music scene, but to music fans all over the country. DC: What are some things that you’ve learned from other bands that have helped you make this project the best it can be?

Two years ago, when the guys from Superlast met in the recording studio to lay down tracks for an upcoming album, they were far from being a band. As hired studio musicians, their main goal at the time was to create individual tracks for the music they were given. Each had their own job to do and that’s all it was at the time, a job. But through spending time in the studio together, they began to realize that while each of them were talented musicians; when they all joined together the music produced was greater than the sum of its parts. It didn’t take long for the guys to realize they were sitting on what could be a great band. The album they recorded ended up being the debut release for the band and the beginning to something great. Over the last 2 years they have played all over the country. Their hard work, talent and a bit of publicity from Rich (the drummers) day job, Hardcore Pawn has helped Superlast make an impact not only on the Detroit

A LIFE IN THE LIMELIGHT

By Darian Counts

Rich: Well, one thing that has proven valuable is the relationships we’ve built over the last couple of years. In this band, unlike many in the past, is that we are all close friends. We hang out whether we are making music or not; that ability to get along and have a good time, has really affected the band in a positive way. I think that reflects what comes out of the speakers or on the radio. Also, these guys are great musicians and just being in the band with them makes me constantly strive to be a better musician and I think the same happens with them. John Q: Yeh, it’s pretty much the chemistry that’s involved with people who get along and enjoy each others company. We have a great time when we are playing and people pick up on that when we play. It contributes to the writing as well as the performance aspect of the band. DC: What is one of the largest obstacles Superlast faces right now? Rich: Well, as with most bands one of the hardest things we face is getting people out to the gigs. I mean you can hear our

Rich: Obviously, the popularity of the show has opened up many doors for us. We’ve been in touch with a lot of different people. We’ve done some stuff with Jesse Dupree from Jackyl and we’ve been invited to play Sturgis, so we’re really excited about that. Also, we’ll be playing the Full Throttle Saloon and have been in touch with Bob Seger’s management group; so yeah, the show has opened up a lot of doors. DC: What is your opinion of the Detroit music scene right now? Rich: Detroit has one of the best music scenes in the country. When we go to another town and mention that we are from Detroit,it is instant credibility. From diversity and adversity comes great music, and we all know that Detroit is an incredibly diverse town and well…Detroit pretty much has invented adversity.

music or download it from ITunes, but it’s a huge difference from hearing it live. Without exception, when people come to a Superlast show, we get the same response. Typically the response is something like, “Wow… I did not expect that.” I mean we are a live band and what we’ve found is that it’s just a matter of letting people hear us and they’re hooked. DC: I hear you’re working on a new album right now? How does it differ from your “American Lunatic” album? John Q: The stuff on our current album was written by a good friend of ours who, unfortunately, has health problems which pretty much restricts his availability. Obviously, we’ve taken the basic idea of most of his songs and made them our own. But right now, what we’re excited about is the new album. Over the last couple of years, we’ve had time to get to know each other as a band and to really gel. I think you’re really going to notice that on the next album. This one is all “us” and we’re excited to have it hit the streets. We have most of it written and right now we are really looking for someone who wants to get behind us and help

Alyssa Simmons By Jordan Weatherhead

The bar was crowded with a heavy sense of awe as we entered. All chairs were facing the south wall and glued to the culprit. Spellbound, they watched intensely. From a young blonde bombshell came a roar from deep within. Her energy expounded from the inside and flooded the small pub. You’d expect to hear a country song, or something of dandelions and rainbows, but no, she was belting out the lyrics to a beloved Led Zeppelin song, “Whole Lotta Love”. I laughed when I recognized it and then quickly found the one vacant table in the establishment to rest my hat. What followed was a string of beautifully mismatched tunes. The gorgeous songstress who was commanding the attention of the audience (even the bartenders and servers couldn’t help but get distracted), crooned the lyrics to songs by KISS, Grace Potter, and even 4 Non Blondes. She was accompanied by the talented drummer, Steve Tocco and keyboard player, Marc Doiron, on the small stage that she was taking full advantage of. When she finally took a break, the onlookers broke from their trance and the bar seemed to go back to normal again. Her name: Alyssa Simmons. *** Growing up in the northern subs of Detroit, Michigan, Alyssa entered the limelight at an early age, and has yet to leave its bright glow. Simmons started singing opera around the house when she was just a toddler. “I was that child that ran around singing and annoying everybody”, she laughs. “I started taking vocal lessons at age 9. It started off with little talent shows and then went on to bigger competitions. I was a show-time kid for the Apollo Theater in New York and Disney flew me out when I was 15 to audition for Hannah Montana. That didn’t work out,of course, but it was just a very cool opportunity. I was 16 when I met with the president of Atlantic Records. So I have a lot under my belt.” Alyssa is a gifted song-writer and vocalist who has been gracing venues in the Detroit-Metro area for years now. She has played in settings in different states around the U.S., including the Hard Rock Café in Atlantic City. With a strong following of fans from not only Michigan, but around the world, Alyssa says she hopes to one day go on tour with her original songs, featured on her EP entitled, “I’m Ready”. “It’s my anthem!”, the vibrant Simmons exclaims. “The previous stuff

never panned out like I’d hoped when I was young. My head wasn’t in the right place back then and my style of music was not where it is now. ‘I’m Ready’ is a statement to myself and everyone else that I’m where I need to be to continue in this business.” When I asked Alyssa what has been the biggest success so far, she explained, “Through all of my different experiences, I’d say the most important thing that has happened is just coming into my own and growing up as an artist and as a person. Everything I’ve been through in this industry has taught me a little more about myself. I definitely feel like I know who I am now and I feel like that’s the biggest accomplishment. That’s the most important thing.” *** The second time I had the pleasure of seeing Alyssa captivate an audience was just as magical. The bar we were going to was a bit different than the first. Entering the bar known for its college crowd and young-minded mentality, I wondered if it’d be a bit more challenging for sweet-spoken girl to get their attention to stick. In our interview, Alyssa was humble, quiet, even a bit reserved, but when I walked into yet another crowded bar, she showed no panic. The fearless lioness had the bar-goers in the palm of her hand. As I scanned the place, I saw people from all age groups and genders, with eyes and ears fixed to the fascinating diva on stage. Back in our interview I had asked, “So it’s been said that people put the word ‘Diva’ on you as a label, what are your thoughts on that?” She laughs and says, “I just take it as a compliment. I am in no way a ‘diva’ by the normal sense of the word. I think it just means, for me, that I give a strong female performance and have a great love for music.” As I watched her passion pour out onto the crowd and pull their attention towards her, I found that the word ‘Diva’ as used to describe Alyssa Simmons is just that. She is a valiant, young female performer who never quits. Her vocals are something like you’ve never heard before; and wrap that up in a pretty package with an attitude that charms and possesses, it’s no wonder why the label fits. “It’s just fun to watch people light up! They will sit and listen so patiently through different styles of music and when I get to their favorites, they just smile and really get into it. I love that!” she tells me, while sipping on her water politely.

The calm and mild girl I met within the interview is now bent over, bellowing out a long note that shocks even me. People start engulfing the dance floor as she finishes the note she steps down to join them. A few songs later, she does my favorite. An original on her EP called, “Stargazers”. People turn their attention to her now in a different way. The buzz of the conversations die down and a respectful silence fills the building as she resonates hauntingly, the melodies of her catchy self-written lyrics. I mouth the lyrics along quietly; as do many other fans, which clearly have had this song in their heads for a while. The applause is loud when she’s done and observe one table over, her parents and friends beaming proudly. “We’re just so proud of her”, her father expresses to me during one of her breaks. “She’s worked so hard and has come so far. She always amazes us.” He gazes lovingly in her direction as she gives away hugs to her fans and friends. Big thanks can be given to her parents for raising Alyssa with the diverse love of music she consistently instills in all her performances. Her parents, who she says are her everyday heroes, took Simmons to her first KISS concert when she was a child. Their house was always leaking the musical notes of Motown artists such as Aretha, Stevie, and Gladys. They mixed that with the sounds of classic rock and roll and it inevitably created the unique sound that is distinctively: “Alyssa Simmons”. “My voice seems to fall into soul very well and I sing that the easiest, but I love it all so much. I really try to incorporate every genre in all of my songs, even if it seems impossible.”

Detroit Live Magazine - You know you Love it! 9

Simmons best categorizes her music as being Pop/Soul and is influenced greatly by current British artist Adele. Whether it’s Zeppelin or Sugar Land, a drum solo, or an enchanting original song, Alyssa Simmons shows will keep you entertained all night long. “We’re like an i-Pod on shuffle,” she jokes. “It’s so fun to get to play all different kinds of music in one night.” Simmons has been in the limelight her whole life and is nowhere near ready to take a break now. If anything, this gifted, young singer-songwriter is just getting started. I suggest you all check out one of her shows while she is in your area, because one thing is for certain; this is a star on the rise! Alyssa’s EP, “I’m Ready”, is available at all of her shows. Once you hear the powerful vocals of this talented and fascinating woman, you’ll be hooked. You can log on to www.alyssasimmons. com to check out all of her upcoming shows and videos. A DAY TO REMEMBER

By Ryan LaPointe

Coming off two sold-out shows at the Royal Oak Music Theatre and a 2nd stage headline spot at Rock on the Range, Florida metal-core giants, A Day to Remember, are once again making their way around the U.S. in support of 2010’s, What Separates Me From You. This time though, they get to share the stage with dozens of other bands, playing the main stage of the 2011 Vans Warped Tour. Detroit Live had the chance to talk with guitarist/vocalist, Neil Westfall, right before they hit the stage at Comerica Park last month. DL: Playing with so many bands on the Warped Tour, are there any who have influenced you that you’re looking forward to playing with? NF: When we were growing up, Less Than Jake, was a big influence; mainly them, there’s not a lot of older bands on Warped Tour this year. There’s a lot of metalcore and post-hardcore bands this year, which is cool because we listen to guys like The Devil Wears Prada and The Acacia Strain. I like that there are bands we look up to, as well as, bands that are our peers that we respect too. DL: You guys blew up fast…It’s amazing. How do you feel about that? NF: It is amazing, it’s surreal. It’s something you never expect, but always hope will happen. That’s why we are all out here; you want to be a big band, and to have it happen is so surreal. DL: You guys sold out back to back shows at Royal Oak. NF: That venue is so awesome!!

DL: With the success of the album, headlining Warped Tour, being on ROTR, & 2 sold-out shows, did you guys anticipate all of these things to happen so fast? NF: No, but we were prepared to do it as long as it took, but we honestly never expected it to happen. It still blows our minds to this day! We’re just young kids from a small town in Florida and to just come out and play the music that we like and have people respond to it the way that they do, I mean, it’s the best feeling that you can have making music. DL: What are your plans after this, since you’ve been on the road relentlessly since the album came out? NF: We plan to take a little break, write & relax, and get our sanity back, then hopefully go back on tour! DL: Any stories from playing in Detroit? NF: I payed a bum to buy me alcohol once and he never came back, learned that lesson quick! First time we played in Detroit, it was right after they filmed the part for 8 Mile at The Shelter and they were all showing us that the actors were here and there and we were all like awesome! The next time we got to play upstairs at St. Andrews. DL: Alright cool, anything going on with any other big festivals? NF: We love playing festivals & want to do some more international ones! We did Europe before and it was crazy! We would love to try and do Japan as well!

DL: The album is on heavy rotation, and on all of our radio stations here. So how was playing Rock DL: Nice! Anything you’d like to say to your on the Range? fans? NF: Rock on the Range was a lot different because, at some festivals, it’s hard for us to find our place because we’re new, but there the crowd made us feel welcome. It was really cool.

NF: Keep coming to our shows! Get our music however you can! Just come and support us by coming to shows & bring a friend! DL: Good stuff! Thanks a lot guys and have a great set! For more information on A Day to Remember, check out www.adtr.com

Tiny’s Revolution

12/1/10 9/1/11

Damn I love this town. As a promoter/ booker dealing with bands at times can be mind-numbing, but well worth it. Many bands are great to deal with, but many more have become family. Anyone that knows me knows that I have been through some really tough times between my health and the recent passing of my father. Many local musicians have made things a lot easier with their support and heart. Bill Causey of Kill Whitey is one. When Bill found out I have the beginning stages of Parkinson’s Disease, he now has turned a future Dangermen Clubhouse Party at Rack ‘n’ Roll into a Parkinson’s fundraiser, all I can say is thank you with all of my heart. Bill is one of the most charitable people I have ever met and it is an honor to call him a friend. My boys from Forest Wade stepped up too. When they found out, they decided that a portion of the proceeds from their upcoming cd release party will go to Parkinson’s as well. Daniel, Aaron, Roger and Dean have also been more concerned with me as an individual than what I can do for them. I love those guys and will do anything for them too. Thank you Forest Wade, thank you. The love and support from everyone keeps me going. It keeps me humble and I also know that Terry Martin, former Ray Street Park bassist, along with James Plankey, Chris Lucas from Underland and Sean Baker from Sean Baker Orchestra are planning a show for me to help with some stuff. It will take place in November at Rack ‘n’ Roll. I can’t thank folks enough, but I feel these people should be recognized. Sad note to hear is Living Like Ghosts will be no more. That is depressing considering this band was amazing. One of the best live shows ever, energy from beginning to end. They will be missed. Corey Boland informed of some future projects that I am pumped for but I will

The summer has been hotter than hell and the I know it’s hard to imagine. If you’re over 21, rumors have been sweltering! you remember waiting for 4 hours in line for the Millenium Force. Guitarist brothers, David Frankel and Dylan Frankel, combine with Angelo Cappola to create a high energy rock and roll Goliath that can entertain a crowd of any age. Taking the stage next, in keeping with our underage afternoon theme, were The Defectives. Making their debut appearance, these guys while still young, were fully capable of throwing down some of the most authentic punk rock since the Ramones. In true puck style, theses guys raged against the man with all the ferocity and vitriol of a modern day sex pistols. Kill Whitey. These guys definitely come to play. Bill Causey, Mike Williams, Ernie Peterson, Steve Pagnucco took the stage around 3 o’clock and threw down some of the ballsiest, in your face, hardcore metal of the entire show. There was no hesitation with these guys that their music was tight and loud and their lead singer, figuratively grabbed the entire crowd by the throat and shared with them the intensity of Kill Whitey (and the crowd loved it). w w w. f a c e b o o k . c o m / K i l l w h i t e y 1

This

July saw the return of the Detroit Live magazine Dirty Dozen Concert at Joe’s Prime Time in Gibraltar. The Dirty Dozen has evolved into a downriver rock and roll tradition highlighting some of the best bands on the Detroit Rock and Roll scene and this year was no exception. Bands like 34 Bliss, Forest Wade, Fall Prey, Paul Samotis, The Defectives, Rickett Pass, Treynreck, Distant Sun, Underland, Kill Whitey, braved the heat and pulled off one one of the most entertaining shows of the year. Kicking off the show this year was crowd favorite Paul Samotis. Paul’s percussive coustic guitar playing style is as entertaining as it is unique. Over the last few years, Paul has become a staple of Detroit Live events and a favorite among the downriver concert-goer’s. Find Paul Samotis on facebook.

Up next was a band who could be considered an eastside invader to the show (we welcome our east side rock and roll brothers to this great downriver event). Angelo Cappola and the boys took the stage early in the afternoon before a crowd of adorning fans. The boys all around the age of 15

Early in the 90 degree afternoon, Treynrek took the stage next. Greg Paddock and the boys from the “Rek” are experienced musicians and it showed. From the first song, it was evident that this was a band worth seeing. Originals mixed with heavy covers from Godsmack and Velvet Revolver defined their high energy performance. Greg Paddock, Jamie Ratliff, Shawn Busch, Nate Delong, Ba Grassel Have the skills, chops and the experience to know exactly what to do with this late afternoon crowd and they did it. Last month the band 34 Bliss was featured on the cover of Detroit Live Magazine. When they took the stage at the 3rd Annual Dirty Dozen, many from the downriver area had no idea what to expect. Granted, leadPhoto singer Rocquel M.G.Nader makes quite an impression physically, but “How’s the band?” people wanted to know. Well any questions about Rocquel’s and the bands chops were quickly put to rest. From the very first note 34 Bliss played showed they are ready for Prime Time. From their originals to the incredible version of Heart’s “Crazy on you”, Rocquel and the boys showed what they are made of. Believe it or not, this band is as talented as Rocquel is stunning. 34 Bliss is: Jonny Neville, Phil Steuer, Spider, Palmer Krehel & Rocquel Wallace Find 34 Bliss on FaceBook Rickett Pass. This band of perpetual rednecks is one of my favorites of all time. Mason Damn Tinsley and the downriver soggy bottom boys began their pluckin’ and hollerin’ to the delight of a crowd that reacted as if they can’t be more than one generation out of the hills. Ted Whitman’s apparently genetically in- bread skills at washtub bassin’ combined with Joe Vega on Mandolin, Mason on Banjo and Matt Hicks on Guitar, throw a vibe that is unequaled in the Detroit area. The authenticity of the music is undeniable. One of my favorite aspects of this band is the fact that they are an original project; even though many of their songs have a

For years, Underland has been blistering crowds all over Detroit. This was their second appearance at the Detroit Live Dirty Dozen and just as expected, Lou (guitars vocs) Chris (bass/vocs) and Law (drums) served up a double-dose of dark Underlandish metal. The Underland fans were out in force to support their favorite band and as usual, when it was all said and done, the band left the entire Detroit Live Audience sweaty, frenzied and blown away by a tidal wave of Underland Rock and Roll. Fronted by Wyatt Wade these guys have been on the scene for a few years and have definitely established themselves as a band to be reckoned with. Their music has a captivating quality and these guys know how to put on a show. Songs like Pure Evil demonstrate their fantastic songwriting ability but the true test of their songwriting will be with the release of their new CD, “Peach”, set for release on Sept 24th. The artists that performed at the 3rd annul Dirty Dozen were all (mostly) sober, on time and prepared to perform. Not only did they NOT bring drama, they brought professionalism, and that’s what makes the summertime tradition such an incredible event. Huge thanks to all the bands who performed this year as well as the hundreds of fans who showed up to support the entire music scene. Join us next year as we fire up the mid-summer rock and roll machine and do it all again... Till then, see you the DL bag 33yr. Celebration at Rack and Roll on Oct 8th.

On Sunday July 24th at 8:30 P.M. sharp, Paul McCartney stepped foot on his giant stage in our backyard and played his soul for 2 ½ hours. At age 69, Paul has not missed a beat; his stage antics with winks and fist pumping followed by a polished highenergy performance, made this concert one for the books. He took us back into time and played to the present. Paul even honored Motown by performing “Hitch Hike” by the late By M.G. Nader great Marvin Gaye. Nothing got left in the bag, from fireworks during Live and Let Die, a toast to Detroit and playing the Beatles hits like we just heard them yesterday! It was a great night packed with much emotion. 38,000+ fans got to witness a little nostalgia and take a musical journey they will never ever forget! The worst part of this concert was that it had to end and how fitting was it that the last song he performed during his second encore was “The End”.

Paul McCartney Invades Detroit Rock N Roll was changed forever when Paul McCartney and the Beatles invaded America. Their invasion changed how we view live concerts. Through Paul’s music, he has taught us to love, live without prejudice and how to get by with just a little help from a friend. After a 35-year wait, Detroit finally got invaded by Sir Paul McCartney and his Band.

Detroit, one of five stops on McCartney’s summer stadium tour, was met by the threat of thunderstorms and heavy rain. This had no impact on the thousands that made their way to Comerica Park for Paul’s “On the Run” tour concert. I am not sure, but I think Paul and Mother Nature had some kind of deal because it poured and stormed all around the Thank you Sir Paul McCartney for Metropolitan area except at Comerica Park. Maybe John bringing your music to life in our great and George had something to do with it; I don’t know, but it city we call home! seemed like it was just a little more than luck!

By Eric Harabadian There is a neighborhood in downtown Detroit, bounded by Gratiot and Brush streets, just blocks from Greektown that, at the core of the metro area, is bustling with a vibrant and rich cultural history. The address 1427 Randolph Street and houses the new UDetroit Café, which sits directly in the middle of the Paradise Valley Entertainment and the Cultural Center. Paradise Valley holds a special place in Motor City lore. During the 1940s and ‘50s, it was the mecca for several black-owned businesses, restaurants and nightclubs. Blues icon, John Lee Hooker, was a resident and developed his sound there. And everyone from Duke Ellington and Count Basie to Pearl Bailey and Ella Fitzgerald made many appearances there. That significant slice of Motownstyled Americana was not lost on Brian and Mark Pastoria. The two set up shop in this historical district over 17 years ago with their Harmonie Park recording studios (The area was changed to Harmonie Park several years ago and was just recently re-instated as Paradise Valley.). “ My brother and I were in bands—Adrenalin and DC Drive—and we did that for 17 years; touring nationally, opening for Aerosmith and Bob Seger and making records for MCA and Capitol,” says Brian. “We worked with great producers like Vinnie Poncia and learned a lot. We moved into the production side with the studio doing music branding and TV spots for a lot of companies. We also worked with artists like Aretha Franklin, Dave Mason, Stewart Francke and Jill Jack.” This past May 5th and 6th saw the launch of the future of online music presentation and social media with the UDetroit Café and www.udetroit.com . “With the advent of social

Brian Pastoria

media and what we saw going on with internet radio and web TV we were super inspired seeing certain things happen in these areas,” explains Brian. “We’ve had our offices and studio in this building for a long time and always rented out the first floor to another restaurant. We thought the time had come for the idea of a media café where you had internet radio, web TV, broadcasting live and open to the public with food and drink and focusing on the Detroit music brand, which has gone really untapped over the years.” The Pastoria brothers’ philosophy was to put the spotlight on the positive things going on musically and culturally in Detroit and giving a forum to broadcast it to the world, with daily live programming and special events. “With www.udetroit.com and the UDetroit Café its brick and mortar and real people and marrying that all together,” says Brian. “The whole idea was getting people engaged with the whole social media thing that’s been happening, especially in this community where everyone is real passionate about the music.” “You get so tired of all the negative things you hear about Detroit that you wish didn’t exist,” continues Brian. “But there’s also the other side, and that’s what we’ve seen here. We are down here every day. My brother and I spend more waking hours down here than we do in our own homes. When you see and meet the people and all the creative energy and the cool things that are happening, there is another side to the story. We have our own network, our own internet radio and our own web TV. We control the message and we put out the positive stories. We’re not making this stuff up. We’re just documenting all these positive things. We’re opening our arms and embracing the positive messages that people are bringing, and they’re coming from all angles now, which is really exciting! We come from a rock ‘n roll background primarily, but our friends and people we know are from all different things— spoken word, comedy, poetry—the talent level is incredible!” The programming on www.udetroit. com is eclectic and diverse and showcases many aspects of that distinct Motor City vibe and flavor. Just a brief overview finds daily shows Monday through Friday, with the Pam Rossi Show from 11am to 1pm. Pam is a Detroit radio veteran and does the “Overeasy” program Sunday mornings on WCSX. At www.udetroit.com she kind of takes the live and unplugged concept one step further by featuring Detroit area musicians in a relaxed and more extensive setting. Another radio staple Bob Bauer, with co-host Theresa Hebert, does his talk show/live music guest program with

“Paradise Valley to Motown….The Rock Stops Here” from 2pm to 6pm. Bob did radio in Detroit for many years as a rock deejay on WWWW and brings his years of knowledge about the Detroit music scene to practice here. There are also individual nightly programs captured regularly for the UDetroit cameras like “Spoken Soul 4 U Detroit”—Mondays 8pm-10pm (spoken word/ poetry and music), “DoGgy TV w/ Damon ‘the Dog’ Perry”—Wednesdays 6pm-8pm (The Best in Detroit Sports and Music) and a host of other multi-genre music and Detroit-centric news and information shows. Another aspect of the UDetroit Café is the food and drink. It features a comprehensive menu, with, naturally, a Motown-oriented theme. Just scanning the scrumptious fare reveals items like “Raw Power” tomato soup, “Bawitdaba” nachos, a “Hitsville USA” grilled salmon sandwich and a “Maurice King and the Wolverines” grilled cheese sandwich. “Maurice King was the musical director of Motown Records,” explains Brian. “He was the guy that recorded John Lee Hooker on Hastings Street. I got to spend some time with Maurice, or ‘Mr. King’, as we used to call him and he passed away, not many people knowing what his contributions have meant to a lot of artists here. When we met Martha Reeves and a lot of the other Motown musicians like Joe Messina and Beans Bowles, they told us it was guys like Maurice King that were the Sparky Andersons to them. He taught them about life and gave them an education when they were young people. So it’s a good way to pay tribute to people like Mr. King, James Jamerson (legendary Motown session bassist, with a turkey

burger named for him), Cholly ‘Pops’ Atkins (legendary Motown choreographer, with a grilled chicken club sandwich named for him) and get people talking about them again.” The UDetroit Café also boasts an impressive array of specialty cocktails and espresso beverages, with equally compelling and amusing Motor City connections like the “Slim Shady” (Stoli Raz, Blue C, Sour, Sprite with a Grenadine Float), “Live Bullet” (Hennessy, Apple Pucker and Cranberry Juice), “Kid Rocker” (Midori, Banana Liqueur, Malibu, Pineapple and Sprite topped with Cherries) and “Brothers Groove” (Chambord, Baileys Irish Crème and Half & Half). Caffeine fanatics can indulge in a “Motown Caramel Macchiato” or an “ICP Iced Latte” if you prefer. Upcoming events include a live simulcast on WCSX HD on Saturday, August 6th, with the “Doc of Rock” Doug Podell. His guests will be Gary Quackenbush of SRC, Paul Warren (guitarist for Rod Stewart) and Detroit up and comers Core Effect doing acoustic sets on the UDetroit Café stage. Former Grand Funk guitarist/vocalist, Mark Farner, legendary British rocker, Dave Mason, producer/guitarist/ songwriter extraordinaire, Dick Wagner, and former Was Not Was and Brownsville Station guitarist/producer, Bruce Nazarian, will all be making appearances at UDetroit Café in the near future. So keep your eyes and ears open! Goo Goo Dolls: America’s Soundtrack In the summer heat, a single black balloon floated out from the stage and the crowd went wild. A few more balloons sifted into the audience as the Goo Goo Dolls started playing one of their most iconic songs, “Black Balloon”. It was 95 degrees out and the sun was finally set, relieving some of the sweltering warmth. The Goo Goo Dolls went on without a hitch, singing some of their timeless classics I’d grown up listening to such as Iris, Name, Slide, Better Days, and Broadway. I got the chance to talk to Robby Tukac, (the Goo’s bassist supporting vocalist) a few weeks before the show. He talked modestly to me about his and John Rzeznik’s journey since they started way back in 1986. “Hey, Jordan! Just to let you know, there’s a bit of a delay on this phone call so it’s gonna be a little freaky, aside from my general freakiness that is.” Robby joked. “That’s fine, I’m okay with freaky,” we laughed. “So why was the decision made to do the extended tour through the remainder of the summer?” “Well we had been touring before the album came out for several months last summer; and then it came out, and we were still touring in the UK. We came back and did a few colleges, singing our new songs, and by then it was summer again. So you just have to gauge the interest of your fans and see if you can sell some tickets and it seemed to be going pretty well, so here we are!” Robby is talking about their newest album, “Something for the Rest of Us”, that was released in August 2010. During their show at Meadow Brook Music Theatre, the Goo Goo Dolls played new music from the album. Their performances of songs “Something for the Rest of Us” and “All That You Are” were more than captivating. “All That You Are” is a single from the movie ‘Transformer’s: Dark Side of the Moon’ soundtrack. Soundtracks are something that is all too familiar for the Goo Goo Dolls. They have been featured in some of the biggest movies in the past couple decades. Their song “Iris” was the theme for the romance film ‘City of Angels’ and helped them thrust their way into endless fame. ‘Twister’, ‘Batman and Robin’, even ‘X-Games Vol. 1- Music from the Edge’,

are among the many other films and games that the Goo Goo Dolls are featured in. The movie ‘Freddy’s Dead’ even offers listeners THREE Goo Goo Dolls songs. Not only does the band’s music appear in movies, but also in the hearts of their fans. Their relatable lyrics and haunting melodies have been inspiring and uplifting people since the early 90’s. I asked, “So after about 20 years, you’ve become one of the most iconic rock bands in America due, in huge part, to the lyrics of your songs. When did you guys figure out that was going to be a vital part to your band’s success?” “I think even when Johnny and I were kids, we put a lot of thought into it you know? But back then, it was the mind of some 20 year olds, and 20 year olds that were half out of their minds at that. We loved the bands at that time we thought were very honest, (I’m not so sure now, looking back that they were) but we loved that aspect back then and it’s always been something we’ve tried to stick with.” “So I have to ask, how far did the Sex Maggots expect to make it, what was your goal in the beginning?” Robby was taken back at that old school reference and laughs for a few seconds before he answers. If you didn’t know, the Goo Goo Dolls were originally the “Sex Maggots” from Buffalo, NY. When they signed up for a gig at a local bar, the club promoter said there is no way they could go on stage with that name. The band quickly flipped through some papers and saw an ad for a toy called a ‘goo goo doll’ and the rest is rock and roll history. “Well, I think it was more of how and when we were getting to the party that night! Hoping that there’d be some girls there and that the beer held out,” he laughs again. “We weren’t thinking much in terms of goals, at that time, but it is crazy to think that all of this was born of that idea. . .” The Goo Goo Dolls roots are in Buffalo, NY and many of their lyrics, song titles, and even an album are in reference to their home town. Robby was in Buffalo when I spoke with him and he stressed how important it is for them to stay grounded to their origins. I asked, “Being that we’re based out of Detroit, what do you have to say to musicians who want to stay here and make it big then branch out further, opposed to the ones who want to head out to Nashville or LA and have a go at it, leaving this city behind? continued on 27

One thing is for certain, wherever the Goo Goo Dolls are playing, they are creating memories for all who listen. Their timeless and relatable words inspire, motivate, and captivate audiences all over the world. For over two “Well, I think that, in this day and age, decades, the Goo’s have been not only a voice of a generation, but the soundtrack to our lives. restling has always entertained fans with unique style matches such as Battle Royals, Ladder Matches, Triple Threats, and Cage Matches, but tag team wrestling has always been a classic and favorite for many years. At DL, we understand the importance of teamwork and given the fact that we have some of the best tag teams in the country performing in various venues in our local area, we decided to get up close and personal with some of them and share with our loyal readers some of what we have learned. The Bump N Uglies are more than just a wrestling tag team; they are a brand, a Rock N Roll band and a staple to our city. Hailing from Planet Detroit, the Bump N Uglies are probably most recognized for their appearance on the hit Travel Channel show, “Man vs. Food”, an episode in which the host, Adam Richman, teamed up with local celebrities including the Detroit Roller Derby Girls, Eddie Venom, Amazing N8 Mattson, Big Chuck Wagon, Gutter, Moe Dread, and many more (I apologize if I left anybody out) to take in the tough but always welcoming challenge of food. Don’t expect to have an in-depth conversation with the Bump N Uglies, as I found out when I sat down with them and was confused by the grunts and groans that seemed to follow each question that I asked. DL Magazine Editor, Darian Counts, was unwilling to pay for the NASA translator that would have allowed for a better interview, but judging from their body language, the Bump N Uglies seemed happy and excited to meet and speak with one of their biggest fans. Another premier established tag team from our region was easier to understand, but I can’t say that it made for a better interview. The embarrassment of being thrown to the concrete surface and the heinous attack on DL’s own, Ryan LaPointe, led to a spike piledriver while he was ring announcing the XICW tag team tournament, was fresh in my mind when I spoke to the Scarbonis over the telephone. Vinny and Sonny were quick to point out the many awards and titles they’ve received in their seven-year wrestling career including 2009 XICW tag team of the year, 2010 Michigan Independent tag team of the year, and various other tag team titles from local promotions, which they achieved by “any means necessary.” The Scarbonis combine grappling and “top notch” traditional wrestling, and although their skills and abilities are amongst the best, they seem to be misguided and unappreciated by the fans who continue to boo them wherever they go. When I asked Sonny about the crowd support, or lack there of, he responded, “We’re use to it, we understand that people are jealous of us and they’ll never be Sonny or Vinny”. This writer wonders if the “Where’s our pizza” chants from the crowd, is just basic heckling or an attribution to their true day job? Make sure you check out the semi-finals of the XICW tag team tournament to see them face the Bump N Uglies and I will do my best journalistic research to answer the above question. One of the crafty veteran and seasoned teams in our area remains the MCWA and TWA Tag Team Champions, and combine entertainment along with wrestling and brawling to form a style all of their own. The Brew Crew consists of 6 ‘5 Roughhouse R.O.B. and his complimenting style partner, ‘Kamikaze’ Keith Calhoun. The team plays off each other and when facing the Brew Crew, you may wind up with a punch to the kisser, followed by a face of silly-string. Keith Calhoun, a second generation wrestler, replaced original Brew Crew member Levi Blue back in the mid-90’s and continues to define what tag team wrestling is all about. When I spoke to Roughhouse R.O.B., he was quick to point out that he “didn’t do it alone” and credits “Sweet Daddy” Malcolm Monroe, Malcolm Monroe Jr. and Brian Gorie for helping with the foundation for his wrestling career. Wrestling fans have always been partial to young, energetic and charismatic freshface wrestlers, who combine top in the ring skills to create the whole package. The JCW continues to be the home of the title holding “Ring Rydas” since 2009, but the crew from Dayton, Ohio has been down with the ICP and the Juggalo lifestyle since 1997. When I spoke to the “Ring Rydas”, they were quick to express their appreciation to all their fans

and particularly to the Juggalos who have supported start. “It’s great to relive our childhood and to be able give back some of the love that we get”, explained one of masked members of the Ring Rydas while his partner wanted to tell their fans to “stay down, stay true and support the cause,” a message that describes who and what the Ring Rydas are all about.

them from the to

An unorthodox but sometimes successful approach to tag team wrestling can be achieved by piecing together wrestlers who have been effective in singles competition, and look for a partner who can help compliment them. An example of this is JCW’s own, “Mad Man” Pondo and Necro Butcher, who are both legends in the hardcore style and love to dish out pain together, as they have on each other for many years. “Creating a perfect mold is important, and some teams come together naturally”, says Gideon Malice, who with his partner Austin Manix have formed an up and coming force to be reckoned with. Occasionally, teams with little in common are put together for the entertainment of the fans and none are more ‘Rock and Sock’ than XICW’s hardcore champ, Ian Decay (and sometimes his twin brother Ziggy Stardust) and his partner, the flamboyant “Sweet” Willy Watts. Be sure to come down to a live show to support your favorite tag team!

WARPED TOUR 2011

This year’s Warped Tour was, without a doubt, an unforgettable experience for both the bands and the fans that rocked out at the Detroit stop. With a 60 band line-up spread out over a total of 7 stages, there were tons of bands to be seen throughout the day. Although many of the traditional Warped Tour veterans weren’t on this year’s bill, Less Than Jake and Simple Plan returned this time around accompanied by first timers A Day to Remember, Asking Alexandria, August Burns Red, D.R.U.G.S., Miss May I, Of Mice and Men, The Devil Wears Prada, and We Came as Romans. As I arrived at Comerica Park, local favorites Group Therapy were setting up to play at the Ernie Ball Stage, their prize for winning the Detroit round of this year’s Battle of the Bands contest. After their set, I spoke with their vocalist, Ryan Logan, who seemed very honored and humbled that Group Therapy was able to play this year. “For us, playing Warped Tour was like the triumphant closing scene of an 80’s film, like Teen Wolf or something… We won, epic 80’s jam, roll credits!!” Shortly after seeing Group Therapy, I got the chance to sit down with Neil Westfall from A Day to Remember just before their set to discuss Warped Tour, future plans, and the recent rapid success of ADTR. When I asked Neil how he felt about being a part of Warped this year and ADTR blowing up so quickly, he happily stated, “It’s surreal. We never expected it, but always just kind of hoped it would happen. We’re just young kids from a small town in Florida; to be able to come out and play the music that we like and have people respond to it, is one of the greatest feelings we could have as musicians.” He went on to mention that ADTR definitely has post-tour plans to take a break for a minute to write some more and relax, then hopefully to jump back on tour and make some international stops like Japan. After the interview, I hung around the main stage to see their set and I was honestly overwhelmed at how many people were in the crowd. Hundreds of people gathered around and the majority of them sang with the band during the chorus of their song “If It Means A lot To You”. The energy from both the band and the crowd was amazing. After seeing A Day to Remember, while

I was heading to do an interview with We Came as Romans, I stopped by a small crowded stage to see a comedy punk band, Green Jellÿ, who actually weren’t announced on the website as part of this year’s line-up. From start to finish, the band put on an insane set, adorning themselves and the audience with their foam costumes. At one point, I was brought on stage to do what the band calls “The Cone of Silence”, where they placed a dunce cone on my head and asked the audience to guess my age. The best part about their set was their costume mosh pit, where they asked random people from the crowd to put on their costumes and mosh to their songs. I never once thought that I would see Toucan Sam moshing alongside a giant rabbit and Fred Flintstone in my life, but thanks to Green Jellÿ, I did. Although the band has made it well known that they originally formed in order to start “The World’s Worst Band”, they still put on one of the greatest live shows that I’ve ever seen. After Green Jellÿ’s set, I had the opportunity to speak with local Warped Tourers, We Came as Romans, who shared the bill with ADTR just a few months ago in Royal Oak at two back-to-back sold out shows for

Extravaganja Bradley R. Savino

I hope everyone is prepared because the 2nd annual Extravaganja is here! On the 20th and 21st of August, Big Daddy’s Hydro will descend upon the Eastern Michigan Fairgrounds in Imlay City and deliver an MMJ event rivaled by none. The colossal property is well-known for hosting some of the largest and bad-ass events eastern Michigan has to offer, including the Eastern Michigan Fair. Attendees will be permitted full use of the grounds which are very well manicured and maintained, with space virtually unlimited. The main area will be outdoors in a gigantic field of lush green grass; this isn’t the middle of nowhere, it’s a beautiful, timeless piece of Michigan. Six large buildings surround the gathering area providing indoor amenities and a place to beat the heat if it ends up being a scorcher. Plenty of shade and practical space will be available to throw down a blanket or set up some chairs to lounge around and picnic, socialize or relax.

These guys are really cranking up the compassion this year and have not spared a single detail to make sure this event is friendly to ANYONE interested in attending. Security and volunteer helpers will be on hand to direct and assist guests, and everything is handicapped accessible. Golf cart shuttling will also be available to ferry guests from one area to the next or from one end to the other. The community and the people in the area are very compassionate and understanding of this event, so no worries about being hassled for your attendance.

the Gamechangers tour, and now, playing the Advent stage alongside bands like Miss May I and Of Mice and Men. WCAR received tons of local support at Warped Tour, bringing in one of the biggest crowds of the day, despite playing at the same time as August Burns Red. I spoke with guitarist Joshua Moore, who gladly promoted their long overdue new album, “Understanding What We’ve Grown to Be”, which comes out on September 13th. Their new single “Misunderstanding” is currently #3 on the rock singles charts on iTunes. The band also announced that they have more tour plans with Miss May I and Of Mice and Men in the near future as part of the “I’m Alive Tour”. All in all, this year’s Warped Tour definitely lived up to Warped Tour standards, despite the shift in line-up from most years. Fans still piled into giant crowds, did the wall of death, walked around advertising Free Hugs, and did meet & greets with bands like Simple Plan and Of Mice and Men. Surely, everyone went home with sunburnt smiles on their faces.

outdoor vendors will be present selling sweet merch, clothing, marijuana swag, glass, accessories, unique gifts and much, much more. Food vendors will also set-up shop. Any vendors interested in a space are strongly urged to inquire, considering booths are $100 for both days and RV or trailer parking is available! Those rates are unheard of, and a prime example of where the heart of this event is at. Big Daddy’s is striving to make this event as affordable and accommodating as possible. The most important part is people helping people. This gathering is Compassion Club Friendly, and special rates will be available to those who inquire.

Let’s get to the meat of this beast, shall we? Fairly-priced certifications will be available by unobtrusive, medical professionals. Expect to be treated and respected as the patient you are in a friendly, welcoming setting. Medication areas will be available for patients to mingle, network and medicate. The real value of events like these are the potential to get outside of yourself or your lifestyle and meet like-minded individuals. There is nothing in this world that can provide the same experience as being face-to-face with another person who understands your condition and truly cares about you. The overall vibe is literally palpable, the energy buzzing in the air. It’s like going to a party and you immediately like everyone you meet. When does that ever happen? Live glass blowing demonstrations will occur throughout the day, as well as chain saw carvings and professional speakers. Great opportunity exists here to come and clear up what’s true and what’s not, considering marijuana laws, reform and legalities. These speakers can cut through the misinformation that floats around so freely these days and help make sure you are operating within your guidelines, informed of your rights and updated on the movement. A unique and intriguing variety of many indoor and For more info - see ad on opposing page

Many other causes and political groups will be there so that attendees have the chance to participate in and learn more about the future of this state. Among these will be petitions concerning Rick Snyder and petitions to add specific ailments to the list of accepted conditions that permit the use of marijuana as a holistic treatment. The extremely popular horseshoe tournament will be held again this year, providing all of you competitive types with a light-hearted game of shoes to celebrate the day and meet some cool new people. Saturday night, 420 friendly, camping sites will be available. Adults only please no children. You must be a patient to enter the campsite. Vendor set-up will be on Friday, the day before the event, which means Friday will be a vendor only camping night. The major difference from last year is admission is FREE. Yes, I said free. Parking, yep that’s going to be free too. All ages are welcome to this family friendly event. Of course, Detroit Live Magazine will be there, as well as a local radio station and 4M (Michigan Medical Marijuana Magazine). What could possibly hold you back from attending an event of this magnitude? The bottom line, when all is said and done, is when the campfires burn low and the whirlwind of personal enjoyment and camaraderie settle, there will be lasting relationships built. Leave with a great new network of people and resources and carry back with you the mind set of a positive, constructive medical community. Bring the joy of living free and easy to your life and join the thousands of patients who are striving to project a positive image to the rest of the country.
