Enjoy an autumn of “jazzy” hues! Uživajte u jeseni „obojenoj“ u jazz!

ovember brings cooler and shorter days, but one can still enjoy time in nature, with its delightful palette of lovely autumn colors. Jazz Fest Sarajevo is definitely the event of the month (November 2–6). This year is the 20th edition and will feature famous international jazz artists, as well as interpreters of jazz and its related genres from local and regional scenes. Given the Festival’s widespread popularity, jazz lovers from around the world descend upon our city at the beginning of every November to enjoy concerts and evening-long performances in Sarajevo clubs. This month we recommend Ars Aevi Museum, which houses one of the most important collections of contemporary art in Southeastern Europe. Part of the collection is currently on display at Art Depot in Dom Mladih, which serves as a temporary location until a separate facility is built. The museum will be designed by the Italian architect, Renzo Piano, who also did the pedestrian bridge that spans the Miljacka River at a point along Wilson’s Promenade, not far from the future site of the museum. It is worth noting that Wilson’s Promenade, which stretches for two kilometers along the Miljacka, is one of the most popular destinations in the center of town for nature lovers.

Događaj mjeseca svakako je Jazz Fest Sarajevo, čije će 20. izdanje biti održano od 02. do 06. novembra, a na kojem nastupaju renomirani međunarodni jazz umjetnici, ali i domaći i regionalni interpretatori jazz-a i srodnih muzičkih pravaca. Zbog nadaleko poznatog Festivala naš grad početkom novembra iz godine u godinu posjećuju ljubitelji jazz-a iz cijelog svijeta, koji uživaju u festivalskim koncertima, ali i cjelovečernjim svirkama u sarajevskim klubovima. U ovom mjesecu preporučujemo i posjet Muzeju Ars Aevi, koji posjeduje jednu od najznačajnijih zbirki savremene umjetnosti u Jugoistočnoj Evropi. Dio zbirke trenutno se može pogledati u Art Depo-u u Domu mladih, gdje je kolekcija smještena do izgradnje zasebne zgrade muzeja. Projekt zgrade Muzeja djelo je italijanskog arhitekte Renza Piana, zaslužnog i za izgradnju pješačkog mosta preko Miljacke na Vilsonovom šetalištu, u čijoj bi se blizini zgrada budućeg muzeja trebala i nalaziti. A, samo Vilsonovo šetalište, koje se u centru grada, u dužini od dva kilometra, proteže uz rijeku Miljacku, jedna je od omiljenih gradskih destinacija za ljubitelje prirode.

apital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo is the largest city and country’s administrative, economic, cultural, university and sport center. The City of Sarajevo is comprised of four Municipalities: Stari Grad, Centar, Novo Sarajevo and Novi Grad.

Situated in the area called Sarajevo Plain, the town is surrounded by mountains – Jahorina, Bjelašnica, Igman, Treskavica and Trebević. River Miljacka flows through the city.

Sarajevo je smješteno na prostoru Sarajevskog polja. Okruženo je planinama Jahorinom, Bjelašnicom, Igmanom, Treskavicom i Trebevićem. Kroz grad teče rijeka Miljacka.

Bosniaks, Croats, Serbs, Jews, Roma and other ethnic groups live in Sarajevo. The religions represented are Catholicism, Christian Orthodoxy, Islam and Judaism.

The area that Sarajevo occupies has been continuously inhabited since the Prehistoric period. It becomes a city with the arrivals of the Ottomans in 15th century, and a capital of independent BiH in 1992. Sarajevo has always connected East and the West thus creating a unique blend of history, culture and heritage.

Prostor na kojem se nalazi Sarajevo naseljen je još od prahistorijskog vremena. Gradsko središte Sarajevo postaje dolaskom Osmanlija u 15. stoljeću, a glavni grad nezavisne BiH 1992. godine. The Church of the Holy Trinity Crkva Presvetog Trojstva

Church of the Holy Trinity is located in the Sarajevo Trojstva nalazi se u sarajevskom naselju Theneighborhood, Dolac Malta. CrkvaDolacPresvetog Malta. The front of this Catholic church faces south and looks out onto Zmaja od Bosne, a main road in town. There is a residential building, Župni Stan, on the northern side and the western side faces the post office/commercial center. The Church of the Holy Trinity was at the center of urban development for the new part of Sarajevo and is a major example of the historicism of BiH’s sacral arts. With the onset of Austro-Hungarian rule in BiH, the first Archbishop of Vrhbosna, Dr. Josip Stadler, was very active from 1881 until 1918, when he founded church parishes and oversaw the construction of the Cathedral of Jesus’ Sacred Heart, monasteries, several churches, seminaries, educational centers, schools…. It was during this time that many workers began to arrive from all parts of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the population increased dramatically. The city began to expand around the old railway station and the neighborhood, Gradski Pofalići, which is where many new railway workers and those employed in the lumber industry took up residence.

Ova katolička bogomolja je svojim glavnim, južnim pročeljem okrenuta prema centralnoj gradskoj saobraćajnici, ulici Zmaja od Bosne, na njenoj sjevernoj strani nalazi se stambeni objekat - župni stan, a na zapadu je poslovni kompleks Pošte. Upravo je Crkva Presvetog Trojstva bila nukleus urbanog razvoja novog dijela Sarajeva, te predstavlja jedno od značajnih ostvarenja historicizma u sakralnoj umjetnosti Bosne i Hercegovine. Nakon uspostavljanja austrougarske uprave u BiH prvi vrhbosanski nadbiskup, dr. Josip Stadler, je između 1881. i 1918. utemeljio crkvene župe i dao sagraditi nekoliko crkava, Katedralu srca Isusova, samostane, bogosloviju, sjemeništa, odgojne zavode, škole... Kako su u to doba u Sarajevo u velikom broju počeli pristizati radnici iz svih dijelova Austro-Ugarskog carstva, broj stanovnika se naglo povećavao i grad se počeo širiti oko stare željezničke stanice i naselja Gradski Pofalići, gdje je nastala nova radnička četvrt sa željezničkim radionicama i pogonima za preradu drveta.

Most of the new arrivals were Catholic and, with the approval of the National Government of 1902, Archbishop Stadler founded the Holy Trinity Parish, which was in need of a place of worship. At first, given limited funds, only a chapel was going to be built, but Stadler decided in 1904 that a parish church should be built. Josip Vancaš was entrusted with designing the project. At that time he served as the official architect and adviser for the Vrhbosna Diocese and designed all of the objects that were commissioned by the Catholic Church during the period of Austro-Hungarian rule in Sarajevo. Vancaš completed his designs for the church by the early part of 1905 and, within three months, the Austro-Hungarian authorities approved the designs and construction plans. The Vrhbosna Diocese financed the project and most of the money was provided by Archbishop Stadler himself. Construction was completed by the autumn of 1906 and the dedication ceremony took place on November 18 of that year. The Church of the Holy Trinity was built as a single-naved basilica in the Neo-Romanesque style. It is 40 meters long, 15 meters wide and the 46-meter high tower is topped by a three-meter wrought-iron cross. The Church of the Holy Trinity was at the center of urban development for the new part of Sarajevo and is a major example of the historicism of BiH’s sacral arts.

The church features Secession-style stained glass windows and the original façade was done in two colors, with gray and blue bands. The interior was painted by Karl Richter and the painting of the Holy Trinity and other paintings at the altar are the work of Oton Iveković. The church was badly damaged during the last war, especially the roof, façade and windows, so from 1999 to 2008 it underwent a series of renovations and the façade now has light and dark shades of ochre. In 2008, a cathedral from Freiburg, Germany presented the church with a valuable gift – an organ that can play pieces from all musical periods. The organ is used during sacral ceremonies and classical music concerts. In 2009, the Committee for the Preservation of National Monuments made this historical building a National Monument of BiH.

Većina doseljenog stanovništva bila je katoličke vjere, pa je nadbiskup Stadler, uz odobrenje Zemaljske vlade, 1902. godine utemeljio katoličku župu Presvetog Trojstva, za koju je trebalo graditi i bogomolju. Zbog oskudice u novcu najprije se razmišljalo o gradnji kapele, ali je Stadler 1904. godine odlučio, ipak, graditi župnu crkvu. Izrada projektne dokumentacije povjerena je Josipu Vancašu, koji je u to vrijeme bio zvanični arhitekta i savjetnik Vrhbosanske nadbiskupije, te projektant svih objekata koje je katolička crkva tokom austrougarske uprave izgradila u Sarajevu. Upravo je Crkva Presvetog Trojstva bila nukleus urbanog razvoja novog dijela Sarajeva, te predstavlja jedno od značajnih ostvarenja historicizma u sakralnoj umjetnosti Bosne i Hercegovine.

Vancaš je projekat izgradnje crkve načinio početkom 1905. godine, a austrougarske vlasti su za manje od tri mjeseca odobrile nacrt i gradnju crkve. Novac su namirile župe Vrhbosanske nadbiskupije, a najveći dio dao je sam nadbiskup Stadler. Izgradnja je završena do jeseni 1906. godine, a Crkva je posvećena 18. novembra te godine. Crkva Presvetog Trojstva izgrađena je u stilu jednobrodne neoromaničke bazilike. Dugačka je 40, a široka 15 metara, sa tornjem visine 46 metara, na čijem vrhu se nalazi križ od kovanog željeza, visok skoro tri metra. Na prozorima crkve nalaze se secesijski vitraži, dok je originalna fasada bila izrađena u dvobojnim, sivo - plavim trakama. Unutrašnjost crkve oslikao je Karl Richter, a slika Presvetog Trojstva i ostale slike na oltaru su djelo Otona Ivekovića. Tokom posljednjeg rata crkva je znatno oštećena, posebno krov, fasada i vitraži. Od 1999. do 2008. godine bogomolja je u fazama obnavljana, a sadašnja fasada riješena je u alternaciji svjetlijeg i tamnijeg okera. Od katedrale iz njemačkog grada Freiburga sarajevska Crkva Presvetog Trojstva je 2008. godine na poklon dobila vrijedne orgulje, na kojima je moguće izvoditi orguljska djela svih muzičkih razdoblja. Orgulje služe za sakralne obrede, ali i za izvedbu koncerata klasične muzike. Komisija za očuvanje nacionalnih spomenika je historijsku građevinu, Crkvu Presvetog Trojstva u Sarajevu, 2009. godine proglasila nacionalnim spomenikom BiH.

Ashkenazi Synagogue was built in 1902 by Karl Paržik as the first religious object to be constructed in a then-popular pseudo-Moorish style. It is the third biggest synagogue in Europe. Baščaršija is the heart of old Sarajevo. The building started in 1462 and reached its culmination by the middle of 16th century. In the center of it is Sebilj (from Arabic word depicting a kiosk-like public fountain) designed by the Czech architect Alexander Vitek. Baščaršija je srce starog Sarajeva. Izgradnja je započeta 1462. godine, a procvat doživljava u 16. stoljeću. U centru Baščaršije se nalazi Sebilj (ar. Sebilj - javna česma u obliku kioska) kojeg je dizajnirao arhitekt Aleksandar Vitek. Cathedral of Jesus’ Sacred Heart Katedrala Srca Isusova

The seat of the Archbishop of Vrhbosna (Upper Bosnia), Cathedral of Jesus’ Sacred Heart, was built in a neo-gothic style in 1889. The tomb of Josip Štadler, Archbishop of Vrhbosna from the turn of the 20th century, is located in the Cathedral. City Hall Vije}nica

Built in 1896 in the Pseudo-Moorish style, Vijećnica served as the seat of city government and would come to house the National Library after World War II. When the library was bombed and burned in 1992, the majority of the library’s collection went up in smoke. After nearly two decades of renovation, Vijećnica re-opened its doors on May 9, 2014. Vijećnica je izgrađena 1896. u pseudomaurskom stilu kao sjedište gradske uprave, da bi nakon Drugog svjetskog rata u njoj bila smještena Nacionalna biblioteka. Biblioteka je 1992. granatirana i zapaljena i tom prilikom je izgorio i veći dio knjižnog fonda. Nakon skoro dvije decenije obnove Vijećnica je ponovo otvorena 9. maja 2014. godine. Gazi Husrev Bey’s Mosque

Gazi Husrev Bey’s Mosque is the most important Islamic house of worship in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Constructed in 1531, it was left to the city by Gazi Husrev Bey, the Ottoman ruler of Bosnia. The mosque is only a part of Gazi Husrev Bey’s substantial bequest to the city. Gazi Husrev-begova džamija je najznačajniji islamski vjerski objekt u BiH. Izgrađena je 1531., a zadužbina je Gazi Husrev-bega, tadašnjeg osmanskog namjesnika. Džamija je samo dio velike Gazi Husrev-begove ostavštine. The Latin Bridge

Latinska }uprija

The Latin Bridge was built in 16th century but acquired world fame for the infamous Sarajevo Assassination. Precisely from this spot Gavrilo Princip shot and killed Austro-Hungarian heir to the throne - archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophia, which triggered the start of World War I. Latinska ćuprija je izgrađena u 16. stoljeću, a postala je svjetski poznata po Sarajevskom atentatu. Tu je Gavrilo Princip usmrtio austrougarskog prijestolonasljednika Franza Ferdinanda i njegovu suprugu Sofiju, što je bio povod za početak Prvog svjetskog rata. The Old Orthodox Church Stara pravoslavna crkva

The Old Orthodox Church was built in 16th century. Unique for its atypical architecture, this church has been safe guarding holy icons and religious relics for centuries. There are several interesting legends and folk tales related to its founding. Stara pravoslavna crkva sagrađena je u 16. stoljeću. Tunnel of Hope Tunel spasa

Built under the runway of Sarajevo Airport in 1993, the Tunnel of Hope was the city’s only connection with the outside world during the four years of siege. A portion of it remains open today. STREETS AND SQUARES OF SARAJEVO

ULICE I TRGOVI SARAJEVA

one of Sarajevo’s oldest streets, is a major road je naziv jedne od najstarijih sarajevskih ulica, Bistrik, that runs through the neighborhood of the same name. Bobaliistrik centralne saobraćajnice u istoimenom naselju na lijevoj Miljacke. The street runs north to south, from Obala Isa Bey Ishaković and then uphill, almost all the way to the headwaters of Bistrički Potok, which is how the street and area got their name. The street passes below the bridge that was once part of the narrow railway, and right before it the street bends a bit to the left, passing the old Bistrik station. During the Ottoman period, it was actually three separate streets. The part that ran to what is now Bakarevića St. was called Šehove Dugonje; the section from Bakarevića to the railway bridge was called Bistrik and the part above the bridge was Pastrma. Even by the end of the Ottoman period, the small street that ran from the Miljacka to the bridge was called Bistrik and it retained this name until 1931, when it was renamed 6 Novembra St., after the date in 1918 when the first units of the Royal Serbian Army entered Sarajevo. They had traveled by train from Višegrad and then came into town via Bistrik St. From 1941 to 1945, the street was named after the historian, Muhamed Ef. Kadić, and after liberation it was again called 6 Novembra and included the Pastrma section. The old name, Bistrik, was restored in 1993.

Ulica ide pravcem sjever – jug, od Obale Isa – bega Ishakovića, pa uzbrdo, gotovo do vrha Bistričkog potoka, po kojem su ulica i naselje i dobili imena. Na svom putu saobraćajnica prolazi ispod mosta kojim je nekada išla uskotračna željeznička pruga, a tik prije mosta jedan krak ulice odvaja se nalijevo ka zgradi stare željezničke stanice Bistrik. U tursko doba je današnja ulica bila sastavljena od tri odvojene ulice. Početna dionica, do današnje Bakarevića ulice zvala se Šehove dugonje, dionica od ulice Bakarevića do željezničkog mosta se zvala Bistrik, a dio iznad mosta nosio je naziv Pastrma. Već krajem osmanskog perioda kompletna trasa od Miljacke do mosta nazvana je Bistrik i tako se zvala sve do 1931. godine, kada je dobila ime 6. novembra, po datumu kada su 1918. u Sarajevo ušle prve jedinice srpske kraljevske vojske. One su iz Višegrada stigle željezničkom prugom, te se niz Bistrik spustile u grad. Od 1941. do 1945. ulica se zvala po historičaru Muhamedu ef. Kadiću, a nakon oslobođenja vraćeno joj je ime 6. novembra, te joj je priključena i trasa ulice Pastrma. Stari naziv Bistrik ulica je dobila 1993. godine.

The National Museum of BiH is the oldest and most significant institution of its kind in BiH. Approximately four million items are housed in collections representing the fields of archeology, ethnology and the natural sciences, plus the museum has its own botanical garden, with more than 3,000 plant species. Zemaljski muzej BiH najstarija je i najznačajnija muzejska institucija u BiH. Through its collections, Historical Museum of BiH defines the history of BiH from the arrival of Slavs on the Balkan Peninsula to the contemporary period. Historijski muzej BiH kroz svoje zbirke obrađuje historiju BiH od dolaska Slavena na Balkansko poluostrvo, pa do savremenog doba.

Sarajevo is anything but a boring city! Sarajevo je grad u kojem nije dosadno!

hristopher (Chris) Bennett is a historian and author of Yugoslavia’s Bloody Collapse and Bosnia’s Paralyzed Peace. He is also Director of the Foundation for the Preservation of Historical Heritage, which aims to preserve BiH’s historical heritage by storing the country’s archives in digital form. Chris was born in New Haven, Connecticut and during his career he has worked as a journalist, served as Communications Director in the Office of the High Representative (OHR) in Sarajevo and Head of OHR’s Regional Office in Banja Luka, as well as Director of the Balkans Program for the International Crisis Group. He first came to the Balkans in 1981, while traveling with his mother, who is Slovenian. - I probably tried some water from Baščaršija back then, because I later came to Sarajevo quite regularly, living and working here at times until 2006, when I settled here with my family, says Chris. He sees Sarajevo as a valuable place for historians and is intrigued by Bistrik, where he lives. - I live near Sarajevo Pivara and their museum is worth visiting. I especially like the Church and Monastery of St. Anthony of Padua, where I go with my family once a month, when mass is given in French.

Ovaj bivši novinar i direktor komunikacija u Uredu Visokog predstavnika (OHR) u Sarajevu, potom šef ureda OHR-a u Banja Luci, te direktor Balkanskog projekta Međunarodne krizne grupe, rođen je u New Haven-u, u američkoj državi Connecticut. Balkanom je prvi put proputovao 1981. godine, u pratnji svoje majke, koja je Slovenka. - Vjerovatno sam tada probao vodu sa Baščaršije, jer sam kasnije u Sarajevo dolazio često, ovdje sam povremeno živio i radio, da bih se još 2006. u ovom gradu trajno skrasio s porodicom – kaže Chris. Sarajevo smatra dragocjenim mjestom za historičare, a posebno ga intrigira Bistrik – naselje u kojem živi. - U blizini moje kuće je Sarajevska pivara, u čiji muzej vrijedi otići. Draga mi je Crkva i samostan svetog Ante Padovanskog, gdje jednom mjesečno sa porodicom odlazim na misu na francuskom.

Chris is also impressed by the nearby Konak, the Emperor’s Mosque, Isa Bey’s Hamam, Vijećnica and other buildings that are steeped in history. His foundation works closely with the Historical Museum, the National and University Library and the Museum of Literature and the Performing Arts in BiH, whose courtyard is “the loveliest place in town”. - We would like to make digital souvenirs to help museums and other cultural institutions earn a profit from their collections, Chris explains. Chris is keen to follow opera performances at the National Theater and events at BKC. It bothers him that smoking is permitted in public places and he recently started doing yoga at Prana Yoga Studio on Radićeva St., which looks out onto the lovely Academy of Fine Arts. - My wife did the design for this studio, as well as other interiors. My children also love art – my son is studying piano at music school and my daughter’s childhood here has been marked by singing in a children’s choir. He is always delighted with the arrival of winter because he loves to ski on the nearby mountains and the kids enjoy skating and playing ice hockey at Zetra. - I live near the base of the Trebević cable car and I can hardly wait for it to start working, because Sarajevo is perfect for enjoying nature and sporting activities. - I live near Sarajevo Pivara and their museum is worth visiting. I especially like the Church and Monastery of St. Anthony of Padua, where I go with my family once a month, when mass is given in French. Chris and his family enjoy different kinds of food: every day he buys a baguette from the French bakery, Maison Coco, and he recommends the sujuk and liver at Hodžić and the pasta at Vapiano. - My children love the savory crêpes at Cakum-Pakum, my wife prefers fish at the excellent restaurant, Luka Sarajevo, and my choice is the Bosnian pot at the little place, Žara iz Duvara. He enjoys taking in a sunset above the Miljacka at Café de Paris (At Mejdan), he usually has coffee at Buybook and tea at Franz and Sophie, and tends to give friends packets of Bosnian coffee as gifts. He thinks that the band, Dubioza Kolektiv, gives the best picture of the Balkan mentality and he has the following message for visitors: - Sarajevo is anything but a boring city!

Impresioniraju ga i obližnji Konak, Careva džamija, Isabegov hamam, Vijećnica, ali i druge zgrade sa historijom. Njegova Fondacija sarađuje sa Historijskim muzejom, Nacionalnom i univerzitetskom bibliotekom i Muzejom književnosti i pozorišne umjetnosti BiH, za čije dvorište kaže da je „najljepše mjesto u gradu”. - Želja nam je i da napravimo suvenire od digitaliziranog materijala, kako bismo pomogli muzejima i drugim kulturnim institucijama da stvaraju profit od sadržaja koje posjeduju – kaže Chris. Redovno prati opere u Narodnom pozorištu i programe u Bosanskom kulturnom centru, otkriva da mu smeta pušenje na javnim mjestima, a saznajemo i da se odnedavno bavi jogom u Prana Yoga studiju u Radićevoj ulici, sa čijeg prozora gleda na prelijepu zgradu Akademije likovnih umjetnosti. - U blizini moje kuće je Sarajevska pivara, u čiji muzej vrijedi otići. Draga mi je Crkva i samostan svetog Ante Padovanskog, gdje jednom mjesečno sa porodicom odlazim na misu na francuskom. - Moja supruga je osmislila dizajn tog studija i još nekih sarajevskih enterijera. Umjetnost vole i moja djeca, sin pohađa muzičku školu i svira klavir, dok je kćerkino djetinjstvo u Sarajevu obilježilo pjevanje u dječijem horu. Raduje se dolasku zime, jer voli skijati na planinama oko Sarajeva, a djeca zimi uživaju u klizanju i hokeju na klizalištu Olimpijskog kompleksa Zetra. - Stanujem u blizini polazne tačke trebevičke žičare i jedva čekam da ona proradi, jer je Sarajevo idealan grad za uživanje u prirodi i sportskim aktivnostima. Chris i njegovi ukućani uživaju u raznovrsnoj kuhinji. U francuskoj pekari Maison Coco svaki dan kupuje baguette, a preporučuje i odlazak na sudžukice i džigericu kod Hodžića, te pastu u Vapianu. - Moja djeca vole slane palačinke u Cakum-pakumu, supruga preferira ribu u odličnom restoranu Luka Sarajevo, dok je moj izbor bosanski lonac u malom restoranu Žara iz Duvara. U prizoru zalaska sunca nad Miljackom uživa u Cafeu de Paris, smještenom uz At Mejdan, na kafu najčešće odlazi u Buybook, čaj pije u Franz & Sophie, a svojim prijateljima obično poklanja pakovanja bosanske kahve. Smatra da muzika bh. benda Dubioza kolektiv najbolje opisuje mentalitet naroda Balkana, a posjetiocima Sarajeva poručuje: - Sarajevo je grad u kojem nije dosadno.
