Nature’s ‘Confetti’

f you ask Colin Rhein, 3, why people should go outside in the fall, he’ll tell you it’s because they want to “crumble” all the leaves. He and his brother, Owen, 5, love “fall confetti,” which is what they call throwing leaves in the air. It’s a popular pastime as the leaves turn from green to yellow and red and make heaps as they drift off the tree branches. What’s most exciting? When the big magnolia tree outside their house loses its leaves. The boys go with their parents, Jenn and Jimmy of Huntington Woods, to Carpenter Lake Nature Preserve (Southfield), and check out Owen and Colin Rhein nature trails in Tenhave Woods (Royal Oak) and Maybury State Park (Northville) to see what the leaves look like in different places. “That’s a thing we like to do as a family,” Jenn Rhein says. They like to be outside enjoying nature, she says, adding that she’s glad they live somewhere they can really experience the seasons. Another family favorite fall spot: Franklin Cider Mill, where Jenn went as she grew up and says she is excited to take her kids. Owen and Colin like climbing trees and playing in the piles of leaves that fall this time of year. Trees that lose their leaves are called deciduous trees. There are probably some in your yard or on the street where you live. There might be some trees that don’t lose their leaves. Those are called evergreen trees.

Fantastic Fall Nature’s own recycling plans

n nature, trees naturally recycle their leaves — the leaves that fall become nutrients for the Earth, and then trees grow new leaves in the spring. The fallen leaves become great hiding spots for animals, too.

Take a look! F

ind a spot in your backyard and look closely at the trees. Go out every day to that spot for a few minutes, sit and write a couple words or draw a picture about what you see. The trees are changing so much. “Sit and capture it somehow,” says Bonnie Hollander, nature education coordinator for the Farmington Hills Nature Center. “You’ll be able to really appreciate the magic and beauty of the change, to notice it more.” Use your eyes to see how different each leaf is — each one is a work of art, she explains. “Notice the leaves as they’re falling,” Hollander says, “and how every leaf has one dance when it falls off its limb and flutters and spins to the ground — unless you pick it up and make it dance again.”

One quick joke:

Q: What happens when winter arrives? A: Autumn leaves!

n

Stay in the know with all things Jewish...

Did you know?

The organization The Greening of Detroit has planted more than 130,000 trees in Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park since 1989. Want to plant a tree this season? According to The Greening of Detroit, the best times of year to plant trees are early spring or fall. Another fun fact: The organization says newly planted trees need 15-20 gallons of water a week to get settled. Trees are great for sitting in the shade. But they also help clean our air, give us food and help reduce erosion (thanks to their roots absorbing water, less soil gets washed into streams and lakes).

Surprise! There’s even a blessing for seeing beautiful things, such as a beautiful tree! Baruch ata [HaShem, Elokeinu] melech ha-olam, she kacha loh b’olamoh. It translates to: Blessed are You, Lord Our God, King of the Universe, who has such things in his world.

Learn Some Hebrew Want to try a little (tree) Hebrew? PJ Library says learning some Hebrew words while walking in the woods could be fun — and also might help you think about your Hebrew name, too!

Try this at home! Make your own nature art. IDEA: Bonnie Hollander of the Farmington Hills Nature Center

Find sticks, rocks and leaves in your yard, whatever you see that you want to add to your artwork. Try using sticks to make a frame and other fallen items to decorate. Here’s the thing — it’s temporary. You won’t use glue or anything to hold it together. Instead, leave the items loose and see where the art takes you. SEPTEMBER 30 • 2021
