The location, the food & the people! Uddevalla is an amazing place, the heart of Bohuslän and the province’s largest city. It’s extremely easy to have an enjoyable time here. In this magazine, you can get a glimpse of our restaurants and cafés, our top shopping locations, and our major events. We also hope to inspire you to take a leisurely stroll with a city tour of Uddevalla or take advantage of the nearby adventures at sea with Ljungskile as the starting point. With Uddevalla as a base, you can hike, bike and/or paddle in our beautiful countryside, or pay a visit to one of the many charming fishing communities along the Bohuslän coast. In Uddevalla, you will find Sweden’s oldest seaside resort, Gustafsberg – dating from the 1700s. At Gustafsberg, you can spend time enjoying the historic environment, stunning architecture, and the breathtaking views of the Uddevalla bridge and Byfjorden. You can swim in the ocean here, sit down for a proper meal, or grab a snack. Don’t miss the opportunity to take a walk along the beautiful Boardwalk, which we are so very proud of – you can walk right out to the nicest swimming area, Lindesnäs. Consider taking the boat to Gustafsberg from the quay in the centre. The archipelago boats are operating in the inner archipelago throughout the summer – in Uddevalla, life is salty and delicious!

Ljungskile between the sea & the mountains
At the base of Bredfjället, in the straits between Orust and the mainland, there is a bay. At the bay one finds the tiny small community of Ljungskile. Ljungskile has a past as bathing and spa resort. The climate, as it was expressed back in the day, was balmy. It was the mixture of the coniferous forest and sea air, along with the protected location, that was unique. And even if the heyday of spa resort belongs to a bygone era, one cannot but agree that there is something special about Ljungskile.
TO THE FOREST & MOUNTAINS Despite its small size, Ljungskile offers nature experiences of distinctly different kinds. For those who are keen on hiking in the woods and fields, the Norra Fjället farm offers an excellent starting point to the hiking and recreational area Bredfjället. The farm, which dates back to the 1600s, has been the centre of Ljungskile Outdoors Club since the 1960s and the starting out point for several trails in the area. The mountain offers, among other things, woodlands and old agricultural landscape with a cottage ruins and traces of old farms. There are both coniferous and deciduous forests and if one follows Tjöstelrödsbäcken from the Skarsjöarna lakes and below, one finds Silverfallet – a fifteen feet high waterfall very close to the outlet of Little Skärsjön. These are outing-friendly fields with wellmarked trails and tracks, perfect for both day trips as well as longer hikes. One can take their evening swim here in one of the glassy forest lakes or walk along 4 Uddevalla&DU
the ancient roundpole fences. Gather your breath here and listen to the cries of the black-throated loons or the chirping of the capercaillies. CRAB FISHING, KAYAKING AND A SALTY SAFARI If you’d like to go out to sea, Ljungskile is naturally a truly excellent starting point. You can, for example, learn to kayak in a sea kayak – Ljungskile Friluftsfrämjande offers courses for both beginners and experienced paddlers at its kayak centre in Kallbadhuset. Departing from here, one finds day trips and evening trips, as well as longer trips, and “kayak test days” can be arranged from here. But sea kayaking is far from the only way to get around in the waters off Ljungskile – sailing is very popular at the resort and there are sailing schools for both adults and youth during the summer season. For those without either paddling or sailing skills who want to go out to sea, Skärgårdsbåtarnas Ljungskiletur - Archi-
pelago Ferries Ljungskiletur is an enjoyable alternative. M/S Gustafsberg - a charming centenarian with a steam whistle, shiny brass and mahogany details – plies Ljungskile’s inner archipelago during the summer months. Consider the two-hour tour, with the possibility of go ashore at various places along the coast for bathing as well as for those who want to fish for crabs. But the most exciting of the various maritime activities must surely be the mussel expeditions. Starting out from the historic spa environment at the clock tower on Lyckorna, you can come with M/S Martha out to Scanfjord’s mussel farms in the fjord landscape. On the expedition, you will be involved in harvesting mussels, cleaning and preparing them, and then finally enjoy the freshest delights in the cosy restaurant Musselbaren, with homemade bread and newly cut aioli. Everything under the supervision of skipper Janne, who talks about everything he knows about plus a little more, both about mussels as well as the surroundings.

LOCALLY PRODUCED FOR GOURMETS Far up on Lyckorna, in Villa Sjötorp – an insanely beautiful summer residence from the last century – one finds Ellika Mogenfeldt. Ellika runs a hotel and restaurant here with a focus on organic and locally farmed produce. The hotel prides itself with its 14 individualised rooms, furnished with original features but without sacrificing comfort and quality. And with a tavern that offers the best there is to offer in the neighbourhood in the way of beverages and food. And did we mention that it is mentioned in both the White Guide as well as in Sveriges Bästa Bord (Sweden’s Best Restaurants). For those in search of something slightly simpler, but a similar locally produced and delicious meal, we recommend Café Flora, which is located on the main street in Ljungskile village. In an old red ochre warehouse you will find the café with a beautiful large lawn at the rear. It serves lunches and light meals plus amazing homemade pastries and other baked goods of all kinds. Taste an organic elderflower soda or sip on an

ice-cold beer from a local microbrewery and enjoy!! Close to the Café Flora one finds the trendy furnishings shop Sprudla, which is well worth a visit! For the coffee lover who wants an experience, Maurtiz Coffee right in the centre of Ljungskile is a place where you will certainly get a refreshing and tasty cup of Joe! Whether it is a gourmet dinner in the villa, a small snack at Flora, or self-harvested mussels at the Musselbaren, we promise that you will never have to go hungry or thirsty in Ljungskile. There are also even more cosy cafés and small restaurants, and the Tourist Hotel voluminous beers attracts hipsters from all over the region. ICE CREAM, GOLF AND FOOTBALL If, contrary to all expectations, you get tired of amazing adventures in the varied nature and with authentic, locally produced food experiences, there are of course more and different kinds of things to find in Ljungskile. Lyckorna Golf Club, is one, for example, with both an 18-hole golf course and a 9-hole pay’n’play
providing challenges and amazing views for both members and guests. An enchanting beautiful seaside/parkland golf course with a nice restaurant to replenish forces after the round. Perhaps you would like to take this opportunity to see a football game with LSK? The proud club with heart and commitment plays in the Premier League. If you like, take a beach promenade all the way to Laxbutiken for an inspiring meal, which advantageously terminates at the shop’s enormous ice cream buffet, where young and old can pick their own favourite toppings to enjoy on the terrace by the water. Take the opportunity to visit the unique interior design store on Kärrstegens Manor Home while you’re on that side of the bay. In a beautiful old house, every corner is filled with gadgets and knickknacks – one more fancy than the other. There are plants here along with interior decoration items, and in the barn there is a delicatessen and cosy café! Ljungskile is a small town with a big heart. There is, in addition to the balmy climate, lots to experience and enjoy here.

food city Uddevalla
No matter whether you are in Uddevalla on a long vacation, a weekend trip, or just passing through, there is every reason to stop and take the opportunity to eat a bite or two while you are here. The city offers dining experiences of all kinds – from typical regional cuisine, the freshest fish and seafood dishes, to more globally-oriented food adventures at one of the city’s many restaurants. One thing that you really need to set aside the time for when visiting our city is a proper snack – something traditional like a coffee and cinnamon bun, or perhaps a trendy and health-inspired one, with green tea and raw pastry… Welcome to the food city, Uddevalla – exercise your taste buds!
beverage ample food &
A bite to eat in the company of good friends, a romantic dinner with someone you love, or with the entire family a long on a lazy Sunday afternoon? We recommend Kerstin on the square for those extra beautiful pendants – maybe chill out in the lounge, or sunbathe one’s nose at the openair café? The hours easily disappear here while enjoying classic home cooking, with an ice-cold beer or two on the couch or in the sunshine. Or why not try the latest in technology, while munching snacks at Pinchos? Here,
10 Uddevalla&DU
you order and pay with your smartphone, and the offerings consist of delicious side dishes from around the world. Socialise over the table’s boundaries while munching on everything from dumplings to planked steak. To quench your thirst, consider a pitcher of sangria? Download the Pincho app and check out the menu now! The history and design-conscious will get one’s fill of industrial nostalgic at the Varvet by Butlers, where one can easily remain long into the night. Food, drink and music in a pleasant and unpretentious
environment, inspired by Uddevallavarvet – once the city’s largest workplace. Share a BBQ plate with your buddies before the evening begins, so you’ll have the strength to keep going all night long! Another evening hangout we warmly recommend is Meatings at Hotel Carlia – their luxurious evening buffet is a must for meat lovers. Here you can freely choose between different cuts and cooking modes – all carved in place by the chefs. Perfect after a long day of sightseeing, or perhaps after a salty day at sea.
snack & enjoy
In sugar sweet premises, precisely in the centre of town, you will find Leja’s Café – inspired by the renown TV chef Leila Lindholm. Here it is home cooking, homemade bakery products, and organic all the way. Fresh ground coffee, divine pastries and a wide variety of lactose-free and gluten-free items on the menu. In addition, salads and sandwiches are served, and in the summer you can enjoy Lejonet & Björnen’s great ice cream! In a timbered house from the 1800s, with a cosy courtyard, we find Blomsterkrokens café. The café offers a lunch set, á la carte, or
snacks in a unique and inspiring environment. In addition, they organise whiskey tastings and more in the evenings, and for shopaholics there is a super great interior decor store adjacent to the café. Expect to get a really genuine Uddevalla coffee at Wienerkonditoriet at the corner of Kungsgatan and Kochska gränden. Uddevalla residents have been buying bread and pastries here since ancient times and everything sold is produced in-house at the local Dahlberg’s bakery. Take time for a snack of traditionally brewed coffee and a freshly
baked cinnamon bun, in traditional patisserie environment. And don’t miss the opportunity to take an Uddevalla loaf home with you! Perhaps you are more of a tea drinker? Or maybe fancy a refreshment in the green? Then it’s Yerba you should go to. In a 1700 house with a lovely garden in the back, right in the centre of Uddevalla, afternoon teas, lunches, hot meals and refreshments are served. Additionally, Yerba holds art exhibitions, and has books and a wide range of beneficial teas and coffee beans from around the world available for purchase.

eat with the
kids & family Hungry kids and large groups? There are lots of places in Uddevalla to satisfy the hunger of a family. If you fancy something small, say a little snack or maybe a scoop of ice cream, or perhaps three, the Hamnkafét - Harbour Café is right here for you. With Badhusparken’s first-rate playground right next to here, this is the place for parents to catch their breath, while the younger generation is off running, jumping and swinging for a while. Even with a family, Pinchos can fit in well with its range of small dishes –it is easy here to satisfy the most discerning small taste

buds, as everything is served in mini-format and you can order precisely what you want, all to your heart’s desire! Or why not take in a super decent lunch at Kärranäs Restaurant on Fröland and Pinin Farinas old grounds? Ideal for drivers! At Coffee Roomer the environment is attractive and the offerings on the menu perfect for a hungry family – while the parents are happily eating the famous pasta salads (perhaps with homemade Karl-Johans Pesto?), the kids pick out their favourites in a children’s pasta, or are munching away on pancakes
with ice cream. And while we’re talking about ice cream, we must highlight Lejas at Kungstorget again. Where one will find namely – in addition to Lejonet & Björnen’s ice cream – even Fro-yo! For those who have not yet learned the slang term for this wonderful phenomenon, we simply have to explain: Frozen Yogurt – a delightful soft ice cream-like frozen yogurt with select yourself toppings (fruit, berries, candy and all kinds of goodies) are sold according to weight. A real life lifesaver in the summer heat.
experience & eat
Maybe you’re hungry for more than just food – a large part of the dining experience is made by the surroundings one is in, and sometimes even the way there. Take a promenade along the Boardwalk or a boat from the centre of town to Gustafsberg, and here you will get to enjoy Uddevalla’s most beautiful side. Once there, you can choose to have lunch or a simple snack at Snäckan, which tempts with everything from the catch of the day’s fish and herring buffet to homebaked delights to enjoy with the coffee. Want to enjoy watching the sunset on
Gustafsberg and add little lapping waves to the experience? We recommend an outing with an archipelago ferry boat and a visit to Villa Lindesnäs – à la carte and full meals guarantee a comfortable evening in a wonderful turn of the century environment. Perhaps walk here, but then take the boat back? The archipelago ferries also offer seafood cruises during the summer months – a three hour tour among islets and rocks, with the freshest prawns, langoustines and lovely accompaniments… If you crave a little culture with your
food, the restaurant Kajkanten is a place you definitely should visit. The restaurant serves authentic home cooking, with traditional Bohuslän elements, with a salad buffet and homemade bread. When your stomach becomes satisfied, just step over into the Bohuslän Museum – located in the same building – and satisfy your cultural hunger. Here you will find permanent exhibitions covering Bohuslän’s natural and cultural history along with both permanent collections as well as travelling art exhibitions of various kinds.

Do you go on holiday accompanied by children? If so, there is a number of exciting activities and trips suitable for children of all ages right around Uddevalla. Here you can find a selection of what Uddevalla has to offer and if you would like to know more, simply visit uddevalla.com for more information and a dash of inspiration... A large and popular playground exists in BADHUSPARKEN for children with energy and vigour. Just next to it is HAMNKAFÉT, a café that is open in the summer and serves copious amounts of coffee and ice cream! A few steps away is the Uddevalla Guest Harbour with its fantastic array of majestic ships and barges. Here you can hop onto one of UDDEVALLA’S ARCHIPELAGO BOATS and go on a cruise to some of the islets and skerries in Uddevalla’s beautiful inner archipelago. The boats can take you to several of Uddevalla’s many beaches where you can fully relish Bohuslän’s summer. Take advantage of the opportunity to try out CRAB FISHING the way we do it in Bohuslän – all you need is a clothes peg, a length of cord and a bucket! Meet even more animals at EMAUS FARM where you can get to know micro pigs, ducks, rabbits and cats up close. You might even be daring enough to go for a ride on one of the ponies. Everyone is welcome here all year round and all the activities are free of charge. The wide, open spaces offer plenty of room for running and playing. Bring along your picnic basket or something to grill to one of our barbecue and coffee spots. If you’re lucky you might get to see a large moose in the vicinity too! The MOOSE AF ANNERÖD moose park is situated north of Uddevalla and accommodates moose in their natural environment. In addition to watching moose, you can also have a meal and a coffee in the garden and pick up some souvenirs in the gift shop. If the weather is a bit too grey and sulky, you can visit the BOHUSLÄN MUSEUM in the middle of Uddevalla’s city centre, which is within close proximity of shops and cosy cafés. Here you can see child-friendly exhibitions about Bohuslän’s history, wildlife and nature. There is also a popular playroom with, among other things, a steamship that toots its horn before departure. Let your children’s fantasies have free rein before giving them a chance to recharge their batteries again at the pleasant KAJKANTEN RESTAURANT that is just a stone’s throw away. For those of you who just cannot get enough of laughter and play, there is STELLAS LEKLAND in Kuröd, Uddevalla. Here the children can play safely to their heart’s content with everything from dives into ball pools to bold negotiations of
dizzying suspension bridges! There is nothing that tastes more of summer than strawberries, and don’t they taste great if you pick them yourself? SKAFTERÖDS GÅRD in Ljungskile is a pick-and-park farm where you can gather up the most delicious strawberries during the summer season. Ljungskile is also home to children’s absolute favourite – namely the large ice CREAM CAFÉ right next to Laxbutiken where soft scoop ice cream is available in just about any flavour. The counter of ice cream toppings with its jams, sprinkles, meringues, sweets and whipped cream is just as popular. Mmm! At Bokenäset in Uddevalla, we find the HAFSTENS SWECAMP RESORT, which offers a number of different activities, from a child-friendly sandy beach, to a sauna, crazy golf, a water slide and canoeing. The Hafstens Swecamp Resort is also a perfect place to stay when you travel with your family! Uddevalla has many challenges in store for families that enjoy competitions. For example, you can play CRAZY GOLF on a challenging course at Skeppsviken near the city centre. Once the game is over, you can take a dip in the sea via the neighbouring beach or enjoy a refreshing ice cream from the nearby booth. If you want to test your strength in a pentathlon LANE LOGE is a must. Here you can play football, golf, race wheelbarrows or wooden horses, or try out the ultimate challenge of stacking tyres or sawing logs whilst making the most of the green expanses and endless family games! And if you’re a speed demon, then the GLIMMINGEN MOTOR STADIUM is the place for you. Here you can drive a go-kart and go round and round as many times as you like on one of Sweden’s largest and most fun-filled racetracks. Book in advance or just drop in whenever you can! The minimum height for children is 125 cm. And for people who like the beach, Uddevalla offers sun-warmed cliffs, sand between the toes and endless sunbathing! Why not enjoy a plunge in the city on the way home from shopping or a dip in the evening with a beautiful sunset in the background? What type of a beachgoer are you? There are so many beaches to choose from in Uddevalla. The choice is yours... Uddevalla&DU 17

uddevalla solid sound one of bohuslän’s largest music festivals
Uddevalla Solid Sound, a two-day music festival held at Riversideängen in central Uddevalla, kicks off on 12 June for the fourth year in a row. Youngsters and adults from all over western Sweden and beyond are expected to come out in force to share in the joy of togetherness, where the primary focus will be on enjoying watching Sweden’s elite artists take centre stage. Some of the guest performers this year include Swedish rock icons Thåström, Familjen, Love Antell, Looptroop Rockers, Beatrice Eli, Silvana Imam and
many others. Something new this year is Uddevalla Solid Sound’s festival camping at Skeppsviken, just a stone’s throw away from one of Uddevalla’s most popular beaches for taking a dip thanks to its majestic vista of Byfjorden Bay and the Uddevalla Bridge. Come to Uddevalla 12-13 of June and enjoy Bohuslän’s largest music festival, salt baths and fantastic beach atmosphere! You can learn more about the event and buy tickets at www.uddevallasolidsound.se
turn-of-the-century days in a beach environment
gustafsbergsdagarna Gustafsberg in Uddevalla is Sweden’s oldest seaside resort and a popular haunt with its roots dating back to the 18th century. Many people used to flock here attracted by the salt baths and the water from the mineral spring that was considered to cure most afflictions. It was not only well-off families that came to Gustafsberg. The resort was even visited by royal families and celebrities like botanist

Carl von Linné. Guests stayed for several weeks at a time enjoying not only the salt baths but also strolls in the park, musical soirées and theatre performances as well as resplendent balls in the Society Lounge (Societetssalongen). Today Gustafsberg is Uddevalla’s pride and joy! The resort now boasts restaurants, a cosy café and naturally the beautiful seaside promenade (Strand-
promenaden) that winds its way along the shoreline. Gustafsbergsdagarna, which is held between 8 and 9 August every year, pays tribute to seaside life, with guided tours around the beautiful local houses, traditional games, entertainment and much more. Take part in the exciting events and relish the many accounts of Gustafsberg’s heyday!

sing-along in museum park fellowship, singing and music
Our Sing-along is something special! And even though it certainly is cosy with the Sing-alongs at Skansen and Liseberg, it’s the Sing-along in Museiparken (Museum Park) that’s most important for us in Uddevalla! Last year it was a super great success with local residents as well as with our visitors, and this summer’s Sing-along is back! The Museum Park in Uddevalla is an absolutely perfect place for being together with others in fellowship, with singing and music. And with the water close by where the archipelago boats service calls at the landing, the 24 Uddevalla&DU
audience gets a proper summer feeling. Everyone is welcome to participate in this summer’s most wonderful songs along with Örjan’s orchestra. Each Sing-along evening hosts a local artist to the event in order to brighten the evening up a little bit extra. Pack up a lovely picnic basket and take it with you, and don’t forget your happy mood nor to invite your friends to come along so that it becomes a summer evening you will never ever forget! This summer there will be singing at our Sing-alongs on four Thursday evenings in a row, starting on 25 June.
sailboats with only two crewmembers, in Uddevalla. Along the quay, yachtsmen will be wandering around and in the Museum Park, there will be a Sing-along and entertainment. During Uddevalla Water Week there will be an opportunity for everyone to try out various different water sports, such as sailing, rowing and wakeboarding – why not challenge each other? You will obtain information and knowledge here about many different fun water activities. Enjoy the summer hustle and bustle of the Uddevalla town centre.

Name: Mattias Hoppe Age: 23 Family: Mother, father and six siblings, two of whom join him to form the Breddas Team Education: Brinellskolan in Uddevalla and Wakeboardgymnasiet in Fagersta Motto: With a shared interest and a shared goal, your dreams are within reach
brothers on boards
Mattias and his brothers have always led an active life. While they were growing up, they engaged in all kinds of sporting activities, everything from diving to gymnastics – everything that was acrobatic was fun. But somewhere along the way, they got tired of the constrictions and rules, thinking that there must be other, more free roads to take – without the focus on scoring points and regular predetermined training schedules... Where desire and interest was able to govern, and the focus was on having fun. Three of them fell for wakeboarding and today they are professional – each one of them. Mattias is the middle-brother. Born and raised in Uddevalla, and with a spring in his step and somersaults in his body since childhood. When big brother Benjamin found out that wakeboarding was a cool way to keep his snowboarding form in shape during the summer months, he was not slow to get hooked on it. Together with little brother Jeremia, they became a team. That they became interested in extreme sports was a natural development. Mattias explains: “We have always been extremely physically active and engaged in acrobatic sports. But it quickly becomes serious in that kind of context. The fun – giddiness – disappears as well on the way. When we got a little older and more mature, we felt that it was better for us to do our training regimen alone by ourselves, though of course together with each other. Because we were coaching each other, this meant that we could do this at the times that best suited us, and we were able to play around with stuff, go with what we thought was fun and worthwhile. Yea, so that’s how we ended up getting involved with wakeboarding.” And what does one do when one wants to train, but there are no training facilities? You build one yourself of course. When the oldest of the three middle brothers wanted to balance the winters’ snowboarding with something to be active with in the summers, the brothers quite simply built a cable system to run the wakeboarding on, in their backyard at home. Sweden’s first, actually. “Yea, the park is one of the projects we ope26 Uddevalla&DU
rate in parallel with our professional careers. We never want to be entirely dependent upon sponsors. In such a situation, you have to be competing all the time and actual competition – to be judged and be compared, this is something that none of us really likes. The competition to win aspect doesn’t belong in extreme sports; it takes away some of the charm in that it is an open and free sport, where one gets to express their feelings in the skiing. So we try to find ways to keep doing this without having to compete all too much.” Today, the brothers operate the Wake Park, travel around to different competitions, and themselves organise an event that has significantly grown in size over the years. Mattias explains: “It all started with that we wanted to gather our friends and celebrate that we were about to finish building the park, actually. As an inauguration of sorts. The first year we had maybe fifty people here, who tried it out and we had a great time together one week in July. That was a long five years ago. This year, we anticipate that somewhere between fifteen hundred and two thousand people will show up here. So it’s grown quite a bit. This year we have a brand new judging structure and approach – it’s one of the most fun things about organising an event such as this kind – that you actually get to be involved in shaping the sport!” To an outsider, the brothers’ lives perhaps seem like something out of a dream. They have managed the feat to find a passion, educate themselves in it, and in fact – all three – to feed
themselves from it. How does one succeed with such, we wonder? “I think that it is about establishing clear goals and then accomplishing them one by one. Every time you reach a goal, you get the strength to move on to the next one. And with this, it is good to have someone to share things with. Alone is not always the strongest. We have been able to share the energy and motivation with each other. The ups and downs. The successes and setbacks. And that we have always set our own direction, dared to do differently, sailed a bit against the wind.” Breddas is Jamaican for “brothers.” It became the name of the brand and their trademark, which has grown in pace with the brothers making a business out of their passion. Today, they divide their time between professional competitions, their own training regimen, and running the wakeboarding park (still) behind the house, at home in Uddevalla. The park is open to the public and everyone with an interest is welcome.” “This is a very welcoming sports – the oldest that has been with us to try it out was 70 years old! We usually have a mishmash of visitors, ranging from thoroughbred professionals to new beginners. Our website features all the information you’ll need if you want to come and give it a try. The park is a way for us to share the most fun thing we know; we have the world’s coolest backyard and are really keen to share it with as many people as possible!”
At Breddas Wake Park, you can engage in wakeboarding, try out the water jump, play volleyball, soak in a hot tub, jump on trampolines, barbecue, participate in the Battle of the Backyard, and much, much more. There are camping activities here along with the possibility to stay overnight. The park is open to the public and its opening hours, booking information and prices are available on their website:

Right next door, around the corner is Antik-Harrys, with its glittering chandeliers and clocks that chime out of time with each other. This is where collectors come from around the world, looking for gadgets with a capital G! Further up, on the same street Da Capo Second Hand & Hantverk throws open its doors and offers, in addition to its range of second-hand goods, homemade ceramics and textile products. To the south there’s another shop well worth a visit, NostalgiMakarna (the Nostalgia Pair) 30 Uddevalla&DU
with curiosities from the 1900s in general, and from the 50s, 60s and 70s, in particular. Pingstkyrkans Second Hand is perhaps Uddevalla’s most popular second hand store. On Tuesdays and Saturdays, when it’s open, there’s a long queue outside waiting for the doors to open. Another tip for the bargain hunter is to look out for the flea market (loppis) signs along the highways and in farmyards. During the summer flea markets tend to pop up all over Bohuslän. EXPERIENCE THE PULSE OF THE HEART OF THE CITY! Right in the middle of Uddevalla and in the heart of Bohuslän lies the Torp market area for the people who want buy new goods and experience the pulse of the heart of the city! Bokenäset a gem in the middle of Bohuslän
Dark green beech forests and a coniferous fragrance, a cultural landscape with ancient monuments and blue-grey cliffs at the fjord’s edge – Bokenäset is Bohuslän in a nutshell. Explore the traces of times gone by while enjoying nature’s dramatic variability, or treat yourself to a moment of welldeserved relaxation at the edge of the shore. Bokenäset offers both contrasts as well as harmony.
Local folklore tells that it was just from Havsten cliff – which from 119 metres above sea level there is a sheer drop into Havstensfjord – Odin sent his ravens Hugin and Munin on a reconnaissance mission. Whatever the truth of this story, the cliff is well worth a visit – to stand at the top, with the wind in your hair and the sun on your face, is like balm for the soul. Below – at the Hafsten SweCamp Resort – you can feel pampered with spa treatments and a whirlpool, or rent a kayak or canoe. You can book riding tours or pedal with a pedal boat, soak in a hot tub or ride down the waterslide. The Hafsten Resort offers camping and cabins, a pub, restaurants and a variety of activities. During the summer months, troubadour evenings are offered during the evening out on the open-air 34 Uddevalla&DU
restaurant. How about experiencing Bokenäset on foot or from the saddle of a bicycle? There are hiking trails and bike paths around the area. Maybe choose to take a trip to Bokenäs Old Church – a medieval granite church dating from the 1100s, a vestibule from the 1600s and preserved details from the 1700s, both internally and externally. One of Bohuslän’s best preserved medieval churches, well worth a visit. Are you ready for shopping with rural charm? Then you are in for a treat when you visit Två Fröknars lovely home decor shop, where Eva-Lena and Lillemor have filled a warehouse with the absolute latest in interior decoration fittings. And while you are there, check out the homemade snacks being served in its cosy café.
The Boat Museum at Bassholmen boasts a beautiful collection of allmogebåtar – traditional peasantry boats, and during the summer months, visitors are treated to all sorts of activities in the surroundings. Bassholmen is worth a visit in and of itself. It is situated in a location that is protected from the sea but surrounded by flowing water. With lovely environments for gentle hikes and birdwatching, it is a very popular destination in the region. During the summer months, Skärgårdsbåtarna [Archipelago Ferries] organises daily cruises to Bassholmen. The tours depart from the centre of Uddevalla. No matter what part of Bokenäset you choose to visit, you are close to the sea and to nature. There are experiences for all the senses here – a gem in the middle of Bohuslän.

THE GIRL WITH BRAIDS
In Margretegärdeparken Park, we are greeted by a female statue that has stood here in the middle of the fountain since its inauguration on May Day Eve 1949. It was Uddevalla shipyard’s founder Gustaf Thordén who donated the artwork to the city. “The Girl with Braids” was created by sculptor Matti Haupt, who has also adorned Sörkälle Park with a female bronze statue.
THE CLOCK TOWER
On Agneberget, a mighty stone tower rises watching over the city. When Uddevalla extended its city limits at a fast pace during the herring period in the 1700s, it was necessary for the church bells to get high enough to be heard by everyone. The year 1751, on the tower’s south side, testifies to the inaugural year for Uddevalla’s well-known landmark.
KOCHSKA ALLEY
In July 1806, Uddevalla was hit by a devastating town fire. In this neighbourhood stood pharmacist Bergius’ barn, which was the starting point for the catastrophe. The town’s 4,000 residents became homeless in a staggering blow and the city needed over 50 years to recover. A great help was when Major Mikael Koch helped start up Kampenhofs cotton spinning mill and textile factory along Västerlånggatan.
MARGRETELUND
The devastating city fire of 1806 destroyed almost the whole of Uddevalla. Margretelund is the city’s oldest building and the only one in central Uddevalla that still remains from before the city fire. The property was built in 1724 and is named after Ms Margareta Simzon, the wife of the merchant Jöns Koch.
THE ARCHIPELAGO BOATS
Uddevalla’s archipelago boats have trafficked in the fjords since the 1800s, and since then have i.a. been running scheduled services between central Uddevalla and the historic seaside resort Gustafsberg. Today, there are three archipelago ferries in Uddevalla, which during the summers can be found sailing our beautiful archipelago. Go on a cruise or go out to one of Uddevalla’s beautiful bathing beaches!
UDDEVALLA SHIPYARDS
From Svenskholmem, one can look across the water towards the old shipyard area from the 1940s. Today it is part of the Port of Uddevalla, but was also the site of the first town by the Byfjorden. It received city rights in 1498 under the name Oddevold.

THE STATUE AT THE ROYAL SQUARE
A double statue which reminds one of the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658, where among other things, Bohuslän became Swedish. King Carl X Gustav sits on the horse and alongside stands the king’s advisor chief engineer officer Erik Dahlberg. The bronze statue was made by Professor Teodor Lundberg from Stockholm. The opening ceremony dedicating the statute was held on 31 August 1915 amid great pomp and circumstance.
It hides a fascinating history among Uddevallas streets. Here beside you will find a city map with twelve locations well worth a visit. Walk from Kungstorget in the center, along thepopular boardwalk out to Gustafsberg – with the magazine in your hand, you can take part of Uddevalla’s history. Whether you are a native of Uddevalla or a visitor - this walk is an awesome experience!
THE OLD BATHHOUSE
A hot bath-house was built in 1907 by the newly formed Uddevalla bathhouse company. The intention was that the town’s residents would have access to the hot bath all year round. Public swimming side-by-side with the children’s swimming school in a building decorated in the Art Nouveau style.
THE BOARDWALK
Below the old entrance to Uddevalla, the Boardwalk meander. A walkway was built in 2006 to connect the bathing areas Skeppsviken and Bodele. At the same time, the accessibility of the former spa and beach resort Gustafsberg was increased, one of the city’s gems.
THE RYBERGSKA CASTLE
The name comes from the Ryberg family, known provision dealers, who owned the house during the years 1915-1982. The Petterssonska house had been a more fitting one as John Pettersson had built the building in 1904. Pettersson ran the nearby ropewalk and had built one of the first and largest oil storage tanks in the country. Its foundation is still there at the foot of the Lövåsberget mountain.
THE GREAT HOT-BATH HOUSE
In 1814, the Great Hot-Bath House was inaugurated in an attempt to be able to catch up with the increasing number of bathers who travelled to Gustafsberg. One bathed here in a hot bath, but even seaweed baths, mud baths and more were offered. At this “spa facility” there was also the opportunity to drink from nature wells, eat good food, and take invigorating walks in the picturesque surroundings.
THE SCHOOL BULDING ON GUSTAFSBERG
The current school building in brick was erected in 1897 after its predecessor burned to the ground. The children’s house institution with the school was founded in 1776 by the couple, Anders Knape Hansson and his wife Catharina, née Hegardt. There were dormitories and classrooms in the house for the “Gustafsberg boys,” as they were known.
