvenating waters, be sure to make Mudha part of your Musandam itinerary. Ready to pack your bags for the majestic fjords? You can get to Musandam by air, with Oman Air which has three direct flights from Dubai to Khasab, and year-round Muscat-Khasab flights. The airline also has convenient connections from many Gulf cities. Also, check out the attractive pagkages linked to these flights. 59 75096 inner.indd 59

memorable. The grand size of the room, finished with a unique timber ceiling and rough brown mud-washed walls, overwhelms the guest when those studded, imposing, black entry-door swings open. The general design reinterpretation, is a serious attempt at creating a modern architectural rendition of the classic Omani Fort concept. To bring authenticity to the rural-feel, there is even a small re-creation of a typical village well, in the outdoor seating area of the restaurant. The structure is created in a harmonious blend of the brown and black theme. One sees extensive usage of the brown desert bronze marble quarried in nearby Suhar, married with black African teak wood used for the woodwork and pergolas that embellish the exteriors and poolside. All these elements were thoughtfully put together in the wonderful design of the property, and that must have surely been the reason it was declared the proud and deserving winner of the “Hospitality Project Of The Year 2015 Award given by Construction Week Middle East. Atana Musandam, is indeed a promising start, made by a great new Omani hospitality brand in the making.

The ancient seafaring town of Sur and its port located strategically at the easternmost point of Arabian Peninsula with its boat (dhow) building centres and forts retains many of its old charms even now. Situated around 330 km from Muscat, Sur had been a point of attention of the world from ancient times. The harbour of Sur is one of the oldest in the world. It is said that Sun rises here first in the Arab world. For centuries Sur had been famous as a ship building-especially of trans-ocean vessels-and trading centre. Sur had trade relations with the African coast and Indian sub continent almost from sixth century. Due to the strategic location of Sur it is able to monitor the Indian Ocean and the Oman Sea from the place. Many of the ships which were constructed in Sur went to India, China, Iraq and various other countries. The old quarter of Sur is very fascinating and has several ancient Arabesque buildings with carved wooden doors.

The winding roads add to its

charms. Though its fortunes declined to a certain extent with the advent of modern ship building and establishment of new trade routes to the East after the opening of Suez canal, presently it is on the path of revival. Dhow building The reputation of Sur as the major traditional boat (dhow) building town in Oman stands intact even now. The same wooden vessels that were in use two centuries before are being made here even now without much change. Its antiquity and craftsmanship still lures tourists. The skilled craftsmen of Sur are still unmatched in building dhows. Boat building is still an important industry in the town. A visit to the boatyards will be a wonderful experience to tourists as it would take them centuries back. You will see how the expert artisans work without modern technical drawings or tools and still manage to make some of the most wonderful seaworthy vessels. If you venture out of the town and go along the coast, you will find dhows along the coast. Sur was often described as the pearl of the east coast of the Sultanate. It was the main source for sailors for Oman’s navy, which played an illustrious role in maritime history. It formed the gateway of the east of Oman and was a historical meeting place for sea routes. Malik Bin Faham Al Azdi Al Umani adopted it as the capital of

2017 - 18 75096 inner.indd 66

his kingdom in 2500 B.C. When Qalahat became an important urban centre, the Wilayat of Sur flourished. Ras Al Hadd is part of the Wilayat of Sur and is around 60 kilometres from the town of Sur. The beaches around Ras Al Hadd are famous for nestling turtles. The site is popular among tourists from all over the world. Forts The Arabic word Sur means fortified area and there are several magnificent forts in and around the town. One of the most outstanding fortresses in the wilayat of Sur is the fort Al Rafsah which was used in ancient times to guard the main gateway to the Wilayat on the desert road. The fort is not accessible to all visitors now. A strong chain has been put up to stop people going in, for safety and

RAZ AL JINZ WORLD TURTLE SANCTUARY Text: Rob Wissing Photography: Japp Croese

Only a few hours easy travelling east from Muscat via Quriat and the highway to Sur, lies one of Oman’s top tourist attractions. Oman allows you to welcome the dawn at Ras Al Jinz – famous for two reasons: it’s the most easterly point of the Arabian Peninsula and where the rising sun’s first rays strike land, and one of the world’s most important sanctuaries for the endangered green turtle, Chelonia midas. They get their name from the greenish shell, their vegetarian diet (mainly seagrass) and the colour of their fatty flesh, once the proverbial rich man’s food as turtle soup. They are an ancient species evolving 150 million years ago, and in Oman this turtle, known locally as a’sulahfah al khadra, hmissa or shiree, has a long track record too. On these sweeping white beaches just below the Tropic of Cancer, some 30,000 female turtles come ashore every year to nest, churning up the beaches in a welter of nesting pits and tracks. They haul their bulk up the steep beaches where they themselves hatched, driven by the primeval urge to reproduce. Now a huge mature female weighing up to 200 kg and up to 1.5 metres in length, each one has almost miraculously survived to

2017 - 18 75096 inner.indd 68

maturity in her thirties. She will lay up to a hundred round eggs the size of a ping-pong ball up to five times a season, peaking in the summer months between June and September. Then thousands of turtles vie for a prime nesting spot above the high tide mark. Adapted to a marine life to swimming, they now have to adapt to being landlubbers and excavators. They use their shorter back flippers to dig the deep nesting pit, and settle down to deposit their eggs in a steady stream. Then the long powerful front flippers fill it, and she tamps down the sand and disguises the nest by scattering sand randomly over the site. Exhausted, she returns to the sea. Her task is done. She will not see her offspring. Nature and the climate does the rest – curiously, the proportion of male to female hatchlings will depend on the average temperature during incubation – cooler produces females, warmer males. About two months later, the eggs which have been steadily incubating almost a metre below the sand hatch, a spectacle which has to be experienced in a sheer celebration of the race for life. The hatchlings emerge into a very strange brave, and dangerous, new world. Even before they hatch, animals like foxes dig

68 12/20/17 12:06 PM

up their eggs, humans in many parts of the world find their eggs a nutritious food source, and on very crowded beaches, earlier nests are sometimes exposed and the eggs scattered or crushed by other nesting females digging their own nests. Once they do all scramble up out of the sand and head pell-mell to the sea, a host of hungry predators await them eagerly. Gulls and ghost crabs pick off the unlucky stragglers running the gauntlet to the sea. There is a survival strategy in these mass hatchings – the sheer numbers of little turtles outnumber their natural enemies. Even reaching the sea is only the beginning – more seabirds, predatory fish and the nets of fishermen present further dangers even in a conservation area. Turtles have to surface to breathe, so being entangled in a net is a death sentence. Turtles have enjoyed rigorous legal protection along this 45 km stretch of coastline between Ras Al Hadd and Ras Al Jinz since 1996, with stronger conservation measures imposed by royal decree in 2008. In the past, you could camp on the beach and watch turtles at night without overt control measures, but now access to the beaches is strictly controlled in the interests

of conservation. Prior bookings are essential. Small parties of visitors monitored by official guides may watch the females digging their nests and laying their eggs at night between 8 and 9 pm, but no flash photography or torches are allowed. In the mornings, however, it’s a good idea to get onto the early slot at 5 am. Then you will be rewarded by the sunrise over the sweep of the main nesting beach and the strangely eroded golden limestone cliffs in time to see the last nesting females heave themselves exhausted back to the sea, leaving their characteristic tank track trail as they go. And you may also be lucky enough, as we were, alerted by our expert guides Saleh Al Amri and Saoud Al Ma’amari, to witness the miracle of a faint stirring in the sand developing into a mass eruption of tiny black turtles – I counted sixty four! This is the only place in the world where green turtles nest 365 days a year, so the chances of seeing at least one are pretty good. The quietest month is March, so plan your trip accordingly. Early morning visits are also worthwhile for another reason. The males never return to land, but they know that the females have

to, so nature has ensured a trysting spot. Each turtle knows instinctively, like salmon and eels and other migratory species, where they were hatched. As the females lurch back into the sea, the canny males are waiting for them. Amorous males bob about in the waves anxious to mate with females, and catching them as they come off the beach weakened after completing one egg-laying mission allows the next batch to be fertilised. To help them in the tricky procedure of mating in water and having to breathe too, there have been smart adaptations – the male has a long thick tail to wrap below the female’s carapace, and two handy claws on his front flippers to hook in place over the front of her shell during the lengthy procedure. It’s not unusual to see a few males mobbing an eligible female either! Radio tracking turtles began in 2006 and has shown the huge distances covered by tagged females in their Indian Ocean voyages. Some went as far south as the Maldive Islands 2000 km away, up and down the Gulf and the coast of Baluchistan, all around the Red Sea and back, and even as far south as Somalia. Collecting this data is essential for international conservation measures.

For the best and most convenient base, the Ministry of Tourism runs the Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve reservations@rasaljinzturtlereserve.com 96550606/0707. This has the added advantage of being right on the spot, so to speak, with a really excellent site museum and educational centre devoted to turtles in general. The long prehistoric record of human activity at Ras Al Jinz is a further unexpected highlight, with imaginative displays of the rich archaeological evidence of human occupation at this important site over the last 6000 years. The accommodation itself may be somewhat unimaginative and housed in an echoing monolithic building, but the staff are pleasant, knowledgeable and helpful. Perhaps the bland main building was designed to present a solid cliff-like façade, possibly to minimise any possible disturbance to the turtles. There is also a private luxury tented camp, which enjoys a view over the sea, whereas the ordinary rooms in the main building do not. Another option not too far away is the more laid-back and pleasant Turtle Beach Resort at Ras Al Hadd (info@tbroman.com 25543400/25540068 GSM +968 99007709) which will arrange permits and transport for guests.

For the adventurous, there are plenty of opportunities for swimming and a visit to a partially submerged cave. About seven kilometers away from Wadi Shab starts Wadi Tiwi

WHAT IS A WADI? which extends 36 km inland and ends at a mountain village known as Mibam. Many groves and fruit trees grow along the course of this wadi from which the azure blue sea can be seen as you climb up the hills and descend into the valleys. There is a resort is built on the hill overlooking the blue sea near Tiwi called the Wadi Shab resort and Sur town is approximately 47 km from this resort.

A wadi is a dried up riverbed found in the mountain valleys. Wadis come into their own after heavy rains, when the rivers start running again and the vegetation is restored. However, some wadis have year-round running water, with deep, cool pools in which it is quite safe to swim if the currents are slow. On the whole, wadis are only accessible with a four-wheel drive vehicle, as the terrain can be extremely bumpy. Wadis are green, lush oases

of palm trees, grasses, and flowering shrubs. It is always safest to visit wadis in a group or with a tour guide. Although they are beautiful places, they are often remote and car breakdowns can happen to anyone. Visitors must also be on the alert for rain clouds, as sudden downpours can lead to flash floods, which are highly dangerous when in the gorges.

JABAL AKHDAR

THE MAJESTIC GREEN MOUNTAIN Text & Pictures: Christian Li Gregni and Gabriella Vacca

Put together a couple of Italian tourists, an English couple living in Muscat, the refreshing, suggestive swimming pool of a hotel in Nizwa, and you’ll get a terrific adventurous journey in Jebel Akhdar! My wife and I were bathing in the swimming pool, trying to recover from the August’s hot and sticky weather, when we met Sally, and English teacher who settled in Oman with her husband and her three sons almost 20 years ago. She was about to take a couple of friends to Jebel Akhdar the day after: she knows that mountain chain like an Omani, since she started to take there also her pupils. It took us just five minutes to get invited and we couldn’t miss such an opportunity. We would have never discovered the incredible places she brought

2017 - 18 75096 inner.indd 82

us to on our own, even following our Lonely Planet guide’s suggestions. We know that not everybody might appreciate such “naked” at first sight, though magnificent mountain, so different from the stereotypes of mountains rich of forests, trees, rivers western people have in mind. But this amazing, suggestive environment is the example of Omani beauty: austere in its majesty, this rocky mountain reveals itself step by step, kilometre after kilometre, while climbing it. The stunning views within the massive mountains are themselves a good reason to spend a day or more on the Jebel Akhdar. We left early in the morning and suddenly we realized that we were not going for an easy summer trip. A military checkpoint

82 12/20/17 12:07 PM

at the beginning of the road checked our cars: a four-wheel drive was required and we understood very soon why. The

revealed us the altitude we reached: wet and hot weather gave way to a fresh and pleasant climate.

road started immediately to climb up so high that after a few hairpin bends we could see the flat bottom of the valley surrounding Nizwa below us: we thought we had reached the top of the mountain already; instead, it was just the beginning. In fact, Jebel Akhdar, being a part of the Al Hajar Mountains, which extends for about 300 km northwest to southeast, about 50100 km inland from the Gulf of Oman, is one of country’s most spectacular and wide areas. The highest point, Jabal Shams (“the Mountain of the Sun”), is about 3,000 metres high: it is the highest point in Oman and the in whole of eastern Arabia. Despite of the deserted and sunny landscape, the temperature

We first stopped over to a Yemenite-styled village, where green terraces dominate the steep cliffs and the mud houses paint a unique skyline. A small path crowed by children playing led us to the heart of the village, where the mosque’s blue dome silhouetted against the sky. The environment was amazing, stone peaks everywhere around us, surrounding that green, quiet village. Our new English friend drove her 4 wheels car with incredible skill, like if she was born in those mountains. Then she took us to an old abandoned village of rustic stone built houses merging almost invisibly with the base rocks. We descended a stoned

83 75096 inner.indd 83

2017 - 18 12/20/17 12:07 PM

path and after a while, we arrived to a unique place: along the red walls, we saw cavities revealing men’s passage; the sun’s rays coming in from what once were sort of windows enlightened the inside. We wondered how old that settlement was. We went on driving upon a tableland, which surprised us after such a long climb: the Saiq Plateau is a huge rocky flat laying at an average altitude of just over 2000 m, whose most astonishing feature is the Lady Diana’s viewpoint: from there, the Hajar Mountains stand proudly and apparently endless, below us. We could never imagine such a desolate land could be so romantic! The last stop was waiting us before coming down to Nizwa. We were driving apparently to nowhere following Sally’s car, a bit scared when we took a path leaving the “main” road, descending along the cliff with some terrific sharp turns. We thought it’s was not safe and maybe it really wasn’t, but Sally seemed so skilled, having made that path several times already. Finally, we parked the car in front another magnificent view of canyons and peaks, aside a narrow valley. We stuck astonished, when we saw some people and goats on the opposite

2017 - 18 75096 inner.indd 84

side: hard to believe, and even to see, but that was a real, living village camouflaged with the red-coloured cliffs! We could never believe it was possible to live in such a rocky-clinged place. Sally told us the authorities were trying to encourage and support people living on the Jebel Ahkdar by means of very smart politics, restoring historic settlements, building new sustainable and eco-friendly houses and implementing schooling, even if it takes to use helicopters to bring children to school! After almost two years we still remember that experience as one of the strongest in our life and when we think about it, we laugh at the meaning of “difficulty” in our western culture, so full of comfort and useless objects. In those remote places, the simplest things are maybe harder, but the most complicated aspects of our essence become suddenly clearer, and our spirit recognises instinctively where we come from, and what we belong to: nature. Thanks to Sally and to her family for giving us the chance to live this wonderful adventure, and thanks to Oman for showing us the pure, simple meaning of life.

BOWSHAR INTERNATIONAL HOTEL

Location: Ruwi
