work of creating a band that accentuates each of the member’s musical style and strengths as well as produces a credible and viable product would require hard work, flexibility and creativity. First attempts at collaborations of new material proved more challenging than The new band was based on the electronic song expected. After hearing some of the bands initial tracks, says lead vocalist Renee Miller, writing and experimentation of Mike “Sonic” “My first thoughts were; how am I going to Glaser and Andrew “Ginseng” Lemanek. Yet write words to this? It was structurally different while the two had a long history of working to what I was accustomed to. I did my best to together they realized that if they were to go “live” and perform in the way they desired, they create melodies and help the band structure It started in 2003 when then self proclaimed the songs.” Like most bands, over time band “super fan” of the group “Love Machine Blue”, would need more than synthesizers, keyboards & gadgets. The addition of Willy D and Classy Lee members began to understand each others Renee Miller was at a LMB show enjoying her allowed the full band to begin to take shape. The strengths and talents and eventually the new favorite band. In passing the band mentioned addition of a strong rhythm section and a beauty batch of original music began to take shape. they were starting a new project and These new melodies had the distinction of considering a female vocalist. Not being one to with a voice is always a winning choice. being written with Renee’s vocal style in mind. let a potential opportunity pass her by, Renee The new songs were definitely something Granted, once all members were in place the decided to audition. Even if Renee wasn’t an Renee and the rest of the band could wrap their brains around and Otto Vector came alive. For Ten years Otto Vector has been creating their own brand of techno - electronic - pop – modern music throughout the State of Michigan. Uninfluenced by the pressures of mainstream radio or the musical flavor of the month these 4 guys and 1 girl have literally and unapologetically danced to their own tune for over a decade. And now people not only in Michigan but all over the country are taking notice.

incredible singer, (which she is) I tend to think she would have gotten the gig based upon energy and confidence alone. Her hypnotic vocal stylings drove the point home and she quickly became the vocalist for the new group.

Fast forward hundreds of shows and 5 CD‘s . In a decade, as you can imagine they’ve had their ups and down. Through working, playing, fighting and writing, their style has grown and developed into something previously imaginable, yet always remaining true to their electronic roots. What is their Style? Ok, so we’ve mentioned that OV embraces both the pop and techno aspects of their Detroit roots, but to just say “techno / electronica” doesn’t really convey what this band is all about. It’s more of a convergence of techno, pop, rock combined with a nod to the sounds of classic video games. Yes...I said video games. And were not talking Grand Theft Auto or Call of Duty style games....We’re talking the style of Mario Bros. and the classics. Many Otto Vector songs, while containing powerful & melodic 6 LIVE - DETROITLIVEMAGAZINE.COM

vocals, heavy guitars and mesmerizing electronic under and overtones are peppered with beeps, blips and bloops, reminiscent of a long night of Donkey Kong. By combining all these factors, with the obvious technical savant like talent and knowledge of Mike Sonic and Ginseng, the powerful rhythm section of Willy D and Classy Lee and the enchantingly hypnotic vocals and song writing of Renee, the true source of Otto Vector’s magic become apparent. Since 2003 the band has released 5 albums, played shows from New York to Detroit to L. A and many places in between. Leaving throngs of Otto Vector Fans in their wake. In addition to the live shows and multiple albums it’s not uncommon to hear the bands music on MTV’s Real World / Road Rules challenge and was also featured on the soundtrack to the 2004 movie “Feed”. While some bands take the “We’ll play anytime anywhere” approach, OV has chosen to ration their live performances. Preferring to make strategic appearances that support the value and mystique of the band. One such rare performance is September 27th for their CD Release party at the Magic Bag. An impressive feature of this band is their tenacious and subtly high brow approach to marketing. Earlier this year the band submitted their new CD to the L.A. Based “Indie Music

The event organizer claimed that once the judges reviewed Otto Vectors material they believed there was a very high likelihood that the award for Best new band of the year was going to be awarded to Otto Vector. They were invited to L.A. to not only attend the Awards show but to perform at the prestigious House of Blues. Their trip to the west coast turned out to be a fruitful one. They were presented with the Indie Music Channel award for Best Pop Band of the Year, Best Pop Video and Band of the Year!

With an substantial electronic presence Otto Vectors live performances can be hypnotically spot on. After 10 years

together their technical skills are polished and their ability to read and anticipate each other is at its peak. As well as they’ve done with their recent CD and their live performances there is still one area left for Otto Vector to master, Video’s. A quick click on the videos tab at ottovector.com will reveal videos for their songs Bright side, Charlie Mix, Better Left Unsaid. The professionally produced videos, combined with the 5 CD’s, numerous live performances and a work ethic that reflects their motor city roots reveals the level of commitment this band has to perfection in all aspects of their craft. Otto Vector is truly an innovative and talented band who’s not afraid to blaze their own trail. We look forward to watching their star rise. Be sure and check out Otto Vector at their CD release party at the Magic Bag on Sept. 27th

KottonMouth Kings and The Dirtyheads. DL: What have been some of the most difficult obstacles to overcome?

Talks with Detroit Live

JF: I’ve had many difficult times with joining and starting bands. I’ve tried to start bands but no one I have found shared my commitment , Solo music is fun to perform anyway. By far my most difficult obstacle was losing my dad at 14. It was rough finding him passed, that led me to deeper music and a new approach to my type of writing. One of the most exciting obstacles I’ve overcome was performing on national television for “MyTv20 Network’s talent search Shame Or Fame” in 2011. I took second place that season.

JF: As of right now I’ll be performing on August 10th at the Detroit Live Magazine / Goomba Music’s Summertime Showcase, in Taylor, MI. At 12900 Beech Daly at the Perfect Pitcher. It’s going to be a good night, I’m looking forward to performing with some great bands and meeting some of the guys from Goomba Music..

DL: Tell us about some of your favorite venues to perform at and about some of your best gigs. JF: My favorite venue to perform in is St. Andrews Hall. I did a talent competition there recently with guest celebrity judges Damon Eden (from Epic Records), Sandy Lal (from Universal Music Groups), who is a real nice guy. He liked my music and told me to keep doing what I’m doing and I’ll go far. I also enjoyed performing at the Broadway Theatre/Cafe in Detroit, great crowds there, DL: Have you collaborated with any local or national acts? JF: I have done shows with many local and DL: How did you get your start in music? national acts. Some of my favorites were opening up for Sebastian Bach of Skid Row JF: I started off looking through early Detroit Live Magazines, And seeing all the venues to perform and at at the Emerald Theatre in Mount Clemens, MI, where I the huge music scene, Detroit has to offer. I picked up my cousin Wes’s guitar around the age of 10 got to hangout with Bach and his guitarist backstage and and just started covering Guns ‘N’ Roses songs and at the time I was already writing my own lyrics for songs, play a little bit of his song, so I just put the two together and started booking small “I Remember you” on my Estaban acoustic guitar which bar gigs and little parties, then moved larger and larger shows at various concert theaters, night they used later during the show for that song clubs, and bigger venues that I would see in DLM. because someone had stolen his acoustic at a previous gig. DL: What city originally are you from? I’ve opened up for former Guns N’ Roses guitarist, Tracii Gun’s band Faster JF: I am originally from Taylor, MI but I’ve lived in Pussycat at The I-Rock Monroe, Flatrock, Woodhaven & Hale where I got to hangout with JTX and Michigan’s own Uncle Kracker, nightclub in Detroit, and another fun show I during a small bar gig on the 4th of July, not far from his cabin. They are very nice people and actually asked performed there was opening me to come with him to his following show in Traverse up for the MC5 lead guitarist City. But right now I am living back in Taylor, which is Wayne Kramer. I’ve opened a nice area to perform and live, being that its not that far for Kill Devil Hill with Rex Brown of Pantera on bass. from Detroit. When I have shows to play downtown. Vinnie Appice from Dio and Black Sabbath on drums, and DL: Who were some of your early influences? Mark Zavon from W.A.S.P. on guitar. From national bands to locals like Pistol JF: My earliest influence was Pink Floyd then I got Day Parade.. into Guns N’ Roses which was and still is my favorite band. But right now I’m into more mellower music like DL: Where can people see Sublime and Ko Kapches. But I always go back to the you perform this summer good stuff like The Doors, Guns’N’Roses, Led Zeppelin and where can they purchase and even grunge stuff like Silverchair, Candlebox and your music? early Pearl Jam sometimes I jam crazy chill stuff like 8 LIVE - DETROITLIVEMAGAZINE.COM

Detroit Bass Players By Eric Harabadian

Kern Brantley is a Detroit bass player in good standing who was initially drawn to the DBP site by the camaraderie he observed. Coming from a family of 10 kids, everyone learned to play an instrument. He first rose to prominence as a church musician. His resume reads like a who’s who of modern gospel, pop and R&B music. One of his first breaks came through Minister Thomas Whitfield. He introduced Brantley to Marvin Winans and The Clark Sisters. He also studied with Funk Brother Earl Van Dyke early on. Travelling back and forth between New York and Detroit, Brantley has worked with Alexander Zonjic, Grover Washington, Jr., Mary J. Blige, Puff “I am the founding member of Daddy, Bad Boy Records, Will Smith, LL Detroit Bass Players,” says Craig Skoney. Recently we gathered some of Cool J., R. After being away for some 30 years, he moved back to Detroit and reconnected with Reginald Canty at a local music event a few years ago. You feel it in your gut. Combined with the drums, it’s the impetus that gets you to move. It’s those rich and low register frequencies that often hit your ear before the rest of the music does. It all is derived from the bass. And whether you’re in the audience or jamming alongside on stage, there is not a finer live music experience than when the bass player is grooving in the pocket of the music and the melody, feel and beat all come together as one. No doubt these are the kinds of things discussed between bass players of all persuasions via the Detroit Bass Players Facebook page.

“I was ill for a few years and just got back into playing about four years ago,” kicks off Canty in our discussion. “And that’s when I discovered Detroit Bass Players. It gave me a lot of momentum and a reason to come back down here (in the Bass Mint) and start practicing. It’s been a big blessing but I never dreamed it would get to where it is now.” Canty’s resume includes work in a Las Vegas revue and 18 months on the road with Diana Ross. “I’ve never seen anything like this before; a bunch of musicians in the same locale that are supportive of each other,” he continues.

“I was online seeing what was going on with the music scene and found the Detroit Bass Players page,” explains Williams. “I kept seeing the list grow from 200 members to 300, then 400. Along with Canty, the list includes Parker Klein, Roger Noonan, Eddie Kohen, Larry Lee and Mike Rich. “Other cities have tried to do what we’ve done and they can’t do it,” says Skoney. “Somehow we’ve been able to overcome the roadblocks. The heart of this is beating strong. For the most part Detroit Bass Players includes all skill levels, age groups and races—it doesn’t matter and it’s a brotherhood.”

YEAH YEAH YEAHS YES YES YES!

Article by Julia Sikora Photo by Marc Nader

The curtain that fell from the rafters of The Fillmore read YYY, and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs took the stage to the excited screams of their adoring fans. Unfamiliar with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs myself, I’ll admit I was a bit skeptical of the hype, but I can tell you now that Karen O has made a believer out of me. Most lead singers exude an untouchable, larger-than-life quality, but O brings to mind your favorite crazy aunt at a family reunion - exploding with energy and having the time of her life. Literally a fascinating creature – she took the stage in insectile attire and bug-eye glasses – it was clear she was happy to be there and even happier that the crowd had showed up to enjoy the night with her. Kicking off the festivities with “Mosquito,” the first track off the band’s 2013 release of the same name, O crooned, wailed, jumped, and swung her microphone through each and every song. The night’s set list continued on with early YYY material, including “Man,” “Black Tongue” and “Cheated Hearts,” during which O walked across the front of the stage, holding out the microphone and inviting fans to sing the ‘oo oo oos’ of the song’s bridge. And of course, the radio-friendly hits “Zero” and “Heads Will Roll” made the cut for the night’s show. Standout songs included my personal favorite “Gold Lion,” with its, sing-song punk vocals, and “Despair,” a new track that manages to be light and soul-bearing all at once. Halfway through the show, things slowed down a bit as O walked over to bassist and keyboardist David Pajo to sing “Subway” in the back corner of the stage. An out-ofthe-ordinary move for most singers, but like everything else about Karen O, it worked. Coming onstage for their encore, the band dedicated their beloved first single “Maps” to bassist David Pajo’s mother, who had come out to hear him play. O’s voice, pure and strong, moved through the crowd and made you feel as if she was singing just for you. Out of the quiet ballad, O reared up to bring the house – and her microphone – down with “Tick.” Short, sweet, and shrill, it left me wanting more, which is the true allure of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. They light up the stage with infectious talent and energy that is missed the moment it is gone. I say Yes Yes Yes to hoping they find their way back to Detroit soon.

Grace Potter - Heats Up Detroit Review and Photos by Marc Nader

Grace Potter & The Nocturnals have been making their way up the ladder and destined for the top. Grace is the total package; a singer/ songwriter/musician just scratches the surface of her talent. Performing on Dave Matthews 2013 Summer Tour, Potter is gaining ground on her success one city at a time. As I walked into DTE Energy Music Theatre last night I ran into a few friends who knew nothing about Grace Potter and The Nocturnals. Well each and everyone became a fan before she ended her set with one of my favorites “Paris.” Her high energy performances and infectious songs are going to be the key to her success. Grace Potter Rocks, get out and see the music this is a must see show! 18 LIVE - DETROITLIVEMAGAZINE.COM

“And There Off” Article By Don Cee, Photos by Marc Nader Straight out of the gate the very first Faster Horses Festival went off like a derby race. Fans of all ages ascended on to the grounds of the Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn MI like wild fire. The anticipation was so high surrounding campgrounds started to fill 24 hours before this threeday country music event even started. As I arrived on Friday, camper in tow, you could not help feeling the positive energy through out the campgrounds. As I set up camp I quickly made friends with my already partying neighbors creating a perfect setting that made my little rented strip of grass feel like home. Camper secure and a quick camp shower I was ready to see if the excitement outside was just as good inside. Entering the festival grounds it just felt like a traveling show set up shop in the first open country they came too. Vending booths, special attractions, a towering swing ride and a Giant water slide were spread through out the rolling hill. Country fans roamed around as if it was their own hometown yearly festival. Gracing the grounds an enormous

Although the acts ended before the rain, Mother Nature would have the last word on day one. Strong winds, lightning and heavy rain blew through the grounds that night causing a bit of discomfort for tent camping die hards. As I watched through my trailer windows some of the nylon bubbles housing weary campers were no match for this front. Wet and tired fans made the best of the night taking refuge in their cars ending day one by the dashboard lights. The morning of day two began with a beautiful sunrise and the vibe started all over again. People where fixing up their sites, making breakfast and getting ready for a packed full day of some of country’s biggest hitters. Featuring Brett Eldredge, Drake White, Colt Ford, Florida Georgia Line, Thompson Square and Luke Bryan day two was nothing but a country music smorgasbord. As the cool night air settled in and the show ended inside, outside at all the campgrounds the party was just getting going. A huge bon fire near the main entrance with live music went on well into the night as well as multiple camp parties. Decorated sites and mini camp fires light up the sky over the grounds as festival goers stirred up love and laughter making day 2 the most memorable. KEM Day three, the last and final day of this inaugural fest started out a little slow. Recouping from the night festivities, festivalgoers took a little longer to fill up the grounds. By the time Greg Bates took the stage partiers had shaken off the hurt and were ready like a Sunday morning Bloody Mary. Beside Mr. Bates country big dogs like Chase Rice, Jerrod Niemann, Thomas Rhett and Jason Aldean took the festival home with a big southern punch. This event, with its Woodstock like feel, was in my opinion one of the best shows I’ve covered this year and I am stoked to say I have reserved my accommodations for next years 2014 Faster Horses Festival! I have rock in my blood but after this one I have country in my heart!

Dave Mathews Band Photo & Review By Marc nader All you have to say is Dave Matthews is coming to town and ticket sales go through the roof here in Michigan. Time and time and again DMB plays in front of a sold out crowd; last night at DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston was no different. Fans of all ages filled the venue to its capacity looking to see and hear one of the greatest singer/songwriters of our time. So far this summer, outside concerts in Michigan have taken a beating since Mother Nature loves to rain on our parade almost daily. Dave apologized for the rain and thanked those whom had bought tickets to sit in it. Well, as luck would have it Mother Nature must also be a fan of DMB because by the time they started the show the water shut off giving the fans on a hill some relief to enjoy the performance.

Dave Matthews gave the fans exactly what they came for, playing a selection of his greatest like “When The World Ends,” “Belly Belly Nice,” “If Only,” “Crush,” “Fool to Think,” “The Song That Jane Likes” and “Jimi Thing” to name a few. Throwing in a few covers like Bob Marley’s ‘Stir It Up,” Blue Oyster Cult’s “The Reaper” and John Denver’s “Take Me Tomorrow” added a little more spice to an already fantastic show. Ending the night with “Ants Marching” filled the summer air with the crowd singing and dancing, leaving musical memories of yet another great Dave Matthews Band performance!

DETROIT LIVE EVENTS

Over The last 5 years Detroit Live Magazine has watched some of Detroit’s best artists achieve their musical goals. Bands like Pistol Day Parade, Kaleido, Otto Vector Fall Prey and many more have worked hard to write incredible songs, develop their live show and build their fan base. In that time period Detroit Live Magazine has worked hard to help them in every way we could. We’ve written stories, featured them in the magazine as well as on the cover and most importantly sponsored live events so that fans can not only experience the music of these great artists but feel their passion as well. Along the way we’ve come to appreciate the value of hi profile events. Events give the community a focal point. A physical place where people can share common interests. This fall Detroit Live will be hosting a variety of events at clubs and live venues who advertise with us. From our wildly successful tribute shows and our upcoming 5 year anniversary blowout to our Halloween and Christmas charity shows, Detroit Live

Magazine is packing our advertisers establishments as well as giving some of Detroit’s best bands the publicity they deserve.

If you’d like to host a Detroit Live Magazine event, the process is simple. Call 734-775-9991 and talk with Darian Counts or email darian@detroitlivemagazine. com. Darian will help you design your advertisement and plan your upcoming event. Also, for businesses where there is no option to host an event, Detroit Live offers sponsorship packages that can make your business the prime sponsor of events all over town. This is a great way for medium sized businesses like car dealerships, music stores and product manufacturers to keep their name in front of music fans and get face to face with new potential customers all the while having Detroit Live Magazine sing the praises of your business.

Eric Harbadians Choice Cuts August 2013 The Dutch Woodstock, The Dutch Woodstock (CD/DVD Gonzo Multimedia, GZ0102CD): 2009 marked the 40th anniversary of one of the largest and most famous music festivals of all time that took place on Max Yasgur’s farm near Woodstock, New York in the summer of ‘69. It was, undoubtedly, a watershed moment for music and modern culture for generations to come. Well, a year later in 1970 Europe followed suit with a similar three-day music fest called “Holland Pop.” It was The Netherlands answer to what the U.S. had started, but with a decidedly more alternative and underground twist. This three disc set features two CDs worth of audio performances from some of the same artists that played at the original Woodstock like Country Joe McDonald, Jefferson Airplane and Santana. But there are so many other great acts on this compilation that deem this a special event in its own right. The DVD that’s included showcases and consolidates performances from the audio discs featuring rare footage of Pink Floyd, The Byrds, Dr. John, Canned Heat, Family, Marc Bolan & T. Rex and others. The psychedelic camera angles and effects, festival goers’ hi-jinx and excellent camera close ups and stage shots make this an incredible document for those into classic rock history and beyond.

Awesome Jarvis & The Whales, Worse Things Have Happened (Funky D Records FD009): What’s in a name? There is no one in this band named Jarvis and as far as “whales” are concerned, nothing nautical comes to mind. But upon first listen it is immediately apparent that they are, indeed, “awesome!” This Detroit area quintet kind of defies description. They certainly rock, as the opening track “Still Life” displays. Lead vocalist Chris Tomko bursts out of the gate with a ferocity that seems to blend stream of conscious poetry with the manic delivery of Henry Rollins. Title cut “Worse Things Have Happened” delves into vintage guitar tones and film noir-ish imagery. “A Taste for the Tragic” suggests elements of psychedelia, with dark lyrical undertones and a prog rock sensibility. For good reason, one of the tracks that really registers is the closer “Shake Your Ass for the People.” It’s a funky free-for-all that adds some bluesy harmonica, clever thematic detours and killer lead guitar from Ben Kay. This is an interesting band that will appeal to the listener on multiple levels. ### 24 LIVE - DETROITLIVEMAGAZINE.COM

The Sword, Apocryphon (Razor & Tie 7930183356-2): The modern hard rock Austin, Texas outfit celebrates their fourth release (and first for Razor & Tie) with a concept album based on secret writings and religious heretics. This band has been building a buzz on the indie music scene for a while now and their latest confirms what the fuss has been all about. Lead vocalist and guitarist John D. Cronise has a decidedly young Ozzy Osbourne quality to his voice and his teaming with guitarist Kyle Shutt strongly suggests a classic Black Sabbath sound. Comparisons could also be made to early NYC proto-metallists Sir Lord Baltimore. But The Sword has cut their own path through the modern rock screamers and bombast by delivering a record that is, indeed, heavy but engrossingly warm and melodic as well. The riffs are thick and crunchy, yet engagingly clean. And the rhythm section of bassist Bryan Richie and drummer Santiago Vela III keeps the tunes flowing with a driving, lyrical ease. While many bands often pummel the listener into vulgar submission, Cronise has loftier goals for his group: “Music is supposed to transport people somewhere away from their daily lives. (With Apocryphon) I’d like it if listeners think a little bit more about life, their existence and their place in the universe while taking this trip.” Enjoy the ride! Will Lee, Love, Gratitude and Other Distractions (Sinning Saint, Ltd. SSLO17): You may not know it but you’ve been watching and listening to bassist/vocalist Will Lee’s playing on TV for decades. He’s been part of the house band for “Late Show with David Letterman” since the early ‘80s on NBC and since the early ‘90s when the talk show host made the leap to CBS. You’ve probably heard him on the radio and recordings too because he’s got a session man resume a couple miles long. So, when you’ve, virtually, played with everyone and you’re about to embark on your second solo album (his first solo record Oh! came out in 1993) you make some calls and get your friends to drop by the studio to cut a track or two. And that’s essentially what happened. For the opening number “Gratitude,” a kind of Steely Dan-ish pop/funk piece, his fellow television compadre Paul Shaffer gets down on organ. That’s followed by the soulful vocal pairing of Lee and ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons on the classic R&B nugget “Get Out of My Life Woman.” There are also guest appearances here from keyboardist Bob James, the late Chrissy Amphlett of the Divinyls and guitarist Steve Lukather of Toto. But the takeaway here is that, at the end of the day, Lee is, unquestionably, one of the finest support players on the planet. And with his latest solo release he proves to be a consummate leader, songwriter and artist in his own right as well.

The Lewiston Lodge I recently had the pleasure of a weekend stay at the Lewiston Lodge on East Twin Lake in Lewiston Michigan. The Lewiston Lodge is a lake side hotel and restaurant owned by Tim and Shannon LaPointe. It was originally constructed in the early 1900’s as a private resort. In 1992 The LaPointes purchased the business and began making much needed updates and improvements. Tim LaPointe’s extensive background in hospitality and the food service industry became clear as one of his first decisions was to employ the services of some of the countries best chefs to create a menu that is definitely worth making the up north trip for. While many locals have become accustomed to 5 star cuisine coming from the kitchen of the lodge, it always seems to catch tourists off guard when the get a taste of the lodge’s food. As we devoured our perfectly prepared meals it was obvious that we weren’t the only ones impressed by such delicious entrées. A quick conversation with Tim and Shannon LaPointe reveals that this is a labor of love for them. And while they cherish the history of the almost 100 year old establishment they also have gone to great lengths to update and modernize every aspect of the Lodge. Thru renovations and modernization, passion and hard work the LaPointes have turned the Lewiston Lodge into one of the most enjoyable and relaxing destinations in the Lewiston / Gaylord area. Its close proximity to outdoor attractions like canoeing, horseback riding and the Garland Golf resort make the hotel / restaurant a fantastic and affordable destination for a quick weekend getaway for the whole family. The hotel offers clean, modern, affordable priced rooms or suites complete with wifi. If you are seeking a great weekend getaway with the family or just looking for a place to hang your hat on the way to Traverse City, Mackinaw or the UP; the Lewiston Lodge is the place. Oh... and when you get there order up a plate of their world famous hot wings, one wing alone is worth the drive. Enjoy!

How does Detroit’s new rock alternative radio station celebrate its birthday? With two days at two iconic venues with EIGHT bands! 89X knows how to put a good party together to say the least. Two days of head banging music provided by both bands that have been with 89x near its beginning in the 90s and some more recent chart toppers all in spirit of keeping the new rock alternative alive and well, making 89X an all-around seasoned pro of broadcast. The first night at The Fillmore showcased newer rock that has been inspiring the adolescent youth to start sporting Mohawk hair-do’s much more than ever before. I must have seen at least 15 kids under 15 with multi colored hair and Mohawks. That’s how you know you are at a good rock show; the kids are just as into the music and culture as the adults! (With a little help from mom, I’m sure) I’ll never forget the group of 4 little boys moshing while Escape the Fate was onstage. Not many bands have both 13 and 30 year olds moshing at the same time...that was awesome! I was especially impressed with Middle Class Rut, having never heard them before that night, there music is hard, straight-forward, and heavily melodic. I’m now a fan and picked up there CD at the merch tables. Hollywood Undead closed out the first night of celebration and before they came onstage, Jay Hudson from 89X introduced them, then lost his balance on a stage prop and “falling with style” into the press pit. His hands came into the air signaling he was fine and everyone had a good laugh about it. Phil Kukawinski of “PK On-Air” on 89X also got in on the fun by crowd surfing and the fans were having a blast! Hollywood undead came onstage with masks and attitudes ready to make everyone jump and laugh with their unique blend of alternative rock and hip hop. The Fillmore went wild singing along to crowd favorite “Bullet” then they followed with MY favorite song of theirs, “Up In Smoke”. The following night I ventured a little north to DTE Energy Music Theatre where 89X had invited us to a second celebration including Iamdynamite, Cypress Hill, G. Love & Special Sauce, and 311. It was hot out there but the cool sounds of G. Love and his “Special Sauce” band were refreshing 26 LIVE - DETROITLIVEMAGAZINE.COM

and I was getting so lost in the upright bass solo and dueling harmonicas that the humidity was the last thing on my mind. That’s right, dueling harmonicas! After hydrating, I found some old friends on the hill and posted up just in time for Cypress Hill to take their turn celebrating the Birthday of 89X with us in what seemed to be a huge cloud of smoke that formed above DTE and remained there in perfect Cypress hill style through the set of classics like “Hits from the Bong”, “The Phuncky Feel One”, and “Boom Biddy Bye Bye” among others ending with a little ode to 89X themselves as the “Rock Superstars” they are and have been for years.

To finish up the Birthday Bash, 311 came with a new show for the fully packed amphitheater including a rare B-Side “Sun Come Through”, with three new tunes from the latest CD ‘Universal Pulse’, and a percussion solo where every member of the band lined up onstage with their own drums, performing one of the most impressive percussive displays of musicianship to ever grace that stage. After 14 songs were performed including the drum spectacular, P-Nut shared an amazing bass solo full of tapping, slapping, popping, sliding, and goodness. I love when he does that. They followed his solo with my favorites “Beautiful Disaster” and “Don’t Stay Home” and played a few more. The show was over and they didn’t play Amber?? Just kidding, they came back for an encore of fans screaming “THREE-ELEVEN, THREE THREE ELEVEN” and wrapped up the bash with two that everyone knew, “Amber” and “Creatures (For a While)” and no one wanted to stop dancing! This was by far the best birthday party I’ve ever been to! Two nights full of friendly faces, non-stop music, and good times. The 89X crew was everywhere during both shows giving away swag and socializing with listeners who are now able to put faces to the voices they hear on the radio all day and night. From mosh pit metal by Escape the Fate to the “pass it around” Hip Hop of Cypress Hill… These two days perfectly sums up the “New Rock Alternative” style on which 89X has thrived for over 20 years. Here’s to another 20! Hat’s off! DETROITLIVEMAGAZINE.COM - LIVE 27

Mayhem Festival Brings Metal Madness Article by Jonny Reinhardt, Photos by Marc Nader

What a semi-perfect day for MAYHEM! The clouds in the sky were threatening

of storms but the thunder that day was purely brought by double bass drums. Mayhem Fest was in full tailgating swing when I arrived in the morning at DTE energy Music Theater. Every other car was blaring Five Finger Death Punch, Rob Zombie, or some other loud metal to pump them up for the coming 12 hours of head banging bliss. The smell of Barbecue and ganja was in the air only building anticipation with the hundreds of metalheads in line to get their ticket to selfexpression for the afternoon. I whizzed by the eternally long lines to the back of the amphitheater to set up shop for my interviews with BATTLECROSS, Attika 7, Children of Bodom, Butcher Babies, Emmure, Huntress and Job for a Cowboy. That mix of metal genres will please every head banger and satisfy any ones taste for heavy metal. So it begins my exclusive behind the scenes view of the work and dedication that

goes into a day and life of large productions of this caliber. Whole fleets of people for each band turning knobs and wrenches alike, making sure everything is perfect. I kind of got myself lost in the backstage workings of DTE walking slowly behind the scenes where so many legends have been before… thinking of all the Rockstars that have walked the same path I am walking, then BOOM! Some dude shoved me out of HIS path and crushed the dream-like state I was basking in …wait… that was Evan Seinfeld; AWESOME! The former Biohazard front man was in a hurry to get some grub and get on his Harley Davidson to get him back to the parking lot to rock out with his new band Attika 7. Biohazard fans will love this new band that features real bikers like Rusty Coones (Quinn from Sons of Anarchy). Ok so at this point I needed to stop dreaming of rock stars and pay attention to my surroundings because I just may be blocking one of my favorite stars path to food. Ha. This day was already awesome. One of the many security guards covered in a plastic poncho directed me to the press area which was directly behind the main stage. On the other side of the press tent was the stage crew’s catering which smelled amazing and reminded me of my rations for the day. A pack of beef jerky and a dietary mix of seeds and nuts would

Butcher Babies Gumby came to the front and yelled “HOME!!!” The Crowd went nuts. And they gave us the show they were waiting to give us! I hooked up with Don Slater after the set. Don is, in my opinion, the Cliff Burton of modern metal employing his fingers to keep the rhythm along with complex bass lines around two amazing The first heavy hitter I sat with was Janne Wirman, the Finnish keyboardist of Children of Bodom. Whoa, here I am with some of the fastest fingers guitarists while standing out amazingly! “I’m playing a venue that I watched Iron Maiden and performing in the same lot as Symphony X!” I remembered that same in keyboards and he was telling me how boring the time between gigs can be in show and pointed out to him that the Battlecross crowd was 5 times the size of the U.S. because the venues are “In the middle of nowhere”. Janne must be used that show. He grinned. All of the bands on this tour have such energy onstage and I to the European cities all close together. I then ran into Frankie Palmeri, singer asked Don what he does before performing to set the mood; “ Ya know, I do a few of Emmure. Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) – Happy birthday Leo! This birth year you’re able to balance wants with needs. Make a list of your goals and wishes. Then meditate with the list. See if any seem to loose their importance or allure. Make definite steps for the ones that remain, and take action to manifest them – even if it is just visualizing your life with that fulfillment. Rob Zombie brought the house down as usual in more ways than any of us expected with multiple screens of horror animations and monster themed outfits opening with the new track “Teenage Nosferatu Pussy” then playing a montage of all our favorites including a tribute to the Funk boys from Flint with “We’re an American band”. They closed the set with Dragula and left the stage dressed as the Metal Knights Templar they fight to be keeping the grail of a good time in their grasps.

Evan Seinfeld put it best to me before the show. “There are two types of music. Music that makes you feel something, and then there’s everything else.” We all felt something that day; a brotherhood of Metal Madness!
