INNOCENT TILL DARK/COVERBAND KILLERS/HIGHWATER/THEPILZ/UNDERLAND/RAY STREET PARK. On Oct 2nd 2010 Detroit Live celebrated its 2 year anniversary at the Rack and Roll Nightclub in Riverview. Reminiscent of the original “2008 Kickoff”, tonight’s show would be before a full packed house. It was 8:45 in the evening when I noticed that the Rack and Roll was at 75% capacity. The first two bands had done an incredible job of promoting, ensuring large, excited audiences to entertain.

the bar high for not only her band mates but any band that has to follow them on stage. Her passion for performing combined with the skill and dedication of bandmates Venom and Pagan combine to make The Pilz a band that is quickly rising to the top of the Detroit rock and roll dog pile. (Huge props to Brad Napora from Avarice for filling in on the drums) http://www.myspace.com/thepilz Storming the stage next, Underland. Chris Lucas, Jimmy Deceaser and Lou Abraham have for years been a dominant force on the Detroit music scene and show no signs of letting up. This 3 piece’s huge sound is rivaled only by its incredible fan base. Underland fans sporting their swag overtook the Rack and Roll and stormed the stage. The rowdy Underland fans seemed to throw gasoline on the raging rock and roll inferno that was already devouring the stage, elevating the room’s energy level to an almost incomprehensible level. As the crowd incited and inspired the band, the band did the same to the crowd until what was left was self sustaining tidal wave of underlandian proportions. Whether it’s tracks from their Black, White and Grey CD or covers of Sir Mix-A-Lot’s “Baby Got Back”, Underland brings to the table an intensity and talent level that any live music fan can not only appreciate but inevitably come to crave. www.myspace.com/underland1 Headlining the Detroit Live 2 year anniversary was the almighty Ray Street Park. Anyone who has not been living under a rock for the last decade or so has heard of RSP. Lead vocalist Rick Stafford is a frontman’s frontman. With full control of the crowd and years of experience, Rick leads the RSP boys to the musical Promised Land every show. Years of performing live and an intimate familiarity with bass guitar has turned Terry Martin into a monster on bass. His style is flamboyant and precise. His skill and confidence emanates from the stage with every riff and pluck of his bass. Guitarist Jeff Howey achieves the perfect tone and seems to have written the book on rock and roll guitar. His Les Paul/Marshall half stack emanates tones that command respect. Lastly, but nowhere near least, is drummer Darrel Robertson. His aggressive style and bombastic fearlessness propels RSP and gives the band no option but to rock. Darrell sets a pace that is absorbed and amplified by the rest of the band making RSP one of Detroit’s most coveted local acts. www.raystreetpark.com Cont. on page 28

DL MAG 2010 GIFT GUIDE

Winter is coming and that means two things, holidays and cold weather. I had the opportunity to try out some great gifts and I want to let our readers know what I thought of them. All video games were tested on the PS3 system and I haven’t played online (yet). Red Dead Redemption- 1st game I’ve ever gotten 100% completion in. This game will immerse you til you think YOUR name is John Masterson. Lots of side missions and it’s worth the $ just to experience the horse riding (your transportation) and the wild animal interaction. Kids will like it, and there’s also a new expansion game just released called “Undead Nightmare.” (This is a zombie game!) www.rockstargames. com/reddeadredemption Mafia II- Great graphics and intriguing storyline. Cinematic and it takes place in the 1940’s and 1950’s, which means all the cars, clothes and even radio stations are era related. Very straightforward with limited side missions. Fairly simple and won’t take long to finish, but the gun battles that end every mission will take a few tries. www. mafia2game.com

Tires Starting at $30.00 and up Monday-Saturday 9-6

NCAA Football 2011- Best football game as usual. ESPN commentary has improved, as well as the running game and the offensive options. Has adapted to the changing face of college football. Michigan still isn’t that good though. www.ncaafootball.easports. com Tiger Woods 2011- I’m just surprised they kept him after last year’s mess! Still a great game for any golfer, and may even teach you a little about the real game. This game has some of the best courses in golf, with more enhanced graphics than before. This year you can also lead your team to the Ryder Cup, which is always competitive, even against the computer. www. tigerwoodspgatour.easports.com Spiderman-Web of Shadows- Very cartoonish and the kids will love it. You’ll get to play as 4 different versions of Spidey, each with his own special powers and techniques. Features many of the villains of old, and even a few new ones created just for the game, and you have to defeat each one multiple times during the level. Shouldn’t take too long to complete. www. herohq.com

24599 Gibraltar Rd, Flat Rock, MI 48134 cont on pg. 11

Castlevania-Lords of Shadow- 1st next-gen Castlevania game is an ode to the great games of the past. Very difficult and long game, reminds me a lot of God of War, so be ready to do some button mashing. The bosses and monsters are well designed that take some strategy to beat, and the various puzzles will confuse many. Some of the most detailed graphics I’ve seen in a game. http://www.konami.jp/castlevania

By Ryan Lapointe

Def Jam Rapstar- A karaoke rap game, has a great soundtrack featuring a good mix from old and new. Different than other “music” games because you actually have to get the lyrics correct and not just the tone. Has “battle” and “co-op” multiplayer modes, and also a freestyle mode where you can record your own lyrics and I’ve heard of some contests online as well too. Great party game! www.defjamrapstar.com/ Rockband 3- Much harder than earlier games. Career mode is extensive and will take a while to beat. New instruments include a 6-string guitar and a keyboard. Good mixture of music from the 70’s too current. Of course a great game for parties. www.rockband.com I also had the chance to check out a few DVD’s Breaking The Code: Behind The Walls of Chris Jericho- This is a great story of the best sports entertainer ever. From his time in Canada to Germany to Mexico and to the U.S., you also get 19 career-spanning matches including some unforgettable promos with The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin amongst many others. The DVD even has a feature about Chris’ band Fozzy which has started making a name for themselves since their evolution from an 80’s cover band. www.wweshop.com A Nightmare on Elm Street- I’ve been a fan of the “Elm Street” series since childhood so I took this remake to heart. Jackie Earle Haley plays a much more evil and sinister Freddy. He’s a little less about the one-liners and more about the killing. Tells the back-story, which seems like a trend with horror remakes. BluRay has some cool features and tells a lot of details about the re-imaging and creation of the new character. TRUE Elm Street fans will love it! www.nightmareonelmstreet.com Big Four DVD- A must have for thrash metal fans. Live concert performance from the Sonisphere Festival in Sofia, Bulgaria featuring Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer, and Metallica recorded this past June. There’s even a song featuring all of Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, and Dave Lombardo from Slayer. (Why not the rest of Slayer? I don’t know, because the review copy didn’t include any interviews or backstage footage.) Sounds great in high-def! www.metallica.com or www.slayer.net John Cena Experience- Shows the travels and responsibilities John Cena has in the WWE. From the “Tribute to the Troops,” to TV & movies, the Fiesta Bowl, and to Wrestlemania weekend, it follows the charismatic Cena as you what it’s like to be a WWE superstar. Also features 15 matches from the last couple years. Kids will love it! (As they do Cena himself) www.wweshop.com

Bob Harris(Far right) with The Rolling Stones

This is a very exciting time of the year. Lots of LIVE music events. Maybe none bigger then my partner Bob Harris, author of the Motor City Rock and Roll book, who is promoting an ALL AGES show, 6 till 10 PM, on Saturday November 13th at the Gibraltar Trade Center in Taylor. This is going to be a legends of rock event, featuring Jose Riojas (Hall of Fame guitarist), the Contours (Motown Recording Artists, Dirty Dancing movie), Shades of Blue (60s HIT - Oh How Happy), Question Mark and the Mysterians (60s HIT - 96 TEARS, the song John Lennon proclaimed best 45 ever!) and the Benny and the Jets Band (the guy with the beard who helps Bob write this column). All these legendary bands will be performing LIVE, on two stages. At the same time the WORLD’S LARGEST (FREE) ROCK AND ROLL AUTOGRAPH SIGNING, will take place. Literally 100s of performers, writers, artists and entertainers will be present for meet and greet, photo and autograph opportunity. Some of the scheduled stars, members of Frigid Pink (House of the Rising Sun), The Rationals (Respect), Steve King and the Dittlies, Leni Sinclair, MC5, Looking Glass (Brandy), Mansfield Park, Mike Quatro, Carl Ludgren (artist), Chain Reaction, Derek St. Holmes (Ted Nugent), Gino Washington (60s HIT Gino is a Coward) Jeff and the Atlantics (WCM award), George Young (Swingin Time TV show), Jack Rainwater (Georgia on my Mind), Jack Scott (Sun Records), Spyder Turner (Under the Boardwalk), Darian Counts of Detroit Live Magazine, The Rockets and Salem Witchcraft. Speaking of The Rockets and Salem Witchcraft, there was a time (70s & 80s) when Salem Witchcraft was Detroit’s #1 band! They were one of the first concert club bands. One of the first bands to get $1000 a night, for a local band, at a local bar. Back in the 70s the drinking age was 18, HUGE concert clubs popped up, which kind of changed the Detroit rock and roll scene. Instead of Eastown Theaters and Grande Ballrooms with regional stars like Alice Cooper and Ted Nugent we became a concert club scene. Big clubs (400 maybe 500 seats) that had huge dance floors and sold beer! Salem would pack these clubs. Geez, my partner Bob might be the only one old enough to remember the West Side Six, Ritz, Studio, Bimbo’s, Funny Farm, Center Stage, Second Chance, Bahama Mama’s, Captain Ahab’s or the 24 Karat Club? I remember seeing The Rockets at the 24 Karat. A lean, mean rocking machine, two voice of the theater PA cabinets, two red lights, two Les Paul guitars plugged into two Marshall stacks up FULL

Bob & Benny By Benny Jet & Bob Harris

BLAST! Loud, proud and one of the best concerts (in a bar) ever. The Rockets were also from that 70s & 80s era, and were either ahead of their time or a little too late. They spent some time in the 60s with Mitch Ryder, in the 70s with Cactus, hanging out with Jimmy Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Ted Nugent and Bob Seger, but never quite got over the hump. Never got that huge hit record. So I kind of muddled through this huge paragraph to tell you about their upcoming reunion concert! The Rockets with Salem Witchcraft and Black Irish will be in concert Saturday November 27 at the famed Fillmore Theater. Tickets for the concert are via Live Nation. There are some Detroit rock fans that will not want to miss this show. Salem doesn’t perform that often (they opened for Cooper at Freedom Hill and Journey at the Riverfront concerts) and The Rockets are trying to find a way back to that national spot light they should have always had. Geez, we are running out of space here. I wanted to mention Bobbi Scheffer, she is the bass player from Eleventh Hour band. Bobbi works at the Guitar Center in Allen Park and was the girl in the photo on the Detroit Live Magazine calendar page in last months issue. And Bob, you should get her at the Gibraltar Trade Center show. Maybe invite Arthur Penhallow, our psychic friend Eddie Cooper, Iggy, Pistol Day Parade, Wendel the ICP fan, Screamin Scott, Mr. Positive, Ch 7 TV, and how about them girls from HOOTERS? It is right across the street. If you know a local celeb that Bob should invite to the show call him 313-399-8285. For more information on the Benny and the Jets Band call our hot line at 313-730-1627 or see the website www.myspace.com/bennyandthejets.

Detroit Live Magazine - Detroit Rock City!!! 11

By Eric Harabadian

Seasoned Detroit-area bassist Bob Conner is someone that has one foot in the present and one in the past. His vast live experience and his historical acumen for jazz, blues and early rock ‘n roll have both served him well. They have culminated into a gig with, arguably, one of the premier big bands in southeast Michigan, The Millionaires.

soloists that are appearing with increased frequency on many live dates. “Doug Deming was our main guitarist and when he left last fall to go to Miami it left a big gap in our sound,” says Conner. “We started using special guests like Rick Matle, Ron English, Brett Lucas and Evan Perri. The more we do it the more it seems like a really good idea. Every soloist plays a little different so the band plays a little different in their approach to the songs as well. It has a really great effect on the other guys in the band.”

The Millionaires actually began as a jam-only project in Conner’s basement for a couple years in the late ‘90s. They started with 12-14 players and whittled it down to ten when they took their act to the stage. In 2000, they recorded their one and only album Keep a Dollar in Your Pocket and have remained steadily active over the last “I’ve always had a love for the old R&B, jump decade, performing at a wide assortment of blues and swing stuff the bands were playing when World War II ended and the economy forced venues, community festivals, corporate gigs, private parties and weddings. Bar none, their bands to downsize,” explains bandleader Conner. “They were like little big bands—smaller versions favorite place to play has to be Callahan’s Music Hall in Auburn Hills, where they appear the last of big bands but the basic components were still Thursday of each month. there.” Conner is the animated and affable upright bassist for the ten-piece group that includes some of the leading lights on the regional music scene. The current line-up features Garfield Angove (lead vocals/harmonica), Mark LoDuca (piano), Dave Marcaccio (drums), John Slitti (percussion), Mark Berger (baritone sax), Davey “Bones” Lazar (trombone), Andy Wickstrom (trumpet) and Steve Wood (tenor sax). Granted, there are only nine musicians listed but that doesn’t include guest

The Motor Cities Contribution To

By Sarah Stonebraker Detroit is known as being one of the worlds most influential and innovative cities for music. Whether it’s early punk, Motown or even techno the city of Detroit always seems to leave its mark. ‘Detroit techno’ is a style of electronic music that started in the 1980’s. Detroit being cited as the “birthplace of techno music” has created a fertile breeding ground for electronic dance music. It was during techno’s second wave in 1988-89 that techno icons like Richie Hawtin with Ryan Laointe

energy at a low volume. And you better learn how to do that or you’ll be out of there really quick if you don’t. So, we learned how to play quieter, with more dynamics and how to get horn players off their microphones. It makes them play differently but still swing.” Just like the great big band leader Duke Ellington said, “it don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing!” The Millionaires are a band that takes that credo to heart. Their repertoire boasts early influences like Louis Jordan, Big Joe Turner, T-Bone Walker and, even Benny Goodman but they also add contemporary swing and rock influences like Brian Setzer (of Stray Cats fame). “We’re actually a jump blues band that uses boogie woogie piano, a three- or four -piece rhythm section and three or four horns,” explains the bassist/bandleader. “The tenor saxophone was the Tyrannosaurus Rex of the landscape at that time because the electric guitar hadn’t taken a foothold yet. We’re talking about the ‘40s through the early ‘50s. You wanted to have a really good tenor saxophonist in your band because he would be the guy to drive the crowd into a frenzy. The electric guitar came in and changed a lot of that.”

dance-if-you-want-to music.” Conner and The Millionaires are very happy with their aforementioned monthly musical home away from home at Callahan’s. The intimate music room mostly features local, regional and touring rock and blues bands and have gladly added the vintage yet fresh sound that The Millionaires offer. “Pete is the sound man at Callahan’s and he is so good,” says Conner. “They have a great sound system, great sight lines and the room is really set up for listening to music. They have a vested interest into making our gigs there a success as we do. We’re bringing in some people to their club that might not ordinarily go there… and some of the people that do ordinarily go there and see a ten-piece band usually think it’s pretty cool and think it sounds good!” The Millionaires are currently working on a new album at Magnetic Recording in Pontiac scheduled for a winter 2011 release. For more information on the band, go to www.millionairesplay.com. -

“We were playing a place in Sterling Heights “So we do a lot of swing and jump blues and called Tiramisu which was an Italian restaurant,” with the addition of John Slitti we’re doing says Conner. “In the past four years before we some more official Latin-type tunes,” Conner started at Callahan’s—which was April 2010— continues. “If we’re going to categorize our we played a lot of dining rooms and sports bars. band I would say we are a ten-piece dance This shouldn’t be overlooked. Playing in a dining band. Whether it’s Latin, swing, jump or early room with a ten-piece band when there’s a guy rock ‘n roll, it’s all dance music and it’s music six feet in front of you having a glass of wine and we all like. It’s not esoteric jazz stuff that Crystal Method a steak with his girl teaches you (if you’re paying everybody has to sit and analyze. It’s toeattention) how to swing and play with a lot of tapping, finger-snapping, get-up-and-

TECHNO Richie Hawtin and Carl Craig emerged. “One thing that separates our crowd from the rest of the world is simple” states DJ Paul Oakenfold, “When I come to Detroit a lot of people it seems live in the suburbs. It’s not like London, it’s completely different. But they’re really into the music; you can tell they enjoy themselves”. And that we do! Detroit has an industrial bleakness that not many people comprehend. It’s that bleakness that seems to serve as an artistic springboard for these DaVinci’s of electronica. It was 1994 when Richie Hawtin played Joe Louis Arena for the World Party. It was this event that established the idea of an annual celebration for electronic music in Detroit. But it wasn’t until 2000 that the Detroit Electronic Movement Festival was born. “I think Detroit has always had a huge heart about music, Detroit has went through some really shitty times in the 50’s and 60’s but the crowning of Detroit has just been so creative with Motown and Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Juan Atkins with Detroit Techno. When you come down people just get really emotional about their love with electronic music and that continues to go through Detroit no matter what happens with the city. I’ve always believed Detroit has the biggest heart of any city I have ever visited in my life”- Richie Hawtin. Every Memorial Day weekend

since 2000 this event emphasizes the progressive qualities of culture surrounding electronic music. Now every year people from all over the world come to Detroit to share their love of electronic music. Recently, while playing the Movement Festival in Detroit, the group Crystal Method they made a statement about “It’s incredible what’s happening in Detroit. THE MAGPODZ

Adventures of a Cover Band, Part VII Ch’ Ch’ Changes!

By Karin Elizabeth

If there’s one thing that I learned a long time ago, it’s that the only sure thing in life is that things are going to change. In my life it has especially been true. Part of it simply has to do with my personality, as I am constantly seeking new adventures, but another reason is that for one reason or another I have gone through some drastic changes. If you look at just one aspect of my life, my career, you will see that this is the case as I went from buttoned-up orchestra director to rock musician. If you saw me back then you would have never known it was me. And I myself would have never guessed in a million years that I would have ended up where I am today: living my wildest dream. However, had I been resistant to the crazy changes that lead up to this portion of my life, I never would have gotten there. I don’t know much, but I do know that change is a sometimes painful, but necessary part of life. If you want to come even close to having the things you want in life you have to get ready for some pretty uncomfortable moments. For most of us, that means going through some changes. As a child, most people adapt easily to change. It’s a fact of life. We change grades each year, and get a new teacher and new friends. As a teenager, (and well into your twenties really) the changes come so fast your head is spinning. You either learn to “roll with the punches” or get dragged down. Of course some reach an independent state sooner than others, but most of us know that hard-earned state required some blood, sweat and tears, and the ability to adapt to a rapidly changing environment. Adulthood, however, is a different story. As we grow, we learn what works and what doesn’t, and we learn to consistently do the thing that serves us well. This is how we develop our patterns and habits. Some of us become very comfortable after awhile and very much enjoy the relative stability that adult life has to offer. When people grow older they sometimes become “set in their ways.” However I am a firm believer that being inflexible isn’t always best. In my case it has always set me up for a rude awakening. As a result I try to stay open-minded and if I do end up making a mistake or believing in something that was incorrect, I try to learn from it.

By Karin Elizabeth

The famous philosopher Plato once said, “The only constant in life is change.” This concept is especially true in the music world. So if you want to be a musician, you’d better learn to adapt to change. Bands get together, and inevitably they break up. Some of the best bands in the world come to an end. In fact, everything does. People get older, and people change. With bands it is the same way. Some change more than others, but it really is unavoidable. Think of it like a relationship. It is the rare couple that is able to stay together from high school into old age. And if they do, you always hear them talking about the relationship “growing together.” A band is a type of relationship. It’s a professional relationship because you are making money together but it’s also a personal one because making music really is a personal thing. You are showcasing your talent, and thus yourself. A band becomes a vehicle for a group of people to showcase their talents together. You work together a lot, practice together, and build a project. As a result you get to know each-other and, in most cases become good friends. You also become friends with each-other’s family and friends and you end up developing a little network of support together. It is in this case that a band most resembles a relationship. It is also in this case that it makes it very painful if the relationship is counterproductive or if one or both parties are no longer happy. Very often one or more parties are dissatisfied in some way, yet financially dependent on the other. Again, in this sense it’s very much like a marriage. So when it ends, it is often very painful for all of the folks who are involved. Like any change, not all parties may be happy with the decisions that were made by the other party. This is where the change can be taken very personally, even though it shouldn’t be as it is a natural part of life. It’s no surprise that many musicians have come to dread the change that inevitably comes with the territory of working in groups of people on such an involved project as a band. In fact, a lot of musicians get out of the field because they “can’t find the right person” for this or that position, or they themselves are just not happy. It’s the seasoned musicians that I have talked to, who realize that change is an inevitable part of the game and if you want to play then you have to learn to adapt. I may not be the most experienced musician in the world, but I have defiantly been through some changes. Some have been initiated by me and others haven’t. Of course the ones that you’re not in control of are definitely the hardest. It’s that fear of the unknown that cont. on pg.15

The Macpodz—Jazz@Trinity Concert Series—10-17-10 Southgate’s Trinity Wesleyan Church has been one of the relatively new hot spots for all things jazzy in the metro Detroit area for well over a year now. At the helm is promoter Mark Clark, a member of the congregation and an inventive and tireless supporter of the arts. He consistently brings top shelf professional jazz talent to this acoustically perfect setting, typically, the last Sunday evening of every month. This particular night was no exception. The Macpodz are an Ann Arbor-based quintet that seems to find themselves quite often placed in the “jam band” category. While that distinction is somewhat accurate it doesn’t tell the whole story. These guys “jam” for sure, but they also swing, bump, swagger, sway and bop their way into an audience’s collective heart and soul as well. They began with a light and airy original piece entitled “Ascension” that seemed very apropos for the venue. With the church’s huge cross in the background, one was transported to some heavenly place via trumpet and flugelhorn player Ross Huff’s billowy melodic lines and electric bassist Brennan Andes’ flowing legato notes. That was followed by a tough and Latin-fueled take on classic jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard’s composition “Straight Life.” Huff again rose to the occasion unleashing robust and muscular leads as percussionist Nick Ayers and drummer Griffin Bastian broke things down to their groovy essence in the tune’s mid-section. The Grateful Dead’s “Love Light” got a gospel and bluesy-tinged

reading via outstanding organ solos and textures from keyboardist Jesse Clayton, with strong lead vocals by Andes. Clayton was spotlighted again with an original piece that really demonstrated the full range of his pianistic and organ-based abilities. His keyboard style unveiled a myriad of melodic peaks and valleys which provided a rollicking arc between himself and Huff on trumpet. At various points in the performance The Macpodz sprinkled in healthy bits of ‘70s-flavored funk and played a number of grooves where they would morph one tune into another creating a seamless medley of sound and unbridled expression. “Old Man,” a dreamy and odd-metered ambient piece, the free spirited “Spread Love” and a surprising cover of Jeff Beck’s “Led Boots,” with nice wah-wah trumpet and spot on Jan Hammer-like synthesizer soloing were show stoppers as well. The band got everyone on their feet for a concluding jam that featured strong solos all around and took on an almost revivalist feel. REVOLUTION

DISTURBED Cont from 7

By Tiny Tim Cook

Tiny Tim Cook I love being emotional. It drives some folks insane. Just ask poor Darian when it comes to my opinions. The poor guy has to deal with my bi-polar tendencies every month. Anyone that knows me or reads my column knows I am a big crybaby. I never hide what I feel and I am very proud of that. I also live for charity and I love that the Detroit music community is so giving. I recently had the honor of being a part of one of the most selfless acts I have ever seen. On Saturday, October 23rd a benefit for Kathleen Edward was taking place at Joe’s primetime in Gibraltar. An amazing night for this beautiful little girl and her family. Just down the road, on the same night at Rack ‘n’ Roll in Riverview the bands Silent Aggression, Sean Baker Orchestra, Dead House and Coverband Killers were playing when I was approached at the door by members of each of these bands. What followed next was one of those moments I will never forget. They told me they wanted me to take the door money down the road to the benefit and donate the entire door to that little girl. I broke down openly weeping. It’s moments like this that make me fight for the bands in this area as much as I do. I was so honored to be a part of that moment that those four bands will always have my respect and love. Next time you see anyone from Silent Aggression, SBO, Dead House or CBK, shake their hand and buy them a drink, they earned it. Detroit has heart baby!

Another passion is discovering new bands. Recently, several bands have gotten my attention. First, Both barrels at 11 are pure sludge in the vein of Clutch, Next was the band Wilson. Hardcore, straight-edge hard rock with some bad-ass pyrotechnics on guitar. Sounded like Bullet For My Valentine had a baby with All That Remains and that baby was converted to the church of John Patrician. Lastly, Weep The Beldam are a Toledo-based band that is trying to make a home in Detroit and some recent outings around D-town will definitely go a long way towards accomplishing that goal. Their impressive no-talk between songs style awe inspiring. If the Ramones decided to be a metal band, Weep The Beldam would’ve been it. That’s it for this month folks, drop me a line at Tinytimrocks@yahoo.com or look for me on face book at facebook.com/tinytimrocks. Remember as always earth, soul, rock ‘n’ roll and life Terry rules! from RSP and Tiny

sends some screaming back into the comfort of the way things were the way before. However, those changes are the ones I have learned the most from. I realize that change is inevitable, and as uncomfortable as I might be at the time, it is usually for the better for all involved. It is because of this positive notion that I now have of the word of “change” that I choose to move forward, not stay the same. Although it’s easier said than done, I accept the discomfort of change, and I embrace the new things that it brings to the table. Most of the time, I find myself pleasantly surprised.

Detroit’s Rock and Roll addiction

Gorillaz Show By Michael Comilla

I have been a huge fan of the Gorillaz ever since the first time I got the opportunity to hear them. I have even gone as far as tattooing a half sleeve on my arm of the fictional band created by Blur front man Damon Albran, and Tank Girl comic artist, Jamie Hewlitt. The performance at the Fox Theater was much, much more than just the two men and a cartoon band, as Albran was joined on stage by a full band, orchestra, and a plethora of guest stars that we have heard on the albums, plus a few we haven’t. With a sensational opening set by N.E.R.D. (New album Nov 2nd), led by legendary producer Pharell Williams, and a visual show that blew me out of the water, I must say that this was one of the most rewarding shows I have been to in years. The energy displayed both on stage, and in the crowd was something truly special. You could tell that every person there was not only in to the show, but a die hard fan as well. The set list was balanced with chart topping hits, hidden jems, and even instrumental breaks and commentary by the cartoon band themselves, whom were made

to look like they were trapped in the Fox dressing room, waiting for this “opening band” to get done. Even a full virtual tour of the “Plastic Beach Island” was given, showing us where residents 2D, Murdoch, Russel, and Noodle now reside and record music. The show concluded with an extra long version of the track “Demon Days” after a stellar encore performance of the bands most well known songs, accompanied by the bands whole entourage of guest stars. The Fox was a roar with applause and cheering, when the band took its final vow and walked off stage. I can honestly say that walking out I had a sense of accomplishment from just having the pleasure to attend this amazing show. I know that I, along with hundreds of other metro Detroiters that night felt like they had left with their own piece of sunshine, in a bag.

In the April 2009 edition of Detroit

Live Magazine we introduced you to Christina Chriss. At that time Christina had just joined forces with veteran rockers Bret Kropogg, Cody Morales and Desi to form the Christina Chriss band. Initially my 2009 write up of Christina was intended to be a small, one column, quick mention. But upon talking to Christina it became evident that she was a driven, focused and talented individual. When during that interview she mentioned that she had just joined forces with Bret, Desi and Cody I had no doubt that the Christina Chriss band was going places.

LL Cool J after-party at the Windsor Casino, they sat down to talk with me at the Detroit Live Magazine world headquarters in fabulous Brownstown, Michigan. DC: I know you guys have been working incredibly hard over the last year. What are some of the biggest changes that have occurred since the formation of CCB?

Christina: So much has happened. It’s hard to believe. In addition to writing a lot of new material we’ve really solidified as performers. Something that I feel has really contributed to the band you see today is the fact that we’ve worked so hard and spent so much time together that we’ve become very close friends.

Bret: It was unbelievable. As soon as the concert let out thousands of people rushed into the bar area of the casino, where the after-party was. At that point we just started throwing down. Shortly after that, LL came in and the party was on. In a matter of minutes it went from an empty room to a full-on blowout. Also, we got great feedback from the casino; as a matter of fact they asked us back to do a New Year’s Eve gig. DC: So what’s up next for CCB? Bret: Our main focus right now is getting signed to a label. DC: So how’s that going?

his experience get so excited about the new songs. We also met with High School Musical producer Andrew Lane who seemed very interested in working with us. Right now we are working with Mark Grilliot (producer of High School Musical). Mark has been doing the post production. We do all of the recording and pre-production at Cloud of Sound studios. One of the band’s greatest aces in the hole is that Cody is an incredible producer. He has the recordings all ready, then we send them to Mark Grilliot in L.A. and he mixes, masters and tweaks them and sends them back. As they come back we send them to Rodney at Darkchild Records.

Bret: It’s going better than we could have hoped for. One thing that has DC: What are some done wonders for us was acquiring things you guys are a manager. We are trying to be careful and very intentional with what we do and what we release. So far we’ve recorded about 8 songs but haven’t released any of them. DC: Has it been difficult to not release them? Christina: Yeh, We play them live though. A lot of people ask us to buy a CD but we are not putting them out until the time is right. That has caused a lot of people to come out mainly because they love our live show. In addition, it has helped us build up some hype around the release of our new CD. DC: Any label interests yet? Bret: As a matter of fact we are in the process of meeting with several labels. But like we said we are trying to take our time and do things right. I mean, if you have people like Rodney Jerkins, Anthony Columbus and Andrew Lane in your corner, a record label is going to pay more attention to you than if you just send them a CD. So we are taking our time, choosing the right singles to release all the while working on our live show. DC: What are some of your favorite venues to play around Detroit?

20 Detroit Live Magazine - Get into it!

Bret: Well a lot of doors have opened for us in the last few months but one club that we really enjoy playing is Albert’s on the Alley on Middlebelt and Ford Rd. in Garden City. We play there almost every Thursday. It’s one of the most beautiful clubs around and the owner, Steve Valenti, has really done a great job of creating an incredible venue. DC: Anything you’d like to say to the Detroit music fans as well as national fans who may be reading this? Christina: Yeh…in the last year and a half so much has happened. New music, a new manager, playing great shows with national artists… but one fact we are very aware of is that we still have a long way to go. We are by no means “there” yet. Yeh, we’ve learned a lot about the industry and are cautiously optimistic about signing with a label. But we are constantly aware that this is a learning process and we are grateful to be learning from some of the best people in the industry and to call home one of the greatest cities for rock and roll, Detroit. Mainly we’d just like to thank the fans for supporting us and we’d like to invite everyone to come out and party with us at Albert’s on the Alley in Garden City every Thursday.

Rock of Ages is the story of an aspiring rocker and his love interest, both of them trying to live the rockstar’s dream. “If you like having your face melted, you‘ll love this show. The girls are hot, it’s gritty and dirty, just like the scene was at the time, some venues serve beer in the aisle, and we give you LED lighters for use during the show,” states Erika Shannon, cast member and U of M graduate.” Both Erika and Lindsay expressed their excitement to come back to Detroit Rock City to sing that classic verse in Journey’s FISHER THEATER NOV 9-21ST “Don’t Stop Believin” for their friends, family, and fans. Over the last two years Detroit Live Magazine has grown dramatically. We’ve increased our circulation and page size as well as recently launching Detroit Live Eastside. We’ve interviewed nationals like Candlebox, Megadeth, Ted Nugent, Disturbed and Papa Roach, all the while making sure that the local musician is the main focus every month. We’ve worked hard to compete with corporate giants Metro Times and Real Detroit. We’ve weathered the financial storms caused by ignorant politicians and month after month been here to bring affordable advertising and publicity to Detroit bands as well as businesses. The last two years has been an exciting ride. Yet I can’t help but feel that the next two years will dwarf our current success. I and the entire staff of Detroit Live Magazine and Detroit Live Eastside would like to thank all of you who have worked hard to help promote Detroit’s only Live Music Monthly. Whether it’s by performing at or attending a Detroit Live event, advertising, or just reading and telling your friends about us, it’s the contribution of the entire community that has made Detroit Live Magazine what it is today. So from the bottom of our rock and roll hearts and on behalf of all of us at Detroit Live we’d Anthony Baker - Highwater like to give huge thanks to the many people in front of and behind the scenes who have helped us build Detroit Live Magazine into what it is today.

What these law enforcement Medical Marijuana patients to obtain officials aren’t grasping is that you don’t their medicine safely while remaining in have to agree, but you do have to accept compliance with state laws. Technically, that we live in a democracy and 65% dispensaries (Marijuana pharmacies) of Michigan residents voted for the are illegal in Michigan. This being Michigan medical marijuana act. true, where do patients go to get their medicine and why do certain cities We asked Redford Township supervisor make it harder for compassion clubs Tracy Schultz Kobylarz her and collectives to help supply legitimate thoughts about the problems patients with the medicine they need? with medical marijuana, “It’s still If you want my opinion, with our illegal federally and with the federal states struggling economy it’s a no supremacy laws you can’t overwrite or brainer, cities should be working with override federal law, so even though nonprofit organizations, entrepreneurs the people here wanted it, technically and innovators of this new industry. they can’t have it. to get kicked in on innocent people trying to follow the law? 3rd Coast Compassion representative Jamie says “any interpretation of the law that would disallow patients from consistent access to medicine, cannot be considered a valid interpretation.” Hearing this brought to mind the 24hr pain clinics that are opening up in record numbers through out the state. Anyone can walk into one of these places and walk out with a prescription for some sort of addictive, dangerous opiate, yet the police are raiding medical marijuana facilities that impose no threat to our community or its people. It’s quite contradicting and very disturbing that our politicians have no problem with these pain clinics, which supply hundreds of prescription pill addicts their medicine daily. Where is the compassion in that? Cannabis has been proven to be a non addictive, safe alternative and I am proud to say that there are a lot of reputable good people out here working hard to help progress the movement and helping patients access their medicine. Organizations such as 3rd Coast Compassion in Ypsilanti, Big Daddy’s in Oak Park and Chesterfield Twp, and Green Bee Collective located in Ann Arbor are all reputable facilities that will assist patients with their medicinal needs, also the Eden Care Group and Get It Green are both reliable delivery services that will deliver patients medicine to their homes. Its time to educate Michigan residents on the fact that medical marijuana is here to stay.
