RODGERS CHEVROLET WOODHAVEN Early last summer I attended the Detroit Live Magazine Battle of the Bands to support a friends band. As I walked in, displayed conspicuously in front of the door, was a Brand new 2013 Camaro from the company sponsoring the event, Rodgers Chevrolet. The car was beautiful and I was in the market for a new vehicle. The following week I stopped to Rodgers Chevrolet and bought a Camaro. The guys at Rodgers were great, so much so I also went back and bought a 2013 Tahoe. I believe it’s important for local businesses to support the artistic community. I support businesses that do. Frank Harris - Woodhaven Mi.

TITTLE BROTHERS CONSTRUCTION

One of the best shows I attended in 2013 was the Kiss, Ozzy Osbourne, Ronnie James Dio, White Zombie Tribute show. I was blown away at the authenticity of the performers. It was like seeing the real bands! This is the kind of show I like to see. Thanks Detroit Live Magazine and Tittle Construction for making it happen. A week after attending the show my wife decided we needed a new entry-way for our house. I remembered Tittle Construction made the Tribute show happen, so I called them. They did FANTASTIC job! I’m a now customer for life. Can’t wait until the next show!! Fred Warner Trenton Mi

MIKE CAREY MUSIC CO. WYANDOTTE I’ve always been a reader of Detroit Live Magazine. I love to support the music community. When my young daughter decided to learn an instrument I was happy to purchase a beginner guitar from Mike Carey Music in Wyandotte. I always see Mike Carey Music in Detroit Live Magazine. The people at the store were fantastic and helped me find just the right guitar for my daughter. Amanda Spirit - Wayne Mi

BIKER BOBS HARLEY DAVIDSON TAYLOR I’ve always been a big fan of Detroit Live Magazine as well as the Detroit Music scene. This summer while attending a Detroit Live Tribute Show I noticed that Biker Bobs Harley Davidson was the sponsoring Business. While I couldn’t afford to buy a new Harley this year I made it a point to shop for all the bikers in my family at Biker Bobs for accessories and apparel. Next year I’ll be in the market for a new Harley and you can bet Biker Bobs will be my first stop. Wayne Davis - Flat Rock 6 LIVE

They were the 89X Peoples Choice winner for 11 consecutive nights beating out bands Like Jack white,Muse, Blink 182 and Billy Talent.

PISTOL DAY PARADE Since The first issue of Detroit Live Magazine Pistol Day Parade has been a band that is rife with promise. They band is fully stocked with some of the areas best musicians. Their ability to write, perform and promote a great tune is indisputable. Last year they added Jason Hartless on Drums , signed with Goomba Music and toured extensively. Look for 2014 to be the year they go to the next level.

While the boys in Shock Wave may seem young, (and they are) they have more experience than many bands currently playing the Detroit scene. For the past few years Angelo Coppola and brothers Dave and Dylan Frankel have rocked venues all over Detroit. They’ve shared the stage with Sponge, The Rockets, Pop Evil, Pistol Day Parade and many more. With theses guys, its just a matter of time before music fans from all over the country know their name. 8 LIVE

SUPERLAST

One of the first things people notice about Superlast is the fact it contains a reality TV star. Drummer Rich Pyle is recognizable from his role on Hardcore Pawn and his current show Melt Down. But while Rich’s drumming is an explosive factor in creating the Superlast’s sound, it’s the combination of his drumming and the talented musicians around him that give Superlast it’s power and Charisma. Rich Pyle, Mike Azuri, John Quiroz, Tim Downs And Tim Reamer pool years of experience to create an impressive band. Their 2013 release is rising throughout the U.S on college radio and they band is in high demand for live performances.

DEAD IN 5

2013 saw the emergence of Dead in 5. Comprised of some of the Detroit Music scenes most experiences musicians this band is known for their ”in your face” Detroit Style rock n’ roll. In July 2013, the band took first place in reality TV show “American Talent Hunters” Detroit search. CAGE THE ELEPHANT STOLE CHRISTMAS Review by Jonny Reinhardt Photos by Marc Nader

The Fillmore hosted the ‘89X Stole Christmas’ bash the week before everyone’s favorite holiday and Cage The Elephant stole the show with new music from their recent release, ‘Melophobia’.

O

ver the last few years, Cage The Elephant’s founders Matt and Brad Shultz, two brothers from Bowling Green, have been receiving success with their unique new rock alternative sounds, having moved from a small town to thriving London, England, in hopes to make it big. Three albums later; having toured with the Foo Fighters, among others, having a world famous video game choose their music to theme the game, and even having living rock legend Dave Grohl fill in temp on drums are just a few events that can help explain why these guys are turning heads. It’s no wonder that 89X had to obtain this musical energy for this show! Another great mix of people all with smiles and singing voices following along to the fan favorites and even the new tracks! Those ones are only a few months old by the way, proving how die hard these alternative fans are here in Detroit. Not only was the music great...the corresponding light show was very effective and followed the different parts of the song. Nothing new, but this one stood out! On the phone with guitarist Brad before the show:
“We love Detroit, there’s just so much rock history from Iggy Pop to MC5 and those are huge influences to us. My wife is also from St. Clair Shores so the women aren’t bad either”. Brad is a funny guy and one of my favorite interviews to date. “So many good people at your [Detroit] shows...there was a homeless artist outside of St. Andrews a few years ago that drew the band and he did an amazing job...that really left an impression on me... he could be out doing bad things but chooses art instead!” What a great testament to the spirit of our city. Even our less fortunate have the energetic artistic spirit.

That spirit was clear throughout the remainder of the 89X event. Singer Matt Shultz was going 10 miles a minute for over an hour leaving people in awe at his performance. You just don’t see many frontmen doing that these days. It was hard to take your eyes off of him dancing around the stage and pumping up the crowd. The last song of the encore was Saber Tooth Tiger, a total ode to the old school sound of Iggy. During the mellow breakdown, Matt dove into the crowd and then positioned his feet onto the hands of his fans standing completely upright! It the grew silent for a few moments before he lunged himself into the crowd screaming “SABER TOOTH” as the band exploded back into the song. That’s got to be one of the coolest things I’ve seen at a show. Thank you to 89X and their drunken Santa! Cage The Elephant is a band to see. DETROITLIVEMAGAZINE.COM

Mike Leslie Band Interview with Darian Counts

For years Mike Leslie has written music and performed in cover and original bands. Yet the formation of the Mike Leslie Band in early 2012 seemed to provide the spark of success. Joining forces with Mike Parrot and Brian Reilly seemed to create a magic within the trio that has provided them with a well deserved amount of success in the last 18 months. In the last year and a half MLB has acquired an impressive amount of accolades. They’ve performed with Three Dog Night, Jimmy Vaughan, Rick Derringer , Sponge and Mitch Ryder to name a few. In 2013 the band won DOUG FM’s regional crown at the stations annual battle of the Bands. Recently I had an opportunity to speak with Mike Leslie and Mike Parrot regarding the bands past success as well as its upcoming CD and CD release party happening Jan 17th at Magic Bag. DL: When did you officially launch the MLB? ML: Well prior to 2012 I had been writing a lot of original material and wanted to start an original project. Before that I was heavily involved in the Detroit music scene but not necessarily with original bands. I decided that I wanted to take another direction. I had been in a band with Mike Parrot in the past and I felt he would be a perfect fit. We spent most of 2012 developing a music and business plan. 18 LIVE

DL: Did winning the contest open up doors for the band. DL: I really enjoyed listening to your first EP. When was that released? ML: Absolutely. Right after that we were asked to open for Three Dog Night at Chene Park on ML: We spent the summer of 2012 recording the main stage. It was an amazing show, just a the EP and recording. We had our 1st Cd release party at the Magic Stick and it went packed house and everyone especially Three very well, we packed the place and got great Dog Night (the original line up) were great press and momentum from the show. DL: What would you say was the highlight for the band of 2013? ML: Well we’ve had such a great year it’s hard to say. We played some of the biggest festivals of the summer. We also played in Canada, Chicago, Texas. I’d say the highlight of the year for us was winning the DOUG FM Battle of the bands. It started out with about 15 bands. The event was held at Chene Park and we ended up coming out on top. It really meant a lot to us to win. It just seemed to reinforce the fact to us that we were doing something right. In addition to being crowned the winner we DETROITLIVEMAGAZINE.COM

ML: I wrote about 90% of the songs on this current album. Mike Parrot has an amazing song on the album as well called Save me. DL: Who are some other local bands you like to work with? ML: We work a lot with the Infatuations; they are great friends of ours. We’ve done quite a few shows with the Howling Diablo’s, they are an incredible band and Tino Gross is the man. DL: What are you currently working on? ML: We have our debut album coming out

Jan. 17th. And we recently did a video for the song, Weather Vane its the lead single for the album. It’s available on youtube and our facebook. DL: So for your Jan 17th CD release party at the Magic Bag. Who is on the Bill with you? ML: We’ve got a couple of great bands that were excited to play with; there is Chris Degnore and the Blackdrops and Seven Birds One Stone. We’re excited to perform with both. Mike Parrot: Seven Birds is a great band. They have a fantastic fan base and really know how to bring the party. DL: Do you find it difficult getting the sound you want being just a three piece? ML: No not at all. I’ve always been the only guitarist in most of the bands I’ve been in, so I’ve been used to having to play the rhythm as well as lead. A lot of our biggest influences are bands like Creem, Hendrix Nirvana and stuff like that. They were all three pieces as well. For the CD we brought in our friend Yorg Kerasoitis to add some keys to fill things out a bit but that’s about it. Mike Parrot: I would say that most of the songs on the CD are pretty stripped sown, yeh we added a bit of keys but mainly we want the CD to sound as close to the live experience as possible. ML: Yes, what you hear on the CD is exactly what you’ll hear at the show. DL: Great. Hey guys, thanks for taking the time to talk with us. We’ll see you at the Magic Bag on Jan 17th

The Rock and Roll Lawyer

Sheldon Kay

Photo Christopher Bjornberg

With over 30 years as a practicing attorney, Detroit area native Sheldon Kay has covered a lot of legal ground. Add the fact that he’s been actively playing guitar since 1963 and you quickly realize he is one accomplished individual. The interesting aspect is how Kay was able to marry the two together. Sheldon Kay’s entrance into the music world came naturally because, during the ‘50s and early ‘60s, his uncle was the band director for Detroit’s WXYZ radio and television studios. As head of the Hal Gordon Orchestra, Kay’s uncle became good friends with rising stars like comedian Soupy Sales. “He had all kinds of musicians at his house,” references Kay about his uncle. “One thing he always said to me was if I could play as good as (guitarist) Joe Messina I could be in his band. I heard this guy’s name my whole life. Of course, he was one of the Funk Brothers.” Listening to Messina’s jazzy and sophisticated licks and phrasing initially inspired young Sheldon but it was the burgeoning sounds of rock ‘n roll that really grabbed his ear. “Early on guitar sounds always came through to me,” says Kay. “I remember hearing a song called ‘Jezebel’

by Frankie Laine and that calypso guitar rang through my head. Growing up in the ‘50s this guy George Barnes played some great solos on songs like ‘Diana’ and ‘Lipstick on Your Collar.’ But at this junior high sock hop this guy hit an E chord like a scene out of that movie ‘Back to the Future.’ I felt electricity when I heard that. The guitar player in the band was Kenny Gimble and I went up and asked him if he’d give me lessons.” From the blues basics he gleaned from Gimble, Kay practiced incessantly, with his heart set on becoming a professional musician. However, while pursuing that career path, he received some sobering advice. “My uncle was an easy going guy but he told me if I didn’t become a lawyer he was gonna break my fingers,” says Kay. “And I was a hippie at the time smoking a lot of weed and stuff so that scared me. I said I better get into a profession. He said ‘if you go to law school you can play in my band.’ When I got out of law school I asked him if I could play in his

band and he said NO! He just wanted me to go to school—and it worked!” Kay has been somewhat of a pioneer in the field of entertainment law and was one of the first in the southeast Michigan area to practice it as well as serve as an educator on the subject.

“When I was in school in 1974 they didn’t teach it,” explains Sheldon. “So when I got out of school I had to learn it all on my own through my own study and going to seminars. I started putting on seminars at the Detroit Musicians Union and started getting clients. I also ran ads in the Metro Times. Eventually I represented Aretha Franklin for eight years.” In addition to entertainment law, Kay has taken on a wide range of criminal, civil and divorce cases as well. His unique perspective on those he represents, perhaps, sheds some light on his feel for people. “I love criminals. I get along with them—and I’m not joking,” says Sheldon. “They are easy people to deal with. I don’t have to worry what I say. I can be myself around them and they have great stories.

They have interesting ways of looking at the world and how they get around things. The Constitution really comes into play when you work on criminal cases and you really get to do things. On Fridays from 6-7pm EST on WCXI 1160 AM and live streaming on www. wpon.com you can listen to Sheldon Kay on “The Rock & Roll Lawyer Show.” Born out of Kay’s love for classic radio deejays and vintage rock ‘n roll, he has been host of the lively music/law-oriented radio talk show since March 2005. “The music is varied and it’s rare roots rock ‘n roll from the ‘50s and ‘60s,” says Kay. “Jimmy James from ‘Honey Radio’ is one of many that work on the show and we merge law, music and entertainment into one entity. “ Some of the guests they’ve had on the show have been music legends like Tommy James, who discussed his auto- biographical book Me, the Mob and the Music. The program also broadcast from Cleveland’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and have done spotlights on DNA evidence and the Kwame Kilpatrick trial. “I call what we do ‘underground AM radio,’” says Kay. “There’s a mystique about us. We’re so cool you’ve gotta go out of your way to hear us!” Sheldon’s philosophy regarding his radio show runs hand in hand with his approach to participating in a band. The bottom line is that he wants to really turn the audience on! “I’m really particular about music preparation,” explains Kay. “I wanna make sure that the listener gets a new listening experience no matter what age they are. So the older people that listen

to something, say I never knew a particular band played that and the younger listeners will say that’s cool stuff because they never heard it before.” The veteran of countless bands, Sheldon and the members of the band The Sheltones hit Detroit area stages with that same manifesto. Playing venues such as Ferndale’s New Way Bar and popular blues haunt Callahan’s, Sheldon Kay (guitar), Marcus Allen (guitar/ vocals), Peter Z. (drums/vocals) and Joel Faddol (keyboards/vocals) are turning heads and bending ears of young and old alike, with spot on versions of classic power pop and rock from The Animals, The Who, The Yardbirds, The Rolling Stones and many others. “Our motto is we don’t wanna be good, we wanna be feared,” says Kay. “I really wanna do it right DETROITLIVEMAGAZINE.COM

this time because I’ve been in bands where I was the only one practicing. In this band we’re all a team. We wanna get it right because we’re too old to do it wrong!” In 2014 Sheldon Kay will be writing a column in this very magazine. Some of the issues he will be addressing will be things musicians go through such as divorce, bankruptcy, music copyrights and internet downloading. “The thing that musicians often don’t do is get legal advice at the beginning,” says Kay. “What if they’re stopped by the police going to a gig in Canada and they have a criminal record? You need to plan ahead and get it resolved. Do your work ahead of time.” --Eric Harabadian ###

Long Live the Queen Review by Scotti Moore Photos by Marc Nader

Electricity! That sums up the atmosphere inside The Motor City Casino’s Soundboard recently. It was a gathering of who’s who combined with her dedicated fan base. The Soundboard was buzzing with excitement to witness the return of Aretha Franklin to the stage. The homegrown “Queen of Soul” was about to rekindle the undying love affair with her beloved Detroit. Just to be in the same city with “The Queen” is incredible enough let alone the opportunity to bare witness to what she has blessed the world with for so many years. The anticipation was finally met when The Aretha Franklin Orchestra started the show with a beautiful instrumental medley of Ms. Franklin’s history of hits. When Aretha finally hit the stage she was greeted with a standing ovation proving the earned respect of her legendary status. As she waived to her fans I couldn’t help noticing how good she looked after recovering from her medically induced absence. Graced in a beautiful glowing white gown, Aretha brought the power instantly with her rendition of Detroit’s own Jackie Wilson’s “Higher and Higher.” Then it was one hit after another with songs like “Your Love” and “Sparkle” the Queen of Soul was just getting started with her book of hits. Aretha had a few surprises throughout the night from accenting your hit “Day Dreaming” with The Detroit-Windsor Ballet Dancers to a spotlight performance by Detroit’s St. James Choir. Franklin continued to get roars from the Queens court with hits like “Chain of Fools” and “Never Loved a Man.”. Aretha even had a little diva moment by instructing the sound engineer on how the mix should be adjusted before she went into Sam Cooke’s “You Send Me.” Next came the most heartfelt moment of the evening when Aretha moved into a tribute to her dear departed friend Whitney Houston, who lovingly always called her Auntie Aretha, with the song “I Will Always Love You.” The show wouldn’t be complete with out going back to her roots in Gospel. The Soundboard was instantly transformed into a church atmosphere as the choir returned to accompany Ms. Franklin with a very soulful version of “Amazing Grace” and “Time for a Miracle” while she acknowledged her father’s famous New Bethel Church which is displayed on the large screen behind her amazing orchestra. Aretha closes out the night with, of course, her signature song “Respect” which judging by the reaction of the crowd she hasn’t lost one bit of. This evening solidified the love affair between Detroit and “The Queen of Soul” is stronger than ever and the Motor City is where Legends are born!

A conversation with:

Guitar Virtuoso Pete Metropolis

This month Detroit Live magazine talks to one of Detroit’s most innovative and hard working guitarist Pete Metropolis. Pete and his band Rocktropolis have been impressing crowds for years. In addition to playing shows all over Michigan and the US the band were prominent competitors in Detroit Live Magazines “Blow up my Band 2013” Competition. DL spoke to Pete to learn a little more of what drives this Guitar Prodigi! DL: How did you get your start in music? Pete: I come from a family who share a deep

Pete: I started to really take off with my playing after age 13, it was then that I had discovered that no matter what amp or guitar I played through my style was distinct, especially the way I played a lick compared to my peers. My father, Sam Metropoulos (bass/keys for ROCKTROPOLIS), played a huge part in my early years. My life, from 13 years old and on, was everyday to make music or be with the greatest musicians in our area. My chops are due to all the years of practice. I would easily spend 8 hours a day while I was a teenager and young adult writing, playing and improving with or without other musicians.

far. I really am looking forward to what the future may bring for me. DL: “Cityscape” is something very special. Can you tell the listeners a little more about the song, It’s meaning or inspiration? Pete : “Cityscape” is actually a collaboration piece. The entire melody/lead guitar is played by me. The inspiration for this song came from feeling a sense of accomplishment, similar to that feeling you get when you have moved on to the next stage of something happening that’s life changing. DL: Can you tell us about your current recording project, ROCKTROPOLIS album “3113”? Pete: Well, our ROCKTROPOLIS album “3113” seems to have had its hills along the way. We have been looking to release this album a lot sooner. But, unfortunately sometimes things don’t always run that smooth. One of the biggest hang ups was our engineer upgraded his DAW and upgraded his plug-ins. I don’t know how many times we have remixed this thing, and fighting for the tones was a challenge. All the guitar work was recorded with Line 6 Pod Farm 2, which is line direct and has a very clean sound unlike what an amp produces. This is a new world which I have started to embark on and I see its usefulness with the layering and modeling as it is very close to the real thing. I still prefer my rig when playing live. DL: Is there a spiritual aspect of your music? How does it effect you emotionally?

love for music. Many of my family members are highly gifted musicians. I was introduced to music and musical instruments at a very early age. I was exposed to many different styles of music ranging from Classical, Ethnic (traditional and contemporary Greek, Polish, Russian, Spanish), Pop, and of course, the many different types of Rock. Because of this exposure by people with intense love for music, my love for music grew exponentially. When I was 11 years old, my dad bought me with my first guitar. He took me to Elderly Instruments (Lansing, MI) and helped me select a Washburn Telecaster copy (brown sunburst). I still have that guitar which I “dust off” from time to time. My first amp was a Fender Princeton Chorus. Some of my earliest influences were Alex Lifeson (Rush), Brian May (Queen), Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple), Yngwie Malmsteen (Malmsteen), and Iron Maiden. DL: How long have you been playing and how did you develop your signature sound? 24 LIVE

Pete: Thank you for your question. I do believe we all possess this inner connection with our talents but it’s up to us to unlock the secrets they hold. I have been very passionate toward music since a DL: You’ve worked with some great musicians. young age and had a lot of defining moments that led me down the road. so far. 2013 was my first time for a nomination in the Detroit Music Awards. I ended up with 3 nominations in all. It was very flattering to know that I had that much support from such a strong music community. It is so hard to be accepted into the market, as I said, and I feel very thankful for everyone who supported me and the music I write. DL: How do you feel music has evolved or changed over the years? Your music definitely has the modern edge But what are your thoughts about the past, present and future of music? Pete: I don’t think music has changed as much as the ones who are writing it. That is what has changed the music over the years. So, what has happened to the artists over the years? Intellectual writing with feeling… I just don’t hear too often. When learning music I never really learned how to play my favorite guitarist’s style or my favorite band’s music. When I knew enough to play, I would let my feelings take it away and start to hone feelings and techniques to create something magical. Music isn’t about being the best or being the greatest. It’s about being YOUR best, YOUR greatest, by being the best that YOU can be. No Competition...we all just do what we do. I feel a lot of young musicians get caught up in learning to play other musician’s songs or they just want to be the fastest player. They never give themselves an opportunity to grow and see what they can write on their own. I have seen amazing players that can play any song but have never wrote or will write their own music. I’m looking forward to seeing what is to come because the age of technology is here which now gives kids a chance to be exposed to music they want to hear as well as music they would not normally hear on the radio or MTV/VH1,etc. When I was growing up, what was hot on the radio was Rap. I felt like an outcast liking and listening to stuff like Rush, Yngwie, Iron Maiden, Queen, etc. Technology gives us an open door to be turned on to ALL types of music...not just what the industry spoons out. DL: What equipment do you currently use for live gigs? Pete: Some of the gear I use for live performances: Yamaha and Parker guitars, Engl

’83 US Festival Days 1-3 (MVD Visual MVD5946D):“I just wanted to throw one big party in the middle of nowhere,” said former Apple Computers co-founder Steve Wozniak. And that’s exactly what he did! The US Festival 1983 was a successful follow up to the inaugural music fest which took place the previous year. This DVD is an officially sanctioned documentary by award-winning filmmaker Glenn Aveni and Wozniak’s own philanthropic corporation UNUSON. Highlights and full song performances are included by Divinyls, INXS, The English Beat, Stray Cats, Men at Work, The Clash, Judas Priest, Triumph, Scorpions, Berlin, Quarterflash, U2, Missing Persons and Stevie Nicks. There are amusing behind the scenes interviews--past and present--with Wozniak, some of the participating artists and MTV’s Mark Goodman. This was one of the first mega music festivals of its kind and this fresh retrospective film does a fine job of serving as a comprehensive time capsule. Gina Kronstadt, Come Over (Falloff Records FO 1002):

Singer-songwriter Gina Kronstadt might not be a household name, but, chances are, you’ve probably heard her. She’s performed on countless movie soundtracks, supported contestants on “American Idol,” The Voice,” “X Factor” and “America’s Got Talent” and recorded with everyone from Michael Jackson to Rod Stewart. With this much anticipated debut, The Los Angeles-based session and side woman steps out with a whimsical and cleverly crafted collection of jazz, pop and soulful compositions. Along for the ride are some of L.A.’s best players, including Zappa alum Walt Fowler on trumpet, Bob Sheppard on sax and ubiquitous bassist Christian McBride. Kronstadt has a voice that is sweet as honey and caresses your ear in a relaxed and seductive manner. Title cut “Come Over” is moody and feels like a dream accompanied by some tasty muted trumpet and strings. “Magic” is lightly funky and features a moderate drive and the “Moondance”-like “Turn Around” swings and is ultra cool! Eight songs in all; fans of Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell and music that is lush, with an air of sophistication will appreciate where this talented lady is coming from.

Diamond Lane, Sapphire (www.diamondlanerocks.com ): Here’s a quintet from Los Angeles that totally defines the term “modern heavy metal.” Diamond Lane packs a major wallop, with a classic twin guitar onslaught that truly annihilates. The rhythms are thick and Brandon Baumann’s lead vocals can hang with the best of them. This five song disc offers sturdy and dependable hard rock and metal designed to get your party started in high gear. This is the kind of musical approach that classic combos like Motley Crue and Faster Pussycat forged a decade or two before. However, having said that, let’s not relegate it to ancient artifact status, either. Granted, it seems radio and major media have been obsessed with Disney-influenced pop and “X Factor” for far too long now. But, given half a chance, Diamond Lane has a meaty hookfilled type of sound that could, once again, dominate national play lists. Check out the loud and proud title track or rabble rousing “ Haymaker” to see what I mean. 28 LIVE

BULLETPROOF SNOW

By Molly Page. In December Detroit Live Magazine and Bulletproof Snow sponsored a contest for up and coming journalists “Teens that Rock!”. Fans were invited to write an article to introduce the band to the Detroit Music community and the winning article would be published in an upcoming issue of Detroit Live Magazine. The winner of the contest was Molly Page. Here is her article. Congratulations Molly!

Hailing from Livingston County, Michigan the boys from the band Bulletproof Snow have used a lifetime of musical talent to come together and create a sound that stands out from the regular rock genre. Their sound challenges the well-known mold of rock music and is blazing a new path into today’s diverse musical landscape. The band is composed of four teens between the ages of sixteen and seventeen: Trey McLaughlin on lead vocals/guitar, Jake Yacobelli on Guitar/vocals, Matt Coon on Bass and Connor Cheney on Drums. performances. Having already had their music played on the popular Michigan based radio stations WRIF (101.1) and 89X, it’s clear that these teens are well beyond the tier of Teenage Garage Band. Since March of 2012, BPS has performed with passion and conviction to audiences all over Michigan. With each gig they perform, Bulletproof Snow is closer to achieving that level of skill and recognition what they’ve strived for. Their future looks bright, both as a group and as individual musicians. It’s my prediction that it won’t be long before kids start telling their parents that they want to be just like their favorite member of Bulletproof Snow. Perhaps B.P.S. will become a common place acronym, used on a household level. Even if all that happens I bet they’ll still be the same relaxed musicians who started a band together due to a shared passion of music.
