Experience Uddevalla this summer! Uddevalla offers a unique location in the heart of Bohuslän. A hub for anyone who wants to explore the region. With 270 kilometres of coastline there is plenty to do in or out the water. Explore the fjords, archipelago, mountains and forests from one place. You can canoe, sail, fish, cycle, walk, climb and lots more. Byfjord winds its way right into the centre of town which has shopping, culture and nightlife to offer. This is where the ferries that take you around the archipelago depart from. For those that prefer to be beside the water there is a beautiful promenade along the coastline. There is also excellent hiking at Herrestadsfjället, Bredfjället and Bokenäset. The terrain is also perfect for challenging runs. Fishing is a part of everyday life for many people. Sea fishing is a given, but the inland lakes also offer superb fishing with game fish, perch and pike. You can also enjoy the water from a kayak, or why not go on a mussel expedition? This magazine introduces some of the wonderful people that live here. You will get tips about restaurants, cafés, events and hidden treasures.

THE SKÄRGÅRDSBÅTARNA CHRISTIAN GJERDRUM
About the Skärgårdsbåtarna (Archipelago boats) Skärgårdsbåtarna (Archipelago boats) started in 1876. There are three boats in operation: M/S SUNNINGEN, M/S GUSTAFSBERG II and M/S BYFJORDEN.
FOOD is served on M/S Byfjorden. KIOSK is available on the other boats. A maximum of three BIKES may be taken aboard.
THE SUMMER TOURS run between 14 MAY and 25 SEPTEMBER. The Skärgårdsbåtarna also run CHARTERED TRIPS for weddings, birthday celebrations, corporate days etc.
The paradise island of Bassholmen Bassholmen at Nordströmmarna is really worth a visit. It is a nature reserve where cows and calves keep the landscape clear. There is an ice cream parlour, a boat museum and exciting history. The Skärgårdsbåtarna make trips here and there is also a guest harbour on the island, if you wish to use your own boat to get here.
Chef Fredrik Sjöström and captain Christian Gjerdrum.
”Food and boats is my thing” It is Christian Gjerdrum's good fortune that delicious food is served on-board M/S Byfjorden. He got tired of serving microwave food and instead served his homemade fish soup one summer. Today there is a proper galley with a talented chef on board. They have collated all the best recipes in two books. "The food experience is an important part of the boat journey. On-board M/S Byfjorden we always serve lunch, and our shellfish cruises and Christmas tours with a sill lunch are usually booked up fast. Our chef Fredrik Sjöström is very talented", says Christian Gjerdrum. Christian has always been interested in food and also cooks during his time off. With Fredrik he has collated the Skärgårdsbåtarna's best recipes in two cook books, which also include anecdotes from Uddevalla's archipelago history. UNEXPECTED VISIT BY FIN WHALE Despite 32 years at the helm of Skärgårdsbåtarna, Christian still discovers new things in the archipelago everyday. Sometimes, unusual creatures appear, such as peregrine falcons, sea eagles, dolphins and porpoises. "I think the most surprised I, as well as the passengers, have been was when a ten metre 4 Uddevalla&DU
long fin whale suddenly appeared in front of the boat one summer's day. They usually stick to open sea. It is more common to see seals near Slussen," explains Christian.
children and during those hours the family can have a lot of fun together. Why not take bikes onto the boat to Lysekil or Smögen and combine with a shopping trip?"
CHRISTIAN'S FAVOURITE PLACES What Christian enjoys most about his job, apart from his nice work mates, is meeting the travellers and showing off Uddevalla from the water. "People are always happy and usually a little curious about the places we call at. It is fun relating Gustafsberg's history, giving tips for beaches and the best fishing spots. My own favourite swimming spot is by Stången, a little way from the quay there is a great little sandy beach which seldom has many people." "For families with children it can be fun to park the car and instead take the boat to Lyckorna in Ljungskile or to Hafsten. The boat trips are the perfect duration for
EVENTFUL HOLIDAYS "More and more people want to go on an eventful weekend journey where food, accommodation and activities are included. Some book a night at Slussen where a lot of well-known musicians play during the summer. The trip to the car-free and beautiful Käringön is probably our most popular destination." Christian has a thousand tips for great places and mentions one more; Stillingsön – a forgotten gem where time seems to have stood still. "One can swim and take it easy there. There may not be much to do, but occasionally that is exactly the point.
Skärgårdsbåtarna summer tours Park the car, jump on a boat and enjoy Uddevalla's archipelago and many other beautiful locations in Bohuslän. There are lots of routes to choose from. The archipelago tour takes you to genuine coastal communities, great bathing spots, nature reserves, restaurants and cafés. The boats leave from Södra hamnen in Uddevalla and visit the quays at SVENSKHOLMEN, GUSTAFSBERG, LINDESNÄS, SUND, SKÄRET, AMMENÄS, STÅNGEN, UNDA and SUNNINGEN. Trips also depart from Södra hamnen in Uddevalla to:
HAFSTEN RESORT ON BOKENÄS KÄRINGÖN BASSHOLMEN AND LYSEKIL SMÖGEN SLUSSEN AND LJUNGSKILE The Ljungskile trip departs from LYCKORNA in Ljungskile to STILLINGSÖN, ULVÖN and SLUSSEN. More information and the current timetable are available at: skargardsbatarna.com

”Everything I need is in Uddevalla”
The food town of Uddevalla If you like food and going out for coffee you have come to the right place. Uddevalla has lots of cafés and restaurants of different types. Here are some tips:
known musicians and artists often play. The interior design shop
LIVING ROOM. The salads and coffee at COFFEE ROOMER.
PINCHOS – snacks from all corners of the world. HARRYS has à la carte food and music for all the
family.
Clothes designer, middle school teacher, disc jockey, cartoonist, film maker… The list of Samuel Stålros' different jobs is long and impressive. He is a creator and entrepreneur who chose to move back to Uddevalla after a number of years in Gothenburg. In Uddevalla he has his family, the summer house and balance to life.
CAFÉ YERBA serves food and snacks in an eighteenth century house and its garden. VARVET BY BUTLERS food and drink in an environment inspired by the town's rich tradition of boat building.
MEATINGS at Hotel Carlia has a grill buffet in the evenings for meat lovers.
BLOMSTERKROKEN CAFÉ – snacks and food in a wonderful environment both indoors and in the courtyard.
LEJAS CAFÉ – home baked, home cooked and organic. Cakes and pastries, sandwiches, salads, ice cream…
BALANCE IN LIFE "I practice what I preach. I want to create and affect society in lots of different ways, regardless of whether it is by a memorable message on a t-shirt or by teaching children from different backgrounds and with different personal circumstances how our culture works. It is important to create balance in life – and that was what I have found here in Uddevalla," explains Samuel. LIKES THE PROXIMITY "Living and working in a town that lots of people come to on holiday is not too bad 6 Uddevalla&DU
either. During the summer I can commute with the skärgårdsbåt to our summer house on Lindesnäs. And if I want a swim at lunch time it only takes a few minutes to walk to Skeppsviken swimming spot next to the Strandpromenad. It is a luxury to be so close to everything." With two young daughters, two and five, the Stålros family usually takes trips to places that the children enjoy. Because they live in the centre of town they have lots to choose from nearby. "The playground beside the guest harbour is very popular with the girls and stroking and patting horses and rabbits at Emaus farm is also very exciting. Sometimes we take them to Café Yerba where there is a lovely garden to sit in and the dog can join us. If you want to stay in shape, Uddevalla is an excellent place to live. There are a lot of good gyms and it is easy to combine that with a run along the waterline or a loop through the woods."
UNIQUE CONCEPTS FOR SHOPS AND RESTAURANTS "I like to buy a cup of coffee at Coffee Roomer and go for a walk along the Bäveån with the children and the dog. We can go to the food street market on the square or sit down on the ”Spanish steps” in Hasselbacken and look at the ducks on the other side of the river." Samuel likes the fact that there are lots of good restaurants in town, especially in the summer. He contributes to the nightlife himself by DJing at nightspots and restaurants in Uddevalla. "I think a lot. I enjoy being part of, and contributing to, something – and that is easier in a smaller town. Nothing comes on a plate here, it is up to us to create something. There are therefore unique shops and restaurants in the centre where the owners have developed their own concepts to stand out amongst the chain stores. It is also one of the reasons that we have our own music festival - Solid Sound."
The best PLAYGROUND in town is at TEATERPLANTAGET close to the Guest harbour.

STELLAS LEKLAND is a paradise for all children that like to play and mess around.
Don't miss the Strandpromenad! The pride of Uddevalla, Strandpromenaden was awarded the prize for the most beautiful road in Sweden in 2009. It winds 9 km along the coast from Uddevalla's shell banks down to Lindesnäs. From the town centre to Lindesnäs the promenade goes along the waterline and there are several bathing pots, viewing points, coffee and food places. If you want to walk a shorter distance, park the car at Svenskholmen. Or you can take one of the Skärgårdsbåtarna to one of the quays along the way and walk back to the town centre.

GUSTAFSBERG PROFILE ÅSE MALM
Åse recommends CRAB FISHING at Sörkullen bathing place. BATHE at beautiful LINDESNÄS. PLAY FOOTBALL or BEACH VOLLEYBALL next to Landbadet. Take a BOAT TRIP in Uddevalla's archipelago with the Skärgårdsbåtarna. Rent a KAYAK from Upplevelsebolaget and experience Uddevalla's archipelago from the water. Challenge yourself and your friends to a real adventure in UPPLEVELSELADAN. There are climbing walls, a high walk, king swing and much more.
”Café Snäckan is my dream project” Åse Malm tired of her office job, resigned and thought something would come up. Then an opportunity was presented by the owners of Café Snäckan in Gustafsberg and everything fell into place for Åse. "Running this café was a dream I didn't even know I had", says Åse. After a steep learning curve during the first summer at Café Snäckan, she took over the operation with her family in 2006. Then the café was only open during the summer months. A lot has happened since then. "I saw a big opportunity to develop the café and wanted to try opening all year round. The environment at Gustafsberg also attracts visitors during the winter, spring and autumn. The place means a lot to the residents of Uddevalla and tourists come here to see the old houses and fantasise about how well dressed bathing guests strolled around during the 19th century."
from the County Council and Bohuslän museum. The building is now more modern and functional at the same time as keeping the 18th century spirit. Lots of people take the Strandpromenad between the town centre and Gustafsberg to eat, bathe and enjoy the environment." "In the summertime guests also arrive on the Skärgårdsbåtarna. A number want to have our very popular prawn sandwich, others want the fish of the day which is always fresh. We have great chefs who make all the food, and we use locally produced, organic ingredients as much as we can."
18TH CENTURY HOUSE IN MODERN CONDITION In order to be open all the year round Åse and her family together with the Gustafsberg Foundation invested in the renovation and winterisation of the building that Café Snäckan is located in. It was built in the 18th century and had been used as a summer house among other things. Today it and all the other buildings at Gustafsberg have been listed, with all that that entails. "We had great help with the renovation work
HIDDEN TREASURE FOR MANY There is a lot going on at Gustafsberg during the summer months. Weddings, student balls and other parties are arranged in Societe's house. Those who want to go to sea can rent a kayak from Upplevelsebolaget and join one of their outings or courses. Visitors check into Gustafsberg's Badhotell or the hostel in the old hot bath building. "Gustafsberg really is a hidden treasure. Even if the old bathhouse tradition has not survived, there are lots of bathing spots by
10 Uddevalla&DU
the sea and even bathing pools at Landbadet. This is a perfect destination as an outing for families with children. There is also a great playground, football pitches and large grassed areas to play on." RESTAURANT IN ART NOVEAU VILLA Since 2015, Åse and her family have also run the Villa Lindesnäs restaurant. It is just a few minutes' walk from Café Snäckan and one can even take Skärgårdsbåtarna to the quay at Lindesnäs. Here one can have a three course dinner or just a coffee with waffles. The newly renovated art nouveau villa has a magnificent elevated location with fantastic views over the sea and is perfect for weddings and parties. Her son Robin runs everyday operations at Café Snäckan and Villa Lindesnäs has been a dream to realise. "Running cafés and restaurants has become a lifestyle for me and my family. We work hard and when a I want to clear my head and relax for a minute I walk up to my favourite spot, Knape's view, a little way from the Café Snäckan. From there I can enjoy the spectacular view of the Uddevalla bridge and the inlet to town."
Sweden's oldest seaside resort At the beginning of the 18th century, Gustafsberg' mineral rich water attracted people who wanted to cure lameness, hysteria and rickets. A glass of spring water every quarter or half an hour would do the trick. For extra beneficial effect, during the 1780s one could complement the spring water with sea water bathing. Gustafsberg was Sweden's first seaside resort and was visited by celebrity guests such as Carl von Linné. In 1804, the ailing crown prince Gustav, son of King Gustav IV Adolf, came here for the mineral water and seawater bathing cure. The Crown prince recovered and Gustafsberg received a real boost. In 1814 two hot bathhouses were built. One was more elegant, and today is home to Gustafsberg's Hostel. The other hot bathhouse was called the poor bathhouse and is today called Sjöstugan. One can rent more basic rooms there. The royal visitors meant that Gustafsberg was a very popular resort, including visits from celebrities such as Fredrika Bremer, during the 1830s. Several buildings were constructed for the summer guests. Gustafsberg was a playground with holidaymakers, musical soirees, theatre performances and glamorous balls. Today the Gustafsberg area is part of a nature reserve and 26 buildings are listed as historic buildings. More about Gustafsberg's history, places to stay and activities: gustafsberg.se
LJUNGSKILE PROFILE BIRGITTA RASMUSSON
”Not a summer without swimming in the sea and eating sweet cakes” Birgitta Rasmusson is Sweden's uncrowned queen of baking, she writes baking books and is a judge on the popular TV show ”Hela Sverige bakar” (The Swedish Bake off). She grew up on Restenäs farm in Ljungskile with proper coffee mornings and secret cake recipes. Every summer she moves back to the farm and enjoys swimming in the sea, taking bicycle trips and baking cakes in a woodstove. Birgitta's interest in baking and cookery started at an early age. Her mother and aunts were very good bakers and, as a five year old, Birgitta, on sufferance, was allowed to browse through the oilskin covered copy of ”7 sorters kakor”. She was allowed to start baking ”cheaper” cakes that didn't contain much butter. "I seem to have inherited a cake gene and it has definitely affected my choice of work", says Birgitta. "I wanted to be a language teacher but had second thoughts after I heard a consultant from Findus' test kitchen talking about their job. Cooking and baking sounded like a lot of fun." COOKERY AND BAKING BOOK AUTHOR She ended up at the ICA test kitchen and the ICA-kuriren magazine in Stockholm. She has produced nearly 50 cookery and baking books for the ICA publishing company, including several updated versions of ”7 sorters kakor” (7 sorts of cake), which is Sweden's most sold book. In recent years she has written her own cake book, ”Birgittas bästa”, (Birgitta's best) where she has gathered her own favourite cakes. A new updated version is coming out in the autumn. "I have a fantastic trove of recipes to choose from. Because I grew up with coffee 12 Uddevalla&DU
mornings where ten sorts of cake was not unusual, I have lots of memories associated with different cakes. When my brother and I had our birthdays we were always allowed to choose our favourite cakes for the party." "I have also inherited recipe collections that I am researching. In the olden days it was common to keep cake recipes secret, the old ladies wanted to have their own trump cards." CARES FOR ANCESTRAL HOME Summers in Ljungskile mean a lot to Birgitta and give a contrast to her life in Stockholm where she lives in an apartment. She cares for her childhood home at the ancestral home at Restenäs and enjoys working in the large garden or clearing brushwood in the forest. The farm is close to the sea and she enjoys continuous changes in colour, structure and movement of the water. There is the chance for a lot of swimming in the sea but also a lot of bicycle trips and walking in the vicinity of Ljungskile. "I don't have a driving licence so I bicycle around the lanes around here. I make a packed lunch and take trips to Bredfjället or Vargfjället where there are farms with interesting history. I recommend the lanes to Ivarsbosjön and the road to Grinneröd church is beautiful."
"If one prefers to walk there are lots great stretches on the Bohusleden (Bohus trail). I seldom meet anyone in the forest, which is sad because it is so relaxing and beautiful here." NOT SUMMER WITHOUT LJUNGSKILE Birgitta's knowledge of, and interest in, food is as extensive as that for baking. She speaks warmly of the Villa Sjötorp restaurant where she hosts a birthday party for her relatives in late summer every year. "It really is one of Ljungskile's gems. They invested in organic food early and shopped for local ingredients, which makes eating a meal in the beautiful building a wonderful experience." "There is lots to do here beside the sea. Of course, a lot has changed since I grew up here. But the summers were fantastic then as well. For us children who lived here all year round it was a lot of fun when the summer visitors arrived. We got summer friends who we swam and danced with on Ulvön. I still meet some of them here in the summertime, not infrequently over a classic coffee morning at my place." "The fact is that I have spent every summer in Ljungskile – except when I studied in a town without water.
Birgitta's summer favourite
Bertakakor (approx. 30) Tips for outings in Ljungskile LYCKORNA BRYGGA KÖK OCH BAR offers food and wellknown Swedish artists. Is situated on distinguished Lyckorna. Harvest fresh blue mussels on the MUSSELEXPEDITION on the Märta boat, and enjoy mussels and other delicacies at i Musselbaren on Lyckorna. Here you will also find the Friluftsfrämjandet kayak section, which organises kayak trips etc. Take a SKÄRGÅRDSBÅTARNA'S LJUNGSKILE TOUR, which goes to the quays at Stillingsön, Ulvön, Slussen. Have coffee at CAFÉ FLORA and check out the interior design and clothing shop SPRUDLA. Both can be found in Magasinet in the town centre.
For Birgitta, this small cake is a genuine Ljungskile cake. She found the recipe in her mother's notebook, but as far as she knows, it has never been published anywhere else.
100 G BUTTER 1 TEA SP BICARBONATE OF SODA 1 DL SUGAR 3 DL FLOUR ½ TABLESPOON CINNAMON 1 TABLESPOON SYRUP 1 EGG YOLK Mix all the ingredients to a smooth dough. Roll out the dough to finger-thickness lengths on a baking tray or floured work surface. Cut the lengths to 2 cm long pieces and roll into balls. Flatten them with a fork. Place the cakes on a baking tray covered with parchment paper. Bake in the middle of the oven at 200oC for about 10 minutes. Let the cakes cool before lifting them from the baking tray.
Birgitta bicycles to Ulvesund's Växthus (garden centre) where she buys plants or has a cup of coffee.
Take the opportunity to see Superettan football team LJUNGSKILE SK play at Uddevalla Arena. Play a round at LYCKORNA GOLF COURSE. There is also a restaurant there. Relax with a salmon dish with views over Ljungskileviken at LAXBUTIKEN.

BOKENÄS PROFILE INGELA GRYTFORS
Ingela recommends TVÅ FRÖKNAR is a cosy shop with both interior design goods and clothing. Beside it sits the Stallgården restaurant, which also sells organic ingredients from its own shop, Stallgårdens skafferi.
MARSIPANLADAN sells handmade marzipan confectionery and other sweet things. It lies 900 metres before Skaftöbron on the road to Fiskebäckskil/Grundsund. HANTVERKSGLÄDJE AT BOKENÄSET – a summer craft market in Bokenäs community centre, which is open between the 8th July – 6th August.
BOKENÄS kyrka is great and really worth a visit.
HÖGÅS GÅRD OCH CAFÉ – café, bistro and cosy country hotel with a view over the fjord.
”I grew up on Hafsten's campsite and stayed here” When Ingela Grytfors was born her parents had just opened the campsite on Hafsten and she learnt the job from childhood. Many summer seasons later she took over the family business and now she and the family have developed the place into a five star resort. The excavators and construction workers outside the reception are working flat out to get the new pool area ready for the summer season. This is just one of the many ongoing investments being made to extend and develop the Hafsten Resort. "Yes, there will be pools with water slides and an adjacent restaurant that will serve healthy food. An exciting concept, I won't say more than that. I just see opportunities for our facilities. Executing ideas that I had in my head for a long time is a wonderful feeling," says Ingela. With the help of her family and the employees she has completed a lot of ideas in recent years. The campsite has developed into a year round resort with several restaurants, spa, gym, conference rooms, 60 cottages and 350 camping pitches. In addition, over 50 activities are available to guests and visitors. Everything from adventure golf, boules and kayak rental, to riding tours, clay pigeon shooting and quad bike treks. AS MANY GUESTS IN SUMMER AS IN WINTER "We see a clear trend of people wanting to be active outdoors on their holiday. Our aim is 16 Uddevalla&DU
to provide for all tastes. Another big difference to before is that we have as many guests in the winter as in the summer. Booking a weekend package in the winter is more and more common. Many people want to stay, eat and do things all in the same place. The food is an important part of the experience and the Hafsten Resort focuses on locally produced and organic ingredients. The coffee and wines are also organic." "We have an extensive menu with clearly marked lactose and gluten free dishes. The guests appreciate it." SKÄRGÅRDSBÅTARNA RUN THE HAFSTEN TOUR In this nature rich area there is a sandy beach with its own quay. The Skärgårdsbåtarna run Sunday tours here from Uddevalla during the summer. Families with children and others can spend a few pleasant hours here before the boat returns. Some people bring fishing gear because there are plenty of fish. "Everyone is welcome to swim, barbecue and participate in activities. You don't need to book a cottage or a camping pitch. We work
with the other restaurants, hotels, shops etc. on Bokenäs. If we are fully booked we try to help with alternative accommodation."
Bokenäs' best fishing spots Fish are plentiful in most of the water around Bokenäs and Uddevalla, but at SKÅR and HÄLLEBÄCK they seem to bite particularly often. Rent a boat at HAFSTEN RESORT and try your fishing luck. Why not try to reel in a TURBOT. Look for ”leopard bottom” shallows where the sand and gravel bottom is mixed with tufts of seaweed.
FISHING FOR SEA TROUT is popular in Bohuslän, particularly in the shallow waters of the inner archipelago. The sea trout can be caught on both spinner and fly. Fly fishing is best because the trout become cautious during the light periods of the year. When the water gets a little warmer the trout can be usually found where there is some current to the water, at this point fishing is best at headlands and straits. A good fishing spot for TROUT is a shallow inlet or beach where the bottom slopes gently for a couple of dozen metres and then slopes steeply to deeper water. Trout like to stay just on this "edge". The trout fishing season starts on the 1st April and runs to the last day of September. At all other times sea trout is protected.
NATURE Bokenäs has a lot to offer for those who want to look around. There are plenty of nature rich walking trails, cycle paths and kayak trips. The Havstensfjorden nature reserve is right beside the Hafsten Resort and there are lots of protected nature areas nearby. "I enjoy cycling on the beautiful roads to Orrevik and Eriksberg even if the terrain is a bit hilly. Walking up Havstensklippan is worth the effort as well. The view is impressive." "Those who like a little more adventure can try ”flying” over the treetops on our zipline, which runs 100 metres above the ground and is 900 metres long. It is Europe's longest zipline and an intense experience is guaranteed."

summer jazz week in Ljungskile L’Jazz in Ljungskile celebrate their 30th Summer jazz week between 25th - 30th July. To celebrate the jubilee, some of Scandinavia's best jazz musicians are appearing on stage. Änglaspel consists of seven Gothenburgers, who, as always, are very amusing. The audience has a lot of fun at their concerts, which are often peppered with amazing songs. The Dane Lisbeth Diers is also prone to breaking into song. She is one of the best drummers in Europe and the hub of a swinging quintet, sometimes frenetic among an arsenal of instruments, brushes, hands, mallets and drumsticks.
When the old blues fox Claes Jansson turns up with young Isabella Lundgren we can expect a lively mix of Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Bob Dylan and Billie Holiday. Classic jazz is brought to us by two superb tenors with their accompanists: Scott Hamilton and Jesper Thilo. Scott amazed the USA when, as a teenager, he sounded better than Ben Webster and Coleman Hawkins, which led to Benny Goodman, the world's most famous clarinettist, booking him.. Jesper, from Denmark, has been one of Europe's leading jazz musicians for many years and among others things played on
Miles Davis' classic Aura. Iris Bergcrantz has emerged as a big jazz songstress. She mixes her jazz with folk music and 60s rock. She has brought her father Anders with her, he is a fantastic trumpeter who has not played in Ljungskile for a long time. The Jubilee finale is delivered by pianist Lars Jansson who started L’Jazz 30 years ago with his trio. He now appears with trumpeter Peter Asplund's trio and the evening continues into the night with a band made up of L’Jazz stipendiaries.
barn dance festival at Lane Loge Between the 12th -16th July, Lane Loge will be holding the West coast barn dance festival for the 20th year in a row. Each evening the barn will be packed with barn dancers and party goers of all ages, from across the Nordic region. A different band will be on stage every night and each of them has their own audience. The cottages and campsite will be filled with people meeting new and old friends of all ages. Donnez are a traditional band who kick off the festival on the Tuesday night. The 24 Uddevalla&DU
boys in the band are young and enthusiastic. They have a lively stage show and play more instruments than most dance bands. Wednesday is the party night of the week when barn dance giants Lasse Stefanz play. The audience come in cowboy hats and boots and make a proper night of it. Thursday's evening has a modern twist with non-stop dancing to the immensely popular Sannex andBlender. The barn fills with guests who like to stay on the dance floor all night long. There will be jitterbug, swing and jiving at
breakneck speeds. On Friday it is the turn of the kings of barn dance bands, Streaplers. After 55 successful years as a band they have a very loyal following. This evening is usually the busiest of the whole season. On Saturday, Kindbergs take the stage. They mix modern and traditional barn dance music and have several country-influenced tunes in their repertoire. The Lönnkrogen restaurant will be open every evening of the week. A superb barn dance buffet is served with DJ music and karaoke.
international street market food from all over the world Bon appétit, Buen provecho, Smaklig måltid – yes, this is exactly what you are going to hear for four days at Kungstorget when the International Street Market pays a visit to Uddevalla. This fantastic street market draws street vendors from all over the world. The market is an absolute triumph with its tempting food samples.
Drop in at Kungstorget between 3 and 6 August to sample the delicious specialities of international cuisine such as Spanish paella, German wurst, Italian delicacies, pasta dishes, olives, French cheeses, English fudge and a lot of other appetising spicy fare. In addition to food, the market also offers a number of other exciting products for sale. Visitors are
welcome to take a stroll among the vendors, soak in the atmosphere and sniff the heady aroma of the various meals on offer. A doughnut for breakfast, a barbecue for lunch or a plate of delicacies for dinner – here you can eat anything you fancy or get a take-away and enjoy the food back at home!
uddevallakalaset fun for the whole family Uddevallakalaset is a major family holiday and a much-cherished tradition that attracts many of Uddevalla’s citizens to the city centre for three full days coloured by a fabulous atmosphere from the Guest Harbor right the way along Kungsgatan and Kungstorget. The open-air cafés are teeming with jolly,
tanned holidaymakers, while children play happily, watch circus shows or have fun at the large amusement park nearby. When the evening draws in, the whole of Kungsgatan is transformed into an enormous open-air restaurant, with delicious food and beverages that await guests at every corner. There is
music and entertainment on several stages. Uddevallakalaset offers its 40,000 guests a fantastic atmosphere in the city centre from 28 to 30 July every year ensuring a magnificent festival for the whole family!

uddevalla solid sound celebrates five years by offering free admission This year Uddevalla Solid Sound celebrates its fifth year and is offering free admission and an extra festival day. The music festival is perhaps the largest in Bohuslän and attracts large audiences of different ages. Save the dates of 16th-18th June! You do not want to miss this festival with lots of awesome live music.
” It will be a festival and the world's best party over three days”
For three days, the stages will be filled with live music from some of Sweden's best artists and bands. Artists include the duo Norlie & KKV, who are behind Spotify's most played Swedish song in 2015, and Miriam Bryant who has gained a large audience through her participation in the television hit ”Så mycket bättre” (So much better). The line-up also includes Joel Alme, known for involvement in "Jill's veranda", rising star Ida Redig, the band Bob Hund, electronic duo Tungevaag & Raaban and the ever popular Thomas Stenström, Movits and many more. AIMING FOR A RECORD CROWD Solid Sound is an independent music festival founded in 2012 by Simon Tehyrell and Pontus Blom, who both have a deep interest in music. The festival has attracted attention across the country as one of the fastest growing independent festivals in Sweden. "We have gone from 300 to 4000 visitors, and this year we are expecting up to 20,000 people, because we decided to have free admission", says Simon Tehyrell. "Free entry means that we can create the conditions for a party where as many as possible can meet and have fun together. Spreading
26 Uddevalla&DU
love and joy and bringing people together through music has been our goal from the beginning, and now it is more important than ever", says Simon. MORE THAN A MUSIC FESTIVAL With Solid Sound the organizers also want to highlight issues such as integration, equality and community. During the festival there will be lectures and workshops on equality, diversity, LGBT, integration, creativity and cultural issues. "We truly believe that meetings between different cultures and generations increases understanding between people. A music festival is a natural meeting place where people meet in a positive context", says Simon. The music festival is, as usual, held on the Riverside meadow in central Uddevalla, where several stages will be erected. Food and drink will be sold around the festival. "This year, we are making an additional investment in food. We will have the country's best food trucks on site. I think we have a legendary music festival in front of us. In addition to a festival and the world's best party over three days, we have an amazing line-up of artists and bands on our stages", says Pontus Blom. Organisers: Simon Tehyrell and Pontus Blom. Simon has worked as a LGBT's club organizer and DJ. He ran the successful club concept, Club Sockerbeat. Pontus is a musician and plays in several bands who release records and tour nationally and internationally. More info: uddevallasolidsound.se

Members of the public can go aboard an old tugboat or one of the other ships that are open to the public. One can also try sailing, learn to make ropes in the old fashioned way or enjoy the sound of a genuine hot bulb engine. "This year we have a lot more activities on the program than last year. Admission is free and everyone is welcome to try something new. The clubs offer the activities and their expertise", explains Göran Bäckström from Viken Ägir Sailing club. "The aim is create interest in Uddevalla's maritime activities. We want everyone to be able to try sailing without having to buy a boat or equipment themselves." REGATTA AND NATTSUD EVENING EVENTS IN THE TOWN CENTRE The event starts on the Thursday evening as the harbour fills with sailing boats that will be competing in the Pantaenius Bohus race. In 2015, 200 boats took part and it looks like there will be at least as many this year. The same evening Nattsudd starts with Uddevalla town centre shops staying open until 22.00. "The Pantaenius Bohus race starts on Friday
morning and when the boats have left the harbour, the water activities in Bäveån take over. That is when the public get involved. There will also be bouncy castles for the children in Badhusparken." "This year we have also decided to lift the water activities onto dry land, in project Vänligt Vatten (Friendly water). The project will give visitors the chance to discover water through all their senses in a calm and safe environment. One can taste the salt water, touch it with starfish and mussels, and smell the tang of the Bohuslän sea air. It will all be in large and small pools in Museiparken." MUSIC FESTIVAL IN MUSEIPARKEN On the Friday night there will be musical entertainment in Museiparken, everyone is invited to bring a picnic and enjoy a fantastic summer evening of music. The harbour party and activities continue on Saturday. Saturday sees the new recreational competition Uddevalla Swimrun, which starts in Södra Hamnen as part of the Uddevalla Water Weeks activities. "Saturday night is rounded off with wonderful musical entertainment in Museiparken and this will also be free admission and is open to everyone. Donations can be made to Uddevalla Water Week which will support the Sailing club's work with young people. It addition, 10 percent of the event's surplus will be donated to the Svenska Sjöräddningssällskapet (Swedish Sea Rescue Society) which is starting operations in Uddevalla this summer."

Uddevalla MTB
Uddevalla Swimrun
Premiere of new mountain bike event The 16th July sees the first Uddevalla MTB recreational event for everyone who enjoys mountain biking. The 68 km long route goes through forests and alongside the sea when Bohuslän is at its most beautiful. Uddevalla MTB is not a race but a recreational event for everyone. "The course is laid out to challenge both experienced MTB cyclists and beginners. The route offers fantastic views over the fjord and wonderful stretches in the forest." "We have put a lot into finding a route that shows off the best of the nature around us. There are several spectacular sections and we can promise something special at the check points. Our aim is that it should be one of Sweden's most beautiful long distance courses", says Mats Andersson, Uddevalla IS. "Cycling is growing fast. It is easy to do and healthy for the body. Young and old can bicycle. Cycling is an individual form of recreation which is more fun if it is done as a group", says Mats. The three clubs that are arranging Uddevalla MTB are using Cykelvasan as

a template. The course is very varied and hillier than the Cykelvasan, but has been planned to suit everyone. The initiators of the race are Pär and Martin Noord, brothers who started mountain biking a few years ago. PUTTING UDDEVALLA ON THE MAP "We want this event to put Uddevalla on the map. There is fantastic nature around us here with countryside, forests and sea. The event takes place at the height of summer when Bohuslän is at its most beautiful, with sea bathing and lots of interesting things to do", says Pär. For the brothers it is important that voluntary organisations are behind an event like Uddevalla MTB. They therefore initiated a partnership with three clubs; BMK Uddevalla, Uddevalla IS and Uddevalla CK. The working group behind the event includes Anders Selling, who was previously CEO of the Vasaloppet and helped to develop the Cykelvasan. "Our goal is to create a professional, annual event where all of Uddevalla can participate in some way. A festival for everyone", says Pär.
2nd July sees the first ever Uddevalla Swimrun. A new competition involving running and swimming along Uddevalla's beautiful coast. The distance is set at 12 km and runs from Badhusparken in the centre, via the Strandpromenaden and islands to Lindesnäs, and then back to Kungstorget.
ORGANISERS: Uddevalla CK, BMK
Uddevalla and Uddevalla IS.
Any surplus from the event will go towards supporting sports in Uddevalla.
ABOUT THE EVENT: The course is 68 km. Start and finish are at Glimminge motor circuit. The course runs via Vindsvalan recreation track, Ranneberg, Sundskogen, Gustafsberg, Strandpromenaden, Kungstorget and Ramseröd nature reserve. MORE INFO: uddevallamtb.se
"We believe that the competition will attract both participants and crowds from near and far. It will be a wonderful experience for both competitors and spectators", says Christoffer Nielsen, one of the organisers. The route runs along Uddevalla's beautiful fjord and Bäveån, and the swim takes place close to the coastline. The crowd will have a great view of both running and swimming from Uddevalla's beaches. Lots of volunteers will help to make sure that the competition runs smoothly. PARTY IN TOWN – Uddevalla Swimrun 2016 will offer a fantastic premiere. Because the start and the finish are both in the town centre we have planned
a public party in town. Alongside the prize giving there will be hotdogs, sponsor displays and more. In addition, it will be held during Uddevalla Water Week. So Uddevalla will be filled with people trying water sports, looking at boats, following the Pantaenius Bohus race and participating in other fun activities. You can safely say that there will be a lot going on around the water and the maritime world that weekend.
ORGANISERS: Christoffer Nielsen and Markus Kårebrand. Both are Uddevalla residents who are passionate about arranging events in Uddevalla. Christoffer runs several companies in the town and Markus has long experience of competing in swimrun. ABOUT THE EVENT: The route is 12 kilometres long, of which 2 kilometres is swimming. Participants compete in teams of two in Mens, Womens or mixed classes. MORE INFO: uddevallaswimrun.com

Kajakkalaset
Four day festival filled with kayaking events On the 22nd - 25th July, Gustafsberg will celebrate the Kajakkalaset kayak festival for the fifth year. The festival is for everyone – regardless of whether you can paddle a kayak or whether you want to learn. There are guided tours, courses, inspirational sessions and lots of other fun stuff on the program. This year the festival has been extended by two days. The first day is a warm-up day, the second and third days are filled with courses, and on the final day guided tours have been arranged. The key words for the festival are fellowship, knowledge and inspiration. "The kayak festival really is for everyone. We want everyone to enjoy themselves and learn new things, no matter what their previous
level of experience. We are organising courses and activities on three levels of ability. The aim is that you will be a better kayaker when you leave than you were when you arrived. And that you have enjoyed yourselves during that time", explains Joakim Hermanson of the Upplevelsebolaget. Kajakkalaset is organised by the Upplevelsebolaget based in Gustafsberg, a unique culturally historic waterside environment. All activities are based at the Upplevelse boatshed in the area. FANTASTIC ENVIRONMENTS FOR KAYAKING "For beginners, kayaking can become a lifelong love. It is an easy way to get out on the water and have fantastic experiences. And
there is always more to learn, knowledge that makes kayaking more fun and safer. Here in Bohuslän we have fantastic conditions for kayaking. Sea kayaking doesn't get any better." Joakim practices what he preaches. He kayaks a lot, summer and winter, in calm and in storms. "Naturally there have been a lot of kayak tours in Bohuslän but also in other parts of the world. There are few things better."

Bokenäs Triathlon & Swimrun The big sports event of the year in Bokenäs
Bokenäs Triathlon takes place on the 16th-17th July, which is one of Sweden's biggest triathlon competitions for junior athletes and children. Since it started in 2013 the event has grown very quickly. In 2015 over 100 children and junior athletes took part, and 200 adults. New for this year is that Bokenäs IF have also organised a Swimrun. Triathlon is one of the fastest growing recreational sports in the country. Participants swim, cycle and run different distances depending on what class they are competing in. "Swimming, cycling and running are things that we can all do. The participants have a discipline that they prefer, but few are really good at all three", explains Fredrik Olsson, competitions manager at Bokenäs IF. – This is a really fun recreational event in a fantastic environment. Bokenäs has the best tracks one could imagine. The swim in Gullmarsfjord is challenging and enjoyable. The cycle route has fantastic views across the fjord. And then the race is completed with a run through varied and attractive terrain. Bokenäs Triathlon is a good opportunity for
32 Uddevalla&DU
junior athletes, children and adults to try a triathlon. – New for this year is that we have more junior classes and can offer 14-15 year olds slightly longer distances. They swim 200 metres, cycle 5 kilometres and run 2 kilometres. And adults can compete at a longer Olympic distance of 1500 metres swimming, 40 kilometres cycling and 10 kilometres running. The same routes are used as for the shorter recreational distances: 400 metres swimming, 20 kilometres cycling and 5 kilometres running. – The event is now quite large and is appreciated by the participants, public and residents of Bokenäs. We also have a lot of sponsors.
PREMIERE FOR BOKENÄS SWIMRUN The day after the triathlon competition is the premiere of the Bokenäs Swimrun, also under the auspices of Bokenäs IF. It is a recreational race of around 10 kilometres, of which approximately 2 kilometres is swimming and 8 kilometres is running. The competition is divided into 11 stages. "We hope that a lot of people will want to take part in the first event. It is a recreational event that most people should be able to do. It might be the first Swimrun competition for some, others might use it as a warm up for a longer race. Or why not try it just to a get a fantastic nature and sports experience?"
ORGANISERS: Bokenäs IF – an association covering many different sports - athletics, football, table tennis, triathlon etc. The aim of the Bokenäs Triathlon is to offer children and junior athletes the opportunity to try a triathlon. COMPETITION MANAGEMENT: Fredrik Olsson and his colleagues at Bokenäs IF. Fredrik is a youth leader in athletics and wants children and juniors to enjoy training and competing. Fredrik will be competing in both the recreational triathlon and swimrun. MORE INFO: www2.idrottonline.se/BokenasIF Don't miss Uddevalla X-trail at Herrestadsfjället on 5th November. Uddevalla&DU 33
