Tucked away amidst the hustle and bustle of Indonesia’s modern capital is Kota Tua Jakarta, the Old Town area of the city. Covering about 320 acres (1.3km2), this quaint part of Jakarta has an old world charm about it and gives you a chance to learn more about the history of the city. Kota Tua Jakarta was initially known as Batavia by the Dutch who occupied the area and made it the administrative headquarters of the Dutch East India Company. Used as a trading port to trade such items as tobacco and spices, this small city flourished under the Dutch and their influence can be seen not only in the presence of a canal system, but also in the old buildings which showcase the European architecture of the time.

PHILOSOPHY As the former Dutch’s administrative hearquarter, Kota tua has a rather dark and traumatizing past. It was where people get arrested, jailed, and even killed. As the new approach plan for re-branding Kota tua, we want to avoid being too direct about the past or being too western in terms of style since it may cause unwanted impression from people who view the logos. The logo’s concept is pictorial art with the style of stained glass. For a long period of time, stained glass is commonly use as a visual element to re-tell an event or story, by adding the stained glass style with an organic line to potrayed the image of the buildings in Kota tua the result will be sufficient to create an impression of fairytale-ish that is acceptable to the people in general.

5 Graphic Standard Manual Kota Tua
Kota tua is an area that contains several Dutch architectural building that were used as supporting pillars during the collonialism. Kota tua doesn’t have a clear image of what represent itself to the public. The idea of the logo is to visualize a city as a whole. It also represent the power that they have over the sea and land for trading/ trafficking purpose.
Variations The following designs are the different varieties of logo that can be applied in different or certain condition. The first one is the actual logo that can be use with its true color on a white or light color surface. The second one is the reverse logo that has to be used when the logo is applied to a dark colored background. The third one is use for marketing tools, flyers, poster or anything that printed or set in a monochromatic format.

When people heard the term wayang, the first thing that appears on their mind is the shadow puppet or well known as wayang kulit, but not many people are aware of the fact that wayang comes in different form; one of them is wayang topeng, where the players wear a mask to potrayed the character that they are playing. Unfortunately the face of the mask looks rather intimidating, so to make sure it doesn’t scare people who wants to enter, the expression is changed to appear more harmless.

Cafe Batavia has varieties of history since the building itself was used for several purposes. It used to be an administrative building at some point and it turned into an art gallery during 1991, until finally established as a cafe/ restaurant in 1993. The idea for this logo is creating something like a tea party essence with a fine flow to create a comforting atmosphere in a cafe.

This is the building that represent Kota tua in public’s eyes. This building undoubtly was very important during the collonialism era. It was a city hall and an administration building where they collected all the important archives and documents. The idea is to simplify the building while maintaining the essence of it. The idea was developed because Fatahillah building is very dominant among all buildings in Kota tua, and it is the most memoriable in public’s eyes.

In this museum they also have copies of Basuki Abdullah and Raden Saleh’s paintings. The idea of this logo is to potrayed ‘finearts’ by creating organic lines around the ceramic as it represent the stroke of a brush. On the first glance the lines create a shape that resemble to tulip flower and leaves.

Pigeon post is the use of homing pigeons to carry messages. Pigeons were effective as messengers due to their natural homing abilities. The pigeons were transported to a destination in cages, where they would be attached with messages, then naturally the pigeon would fly back to its home where the owner could read his mail. The original logo for the post office is a pigeon with swift like lines and a globe, indicating how fast the airmail system is. The idea of the new logo is to maintain the image of the pigeon but in a stained glass style. The organic lines and the blue-ish background indicating a sea (oversea) the message is that the airmail system is fast even if the mail is sent to other country.

The Maritime Museum was installed in a former Dutch East India Company warehouses. The west warehouse consists of four building units, three of them are now used for the museum. These were formerly used to store spices e.g. nutmeg and pepper. Also coffee, tea and cloths were stored here before being shipped to various ports of Asia and Europe. Across the museum there is a tall tower that acted as the watch tower and control tower for the ships that brought goods for trade. The idea of the logo is to capture the Syahbandar tower’s visual since the building is very unique compared to its surrounding.

From the 13th to 16th century Sunda Kelapa was the main port of Sunda Kingdom. The port served the capital, Pakuan Pajajaran, located about 60 km inland south, along the Ciliwung river hinterland, now the site of modern Bogor. The port thrived on international spice trade especially pepper, the main spice produce of the Sunda kingdom. Sunda Kelapa, together with Aceh and Makassar, were one of the few Indonesian ports that maintained ties with Europe. The logo visualize the wooden boat that sail through the ocean as it carried lots of spices and merchant’s goods inside it.

The church was formerly known as De Nieuwe Portugeesche Buitenkerk (“The New Portuguese Outer Church”), referring to its position on the outside of the city wall, as opposed to Portugeesche Binnenkerk, “the Portuguese Inner Church”). The church was also known as Belkita during the period. The idea of the logo came from the church’s interior. Inside the church there is a unique roof like altar that really stood up aside from the pipe organ in the church. We then simplify the shape and adding cross to make sure that people are aware that it is a church.
